Zanshin Martial Arts Centre Kicks Off in Saltburn
T
he brand new Zanshin Martial Arts and Self-Defence Centre opened its doors to the public on Saturday the 7th February, as part of the grand opening of the fantastic new Earthbeat Centre (The old primary school) in Saltburn. The day was a huge success, not only for Zanshin, but for The Earthbeat Centre as a whole, with more than 1200 people through the door. According to Mark Paterson (the founder and senior instructor of Zanshin) “the open day was
bigger than any of us imagined it would be, with people flooding in, as soon as the doors opened at 9am”. Mark, his wife Donna and instructors John and Drew, were kept busy all day, answering questions from members of the public about martial arts classes and self-defence training that Zanshin offers. Throughout the day, instructors John and Drew demonstrated Jiyu-Jutsu techniques, aswell as holding Little Samurai (Jiyu-Jutsu for very young children) and Junior Jiyu-Jutsu (JiyuJutsu for older children) classes, for anyone who fancied giving it a go. Mark Paterson did several demonstrations of Real Life Self-Defence (Marks own system) against armed and unarmed attackers. Mark also gave a self-defence lesson in front of an audience, to Caroline, a volunteer who had never trained in self-defence before Mark and his team would like to thank everyone who came along and we hope to see you all soon. A Smoke-Free Alternative from Mirage
S
moking is highly addictive, bad for your health and a big problem in the North. Highly addictive nicotine and habit forming behaviour make it hard for many smokers to quit or even to reduce the number of cigarettes they smoke. But with more than 4,000 chemical compounds present in every cigarette including arsenic, formaldehyde, cyanide and carbon monoxide, the health risk they run with every puff is deadly. According to the National Office of Statistics (NOS) more than 100,000 smokers in the UK die from smoking related causes, and about half of all regular cigarette smokers will eventually go on to be killed by their addiction. They account for more than one-quarter of all cancer deaths and more than a third of all respiratory deaths. More worrying still is the number of people who smoke 40 or more a day and buy cheap imported tobacco to feed their addiction. What they do not realise is that many packets of these cut price fags contain far more harmful substances than ‘real’ tobacco products. Kicking the habit is the only way to avoid nasty smoking-related illnesses and the financial burden the addiction brings. For those who simply cannot quit and still crave a smoking experience, e-cigarettes now offer an alternative to smoking. Companies such as Mirage Cigarettes produce high quality e-cigarettes and liquids. They offer a smoke-free alternative to traditional tobacco-filled cigarettes and are free from tar, but contain the right level of nicotine to satisfy smokers’ cravings. However, despite 50% of the 10 million smokers in the UK having tried e-cigarettes, only 20% of them have continued to use them. Mirage franchisee John Pickard says this Page 28

With so many products on the market, it is hard for smokers to distinguish between new and emerging brands and assess the quality of their products. Mirage was established in 2008 and was one of the first e-cigarette companies to establish itself in the UK. It has over 35 outlets across the country with a large number of those located here in the North, including in Redcar, Guisborough and Middlesbrough. Importantly, Mirage is also a founding member of the Electronic Cigarette Industry Trade Association (ECITA), which was set up to regulate the industry. ECITA ensures standards of excellence are adhered to by all its members, helping them to operate an ethically and legally compliant business. This means that Mirage e-liquids and products comply with ECITA guidelines and testing and offer unrivalled quality. Purchasing a good quality e-cigarette from somewhere like Mirage is essential. One lady has even saved enough to go on holiday and visit her son in Thailand - something she could never do before.” Mirage e-cigarettes come in various forms: disposable non-rechargeable ‘cig-a-like’ products, rechargeable ‘cig-a-like’ products that require a pre-filled cartridge, and rechargeable products that have a tank or reservoir which is filled with liquid nicotine. The company does not sell e-cigarettes to anyone under the age of 18 or who are non-smokers. John says that the aim is to get people away from traditional cigarettes. Smokers
will usually start with a liquid that tastes similar to the brand of tobacco cigarettes that they would usually smoke and contains a level of nicotine that will satisfy their requirements. The idea is that once they are comfortable with the product, they will return every three to four weeks for a consultation, making the switch to fruit or other flavour ‘e-juices’ and lowering their nicotine intake. Changing the flavour of the e-liquid takes away the association smokers have with their habit and the flavour of the tobacco, making it easier to quit altogether. “A quality e-cigarette is cheaper than fake fags,” says John, “whilst providing the smoking experience and nicotine hit they need.” He concluded: “We have to get people off the fags. The Lone Ranger turned to Tonto and said, “Tonto, I want you to run around Silver and see if you can create enough of a breeze to make him start to feel better.” Tonto said, “Sure, Kemosabe” and took off running circles around Silver.
