Petersburg Reps Ask Governor to Intercede in Casino Referendum PETERSBURG

PETERSBURG- Senator Joe Morrissey and Delegate Kim Taylor, Petersburg’s two representatives in the General Assembly, jointly sent a letter to Governor Glenn Youngkin on Thursday, August 4th, informing the Governor of their concern about a potential casino referendum in Richmond.

The General Assembly passed the Virginia budget bill in June, and included with that bill was a measure that would prevent the City of Richmond from placing a referendum to approve a casino on the ballot until November 2023. Now, Morrissey and Taylor are questioning the intentions of Richmond officials.

“We are writing to you today to inform you of the potentially illegal actions of the City of Richmond,” the letter to Governor Youngkin reads. “It has come to our attention that Richmond is considering placing a referendum on the November, 2022, ballot that would ask city voters whether or not to approve of a casino in Richmond.”

state what actions on the part of the City of Richmond have prompted Morrissey and Taylor’s concern, they do explain that attempts to determine the status of a casino referendum left room for doubt. The representatives went directly to Richmond Registrar Keith Balmer, asking Balmer if the referendum would be included on the November 2022 ballot, a question for which he had no clear answer. “‘The City of Richmond has not told me whether or not to include the casino referendum on the ballot this

year,’” Balmer is quoted in the letter.

That answer did not assuage Morrissey and Taylor’s concern. They wrote to Governor Youngkin, “We find this answer unacceptable and shows Richmond’s intent to possibly ignore the law.”

In response to Richmond’s opacity on the casino referendum matter, the two representatives requested that Governor Youngkin utilize his administration’s resources to prevent Richmond from adding the referendum to their 2022 ballot. Specifi-

cally, they ask him to direct Attorney General Jason Miyares to block a Richmond casino referendum if the capital city attempts to move forward with that vote in November.

Whether Richmond does attempt to place the referendum on the 2022 ballot is yet to be seen, but the preemptive action by Morrissey and Taylor- and the possibility of Governor Youngkin and Attorney General Miyares’s intervention- may discourage the city from trying.

Hopewell Appoints Interim City Manager in Conflicted Vote HOPEWELL

HOPEWELL- With the current turbulent environment and lack of leadership in key positions inside the city of Hopewell, the need for an interim city manager took front and center at Tuesday’s special council meeting. The hiring of a qualified interim city manager- and ultimately a permanent City Manager- is crucial to the future of Hopewell; a motion was made in the meeting to select the city’s current IT director, Dr. Concetta Manker, to temporarily take on that essential role.

During the ensuing discussion, Councilor Janice Denton stated, “We have excellent employees, but this takes a very special person.”

But her opposition to Manker’s experience and qualifications was cut short. Mayor Patience Bennett evoked parliamentary procedure to end Denton’s opposition to the choice, interrupting her by stating that Denton’s three-minute time limit was used up. Denton disagreed, to no avail. “You have exhausted your time, thank you,” said Bennett, directing the next speaker, Councilor Debbie Randolph, to begin.

In return, both Randolph and Denton explained that it was not about faith in staff members but rather about focusing on their qualifications for the jobs for which they are being considered.

The discussion came to an abrupt end when Councilor Jasmine Gore called for the vote, forcing the council members to immediately proceed to voting.

Ultimately, the appointment passed 4 to 2 with both Denton and Randolph opposed to the selection.

Councilor Brenda Pelham was absent from the meeting.

Dr. Manker will take on the role of Interim City Manager on Thursday, August 11th.

HHS Students to Lose Access to Cell Phones this Fall HOPEWELL

HOPEWELL— As the new school year approaches, Hopewell City Public Schools sent out a message to parents stating that they are taking an important step to enhance student learning, culture, and safety at school: phones will no longer be out and/or used by students at school.

The decision received unanimous approval at a May school board meeting.

A public statement on the city website reads, “While we have attempted to accommodate student phones over the years and limit their use, we are finding that they are causing much more harm than help during the school day.

Therefore, starting at the beginning of this school

year, CGW [Carter G. Woodson Middle School] and HHS [Hopewell High School] will be implementing a pouch system from a company called Yondr

for any phones brought to school.”

According to Hopewell, each student will be issued a locking pouch to bring to and from school into which

their phones would be placed for the duration of the school day.

Yondr states, “We believe that phones have great utility. We have also found that learning and social behavior improve drastically when students are fully engaged with their teachers and classmates.”

Under the Yondr program, students would be required to bring their issued pouch-

they will maintain possession of their phone throughout the day- but it will be locked inside the Yondr pouch. At the end of the day as the students prepare to leave the school, the pouches will be unlocked so that they can once again access their phones.

According to Yondr, a survey of over 900 school partners to measure the effects of creating phone-free educational environments revealed “notable progress in multiple areas”: 1) 65% of schools saw an improvement in academic performance; 2) 74% of schools

saw an improvement in student behavior; and, 3) 83% of schools saw an improvement in student engagement in the classroom.

The reaction on social media has been mixed, with parents voicing their opinion both for and against the new policy. In a thread on the Hopewell VA Issues Facebook page, Robert Howard said, “That a great plan stick to it.” Jack Mike Welch agreed, saying, “See nothing wrong with it.”

In the opposite corner, Shawn Butcher said, “So when your child needs to call 911 due to active shooter and can’t, then what?

Your gonna blame who?

Biden? City officials? The police? It’s a dumb idea.”

Rebecca Young had a similar perspective, saying, “With the guns that r [sic] found in and around the high school u got to b kidding and let me say this, dummies, the phone sitting in my child’s locker does NO GOOD IF MY CHILD IS IN CLASS DURING AM EMERGENCY [emphasis original].”

As controversial as this new policy is, the school board vote made it official policy for the upcoming school year.

The small restaurant was overflowing with guests for both lunch and dinner throughout the rest of the week, many wishing Spiro, Lynn, and Bill a happy retirement through the open kitchen door. Longtime customers even paused to take pictures with the family as they said their farewells.

Saturday night’s dinner was the last for Alexander’s, but fans may see Spiro, Lynn, and Bill at festivals and pop-ups in the future. In the meantime, the Georgogianis family members will be taking a well-deserved rest.

Local Sportscaster Highlights Merner Field History HOPEWELL

HOPEWELL— Local sportscaster Stefan Calos placed a momentary spotlight on Hopewell’s Merner Field and its history on Wednesday, July 27th. The football field has played a central role in local sports since it was built in 1936 as part of the WPA public works project during the Great Depression.

Calos held his presentation at the city’s American Legion Post 146, one facet of the Historic Hopewell Foundation’s free 2022 Lunch and Learn lecture series.

became coaches and others who went on to college and NFL stellar achievements. The Blue Devils football team has won six state championships during its history, including two championships within the

last several years. After the presentation, former Blue Devils coaches and players also shared from the audience some of their memories of Hopewell football and Merner Field.

Calos also shared the history of the Tri-Cities radio station WHAP 96.9 FM/1340 AM, which has been operational since 1949, but, more importantly to Hopewell sports, has been broadcasting Blue Devils football games continuously for 73 years.

Calos currently continues announcing Hopewell’s games alongside lead announcer Jeff Butler along with former city assistant manager Charlie Dane and past and current coaches.

PETERSBURG- National Night Out took place across the country on Tuesday, August 2nd, and area communities participated in the annual event with cookouts and festivities.

In Petersburg, neighbor-

hoods such as Overbrook and Poplar Lawn hosted events, along with churches and community groups. City police officers, including Police Chief Travis Christian, made their way to each event, spending time faceto-face with members of the community. This year, they were joined by members of the State Police, who are

supplementing the city’s police force and assisting with patrolling in the wake of the violence the city experienced this past spring.

The Petersburg trolley also joined in, carrying city officials and Petersburg’s state representatives, Senator Joe Morrissey and Delegate Kim Taylor, who also mingled with the crowds.

RICHMOND— Governor Glenn Youngkin announced on Thursday, August 4th the dates of Virginia’s sales tax holiday weekend – Friday, Aug. 5 through Sunday, Aug. 7, 2020. Specifically, the sales tax holiday starts at 12:01 a.m. on Aug. 5 and wraps up on Aug. 7 at 11:59 p.m. During this period, Virginians can buy a number of items in stores, online, by mail order, and by telephone without paying sales tax.

“During a time of high inflation and gas prices, Virginians will receive some needed tax relief this weekend as they support local businesses across the Commonwealth,” said Governor Glenn Youngkin. “Our administration will continue to stand up for parents trying to buy school supplies for their children, Virginians preparing for upcoming weather-related events, and families struggling with the cost of living challenges. Building on the record tax relief for Virginians in this year’s budget, lowering the cost of living remains a top priority for my administration as we work together to make Virginia the best place to live, work, and raise a family.”

“The sales tax holiday benefits both businesses and consumers,” said Secretary of Finance Steve Cummings. “And, with inflation at its highest level since 1981, Virginians need this tax relief now more than ever.”

Chili Peppers Close Out 2022 Season COLONIAL HEIGHTS

COLONIAL HEIGHTSThe Tri-City Chili Peppers’ 2022 season came to a close on Saturday night, July 30th, with two split-squad games.

After a disappointing 6-3 loss to their rivals, the Peninsula Pilots, on Thursday, July 28th, the Peppers split up to take on two games in two locations on one night last Saturday. At home in Colonial Heights, the Chilly Peppers faced the Boone Big Foots. The game got off to a slow start, with both teams struggling to make it around the bases. Finally, in the fifth inning, the Big Foots were able to expand their lead with three runs, ending the inning 5-1.

The sixth inning saw the Peppers struggle again, putting no points up on the board for the second inning in a row. Meanwhile, the Big Foots managed to load the bases and increase their lead over the Peppers again.

The Peppers were unable to catch up to the Big Foots in the remaining innings of the game, and the last home game of the season ended with a Big Foots win, 9-4.

While the Chilly Peppers floundered at Shepherd Stadium, the Chili Peppers were

on fire in Morehead City, North Carolina. In one of their better games of the season, the Peppers kept the Morehead City Marlins on the hook for eight innings, blazing their way to a 14-1 mercy rule win.

While the Chili Peppers managed to close out the season with a fiery win over the Marlins, that performance was not enough to raise them up in the division rankings. They finish out the season in secondto-last place in the East Division and tied with their rivals, the Pilots. While the ranking may be disappointing for the Peppers and their fans, some comfort can be taken from the fact that they so soundly defeated the Marlins- who are ranked first in the divisionas a farewell to the 2022 season.

Illegal Discharge of a Firearm: 1987 | August 1, 2022 On June 6, 2022, at approximately 9:36 p.m., a Black male suspect driving a darkcolored Honda Accord chased the victim in his car through the Food Lion parking lot at 15702 Jefferson Davis Highway in Chesterfield County. The suspect eventually stopped his car and approached the victim’s car on foot while the victim had parked on the opposite side of the parking lot. As the suspect approached the victim, the victim began driving away and the suspect fired one round from a handgun.

15TH SENATE DISTRICT If you are like me, you are tired of 90 plus heat, but even worse are the many stories about the hot weather. Excuse me, but isn’t it always hot in July and August? I guess the reporters just got bored with reports on Hunter Biden, inflation, and the shortage of baby formula. Therefore, this week and the next few weeks, I thought I would get you to focus on something cooler.

In the old cartoons, there were always a few shows that had a ball of snow rolling down a mountain. It always got bigger and bigger then hit a cartoon character like Wile E. Coyote. As with all cartoon characters, he would be alright and ready to continue after the roadrunner a few moments later.

Real Life and Gun Policy

In real life, when someone gets hit, they may never get up. That is not what our young people understand.

They seldom see the pain and agony from these television shows. All of us grew up with shows that, at some point, someone was shot,

Times have changed since then. The snowball of the 60’s evolved into more and more violence as each new television or movie has tried to outdo the older shows.

More violence seems to have a greater draw on the market. Today, there are more people shot every night than anyone can keep up with. When the good guys are wounded, they are healed by the next week’s show.

RUFF FROM PAGE 24 property and raid stores because of a bad situation that occurred halfway around the country, we have a problem. The snowball continues to grow.

Law-enforcement officers are ambushed and murdered in cold blood. Young school children needlessly die because no one is willing to acknowledge that some folks need help. The snowball grows.

The value of life has been reduced to a point where some could care less about the miracle of birth. When Ralph Northam, a medical doctor who focused his

career on saving children, was Governor, he could not see the difference between an abortion and delivering a baby and allowing it to die.

There is not a significant difference between a late term abortion and allowing a child to die, but never in the early years of the abortion debate would anyone make such a callous statement.

Where is the Brick Wall?

In the Roadrunner cartoon, the snowball would always hit an unmovable object, such as a brick wall, which would break apart the snowball. Are we nearing that brick wall?

Signs are mixed. The

courts are starting to understand, but liberal legislators and prosecuting attorneys around Virginia and the country are still getting elected. There are those in Richmond, Washington, and local government that are quite willing to undermine our laws and law enforcement rather than supporting those who risk their lives to protect ours.

The ‘Wishful Thinking’ Fed Is Anything But ‘Neutral’ STEFAN GLEASON MONEY METALS NEWS SERVICE

With last week’s second 75 basis-point rate hike, the Federal Reserve now claims it has achieved a “neutral” monetary policy stance. That would mean, in theory, that interest rates are neither stimulating nor restraining the economy.

“Now that we’re at neutral, as the process goes on, at some point, it will be appropriate to slow down,” Fed Chairman Jerome Powell said.

Powell was effectively telling markets he intends to pivot away from inflation fighting.

Yet inflation, even when measured by the Fed’s own preferred gauge, continues to run hot.

The Personal Consumption Expenditures price index came in at 6.8% in Friday’s report from the Bureau of Economic Analysis.

A Fed funds rate that currently stands at just 2.5% doesn’t look “neutral” at all when the official inflation rate is running at 6.8%.

Former Treasury Secretary Larry Summers accused Federal Reserve officials of engaging in “wishful thinking” when it comes to inflation.

“Jay Powell said things that, to be blunt, were analytically indefensible,” Summers told Bloomberg. “There is no conceivable way that a 2.5% interest rate, in an economy inflating like this, is anywhere near neutral.”

Left unsaid by Summers and Powell is that the slowing economy and highly leveraged financial markets cannot take much more rate hiking without collapsing. That’s why the Fed is signaling it will wind down its tightening campaign – before achieving any kind of victory over inflation.

In the face of four-decade highs in inflation, monetary policy has gone from ultra-accommodative to slightly less accommodative.

It likely will never get to a truly neutral level – at least not for any prolonged period.

The financial system and the U.S. government itself (the world’s biggest debtor) need interest rates to continue to be suppressed. Negative real rates enable borrowers to be bailed out over time by rising inflation and rising nominal asset values.

Over time, negative real rates also put upward pressure on precious metals markets.

Gold and silver prices lost ground when the Fed started talking tough on inflation. But they rebounded last week when central bankers dialed down expectations for future monetary

tightening.

The Fed is anything but neutral when it comes to crafting monetary policy. Central bankers inevitably pick winners and losers when they manipulate interest rates and pump liquidity into the financial system.

The winners of Fed policies are typically Wall Street investment bankers and Washington, D.C. politicians. And so are the holders of tangible assets financed with debt.

The losers are: 1) savers and pensioners on a fixed income who don’t receive earnings that keep pace with inflation; and 2) workers whose wages never get them ahead of rising costs of living.

It is possible, however, for individual investors to position themselves on the winning side of Fed policy decisions.

During some economic cycles, it pays to be in stocks. During others, it’s far more profitable

to be in assets that benefit from the unintended consequences of the Fed’s inflationary policies.

As the U.S. economy heads into recession, conventional stocks are vulnerable. Meanwhile, demand for safe-haven alternative assets combined with ongoing inflation pressures could provide a big boost to undervalued gold and silver markets.

STRAWBERRY WALNUT HAND PIES Ingredients Dough: • 1/4 cup California walnuts • 1 1/4 cups all-purpose flour • 1 teaspoon cane sugar • 1/4 teaspoon salt • 7 tablespoons cold unsalted butter, cubed • 4-5 tablespoons ice cold water • 1 egg, beaten

Strawberry Walnut Filling: • 1 cup strawberries, tops removed, halved • 1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice • 1 teaspoon cornstarch • 2 tablespoons cane sugar • 1/3 cup finely chopped California walnuts Frosting: • 1/2 cup powdered sugar • 2 tablespoons 2% milk • 1/2 teaspoon beetroot powder • 2 tablespoons finely chopped California walnuts

Directions 1. To make dough: In food processor, pulse walnuts until fine and evenly ground.

Add flour, sugar and salt to

ground walnuts; pulse to combine. Add cubed butter; pulse until butter is in small pieces. Add cold water 1 tablespoon at a time, pulsing while adding, until dough starts sticking together.

2. Transfer dough to clean surface; shape into two 4-inch discs. Wrap with plastic wrap and refrigerate 1 hour.

3. To make filling: In food processor, pulse strawberries and lemon juice until slightly chunky.

4. Transfer to saucepan and gradually whisk in cornstarch until dissolved. Stir in sugar.

5. Heat over low heat until sugar dissolves, about 3 minutes. Turn heat off and stir

in chopped walnuts. Transfer mixture to small bowl; refrigerate.

6. To assemble hand pies: Remove one dough disc from refrigerator. Lightly flour work surface and rolling pin.

Roll out dough into large rectangle. Slice dough into six 4-by-2-inch rectangles. Place on parchment paper-lined baking sheet.

7. In bowl, mix water and egg. Brush perimeter of dough rectangles with egg wash. Place 1 tablespoon filling on center of dough.

8. Roll out second dough disc, creating six rectangles of dough. Place on top of jam and crimp edges with fork

to seal. Freeze hand pies 20 minutes.

9. Preheat oven to 375 F. 10. Trim uneven edges of dough with sharp knife and brush tops and sides with egg wash.

11. Bake 20-24 minutes until golden brown around edges.

Cool at room temperature 5 minutes on baking sheet then transfer to wire cooling rack until completely cooled.

12. To make frosting: In bowl, whisk sugar, milk and beetroot powder until thick but smooth. Drizzle frosting over hand pies and top with chopped walnuts. Cool 15 minutes, or until frosting is set.

January 28, 1949 - August 2, 2022 Mary Ann Owen, 73, of Dinwiddie, VA, passed away on August 2, 2022. She was preceded in death by her parents, Paul Andrew Hoylman and Patricia Ann Hoylman; and her siblings, Jack, Donnie, Timmy, Ruth Ellen, and Russell. Mary Ann is survived by her loving husband of 55 years, Joseph E. Owen, Sr.; children, Elva (Robert), Joe, and Stacey; grandchildren, Kristin, Taylor, Devane, Stephanie, Dalton, Ariel, Ashleigh, Joseph, Patrick, and Chloe; great grandchildren, Brady, Cash, Skyler, Maxine, Hank, Tatum, Gabriel, Bryson, Nova, Jaxson, Graham; and siblings, Pattie, Gennie, Dennis, Paul, and Richard.

June 12, 1940 - August 2, 2022 Lenora Gillenwater Sutphin, 82, of Charles City, Virginia, died on August 2, 2022.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 40 years, Kenneth Sutphin; along with her parents, Rex and Mildred Gillenwater; brother, Dr. Vernon Gillenwater; and sister, Pamela Webb.

Surviving Lenora is her sons, Kenneth Michael (Miliza) and Barry (Sonda). Daughters, Leah Quinn (James) and Holly Owens; 9 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren.

Patricia Vlk Blackburn, 74, of Disputanta, Virginia, passed away on Sunday, July 31, 2022. She was preceded in death by her parents, Anthony and Marie Vlk; and her sister, Marie Vlk Winner.

Patricia was a longtime member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church and a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and sister. She will be greatly missed. Patricia is survived by her loving husband of 52 years, Eddie Blackburn; daughters, Stephanie Daniel (Chris), Andrea Tew (Jason), and Tara Blackburn; grandchildren, Alexandra Fisher, Dustin Yonts, Jackson Tew, and Kirra Spivey; great-granddaughter, Carrie Fisher; siblings, Betty Dubosky (Paul), Carol Martin (Charles), Theresa Hubert (David), Ann Wood (Bobby), Tony Vlk Jr., and Paul Vlk (Debbie); and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. The family will receive friends on Thursday, August 4th from 10 AM - 11 AM at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 9300 Community Lane, Petersburg, where a funeral Mass will be held at 11 AM. Lawrence Edward Watkins, 83, went to be with the Lord on July 30, 2022.

He was the son of the late Haywood and Sarah Watkins. He was also preceded in death by his daughter, Lisa Faber. Lawrence retired from Walmart after 15 years as a meat cutter. He was a lifetime member of Namozine Volunteer Fire Department Company 4, as well as a member of Grace Baptist Church in Dinwiddie. Lawrence is survived by his loving wife of 32 years, Janet Watkins; his son, Michael Watkins (Joyce); stepchildren, Pam Cunningham (Ed), Deborah Elliott (John), Stephanie Perkinson; loving grandchildren, Melissa Kimmel and Timothy Love; 9 loving step-grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; sisters, Patty Braswell and Elizabeth Walker (Eddie); and nieces, Dorna and Amanda. A graveside service will be held on Wednesday, August 3 at 10 AM, at Blandford Cemetery, 319 S. Crater Road, Petersburg. Memorial contributions may be made to Crater Community Hospice. June is survived by her husband of 58 years, George Edward Anderson II. Devoted wife and mother, she also leaves her sons, George Edward Anderson Ill (Cherie) of Arizona, Michael Todd Anderson (Jessica) of Matoaca, Virginia and Gina Marie Anderson of Petersburg, Virginia. Angela Perrin

November 21, 1933 - July 29, 2022 Angela Dina Straccioni Perrin, 88, of Prince George, VA, passed away on Friday, July 29, 2022. She was preceded in death by her parents Dino and Catherine Straccioni; and her loving husband of 67 years, Cecil E. Perrin.

She was survived by her daughter, Toni Perrin Lunsford; son-inlaw, Cary B. Lunsford; grandchildren, Dino and Dina Lunsford; great-grandchildren, Dylan and Tucker. She also is survived by her twin sister, Mary S. Esposito; and her sisters, Hilda R. Straccioni and Michelle Straccioni; her nephew, Mark Esposito and wife, Suzanne; and great-nephews, Mark and David; and numerous other loving family and friends.

Angela will be remembered as a loving mother, grandmother, sister, and friend to many.

She was very active in St. James Church in her early years. She played the organ for the church and also taught music at the school. Angela, as well as her sisters, all attended St. James School and later attended Hopewell High. Angela and her twin, Mary, were the first set of twin head cheerleaders, and both on the national honor society. She later attended business college to pursue her accounting education.

Angela worked most of her life as her family had many businesses. Virginia Meat Market, Lakewood Supper Club, and then TMP Construction in which she was a bookkeeper for 47 years.

Many referred to Angela as a Saint because of her loving and giving nature. She never met a stranger and was kind to everyone who knew her. She always took care of everyone else in her family. She was a wonderful cook, being Italian, she had many recipes which were passed down from generation to generation.

She always said that she knew she would marry Cecil, from the first time they met which was at the Lakewood Supper Club, when he was in the military at Fort Lee. She was never quite the same after his passing because of their love for one another.

She will be missed by everyone who knew her, especially her devoted family and friends who loved her more than life. The family will receive friends on Thursday, August 4, 2022, from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at J.T. Morriss & Son Funeral Home - Hopewell Chapel, 820 W. Broadway Avenue. Ramona Kimberlin Leetch, 92, of Chester, VA, passed away peacefully on July 28, 2022. Born in Mcintosh, Florida, she was the daughter of the late Willis C. Kimberlin and Edna L. Kimberlin; and was also preceded in death by her brother, Bill Kimberlin; as well as her devoted, loving husband of 67 years, Thomas A. Leetch.

Ramona enjoyed spending her time traveling, gardening, and executing needle work. She is survived by her daughters, Debra Harrison (Herman) and DeAnne Rott (Ben); grandchildren, Julie Eastwood (Matthew), Wendy Woodburn (Todd), Abigail Miceli (Nicholas), Erich Rott (Courtney), and Gregory Rott (Katey); great-grandchildren, Evelyn Eastwood, Ramona Woodburn, Robby Woodburn, Owen Rott, Benjamin Rott, Gwendolyn Miceli, Colleen Miceli, and Logan Miceli.

Derek Scott Estes

November 5, 1969 - July 28, 2022 Derek Scott Estes, 52, of Chester, Virginia, placed his hand in Jesus’ hand and walked into heaven, on Thursday, July 28, 2022. Born in Mineral Wells, TX, Derek moved to Colonial Heights, VA when he was 4 years old. Where he was affectionately known as “Nose”. He was the son of Anona Hogwood and the late Robert F. Estes, Jr. Derek was a “phone man” for Verizon for 24 years. To say he loved his job and all his coworkers is an understatement. He always said, “I never worked a day in my life because I love what I do at the phone company.” His crew was his family and he loved each of them dearly. Derek was a devoted father and husband. He was an all-in family man, giving everything he had in him to his wife and children. He loved his daughter, Sydney; son, Eric; daughter, Emma; and son-in-law, Dylan with everything in him. His greatest joy was being a dance dad, football/soccer dad as well as a counsel, guide, and encourager to his children. His garage was his refuge, not only to work on vehicles and tinker around (which were some of his favorite hobbies), but also to hang out and talk about life with his children, or anyone who needed a dad/friend to lean on during rough times. He loved watching his children grow, learn, and accomplish their goals. He actively participated in all their activities, school events, and projects, and loved hanging out with them and their friends. He was the “go to” dad for both good and bad days. He always gave the best hugs that would put all your broken pieces back together.

His mission in life was mentoring young folks through coaching. He coached soccer and flag football, and assisted coaching Thomas Dale High School’s football kickers. His view was to coach the whole person, not just teach them skills. He understood sports was more about life than just playing a game. He wanted the young folks to grow, succeed, and never give up on moving forward on whatever path God had laid out for them. For him, strong values, hard work, and a team mentality were the keys to success. Some of his sayings that he used were; “stay in the game,” “get out of your head,” “give me two steps,” “go after it on the field,” and “use your head for more than just a hat rack.”

Derek had a quick wit and great sense of humor. He always made everyone laugh. He never met a stranger, and truly cared about each person he would meet. His claim to fame was telling stories. Whether it was reading bedtime stories or stories about his family, travels, childhood, or his job. This was one of his greatest qualities down to the very last “detail.” From childhood all the way up to his last moments, every friend he had was a cherished relationship. He was always there to lend a hand or an ear to listen no matter what he was doing. He was just a phone call away. His most cherished bond was with his twin brother (Bruther), Dana. Dana was his second heartbeat and they enjoyed everything they did together. He loved his sisters and appreciated all they did to support him through the years. He adored his wife, Kathy; they were inseparable. They strived to embrace every moment of life that God gave them. Even with the onset of terminal cancer, they focused on living, laughing, and fulfilling God’s mission and purpose for their marriage. One of the last things he said to her was “we made the best team.”

The attribute he was most proud of was his work ethic. Which he attributed to his loving mother, Anona. He admired her greatly. He loved to travel as much as possible. His favorite memories were made on the Florida Gulf Coast and his trip to Maine. If there is one legacy Derek would want his friends and family to carry forward, it would be his faith in God. Derek’s unbreakable faith and trust in our Lord’s spirit, strength, love for him, and plan for his life carried him through the difficult battle he faced. He leaned on God every step of the way. We will miss our son, husband, father, brother, uncle, and most of all friend tremendously. He will always have a piece of our heart and we will always carry a piece of his with us.

Derek is survived by his mom, Anona Hogwood; wife, Kathy; daughter, Sydney Estes; son, Eric Rice; daughter, Emma Conway (Dylan); brother, Dana Estes (Betty); sister, Kimberly Estes Clements (William); sister, Debora Estes; nephew, Ethan Clements; nieces, Deana Clay and Brittney Clay; his Verizon crew (family); and many step sisters/brothers, nieces and nephews. Clate “Clayton” Martin, 87, passed away July 29, 2022. He was born in Leckie (McDowell County), West Virginia on April 27, 1935 to the late Walter and Ella Martin and was also preceded in death by his first wife, Aggie Martin; siblings, Flake, John, Leonard, Charles, and June Martin, Pauline Rash, and Ann Presley, and beloved dog, Ginger. Mr. Martin was stationed in Germany while he served his country in the United States Army, and served as Maintenance Supervisor for Westvaco for 40 years. He enjoyed spending time outdoors gardening, farming, and caring for his yard. He loved animals and visiting the mountains of West Virginia, but above all he cherished the time that he spent with his family. He looked forward to family reunions and was always first in line for the food. Mr. Martin is survived by his wife of 42 years, Phyllis E. Martin; daughters, Kim Martin Branco (Jeff) and Mary Susan Martin (Ken McGee); grandchildren, Brooke Stone (David), Ashley Parson (Antonio), Amber Broaddus (Steve), Erika George (Benjamin), and William Clayton McGee; stepson, Michael Sadler and his wife Paula along with her children, Alicia, Jen, and Nick; stepdaughter, Robin Parson (Mike); sister, Betty Blankenship of Florida; great-grandchildren, Darius, SJ, Isabella, Hayden, Benjamin, Owen, and Parker; devoted caregiver, Keya Goode; and dachshund, Cocoa.

Juanita Jones Hundley, 82, of Colonial Heights, passed away on Wednesday, July 27, 2022, at Tyler’s Retreat at Iron Bridge.

Born April 10, 1940, Juanita was the daughter of the late J. Fabius and Louise M. Jones of Littleton, NC. She was a member of the Calvary United Methodist Church in Littleton in her early years and was a member of Highland United Methodist Church after moving to Colonial Heights. She graduated from Littleton High School, received her Bachelor’s degree in Business from East Carolina College (now University) and her Master of Education from the College of William and Mary. Juanita was a teacher and counselor at Colonial Heights High School, and served her community as Chairman of the Colonial Heights School Board and as Chairman of the Chesterfield-Colonial Heights Social Services Board.

Juanita is preceded in death by her parents, her older sister Charlotte Callihan and brother-in-law Aaron, and by her beloved husband of 53 years, Jack R. Hundley. She is survived by two nephews, Daniel Callihan (Colleen) and David Callihan (Tracy); and a great-nephew and nieces, Matthew, Kate, Taylor and Caroline. The family wishes to thank her dear friend Debbie Walwer of Colonial Heights, who graciously supported Juanita in the years since Jack’s passing.

A funeral service will be held in the Colonial Heights Chapel of the E. Alvin Small Funeral Home, 2033 Boulevard, on Thursday, August 4, 2022, at 11 a.m. The graveside service and interment will be held at the Calvary United Methodist Church Cemetery in Littleton, NC at 3 p.m.

Garry F. Marcum, 83, of Colonial Heights, Virginia entered into eternal rest on Wednesday, July 27, 2022. He was born on October 10, 1938, to the late Hardin F. and Avoline Marcum, of Huntington, West Virginia, and is also predeceased by his twin brother, Larry, and his wife, Nancy.

He leaves to cherish his memory his son, Garry Marcum (Catherine), of Midlothian; his daughter, Sherri Willingham (Craig), of Colonial Heights; three grandchildren, Cason, Carson, and Avi Willingham; a sister, Judy Messinger (Jim), of Proctorville, Ohio; a special sister-in-law, Judie Allen Marcum, of Bramwell, West Virginia; a special friend, Patricia Kight, of Colonial Heights; and a host of family and friends.

Mr. Wayne Pernell Graves, 68, of Stony Creek, VA, entered into eternal rest on July 30, 2022.

Wayne was born June 13, 1954, to the late Virgin Winfield and Thomas W.

Overseer David Jose Briggs, Sr. was born on October 28, 1971, in Richmond, VA. He was the son of the late Linda C. Briggs. Overseer Briggs accepted Jesus Christ as his personal Lord and Savior at a young age and joined Shalom M. B. Church in Richmond, VA. He was educated in the Richmond City Public Schools. Overseer Briggs was an innovative entrepreneur.

Overseer Briggs was united in holy matrimony to Michelle Jenkins on July 13, 1991, in Richmond, VA. To this union, four children were born. They moved to Fredericksburg, VA in 1993 where he settled Graves. and joined Tower of Deliverance COGIC under the leadership of Pastor Joseph Henderson, Sr. He was educated in Dinwiddie County School In 1998, Overseer Briggs felt the hand of God leading him to step out on faith and establish System. He was employed at Boar’s Head Covenant of Blessing Church in Culpepper, VA. He later relocated his family to West Helena, in Jarratt, VA with over 30 years of service, Arkansas where Overseer Briggs, founded and pastored Covenant of Blessings Anointed wherein he retired. His pastime loves includCathedral. During his tenure, there were many lives blessed through the outpour of love and ed fishing, hunting, softball and racing. outreach ministries such as Christmas on the Curb, food pantry giveaway amd community day.

At early age he confessed Christ and joined Overseer Briggs was a true servant of the Lord. Overseer Briggs was not only a preacher and Little Bethel Baptist Church. In addition to teacher of the Word of God, but he was a musician and a psalmist. Overseer Briggs loved God his parents, he was preceded in death by his and God’s people; he had a passion for witnessing wherever he went. His conversation would five sisters, Herlene Jones, Katherine Griffin, always lead to the Word of God. In addition to his Christian commitment, in 2011, Overseer Ethel Taylor, Virginia King and Shelia Graves; Briggs authored the book “Trapped in a Two-Way Love Affair”. God also graced him to produce two brothers, Thomas Graves and James an album, “Worship your Way Out”.

Dr. Bertie Jeffress Powell July 15, 1933 - July 28, 2022

Bertie Jeffress Powell, 89, of Manassas, VA, died July 28, 2022 after a short illness. Bertie (Dr. Powell) was born to the late Bertie Hamlette Jeffress and Conway A. Jeffress in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania on July 15, 1933. She was baptized at the age of 9 at Mt. Horran Baptist Church in Pittsburgh.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her sister, Mildred J. Berry. Dr. Powell is survived by her loving husband of 68 years, the Rev. Dr. Grady W. Powell, Sr.; two daughters, Sandra and Dorthula (Dot) both of Manassas; three sons, Grady Jr. of Manassas, Herbert and Eric both Los Angeles, California. She is also survived by two sons-in-law, Albert Mitchell and Harvey Woodson; a daughter-in-law, Danette Powell; and two grandchildren, Grady III of Manassas and Harvey III of Brooklyn, New York. She leaves to cherish her memory, two beloved sisters, Mrs. Joy J. Franklin of New York and Mrs. Fay J. Davis of Richmond; a loving brother, Dr. Conway A. Jeffress of Novi, Michigan; three sisters-in-law, Mrs. Louise Jeffress of Novi, Michigan, Mrs. Lucille R. Powell of Williamsburg; Mrs. Geneva Powell of Richmond; and a host of close-knit nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and dear friends.

Dr. Powell was a lifelong learner and believed in the power of an education. She attended Virginia Seminary where she met her husband in January 1951. In September of 1951, she entered Virginia Union University where she received her B.A. in Religious Studies; she earned her Masters and PhD in English Education from the University of Pittsburgh. She was an extraordinary and beloved teacher and professor who taught English and French at A. G. Wright High School in Louisa County, J. E. J. Moore High School in Prince George, and at Peabody High School in Petersburg before joining the faculty of Virginia State University in 1968. She retired from Virginia State in 1991 and was named Professor Emeritus at that time.

Dr. Powell enjoyed the written word and published some of her writings, among them were Encounter, a book of poems and The Sabbath After, a series of sermons and poetry in honor of the victims of 9/11. Her favorite book to read, however, was Precious Bible Promises from which she read daily. She served in many roles during her lifetime, but three were especially important to her: as a Sunday School teacher of college students and young adults at Gillfield for many years and as a member of the Ministers’ Wives and Ministers’ Widows Alliance (MWMW) of Petersburg and the Tri-City University Women where she served as president. She was also the founding leader of the MWMW Foundation of Petersburg.

Dr. Powell was known for her generous spirit, quiet graciousness, and endearing smile. If you asked her from where her sweet spirit emerged, she would tell you unequivocally – it came from her love for Jesus Christ and her praise and gratitude for His continuous grace and mercy.

She fervently and earnestly sought to have a closer walk with God each day of her life, as she expressed in this line from her poem My Walk With God:“...what I know about my strides has been revealed in time, There is no need to walk at all unless I walk with God.” Funeral services for Dr. Bertie J. Deacon Floyd L. Henderson, Jr. August 20, 1934 - July 27, 2022

Floyd Lee Henderson, Jr. affectionately known as “Butter”, departed this life Wednesday, July 27, 2022, at Bon Secours Southside Medical Center in Petersburg, VA. Floyd was the oldest of five children born to the late Floyd L. Henderson, Sr. and Carlee Henderson on August 20, 1934. He was a proud “Blandford Boy” educated in the Petersburg Public School System graduating from Peabody High School in 1951. He later matriculated at Virginia State College (now Virginia State University) achieving his Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education and a Master’s in Science Education.

Floyd realized at the early age of 12 that he could be a blessing to his family and himself by earning his own money. That’s when he started working in his grandparents’ garden, feeding the chickens, cutting wood for cooking and heating the house. He eventually found his first real job delivering the Progress-Index Newspaper to over 100 customers from 1946 to 1951. During the same time, he worked at the Fort Lee Officer’s Club in the evenings setting up pins in the bowling alley. While in school, Floyd also waited tables at the Petersburg Hotel for Kiwanis, Lions and Rotary Club luncheon meetings, where he served as a soda fountain clerk. In addition, he worked in local drugstores, as well as held various duties at the College grill on Virginia State’s campus. Floyd’s intense work ethic and family ties also took him to New York City where he worked as a Montgomery Ward shipping clerk, garment center factory worker and waiter at the largest seafood restaurant on the East Coast.

Floyd served two years in the U.S. Army from 1957-1959. Before departing for his tour of duty in Germany, he proposed to the “Love of his Life”, Irma Tyler. Upon his return, they married in June of 1959. As a result of this union two children were born, one daughter, Latetia Marie and one son, Jeffrey LaMonte. He was the proud grandfather of two grandsons, Trent Wesley and Trace William Henderson.

Serving as a teacher, assistant principal, and principal for close to 30 years, Floyd shaped the lives and minds of several generations of students in the Petersburg Public School system. He started his teaching career at Carter G. Woodson High School in Hopewell in 1960. The following year, he realized his dream job when he was hired in his hometown of Petersburg, VA as a sixth and seventh grade math/science teacher. After twelve years of teaching at Henry Williams Elementary and Westview Elementary Schools, he humbly accepted a promotion to an administrative position. During the next 17 years, Floyd served as an Assistant Principal of Westview and J.E.B. Stuart Elementary Schools and Principal of Robert E. Lee and Walnut Hill Elementary Schools. On October 1, 1989, he retired as Principal of Walnut Hill Elementary School.

Floyd was a lifelong and faithful member of Tabernacle Baptist Church, Petersburg, VA., where he accepted Christ and was baptized at the age of 12 by Rev. F.J. Boddie. As an adolescent, Floyd served on the Junior Usher Board and in the Junior Choir. As an adult he continued his service to the Lord in many ways: Representative to the State Council of Boy Scouts, Tabernacle Baptist Day Care Boards, three Pulpit Committees, the first Financial Secretary, Men’s Club Secretary, Chairman of the Breakfast and Bereavement Ministries, member of the Downtown Churches feeding program, Vice Chairman of the Advisory Board of the Tri-City Salvation Army as well as the United Way Allocation Committee for the Tri-City area. He also loyally served as Chairman of the Trustee Board for more than twenty years and as Chairman/Co-Chairman of the Diaconate Ministry.

During his lifetime, he was a member and held numerous leadership positions of various civic and social organizations including being a member of the Alpha Kappa Sigma Chapter of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc., the Pasteboard Club, Club 36 and he was a devoted King in Queens, Incorporated. He was also recently inducted as a Life Member of the Peabody High School Alumni Association.

Floyd’s professional organizations included:memberships with the Petersburg Tri-City Retired Teachers Association; the Petersburg Education Association (PEA) and the National Educational Association (NEA).

Floyd was preceded in death by his parents, Floyd Sr and Carlee Henderson; a sister, Charmaine Winfield; and two brothers, Christon and Willie Henderson.

Floyd is survived by his loving wife of 63 years, Irma Henderson; his two children, Latetia Henderson of Washington, DC, and Jeffrey Henderson (Dana) of Upper Marlboro, MD; two grandsons, Trent and Trace Henderson of Upper Marlboro, MD; one sister, Juanita Bradley of Petersburg, VA; one brother-in-law, Frank Tyler of Amelia, VA; two nephews, DeGeon Bradley (Marie Richardson-fiancée) of Chester, VA, and Frank Tyler III (Kelley) of Manasses VA; one niece, Ashley Tyler-Gee (Timothy) of North Chesterfield VA; one great nephew, Rashaun Brown of Petersburg, VA; devoted cousins including, Gloria Dean Ward, Rosiland Lee, Nick Williams, Quentin Henderson (Faith), Andre Henderson (Connie), Deirdre Henderson, Pam Lundy, Bernard Lundy (Catherine), Robin Caldwell (John), Rosezelia Roy, Carleasse Blackwell (Nathaniel), Anthony Roy, and Amanda Bostic, as well as other devoted and lifelong friends including, Herman Wyatt, Samuel Winston, Olonzo Stith and Janice Jones. Special thanks to a devoted caretaker, Janet Brown.

Services will be held 11:00 A.M., Monday, August 8, 2022, at the Tabernacle Baptist Church, 418 Halifax Street, Petersburg, VA, the Rev. Dr. Robert A. Diggs, Sr., Pastor, eulogist. Interment to follow in the Dinwiddie Memorial Park with military honors.

Pelosi Makes Controversial Stop in Taiwan STAFF REPORT LNNUSA.com

In a highly-criticized move, Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi visited Taiwan on Tuesday, August 2nd. The move is not unprecedented as then-Speaker Newt Gingrich visited the island nation in 1997, but Pelosi is the highest-ranking U.S. official to do so since, according to a report from NBC News. Officials and leaders in the U.S. took various positions on the move in the days leading up to her trip to Asia. Some Republican leaders applauded the stop in Taiwan as necessary so as not to appear weak in the face of China’s threats to take action if Pelosi visited the island. President Joe Biden initially stated that the visit was “not a good idea”, citing escalating tensions with China, which claims Taiwan as its own while Taiwan claims to be an independent nation.

Pelosi and other officials have communicated that the visit does not change the United States’ stance or policies regarding Taiwan.

San Francisco Voting Law Struck Down STAFF REPORT LNNUSA.com

SAN FRANCISCO- A San Francisco law that permitted non-U.S. citizens to vote in local school board elections was overturned late last week.

According to the Daily Wire, the controversial law allowed non-citizens to vote in those races if they have school-aged children. The law was originally passed in 2016 and had a two-year delay before taking effect, but “was extended indefinitely in 2021”, according to the report. But on Friday, July 29th, a San Francisco judge overturned that city ordinance, citing both California state law and the U.S. Constitution as giving the right to vote only to citizens of the United States.

The judge’s ruling follows a similar ruling in New York made this past June.
