he great debate on the use of technology in football will continue unabated until the authorities finally come to their senses and make use of the huge number of cameras and the consequent visual proof they provide that is at their disposal.

Those against the concept will argue that such facilities are not available right down to the game’s grass roots but when millions of pounds are at stake for clubs at the top end of the football pyramid it really has become vital that games are not decided by some of the shocking refereeing decisions we have witnessed this season.

Speaking as we were about people who can no longer cope as they once did brings us to a real exception.

The current series of ‘The Voice’ has included several excellent examples of the four judges performing classic songs together and at 75 Sir Tom Jones more than holds his own.

Still fit looking and comparatively slim, his voice - despite his increasing years - has lost none of its power and timbre and he is still great to listen to.

Sadly, some of his contemporaries can no longer boast the same quality. Two other ‘Sirs’ immediately spring to mind with Paul McCartney and Cliff Richard perfect examples of not knowing when to pack in. The’ Jones boy’ has no such problems. He’s still ‘the daddy!

And finally - ‘Off their rockers’ While on the subject of ageism, we were recently thrilled to discover one of the funniest television concepts we’ve seen for a long time.

‘Off their rockers ‘ is a reality show that features a bunch of seventy and eighty year olds being secretly filmed approaching young people in the street with really weird requests.

The response from the young people is nothing short of hilarious, but to their credit - and to the credit of the younger generation as a whole - they show true empathy with this ancient generation who - thanks to the format of the programme have suddenly forced themselves upon them.

It’s pretty difficult to describe the goings on without relating endless examples of the scenarios the old people create but believe us, it is really, really worth watching.
