lear the last of the winter bedding from containers and borders and, if you have not grown your own, buy new summer bedding for planting out once all fear of frost has past.

Once the fear of frosts has passed you can put out your hanging baskets and patio tubs full of summer bedding plants.

Continue to dead head any remaining daffodils and tulips but do not take off the foliage until it is brown and then feed with a liquid fertilizer.

Shade the greenhouse and damp down the floors on hot days after opening vents and doors. Prune spring flowering shrubs and clematis Montana.

Tie in new shoots of honeysuckle and clematis or if you have bare walls or fences now is a good time to plant new climbers.

When the danger of frost has passed plant out cannas and dahlias. Hoe the borders on a regular basis to prevent weeds from getting a hold.

New water lilies that are not tall enough to reach the surface can be placed on upturned pots or bricks but be careful not to puncture the liner. Fruit and Vegetables Put nets over any fruits that are about to ripen to stop the birds eating them.

Remove any strawberry runners so the plants put all their energy into producing fruit.

If a late frost is forecast cover stone fruits with a fleece at night but remove in the morning so that pollinating insects have free access.

Make sure that any fruit trained against a wall or fence receive enough water during

To keep the codling moth from your apple trees hang pheromone traps amongst the trees. Continue with successional sowings of salad crops.

Sow the seeds of Runner and French beans into prepared rows outside or train then up wigwams if you have less room.

If you have not grown your own vegetables from seed you can buy small plug plants cheaply now and fill your garden with these.

If you don’t have a dedicated vegetable bed there are many attractive vegetables such as lollo rosso lettuce, swiss chard and even runner beans that look really good placed between flowering plants as they did in the old days to make a real cottage garden.

Wildlife Be careful when cutting hedges that there is not a bird’s nest in there being used at the moment. If there is leave the hedge uncut until the fledglings have flown the nest.

Neither the birds nor the hedge will suffer.

Keep the bird bath clean and topped up with fresh water.

Keep feeding the birds but make sure there are no large pieces that the mothers could take back to the chicks and choke them.

If you would like to attract the summer visiting birds such as swifts and housemartins you can buy special nesting boxes to put up in the garden. Swallows will make their own nests.

That they both completely love their cars is why a new release of an old favourite is always welcomed by Ford enthusiasts everywhere.

The current Fiesta is among the best selling cars in the UK , and even though we can’t always treat commercial success as an indication of a car’s excellence there is no doubt that the Fiesta is the nation’s favourite super-mini. The reasons are obvious. It’s an excellent car to drive and gives great control and efficient handling. It also offers appealing good looks and comfortable, practical interiors.

Despite that, Ford have this time concentrated on improving both.

The new version is only marginally bigger than its predecessor but the dashboard has been reshaped to free up more internal space and four adults will find it a roomy and comfortable fit. The dash itself has a much classier feel and is far easier to use. The old layout with numerous,

rather complicated buttons has been replaced by a truly effective touch screen that measures 8 inches on the more expensive models and 6.5 inches on the cheaper versions. It sits quite high so a constant eye on the road is not a problem. An even more advantageous aspect, though, is that it allows the kind of pinch and swipe gestures we have become used to on our Smart Phones. And if that doesn’t ring your bell you can also operate the infotainment system with conversational voice commands.

That facility, of course, would probably cost you extra but to many would be well worth the additional expense.

Perhaps one of the main advantages over its rivals is that - unlike most of them - the new Fiesta has retained its policy of offering both three and five door versions with the three door quite a sporty model. Part of that concept is that while designer Ernst Reim had some radical ideas for the restyling of the car it was finally decided that a gradual approach to change made more sense considering the continued popularity of the Fiesta. That’s why, despite a broader front grille, slimmer headlights and horizontal rather than vertical

LOCAL ANSWER tail-lights - all designed to make the car wider and more sophisticated - it is still completely recognisable as a Fiesta.

The engine range is also reminiscent of the previous models, though in all cases they have been upgraded. They include the upgraded version of the current favourite - the 1.0 litre Eco-boost and a new 1.1 litre petrol engine that’s available with either 69 or 84 bhp. In its most efficient form it’s expected to emit just 98g/km of CO2. The 1.5 litre diesel, however, will be the cleanest engine in the range with emissions of just 82g/km.

Cost-wise, Ford will not be offering budget models of the Fiesta as they don’t want to discourage appropriate buyers from the smaller Ka+ that was introduced earlier in the year. The basement cost, however, will still only be around £12,715 - a reduction of some £1080 from the current model. Features of the new range are automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection; automatic parking and rear cross traffic alert that applies the car’s

brakes to avoid reversing into moving traffic.

Trim levels are identical to the current range, from Zetec and Titanium levels through to the higher end Vignale and ST. The last two are not immediately available but will be in the Summer. The Zetec - which has previously been the choice for some 58% of Ford buyers - starts from £14,215 and comes with 15 inch alloys. You’ll also get Quickclear heated windscreen and Ford’s Sync 3 Infotainment system.

The higher range Vignale will be priced from £19,345 for which you get 17inch alloys, unique bodywork , a new front grille, heated leather seats and steering wheel, a panoramic glass roof and a rear view camera.

With a truly economic new entry price and a great range of equipment the new Fiesta will certainly compete against all its immediate rivals and will continue to maintain Ford’s constant popularity amongst the majority of car buyers.

Humour HOW DISORDER IN THE AMERICAN COURTS CAN BE GENUINELY FUNNY!

A

s a young reporter I used to have to sit in a variety of magistrate’s courts for days on end waiting for something interesting to appear. That it rarely did probably accounted for my total disillusionment with the profession but having discovered the following word for word accounts of things that have genuinely taken place in American Court Rooms I think my time would have been much better spent in the States. These are from a book called ‘Disorder in the American Courts,’ and are statements people actually made in court, word for word. How the American court reporters remained calm while these exchanges were taking place is beyond me. I hope you appreciate them as much as I did!

ATTORNEY: What was the first thing your husband said to you that morning?

WITNESS: He said, ‘Where am I, Cathy?’

ATTORNEY: And why did that upset you?

WITNESS: My name is Susan!

ATTORNEY AT A CAR ACCIDENT HEARING: What gear were you in at the moment of the impact?

GOING DOWN WITHOUT A FIGHT...

HOW SAD IS THAT?

I

f ever a moment defined the problems ‘Boro have faced throughout this most disappointing season it was when midfielder Marten De Roon was injured against Bournemouth and replaced by full back Fabio in a match we simply had to win.

It was bad enough that we started the game with three centre halves and only one striker but being one nil down after just two minutes, being a man down after twenty and then rearranging the team formation into three centre halves, three fullbacks, two defensive midfielders and just one up front when we needed at least three goals suggested the game had already been handed to Bournemouth.

As nice a man as he is, it is difficult to imagine that Steve Agnew could possibly be entrusted with the task of getting us back up next season from what we have already found is the most difficult league in football.

With a record of just 2 points from the possible 24 in which he has been at the helm it’s difficult to see how he could make improvements. After all, he’s been coaching the team all season so he also has to take some of the blame for what

went on before he took over.

There has been an awful lot said about Aitor Karanka’s lack of adventure in his preferred formation but the problems that have faced ‘Boro this season have gone much deeper.

His purchases left a lot to be desired with the most baffling – whether he was behind it or not – the six million spent on Patrick Bamford. Equally as bad was the money paid for the hugely underperforming Viktor Fischer, the massive amount spent on De Roon - who simply hasn’t been up to it - and the sums given for Barragan, Bernado and Gestede – none of whom were holding down a first team place at the time.

Add to that the poor performances of Gaston Ramirez in the last three months and It’s quite easy to see why we haven’t been able to compete in the Premier League.

The one shining light in a dreadful season has been the backing of the fans.

Supporting the club through poor, bad and worse, they have never given up, even when Karanka berated them against West Ham for asking for a bit more attacking play. Their performance at least, this

season, deserved an awful lot more than they got!

So where on earth do we go from here?

Steve Gibson has yet another big task to find a manager who can take us on again.

The way this season has played out since December would suggest that unless someone comes in with fresh ideas, an attacking mindset and both knowledge and experience of the Championship the idea that as a team that has just been demoted we’ll be fighting at the top end of the league next season is almost laughable.

Perhaps the most worrying thing is the perception that Middlesbrough is a little town in the freezing cold North East that offers none of the glamour of the bigger cities, so would only really attract people who haven’t made it anywhere else.

So, over to you, Mr Gibson. We wait with baited breath....
