April Gardening Tips

A

fter a wet spell, mulch around camellias, rhododendrons and azaleas to help conserve moisture to ensure good flowering next year.

Tie in new shoots on clematis, jasmine and climbing and rambling roses. Rose shoots should be kept as level as possible to promote growth of side shoots.

Sow sweet pea seeds outside or plant out those you have grown over winter. Put the climbing structure, either a wigwam or frame with netting, in place. Put two seeds or plants to each cane.

If you have a light soil you can start making sowings of hardy annuals. Sow into straight seed drills as this makes it easier to take out any weeds that will grow. Once the flowers are in bloom you will not be able to see the rows.

Put in supports for perennials to grow through before they become too large. Use frames sold for this purpose and once the plants mature they will be hidden by the foliage.

The more tender plants that had their stems left on to protect the crowns such as fuchsias and penstemons can now be pruned taking care not to cut out any new growth.

Keep dead heading daffodils and tulips

taking off only the flower and seed head.

Buy seedlings and plug plants ready to grow on for your hanging baskets and containers.

On warm days open the vents and doors of your greenhouse and damp down the floor.

Start to feed fish in the ornamental pond.

Lawns This is the best month to apply weed killer or moss killer.

Apply a spring fertilizer to help green up your lawn after the winter.

Mow the grass as necessary but don’t put the clippings on the compost after applying weed killer.

If you used moss killer after a couple of weeks rake out the dead moss and any other debris on the lawn.

Fruit and Vegetables The blossom of peach, nectarine and apricot trees should be protected from frost with a cover of fleece. Remove it in the daytime to allow insects to pollinate.

Fans, cordons and espalier fruit trees should now be pruned.

Plum and cherry trees can be pruned now the threat of getting silver leaf disease has gone.

Wildlife Make your wildlife pond more friendly by adding native planting such as marsh marigold as close to the edge as possible and making one end have a very shallow entry into the water so any creatures can climb in and out.

Keep feeding the birds but only with small sized food so the mother does not take large pieces back to the fledglings.

Hedgehogs will be coming out of hibernation so extra food, other slugs, may be needed by them as all their fat reserves will have been used up over the winter.

If you want to attract butterflies put in some butterfly attracting plants such as buddleia, honesty or even nettles.

‘Off their rockers ‘ is a reality show that features a bunch of seventy and eighty year olds being secretly filmed approaching young people in the street with really weird requests.

The response from the young people is nothing short of hilarious, but to their credit - and to the credit of the younger generation as a whole - they show true empathy with this ancient generation who - thanks to the format of the programme have suddenly forced themselves upon them.

It’s pretty difficult to describe the goings on without relating endless examples of the scenarios the old people create but believe us, it is really, really worth watching.

I

t’s probably an indication of how well the first two games went that even though before the start of the Ipswich, Derby and Bournemouth treble most ‘Boro fans would have been satisfied with five points out of the nine we are now disappointed to have ‘only’ got six.

The despondency we all felt after the Bournemouth game showed what a wonderful week it could have been had it not unfortunately ended rather sadly.

If ever an international break could be welcomed then after both the performance and the result against Bournemouth this is surely the time.

A run of fixtures over the last four weeks that would make the Premiership mercenaries quiver with fear has probably left the team feeling a bit lethargic and the Bournemouth game was probably just one too many.

A fortnight’s break will do wonders for everybody, however, and hopefully means that either Woody or Ayala will be available to partner Ben Gibson. That would enable Kalas to return to his best position at right back.

So, with just seven games to go - starting with the frenetic Easter programme - how confident are we that we can reach and maintain a top two position? That prompts the guessing game so let’s take a look at

the remaining fixtures....

While it often happens that someone emerges from the pack, I think realistically we now only have to look at two from Bournemouth, Watford, Norwich and ourselves to make the automatic spots. So who have we all got?

Bournemouth: Birmingham, Sheffield Wednesday & Bolton (home). Ipswich, Brighton, Reading and Charlton (away).

Watford: ‘Boro, Birmingham & Sheffield Wednesday (home). Derby, Millwall, Nottingham Forest and Brighton (away).

‘Boro: Wigan, Rotherham, Wolves & Brighton (home). Watford, Norwich and Fulham (away).

Norwich: Sheffield Wednesday, ‘Boro & Fulham (home). Brighton, Bolton, Leeds and Rotherham (away).

The first thing to mention is that ‘Boro are the only ones to have 4 home games and 3 away. The rest have only 3 at home and 4 away. That augers well when you consider our recent home record. Sadly, two of the away games are against Watford and Norwich so we’d have to be looking for at least a draw in those two to maintain our chances.

Bournemouth, on the other hand, do not have a single fixture against any of the top six clubs so their chances must be completely in their own hands. I think they’ll make it.

LOCAL ANSWER Looking at Norwich’s recent run their only tricky fixtures are against ‘Boro at home and Leeds away (We’ll all be supporting Leeds that day, I’m sure). Their recent run has been frightening so they must have an outstanding chance. Watford have also been playing really well and their only tricky fixtures are against ‘Boro, Derby and Nottingham Forest so they also have a great chance of staking a claim.

Having read all that you must realise I simply haven’t a clue and neither has anyone else. If there’s one certainty in this division this season it’s that on their day anyone can beat anyone. So we’ll all just have to bite our nails and pray that results go for us. Hopefully, by the time I write the next column we’ll know that the promised land has been reached. The prayer mat is out!

Recipe

STEAK & SPRING ONION PIE Ingredients for Shortcrust Pastry half, place one half back in fridge for 235 g plain sifted flour 53 g unsalted butter 53 g margarine Pinch of salt Enough water to make a fairly easy to roll out dough 40 grams of uncooked rice or 40 grams of dried peas Method: Preheat oven to 200c, next place your flour and fats into a bowl and add a pinch of salt, mix together until you have a sandy like consistency. Next add just enough water to achieve a firm to touch dough.

Now cover with cling film, and leave in your fridge for about 15 to 20 minutes, while waiting for this, prepare the filling below.

Next take your dough out and cut in

the moment, grease a 24 cm round or square by 2 cm deep oven proof dish, roll out your dough to fit the bottom and sides, cut off any excess.

Next cover the pastry with either the rice or dried peas to prevent the pastry rising when baking blind.

Put into oven and bake until pastry is just half cooked, then take out and leave to one side.

Ingredients for Filling 390 grams diced stewing steak 100 grams of sliced mushrooms Salt and pepper to taste 2 bunches of chopped spring onions 5 grams of frozen defrosted peas 1 beef stock cube 3 tbs of vegetable oil 1 level tsp of cornflour in a little water 100 ml water

Solution

Method: Heat the vegetable oil on a very low heat in a frying pan, add the onions, and cook for about 2 minutes, next add the steak to the pan, and cook very slowly until about half cooked.

Now add the mushrooms, peas, salt and pepper to taste and mix together, make up the beef stock in 100 ml of hot water, now add the cornflour to the oil in the frying pan and mix well, next add the stock you just made and stir in well.

Take off heat and leave to one side for the moment.

Now get your pie base, and spoon the meat mixture into it, take the other half of the dough out of fridge, roll out and cover the top of the pie, cut off any excess pastry, and using your fingers or a fork crimp the sides down like the picture shows.

Bake for around 35 to 40 minutes.

Serves 6 people.
