The Larchfield Centre is working with Middlesbrough College to enhance training facilities and to be the awarding body.
A comment made by Stephen Mcgechan, one of the community members, now involved in making things better for people with learning disabilities where they live.
Their success is evident when you visit the centre, and they continue with their vision of providing the best chance possible for their members to integrate and be encouraged to use their own individual strengths.
The Larchfield centre is currently establishing a working partnership with Middlesbrough College to facilitate the whole of Middlesbrough's learning disabled to be able to access training, via the college, in the community. Each disabled person will be assed for enterprise training and work experience. Middlesbrough College will have access to the community and all its facilities, workshops, bakery and farming, and the community will then have access to classroom facilities for basic skills and enterprise exams.

Recent statistics show that there is an increasing likelihood that 1 in 4 people aged 16 today will reach their 100th birthday. The rapidly ageing population suggests that there will be over 500,000 people aged over 100 in the next halfcentury. So we all have to ask ourselves about our comfort in later life –
what about the costs of care if you get too frail to look after yourself? How can I afford to live to be 100? Funding the costs of a care home can run into thousands of pounds a month. Averagely fees vary from around £400 a week to £1,000. And you will have to pay those fees if your capital exceeds £23,250 – not that unusual these days. Inheritance Tax (death duty as it was once known) is payable when a person’s total estate exceeds £325,000 (2011/12). The current
tax rate is 40%, but only on the excess over this threshold. Whereas inheritance tax used to be regarded as the rich man’s tax, funding for care is very much an everyman’s tax, affecting every homeowner needing care in later life and with such a low capital limit, it is something that will affect us all. Ju-jutsu Classes Now In Eaglescliffe After successfully launching Ju-jutsu classes in Brotton, Mark Paterson has since expanded his classes into Eaglescliffe. Public classes in Aiki-jiyu-jutsu (for Teenagers & adults) and Little Samurai (a non violent form of Aiki-jiyu-jutsu for very young children) are held in Eaglescliffe Village Hall on a Tuesday and Sunday Evening. Mark Paterson has been a martial artist since the early 80’s when he lived in the Far East with his parents as his father worked for the UN. In 2005 Mark attained the grade of 8th dan Shihan (Master instructor) in Aiki-jiyu-jutsu, which was the unarmed combat system used by high level Samurai for over a thousand years and was a combat system without equal.
Over the years Mark has been awarded black belts in many Mark Paterson other styles such as Aikido, Taekwondo, Hapkido and Battojutsu. He also holds grades and has extensive experience in Brazilian Ju-jitsu, Dim-mak (pressure point fighting) and is expert in the use of and defence against weapons likeknives, swords, baseball bats, sticks of all kinds, firearms and improvised weapons, i.e. key’s, pens, torches, cables, magazines and items of clothing. Mark was born with an eye condition known as Macular Dystrophy which has left him with around 5% of normal vision and highly light sensitive and so is registered blind. None of Mark’s former instructors ever gave him an easy time because of his eyesight and Mark thinks this has been a major factor in him obtaining the grades and level of skill he has. Mark has developed his own style of Aiki-jiyu-jutsu incorporating techniques from the other combat systems he has trained in and teaching it in a way that makes it very effective for self-defence in the modern world. It can be used by anybody regardless of age or gender and does not require a high level of strength or fitness. It is also easily adaptable for use by people with physical disabilities, as Mark himself has proved. He thinks that Aiki-jiyu-jutsu is the ultimate mixed martial art! Mark also takes private students for training in Aiki-jiyu-jutsu or for self-defence, for details see ad on page 13.

Christmas comes early for Teesside When the former Corus site in Redcar was forced to close down with the loss of 1,600 jobs it looked like the end of an era for the area. But after an enormous amount of work from many dedicated people a saviour was found and Thai firm Sahaviriya Steel Industries (SSI) finally agreed to buy the Teesside Cast Products plant in March this year. The Company now anticipates that the old blast furnace should be ready to be fired up again in December, bringing major steel production back to East Cleveland. On completing the purchase seven months ago Win Viriyaprapaikit, SSI's president, said the signing of the deal was a "historic and wonderful day. We are very excited to be here, to be part of this. I think it is a wonderful place. We want to ensure that the 170 year heritage of steel making continues and we will put plans in place so that younger people can learn from this experience and carry on as the next generation of steel makers." It certainly was a ‘historic and wonderful
day,’ but the huge recruitment campaign that has seen almost 10,000 people apply for 1,000 new jobs at the revamped facility has ensured that even greater days are imminent for the successful applicants. For some, those great days have already begun as the first hundred have now begun their induction ready for the anticipated start of production on the eighth of December. A company spokesman said some of the new starters were ex-steelworkers who had been employed at the plant, formerly owned by Tata Steel when it was forced to close. For many, of course, there has been disappointment, but for the successful ones Christmas has most certainly come early and we wish them all well. Let us hope this new collaboration between Teesside and Thailand means that these new careers last long into the future. Steelmaking, after all, belongs on Teesside!

Are we good or is everybody else a bit poor? Statistics could suggest that this must be a poor Championship season when only two wins from seven home games could see us in such an exalted position. I’m not so sure, though, because there are some very strong teams around us and in many cases they are nullifying each other’s talent with a considerable number of draws throughout the league making a win even more effective than normal. Had we lost against Derby, for instance, we could have dropped four places instead of being second. That could well have been the case, of course, because Derby hit the woodwork on four occasions and Jason Steele had possibly his best game ever with four wonderful one-handed saves. Conversely, we have hit the woodwork five times in the last three games so it’s about time we had a bit of luck. But when you look at the other teams in the league that, although currently hovering just below us, have obvious potential we must be doing something right. West Ham hardly lost anybody from its Premiership squad when relegated so the experience and obvious class in their ranks should make them real contenders. Leeds, with big gates and some expensive buys are starting to look very dangerous. Southampton’s first season has continued in the same style that brought promotion last year and Ipswich, Leicester and Derby have all proved in their recent visits to the Riverside that they are very capable indeed. All of which confirms the fantastic job Tony Mowbray has done for us since his arrival. Although having to slash the wage bill he managed to get rid of a number of highly paid players yet it’s now difficult to remember who they were and what advantage they ever gave us. He selected well, managing to retain the services of players with real class and enormous potential. Matthew Bates, Rhys Williams, Marvin Emnes and Joe Bennett are all comparatively young players who are now providing the backbone of the success we’re enjoying. Yet with each of these players he was able to fend off strong interest and substantial offers from the Premiership, confirming has claims throughout the close season that he ‘didn’t have to sell anybody he wanted to keep.’ We’re rapidly approaching Christmas and if we can keep things going as we are at the moment then it should be a very exciting second half to the campaign.
