A Smoke-Free Alternative from Mirage

S

moking is highly addictive, bad for your health and a big problem in the North.

Highly addictive nicotine and habit forming behaviour make it hard for many smokers to quit or even to reduce the number of cigarettes they smoke.

But with more than 4,000 chemical compounds present in every cigarette including arsenic, formaldehyde, cyanide and carbon monoxide, the health risk they run with every puff is deadly.

According to the National Office of Statistics (NOS) more than 100,000 smokers in the UK die from smoking related causes, and about half of all regular cigarette smokers will eventually go on to be killed by their addiction. They account for more than one-quarter of all cancer deaths and more than a third of all respiratory deaths.

More worrying still is the number of people who smoke 40 or more a day and buy cheap imported tobacco to feed their addiction. What they do not realise is that many packets of these cut price fags contain far more harmful substances than ‘real’ tobacco products.

Kicking the habit is the only way to avoid nasty smoking-related illnesses and the financial burden the addiction brings.

For those who simply cannot quit and still crave a smoking experience, e-cigarettes now offer an alternative to smoking.

Companies such as Mirage Cigarettes produce high quality e-cigarettes and liquids. They offer a smoke-free alternative to traditional tobacco-filled cigarettes and are free from tar, but contain the right level of nicotine to satisfy smokers’ cravings.

However, despite 50% of the 10 million smokers in the UK having tried e-cigarettes, only 20% of them have continued to use them.

Mirage was established in 2008 and was one of the first e-cigarette companies to establish itself in the UK. It has over 35 outlets across the country with a large number of those located here in the North, including in Redcar, Guisborough and Middlesbrough.

ECITA ensures standards of excellence are adhered to by all its members, helping them to operate an ethically and legally compliant business. He added: “Our customers have reported excellent outcomes. One lady has even saved enough to go on holiday and visit her son in Thailand - something she could never do before.”

Mirage e-cigarettes come in various forms: disposable non-rechargeable ‘cig-a-like’ products, rechargeable ‘cig-a-like’ products that require a pre-filled cartridge, and rechargeable products that have a tank or reservoir which is filled with liquid nicotine.

The company does not sell e-cigarettes to anyone under the age of 18 or who are non-smokers.

John says that the aim is to get people away from traditional cigarettes. Smokers

will usually start with a liquid that tastes similar to the brand of tobacco cigarettes that they would usually smoke and contains a level of nicotine that will satisfy their requirements.

The idea is that once they are comfortable with the product, they will return every three to four weeks for a consultation, making the switch to fruit or other flavour ‘e-juices’ and lowering their nicotine intake.

Changing the flavour of the e-liquid takes away the association smokers have with their habit and the flavour of the tobacco, making it easier to quit altogether.

“A quality e-cigarette is cheaper than fake fags,” says John, “whilst providing the smoking experience and nicotine hit they need.” He concluded: “We have to get people off the fags. There are no two ways about it.”

ut back lupins and delphiniums that have finished flowering to encourage a second flush later in the season.

Continue to deadhead the flower border on a regular basis as this will also encourage more flowers later on.

Don’t forget to feed all the flower borders and containers every two weeks and water well in dry weather.

Containers may need watering as much as twice a day in very hot weather.

Keep up with the weeding otherwise the weeds will take moisture and nutrients meant for your flowers.

Take time out to sit in your garden and enjoy!

Lawn Keep mowing regularly unless there is a drought. Set the mower blade slightly higher than before so that if it becomes very hot the grass will not dry out so much.

RICH TEA CHOCOLATE TRAYBAKE INGREDIENTS 225g / 8 oz rich tea biscuits 50g / 1¾ oz / 3 tablespoons unsalted butter 125g / 4½ oz golden caster sugar 1 free range egg, lightly beaten 100g / 3½ oz dark chocolate

Topping

125g / 4½ oz dark chocolate 75g / 4½ oz milk chocolate 50g / 1¾ oz white chocolate METHOD 1. Lightly grease a small round cake tin (15cm, 6 inch in diameter), with a removable base.

Place a circle of baking parchment in the base. Set aside.

2. Crunch up the rich tea biscuits into small pieces, leaving some that are larger at about 1cm / ½ inch.

Cream the butter and caster sugar together, then add the egg and whisk again.

3. Break the dark chocolate into pieces and place in a heatproof bowl and melt over simmering water.

When melted, add the sugar-butter-egg mix to the chocolate and stir in until melted and thickened to a light custard texture, which will take a couple of minutes.

4. Stir up the broken biscuit pieces until throughly coated.

Transfer the chocolatey biscuit mix into the cake tin, making sure that the pieces are squashed right into all the gaps to make a firm, continuous base.

Put into the fridge for about 1 hour until thoroughly set.

5. Remove the base from the fridge and leave at room temperature while you do prepare the dark chocolate.

Break the dark chocolate into pieces and place in a heatproof bowl and melt over simmering water.

While it is melting, gently slide the prepared biscuit base out of the cake tin.

Spread the melted chocolate over the base. smoothing until nice and even.

WHAT A DIFFERENCE A GAME MAKES!

espite the huge disappointment of both the performance and the result it was still a great day out at Wembley, but the dejected feeling we’ve all had since was never more strongly amplified than the day the forthcoming season’s fixtures were released.

Instead of planning trips to Manchester United, Chelsea and Arsenal we are once again having to beat the now well-worn path to places like Brentford, Ipswich, Leeds, Brighton and Fulham.

The big thing, however, is that instead of being a very small fish in a considerably dangerous pool, Aitor Karanka’s work during the summer could well find ‘Boro enjoying another hugely competitive season next time around and there really is a lot

to be said for expectation above trepidation.

We’ll have to see what happens in the transfer market over the next couple of months, but there is already a more vibrant atmosphere around the Riverside and the fourteen thousand committed season ticket holders already signed up suggests gates will increase this year.

Let’s hope all those people so desperate for Wembley tickets decide to return in their droves because the atmosphere in the last two sold-out games at the Riverside was fantastic and we could all do with much more of that!

Team-wise, we’ve almost certainly lost any hope we had of retaining Patrick Bamford so a proven goal scorer is obviously the biggest priority.

But while we need that more than anything else so does every other team in the country, so finding someone to replace Bamford’s goals will not be easy. But - as was said many times last year - ‘in Aitor we trust!’

The unbelievable success of both the under 18s and the under 21s last season could obviously suggest there is talent coming through but it’s many years since ‘Boro managed to rear a natural goal scorer, creating instead a production line of midfielders that have brought many millions to the club in transfer fees.

In that respect it will be interesting to see if Adam Reach will be able to resurrect the excellent early season form he showed last season. It’s also been nice to see Ben Gibson perform so well at international level!

Anyway, we can only look forward to the results of Aitor’s work in the transfer market during July and August. He’s done well so far and we can only hope that continues.
