Don’t be tempted to buy your summer bedding yet, unless you have a greenhouse, conservatory or cold frame that you can store them in. A late April / early May frost is not uncommon in the UK. Once the pond plants start to grow again, especially the oxygenating plants, these will use up the nutrients and create shade, reducing the amount of algae. To speed up the clearing of the water, drop a string bag of barley straw into the pond.

barley underneath this, in still ponds weigh it down so it floats just below the surface of the water. Remove the barley after about six months before it completely rots down, polluting the water.

Prune overgrown or newly planted blackcurrants back hard - almost to ground level, this will ‘open up’ the plant and encourage new shoots, producing fruit the following season. Blackcurrants mainly fruit on last year’s growth. Normal pruning is restricted to removing the old fruiting branches, just after fruiting, leaving new shoots to bear fruit next year.

Tidy up any remaining leaves and general garden rubbish. It’s home to slugs, snails, vine weevil and woodlice and can introduce disease and infection into your garden.

Geranium cuttings should be taken now.

Cut off a 8cm (3in) shoot just below a leaf joint (node), remove all but the top pair of leaves and insert the cuttings 4cm (1.5in) into a small pot of potting compost. Gently water in the cuttings and place in a warm,

Car Review

2014 – A big year for new car launches!

2

014 sees a number of quite spectacular new car launches from most of the world’s major manufacturers. The more notable – and therefore the least accessible to most of us – include the BMW M3/ M4, Lamborghini Huracan, Jaguar XFR-S Sportbrake and Mercedes S63 AMG coupe.

But while there’s a great deal for the high performance, high cost enthusiast to ponder over there are fortunately loads more for the man who likes something a little more realistic and somewhere within his budget. The third generation Mini, Mitsubishi Outlander, Ford EcoSport, Skoda Octavia Scout and the Renault Twingo are all examples of cars we can look forward to seeing in 2014. So no matter what your budget, preference, disposition or need may be there is going to be something for everyone!

For this month’s edition we decided to have a look at the newly released Renault - Clio GT line. Here’s the result: The Renault Clio GT Line is a subRenaultsport model that emulates the style and sportiness of the current hatchback

but with economy very much in mind.

Prices start at £17,395, a saving of £1600 on the Clio 200 Turbo, with lower running costs created by the reduced power on offer. Instead of a 1.6-litre turbocharged petrol engine with 197bhp, the GT Line makes do with a more compact 1.2 but is also turbocharged to create a respectable 118bhp and 140lb ft. Initial acceleration will take you from 0-62mph in 9.9sec with a top speed of 121mph. A six-speed gearbox is standard and helps fuel economy reach 54mpg. Its low CO2 emissions of 120g/km mean further savings with an annual road tax demand of just £30.

Driving Just like the standard Clio, it’s impressive, with an efficient chassis offering great control and decent performance, though to keep up good speed you need to maintain momentum as much as possible. This lack of genuine pace is also emphasised by the comparatively slow reaction of the gearbox but both slight deficiencies are more than compensated for by the economy you’ll enjoy. For most drivers it’s fine at cruising speed and gets about really well in the crowded roads of modern Britain.

LOCAL ANSWER Looks Externally a GT-spec nose with LED lighting, a rear spoiler, twin tailpipes and 17in alloys in an anthracite shade matched by the rear diffuser, door mirrors and sill inserts gives it a really stylish look. Inside, further anthracite touches replace red RS accents, while aluminium pedals and a leather steering wheel with fixed paddles are similar to the RS 200. The sports seats are firm, comfortable and wrap you nicely into an adjustable driving position. A 7-inch media interface includes sat-nav and Bluetooth as standard.

The one strange aspect is that despite the reduction in power, the dashboard – and indeed the tailgate – boast the Renaultsport badge, an indication that Renault clearly wants to build up the sub-brand’s image. That is slightly ironic given that despite only weighing 18kg less than the RS200 it has a notable 79bhp power deficit that limits pace and acceleration. The better drivers will manage that well with careful engine management, however, so it shouldn’t really represent a problem. Further compensation comes with an engine that is not only impressively smooth, but is almost silent when cruising. Braking, meanwhile, is efficient and effective.

Renault have done a good job of making the Clio GT Line look just like the full-strength Renaultsport, which might well upset buyers of the real thing. They can, however, pride themselves on the fact that performance-wise there is absolutely no comparison! But for the family man or the safe-mode driver who wants to look sporty but isn’t particularly bothered about fast getaways from traffic lights or adopting a ‘Boy-Racer’ persona the car is great and represents an economic and safe way to look really good on the road!

Sport We Can Only Look For Improvement Next Season

N

ow that Championship football is confirmed and the playoffs have ceased to be the pipe dream we enjoyed for a brief spell we can only look towards next season and hope for better. I for one have a much better feeling about our long term prospects than I had at the beginning of this season because we have at least proved that there are some good players in the squad. The one redeeming factor in a term that has brought one disappointment after another has been the ‘goals against’ column in the last couple of months. We all knew that cutting out the constant defensive errors had to be Aitor Karanka’s first priority when he was appointed and he has certainly taken care of the problem.

Sadly it has been at the expense of the ‘goals for’ column and has also seemed to have led to an alarming spate of red cards.

The determination to keep clean sheets has also meant a fairly inflexible approach from the manager and his insistence of constantly playing a lone striker up front with little or no support while twinning the decidedly uncreative pairing of Whitehead and Leadbitter in midfield has clearly not worked yet has been a consistent factor throughout a number of barren spells.

You have to feel a bit sorry for Danny Graham because the supply to him has been virtually non-existent and regardless of how much work he is prepared to do he’s not getting the ball in the right areas. There’s little chance of him regaining the goal scoring form of a couple of seasons ago because I’ve lost count of the number of times a cross has gone into the opposition box only to find him on his own with his back to goal and no-one following up from midfield.

If that is Karanka’s preferred ‘modus operandi’ – and it certainly looks like it is - then it will be interesting to see whether he will be able to not only find, but attract the kind of players who can make it work. There obviously has to be a bit of a clear-out but with so many players either out of contract or currently on loan that shouldn’t be too difficult or - more importantly - too expensive. That would hopefully allow him to bring in what will be much more his own squad.

His Spanish influence was one of the reasons for optimism when he arrived but apart from the two loan signings from his mate Mourinho there hasn’t so far been much evidence of it. Kenneth Omeruo has been excellent, of course,

and it would be great if we could hold on to him for next season, especially as his partnership with Ben Gibson promised much prior to their joint sendings off against Derby County.

The big problem - as always - is financing any prospective deals. Karanka obviously doesn’t rate Jason Steele and at one time he would have been a possible source of reasonable revenue. The manager’s failure to play him since he returned from injury, however, is likely to have reduced his value considerably.

There has been interest in Leadbitter as well, but as one of the more consistent players do we really want to see him go?

So, as usual, we will have to look, watch and wait to see what changes are made in the summer and whether they will give us the prospect of a much better time come August. In the meantime we can only hope that the bit of momentum created with four consecutive wins prior to the enormous disappointment of the Milwall defeat give existing fans enough confidence to renew their season tickets. Having said that it’s very hard to see – unless something really spectacular happens – how the club is going to be able to increase attendances or attract the kind of lucrative sponsorship that could make a difference. So whatever Aitor Karanka does during the summer is going to be conducted on a tight budget.

That, however, is what he’s there for, and I for one would love to see him succeed!

It really is going to be an interesting four months.

MAKE THE MOST OF MAY’S BROAD BEAN HARVEST!

A

s an avid allotment holder I find it amazing that even though many of my neighbouring enthusiasts always have a great harvest of broad beans many of them don’t seem to know exactly what to do. They really are a healthy, tasty and nutritious vegetable that complements bacon and pancetta, go well in omelettes and frittatas, make a hearty addition to salads, or are great as a seasonal vegetable with your roast. At their best in May when the beans are still young and fresh here’s a couple of great ideas to make the most of them.

Chicken with creamy pesto and broad beans recipe - Serves 4, ready in 15 minutes Ingredients: 2 packs mini chicken breast fillets : 3 tablespoons green pesto : 200g tub half-fat crème fraîche : 200g fresh or frozen (and thawed) broad beans : handful finely chopped parsley (optional) Method: Take chicken breasts and cut each fillet in half diagonally.

Pan-fry the chicken with a splash of olive oil over a high heat for 6-8 minutes until tender. Stir in pesto and cook for 1 minute. Add crème fraîche and bring to a simmer. Mix in broad beans and cook for 2-3 minutes, until the beans are tender and the sauce has thickened.

Divide between plates, sprinkle with finely chopped parsley, if you like, and serve with boiled new potatoes.

Crusted trout with minted lemon broad beans - Serves 4, ready in 30 minutes Ingredients: 50g pitted green olives : 60g breadsticks : small handful fresh coriander : 1 heaped tbsp plain flour : 1 large free-range egg : 4 x 125g skinless trout fillets : 400g frozen broad beans : zest of ½ lemon, plus 1½ tbsp lemon juice : 1 tbsp roughly chopped fresh mint : 2 tbsp fat-free natural yogurt : Boiled new potatoes, sliced, to serve : Lemon wedges, to serve Method: Preheat the oven to 200°C/fan180°C/ gas 6. In a processor, whizz the olives, breadsticks and coriander to crumbs. Season and spread out onto a plate. Spread the flour out on another plate and crack the egg into a shallow bowl and beat lightly. Turn each trout fillet in the flour, shake off the excess, then coat in the egg and finally the crumb mixture. Put on a nonstick baking tray and bake for 12 minutes, until cooked. Meanwhile, cook the beans in a pan of boiling salted water for 3-4 minutes, until tender. Drain, slip out of their skins, then mix with the lemon zest and juice, mint and yogurt. Divide the potatoes between plates, top with the trout and beans. Serve with lemon wedges.

The Good Old Days

PROOF THAT “THE GOOD OLD DAYS” REALLY WERE GOOD! Pub conversions can often be very enlightening and a recent discussion with my friends of well over fifty years led to a few reasons why - despite the unbelievable progress in technology since we were all kids in a small County Durham mining village - we enjoyed so many advantages that kids these days simply can’t appreciate. For instance: We had loads of friends, loads of natural exercise that kept us slim and fit (we called it ‘playing out’), fresh food cooked by our mothers because there was no such thing as ready-made fast meals,’ and eating those family meals together round the table where we discussed everything under the sun.

My mum used to cut chicken, chop eggs, spread butter on bread and slice meat on the same cutting board with the same knife and no bleach.

I can’t ever remember getting food poisoning..

in wax paper in a brown paper bag, not in ice pack coolers, but I can’t remember getting e-coli.

Almost all of us would have rather gone swimming in the river or at the beach instead of a pristine pool (talk about boring), but we knew instinctively which parts of the river were safe and would never have taken a bet to try and swim across the whole width.

We all took P.E at school and risked permanent injury with a pair of sandshoes instead of having crosstraining athletic shoes with air cushion soles and built in light reflectors that cost as much as a small car. I can’t recall any injuries but they must have happened because they tell us how much safer we are now.

If we got in trouble at school we were given the cane. We accepted that as the natural result of disobedience and rather than make us worse it taught us the meaning of discipline and helped

us grow up to accept the rules and to honour and respect our elders.

We had 40+ kids in our class and yet we all learned to read and write, do maths and spell almost all the words needed to write a grammatically correct letter...

FUNNY THAT!!

We all said prayers in school and sang the national anthem, and staying in detention after school caught all sorts of negative attention. We learned our times tables by reciting them every day.

I thought that I was supposed to accomplish something before I was allowed to be proud of myself.

I just can’t remember being bored without computers, Playstation, Nintendo, X-box or 270 digital TV cable stations because we weren’t!!

Oh yeah...and where was the antibiotics and sterilisation kit when I got that bee sting? I could have been killed!

We played “King of the Hill” on piles of gravel left on vacant building sites and when we got hurt, mum pulled out the 2/6p bottle of iodine and then we got our backside spanked. Nowadays it would be a trip to the emergency room, followed by a 10 day dose of antibiotics and then mum calls the lawyer to sue the contractor for leaving a horribly vicious pile of gravel where it was such a threat. How can that be progress?

I don’t know a single person who was told back then that they were from a ‘dysfunctional family.’ How could we possibly have known that?

Who the hell invented group therapy and/or anger management classes? We had mates who told us not to be such a prat.

Sadly, we must have been so duped by all those social ills that we didn’t even notice that the entire country was not only NOT taking Prozac but had no idea what the hell it was!

How did we ever survive?
