April Gardening Tips

D

eadhead Delphiniums and Lupins once they finish flowering to promote a further flush later.

Cut back hardy geraniums, heucheras and oriental poppies hard back. This will give some fresh foliage and maybe more flowers.

Put houseplants out in the garden for their ‘summer holiday’. Remember to take them back in during September before any frosts.

Once there has been a dry spell, give a coat of colour/preservative to fences, sheds and decking.

Rhododendrons, lilacs and hydrangeas can be dead headed but be careful not to cut too far back, merely taking just the blooms.

Hoe off any annual weeds but perennial weeds should be dug out making sure you take out all the root.

Keep hostas and other tender plants safe from slugs and snails. You can get a slug killer that is not harmful to wildlife or you can use beer traps, crushed egg shells or used coffee grounds.

Keep hanging baskets, containers and any newly planted shrubs or perennials well watered.

Take time out not only to walk round the garden hopefully every day to keep an eye on everything but most importantly SIT and ENJOY!

Lawns Mow the lawn more often now, usually at least once a week and reduce the cutting height if the weather is not too hot.

If you have any movable features on the lawn, such as tables, chairs, children’s toys or animals like rabbits in runs, make sure they are moved on a regular basis so the grass underneath can green up again.

If you have not already weeded and fed the lawn it is still not too late to apply a combined weed and feed.

A new lawn should be watered in dry spells to stop the turf from shrinking and failing to knit together and also water seed sown lawns to encourage growth.

If you have a lot of grass clippings put them on the compost heap in stages so that the compost does not go slimy.

Fruit and Vegetables Place straw or black polythene under strawberries to protect from rain splashes and slugs.

Place netting supported by raised canes to protect fruit from birds if you don’t yet have a fruit cage.

After the June drop of apple trees, if the apples still look too crowded thin them out to give better sized fruits that will ripen all the way round.

LOCAL ANSWER Keep picking rhubarb so that it does not have a chance to go to seed.

Train in the new canes of raspberries and blackberries by tying them in to say the left whilst the older canes are pulled to the right.

Early potatoes should be ready to dig now and maincrop ones will need earthing up.

Sow more lettuce, radish and beetroot in succession through the month.

Train tomato plants as they grow and pinch out the side shoots from cordon grown ones.

Run string attached at each end to posts to support broad beans as they grow and pinch out the growing tips to discourage black fly.

Keep all vegetable growing areas free from weeds.

Wildlife Roses that produce hips should not be hard pruned so that the hips may be left for the birds to enjoy as well as being decorative.

Leave a part of the garden untended, behind the shed is a good place, where wildlife can be safe. Any nettles can be cut back to provide fresh growth. Put the cuttings on the compost heap.

Make sure you have plenty of marginal planting around a wildlife pond as the tadpoles will be getting their legs and seeking shelter amongst plants at the side of the pond.

Put up a bat nesting box in a sunny position to encourage bats who will eat midges etc.

THE NEW SKODA FABIA - A GREAT LITTLE CAR!

I

t’s taken a long time for Skoda to shake off all those horrible innuendos about skips and dustbins on wheels but the introduction of a great range of cars since the Czech manufacturer became a wholly owned subsidiary of VW in 2000 has rightly elevated the brand to new levels.

Worldwide sales in 2014 were 1.04million an annual increase of 12.7%.

The latest release is the completely upgraded Fabia and in keeping with the rest of the range it’s an absolute little beauty.

Totally revamped, this model is great to drive and offers a load of extras that compare more than favourably with some of its more expensive rivals in the small car market. And while it is both bigger and more robust than previous Fabia models, modern techniques and innovative use of materials means it’s actually 65kg lighter.

Internally, it has a lot to offer, and thanks to a longer wheelbase than the previous model the Fabia is one of the few cars in

this class which can seat four six-footers in comfort. The 330-litre boot is more generous than rivals like the Fiesta and Vauxhall Corsa and there are plenty of little storage cupboards scattered about the cabin. It’s all beautifully built as well, with the internal trim excellent quality.

Driving-wise we found it really responsive with excellent body control well matched by fluid steering. Wind noise was also minimal. The first surprise was the push button start, an innovation that was once the preserve of more exclusive cars but has

LOCAL ANSWER now begun to filter down to many of the more basic models.

Also available as standard in the range are a number of sought after additions though how many of them are included will depend on the particular model. Alloy wheels, DAB radio, multi function steering wheel with radio and telephone controls, climate control air conditioning, electric front windows, front fog lights, electrically adjustable and heated door mirrors, rear parking sensors and central locking are typical examples.

Even the most basic models, however, come equipped with Bluetooth connectivity, digital radio, electric front windows and a tyre pressure monitor.

Despite all these extras you should only be paying between £10,600 and £17,240 considerably less than Fabia’s main rival the VW Polo and more than matching the Ford Fiesta.

Economically, the company is forecasting between 58 and 78mpg, depending of course on both the car and the driver, though while emissions are low across the range they are still a little over the free road tax figure at 107g/km. At most, however, you’ll only pay £20 for annual road tax.

Three trim levels are available - S,SE and SE L with the latter the one to boast all of the previously mentioned ‘extras.’

scoring five stars when it was tested by Euro NCAP - one of the few cars in this sector to receive more than four stars in what is now a tough test for small cars.

Safety equipment levels are good, with six airbags fitted as standard, ‘Isofix’ child seat fittings in the rear, and a tyre pressure warning systems that alert drivers if the tyres are under-inflated or punctured. SE models add ‘Front Assist,’ warning drivers if the car detects a possible collision and absence of input from those behind the wheel, before automatically braking.

While it is hard to describe the new Fabia as particularly exciting, it is nevertheless a solid, very well built car that offers a combination of solidity, refinement and value that will be difficult to find elsewhere.

It’s well worth a look!

BIG STEPS FORWARD WHATEVER THE RESULT!

A

t the moment of writing I’m preparing for my trip to Wembley with a mixture of excitement and trepidation and by the time this is published we will all know which of them was justified.

It’s difficult to describe how important the game is for the team that prevails on the day but whatever the result we have to look back on the last ten months as an enormous breakthrough for ‘Boro.

Since Aitor Karanka’s arrival the club has only gone in one direction and although we didn’t make automatic promotion there isn’t a realistic ‘Boro fan around that could have possible forecast our current position at the start of the season.

That it’s been achieved with a bunch of young players who - with the exception of Patrick Bamford - have arrived from comparatively unfashionable clubs and were hitherto almost unknown is a remarkable tribute to the management skills of the very likeable Spaniard.

That said, there is also a wonderfully uplifting atmosphere running throughout the whole club and the unbelievable

success that has emanated from the much heralded academy under the guidance of the also very likeable David Parnaby is both amazing and fantastic.

And from that we could possibly take some real confidence because the last time ‘Boro succeeded in a major final - who could forget that wonderful day in Cardiff? - the FA Youth Cup was also lifted by the club in the same season.

This year, both the under 18s and the under 21s have won their respective divisions to show not only the real strength that is running throughout the club but also the tremendous spirit that exists among the entire group of players.

‘Boro’s under 18s will compete in next season’s Under 19s Champion’s League after they were crowned National Champions above the likes of Chelsea, Manchester United, Manchester City and Everton.

An unbelievable result and one that because of ‘Boro’s previous success in bringing young players into the first team - augers really well for the development of the club bearing in mind the financial

restrictions that now exist.

The under 21s finished their season as champions of the Premier League Under 21s second division and are now promoted to their own version of the promised land.

So, if we’re now in the Premiership let’s look forward to an exciting season of continued development. If not, then we have to look to going one better next time around.

Either way, it’s pretty certain that the very thorough Aitor Karanka will have plans in hand to strengthen accordingly, though if Ben Gibson and Adam Reach’s performances this season are anything to go by he may have potential strength in depth in the club already.

Recipe

CORNFLAKE JAM TART INGREDIENTS Pastry: 175g plain flour 85g butter (cold and cubed) 1 tbsp caster sugar 2 medium egg yolks 2 tbsp water (room temperature) Filling: 150g raspberry jam 75g butter 25g golden caster sugar 2 tbsp golden syrup 125g cornflakes

METHOD Start with the pastry – place the flour and butter in a bowl, and use your (clean) fingers to rub together until the mixture resemble bread crumbs.

Mix in the sugar with a spoon. Add 1 egg yolk and a tablespoon of water, and mix it in using a knife in a chopping motion. Add

the other yolk and tablespoon of water and mix it in with a knife again. Once it starts to come together, use your hands to bring the dough into a ball.

Wrap in cling-film and place in the fridge for an hour. Preheat the oven to 200c and generously grease a tart tin (A removable base is recommended, as you will see in a minute).

Take the dough from the fridge and place in the middle of the tart base. Roll outwards with a floured rolling-pin so that it is large enough to line your tart tin (but not too thick).

Try not to over work the pastry too much as it will affect the bake. Once it is rolled out, fold the edges inwards, and carefully place the base into the outer part of the tin (see below).

Unfold the edges and gently push into the sides of the tin. Leave any excess pastry on for now.

Line the pastry case with some greaseproof paper, fill with baking beans (or rice if you do not have any) and bake for 10 minutes.

greaseproof paper and baking beans.

Gently ‘scrape’ off the excess edge with a sharp knife, and prick the base of the tart all over with a fork.

Place back in the oven and cook for 12 – 15 minutes, or until it is a nice pale brown colour and no longer moist.

Lower the oven to 180c and start on the filling. Heat the jam lightly in a saucepan until it is runny, and spread over the base of the tart.

Melt the butter, golden syrup and sugar in a saucepan over a medium heat; once melted, remove from the heat and stir in the cornflakes.

Spread evenly over the jam, then place in the oven for 10 – 15 minutes, or until the cornflakes turn golden brown.

Remove from the oven and allow to cool for about 20 minutes before tucking in, as this will allow the cornflake topping to firm up slightly.

This is great served hot with custard, cold with cream, or completely on its own. Enjoy!
