lear the last of the winter bedding from containers and borders and, if you have not grown your own, buy new summer bedding for planting out once all fear of frost has past.

Once the fear of frosts has passed you can put out your hanging baskets and patio tubs full of summer bedding plants.

Continue to dead head any remaining daffodils and tulips but do not take off the foliage until it is brown and then feed with a liquid fertilizer.

Shade the greenhouse and damp down the floors on hot days after opening vents and doors. Prune spring flowering shrubs and clematis Montana.

Tie in new shoots of honeysuckle and clematis or if you have bare walls or fences now is a good time to plant new climbers.

When the danger of frost has passed plant out cannas and dahlias. Hoe the borders on a regular basis to prevent weeds from getting a hold.

Mow on a regularly basis, lowering the height of cut gradually but raise it again during any prolonged dry spells.

If you haven’t already fed your lawn this spring, give it a feed of a high nitrogen lawn fertilizer to keep it looking green.

Fruit and Vegetables Put nets over any fruits that are about to ripen to stop the birds eating them.

Remove any strawberry runners so the plants put all their energy into producing fruit.

If a late frost is forecast cover stone fruits with a fleece at night but remove in the morning so that pollinating insects have free access.

the fruit development stage. Plants can be in a rain shadow when up against a tall structure and will need extra watering.

To keep the codling moth from your apple trees hang pheromone traps amongst the trees. Continue with successional sowings of salad crops.

Keep feeding the birds but make sure there are no large pieces that the mothers could take back to the chicks and choke them.

If you would like to attract the summer visiting birds such as swifts and housemartins you can buy special nesting boxes to put up in the garden. Swallows will make their own nests.

Humour HOW DISORDER IN THE AMERICAN COURTS CAN BE GENUINELY FUNNY!

A

s a young reporter I used to have to sit in a variety of magistrate’s courts for days on end waiting for something interesting to appear. That it rarely did probably accounted for my total disillusionment with the profession but having discovered the following word for word accounts of things that have genuinely taken place in American Court Rooms I think my time would have been much better spent in the States. These are from a book called ‘Disorder in the American Courts,’ and are statements people actually made in court, word for word. How the American court reporters remained calm while these exchanges were taking place is beyond me. I hope you appreciate them as much as I did!

ATTORNEY: What was the first thing your husband said to you that morning?

WITNESS: He said, ‘Where am I, Cathy?’

ATTORNEY: And why did that upset you?

WITNESS: My name is Susan!

ATTORNEY AT A CAR ACCIDENT HEARING: What gear were you in at the moment of the impact?

I

f ever a moment defined the problems ‘Boro have faced throughout this most disappointing season it was when midfielder Marten De Roon was injured against Bournemouth and replaced by full back Fabio in a match we simply had to win.

It was bad enough that we started the game with three centre halves and only one striker but being one nil down after just two minutes, being a man down after twenty and then rearranging the team formation into three centre halves, three fullbacks, two defensive midfielders and just one up front when we needed at least three goals suggested the game had already been handed to Bournemouth.

As nice a man as he is, it is difficult to imagine that Steve Agnew could possibly be entrusted with the task of getting us back up next season from what we have already found is the most difficult league in football.

With a record of just 2 points from the possible 24 in which he has been at the helm it’s difficult to see how he could make improvements. After all, he’s been coaching the team all season so he also has to take some of the blame for what Page 36

went on before he took over.

There has been an awful lot said about Aitor Karanka’s lack of adventure in his preferred formation but the problems that have faced ‘Boro this season have gone much deeper.

His purchases left a lot to be desired with the most baffling – whether he was behind it or not – the six million spent on Patrick Bamford. Equally as bad was the money paid for the hugely underperforming Viktor Fischer, the massive amount spent on De Roon - who simply hasn’t been up to it - and the sums given for Barragan, Bernado and Gestede – none of whom were holding down a first team place at the time.

Add to that the poor performances of Gaston Ramirez in the last three months and It’s quite easy to see why we haven’t been able to compete in the Premier League.

The one shining light in a dreadful season has been the backing of the fans.

Supporting the club through poor, bad and worse, they have never given up, even when Karanka berated them against West Ham for asking for a bit more attacking play. Their performance at least, this May 2017 | The Local Answer Magazine

season, deserved an awful lot more than they got!

So where on earth do we go from here?

Steve Gibson has yet another big task to find a manager who can take us on again.

The way this season has played out since December would suggest that unless someone comes in with fresh ideas, an attacking mindset and both knowledge and experience of the Championship the idea that as a team that has just been demoted we’ll be fighting at the top end of the league next season is almost laughable.

Perhaps the most worrying thing is the perception that Middlesbrough is a little town in the freezing cold North East that offers none of the glamour of the bigger cities, so would only really attract people who haven’t made it anywhere else.

So, over to you, Mr Gibson. We wait with baited breath....
