Real Honey, Fake Money
HOPEWELL
BY CHAI GALLAHUN LNNUSA.comHOPEWELL— On Sunday, November 27th at 2:17pm, on an otherwise mild weekend ideal for the Shop Small and Support Local Businesses drive, two men entered Haley’s Honey Meadery in the downtown district of the Wonder City.
Ordinarily, two people making purchases at a downtown business would be considered a positive thing; but according to a social media post by Haley’s Honey Meadery, the two men bought products with a counterfeit $100 bill. The business’s surveillance footage shows the two individuals appearing to hand over the bill to the cashier who is bagging-up the items.

In the post, Haley’s Honey Meadery stated, “Once again Hopewell supports small businesses!!!” adding, “BEWARE of these two and fake money.”
They also published a warning about stealing, breaking and entering, or using fake money at any of their locations, stating, “We will prosecute you to the fullest and blast you on social media. Do not think you can come into our establishment and rob us from all the hard work we have put into building our dreams.”
Other business owners
have raised concerns about the rise in emboldened criminal activity nearby as well, even doing so in public in recent city council meetings and the recent crime summit held at the community center. The owners of

Time Capsule comic-book store, as well as City Point Ice Cream and Burgers shared their experiences involving homeless loiterers who bathe on the sidewalk and criminals breaking into cars on East Broadway in
broad daylight.
The meadery’s post stated that this was the second time that Haley’s has had issues at the Hopewell location, warning the Hopewell community, “Keep a lookout for these criminals.”
Procedure Trumps Paint
PETERSBURG
BY CRAIG RICHARDS LNNUSA.comPETERSBURG– Local art enthusiasts recently painted a rosy picture for another mural in Old Towne; but a special meeting of the Architectural Review Board, held on Wednesday, December 7th, put the future of the potential new mural on hold when the board voted to postpone the approval of the project.
While the mural on the corner of Bank Street and Sycamore Street sailed through the approval process last time, this second attempt to bring a wall mural to downtown came up against stiff opposition. But the ARB delay was exactly that, a delay. Board member Terry Ammons questioned the board’s authority to ap-

prove the project and, more importantly, the lack of clear procedures for the approval of public art installations related to the ARB’s authority. Eventually, Ammons made a motion to revisit the request at the ARB’s January meeting, giving board members time to review their specific role in relation
to public art projects and the board’s duty to uphold the integrity of the historic district.
For now, the board indi-

cated that they intend on establishing ARB guidelines for choosing appropriate walls to pre-approve for murals while encouraging City Council to establish an art commission that would determine appropriate subject matter for artist renderings. For now the project was neither approved nor denied as the board will reconvene after the holiday in an effort to formalize their procedures regarding art projects in the historic district and await council’s direction on a way to approve the art itself – effectively creating a two-step approval procedure on projects going forward.

Hopewell Crime Summit: Citizens Fed Up with Continued Crime
HOPEWELL BY CHAI GALLAHUN LNNUSA.comHOPEWELL- In an effort to address concerned residents, Hopewell officials held a Special Neighborhood Crime Summit Meeting on Wednesday, November 30th at the community center to discuss crime.
Attending the meeting was most of Hopewell’s city council: Mayor Bennett, Vice Mayor Partin, and Councilors Gore, Pelham and Randolph. Representatives from various local, state and federal agencies included Hopewell Sheriff Travis Stanley, HPD Deputy Chief Major Donald Reid and Captain David Stoker, Petersburg Police Chief Travis Christian, ATF Special Agent Justin Jacob, and officers representing Virginia State Police.
After Starke and other law enforcement representatives provided an overview of current efforts and initiatives being undertaken to address the flood of crime in the city (see last week’s edition of the LNN Insider), residents were invited to address the law enforcement panel.
The first person to address the panel was a female resident who stated that, while it is important for people to see police taking action in
public, she also felt it important to see the results of their action. She stated, “Every day, it’s more gunshots, more violence, more drugs in the schools, especially the elementary schools.”
Continuing, she said, “Unless we see the change, we feel like nothing is being done. If something were being done, we wouldn’t have to be here… We feel like you guys don’t care enough.”
In response, Chief Starke said, “We are doing everything we can… And, it doesn’t happen overnight.” He added that he and his department need to make sure they “close the loop” with citizens about sharing follow-up information after sirens and/or gunshots are heard.
Another attendee remarked about police arresting suspects who are quickly released back onto the streets. The chief replied, “It’s frustrating when we make an arrest, and we do our job, but yet we still deal with the same offenders over and over.” He described how HPD officers have come to know criminals by name, even being able to cite from memory their personal arrest records. Explaining that repeat offenders being back on the streets was “outside the scope of what we do”,
he emphasized that law enforcement needs support from judges, commonwealth attorneys, and legislators. “Twenty-three thousand residents in the City of Hopewell, and we’re really here tonight because of a very small number of people that is creating havoc for our community,” said Starke. “That is unacceptable. It is a very small number of people that is creating these crimes, but they are causing fear throughout the community.” Starke stated that law enforcement makes the arrests, but that the criminals are released in a very quick manner. “We’re not pleased with that either,” he assured the audience.
In addition to the quick turn-around time for criminals being set free, residents expressed frustration with a lack of prosecution from the city’s commonwealth attorney (who did not attend the crime summit).

Not all of the citizen comments were critical of the HPD. Another resident praised the police and offered the suggestion of rotating police officers from different locations to broaden their experience and knowledge of adjacent areas. “Start mixing the officers up. Every criminal around here knows every police
[officer] that works for the department.” This suggestion would put Petersburg officers in Hopewell, Hopewell officers in Chesterfield, Chesterfield officers in Petersburg, and so on. This idea garnered much applause from the crowd.
One concerned resident suggested that taxpayer money should not be wasted on “certificates of sympathy or having campaign teas”, thus saving money that could be directed towards law enforcement. She also suggested closing the park gate to the riverwalk when it closes at sunset to prevent people from using it as a staging area for theft and other criminal activity at night.
After additional time answering residents’ questions and replying to comments, law enforcement representatives and city councilors remained to meet with and engage individual residents directly.
While there is no set date for another city crime summit, the chief assured that he would be making monthly update appearances at future city council meetings, providing residents of Hopewell and the surrounding localities with more information as the department’s initiatives progress.

Petersburg Q2 Real Property Tax Bills Issued

PETERSBURG
CITY OF PETERSBURG
PETERSBURG- Second quarter real property tax bills will be mailed out to residents and businesses this week, according to the City of Petersburg. Those bills will reflect 2022 property values at the rate of $1.27 per $100 of assessed value.
The City is still working to merge 1st quarter real property payments received so that customer online accounts reflect all transactions. A software issue triggered 1st quarter real property tax bills, mailed in September, to reflect 2021 property assessments instead of 2022 assessments. That error has been corrected.
A supplemental real property tax bill will be mailed
in January 2023 with a due date of March 31, 2023, for the difference owed (or overpaid) in September 2022. Residents may begin to make payments on the supplemental bill in Janu-

ary. Third quarter real property tax bills are also due by March 31, 2023.
If a resident has overpaid and requires an abatement, please contact the Commissioner of the Revenue Brit-

tany Flowers at bflowers@ petersburg-va.org or (804) 733-2315.
The City apologizes for any inconvenience caused by the software error.

Virginia Lawmakers Visit PG Schools As Part of VSBA’s ‘Take Your Legislator to School Month’

PRINCE GEORGE- Prince George County Public Schools welcomed Virginia delegates Carrie Coyner (62nd District) and Emily Brewer (64th District) to the division’s campuses the last week of November as part of the “Take Your Legislator to School Month” celebration hosted by the Virginia School Boards Association.
VSBA’s “Take Your Legislator to School Month” was created by the organization to help build and nurture relationships between public education and the Virginia General Assembly. This initiative allows legislators to observe what is going on in Virginia schools, provides students the chance to meet and interact with an elected official, and allows public
school division leaders the opportunity to share their district’s goals with legislators and have engaging conversations about public education.
The delegates started their morning by touring the division’s newest campus, Middle Road Elementary School. With a tentative first day of school scheduled for mid-February 2023, Middle Road Elementary School will replace William A. Walton Elementary School, a campus that has faithfully served our division and community for over 50 years. The new school will have a student capacity of 850, supporting the educational needs of current and future students as Prince George County continues to grow.
The two Virginia General Assembly members then visited two of the district’s

schools during their morning in Prince George County. Del. Coyner visited William A. Walton Elementary School on Monday, November 28, and Del. Brewer visited North Elementary on Wednesday, November 30. Both lawmakers spent time with students and staff at each campus, culminating in storybook reading sessions in several classes, who received gifts of coloring and other books to enjoy after their visits. “We appreciate Delegates Coyner and Brewer for spending time with our school community here in Prince George County,” Division Superintendent Dr. Lisa Pennycuff said. “The VSBA’s ‘Take Your Legislator to School Month’ gives our school division a great opportunity to give our state-level representatives a first-person view of our com-
mitment to supporting the children of Prince George County.”
“Our school board thanks Delegates Coyner and Brewer for dedicating time in their day to visit our students and staff this week and for witnessing the work taking place inside our schools every day,” Prince George School Board Chairman Christopher A. Johnson said. “Our board values opportunities to welcome legislators to Prince George County schools through programs like ‘Take Your Legislator to School Month.’ Building strong relationships between our board and our fellow elected officials helps ensure we can advocate on public education matters on behalf of our students, staff, and community.”
Virginia Commission Releases Initial Report on Antisemitism in Virginia

RICHMOND- On Monday, December 5th, the Virginia Commission to Combat Antisemitism released its initial report on antisemitism in Virginia. Governor Youngkin established the commission on his first day in office as part of his campaign promise to address the rise in antisemitism occurring in the Commonwealth, a trend also occurring nationwide. In 2021, antisemitic incidents in the U.S. reached an all-time high with 2,717 separate incidents reported. In 2022 thus far, Virginia alone has seen nearly 350 reports of antisemitic acts.
Addressing the release of the report, the Governor said, “Hatred,
intolerance, and antisemitism have no place in Virginia and I appreciate the committee’s hard work to high-

Governor Moves Towards Ending Pandemic Penalties
STAFF REPORT LNNUSA.comRICHMOND- On Tuesday, December 6th, Governor Glenn Youngkin signed an executive order requiring all state departments and agencies to report all fines, fees, and suspensions issued related to COVID-19 pandemic policies. The Governor initiated a full review of those penalties, calling the fact that pandemic-era fines are still in place “infuriating”.
The announcement was also made that Governor Youngkin’s proposed budget, which he will release on December 15th, will include the official end of collection and enforcement of
all Covid-related fines and enforcement, as well as direct the Secretary of Finance to work with state agencies to develop a reimbursement process for individuals and businesses who paid unjust COVID-19 fines and fees. As part of that legislation, the administration will also restore business-related licenses that it says were suspended “unjustly”.
There are exceptions to the Governor’s proposal; the reimbursements of penalties and restoration of licenses will not apply to hospitals, assisted living facilities, nursing homes, and similar healthcare facilities.
light and grapple with these matters. We have challenges in Virginia and we must work together to address
them. For Virginia to be the best place to live, work, and raise a family, the Commonwealth must welcome people of all faiths, ethnicities, and backgrounds with open arms.”
The Commission is tasked with analyzing trends in antisemitism both nationally and in Virginia, examining the root causes of antisemitism, and proposing solutions to hold hate crime perpetrators accountable as well as support the victims of those crimes. The Commission’s initial recommendations include efforts to bolster K-12 education on the Holocaust and Judaism, increase hate crime reporting and data collection, and prevent state agencies from contracting with companies that have taken antisemitic positions.

“Take the Time to Solve the Crime.”

If I were a conspiracy theorist, I would connect the dots between President Biden, Hunter Biden, John Kerry, Al Gore, and China. All appear to be focused on solar power and electric cars for a reason. There is a time and place for some use of electric vehicles. As advancements have been and are being made, they may be the answer for the future, but we are not at that point in innovation.
Gore and Kerry have been beating the climate change drum for many years. If you believed their statements, our time is almost up on earth. Interestingly, neither
THE WEBS WE WEAVE
has given up their private jets nor have they given up their multiple homes. It seems odd to me that if they believe our coastal regions are about to flood, that they would buy ocean front property.
Returning to the other interesting participants in the equation - the Biden family and the Communist Party of China. Let’s look at the facts that we know. We know that Hunter Biden has had ties with the Chinese government that rewarded him greatly. Reports gained from his abandoned computer clearly indicated that Joe Biden was receiving a significant kickback from his son’s wheeling and dealing. (John Kerry’s son was also part of the Chinese enterprise.)
The Current Status
We have a president of the
United States making an allout press for electric vehicles, while at the same time trying to force more of our country’s electrical needs be addressed by solar power. Interestingly, most of the elements needed for the solar panels and batteries are controlled by the Chinese government. He does this in the name of protecting the environment, but the question is how?
Our country has made significant changes since the 1950s. Gone are the smokestacks that spewed clouds of pollutants. Scrubbers have been the law of the land for some time now capturing most elements. While at the same time, we are buying the fuel we need from other parts of the world that have ignored any serious concerns about harming their environment.
Remember that we are one planet, what happens elsewhere will in time affect us. Consider exactly what the Chinese are doing in Indonesia and other third world countries. Their environment and their resident’s well-being are being sacrificed so that some can claim they are saving the planet.
A massive Indonesia industrial complex is managed by a Chinese-Indonesian joint venture. Operations have led to polluted waters. Water temperature has increased as a result of exhaust from the cooling system destroying the traditional fishing industry

has its sights set on a newer industry, batteries.

Indonesia aims to secure its position in the global chain of battery production with help from a powerful partner, China. Chinese companies have partnered with Indonesian companies to export refined nickel products, which are a crucial component of many batteries.
What is happening in Indonesia is part of a global pattern where battery and other rare earth materials
are abundant. According to a report from ‘The Rest of the World’, “Residents in Chile, Argentina, Congo, etc. complain of environmental destruction, and dangerous or exploitative working conditions.” It is crucial to look at the material footprint of the solar and electric vehicle industry against the promised decrease in carbon emissions.
In the southern hemisphere, home of many raw materials for batteries, the rising demand for electric vehicles is threatening to worsen existing injustices in
the extractive industry. Most poorer countries simply do not have the environmental regulations that American and European countries have. The regulations they do have are often ignored. Likewise, advanced countries pride themselves on worker safety standards and child labor regulations. These type things are not an issue in third world countries.
These places withstand the worst of the immediate environmental fallout, yet most benefits from the extraction and manufacturing
is dominated by Chinese businesses.

Therefore, the questions arise. Why are some in our government so focused on something that sounds good while it is doing so much damage? Why are some in our government so focused on industries that enrich the Chinese Communist Party which is our greatest rival in the world?

Physical gold and silver will never become worthless. This fact does not make for much of a marketing pitch. But given recent events, this is a much more important feature than it looks at first glance.
Americans, and investors around the world, live in an age of collapsing confidence in institutions. The bubble economy built on zero interest rates by out-of-control central bankers appears to be in danger of implosion.
Companies can fail, and their share prices can go to zero. Bond issuers can default on their debt. This happens rarely in strong economies, but it can happen wholesale when bubbles pop. Today’s markets are largely an exercise in mass psychology. Fundamentals don’t matter too much. What underpins value as much as anything is the belief that the next 20 years in markets will look a lot like the last 20.
Stocks and bonds both took a beating this year. Most investors probably aren’t operating on a thorough anal-

It is hard to imagine markets doing well in a nation where so many citizens consider the government and major corporations to be corrupt. As bad as that is, there is another Twitter story which may have worse implications for stock and bond investors.
Elon Musk laid off 75% of Twitter’s staff and fired the senior management. Thus far, the company appears to be operating unimpaired.
In fact, Musk has reported user engagement in the platform is exploding.

The problem is a breakdown of trust. Even well-run companies are not immune.
If society and markets were functioning properly, Elon Musk’s reforms at Twitter would be rewarded.
Instead, Musk is being punished by virtue-signaling executives at other large companies who are now cutting their advertising buys at Twitter – something they have been doing anyway given the difficult economy.
Officials threatened to ban Twitter in Europe unless Musk agrees to let them dictate which ideas and messages get heard.
How does someone know who to trust with their money these days? Wall Street bankers and money managers aren’t held in particularly high esteem. Many Americans consider them to be part of the problem.
Faith in media, including the financial press, is in steep decline.

Gold, silver, and other tangible assets can’t go bankrupt and always hold value. In a world of perpetual growth and easy money that doesn’t sound too compelling. In the world we are being pulled into, it could be the only thing that matters.

Special thank you to Melba Mason for her care and friendship with Mama. Geanette was a lifelong member of Matoaca United Methodist Church where she served faithfully. She loved her church family and friends dearly. She grew up in Dinwiddie with her six siblings, working in the fields on their farm growing tobacco and peanuts, a hard worker for sure. After marrying, Geanette continued to work hard raising three children, sewing all their clothes on a pedal Singer sewing machine. Geanette worked at Seward luggage for many years, retiring to care for her grandchildren, taking and picking them up to and from school, doctor appointments, she was there for her grandchildren. Geanette worked until she was 81 years old, a testament to her working ethic and devotion. She retired after 20 plus years at Ettrick Elementary Cafe where all the children called her “Granny”. She loved to feed the children. Many days and weekends were spent on Lake Chesdin in a homemade house boat built by Baby Chick and dancing with Baby Chick when dancing was actually an art. Others were spent at their place on the Chesapeake Bay, fishing and crabbing. Geanette could not even swim but she got in boats anyway. The trips they took to Maine to see her twin sister and spend time together was one of her greatest joys. We could not have asked for a more feisty and funny Mother, Grandmother and Great-Grandmother. We will miss her dearly and treasure all her little funny sayings. We will miss you calling us Sugarlump and Doll Baby. You were one of a kind and so loved.

Karen Sabrina Hardy Newby
April 26, 1956 - December 2, 2022
Karen Sabrina Hardy-Newby “Brina”, peacefully entered into eternal rest on Friday evening, December 2, 2022, at her home in Hampton, Virginia. Sabrina was born April 26, 1956 to Joel M. Hardy Jr. and the late Joan E. Hardy in Surry, Virginia. Sabrina accepted Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior at an early age and joined Mt. Nebo Baptist Church in Surry, Virginia. She became a member of The United House of Prayer for All People under the leadership of Apostle S. Guy as an Original McCollough Specials where her membership remained until her passing.
Sabrina began her education in Surry County Public Schools. However, she decided that she wanted to go to a high school in a city, so she attended Denbigh High school in Newport News, Virginia, where she graduated in 1973.

After graduating from high school, Sabrina attended Virginia State College (University). Later, she decided to become a part of the family business, so, she transferred to John Tyler Community College where she graduated in 1986 with her brother Bradford in Mortuary Science. Sabrina completed her internship with Bland Funeral Home and continued working with them for a few years. Shortly after returning home, Sabrina work experiences included working at Norfolk State College (University) Housing Department and Surry Village Apartments.
Sabrina decided to return to the funeral business and began working with Cooke Brothers Funeral Home in Newport News, Virginia. When her mother’s health began to fail, she decided to step in and help out the family business known as Poole’s Funeral Home. This business is the oldest black business in Surry County that was established in 1890. Sabrina became the 4th generation to operate the business and served the areas of Surry, Smithfield, Hampton Roads, Tidewater, Southside Virginia, and Northern Virginia. The four generations include Merrit Bains Poole (great-grandfather), Artis Poole (grandmother), Joan Hardy (mother), and Sabrina Hardy Newby. Sabrina was a member of the Virginia Mortician Association and was recognized in July 2022 receiving the “Distinguished Service Award” from Peninsula Funeral Directors Association. She has received numerous awards and recognition. While she was in the hospital the last week of November, she learned that she would be honored on Saturday, December 3, 2022. Rev. James Harrison and Main Street Baptist Church wanted to thank her for being one of two funeral homes that served many families during COVID-19 in the Surry and Smithfield areas. This event happened one day after she passed, so her family accepted the award in her honor.
Sabrina loved music and enjoyed singing. She participated in the Rodger Holloman and Surry Community Chorus, Horace Blowe & Company, and the Rev. James Cleveland Gospel Music Workshop Choir Tidewater Chapter. Sabrina would wake up early, call a friend, and say, “I have a family to see today and a lot of business to take care of today.” “Do you want to ride?” If no friend was available, her loving husband would be her riding buddy. Sabrina was known as “The Traveling Funeral Director with A Smile!”
Her smile and soft-spoken tone was a special touch when it came to dealing with grieving families. Sabrina would take a death call, offer her condolences, sometimes cry, and then call her sister Jackie to tell her who passed. Sabrina would immediately switch to business mode and start making funeral arrangements to ensure the family got the best service. If the family didn’t have something, Sabrina would say, “Don’t worry everything is going to be alright.”
She was a caring, lovable, and classy woman that enjoyed talking, shopping, traveling, and most of all dining out. She enjoyed finding and sharing new restaurants with other people. She loved family and often would say, “Ain’t nothing like Family” and she always ended her conversation with “Love You”.
Sabrina’s love for people was known everywhere, and she never met a stranger. Whenever someone needed assistance with anything Sabrina would say, “Wait a minute, let me make a phone call”.
Sabrina was preceded in death by her mother Joan and her brother, Stafford. To cherish her memories: her loving husband, Morris Newby of Hampton, Virginia; her father, Joel Hardy, Jr. of Surry, Virginia; god mother, Sara Jean Walden of Holland, Virginia; step-daughter, Christal Newby of Newport News, Virginia; three children, that she called her own, Stacey Jones of Petersburg, Virginia, Deontae Jefferson of Newport News, Virginia, and Craig Evans, Newport News, Virginia; two sisters, Jacqueline Hardy-Ricks of Surry, Virginia, and Makeeta Keys (Jeremy) of Prosper, Texas; one brother, Bradford Hardy of Surry, Virginia; three sisters-in-law, Jenette Askia of Bowie, Maryland, Denise Tynes (Adrian) of Smithfield, Virginia, and Sandra Lundy of Newport News; two brothers-in- law, Lee Newby (Betty) of Surry, Virginia, and Douglas Newby (Beverly) of Smithfield, Virginia; three aunts, Gladys Hardy of Smithfield, Virginia, Eloise Hardy of Brooklyn, New York, and Shirley Hardy of Surry, Virginia; special uncle, Earnest Poole (Florine) of Surry, Virginia; two step-grandchildren Aleisha and Christopher; two nieces, Kiana Hardy (Marcus) and Kennedy Keys; three nephews, Rashad Jones, Jovon Ricks (Mariah) and Jaxon Keys; great nieces and nephews Kyla, Kamdon, Graisyn and Maverick, god-children, Jordan Hardy, Jamie Borden and Kenyze Leggon; god sisters, Shonda Poole and Alesha Bailey; god brother Xavier Bailey; a loving caregiver and assistant Marlenia Pulley, and numerous cousins, other relatives and friends.
