HOPEWELL– Hopewell’s Anchor Point subdivision ex pansion is undergoing a few changes from the original plan. Anchor Point Ventures, LLC and Doswell Properties requested an amendment to their original master plan to reduce the overall density of the Planned Unit Develop ment (PUD) and to complete the overall development that includes townhouses, 63 condo units that are already in existence, and single-fam ily detached homes. The applicants now propose to construct more new town houses and new single-fami ly homes with no condos. The construction of 25 more single-family detached dwellings and discontin uation of construction of condominiums within the PUD will reduce the R-4 PUD units overall while also reducing the size of homes and the number of condos from 315 to the 63 that are already constructed. In all, there are 185 town homes and 80 single family dwellings totalling 328 units. Under the current status, 528 units could have been built as part of Anchor Point’s PUD. However, the applicants requested to re duce that number to reduce allowableAccordingdensity.tothe request presented during a public hearing on August 9th, Anchor Point Subdivision is bounded to the north by the Appomattox River, to the east by Cabin Creek, to the south by Prince George Court Subdivision, and by Atwater Park, Robin Hood Drive, and various properties along Atwater Road to the west. About 95 acres total, the property is currently zoned R-4 PUD. Planned Unit Development classification allows growth in cluster type communities. With HHHunt serving as builder for the project, the original approved plan included 469 condos, 130 townhouses, and no single family dwellings. The up dated total homes includes 63 condominiums, 177 townhouses, 78 single family houses with 318 total units. “As of today there are 41 constructed townhomes, 63 condominium units, and 38 detached homes that have already been built,” city officials noted. The Anchor Point develop ers also requested the square footage of the townhomes and single family detached homes be reduced to bet ter reflect current market trends. Under the request, the minimum townhouse size is 1,300 square feet and minimum square footage for single family dwellings is 1,500 square feet, though buyers may choose to build larger units. Both city staff and the Planning Commission rec ommended approval of the change.Schools Superintendent Dr. BY ADRIENNE WALLACE FOR LNNUSA.com

The Anchor Point Home owners Association vice president said the group hoped the size would be greater with existing units larger than 2,000 square feet and home pricing around $350,000. He also expressed concern about pool access with the coming increase in residents, asking that a system be put in place before the build-out begins. Vice Mayor Johnny Partin made a motion to table the matter until the first meet ing in September in order to discuss home sizes further. Mayor Patience Bennett seconded the motion, which failed 5 to Councilor1.Deborah Ran dolph made a motion to approve the request to amend the plans along with the prof fers presented. That motion passed 6 to 1.

Melody Hackney said the development may offset the reduction in student popula tion with only a few number of students attending classes at the sites which serve the Anchor Point area. Anchor Point Ventures, LLC is offering several proffers along with a new street lights plan, including gated emergency access to provide emergency access for the community. These improve ments include clearing and pruning of limbs and base asphalt repair. Developers agreed to not allow the sale of more than two homes to a single buyer in an attempt to prevent an influx of rental units.

Councilor Janice Denton expressed concern about the subdivision attracting renters, saying, “People take better care of something they own more than some one else’s property that they rent.” While the builders admitted that they can’t con trol the rental market, they are trying to structure the build-out to help keep rental to a minimum if not prevent itDevelopersoverall. guaranteed townhouses will be a min imum of 1,300 square feet and detached homes a mini mum 1,500 square feet.

Marshall Hopewell’sParker, retired football coach and athletic director, first met Littlepage when he taught him driver’s educa tion. From there Parker went on to his own coaching career and served as the junior varsity boys basketball coach under Littlepage for 15 years. “I was coaching other sports and Coach asked me to come on board, and he had a way to get you to want to be part of his team.”“Hetaught me so much and was a great mentor just how I saw him treat the players. You see coaches cursing and yelling at their players, but Coach Lit tlepage never did that. PETERSBURG Governor Youngkin Launches Petersburg Partnership

PETERSBURG– Old Towne will see a major change to two major restaurant desti nations as a popular Peters burg figure exits the stage. For nearly two decades, DJ Payne has been a staple in the Old Towne business community. He took over Wabi Sabi in July of 2008, launched DJ’s Rajun Cajun in July of 2016, and now has sold both to a local restau rant“Whengroup.we came to Old Towne, we fell in love with Old Towne. But those who know Payne don’t expect him to surren der to retirement, a senti ment he echoed himself. “You know DJ. I’ve always got something cooking on the back burner,” Payne iterated, smiling. Patrons of the two restau rants will find the popular destinations in the hands of seventeen-year hospitality and food industry veteran, Kyle Houts. For Houts, one of the restaurants has a per sonal significance sparking his“I’veexcitement.beencoming to Wabi Sabi for over ten years now, which is why I’m so excited that I get to own it because it’s been a big part of my life,” he said. Houts in tends to add some personal touches to Wabi Sabi and a brand overhaul to Rajun Cajun. Both restaurants play a role in his commitment to a larger investment in the city, including an effort to revive the “taste of Old Towne”.AsforPayne, he is excited for the next leg of his jour ney but also remains grateful for those who supported him over the years. “We are very excited about our next step, but we will never forget this part of the journey,” Payne said, ac knowledging that the com munity’s support was the catalyst for the success of his ventures in Petersburg. What Retired Life Looks Like for a Former Race Dog

LocalLNNUSA.com

HOPEWELL- In 2018, Floridians voted to amend the state constitution with Amendment 13. This amendment outlawed greyhound dog racing and would gradually phase out the Florida tradition over a span of two years. Racing continues to take place in only two U.S. states—West Virginia and Arkansas. Arkansas has a plan to phase out racing soon, but West Virginia currently has no plan to outlaw the sport. By De cember 31, 2020, all dog racing ceased in the Sun shine State, leaving many greyhounds jobless and in need of a permanent home. Because many Florida rescues were blacklisted from receiving greyhounds, owners sent their dogs to rescues in other states where their dogs could retire and find new homes.

About Page is loaded with infor mation for owning a retired racing racing“Whendog.agreyhound’scareerhascome to a close, they are looking for a loving ‘forever home’. These amazing, beautiful dogs are ready for a home life; much of their daily routine at the track trans lates well into life as a pet,” itRobinsays. Strom and her hus band Eric Strom can vouch for that. The couple had never owned a greyhound before but had owned Wei maraners and thorough bred racing horses. After moving to Hopewell and living in a house without a dog for several months, Robin found herself long ing for a companion. “I remember saying to Eric, ‘Eric, in the winter time when we’re here and there’s a fire in the fireplace, I want to be able to look down at my dog or pet my dog,” she said as she gestured to the fireplace in her front sitting room. So, in 2019, the couple began looking for a greyhound through JRG. The process starts with the application. After providing basic informa tion like where you live and where you work, Robin says you get to fill out your preferences for the dog’s color and sex. Before JRG retires any of their greyhounds, the dogs go through an extensive vetting process to ensure the dogs are healthy before they find their new homes. After the couple put in their application, months passed before they received a call that the rescue had found them the perfect match in December of 2019.“We found your dog,” the volunteer said: a black and white male named Kotto. “When I saw him I started crying because he was so flashy. He was stunning,” Robin said. She remem bered the day they adopt ed Kotto vividly. “They have a process where they bathe them, chip, and they disperse them to their own ers. There is one volunteer for each person who is adopting.”Hewaspure bone and muscle—his racing phy sique still in tip-top shape since he had just run his last race two months before in Palm Beach. The couple decided their first goal would be to get some weight on him. To conclude the adoption, a JRG volunteer takes the Strom’s photo with Kotto and a sign that says “Got cha Day!” Then, the new family goes on their way. Kotto’s first few days home with the Stroms were full of surprises and moments of learning for all of them. “He was like our Weima raners. They’d never had an owner. He didn’t really respond to touch. But I knew that that didn’t mean anything. It took time for them to trust and under stand and respond.” The Stroms had rehomed working dogs before, so this behavior did not turn them off. She was looking for a meaningful bond with a dog who had never had the opportunity to just be a dog. The JRG website prepares new owners for this type of behavior as well and tells parents to expect their greyhound “to be somewhat shy, confused and very curious..” Kotto was mostly curious. Robin said she often found Kotto trying out new squishy places to lay down during his first few weeks home. Kotto experimented with the couch, pillows, so fas, carpets, and the many dog beds his new parents bought him. “In the kennels, a bed is unsanitary. It is hard plastic so they can hose them down. He wasn’t used to being on anything soft. They can’t believe it when they have a soft spot to lie down. They love it.” About a year after adopting him, Kotto started to really open up and show off his goofy and gentle personality. “It took him one year to play with a toy,” she said. “He squeaks it about once a day and he always looks at me like he is so proud.” It took Kotto a year to open up to meeting other dogs as well. But the biggest stride Kotto made was learning to trust Robin and Eric as his owners. When they first brought him home, Kotto did not make eye contact with anyone.“Now, he will sit for 20 minutes and stare into my eyes. It’s like he’s trying to memorize my face.” Even as she talks, Kotto is just inches away from her. He is sprawled out on a fluffy carpet with his toy nearby. Somehow, he seems fully relaxed while also being ready to tend to Robin if she needed him. She attri butes their deep bond to Kotto’s past as a racer. “If you get a dog who comes from a life of work, they are more appreciative. They are so happy to be with you. They bond imme diately,” she said. “I really feel like we are his family.”

Sometimes, people be lieve that a small lie might be okay. This often leads to bigger lies to cover the first. No better example exists than Richard Nixon when he denied knowledge of a third-rate burglary at the Watergate office of his Democrat opponents. This led to a trial in the Senate which resulted in his resig nation of the presidency. In the following fifty years, some political candidates and office holders can no longer differentiate between truth and hyperbole. They must believe that voters, their constituents, are so financially illiterate that they will believe anything the me dia will report. Two bills that passed the United States Senate are perfect examples. The first gave away billions of dollars for mega-corporations to build computer chip facil ities in the United States. We need those facilities in this country to serve our needs. Hopefully, one or more will come to our region to provide good jobs and investments. How ever, place that bill beside President Biden’s so-called Inflation Reduction Act. In that bill, the propo nents argued that some corporations were simply not paying their share of the nation’s tax burden. Their argument is that these companies pay limited taxes. Why do they pay little or no tax? Because they have lobbied Congress to give them tax breaks. So here we have our Senators telling us that these corporations should pay a minimum 15% income taxes. Therefore, the big computer chips will get a big tax break with the first bill and then become obligated to pay a big tax payment in the other bill. That is not the stupidest part of the bill. No Tax Increases For Most People? This was the big prom ise that candidate Biden made during his election campaign. He said, “no one making less than $400,000 will pay a penny more in taxes.” He has repeatedly made that claim even regarding his Inflation Reduction bill. Virginian U.S. Senators echoed those claims. Additionally, Senator Manchin of West Virginia re peatedly claimed he would never raise taxes on middle income citizens. They say this in spite of non-partisan financial experts stating that all will be negatively impact ed.The bill calls for hiring 87,000 IRS employees to catch rich folks that are avoiding taxes. That group is 1.8% of our population,

EDITORIAL FROM PAGE 21 fewer than 500,000 families. If they were not lying, this would mean one agent per every 5 of those top earn ers. That makes no sense to anyone that looks at the numbers. Every well-off earner that I know of are respectable folks that would not risk their reputation by acting illegally. Additionally, they also have tax experts and tax lawyers to keep them selves legal. The fact is that if they are able to hire 87,000 new employees, probably 10,000 would be supervising rather than producing anything. We could easily expect that 3,000 or 4,000 would be assigned to Virginia. Can you imagine several hun dred agents roaming around Southern Virginia? Clearly, they will not be focused on high earners. They will have to prove their value by going after those of us who can’t afford tax specialists. Many of them will be our small businesses that will not have the time or resources to fight and will simply take a hit just to get rid of the auditors. Maybe they do need a few more employees. I need a particular copy of a letter they sent me 15 years ago. The IRS states it is easy to get a copy. Howev er, for the last week, every time we call, we get a mes sage that no one is avail able. The recording tells you to call back later every time, then disconnects you. It appears that all their employees are pretending they are working at home, and no one is getting service. Don’t be too concerned, however, they advertised for agents this week. Those that apply must be willing to carry a firearm and not be afraid to use deadly force if needed. So, the House of Representatives passes a bill that our U.S. Senators support, to outlaw firearms while arming IRS agents? Hopefully, the public is not as stupid as they be lieve us to be. Hopefully, enough voters will not be tricked into supporting them as they bribe our citizens with the tax money that our children and grandchildren will be forced to pay. We love to hear from you! The Orwellian-named In flation Reduction Act passed both houses of Congress and is now on its way to the White House for Joe Biden’s signature.Thepoliticians responsible for multi-trillion-dollar fed eral deficits and a Federal Re serve which is completely out of control plan to “reduce” inflation by spending another $700 billion they don’t have. In other words, they plan to do more of the exact thing which makes every Federal Reserve Note worth less but claim credit for battling the price inflation wreaking havoc on Americans’ budgets.

The Journal touches on the only believable argument for the bill’s ability to reduce inflation. “Legislation that reduces the deficit could help cool inflation by reducing aggregate demand in the economy, economists said.”

Translated from econo mist-speak, this means Americans who are demoral ized and intimidated by the IRS will pay more taxes while spending and investing less. The IRS is notorious for its “guilty until proven innocent” posture toward taxpayers. Under the leadership of Lois Lerner, the Agency had been weaponized against conserva tives. Trust in American insti tutions had already hit an all-time low. Confidence will likely take another leg down. The move may drive the next wave of investors to have a look at physical bullion. The political class isn’t planning to spend less in order to fight inflation. They prefer the most draconian approach of controlling prices – a reduc tion in aggregate demand. That is bad news for conven tional assets, and stocks in particular.Investors may begin searching for assets which are off the grid and less vulnerable to inflation and financial turmoil as well as snooping by the legions of new IRS enforcers. The ownership of physical gold and silver products is not tracked in centralized data bases. And in the vast majority of circumstances, dealers are not required to file any IRS forms on customers who buy or sell precious metals. Taxpayers must track their own gains and losses and report them accordingly. About the Author: Clint Siegner is a Director at Money Metals Exchange, a pre cious metals dealer recently named “Best in the USA” by an independent global ratings group. A grad uate of Linfield College in Oregon, Siegner puts his experience in business management along with his passion for personal liberty, limited government, and honest money into the development of Money Metals’ brand and reach. This includes writing extensively on the bullion markets and their intersection with policy and world affairs.

Inflation + Weaponized IRS = Off-Grid Investing Boom

Saturday, August 20, 2022

Maybe there are a few people who believe more government intervention will improve effi ciency and control costs. Most know better.

The bill includes nearly $50 billion in funding for the IRS so it can hire 87,000 new bureaucrats. The Agency will more than double in size. IRS officials want at least some of these new people to be armed and ready to use lethal force while enforcing the tax code.

The measure includes funding for a variety of climate and healthcare initiatives. Supporters of the bill still have the audacity to argue the measures will reduce expens es.Skeptics aren’t buying it, but the Wall Street Journal reports; “The Biden administration and Democrats have pushed back on those criticisms, arguing the pack age’s provisions would help lower some important costs for families, such as those for healthcare and prescription drugs.”

It is no stretch to say that Jackie literally changed the world, for not only those she knew personally but for those who had only ever heard her story. If you knew Jackie, you knew you were loved. Always In Our Hearts

Prince was a man who spoke his mind freely and touched the lives of many, giving endless and unconditional love and advice to those close to him. He may have grown up in New York, but he made Hopewell, Virginia, his home. Anyone who knew Prince knew that you might find him writing poetry, laughing, joking with or at friends and family, or just relaxing and playing his game. Prince was not a stranger to strength; even though life was difficult for him, he always found a way to rise above it like a ‘prince.’ He was a talented poet, and we could always count on him to provide a poem whenever comfort or joy was need ed. Prince’s heart not only extended to friends and family, but he also loved his dogs. He was known to breed them and is leaving behind his favorite dog, Skye. His composure and ability to love the people who meant the most to him will leave a signifi cant void for those he loved. Prince’s greatest accomplishment and source of pride were his children. He strived to be the best father and unequivocally gave his all to his children. One thing he always wanted to be known for was being a good father/grandfather. And although he’s left behind his beautiful children, he will always be in their hearts and minds for the rest of their lives. A father like Prince is rare, one that’s generous, smart, and straightforward. Nothing will ever replace a father like him. Prince leaves to cherish his memory: his wife, Yvette Thomas Stevens; his father, Michael Stockdale; his six children, Vontae Stevens, Shaquitta Eley, Trevon Eley, Destinee Thomas (affectionately called Twin), Lord Zion Thomas(Thug), and Delani Hill, all of Hopewell, Virgin ia; seven grandchildren, Kimora Stevens, Kaneiyah Stevens (Midget), Kionna Stevens (hot sauce), Kiosha Stevens (China), KahMya, Ki’Azia, Deshaun Majestic Thomas ; three sisters, Yolanda Thomas Wilson, Pauline McNeil and Kasyra Mitchell; His sister/Aunt Sirena Lane, Two brothers, Howard Jones & Anthony McNeil; sister-in-law, Quoinesha Jones of Char lotte, NC; brothers-in-law, Shon Wilson of Stafford, Virginia and Roderick Lane of Lithonia, Georgia; his cousins who were as close to him as his brothers and sisters, Facilla Blanding, Charles Lockhart, James “Tommy” Lockhart; his aunt, Lilly Mae Blanding; nephews, Brandon Thomas and DJ Porter of Charlotte, NC, nieces, Nyah “Cressida” Roman and Sanaa Jones. His cherished special friends, many cousins, and in-laws also will miss him dearly. Fly high sweet Prince...We will miss you, baby! Ms. Talainamarie Winchester November 6, 1972 - August 14, Talainamarie2022Winchester’s sunrise was November 6th, 1972, and her sunset was on August 14th, 2022. Born in Orange, New Jersey to parents Florence and Horace Pyatt, she was the oldest of three daughters. She was a free willing and loving child, who loved to dance and laugh. She graduated from Union Catholic High School in Scotch Plains NJ. In March 1996 she and Bradford Johnson welcomed their only child Jazmin Johnson into the world. She later began working at Marine Container as an import-export administrator. In 2005 she moved to Virginia with Jazmin where they have remained. To know Talaina was to love her. She’s a genuine person and always true to herself, she did not care about what the next per son thought about her. She was a die-hard Dallas Cowboy fan. She left an impact on everyone that she met, you could always count on her for a good time, a good story, and especially a good drink. One perfect word to describe her was a fighter. She was one in every sense of the word physical, mental, and emotional. She did not give up and would not accept defeat. If anything was going to get done it would be on her own time in her own way. Even in her hard days later in life, she lived her life to the fullest, without complaining about the battles she was facing. She leaves behind her only child Jazmin Johnson (Shajuan). Her husband Robert Winchester, her mother Florence Pyatt, grandmother Camille Young, and sisters Yolonda Hazel and Tamme Hazel. Nieces December Price, Ashley Price, and Tamia Hazel, nephews Donald Hazel and Korey Hazel. bonus family, sister Yolanda Holloway, daughters Danielle Adams and Ky miesha Jones. Along with a host of other family and friends. Our family would like to thank everyone for their love, kindness, and support during this time. With special thanks to M.E. Fisher Funeral home for their kindness and support.
