The rise and rise of Saltburn Cliff Lift Saltburn's water based cliff lift has been extremely popular this year. The recently refurbished lift has not only been popular with the public on their trip to the Victorian seaside town but also from the media. The lift was featured in a television programme, entered into the world famous Guinness Book of Records and a two short documentaries recorded part of its history.

The lift, which was commissioned in 1884

by Henry Pease the founder of Saltburn, is the oldest funicular powered cliff lift in the world and carries passengers up and down from the beach to the top of the cliff. The refurbished carriages which have beautiful stained glass windows give a clear view of the coastline and travel on a track that is 207ft in length and goes to a height of 120ft. Since the lift reopened in April this year, over 110,000 visitors have travelled in this wonderful example of Victorian engineering.

This summer a Guinness Book of Records event took place in the lift. The record for the number of live interviews while travelling in a water powered lift was set at 114 by Alex Lewczuk, presenter for Southside Radio, based at James Cook Hospital in Middlesbrough. Alex set this record with the help of residents, visitors and local business people and has earned a place in famous Guinness Book of Records.

Reef TV is to feature the lift in a BBC2 programme presented by John Sergeant on the works of Frances Frith, the pioneer Victorian photographer. The recording took place in early October and should be on our screens around February 2012.

The recent refurbishment of the lift has also been featured in two short films '55 Seconds' and '150' by Jan Cawood of Tinn

Mann Films. The first documentary, '55 Seconds' is the time it takes to travel on the lift and features views and comments from travellers. The second film follows the restoration of the carriages, by Stanegate Restorations of Haltwhistle in time for Saltburn's 150th Anniversary.

A True Christmas Story You may already know this story, but we think it’s worth re-telling. It conveys a valuable message; No matter how tough things are, don't give up. You just don't know what lies around the corner.....!

Robert May was a small baby born in the early part of the nineteen hundreds and only ever reached around five feet tall. That meant he was bullied at school and even as he grew up he was often mistaken for someone’s little brother. When he left college he became employed as a copywriter with Chicago mail order house Montgomery Ward. He eventually married, had a daughter and then tragedy struck. When his daughter was only two his wife became ill and bedridden. Nearly everything he earned went on medication and doctor’s bills.

Money was short and life was hard.

One evening his four-year-old daughter climbed onto his knee and asked, “Daddy, why isn’t Mummy like everybody else’s mummy?” It was a simple question, asked with childlike curiosity but it struck a personal chord with Robert May. He had often asked the same question about his lack of height and to try and relieve the awkwardness of the moment he began to tell his daughter a story. It was about someone else who was different, ridiculed, humiliated and excluded because of the difference. Bob told the story in a humorous way, making it up as he went along as many fathers do.

His daughter laughed and clapped as the misfit finally triumphed at the end.

She then made him start all over again from the beginning and every night after that he had to repeat the story before she would go to sleep.

Because he had no money for fancy presents, Robert decided that he would put the story into book form. He had some artistic talent so he turned the story into a poem and illustrated it to

create his daughter’s Christmas present.

On the night before Christmas Eve he attended his office Christmas Party and took the poem to show to a colleague.

The colleague was impressed and insisted that Robert read his poem aloud to everyone at the party. Somewhat embarrassed by the attention, he took the small hand written volume from his pocket and began to read. At first the noisy group listened in laughter and amusement. But then became silent and after he finished, they broke into spontaneous applause. Later, and feeling quite pleased with himself, he went home, wrapped the book in Christmas wrapping and placed it under the modest Christmas tree. To say that his daughter was pleased with her present would be an understatement. She loved it!

When Robert returned to work he was summoned to the office of his head of department. He had heard about Bob’s poem and told him that Marketing were looking for a promotional tool and wondered if Robert would be interested in having his poem published. The following year, 1939, printed copies of the book were given to every child who visited the department stores of Montgomery Ward and it eventually became an international best seller, making Robert a rich man. His wife had unfortunately died during this time, but he was able to move from the small apartment and buy a big house. He was at last able to provide handsomely for his growing daughter.

The story is not quite over. In 1947, songwriter Johnny Marks used the theme of Robert’s poem for a song. He showed the song to a famous film star of the day, Gene Autry - ‘The Singing Cowboy’. Autry recorded the song and it became a world-wide number one hit.

You may just remember it. The first line goes....”Rudolph The Red-Nosed Reindeer had a very shiny nose.....!”

Helping tackle fire risk in the countryside Prisoners on Teesside have been paying something back into the community by making it more difficult for fires to spread at a local beauty spot.

Six low-risk inmates from Kirklevington Grange Prison near Yarm have spent four weeks in a supervised project to make fire breaks in the Eston Hills.

They have created more than a dozen large fire breaks by clearing areas in the gorse and saplings.

The initiative was a partnership between Cleveland Fire Brigade, the prison, Redcar & Cleveland Council’s Greater Eston Neighbourhood Management Team and Cleveland Police.

Neil Roberts, Cleveland Fire Brigade’s Community

Liaison Officer, said: “This is the first time we have undertaken a project like this with local inmates and the Eston Hills were chosen for the project because it is one of the Teesside areas which has been prone to fires – accidental or otherwise - in recent years.

“The gorse bushes play a particular part in that because they burn vigorously, even when wet.

“The inmates worked with their supervisors to remove the gorse bushes along the tree-line and also to cut a number of 3-4 metre wide firebreaks at other strategic points within the gorse.

“We are very pleased with the way the project went and we will be looking to carry out similar schemes in the area next year, including during Easter

and the summer holidays.

“It has had a double benefit – it has helped to protect the countryside and has encouraged the prisoners to develop a sense of their responsibility to society.”

Councillor Steven Goldswain, Redcar & Cleveland Council’s Cabinet Member for Community Protection, added: “We are delighted that we could assist Cleveland Fire Brigade and the prison with this community initiative that also benefits the environment.

“They have made a major contribution to preventing fires on the hills and we look forward to working together with them in the future.”

Residential Care Home - Who Controls the Choice?

Few people choose to leave their own home and move into residential care in later life. More often the decision is thrust upon them by a turn of events beyond their control.

A serious fall or a stroke results in admission to hospital, the patient fails to recover sufficiently to return home, the hospital needs to free up the bed, and so discharge to a residential or nursing home becomes inevitable.

Who is responsible for choosing the care home?

The primary duty for providing care for those in need rests with the Local Authority Social Services. If the patient is able to visit local care homes to make the decision for themselves their choice will prevail, provided the selected home has the facilities to meet their care needs.

If close family are on hand Social Services may leave the choice of care home to

them. However, many elderly people have no immediate family or their children are not close by or abroad.

So what happens then? Quite simply a well-intentioned stranger from Social Services will take charge and find the first available place in their area. Once made, their decision can be difficult to change without causing distress to the resident, their family and friends.

You can keep CONTROL by making a Lasting Power of Attorney for Health and Welfare in advance. The LPA allows YOU to choose who will make decisions on your behalf concerning where you live if care needs arise and to set out your wishes and feelings for them to follow.

 If you’re feeling energetic get out and do a bit of digging. Start a programme of

conditioning and improving your soil. To do this successfully you need first to find out what sort of soil you’ve got, whether it’s acid, neutral or alkaline, whether it’s sandy, peaty, stony, loamy or sticky with clay. If you’re new to gardening ask your neighbours. Buy a soil testing kit – this will measure the acidity of your soil. Any soil will benefit from having organic matter added so while you’re digging add plenty OF Westland ’ s Farm Manure.  As long as the weather remains dry you can continue planting evergreens.  Clear up any fallen leaves and cut back perennials if you haven’t already done so curl up in front of the fire with lots of colourful catalogues to give you lots of ideas for next year.

 Clean your lawn mower. When spring comes you’ll be glad you did.  Never allow leaves to build up on lawns as they will cause disease.

Middlesbrough definitely has talent!

Having wowed the judges with her original audition singing a fantastic version of Beverly Knight's "A Piece of My Heart" Amelia Lily, the 16 year old singer from Middlesbrough, was unceremoniously dumped from the show without even a public vote.

Considerable protest from people in the know who felt she should have been kept on followed but she really must have thought that that was the end of her X Factor ambitions. Now, however, in a rollercoaster couple of weeks she has been recalled to the show after winning a sing-off between herself and three other previous contestants 2 Shoes, James Michael and Jonjo Kerr to replace the disgraced Frankie Cocozza. She won the public vote in the sing-off with a great version of Queen's storming classic ‘The Show Must Go On.’ More drama was to come in the following week as she was initially in the bottom two but was voted through to beat previous favourite Craig Colton, though the joy of that win was somewhat tempered by the fact that he was one of her best friends on the show. Amelia said afterwards that she was 'absolutely devastated' following the departure of Craig, describing singing for survival against her friend as ‘the worst thing she's ever had to do in her life. ‘ It left Gary Barlow to place all his hopes of winning the X Factor 2011 crown with remaining act Marcus Collins, while fellow judge Tulisa described the singoff between Amelia and Craig as ‘the hardest of the competition so far.’

And just to demonstrate that winning the X Factor is never straightforward Amelia has also had to cope with rumours that fellow contestants were angry that she had been readmitted and felt it gave her an unfair advantage.

While girls’ mentor Kelly Rowland was overjoyed after Amelia was reinstated as a contestant, rival girl Misha B and Gary Barlow’s act Marcus Collins were reportedly furious at the twist and were both said to have thrown tantrums after hearing an act would be returning to the competition. To clear it up, however, Marcus said when questioned that in actual fact Amelia was ‘welcomed back with open arms,’ so everything finally seems to be coming right for the ‘Boro lass. With early deadlines beckoning we have no idea what will happen this week but her performances so far have clearly been excellent so there is a strong possibility we may see a Middlesbrough girl win the X Factor.

A Fragrant Centrepiece for the Christmas Dinner Table.

Some of the loveliest Christmas accessories can be created both cheaply and easily and this is a typical way to achieve a real feel of Christmas. Let the scent of a true Yuletide fill your home with this wonderful arrangement of aromatic herbs, beautiful flowers and fragrant spices.

All you’ll need are: Cinnamon sticks: a circular glass vase: Elastic band or string: a phlox plant: ribbon: a selection of greenery and berries that can be picked by the roadside: rosemary sprigs: white roses: florist’s wire and star anise.

Method: 1. Attach the cinnamon sticks around the vase with elastic or string. Fill the vase with water.

2. Carefully cut stems of phlox plant and place in vase. Add ribbon to vase to hide the string.

3. Add greenery and berries, making sure taller stems are at the back. Add white roses – trim stems if needed.

4. Thread florist’s wire with star anise at intervals and gently place over the arrangement.

Make your own gorgeous rum truffles this Christmas They’re one of those treats you allow yourself at Christmas and literally everyone love rum truffles, so how much better would you feel when you hand them out at your party if you could say you’d actually made them, yourself? It’s easy and here’s how!

Preparation time: 20 minutes + 1 hour refrigeration Total cooking time: 1 minute Makes 25 Ingredients • 200gms dark cooking chocolate • 60ml cream • 30gms butter • 50gms chocolate cake crumbs • 2 teaspoons dark rum, brandy or whisky • 100gms dark cocoa powder Method Put the chocolate in a heatproof bowl. Put cream and butter in a small pan, then heat and mix until the butter starts to melt and the mixture is just boiling. Pour the hot mixture onto the chocolate. Mix until the chocolate melts and the texture is smooth. Add the rum and cake crumbs and mix altogether. Put in the fridge for 20 minutes then take out, roll into a slab and cut into 25 pieces, Roll each into a ball.

On a sheet of baking paper, spread the dark cocoa powder and roll each ball in it until coated.

Line the truffles on a foil lined tray. Refrigerate for 40 minutes.

Can be kept in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 1 week.

In my house the Christmas tree has always been my wife’s domain but having been introduced to this perfect man’s tree I’m now not so sure. This one was actually put together with superglue and it’s a bit difficult to see how it will come apart very easily but the most important aspect of it is to follow the one vital rule. Let’s hope we’re not looking at what might have been!

My earliest recollections of being a Middlesbrough fan include wonderful memories of that most prolific goal scoring partnership of Brian Clough and Alan Peacock, and with Clough’s personal tally exceeding 40 goals on no fewer than four consecutive seasons he was something of a machine. As a man, however, his selfish attitude and downright obstinacy made him somewhat unpopular with his teammates and ultimately led to one of his constant transfer requests being granted and him joining arch rivals Sunderland for a then record fee.

Sadly, Scott McDonald is not in the same goal-scoring league as Cloughy. even though he has contributed significantly on the score sheet since signing from Celtic.

It is instead his attitude that is more reminiscent of the young Clough. Hoofing the ball at Barry Robson while his back was turned following an altercation between the two in the Blackpool game was not a particularly nice sight for Boro fans. Nor is his rapidly growing reputation of being a bit of a moaner something we want to hear. Granted, his popping up with three goals in two games at the time of writing has been a welcome sight for Boro fans and I can fully understand his frustration at being removed from the game before the end while sitting on two goals but a player who visibly demonstrates irritation with teammates while ignoring his own shortcomings is too reminiscent of the old Clough for comfort. The real truth about the Blackpool game is that by the time he was taken off he should have been sitting on at least a hat trick. It’s safe to say that given the same opportunities McDonald had enjoyed the young Clough would probably have had four! Going a little bit further back it’s also true that the goal scoring opportunities with which McDonald has been presented over the

early part of this season could – and should – have led to at least five more goals and probably four or five more points. At the end of the season that could be significant and it’s to be hoped we are not left regretting what might have been.

That Tony Mowbray has stuck with him throughout the drought, repeating on a number of occasions that he still believed McDonald would end up our top scorer at the end of the season can be construed as good management since he’s now started to score again. But perhaps it could also be a case of regardless of how much Tony Mowbray believes in him he nevertheless has very little alternative. Alex Nimely has yet to figure on the score sheet despite a number of run-outs and in truth has never really looked like scoring. Mowbray obviously doesn’t rate Tarmo Kink as his chances this season have been nonexistent. Curtis Main and Luke Williams are obviously not doing it in the reserves or perhaps they would have been given an opportunity while Mowbray was quick to point out when he signed Bart Ogbeche that ‘we have not signed Lionel Messi.’

So it will be left to McDonald and Emnes until at least January because regardless of who becomes available in the transfer window there is still very little money available and literally every team in the country is looking for a player who can consistently put the ball in the net.

So like it or not we are going to have to put up with McDonald’s tantrums and hope that getting into a goal scoring groove will lift his spirits and improve his demeanor. It’s probably going to be our only chance of turning the potential of our current third place into the desired promotion push.
