In The Garden

In the flower garden Prune your Wisteria now, cutting back summer side-shoots to 2 or 3 buds.

Towards the end of the month prune summer-flowering Clematis before active growth Cut back shrubs such as Cornus and Salix cultivars (grown for their colourful winter stems) down to their bases.

Cut back the old foliage from ornamental grasses before growth begins - clip them to within a few centimetres of the ground. Prune overwintered fuchsias back to one or two buds on each shoot.

Prune Winter Flowering Jasmine (Jasminum nudiflorum) after flowering to encourage new growth for next year’s blooms. Cut back the previous years growth to 5cm from the old wood.

Prune winter flowering shrubs such as Mahonia and Viburnum x bodnantense after their colourful display has finished.

Trim winter-flowering heathers as the flowers disappear, to prevent the plants becoming leggy.

Remove any faded flowers from your winter pansies to stop them setting seed.

This will encourage a flush of new flowers when the weather warms up. Lift and divide snowdrops still ‘in the green’ if you want to move them or create more plants. If you need to move deciduous trees or shrubs, now is the time to do it provided the soil is not frozen or waterlogged. Plant Lilies and Allium bulbs. Plant bare root roses in a sunny position for spectacular summer colour.

Plant fragrant winter flowering shrubs to add interest to borders. Try Daphne, Viburnum x bodnantense, Witch Hazel (Hamamelis x intermedia) and Wintersweet (Chimonanthus praecox).

Hardwood cuttings taken last year may need planting or potting on now.

Pot on rooted cuttings of tender perennial plants taken last summer.

Look out for Hellebore leaf spot (rounded brown spots on the leaves) and remove any leaves that are affected.

hile ‘Boro’s last two league performances have left a fair bit to be desired there is little doubt that if not for a couple of gilt edged chances being missed things could have been so much different.

The Kike opportunity from a fantastic Ayala cross should certainly have hit the back of the net against Bristol City, while the excellent training ground free kick from Grant Leadbitter that crashed against the woodwork would have given us what at the time would have been a deserved lead.

That could - and should - have been followed up by a header from Nsue that had it been headed downwards would have been a certain goal. Instead, of course, it flew over the bar.

These are the small percentages that make the difference between us being miles ahead of the chasing pack or - as is the case - two points behind Hull but with a game in hand.

I’m sure that the frustrations of the two matches still irritate all of us but I’m also pretty certain that given the chance of being in this position at the start of the Page 36

season we would have been delighted.

It’s a tough league and we’ve done superbly well to be where we are.

The big challenge now is to brush the disappointment aside and start another winning run that would almost certainly see us shake off the chasing pack.

At the time of writing we now have two weeks to re-group, sort out proposed new arrivals and get back to winning ways for the Blackburn game on February 6th.

It’s difficult with both their goal scoring records to imagine either Ross McCormack or Jordan Rhodes missing the Kike chance and from all the talk emanating from the Riverside it is the former who is top of Karanka’s list.

Ironic, really, because we had the chance to sign him while he was at Leeds but they were holding out for a bit more and we refused to pay it. I say ironic because the amount they wanted was still considerably less than we will now have to find for a player who continues to show the ultimate in reliability in front of goal but is now two or three years older.

Whatever he costs, however, would pale into insignificance if promotion is achieved and the Sky money is forthcoming. That’s why being in the position we are in is so important. It means we can attract players who desire premiership football because at this moment in time I feel certain any player with any kind of ambition would see us as a better proposition than the likes of Sunderland, Newcastle, Aston Villa and Norwich who’s Premiership tenure is in real doubt.

By the time you read this we’ll hopefully have a proven goal scorer up front whoever it is - and despite the two setbacks mentioned above would almost guarantee a successful run-in. We can only wait and see, but I still have a sneaky feeling we’ll all need to keep our fingers crossed until the final game in May. Let’s hope it isn’t in the play-offs!
