Real Life Self Defence Advertisers Anoucement

M

ark Paterson is the founder of Real Life Self-Defence, which he is currently teaching to the public, at the Galley Hill Leisure Centre in Guisborough, every Tuesday evening, as well as in private one to one training sessions in the local area.

Mark was born with a congenital eye condition known as Macular Dystrophy, which has left him with less than 5% of normal vision and highly light sensitive and so, is registered blind. In the early 80’s, Mark went to live in the Far East with his parents, when his father was posted out there, with the UN; while there, Mark began training in Aiki-Ju-Jutsu (the unarmed combat art of the samurai) and in Aikido. This started a love affair with traditional martial arts, which has endured for more than 30 years. Then, in 2005, Mark was awarded his 8th Dan Masters Degree and the title of shihan (master instructor).

Mark has also attained black belts in several different

martial arts, over the years.

Although a devoted student of traditional martial arts, Mark believes that a martial art should change and adapt to reflect the times and the kind of attack which is more likely to be faced in the modern world. If a martial art fails to adapt, it will fail when needed and becomes something antiquated and quaint, like Morris Dancing.

This is why Mark devised his own martial art AikiJiyu-Jutsu using traditional techniques adapted to be used against attacks one might face on the streets today, as well as utilising techniques taken from the various combat arts Mark has studied over the years.

Real Life SelfDefence(RLSD), is Mark’s latest venture and has taken several years, to cultivate.

Many self-defence styles exist, but seem to fall into two camps. One is, the military style system, which can work for self-defence, but require new students to be very fit and strong, or to be an experienced fighter, in the first place. The second is things like Tai-bo, or

boxersize, which claim to teach self-defence, while getting you fit. You can get fit at these classes, but the idea they will teach you effective self-defence, is simply ridiculous, not to mention dangerous!

Mark has designed Real Life Self-Defence, to be devastatingly effective, utilising Marks 30 year + of experience in martial arts, while at the same time, not requiring students to be super fit, or strong, as this would exclude most of the population. RLSD training is realistic, while being relaxed and fun and is open to everyone and no lycra, we train in everyday clothing.

This free initiative supports Guisborough’s traders to show the value of local shopping and its benefits for the local economy.
