Return Of Some Of Your Favourites

I

t's always great news when your favourite TV series return from a break, but when two real favourites come back almost together it's even better. Following a brilliant Christmas Special that was among this year's most watched Christmas programmes, the first part of Series 3 of the absolutely wonderful 'Call the Midwife' made its appearance in late January and it certainly didn't disappoint. Great story lines, superb acting, a bit of humour, loads of pathos; what more can you ask from a series? It's hard to equate the wild and whacky Miranda from her own series with the sensitive, very posh 'Chummy' in 'Midwife,' but Miranda Hart plays her with real skill.

Not only is the programme hugely entertaining, though, it is also an accurate historical comment on the appalling conditions that people were forced to endure in London's East End during the fifties. Originally based on the memoirs of the author Jennifer Worth who sadly died from terminal cancer just as filming on the first series was beginning, the producers and writer Heidi Thomas used up most of her material in the first six episodes. Because of its huge success, however, further series were demanded and Heidi had to find authentic scenarios from the period from which she could compile more episodes. In consequence she has since become very good friends with the nuns who were an integral part of the story lines and has also interviewed countless midwives and mothers who were about in that period and who could provide plenty of new material from their own experiences. The result is an impeccable piece of television that makes Sunday night a joy.

PAGE 4 | Local Answer - Issue 47

LOCAL ANSWER Also returning, but as usual with much less dignity, is the hugely popular 'Top Gear.' Despite running a trailer for Series 21, however, they still haven't - at the time of writing - officially announced a start date. If anything, it's a typically teasing ruse to create maximum publicity for Clarkson, May and Hammond, but those in the know expect a February 2nd start. By the time you read this you'll obviously know! It's amazing how popular the series is, though, and even people like myself who couldn't care less what they drive, find it enjoyable once you get used to Jeremy Clarkson's enormous ego and unbelievable arrogance! There are so many car fanatics out there that a programme in which the stars are undoubtedly the cars was bound to succeed. That this is series number 21 is all the evidence you need that it most certainly has! AND NOW FOR SOMETHING NEW - OR IS IT? BBC have also launched a completely new series for Sunday nights featuring those other old favourites ‘The Three Musketeers.’ With several previous TV series and numerous films outlining their escapades in 17th century Paris you would think it had already been done to death but this is as close to Alexander Dumas’ masterpiece as chalk is to cheese. Apart from featuring the same main characters and the fact it takes place in Paris there is very little left of the original story of D’Artagnan leaving his farm to join the King’s Musketeers. Instead we have something of a bawdy romp that races along at a hundred miles an hour and can’t make its mind up whether it’s a comedy or a thriller. It starts with D’Artagnan’s father being murdered. Dumas must be turning in his grave! Despite all that it’s action packed, good entertainment and - provided you’re not looking for something that religiously follows the original book - quite entertaining.

Valentine’s Day

On A Budget

V

alentine's Day is the most romantic day of the year so it’s natural that we all want to celebrate it in a way that feels unique to our loved ones. It’s a day that is celebrated with a great deal of enthusiasm by people of all ages - young, old, middleaged, teens and adults. It is the day when people look forward to doing something special and gifting something unique to show their love towards their dear ones. The way this special occasion is celebrated differs from individual to individual depending on his budget as well as his preferences, so how we men can manage to impress our partner on a tight budget is the real question! Making Valentine's Day remarkable can only be down to our own thoughtful ideas but the most important thing is that whatever we do - straight from the heart – should be appreciated. Here are a few scenarios that will hopefully make everyone – boys and girls alike - think about how to get the best out of this magical day. 1. With very little money to spare on gifts, something as simple as a rose should make her realise you care. If she doesn’t react to that kind of thought then she obviously doesn’t realise your financial predicament. Do you really want to spend your life with someone who wants to live above their means? 2. Prepare the morning tea when your Valentine wakes up and present a bunch of PAGE 6 | Local Answer - Issue 47

flowers to start the day on a celebratory note. Giving such a surprise to your partner in the morning will pave the way for a delightful day. 3. Celebrate Valentine’s Day by wrapping up and taking her out to a park where you can just talk for a while. Or take her out to a place of natural beauty that has no entry fees yet has a romantic charm. Follow that up by buying her a few flowers and chocolates while you enjoy each other’s company. 4. Rustle up a dish using available supplies. This will cost you very little yet should still prove to be effective if she realises you’ve made the effort. Buy some fresh flowers and decorate the table with them to make your partner feel amazing. She should love the idea! 5. If you are not much of the cook, then find a nice place you can go for a meal. There are plenty of meal deals available to all budgets. 6. If you’re lucky enough to have a few spare pounds to really surprise her look for great spa deals and you are sure to find a suitable rejuvenating package for both yourself as well as your partner. Let your senses relax as you both enjoy a day of real pampering! The most important part of Valentine’s Day is that you are spending it with the person for whom you really care.

Shrove Tuesday

What’s It All About?

I

t probably brands me as a bit weird but for some strange reason I always seem to have been aware of the origins and meaning of Shrove Tuesday. In a discussion in the pub last Friday night, however, there wasn't a single person in my twelve strong team of mates who knew exactly what it is, why it's celebrated, when it is and why the pancakes? So I had to tell them and in the process became known as 'Mr Boring.' Since I have a pretty thick skin, though, I am now going to educate our readers and hope that somebody somewhere will appreciate the knowledge! It all comes down to Easter, actually, and Shrove Tuesday is always the day before Ash Wednesday - the start of the Christian period of Lent. This was traditionally recognised as a celebration of the period of forty days and forty nights that Jesus spent in the wilderness where he fasted and prayed in the build up to the beginning of his ministry. The Church therefore uses it as the forerunner to its most important Festival - Easter. The beginning of this vital period in the Christian calendar is Shrove Tuesday - 'Shrove' being the word for the forgiving of wrongdoings. Its date varies each year depending PAGE 8 | Local Answer - Issue 47

on the date of Easter, but this year it's on March 4th. Long ago, and because it was the day before the Lent fasting began, it was traditionally a day of feasting and atonement. People went to church to confess and would be 'shriven' or forgiven their sins before the start of Lent. As rich foods such as eggs and butter were forbidden during Lent, however, one way of using them up would be to make pancakes and that is how that particular custom began. A number of traditions have grown up around this date, one being the pancake race. An interesting reason for its origins dates back to 1445 when one woman was still making pancakes as the church bells rang. and rather than be late she took her frying pan and pancake and ran to church. It's a nice thought, but what the barbaric origin of events like the Sedgefield ball game where hundreds of young men fight over a ball on Shrove Tuesday are is anybody's guess! Anyway, enjoy your pancakes but why not try the crepe suzette recipe we've included elsewhere in this edition. It's delicious!

Make a will in February and support

BUTTERWICK HOSPICE Do you own a house? Own a vehicle? Have many possessions? Have life insurance? If you answered YES to any of the above questions the next question you should ask yourself is how soon and where can I draw up a will. By drawing up a will you gain peace of mind by knowing that you have provided properly for all your loved ones’ futures. During February Butterwick Hospice is working in partnership with Jacksons solicitors. The solicitors are giving their time and expertise freely. All we ask is that you make a donation to the hospice of £75 for a single will or £95 for a pair of matching wills.

Here are five good reasons to write a will! 1 2 3 4 5

To make sure that your money, property and possessions are passed on the way you want. If you have young children, to choose who will look after them if neither parent is alive. To say what is to happen if your whole family is involved in a fatal accident. To clarify your wishes for your burial or cremation To leave a legacy to charity.

Car review

KIA Sportage New Styling & Increased Equipment

T

he Sportage is already Kia’s best selling UK car, so this revised version that will become available in showrooms this month is expected to increase sales for the Korean company. Improved styling and increased standard equipment are both factors that should be popular with fans of the car while the new design offers the kind of bold looks favoured by most car enthusiasts. Engine line up consists of 1.6 and 2.0 litre petrol engines, and 1.7 and 2.0 litre diesel versions. Both 2.0 litre versions have both 4 wheel drive and automatic transmission available as an option. The car retains the popular ‘Tiger Nose’ frontage first introduced in 2007, but this has had a bit of an upgrade with a chrome surround and a redesigned central mesh. That means the sharp headline design so fitting to the big SUV shape is thankfully still there. Top end models also have LED lighting and a new style shark -fin antenna and all models

PAGE 12 | Local Answer - Issue 47

benefit from redesigned 16, 17 and 18 inch alloy wheels. Improved windscreen glass has also been added to make the cabin extremely quiet. The new rearward slope of the C pillar, meanwhile, adds an attractive angular look to the window line and also affords more light and visibility to rear passengers. Another important addition to the new model includes Trailer Stability Assist on all models to make towing safer through an electronic stability control system that gently applies some front braking if it detects a potential loss of control.

LOCAL ANSWER Other standard ‘extras’ include climate control, electric windows, leather covered steering wheel and gear knob, front fog lights, automatic rain sensing windscreen wipers, Bluetooth and IPod connectivity, cruise control and a multi function steering wheel. Storage space is good with the boot offering 564 litres capacity with the seats up or 1353 litres when they are down. And that is despite a full sized spare tucked under the boot floor. “Charges Apply”

Economy and emissions are also impressive though there is a fair variation between models. The 1.7 diesel claims 54.3 mpg but that drops quickly to 40.9 in the 2.0 CRDi. Still good economy, though, for such a big car! Prices start at £16,670 so that is also an attractive financial perk. Overall there’s a lot to enjoy with this new model, especially as it offers excellent value for money. And since it is included in Kia’s terrific 7 year / 100,000 mile warranty offer you can expect to have every confidence in your purchase. Local Answer - February 2014 | PAGE 13

Humour Sod It - Let's Just Offend Everyone!

P

erhaps the saddest part of all this Politically Correct stuff is that some of the jokes we used to tell have been relegated to the realms of 'offensive.' But when you really examine some of the pearls we've picked out there is surely no offence intended and they represent off the cuff humour at its best. As we always say, if we offend anyone we're sorry but we can't imagine anyone we know feeling uncomfortable with these. See what you think. I came out of the chip shop with a meat & potato pie, large chips, mushy peas and a jumbo sausage. A poor homeless man sitting there, said, “I've not eaten for two days.” I told him, “Hell, I wish I had your willpower!” A fat girl served me in McDonald's at lunch time today. She said, “Sorry about the wait.” I said, “Don't worry pet, you might lose it eventually.” I walked past a really spotty kid sitting at a bus stop as I went into the bank. When I came out, he looked at me and said, “Any change?” I said, “No, you're still spotty.” Years ago, it was suggested that an apple a day kept the doctor away, but since all the doctors are now Muslims, I've found that a bacon sandwich works much better ! Japanese scientists have created a camera with such an immensely fast shutter-speed that it is now possible to take a photograph of a woman with her mouth shut. I hate all this terrorist business. I used to love the days when you could look at an unattended bag on a train or a bus, and think to yourself, "I'm gonna have that!" A man in a hot air balloon was lost over Ireland. He looked down and saw a farmer in the fields and shouted down to him, “Where am I ?” The Irish farmer looked back up and shouted back, "You can't fool me. You're in that basket up there." I thought I had the pub quiz in the bag until the very last question, which I got wrong. The question was, "Where do women have the curliest hair ?" Apparently the correct answer was Fiji. A woman had a medical at the doctors. “You are grossly overweight,” he said. “I want a second opinion,” she exclaimed. "OK, I think you're ugly as well.” That should more or less cover it all ......

Forking over not only helps prepare the soil for spring, it helps reduce pests by exposing them to hungry birds and help drainage of rain water. Although temperatures should start to rise this month, after the snow and cold snap last month, there is still a risk of frost and even more snow. Protect vulnerable plants, pots and taps from frost by wrapping insulation such as garden and containers & pots are raised off the ground if possible. Fruit trees and shrubs will thank you for a generous application of dry mulch to protect their roots from freezing conditions. Once the ground isn’t frozen, make new beds and borders - mark the shape with sand trickled from a bottle, remove the top layer of growing vegetation and dig the ground over, again incorporating as much organic matter as possible. If you are making a bed in PAGE 18 | Local Answer - Issue 47

the lawn, remove the turf and stack it upside down somewhere out of the way - after a year or two it will rot down into fantastic compost. Alternatively chop it up and bury upside down in the planting hole a good spade’s depth down. Beware - if you just dig it in the buried grass will regrow and regrow and regrow.

Remember not to let leaves accumulate around alpines - they will die if left damp for long. Cover bare patches around clumps with gritty compost to encourage regrowth. When the weather allows, carry on clearing paths, check walls (but avoid concreting until there is no chance of frost), clean and insulate greenhouses and ensure heaters are working

LOCAL ANSWER properly. Even a little insulation will make a huge difference to your heating bill. Clean and repair your garden tools, book the lawn mower in for a service and check garden furniture for any rot. When it is warm enough, treat sheds, fences and trellis with wood preservative; brushes and rollers are fine for most things, however a sprayer is well worth buying for tricky projects such as woven panels!

WILD BIRDS

Putt out fresh water and food for wild birds is really important, especially on cold days. Buy good quality bird food or fat/suet balls and check that water is not frozen.

LAWNS

Keep off the lawn as much as possible whilst it is still wet - damage to waterlogged lawns is easily inflicted. If, towards the end of the month, the weather turns dry and mild, the lawn is firm and the grass is starting to look a little shaggy, give it a very gentle mow with the blades on the highest setting - don’t be tempted if conditions are wet! Also, if you are planning a new lawn, now is probably the earliest you could start preparing the ground for seeding or laying turf. In the garden BULBS, FLOWERS AND CONTAINERS

Brighten up a dull month with pansies, violas, primroses and heathers - pansies densely packed make for a truly striking display. Once the ground is less sodden plant pots of flowering spring bulbs and primroses in empty gaps - a bit of a cheat, but who cares!

Pot up lily bulbs to flower in early summer in barely moist compost and keep somewhere light and frost free. Only increase watering if the compost dries out or you see shoots appear above the surface; lily bulbs rot easily in overly wet conditions. Bring dahlias out of hibernation and pot them in compost singly or dormitory style in a tray! Keep them somewhere light and frost free. Sow sweet peas under a cloche or in the greenhouse for a cheery reminder that spring is on the way.

Hellebores - or Lenten roses - in their many lovely colours will be opening from now on well into the spring. Trim off their old leaves, both to display the flowers better and to prevent the spread of disease. Fresh new leaves will emerge in the spring.

Buy and plant container-grown snowdrops - add some compost to the soil plus a sprinkling of bonemeal and plant them slightly deeper than they were in the pot.

Hostas - although there is no sign of these above ground yet it is not too early by the middle of the month to water liquid slug killer around them to deal with the pests which are down there waiting for spring.

A Wonderful Attribute In A Woman!

W

e recently came across this lovely piece by CBS commentator Andy Rooney on women over 40 and felt that both male and female readers would appreciate it. If anyone is offended, however, we apologise but really think you should get a life! Andy began with the legend "As I grow in age, I value women over 40 most of all. Here are just a few reasons why." A woman over 40 will never wake you in the middle of the night and ask, 'What are you thinking?' She doesn't really give a damn what you think. If a woman over 40 doesn't want to watch the game, she doesn't sit around whining about it. She does something she wants to do, and it's usually much more interesting. Women over 40 are dignified so they seldom have a screaming match with you in an expensive restaurant. Bear in mind, however, that they won't hesitate to have you shot if they think you deserve it and that they can get away with it. Older women are generous with praise however undeserved it may be. That's because they claim to know what it's like to be unappreciated. Women get psychic as they age. You never have to confess your sins to a woman over 40. She seems to know them already. PAGE 24 | Local Answer - Issue 47

Once you get past a wrinkle or two, a woman over 40 is far sexier than her younger counterpart. Older women are forthright and honest. They'll tell you right off that you're a pillock when you're acting like one. You don't ever have to wonder where you stand with her. While we praise women over 40 for a multitude of reasons it could never be reciprocal. For every stunning, smart, wellcoiffed, hot woman over 40, there is a bald, paunchy relic in yellow pants making a fool of himself with some 22-year old waitress. Finally ladies may I apologize for all those men who say, 'Why buy the cow when you can get the milk for free?' Here's an update for you. Nowadays 80% of women are against marriage. Why? Because women realize it's not worth buying an entire pig just to get a little sausage! Sorry guys, but it's all true and we love it! And finally, the evidence. Who wouldn't appreciate this well over forty year old who is about to take on the biggest physical challenge of her life this February for Sport Relief 2014. Aptly named the BT Sport Relief Challenge Davina McCall will attempt to cycle, swim and run over 500 punishing miles from Edinburgh to London in just seven days. The 46-year-old plans to swim in a freezingcold open water lake and scale tortuous mountains before running a grueling marathon into London. Phew!

Recipe

S

hrove Tuesday is the day before the beginning of lent (Ash Wednesday) and the traditional way is to celebrate it is to eat lots of lovely pancakes. Normally you would eat them with a topping of golden syrup, maple syrup or simply lemon and sugar but whichever way you do it they make a simple and delicious meal. This year, however, we thought we'd try and get you all to branch out a little and turn the humble pancake into that most scrumptious French delicacy

Crêpes Suzette.

Here's how you do it! Preparation time 15 minutes. Cooking Time 35 minutes Serves 4 - 6 Ingredients • A batch of 12 standard pancakes (recipe below) • 3 tablespoons of caster sugar • 250ml freshly squeezed orange juice (2-3 oranges) • zest of 1 orange • 1 teaspoon of lemon juice • 1 tablespoon of Grand Marnier or Cointreau • 50g of unsalted butter First you have to make the pancakes.... To make a batch of pancakes you'll need: 110g/4oz plain flour, sifted; a pinch of salt; 2 eggs; 200ml/7fl oz milk mixed with 75ml/3fl oz water; 50g/2oz butter Preparation method; Sift the flour and salt into a large mixing bowl, make a well in the centre of the flour and break the eggs into it. Then whisk, gradually adding small quantities of the milk and water mixture until you have a smooth batter. Use the butter to lubricate the pan, get it very hot then turn the heat down to medium and, to start with, do a test pancake to see if you're using the correct amount of batter. (2 tablespoons is usually perfect). v As soon as the batter hits the hot pan tip it around from side to side to get the base evenly coated with batter. It should take only half a minute or so to cook; you can lift the edge with a palette knife to see if it's tinged gold as it should be. Flip the pancake over with a pan slice or palette knife - the other side will need a few seconds only - then simply slide it out of the pan onto a plate. Finally, fold all your pancakes into quarters. Now for the Suzette: 1. Tip the caster sugar into a non-stick frying pan and set the pan over a low-medium heat. Allow the sugar to melt slowly without stirring and continue to cook until it becomes a deep amber-coloured caramel. 2. Immediately slide the pan off the heat and add the orange juice – be careful as it may splatter and spit as it hits the hot caramel. Add the orange zest, lemon juice, the Grand Marnier and return the pan to a low heat to re-melt the caramel into the liquid. 3. Add the butter to the sauce in small pieces, bring to the boil and simmer gently until glossy and reduced slightly. Add the pancakes to the pan and warm through. Serve immediately. Sport What A Difference A Few Weeks Make!

I

n my January comments on ‘Boro I suggested that things aren’t as bad as they have sometimes looked and if some of the silly defensive errors could be addressed in the second half of the season we could still mount a challenge for the play-offs. I also said it’s amazing what a few consecutive wins can do to the league table. When that was written we were fourteen points below a play-off place. Fast forward three or four weeks and things are not only different, they are unrecognisable. Those ‘few consecutive wins’ have emerged and we are looking a completely different team. The reason can only be Aitor Karanka and the popular media stories that we have Jose Marinho to thank for his recruitment is debatable because what is very clear is that he was Steve Gibson’s choice. Whatever Jose’s supposed influence has been is negated by the fact that Gibson chose him before any conversations took place.

And while his initial introduction to the Championship wasn’t particularly impressive he obviously had to see what it was all about. He did that very quickly and the last few weeks have been tremendous. From the miserable performances of August to November ‘Boro have suddenly produced the kind of form that makes you think we are very close to being invincible. At the time of writing we are looking at six games, five wins, one unlucky draw that should have been a win but for an injury time equaliser and five clean sheets out of six. How many of even the most optimistic ‘Boro fans would have forecast that back in November? Next up is Leicester City (away) and sadly deadline dates mean I have no idea what happened. What I can say, however is that I’ll be having a few quid on a PAGE 28 | Local Answer - Issue 47

draw because I really think we can produce something against a side that has been a bit of a nemesis for us over the years.

So why have things changed so dramatically? Much of it has to do with the fact that we now have something of an established back four. I am loathe to criticise Tony Mowbray but he was inclined to make numerous changes based on who the opposition was. Karanka obviously doesn’t care and is determined to play what he believes is his best team regardless of who they’re playing. The fact that Jonathan Woodgate started and stayed on the bench against Charlton shows that he is loathe to change a winning team. That gives players confidence and knowing if they play well they’ll stay in the team makes them more determined to produce. OK, there are still question marks over the goal scoring department and it will be no disappointment if someone snaps up the likes of Lukas Jutkiewicz and Marvin Emnes in the window because they simply don’t look up to it. Nor, sadly, does Curtis Maine and if by the time you read this we’ve managed to offload one or two of them for money that will be a coup for Karanka. Where he is going to actually find a prolific striker is anyone’s guess because that is precisely what every team in the league is looking for so there is a little bit of competition. Given that we are on Teesside and not in one of the more socially acceptable cities in the UK is probably our biggest downfall. But his contribution so far has been exceptional and all we can do is hope he can continue the upward trend he’s begun. Who knows? By the time the next edition is delivered we might be in the play-offs and talking about the top two. But don’t get excited. This is ‘Boro and we could just as easily be back down there. It’s exciting though, isn’t it!
