Over the next half-centur y, the Hurst family and business would grow The dair y store would become a full grocer y store. Ice cream would lead to a restaurant and ice cream shop with a playground. Tours of the farm would evolve into an entire agritainment venture, called the Farmstead. Today, Oregon Dair y includes The Mar ket and Restaurant, Milkhouse Ice Cream Shop, a playground, and The Farmstead that hosts year-round events.

Confidence Starts with a Smile

Orthodontics is about more than fixing crooked teeth. For the doctors at smilebuilderz, it’s a unique combination of art, science and personal interaction that can not only improve smiles but transform lives.

The smilebuilderz orthodontic team includes Dr Silke Cummings, Dr Serban Nicolaescu and the newest member of the practice Dr Jonathan Shue.

A Penn Manor and Millersville University grad who also served five years as a general dentist in the U.S. Air Force, Dr Shue says he enjoys the complexity of his specialty.

“The orthodontic journey is about more than just straightening teeth,” he says “It’s also empowering people and setting up lives for hopefully the best future possible.”

And while some dental issues are straightforward problems with straightforward solutions, such as a filling for a cavity, the art of orthodontics is far from formulaic. It’s working with a medley of variables from facial balance to jaw position to the patient’s personality to craft a smile that’s unique to the individual.

That’s especially satisfying and fun when working with younger patients, says Dr Silke, who fell in love with orthodontics as a kid when she had the opportunity to shadow her own orthodontist as he treated others.

“I usually see my patients as they’re beginning their transition into adolescence,” she says “Some of the change I see is just born of the familiarity of seeing each other every month for a couple years, but I still love seeing them open up and smile more and share more of their lives with us.”

At smilebuilderz, Shue, Cummings and Nicolaescu are part of a larger dental team that integrates many specialties under one roof, including general dentists, periodontists, endodontists and pediatric specialists. What began with one dentist is now a practice that employs over 250 at four locations: a main campus off Oregon Pike and three primary-care offices in Ephrata, at Route 30 and Rohrerstown Road, and on Lititz Pike.

The unique practice model offers the best of both worlds: comprehensive care with a small-office feel. And it benefits both the practitioner and patient.

“If at any point in treatment I have a question about something outside my specialty I can collaborate with others in the office, I can refer and follow up, communication is easy and that just makes for a special comprehensive package,” Dr Shue says “You may not be seeing all the specialists at all times, but you have the expertise of all the specialists backing you.”

At the same time, patients still get the personalized attention that comes from seeing the same doctor and staff.

“For patients, I think that means the world,” Dr Shue says “They get continuity of care; they get to build the relationship and feel comfortable. If they have questions they’re talking to the person that’s been managing their care from start to finish. It’s pretty unique and cool.”

DID YOU KNOW?

Shopping in Lancaster not only means getting to see the same friendly faces each time you patronize a nearby business, it also means keeping money in your community. A 2018 study from American Express, the company that founded Small Business Saturday (which is celebrated the day after Black Friday), and the National Federation of Independent Business found that roughly twothirds of every dollar spent at a small business ultimately stays in the Lancaster community. That boils down to 67 cents out of every dollar.

Video Marketing with LNP Studios

Our in-house video marketing team is dedicated to bringing your visions to life, whether it’s through brand videos, TV commercials, short films, web videos, music videos or corporate presentations. We’re ready to shoot on location or in our state-of-the-art video studio in the heart of downtown Lancaster. We’ve also got certified drone pilots on our team who can shoot aerial videos or photos as well as professional, HD, multi-cam live streaming services to Facebook, YouTube or your custom RTMP And, naturally, our team also consists of talented photographers who can capture still images of your business, your team, or your products.

The American Independent Business Alliance also references the local multiplier regarding local spending. This occurs when people spend at a locally owned and independent business instead of chain stores or mega online retailers. Although the exact amount of dollars recirculated by locally owned businesses varies due to certain unique criteria, retail studies conducted by Civic Economics has found a person’s dollars at these locally owned businesses recirculate through the local economy two to four times more than money spent at non-local companies. This money helps generate more local wealth, charitable contributions and jobs.

Good to see you again, Lancaster! ain,

Stop in Framed by James, a recently opened optical shop at 301 E. Chestnut St., Lancaster, and you may end up with more than new eyewear. Owner Jim Albright will happily invite you to sit down for a glass of wine and some friendly conversation too all on the house, of course.“It’s like a neighborhood bar that sells glasses,” he quips. The boutique-style setting of Framed by James is far different from his former business, Albright Opticians, which his father opened in 1965 and where Albright worked for 55 years before selling it in 2022. His intention was to ride into the sunset of retirement, but he got bored after about two years. Framed by James is an opportunity for Albright, 74, to go back to doing something he loves but on a much smaller, more intimate scale

There are no eye exams and no additional employees. It’s just him, fitting people with attractive and affordable prescription eyewear.

Albright offers a nice selection of frames, including brands with styles and colors you may not find elsewhere in Lancaster County. Since opening in March, he’s been welcoming new customers by word of mouth, including a Philadelphia-based actress who admired someone’s glasses at a Prima Theatre after-party and found out they had gotten them at Framed by James

And he’s been reconnecting with old customers too.

“A lot of customers I had from the past are coming in and we are reacquainting ourselves and telling war stories about what happened over the last two years,” he says.

“It’s more fun than retirement.”

Framed by James is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays Other hours by appointment. For more information, visit framedbyjames.com or call 717-875-8812.

From Café Cabarets to Cultural Catalyst

Prima Theatre Marks 15 Years of Bold Joy — Led by Founding Executive Producer, Mitch Nugent

LANCASTER, PA What began as a cabaret in a café has become a cultural force. Prima Theatre, founded and led by Mitch Nugent, celebrates its 15th Anniversary Season with a lineup of bold performances designed to do one thing: crack open joy.

Fifteen years ago, Prima was just an idea scribbled on a napkin in Prince Street Café Mitch asked “What if a theatrical experience made you feel more alive?” That very café became the venue for Prima’s earliest cabarets intimate performances packed with talent from Broadway and regional theaters, where locals sipped lattes just feet from world-class artists. It was raw, unpolished, and electric. And it worked

In the years that followed, Prima became a nomadic company, performing in vintage car garages, historic warehouses, film studios anywhere art could thrive. The company staged immersive concerts, modern rock operas, and reinventions of beloved classics.

Then in 2018, Prima established a home in the former Hamilton Watch Company executive offices, transforming a stark industrial space into an intimate black box theater that now hosts thousands each year A building once devoted to precise timekeeping now pulses with bold performance and human connection.

All of it is rooted in Prima’s mission: to invigorate lives through fresh theatrical experiences. Whether it’s a soul-stirring concert, a boundary-breaking play, or a joy-filled evening with friends, every show is designed to spark something real to lift, to connect, and to wake us up to the wonder possible in our lives.

And the numbers tell the story. While regional theaters shutter at record rates with national attendance down 27%, according to the NEA Prima is growing. Under Mitch Nugent’s leadership, the theatre has seen 32% audience growth since 2019, draws audiences 25 years younger than the national average, and has generated over $146 million in local economic impact.

“Joy is a balloon. And life has pins. But we can refill it together.” Mitch Nugent, Founding Executive Producer
