What Makes a Loan Platform GENUINE?

RBI/NBFC Registration

All legitimate lenders must be registered as Non-Banking Financial Companies (NBFCs) with the Reserve Bank of India. CIN number must be publicly visible.

Secure Data Handling

Only requests minimal KYC data (Aadhaar, PAN). Never asks for access to your contacts, gallery, SMS, or call logs.

Transparent Interest Rates

Interest rates clearly stated upfront typically 10%–36% p.a. No hidden processing fees or surprise deductions from disbursed amount.

Official Website & Contact

Has a verified website, physical office address, and reachable customer support. Registered email (not Gmail/Yahoo).

No Upfront Fees

Genuine apps NEVER ask you to pay a fee before disbursing the loan. Processing fees (if any) are deducted from the approved amount.

App Store Verified

Listed on official Play Store/App Store with the lending entity clearly identified. Thousands of authentic reviews. No sudden rebranding.

RBI's Digital Lending Guidelines

Digital Lending Framework

2022

• Loan disbursals MUST go directly to borrower's bank account not via third-party wallets

• Regulated Entities (REs) must maintain a list of all partner Loan Service Providers (LSPs)

• Interest rates & fees must be disclosed in Key Fact Statement (KFS) before loan execution 2023

Whitelist of DLAs

• RBI began building a positive registry of verified Digital Lending Apps (DLAs)

• Only apps linked to RBI-registered entities can legally offer credit products

• App stores required to verify lending app credentials before listing 2025

DLA Directory Goes Live

• MeitY launched public DLA directory on July 1, 2025

• All Regulated Entities must comply non-compliance leads to enforcement action

• State SITs (Telangana, AP, Karnataka) set up to prosecute fraudulent app operators

Red Flags How to Spot a Fake Loan App (Part 1)

Claims to be 'RBI Approved'

The RBI does NOT approve or license individual loan apps. Any app making this claim is misleading you. Verify the NBFC partner instead.

Excessive App Permissions

Demands access to your phone contacts, SMS, gallery, call logs, or location. Genuine lenders only need Aadhaar/PAN KYC. This data is later used for blackmail.

Too-Good-To-Be-True Offers

Promises instant 10,000–5 lakh with 0% interest, no documents, instant ₹₹ approval in 2 minutes with no credit check. These are traps to attract desperate borrowers.

Asks for Upfront Processing Fees

No legitimate lender demands money before releasing the loan. Scam apps collect fees and disappear or deduct huge amounts from a never-disbursed loan.

No NBFC Registration Number

The app/website hides or refuses to share their RBI-registered NBFC partner name & registration number. Check rbi.org.in to verify all NBFCs.

Generic/Suspicious Developer Details

Developer listed with a Gmail/Yahoo address, no physical office, recently registered domain (check WHOIS), or no verifiable business entity.

Red Flags How to Spot a Fake Loan App (Part 2)

Harassment for Repayment

Calls your family, colleagues, or friends from your stolen contacts. Sends morphed photos or threats. This is a criminal offense in India under IPC.

App Removed or Rebranded Frequently

App suddenly disappears from Play Store or reappears under a different name. This is a major red flag scammers evade authorities by constantly rebranding.

Instant Approval Without Verification

Approves loans in under 5 minutes without any CIBIL check, income verification, or video KYC. Legitimate lenders always do due diligence.

No Grievance Redressal

Cannot contact the company via email, phone, or address. No official RBI Complaint portal link. No Ombudsman details provided.

Unsecured Payment Methods

Asks for repayments via UPI to personal accounts, cash, or cryptocurrency instead of official bank transfers to a registered company account.

Poor/Fake Reviews

App has thousands of 5-star reviews but no genuine feedback. Reviews are repetitive, generic, or posted within days of launch signs of fake reviews.

Real Scam Examples from India

Loan App Network (2021–2024)

ED arrested hundreds involved in a scheme using fake Chinese-backed loan apps. These apps extorted users for advanced EMIs, blackmailed them using private photos, and used 400+ mule bank accounts to siphon 500+ crore. ₹

"Piyara Loan" & Clones (2023)

Multiple apps with identical backends but different names targeted Tier 2/3 cities in UP, Bihar, MP. Victims received 3,000 but were asked to repay 10,000+ within 7 days with threats to family members.

Fraudsters call victims posing as bank executives, promise loans up to 5 lakh, but demand ₹ 'processing/insurance fee' of 5,000–50,000 first. Money is collected and scammers vanish. Common in ₹₹ Rajasthan, Gujarat.

Agent Harassment (Andhra & Telangana)

State SITs busted call centers employing 200+ people who morphed contact photos into obscene images and mass-distributed them to shame borrowers into repaying inflated amounts. At least 20 suicides linked to this.
