BUSINESS MANAGER’S REPORT

Brothers and Sisters,

We are happy to have our members working hard this summer at worksites around the region. Some of our members are at South Station, moving that project forward with skill and expertise. Take a look at their efforts on pages 4 and 5.

At the end of the summer and later this fall, we have a very important job to do — beyond plaster, concrete, and fireproofing. We have a responsibility to go out and vote in our local and state elections and this year, the presidential election. Read more about the importance of supporting laborfriendly candidates on page 6.

In this issue, with National Recovery Month coming up shortly, we would like to provide information about recovery support.

Our union benefits exist to support you in health and wellness, retirement, and more. Read more about the Modern Assistance program on page 7. Please know that your union is here for you in recovery.

Thank you for your continued dedication to your trade. This union is stronger because of you.

In Solidarity,

WORKSITE SPOTLIGHT

South Station is getting a major upgrade and Local 534 is proud to contribute to the care of this historic building. The updates will provide easier access for riders utilizing both trains and buses in and out of the station. It will also include additional parking, office space, and retail space to turn South Station into a true transportation hub.

South Station was originally constructed in 1899 and is currently owned by the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA). Improvements to the station were made in the 1980s and 90s, but the current renovations will offer easy transfers and transportation options for the public. 125 years after its original construction, Local 534 is proud to contribute to the preservation of this iconic Boston landmark.

YOUR VOTE MATTERS

We have a responsibility to get out and vote for labor-friendly candidates in local, state, and national elections. In this year’s presidential election, there is only one choice for workers and their families. The Biden Administration has proven time and again, through their actions, that they support workers and share a common goal with those who want better wages, working conditions, and benefits for hardworking citizens.

During President Biden’s first term, he signed the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act into law and promoted Project Labor Agreements on the federal level. Both of these actions have had a direct impact on our work and our members. Many jobs are coming to the states we represent due to federal infrastructure

funding, and we will continue to win jobs because of our safety standards, skilled workers, and commitment to providing good wages and benefits.

President Biden is making critical gains for the labor movement and must remain in office to continue that great work. Be sure to get out and vote, and take a closer look at labor-friendly candidates in your local and state elections.

Many state primaries and local elections are yet to come, so be sure to stay on top of those dates!

State Elections and the Presidential Election will take place on November 5, 2024
