In The Garden

Y

ou will always find the odd shrub that you have not pruned, such as Buddleia, Caryopteris, Hydrangea and some of the Winter flowering shrubs that have finished flowering can be pruned now.

Late March is a good time to carry out pruning on Evergreen shrubs that may have suffered frost damage such as Hebes with the young growing tips scorched by frost. Never prune members of the Daphne family as they dislike pruning. Some climbing shrubs such as Jasminum and Chaenomeles can be pruned immediately after flowering. All rose pruning should be completed by mid March.

Lawns Work on the lawn really begins this month.

As soon as the grass has started to grow and the weather and ground conditions are favourable, rake the lawn to remove leaves and surface rubbish. Do not rake too vigorously at this stage or you will damage the grass.

The first cut should merely remove the top of the grass - close cutting at this stage will result in the grass yellowing. Choose a day when the surface of the lawn is dry.

It is the time to apply the first moss kill of

the season. Choose a period in the month when the weather is mild, when the grass is dry and frost free. Avoid mowing the lawn three days before and at least four days after treatment.

You may have to retreat the lawn in four to six weeks time to eradicate all the moss.

It is important not to get any moss killing chemical on to any shrubs or tender plants planted in borders around the lawn.

Do not compost grass clippings from the first cut of the lawn following any form of chemical weed or moss control treatment.

It is also a good time this month to do any patching repairs either with new turf cut into any bare patches or to re-seed such areas.

Herbaceous Border Unlike so many bulbous rooted plants, Snowdrops can be lifted and divided as soon as the flowers fade. It is advisable to lift and replant in this way every few years.

If the bulbs are too closely packed together, many may fail to flower in future years.

Always plan your borders before you begin planting and plant in groups for maximum colour effect. Single plants give a less effective display.

LOCAL ANSWER Many established herbaceous plants will be growing lots of young growth now, you may need to thin out some of the growth.

Cuttings can be taken of some plants such as Delphiniums, Phlox, Lupins and Penstemons. These cuttings will need the protection of a glasshouse or frame.

As the weather improves with warmer days some of the hardier annual seeds can be sown now directly into the garden.

Fruit Garden Plums and Damsons will be coming into flower this month. When these and the blackthorn in the hedgerows show their first white flowers, country folk take it as a sign of a cold spell which is called a “Blackthorn Winter”.

Peach, Nectarines and Apricot trees growing on walls will also come into flower now.

This time of year there are few insects flying about so hand pollination with a small artists paint brush will aid pollination and lead to a bigger fruit yield, simply brush the pollen from one flower to another.

Raspberries will benefit from a mulch of well-rotted manure not only to feed the plants but also protect the roots and keep them moist. As Apples, Pears and Plums come into leaf watch for the first signs of insect damage, spray as soon as pests appear. It is very important not to spray any insecticide or fungicide whilst fruit trees are in flower, wait until flowering has finished.

Vegetable Garden The work really begins now with early sowings of onions, parsnips and broad beans directly into the garden. Broad beans and peas that have been shown in pots in the greenhouse or frame should be hardened off now before planting out.

Towards the end of the month, carrots, turnips, radish and lettuce can be sown.

Also remember to check any Rhubarb that you are forcing, those young tender shoots will soon grow with some warm Spring days.

f you’ve always yearned for an expensive-looking car that will stand on your drive and make the neighbours envious but simply can’t afford it there’s some good news emanating from the Renault owned Dacia company.

As far as running costs are concerned, the car is not as economical nor as lowemission as many of the more modern alternatives, but you will still get a very decent return.

ALASTAIR BROWNLEE A TRUE ‘BORO LEGEND

A

lastair Brownlee wasn’t just ‘one of us.’ He was ALL OF US, because every ‘Boro supporter who has earned the name couldn’t help empathising with this lovely man’s incredibly biased commentaries; couldn’t resist laughing at his absolute refusal to acknowledge any criticism of his beloved ‘Boro from his neighbouring ‘expert’ and couldn’t help being thrilled at the excitement he shared with us all when his team scored a goal.

We all loved him because he epitomised the enormously strong feelings every football supporter has for the club to which they feel tribally and permanently attached.

I first met Ali back in the mid eighties when he wrote a weekly ‘Boro comment for the local free sheet ‘The Cleveland Clarion,’ and

regardless of where ‘Boro were playing on the Tuesday night he would always have his piece presented by the requisite 10am on the Wednesday morning.

Such was his optimistic enthusiasm that I often accused him of writing his piece on what had turned out to be a great ‘Boro’ performance before he set off. ‘Yes,’ he joked, ‘I have a win and lose piece written before every game.’ ‘What happens if they draw?’ I asked. ‘That,’ said Ali, is as bad as getting beat!’

That just about sums him up, but how proud would he have been for what turned out to be one of the most emotional days I have ever had as a ‘Boro fan. Never mind that night in Eindhoven or the Wembley trip last May. They were things we can get over and when you’ve been a ‘Boro fanatic for as long as I have you get used to such downfalls. But the response to his incredibly sad demise was one of the most touching and poignant experiences I’ve ever had as a ‘Boro fan.

At Leeds on the Monday night following his death even the opposition fans joined in when his face appeared on their big screen. It was a wonderful gesture from the Leeds club and their fans and I’m convinced will go a long way to mending some of the fences between our two clubs

LOCAL ANSWER that have been erected over the years. But it wasn’t just Leeds. So many other clubs acknowledged his contribution to both Middlesbrough and football combined and I feel no shame in admitting to shedding many, many tears as the tributes poured in.

I know a couple of weeks have gone by when you read this and a fantastic number of tributes and outpourings of love have already been published. It would, however, have been impossible to have produced this edition without contributing to his memory.

Perhaps the most amazing aspect of his life and his unique love for both his town and its football club is that he will be remembered with equal warmth and love as the football ‘greats’ with whom he was so familiar.

Rest in peace Ali and let’s hope that next season you’re watching Premiership football from above.... ....and make sure Gabriel’s wearing a ‘Boro scarf!

PEANUT BUTTER CUP BROWNIE BOTTOM CHEESECAKE (with Butterscotch) INGREDIENTS: BROWNIE CRUST 1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips 1 cup peanut butter chip 6 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted 1 1/4 cups sugar 1 tablespoon vanilla extract 2 eggs 1 cup all-purpose flour 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour 1/3 cup unsweetened cocoa 1/2 teaspoon baking powder 1/2 teaspoon salt CHEESECAKE FILLING 2 lbs cream cheese, softened 5 eggs, at room temperature 1 1/2 cups firmly packed brown sugar 1 cup smooth peanut butter 1/2 cup whipping cream 1 tablespoon vanilla extract 6 peanut butter cups, cut into quarters Decoration 6 peanut butter cups, cut carefully in half 1/2 cup whipping cream 1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips 1 cup peanut butter cup

You can choose how much butterscotch you would like in this dessert.

It can be added to the cheesecake mix (3 tbsp added to the mixture should do the job), or it can be poured over the top for decoration.

METHOD: 1. Heat oven to 180°c. Grease 9-inch springform pan with butter.

2. Stir together butter, sugar and vanilla in large bowl with spoon or wire whisk. Add eggs; stir until well blended. Stir in flour, cocoa, baking powder and salt; blend well.

Spread in prepared pan.

3. Bake 25 to 30 minutes or until brownie begins to pull away from side of pan.

Meanwhile make cheesecake layer (see next page).

4. Immediately after removing brownie from oven, sprinkle milk chocolate chips, peanut butter chips and peanut butter cups over brownie surface.

5. Spoon cheesecake mixture over chips.

Turn down oven to 170°c.

LOCAL ANSWER Cheesecake Filling: (makes extra) 6. Beat cream cheese in bowl of electric mixer until smooth. Add eggs, one at a time, beating well after each addition.

7. Add sugar, peanut butter and cream; mix until smooth. Stir in vanilla.

8. Pour filling into prepared crust.

9. Double-wrap springform pan with aluminum foil to prevent water seeping in.

Place springform pan into a larger baking pan. Pour hot water into the larger pan so that the water comes 1 inch up the sides of the springform pan.

10. Bake at 170°c for one and a half hours, or until firm and lightly browned.

11. Remove from the oven and allow to cool on a wire rack for one hour. Run a knife along the edge of the cake to loosen it from the pan somewhat. Refrigerate for at least 4 hours before decorating.

Decorate as desired, serve immediately and enjoy!
