ut back perennials and ornamental grasses to make way for new growth. Plant summer flowering bulbs in well prepared soil. If you have wet soil place a layer of grit in the bottom of the planting hole.

Enliven your garden with some new varieties of herbaceous perennials such as hardy geraniums, heuchera, poppies etc.

Have a continuous supply of flowers for cutting and bringing indoors by either planting suitable perennials such as lupins and delphiniums or by sowing annuals such as cosmos, gypsophila, nicotiana, helichrysum, etc.

Pot up canna rhizomes in a warm, light position to flower in the summer.

This is the best month for planting new roses but never plant a new rose in soil that has grown a rose previously as the new one will suffer from rose transplant sickness. If you must have a rose in a particular place then you will have to change the soil at least 3ft all around the planting hole and 3ft deep. Much easier to find a new home.

Prune established bush and standard roses and add a rose fertiliser around the base of the plant.

Prune summer flowering shrubs such as buddleia, lavatera, hardy fuchsia and

perovskia. Remove any plain green stems from variegated shrubs otherwise they will eventually revert to all green.

Cut off the heads only of daffodils that have finished flowering. Leave all the foliage in place for at least six weeks so that the bulb can renew its energy for flowering next year.

Lawns Check that your mower is in good working order. Raise the mowing height for the first cut of the season.

New lawns can be made using turf but it is best to wait until late in the month or even into April before sowing grass seed.

Towards the end of the month feed the lawn with a high nitrogen fertilizer.

Fruit and Vegetables If you didn’t prune your autumn fruiting raspberries, gooseberries or blueberries there is still time to do it now.

Mulch all fruit with your own compost or well rotted farm manure but make sure it does not actually touch the stems of each plant as this can cause them to rot.

Place cloches or fleece over strawberry plants to bring them on for an earlier crop.

Remove the forcing cover on rhubarb.

Carry on putting food out for birds but make sure there are now no large pieces of food in case the mother bird feeds it to fledglings.

If your wildlife pond does not have any frogspawn try to get some from another pond that has plenty.

Keep the bird bath topped up with water.

THE S90 - VOLVO’S SUCCESSFUL RETURN TO THE LUXURY SALOON SECTOR

W

hen Volvo dropped its S80 model a few years ago it seemed that the Company had forsaken the luxury saloon sector to concentrate on the XC90 crossover vehicle that has since become such a big success.

Possibly as a result of that success, however, part of the technology used in the XC90 has now been adapted into a brand new saloon - the S90 - the second of a new hugely re-engineered new Volvo range. Chinese ownership for the last five years has finally enabled Volvo to rid themselves of any Ford influence and this new generation of unique, elegant sedans is being completely assembled in Sweden.

Available with either the D4 2.0litre motor with 190bph or the D5 2.0litre producing 235bph, the car operates with a superb eight-speed gearbox and

rides on the all-new Scalable Product Architecture platform which will be the basis for multiple future vehicles, including the upcoming V90 wagon.

This frameless design incorporates high-strength steel along with aluminium and Volvo’s latest Pilot Assist

semi-autonomous driving system is standard on all trim levels.

As you would expect with Volvo there are impressive safety features with its City Safety Technology standard on all

models. This combines automatic braking and the very latest collision avoidance systems to keep you as safe as possible on the road. These include pedestrian, cyclist and large-animal detection, run-off road protection and mitigation, lane-departure warning, road-sign information and driver alert.

A ‘Vision Package’ is also available and includes automatically dimmed mirrors, retractable rear-view mirrors, a blind spot monitoring system, cross-traffic alert and a 360-degree surround-view camera.

Internally, the cabin is extremely spacious and encompasses tasteful, luxurious interior design. The fascia features a huge 12inch touch screen from which infotainment, heating, ventilation and telephone systems are all operated.

Volvo’s ‘Sensus’ system operates in a very familiar fashion, as its pinch-andpull zooming, swiping and other functions will come naturally to smart phone users. The display contents are easily customized and if you’re willing to take time to set it up properly is extremely helpful. As with any Volvo, seating is more than comfortable with the rear seats’ split/fold 60/40.

Once on the road, the S90 is a very smooth drive with performance excellent, especially the highly efficient 8-speed automatic transmission.

As far as running costs are concerned, fuel economy is again pretty much what you’d expect. Around 23 miles per gallon running around the town is standard but - properly driven - you could expect to achieve up to 40mpg on the open road.

IT LOOKS LIKE A NAIL BITING CLIMAX

W

hile being in the Premier League has a million advantages (well, ninety million actually) there are still enormous pressures for manager, players, board and supporters alike. The unbelievable financial returns make survival enormously important to the club’s hierarchy and we supporters really can understand why. But from our point of view the need to stay with the big boys has become the catalyst for the kind of football that puts caution over bravery, defence over attack and a reluctance to do anything that might jeopardise our membership of the ‘Gravy Train.’ The result has been some pretty uninspiring performances since promotion.

Perhaps the only contradiction to that has been the emergence of Adama Traore. His amazing speed and wonderful turn of foot has lit up the Riverside every time he’s appeared and most of us feel he justifies the admission money alone.

Yet even he has become brainwashed by the Karanka insistence that every player’s foremost responsibility is to defend and that allowing them to get forward to threaten the opposition is something of a luxury. Adama has already shown he can’t defend and, to be fair, after his totally unnecessary barge into the back of Phil Edwards to give Oxford the free kick that gave them so much stimulation I wouldn’t let him anywhere near our own penalty box. It really isn’t what he’s there for.

That he was - in most of our opinions - substituted prematurely against Oxford - was the reason for the boos that rang around the Riverside as he trudged off. They most certainly started long before Christian Stuani made his way onto the pitch so were in no way directed at him personally.

Which is just as well because Stuani went on to score yet another vitally important goal for us.

Regardless of what people may think about his overall performances he has scored a number of vital goals at very vital times. Brighton in May last year and Sunderland earlier this season are typical examples!

I’m writing this an hour or so after we were drawn against Huddersfield or Manchester City in the quarter finals of the F A Cup and to be honest I think we’d be better off with City. How nice would it be if we could repeat some of our more memorable performances against them. That wonderful away day in 2006 when we won 1-0 to be promoted to the Premiership after Mark Schwartzer’s excellent penalty save springs to mind. As does the 8-1 drubbing on the last day of the season in 2008. Our 2-0 away win in the FA Cup in 2015 is still a fond memory while the most recent reason for confidence was the 1-1 draw at their place in November. All reasons to be cheerful and also reasons to think that another trip to Wembley is not impossible. Are you listening Mark Lawrence?

But, at the time of writing, the most important ninety minutes of our season so far will be at Crystal Palace and once again there is a feeling of inevitability about the outcome. Their recent record has been appalling and because we have certainly picked up in our last few performance the bookies will probably make us favourites. And that, unfortunately, is usually a recipe for disaster where ‘Boro are concerned. Three points would be a huge return, though and with other games against the bottom few sides rapidly following there really is

LOCAL ANSWER a chance to make some kind of headway up the table. And that could be vital with winnable games against Stoke, Sunderland, Swansea, Hull, Burnley and Bournemouth all scheduled in our next eight fixtures. Failure to open a gap could be crucial, however, with Chelsea, Liverpool, Manchester City and Arsenal big challenges in our last six games!

It promises to be a nail biting end to the campaign and both Steve Gibson and Aitor Karanka surely deserve a second season in the Premiership where the team can hopefully kick on again and create further improvement. Promotion from the Championship has always been a huge step but those teams that make it through their first season have shown that it is possible to ultimately establish themselves. The likes of West Brom, Stoke, Watford and Southampton have all achieved that over the past few years. We did it ourselves for that wonderful eleven season run in the top flight and it really is to be hoped we can survive and cement another spell of Premier League football.

The excellent crowds so far this season show that the Teesside public are able to support a top flight team. Fingers crossed they can continue to do so well into the future.
