Cockade City Casino?

Some in Favor, Others Seek More Details PETERSBURG

PETERSBURG- The possibility of a casino coming to Petersburg has been a topic of discussion since late fall, and local elected officials are beginning to voice their opinions on the issue. Senator Joe Morrissey explained that the city must obtain a gaming license from the General Assembly before a casino can be considered. Once that license is obtained, Petersburg’s city council would vote on the issue and decide which casino and resort company would be chosen from among the possible candidates. Finally, the citizens of Petersburg would also have to issue their approval for this move by voting on the question in a referendum on the November ballot.

“It’s going to be a firstclass casino resort. Not a regional casino that is topheavy with slot machines, but a first-class resort,” Morrissey explained.

Freshman Delegate Kim Taylor, who now represents the city in the House of Delegates, provided the following statement on the potential casino to LNN: “Creating jobs in the Petersburg-area is among my greatest priorities. It goes without saying that a casino would create many

new jobs and bring in a significant amount of tax revenue. With that said, we must ensure this deal works for Petersburg. My focus remains on gathering input from constituents and community leaders to ensure any potential project meets our priorities and does not create any unanticipated issues.”

Like Morrissey, Petersburg Mayor Sam Parham was also in support of a casino development in the city.

“Senator Morrissey and I have started the talks of us possibly getting a gaming license here to hopefully be able to have a resort-style casino here in the City of Petersburg,” stated Parham.

As to which casino company may select Petersburg to build, the mayor named One Casino (Alfred Liggins/ Urban One), Golden Nugget Casinos, Bally’s Corporation, and Live! Casinos (Cordish Companies) as potentials but did not limit

the possibility just to those four. Parham also named several locations within the city that are being considered for a casino resort, including the Roper Brothers property, the old location of Southside Regional Medical Center on Sycamore Street, and, at the front of the pack, the acreage behind the Sheetz and Dunkin Donuts on Wagner Road.

While support for the casino has been voiced among several representatives, there has initially been little voiced opposition to the concept. Public debates on social media often reveal that people have more questions about the possibility before they are willing to support or condemn it.

Barb Rudolph is one of the founders of local Facebook group Clean Sweep Petersburg, a forum where discussions of city issues such as this one often take place.

“Obviously it provides some opportunities, but it

also provides some liabilities, and while the group doesn’t have a particular position on it, you see all kinds of different points of view, and I’m encouraging folks to express what they believe about it in a respectful way,” stated Rudolph.

She cited her own opinion of what the pros and cons of the arrival of a casino would be for Petersburg. In the pros column, Rudolph includes an established audience among the citizens of the city who would utilize a casino resort, as well as the establishment being a draw for tourists to visit Petersburg.

Under cons, she cites Petersburg’s foundation for a casino in terms of public health, education, and jobs among other categories, questioning whether the city is prepared right now to support the large endeavor.

Rudolph also expressed that she would like to see more details supporting the claim that the casino-resort would be a large source of revenue for Petersburg.

As discussions surrounding the topic of the casino take place and as officials move forward in the process of obtaining a gaming license, LNN will continue to monitor the story and provide updates.

Riverwalk Wins Gold HOPEWELL

HOPEWELL— The Hopewell Recreation and Parks department has received the Virginia Environmental Excellence Gold Medal Award from the Commonwealth’s departments of Environmental Quality and Conservation and Recreation. The gold medal is the program’s highest honor, with only five other gold medalists receiving the recognition across the entire state. The program highlights innovative projects that improve the state’s environment in the categories of sustainability, environmental project, land conservation or implementation of the Virginia Outdoors Plan.

According to the department, the Hopewell Riverwalk “opened for public use in the spring of 2019 and has quickly become one of the region’s most popular recreational assets”. It was constructed by John K. George and Co. in just under five months and measures 1,736 feet of wooden boardwalk.

stated that the second phase of the riverwalk, a walkway extension of 1,400 feet that will allow users to walk all the way to the city marina, was approved with a 6-1 city council vote. A construction contract has been executed at approximately $252,000 to fully fund

the project. The extension will bring the total length of the riverwalk to more than 3,200 feet, making a roundtrip journey from one end of the walkway to the opposite end and back again well over a mile. The ability to walk a fairly extensive distance while also enjoying views

of the river is likely to attract even more users from Hopewell and beyond.

The second phase of the project had been made possible with grant funding provided by the state’s Recreational Trails Program, facilitated by the Department of Conservation and Recreation.

The Recreation and Parks department stated that the 80/20 grant program will contribute roughly $475,000 towards construction in phase two.

Petersburg Receives Circuit Court Records Preservation Grants PETERSBURG MEDIA RELEASE CITY OF PETERSBURG

PETERSBURG- Petersburg Circuit Court Clerk the Honorable Maytee “My” Romero de Parham has been awarded two Circuit Court Records Preservation (CCRP) program grants totaling $44,058.75. The grants will be used for local records preservation and digitization so that the records will be available to the public through the clerk’s online records management system. The grants are the first to be awarded to Petersburg since 2017.

“The record books reflect the history and generational culture of Petersburg,” said Ms. Parham. “It is critical that

the information held in these books, dating back to 1781, is preserved and made accessible for future generations to better understand the evolution of our city.”

The CCRP is a collaborative program between the Library of Virginia and the Virginia Court Clerks Association (VCCA).

Funded through a $3.50 portion of the clerk’s recordation fee, the CCRP provides resources to help preserve and make accessible permanent circuit court records stored in the 120 circuit courts and at the Library of Virginia.

HOPEWELL—Just before Christmas, the Hopewell Rotary Club held its annual Christmas celebration at Haley’s Honey Meadery. But the gathering was more than a party; for the members of the club, it was an opportunity to recognize lifetime achievement and community contribution, coordinate support for a local organization helping needy families, and plan for future projects for 2022 that will help reopen in the face of the pandemic.

Hopewell Rotary President Jeff Butler started off the event by presenting the Rotary International Lifetime Achievement award to Onza Hyatt in recognition of “exceptional and significant community service efforts”. As an added bonus, meadery manager Laura Sutton presented Hyatt with a gift of the establishment’s locally-crafted meade.

When asked to sum up Rotary’s purpose and mission, president Jeff Butler said, “Rotary is a service group that tries to come alongside of and assist existing service projects while creating our own.”

In that spirit, the Hopewell Rotary closed 2021 with a cheerful celebration of community commitment and prepared for their next acts of service to the Tri-Cities in 2022.

HOPEWELL– The City of Hopewell welcomes Antonio “AJ” Starke as Interim Chief for the Hopewell Police Department. Captain Starke joins Hopewell as Chief Kamran Afzal, Hopewell Police Chief since 2019, has accepted the Chief position in Dayton, Ohio.

Captain Starke served four years active duty in the United States Army.

He earned his bachelor’s degree from Virginia State University and his master’s degree in criminal justice

from Liberty University. He is a graduate of the 34th session of the Police Executive Leadership School and a graduate of the National Criminal Justice Command College.

“Captain Starke is a well-respected leader in the region with the reputation for strong work ethic and an adamant commitment to service,” said March Altman, Hopewell City Manager. “We are very impressed with his professionalism, knowledge, and his dedication to serving the citizens of Hopewell and believe that he will serve our community well.”

Captain Starke began his law enforcement career in 1991 with the Chesterfield County Police Department.

He has 30 years of policing experience, with the past nine years as a member of command staff at the rank of captain. Captain Starke has held several command positions within the Chesterfield Police Department to include Office of Professional Standards, Personnel and Training, Special Operations, and the Information Services Division.

PRINCE GEORGEOn December 10, 2021, at approximately 10:40 pm, Prince George County Police received information regarding a shooting in the area of the 5200 block of Prince George Drive. The investigation

revealed that numerous shots were fired with several bullets striking a targeted, occupied residence. There were no injuries resulting from this incident.

On December 21, 2021 Prince George County detectives arrested Playford, Michael Hart II, age 19, of Hopewell VA, in connection to the shooting. At this time, the suspect is being charged with attempted first degree murder, conspiring to commit murder in the first degree, maliciously discharging a weapon, and

felony eluding. Hart was transported to Riverside Regional Jail and is being held without bond.

Multiple Accidents and Fires in Petersburg on Christmas Eve PETERSBURG

PETERSBURG- Petersburg Fire & Rescue responded to three vehicle accidents on I-95 Northbound near Washington Street beginning at 10:49am on December 24th.

Two people were injured in one accident and transported to a local hospital with moderate injuries.

At 11:35am on December 24th, Petersburg Fire was dispatched to Farmer Street for a structure fire. The fire was started from cooking.

Smoke filled the apartment and hallway on the second floor. All residents were evacuated. There were no injuries. Damage is estimated at approximately $2,000.

Petersburg Fire received a call at 12:41pm on December 24th reporting a structure fire on Roundtop Avenue.

On arrival units found heavy smoke coming from the rear of the house. The fire had spread from a bedroom to

the attic and roof area. There was heavy fire and heat damage. Two people were taken to a local hospital for smoke inhalation. The family is being assisted by the Red Cross. The cause of the fire is believed to be accidental. Damage is estimated at $30,000.

Petersburg Fire officials are reminding everyone to be careful during the holidays.

1,500 Individuals Honor Fallen in Amelia AMELIA

AMELIA- Wreaths Across America’s annual ceremony was held across the U.S. on Saturday, December 18th.

Locally, a Wreaths Across America escort ride left the Morrissett Funeral and Cremation Services parking lot the morning of the 18th.

Over 120 bikers rode to remember fallen U.S. veterans, to honor those who serve, and to teach our children the value of freedom. Those bikers joined over 1,500 individuals at the Virginia Veterans Cemetery in Amelia County where over 5,000 wreaths were placed at each headstone of fallen American servicemen and women.

The threat of rain and the eventual downpour at the cemetery did not deter those who came to honor those laid to rest at Amelia. Joseph Diamond is the Wreaths Across America Location Coordinator for the Virginia Veterans Cemetery in Amelia. He spoke on the importance of this event, especially in the country’s current polarizing political climate. “[The event is] extremely important. It promotes unity and respect regardless of background, beliefs or anything that would affect someone’s opinion. We’re here to honor everybody,

regardless of religion, creed, or background.”

He also explained that their commitment becomes increasingly more challenging each year. There are over 5,000 heroes laid to rest at Amelia. That number grows by approximately 500 each year. At the cost of $15 per wreath, the cost of honoring the fallen tops $75,000 per year.

Diamond also explained where to go online for those wishing to support these efforts. “Wreaths Across America on a Google search will bring you to the web site. You can search this cemetery, VAVCAM is the code, Virginia Veteran’s Cemetery in Amelia.”

Several organizations combined to create the motorcycle escort. Many of those who rode expressed the importance of the day.

“We’re here to honor our fallen comrades. It’s a worthy cause,” stated Teddy Knight,

Virginia Chapter 17 of the Blue Knights.

The purpose of participating in today’s memorial for Tyler Cox, Pipefitters Union Motorcycle Club out of Richmond, Virginia was simple.

“Remembrance. That’s What we’re here for. To remember those fallen.”

Bill Lunsford of Downtown Thunder talked about the participants’ commitment to the effort. “It’s always amazing because it’s grown every year. Before anybody knew how good the weather was going to be, so many people were talking about they were going to be here and they wanted to participate this year, how important it was for them to be part of the community and to get our community back on its feet and show our support for everybody.”

To many in attendance, the day held even more personal significance. “It’s kind of surreal for me because this

particular event has a special meaning to me this season because, outside of helping Wreaths Across America, in January I lost my Granddad and it’s going to be very special for me to put a wreath on his stone because the cemetery we’re going to is where we buried my Granddad,” explained one wreath-layer.

Diamond also has a special connection to Wreaths Across America. He said that he had three inspirations: his wife who served in mortuary service in Iraq; his police partner, a United States Marine Corp Veteran who died in the line of duty; and his grandfather, a World War II veteran who passed away recently.

The Wreaths Across America organization reported that there were over 3,100 locations and a total of 3.8 million wreaths laid across the country and abroad on December 18th.

City of Petersburg Receives Grants to Address Stormwater Management PETERSBURG MEDIA RELEASE CITY OF PETERSBURG

PETERSBURG- The City of Petersburg is receiving two grants from the Virginia Community Flood Preparedness Fund that will support a Comprehensive Citywide Drainage Study, updating the Floodplain Management Ordinance, developing a Resilience Plan, and hiring a Certified Floodplain Manager. The grants total $2,623,558.

“Much of the City’s main infrastructure dates to the early 1800’s and as Petersburg continues to grow, the stormwater management systems must be upgraded and expanded to handle current demands and prevent continuous flooding,” says Petersburg City Manager Stuart Turille. “The first step is the completion of a citywide stormwater management study that will identify problems and outline solutions for flood mitigation.”

The City has been exploring grant funding for a Comprehensive Drainage Study for decades. This grant will enable the City to inventory the antiquated storm sewer system, model the existing conditions of both the closed and open

storm sewer systems and surface waters to better identify the source of problem areas, and identify nature-based solutions and other priority projects to alleviate repetitive flooding problems throughout the City. The outcome of the Drainage Study will be

projects that can be implemented to provide flood prevention and protection, as well as equitable community improvement. The Comprehensive Drainage Study will begin in 2022.

The Resilience Plan includes preparing, planning, recovering, and adapting

from potential future flooding events. The Community Outreach Plan will educate residents and property owners on floodplain management. The Resilience Plan will be incorporated into the City’s 2040 Comprehensive Plan.

His expertise includes partnering with schools in the development of after school sports activities for youth and the management of a multi-million-dollar sports complex that hosted invitational baseball and softball tournaments.

“Mr. Allen demonstrated

that he has the experience and leadership to energize and grow Recreation, Special Events & Volunteerism,” said Deputy City Manager Tangela Innis.

“He has the skills to create a sense of community and place that connects citizens to a variety of experiences while supporting health and wellness.”

Allen has held numerous recreation and youth services positions in multiple jurisdictions including Henrico, Goochland, and Richmond. He is a motivational speaker for youth and a basketball referee.

What to Expect in Travel in 2022 Family Features

After a couple abnormal years, many families are eager and ready to travel together again, and there are indications some pandemic-influenced travel behaviors will persist in 2022.

For example, remote work and virtual school allowed families to travel and combine work and vacation time into “flexcation” getaways, a trend that will continue, according to the 2022 Vrbo Trend Report.

In addition to the 44% of families that said they’re more likely to work remotely from a place that’s not their home, extended stays are also on the rise. The vacation home site and app has seen a 68% increase in demand for 3-4-week stays over the past year.

Consider these 2022 trends spotted by the travel experts at Vrbo: Up-and-Coming Destinations Spots in Ohio, New York and Alaska saw double vacation rental demand over the past year. Within driving distance of major Midwest metros like Chicago, Indianapolis and Louisville, Cincinnati was the year’s top emerging destination.

Other up-and-comers include Niagara Falls, a popular choice for those who wanted to experience life at the border. family travel. Chalets saw a nearly 85% increase in demand year over year. Located on lakefronts or nestled in the woods, these charming and idyllic properties are desirable lodging options for many families.

Kids Call the Shots After being cooped up at home, it may be no surprise parents are letting their kids have a bigger say in vacation planning. Compared to pre-pandemic times, half of the families surveyed said they’re more likely to let their kids decide where they vacation and 43% of parents are more likely to let their kids skip school for vaca-

tion.

Traveling with the Pack Many families adopted pandemic pets because they had more time at home to spend with their furry friends. Now more people are bringing Fido and Fluffy along on vacation; 68% of pet parents have traveled, plan to travel or would like to travel with their pets.

What’s more, there has been a 40% increase in demand year-over-year for pet-friendly vacation homes.

Early Bird Bookers If 2021 was any indication, families will continue booking their vacations further in advance. Booking activity occurred an average of 2-3 months earlier than usual for several major travel seasons. Families booked summer travel in February, holiday trips in July and snowbirds got a head start on booking warm weather stays for 2022. In fact, 60% of survey respondents said they plan to book their vacations earlier than they did in pre-pandemic times with nearly half making plans 3-5 months in advance.

Shoplifting: 1956 December 27, 2021 This week, the Chesterfield County/Colonial Heights Crime Solvers program needs your help to solve a series of shopliftings that occurred in Colonial Heights.

On Nov. 10, Dec. 7 and again on Dec. 15, 2021, a suspect entered the Target at 721 Southpark Blvd. in Colonial Heights, concealed several packages of baseball, basketball and Pokémon trading cards and left the store without paying. In total, more than $1,000 in merchandise was stolen.

The suspect is described as a white male with dark hair and a beard. He was last seen leaving the area in a red Toyota SUV with a white sticker on the left side of the liftgate.

Race of the Lemmings SENATOR FRANK RUFF

15TH SENATE DISTRICT Thank you Senator Joe Manchin. Every American should appreciate that Senator Manchin was the one Democrat that refused to follow Senator Bernie Sanders and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (AOC) over the cliff of no return. They believed that they could bully him into going along with them to get along.

Manchin probably saved the Democrat Party from itself. Passage of “Build Back Better” would not have done anything positive for the financial future of our nation or your family.

What it would have done is continue to drive inflation even higher than we are currently experiencing.

The current rate, the worst in forty years, is bad, but the unbridled spending would shock everyone.

Just look at countries like Venezuela and now Turkey, where government has tried to dictate economic policy. The end result is inflation that is destroying the savings of those who have restrained their spending, saving for their retirement.

What Is Included Universal child care for three and four year olds.

Providing this benefit might

allow parents to return to the workforce earlier.

Parents would be allowed to choose between government or private care. If they choose private, the parents will have to pay the full cost, while the public attendee’s family would be paid for by taxpayers.

Currently, fully staffing at daycares is impossible.

Expanded Medicare and Medicaid Is another noble sounding idea. Currently, these programs are overwhelming the federal and state governments’ ability to afford them. Virginia’s budget for Medicaid is now 23% of our General Fund. Adding more services will worsen the situation. Meanwhile, because of low reimbursement rates to providers, doctors will restrict the number of these patients they see.

Three Months of Paid Parental Leave Is another great perk for those working. The cost, however, would be passed on to consumers. Large companies can survive by raising prices. Smaller companies would be placed in an untenable situation. They currently operate on smaller margins of profit. This would be another challenge.

Meanwhile, if employees are paid while not working for three months, replacements must be hired. Since the original

employee is guaranteed a job when they return, those replacements will then have to be let go. Knowing their position will be short term, the replacements are likely to continue to seek a more permanent job elsewhere. Expenses incurred with training them will go for naught in months or even days.

Many small businesses would not be able to compete with these new expenses. Less marketplace competition will result in higher prices and greater inflation.

Electric Vehicles This is one benefit that would not be available to most of us in our region for the foreseeable future. If one were to buy an American made electric car by 2027, the taxpayers would pay up to $12,500 for tax credits. Most do not live close enough to charging stations for this to be a practical option for us.

Those that do will quickly learn that those manufacturers that qualify to supply these vehicles will not offer discounts, selling at list price. Therefore, a chunk of the expected savings will make the car factories more profitable.

Eventually, our region will have charging stations, or one will have expensive rewiring of their home.

Because of the expensive capital costs associated with building electric

charging stations, many traditional gas stations and convenience stores will be pushed out of the market.

Who Pays For These and Other Freebies?

Of course, President Biden and his allies think citizens are too stupid to see that they would be paying for these benefits and freebies as both consumers and as taxpayers.

His plan calls for an increase in corporate taxes. His plan would raise taxes on corporations by over twenty percent. In turn, those taxes would be passed on to consumers.

For those who have wisely invested for their future in corporations, they would have to pay a second time with an additional twenty percent increase in the profits earned from those investments. This includes everyone who has any type of pension plan. That forty percent will harm the economy!

Maybe Senator Manchin can educate Virginia’s Mark Warner and Tim Kaine a little bit. Things like good economic policy is better than pandering to select groups while passing the tax bill to our children and grandchildren.

Fed WAY behind Curve, Real Rates to Remain Deeply Negative MIKE GLEASON MONEY METALS EXCHANGE

As the Federal Reserve prepares to taper its asset purchases, investors are preparing to adjust their portfolios.

Some are dumping gold.

They could be making a big mistake.

Sentiment toward precious metals turned negative as prices fell over the past few weeks. Gold and silver markets continued to slide ahead of the Federal Reserve’s policy meeting on Wednesday.

However, they got a bounce following the Fed’s announcement that it would double the pace of tapering in 2022 and raise interest rates up to three times.

PBS News Anchor: Federal Reserve officials announce that they are prepared to fight inflation with a series of interest rate hikes next year, suggesting it will begin earlier than they projected just months ago.

Jerome Powell: We are committed to our price stability goal. We will use our tools both to support the economy and a strong labor market, and to prevent higher inflation becoming entrenched.

PBS News Anchor: The Fed also announced that it will scale

back even further its efforts to stimulate the economy through major bond purchases.

The central bank may well soon begin reducing its asset purchases, but that’s not the same thing as reducing its balance sheet or the money supply. Far from it.

In reality, even after tapering, the Fed will continue to hold its existing hoard of bonds and replace them as they mature.

Recent blowout readings on the Consumer Price Index and Producer Price Index suggest the Fed is way behind the curve on tightening. It almost certainly won’t get out in front of inflation next year with three measly quarter point rate hikes.

Could the Fed’s move to taper and eventually hike rates mark a significant bottom in precious metals markets? It’s quite possible.

Naysayers claim that Fed tightening will be bad for gold and silver markets. Rising rates are a headwind for metals – or so the conventional wisdom goes.

There’s a lot of misinformation out there on the relationship between gold and interest rates. Some commentators confidently assert that higher interest rates are bullish for the U.S. dollar and therefore bearish for gold.

While that may seem logical in theory, it often

doesn’t bear out in reality.

Consider that the gold market reached its last major bottom in December 2015 at around $1,050 an ounce. That happened to coincide with the onset of a Federal Reserve rate raising campaign.

Previously, a third round of Quantitative Easing was announced in September 2012. At the time, many analysts assumed that QE3 would provide an immediate boost to gold and silver prices. Instead, the metals markets declined for several months following the Fed’s announcement.

The lesson is that precious metals markets don’t move in direct lockstep with Fed easing or tightening. Gold and silver prices show virtually no correlation to nominal interest rates.

What matters is real interest rates – meaning, rates relative to inflation. Real rates can remain negative throughout a Fed tapering and hiking campaign.

Real rates are currently at one of their most deeply negative levels on record thanks to the recent inflation spike. And yet gold and silver prices don’t seem to be responding as they should.

That’s understandably a source of frustration for precious metals holders. Some critics claim that gold no longer serves as an inflation

hedge.

But you’d have to be very short-sighted to come to that conclusion. At this time 20 years ago, gold was trading at under $300 per ounce. It’s come a long way since then as the value of the dollar has steadily declined.

Gold will continue to offer long-term inflation protection, though its ups and downs from year to year will be difficult to predict.

Inflation is here, and central bankers won’t be getting out in front of it anytime soon.

The bottom line is that if you wait for the Fed to start cutting rates again or launch a new QE program before seeking refuge in precious metals, you may miss the next big move higher.

3. To make salsa fresca: In medium bowl, mix grapefruit segments, jicama, red onion, grapefruit juice, olive oil, cilantro and jalapeno pepper until combined. Refrigerate until ready to serve.

4. Remove chicken from marinade. Place chicken in baking dish. Bake 25-30 minutes until chicken is cooked through.

5. Serve chicken with salsa fresca.

Barbara Ann Sadler Ferguson, 92, of Disputanta, passed away Tuesday, December 28, 2021. She was born on March 8, 1929, to the late Alva and Rosa Sadler and was a member of West End Baptist Church, North Dinwiddie. After many years of service as a Registered Nurse, including time in the Peace Corps serving in Bangkok, Thailand, Mrs. Ferguson retired from Southside Regional Medical Center, Petersburg. She loved animals, especially dogs and horses, and enjoyed serving her community through church activities. Mrs. Ferguson was preceded in death by her husband of 30 years, Col. James W. Ferguson; and six siblings. She is survived by her children, Jennifer F. Mize (Jerry) and Charles L. Ferguson (Kimberly); grandchildren, Austin and Grayson Ferguson, Jerry Mize II (Matthew Smith), and Sarah C. Andrews; and great-grandchildren, David W. Andrews Jr., and Kathryn and Miriana Smith. A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, January 4, 2022, at West End Baptist Church, 6506 Boydton Plank Road, North Dinwiddie, Virginia 23803 with Rev. Mark Hughes and Rev. Tim Brindle officiating. The family will receive guests beginning at 12 noon, one hour prior to the service. Interment will follow at Southlawn Memorial Park, S. Prince George. Mr. Shelton G. Dennis, “Woodney” of Hopewell passed away on Monday, December 27, 2021 at McGuire Veterans Hospital.

Shelton grew up in Hopewell and graduated from Carter G. Woodson School. He entered the Army in 1951 and served his country in the Korean War. He later, married his high school sweetheart, Mary Catherine Lee and they raised one daughter, LaEunice.

A quiet caring man whom was respected by many started each day with a cup of coffee and a newspaper. He was a baseball fan and loves watching his grandson, Trevor play ball.

Shelton was one of the first African American men to establish a successful business in Hopewell. He provided automotive services for over 30 years at Dennis Gulf Service Station.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 56 years, Mary Catherine (Lee); parents, Sarah Dennis Tucker and father, Howard Dennis; brothers, Frank, Santee, Joseph, Andrew, Freddie, Edward and sisters, Queen Ester and Eva. Beloved Wife, Mother, Grandmother, Great-Grandmother and Great Great Grandmother On December 26, 2021, Rosa King, a soul filled with grace, peacefully went to her heavenly home at the age of 91. Born in Charles City, Virginia on April 22, 1930, as the eldest daughter of Samuel Jones and Etta Jones B. Creighton, Rosa graduated from Ruthville High School and Riverside School of Nursing. As a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN), she would go on to become an accomplished Dental Technician at the Fort Lee Dental Clinic, Fort Lee Virginia where she worked until her retirement.

At a young age, Rosa began her walk of faith at Parish Hill Baptist Church in Charles City, Virginia. After marrying her love, Edward King in 1951, she joined Harrison Grove Baptist Church in Prince George, Virginia. Throughout her life, she extended tender love, compassion and caring for all the lives she touched.

Rosa spent her final years living in Northern Virginia. Two years were spent in her daughter’s home, and for the last eight months she lived at Paramount Senior Living Center. She enjoyed her residence at Paramount and the staff, just like us, loved her very much and provided her with outstanding care.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was predeceased by two sisters, Hilda Bowman and Betty Charlotte; two brothers

James Bowman Jr. and Edward Bowman Sr. and a loving granddaughter, Renee King Barnes.

Born on April 21, 1957 in Petersburg Virginia, he was the son of the late Eva Motley and Willard Ollie Dortch, Sr., and was also preceded in death by his first wife, Janet Dabney Dortch; and his beloved maternal grandparents, Charles and Ida Motely.

Willard was a member of the Southside Church of the Nazarene Chester Campus.

A United States Marine veteran, he proudly served his country for two years. He was a member of the American Legion Post 284.

More than 725 people have been arrested in all 50 states on federal charges stemming from violence that erupted at the U.S. Capitol Jan. 6, leading some 165 people to plead guilty—mostly to misdemeanor charges—the U.S. Department of Justice said Thursday in its year-end summary.

Seventy-five defendants were charged with entering a restricted area with a dangerous or deadly weapon.

“Under the continued leadership of the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Columbia and the FBI’s Washington Field Office, the investigation and prosecution of those responsible for the attack continues to move forward at an unprecedented speed and scale,” the DOJ said in a statement. “The Department of Justice’s resolve to hold accountable those who committed crimes on Jan. 6, 2021 has not, and will not, wane.”

The approximately 725 arrests have led 145 defendants to plead guilty to misdemeanors, while 20 pleaded guilty to felonies. Six of the felony guilty pleas involved assaults on law enforcement, the report said.

Those charges were brought because the U.S. House and Senate were in session to certify electoral votes from the 2020 presidential election when violence broke out. Lawmakers were evacuated and work was suspended during the worst violence, although the session continued after 8 p.m. on Jan. 6.

Some 40 people were charged with conspiracy to obstruct a congressional proceeding, conspiracy to obstruct law enforcement during civil disorder, conspiracy to injure an officer, or some combination of those charges, the report noted.

Seventy federal defendants have been sentenced for their actions on Jan. 6, including 31 who received jail or prison time. Eighteen people were sentenced to home detention.

The balance of those sentenced were not incarcerated, the report said.

Ten arrests were made for assaults on members of the news media or destruction of their equipment on Jan. 6, the DOJ said.

The FBI still asks the public’s help to identify more than 350 people believed to have committed violent acts at the Capitol, including more than 250 who assaulted police officers, the DOJ report said.

Five defendants accused of plotting to kidnap Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer have filed a motion to dismiss the charges against them, claiming that the hand that FBI informants had in directing the failed scheme amounts to entrapment.

The trial of Adam Fox, Barry Croft, Kaleb Franks, Daniel Harris, and Brandon Caserta is set to begin March 8, 2022, for allegedly conspiring throughout 2020 to kidnap Whitmer. A sixth person, Ty Garbin, pleaded guilty to the allegations in August and was sentenced to six years in prison while agreeing to serve as a witness against his co-defendants.

Fox, Croft, Franks, Harris, and Caserta have maintained throughout the proceedings that the government set them up. They formalized those arguments in a Dec. 25 motion to dismiss, saying the evidence in the case “demonstrates egregious overreaching by the government’s agents, and by the informants those agents handled.”

“When the government was faced with evidence showing that the defendants had no interest in a kidnapping plot, it refused to accept failure and continued to push its plan,” the

motion states. A Buzzfeed News investigation from July found that the FBI used at least 12 informants involved with the kidnapping—suggesting that the scheme might not have started in the first place without the FBI. “Because the government overreached and committed serious acts of misconduct against defendants who had repudiated the government’s suggested wrongdoing, the defense can establish entrapment as a matter of law,” the motion states.

The defendants’ 20-page motion offers numerous examples to support their claim.

For instance, multiple defendants and others were allegedly together on July 7, 2020, when someone suggested kidnapping Whitmer. According to the motion, someone in the group immediately said they were “not cool with offensive kidnapping”—a sentiment echoed by Franks and Harris.

On July 18, 2020, Garbin purportedly rebuffed an FBI informant’s suggestion of kidnapping a public official.

“Garbin said, ‘So, I think an objective to go for is not the kidnapping,’” the motion states.

mant] and others: ‘No snatch and grab. I swear to [expletive] God.’” The defendants’ motion also includes testimony from an FBI agent who allegedly said during discovery that defendants had a “negative reaction” to proposals from informants to kidnap Whitmer.

Additionally, the motion included examples of what defendants say was “emotional manipulation” by FBI informants to entice them into staying involved with the scheme.

One FBI informant allegedly used his untreated hernia as a device to gain sympathy with Fox and others.

“He claimed that the V.A. [Department of Veterans Affairs] would not provide him proper treatment after his years of combat service in the Army. ... [The FBI informant] would tell Adam Fox that he was ‘waiting to die,’” the motion states.

“Feeling the emotional pull of such a confession, Adam Fox told Dan that Dan needed to get surgical treatment as a priority over any of the ‘mission plans’ Dan, in his [FBI informant] role, was pushing.”

These examples and others are more than enough to meet the entrapment threshold, the defendants argue. Their motion includes examples where other

In that case, the Supreme Court said government agents “may not originate a criminal design, implant in an innocent person’s mind the disposition to commit a criminal act, and then induce commission of the crime so that the Government may prosecute.”

Defendants in the Whitmer case argued that the FBI agents’ conduct was more egregious than the Jacobson case.

“In the case at hand, in sharp contrast, informants, of course, not only contacted the defendants face to face but also coaxed, persuaded, cajoled, played on sympathies, cultivated friendships, took advantage of the defendants’ financial conditions, and suggested that the offense they proposed ‘would further a greater good,’” the motion states.

“The defendants did not engage in any activity for profit— anything they did with respect to the [FBI informants] was based on friendship and admiration and the [informants’] assiduous cultivation of a sense of patriotism and right-doing.”

The government has until Jan. 24, 2022, to respond to the defendants’ motion. A final pretrial conference is set for Feb. 18.

Inflation and Supply Chains: Saying Goodbye to 2021, Looking to 2022 ANDREW MORAN

The world is turning the page on 2021 and welcoming 2022, leading to an assessment of the past 12 months and looking ahead to the next 365 days.

Over the past year, the economy was dominated by a handful of developments: inflation, a global supply chain crisis, the Delta and Omicron coronavirus variants, trillions of dollars in fiscal spending, and the easing of monetary policy.

Firms have millions of job vacancies to fill, so competition to find workers with the right skill set will remain intense.

James Knightley, chief international economist, Think ING In November, the U.S. annual inflation rate rose to 6.8 percent, a 39-year high. The personal consumption expenditure (PCE) price index, the Federal Reserve’s favorite inflation gauge, climbed by 5.7 percent, the highest increase in nearly 40 years.

Official inflation data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) show that higher prices are being felt across the board, from food to energy to consumer goods.

The year 2021 might have provided a different Christmas shopping experience than what many shoppers are accustomed to at this time of the year. Whether it was a scarcity of products or surging prices, the international supply chain crisis affected the holiday season in 2021.

A historic traffic jam at Chinese and U.S. ports, a backlog of shipping containers, public health restrictions, a truck driver shortage, and soaring simultaneous worldwide demand all contributed to shoppers altering their gift-giving plans. But the supply chain fiasco has affected more than just buying a child’s favorite toy.

The situation has added to the energy crunch witnessed across

Europe and Asia, forcing these markets to ramp up coal production and eat into their crude strategic reserves.

The U.S. labor market has been a mixed bag in 2021.

The U.S. economy is still short between 4 and 6 million jobs from before the COVID-19 pandemic, though job openings are close to an all-time high of 11 million. Average hourly earnings increased at an annualized rate of 4.8 percent in November to 31.03, but real wage growth has been eliminated in most sectors due to escalating inflation. Firsttime jobless claims are at a pandemic low, while the labor force participation rate is at a 45-year low of 61.8 percent.

The financial markets panicked when the World Health Organization (WHO) called an emergency meeting to discuss a new COVID-19 variant.

Many analysts warned that a new strain could weigh on the economic outlook, be it retail trade activity or crude oil demand.

While the Delta variant has affected the economy in 2021, Omicron has triggered some consternation about the global economic recovery during the year’s home stretch. Public health experts assert that it’s still too early to judge the severity of Omicron, but investors and policymakers have been worried, leading to sharp selloffs in financial markets and to renewed pandemic-related restrictions.

Across the globe, central banks have started to taper their quantitative easing measures that were established to cushion the economic blows from COVID-19.

The Federal Reserve began trimming its $120-billion-permonth stimulus and relief efforts, with the Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) also anticipating at least three rate hikes in 2022.

The Bank of Canada, Bank of England (BoE), and European Central Bank joined the tapering bandwagon. However, BoE moved on interest rates before many of its Western counterparts, hiking the benchmark rate to 0.25 percent and surprising many market observers.

President Joe Biden also signed off on a measure raising the debt ceiling by $2.5 trillion.

Although the House voted for the $1.75 trillion social-spending and climate change investment Build Back Better Act, the legislation’s future is in jeopardy in the Senate. Sen. Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.) said he wouldn’t vote for the measure, leaving many left-leaning officials on Capitol Hill doubtful that it will make its way to the president’s desk in the New Year.

Despite the numerous setbacks in the United States, surveys suggest that the economic recovery might be poised for a strong finish in 2021.

Durable goods orders surged at a better-than-expected 2.5 percent, new home sales advanced by 12.4 percent in November, and the Conference Board’s Consumer Confidence Index climbed much higher than what the market had expected: 115.8 versus 110.8.

“The American economy is closing out 2021 on a high note,” TD Economics wrote in a research note.

From Omicron variant fears to Biden’s $1.75 trillion spending initiative potentially on its knees, financial institutions have lowered their 2022 economic outlooks.

Goldman Sachs was one of the first major Wall Street firms to slash its forecasts for the U.S. economy over the next year, citing “modest downside” from the new variant.

The Wall Street giant projects that the U.S. gross domestic product will expand by 2.9 percent in 2022, down from its previous estimate of 3.3 percent.

CDC Sued for Withholding Post-Licensure V-safe Data on COVID-19 Vaccines KATABELLA ROBERTS

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has been sued by the Informed Consent Action Network (ICAN), which claims the agency is improperly withholding COVID-19 v-safe data from the American public.

In a statement on Dec. 29, the non-profit group said it had filed a lawsuit against the public health agency and the United States Department of Health and Human Services to force it to produce de-identified postlicensure safety data for the COVID-19 vaccines in the CDC’s v-safe system, to the public.

As per the CDC, v-safe is an “active surveillance program to monitor the safety of COVID-19 vaccines during the period when the vaccines are authorized for use under Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Emergency Use Authorization (EUA) and possibly early after vaccine licensure.”

Through the app, vaccine recipients can inform the agency about any side effects they have suffered after getting the COVID-19 shots.

Informed Consent Action Network data from its v-safe system available to the private computer technology company, Oracle, in de-identified form, meaning that personal identifying information has been retracted.

This data “will be collected, managed, and housed on a secure server by Oracle,” the CDC says. “Through Health and Human Services (HHS), Oracle has donated IT services to any agency conducting COVID-19 related activities ... All data will be stored, processed, and transmitted in accordance with the Federal Information Security Modernization Act (FISMA) and based on NIST standards.”

However, ICAN wants the CDC to produce that same deidentified data to the general public to assure transparency regarding the CDC’s and the Biden administration’s claims

that COVID-19 vaccines are “safe and effective.”

“The FDA and CDC have now made crystal clear that their promise of transparency with regard to COVID-19 vaccines was hogwash,” ICAN said in Wednesday’s statement.

The Food and Drug Administration has asked a judge to give it 75 years to produce data concerning the Pfizer and BioNTech vaccine, having previously asked to give it until the year 2076 to fully release the documents.

“As everyone now knows, the FDA has asked a federal judge to give it at least 75 years to produce the pre-authorization/licensure safety data. And we now know with certainty, federal health authorities similarly want to hide the post-authorization/licensure safety data,” ICAN said.

“Based on the CDC’s own documentation, the data submitted to v-safe is already available in de-identified form (with no personal health information) and could be immediately released to the public,” ICAN said.

The non-profit group, through its attorneys, asked in

three Freedom of Information requests that the CDC produce the de-identified data, to which the health agency acknowledged that “v-safe data contains approximately 119 million medical entries” but declined to produce it because the “information in the app is not de-identified.”

However, the third request was administratively closed by the CDC, which claimed it was a duplicate of the original request, which was denied.

“The first request was denied by the CDC because the CDC claimed it requested data that was de-identified when entered into the app, but then the CDC closed the second request (which was identical to the first request except for making clear it was seeking data deidentified at any point—before or after it was entered into the app) by claiming the second request was duplicative of the first request! The CDC is plainly playing games. It clearly does not want the v-safe data released,” ICAN said.

The Epoch Times has contacted the CDC and the Department of Health and Human Services for comment.

ICAN said it believes that members of the public should “have immediate access to all vsafe data in de-identified form,” particularly in light of the fact that the Biden administration is mandating vaccines to millions of Americans.

“Despite the fact that this deidentified data already exists, that it is already in the hands of a private company, and that the CDC has never objected to its production, the CDC has so far failed to produce it to ICAN or to the American public—the same people being mandated to take this liability-free product,” ICAN said.

“But don’t worry, ICAN will not rest until this data is made public and so today has commenced a lawsuit against the CDC and HHS demanding that a court compel them to release this data,” ICAN added.

ICAN was founded by Del Bigtree in 2016. Earlier this year, the organization filed a lawsuit against the CDC to request the federal agency take down its statement that claims vaccines do not cause autism from its webpage on autism and vaccines.
