lant spring flowering bulbs such as daffodils, crocus, muscari and scilla but not tulips.

Continue with dead heading and weeding so that you extend the flowering season and keep soil nutrients and moisture for your plants and not the weeds.

If you have any large clumps of perennials or alpines then now is a good time to split and divide. Most plants can be separated into many smaller pieces which can all be replanted or given away. Discard the very old centre portion as this will not make a good new plant.

Plant out new spring bedding such as wallflowers, primula and bellis.

Bring inside any tender perennials such as fuchsia or geraniums before the first frosts.

If you have somewhere frost free they can be kept over winter or if not then take cuttings.

After the first frost lift cannas and dahlias or if you live in a sheltered spot you can try to leave them in the ground but cover them with straw or bracken.

As the breeding season for birds is not quite over it is still not safe to put out peanuts and other large bird food but continue with small bird food.

If you have the room put a pile of twigs or logs in a quiet corner of the garden as these will become home to lots of wildlife. To make it an attractive area plant around the logs with primroses, ferns etc.

Do not cut back any plants with seed heads, such as sunflowers, as they provide a useful source of food for birds.

Make or buy a hedgehog hibernation box and leave it under a pile of dead leaves at the back of garden where it will be undisturbed. If making it yourself add a tunnel to the entrance hole to stop predators from entering the nest.

THE NEW VITARA - SUZUKI ARE FIGHTING BACK!

S

uzuki originally created the first car in the crossover category some twenty years ago but rival technology quickly overtook them and they have since had to take something of a back seat against the likes of Qashqai, Citroen Cactus and Juke.

They have high hopes for the new version, however, aiming to bury the somewhat dated image of its predecessors with a striking upgrade that offers distinctive looks, decent economy and a simplistic choice with just one diesel and one petrol engine available – both in a 1.6 format.

The petrol version is considerably cheaper than the diesel (around an extra £1500) but with diesel fuel once more returned to a reasonable cost level economy can be achieved with either version, especially with the 17mpg advantage of diesel over petrol forecast by Suzuki.

On the move, the engine is reasonably quiet - even the diesel version - and with steering impressively responsive and the

car demonstrating little in the way of body roll it’s good to drive. It’s not uncomfortable during longer drives either.

The five-speed manual gearbox is smooth and precise, so it’s no chore to change gear and keep the engine in the higher rev

ranges where it responds best. The petrol version is obviously smoother but the diesel handles steep hills really well and has good acceleration.

Some models are available with four-wheel drive while an automatic gearbox is also an

LOCAL ANSWER option. A host of personalisation choices are also available, ranging from interior trim panel colours to exterior cosmetic upgrade packs.

Internally, Suzuki have themselves made economies with the use of fairly standard materials, but it’s nevertheless well built and all models are generously equipped.

The company has a reputation for making durable and practical interiors and the Vitara doesn’t disappoint. The cabin is solid and sensibly laid out with piano-black trims and a neat analogue clock adding a touch of class. On the down side the hard plastics aren’t especially appealing to look at or to touch.

As you’d expect from Suzuki, you get a lot for your money. The entry-level petrol SZ4 model costs £13,999 but comes with a DAB radio, Bluetooth, cruise control and climate control. The flagship SZ5 trim (£17,999), brings a touch screen sat-nav and media system, adaptive cruise control and LED headlights, as well as interior upgrades that include suede-covered seats. It also includes LED headlamps, Radar Brake Support auto braking and a panoramic sunroof.

Up front, you’ll find plenty of room and the steering column adjusts for both rise and reach, making it easy to find a comfortable driving position. The back seats are similarly cosseting and have loads of legroom even behind a tall driver, but - particularly with the panoramic sunroof - headroom is a problem for taller people.

The 375-litre boot should be well sufficient for most normal sized families and is bigger than either the Citroën C4 Cactus or Nissan Juke. A wide-opening tailgate and a low boot lip make for easy access, while the rear seats split and fold, improving the available space if necessary. One small criticism is that they don’t lie totally flat.

Sadly, the car adheres to the modern - and very irritating - trend of not including a spare wheel. Instead you’ll find a tyre repair kit that contradicts the excellent attention to detail shown elsewhere.

Overall, though, the car has many qualities in a very reasonable price bracket and Suzuki enthusiasts will love it, despite many of them proclaiming their existing models to be both reliable and rewarding.

Like all car purchases it’s all a matter of choice but if economy and reliability are preferred to outlandish style and ultra quick performance it could well be the car for you.

AVL thinks big with move into new premises

V

ehicle leasing company AVL has moved into new premises to support its growth.

Five years ago, AVL (Advanced Vehicle Leasing), the largest independent supplier of contract hire, lease cars and commercial vehicles between Edinburgh and Leeds, was supplying vehicles at a rate of 60 a month. This year it expects to supply 1,500, or 125 a month.

As part of an estimated £500,000 long-term investment, it has moved into a 9,000sq ft suite of offices within Middlesbrough’s Riverside Park industrial district – nearly five times the size of its former home at Urlay Nook, near Yarm.

AVL, which had an 18-strong sales team prior to the move, including agents in London, Newcastle, Scotland, Grimsby, Cambridge and Stratford upon Avon, has quickly strengthened with two appointments in Middlesbrough, with plans to recruit a further four around the UK. “We are not a boom or bust type of business, but have grown steadily and organically over a number of years to the point where we were bursting at the seams at Urlay Nook,” says founder and managing director Stuart Beagrie.

“Whilst we supply vehicles throughout the UK, about 70% of our customers are within a 60mile radius of here, so the move to Riverside Park positions us at the heart of our patch and, within sight of both the A19 and A66 arterial routes, with the added benefit of superb road access.”

Established in 1997 in Ripon, AVL deals in all aspects of vehicle provision, PCP, hire purchase, contract hire, contract purchase, personal car leasing and lease purchase. It also sells used and ex lease vehicles through a sister company, AVL Trade Sales.

Says Stuart Beagrie “We have what some might call old-fashioned beliefs in the importance of customer care. Regardless of whether the

car being supplied is a £5,000 hatchback or a £90,000 luxury model, customers can expect the same standard of service, with all vehicles delivered with the same level of care by trailer.”

Unusually, the move to Easter Park, on the western edge of Riverside Park, has created a miniature enterprise zone at AVL’s new Riverside Park home, with the company joined by its accountants – A Star Accountancy – and a small IT company who are working to improve all aspects of AVLs IT strategy.

Stuart Beagrie adds: “We believe business is a two-way street and a lot of companies we supply vehicles to also end up providing services to us. It therefore made great sense for A Star and the IT company, which is helping us to develop our website and IT infrastructure, to also be based within our premises and, hopefully, grow alongside us.”

On Friday 15th May the new offices were officially opened by Middlesbrough MP Andy McDonald with over 250 customers and suppliers joining Stuart and his staff to celebrate the event.

IF IT AIN’T BROKE, DON’T FIX IT!

I

’m about to start writing this piece both baffled and livid at the result of the home game against Bristol City.

Following probably the best first half of football ‘Boro have produced for many a year against Bolton and then what most would have accepted as a good result beforehand and a disappointment afterwards with Derby’s last minute equaliser we expected an unchanged side and a home victory.

When I saw the team selection I found it hard to fathom. On-fire strikers are great to have and should be the first name on the team sheet but Kike - the man who Karanka swore beforehand he was going to stick with because ‘he trusted him’ - was mysteriously relegated to the bench.

Fabbrini has been an absolute revelation and over 22,000 fans arrived expecting another exciting performance.

Ben Gibson had returned to the team after injury to play a mammoth part in the Derby draw and Albert Adomah has been one of the major components of an attacking

midfield combination that tore Bolton apart last Saturday.

So where the hell were they? This was very much like a little kid in a toy shop who - despite playing with a super toy and enjoying it - was swayed by the huge choice in front of him and kept changing for something he wasn’t sure he would enjoy.

It should be up to Stuani and Nugent to force their way into the team if Kike suddenly stops scoring, so to make those four changes to a side that has performed so well is completely baffling. That we had a league cup game on the following Tuesday night in which he could have confidently experimented makes the whole team selection even more puzzling.

I’m a firm fan of Aitor Karanka and even though he did tend to change things around in similar fashion last season there has to be a question mark about the decision making for this particular game.

It was pretty inevitable that the Bristol game would attract a big crowd so why

risk change when the club is desperate to attract and hold on to both new and returning supporters after the desperation of the Southgate, Mowbray and Strachan eras?

There’s a wonderful expression that’s used in every aspect of life with which we must all agree. ’If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.’ And don’t anybody give me the increasingly pathetic excuse that players are tired.

They’ve all just had a couple of months holiday and have played four games so far.

God knows what footballers would be like if they had to get up at seven every morning and work an eight or nine hour shift every day.

My euphoria after Bolton and the increased confidence after a very good show against Derby has very, very quickly evaporated and it’s going to take some good results to get that feeling back. Tinkering around with a well performing team is never going to be the way to do it!

How do my parents expect me to be independent, self reliant and stand on my own two feet with the tiny allowance they give me?
