Hopewell PD Works to Respond to Rising Crime HOPEWELL

HOPEWELL– Crime is on the uptick in Hopewell, with armed robberies, home invasions, shootings, and even homicide rising. A list of recent events includes a strong armed robbery in the 1500 block of Edward Bland Court, an armed robbery reported in the 3300 block of Oaklawn Boulevard, a July 4th incident on Cedar Level, verified shots reported on Edward Bland Court, and shots with injuries on 13th Avenue on June 28th. And the list goes on.

While Hopewell Police Chief A.J. Starke admits he’s aware of these dangers, he explains that it’s not just in Hopewell. “It’s across the region,” the chief notes. “And really this level of crime is spreading even further.”

According to the Federal Bureau of Investigations, there were an estimated 366.7 violent crimes per 100,000 inhabitants in 2019.

Aggravated assaults accounted for 68.2 percent of violent crimes reported to law enforcement in 2019.

Robbery offenses accounted for 22.3 percent of violent crime offenses; rape accounted for 8.2 percent; and murder accounted for 1.4 percent. In the FBI’s

Uniform Crime Reporting (UCR) Program, violent crime is composed of four offenses: murder and manslaughter, rape, robbery, and aggravated assault. Violent crimes are defined in the UCR Program as those offenses that involve force or threat of force.

“Sadly, we continue to hear of shootings all around our nation,” Virginia State Senator Frank Ruff, 15th District, said. “I wish that there was a solution so simple, but there is not. The issues are complicated with no simple and easy answer.”

It’s become a sad national trend, the reason for which is difficult to pinpoint.

“We’re not sure if it’s jobs or poverty or what is behind the cause,” Starke acknowledged.

That doesn’t mean the police aren’t willing to stand against the crime spree.

From patrol officers to investigators, HPD is working to prevent and find the perpetrators of crime.

In fact, the chief proudly reported that a patrol officer found stolen weapons after pulling over a vehicle; that discovery helped solve some of Hopewell’s unsolved crimes. While the driver had many tools, including saws, in the vehicle, the officer continued his search through them all until the

stolen guns were found.

Stolen firearms are a problem Hopewell is battling, with some reported missing, often out of unlocked vehicles, and some that are never reported missing.

To continue their progressive investigation programs, Starke has proposed a parttime position to investigate cold cases, as well as support active investigations into serious crimes. He hopes the position will bring fresh eyes and experience to the force.

“We want someone with a driven track record,” he said. “I think it’s a positive for the community from CONTINUED ON PAGE 3

Members of city council considered the position but initially voted against the funding for it. Mayor Patience Bennet explained that she wasn’t against the new officer but didn’t feel it was fair to cut all departments’ budgets 10 percent across the board while providing funding for a new job. Councilor Brenda Pelham took a different position, saying that the families of victims should be considered because of the need for closure.

“How would you feel if that was your daughter?” she asked councilors. ”I think

this is a position that I think is needed.”

The position was reconsidered at the July 12th council meeting and approved.

Starke admits the department can’t put cases to rest without the support of the community. He requests that residents notify police if they see any strange activity, even something as small as a strange vehicle driving around the neighborhood.

“If you see something, say something,” he says.

Starke and Hopewell police officers are working to connect to neighborhoods through many outreach programs, including the Good to Great initiative that the new chief introduced to touch base with the city’s youth through fun and challeng-

ing activities. Just recently, the teens involved in the program participated in an obstacle course challenge where they fought their fears on a rope swinging obstacle and other courses. Starke says it’s a team building experience during which they learn to work together and support each other.

“Our goal is to teach these teens to choose good choices knowing that bad choices result in bad consequences,” Starke said. “This grows relationships and we hope they take with them [the knowledge] that if they choose to hang out with those who are about to make bad choices they can choose not to be there.”

After the obstacle course in Midlothian, the Hopewell

youth returned and worked together to build a picnic table. “They all did a great job and the table turned out great. It’s amazing to see kids come in as strangers and grow relationships while they become a team and overcome their fears with the help of new friends.”

Willing to take advice for ways to reach out, Starke is always standing by to serve the community and solve crimes; but he can’t do it alone.

“It’s not just me, it’s the entire police department working with localities across the region and Crime Solvers,” he concluded. “Help us help you. We’re all here to better Hopewell, now and into the future.”

Trail Blazing & Street Modernization CH Approves Smart Scale Project Applications Totaling $21 Million

COLONIAL HEIGHTS— With the application window for the next round of Smart Scale funding currently open, the Colonial Heights City Council approved multiple resolutions for funding applications at its last regular meeting, held on Tuesday, July 12th. With the passage of those resolutions, the City of Colonial Heights will apply for $21 million in Smart Scale grant funding for multiple public works projects.

Those particular projects are: 1) Lakeview Modernization Phase II (Brijadan Lane to Lakeview Park Drive); 2) Boulevard Modernization (Temple Avenue to Essex Road); 3) Appomattox River Greenway Trail Boulevard Spur (Trail Phase IV to Archer Avenue); and 4) Appomattox River Greenway Trail Phase

Phase II of the Lakeview Modernization project would add a new central lane along with two travel lanes and four-foot paved shoulders. The stretch of road would also receive

new curbs and a gutter drainage system, as well as ADA-compliant sidewalks on both sides of the roadway.

The Boulevard Modernization project includes the construction of new fivefoot wide sidewalks with

curbs and gutters, also ADA-compliant.

The requested grant funding totals $21.1 million for all four projects with the Lakeview Modernization Phase II alone costing $13,799,653.

City council’s actions during the July 12th meeting also approved an application for Smart Scale grant funding by the Tri-Cities Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO) to the Commonwealth Transportation Board for an Appo-

mattox River Trail (ART) project that would carry the ART from Petersburg to Colonial Heights and Chesterfield. The trailhead project, which would not be funded or administered by the city, includes constructing a shared use path and bridge across the Appomattox River, providing a scenic and safe connection from the Appomattox Greenway Trail to Petersburg’s regional trail system at no cost to Colonial Heights.

She holds a Bachelor of Business Management from Charleston Southern University and a Bachelor of Arts from Barton College. She officially steps into the role on Friday, July 29th, but Burket will receive a much lower salary than her predecessor.

She has requested that her salary be lowered to $90,000 annually and the difference be distributed to other staff members in the assessors office to bring their pay up to par with surrounding localities.

Homegrown Winners Poised to Open Up Shop HOPEWELL

HOPEWELL— The city has seen a recent exodus of local businesses from the downtown area, but that is not stopping would-be business owners from opening new ones.

The Hopewell Downtown Partnership (HDP) has been assisting startup businesses in the downtown historic district for years and continues to press forward with that mission despite the recent setbacks.

In early 2022, the HDP relaunched Homegrown for Hopewell, a new business incubator program and business pitch competition. Three new businesses were recently announced, each awarded top prizes primarily funded by a Community Business Launch grant from the Virginia Department of Housing and Community Development.

The three winners of this year’s competition are an ice cream and burger restaurant, a small-scale food production incuba-

tor, and a salon. A total of $40,000 in gap funding was awarded to the businesses, $10,000 of which was provided by the city. Also included in the prize package is a oneyear membership to the Hopewell-Prince George Chamber of Commerce as well as leasing incentives from local property owners and continued counseling and technical support from HDP and other business owners in a collective effort to “strengthen the region’s entrepreneurial ecosystem”, according to the HDP. HDP received 109 total applications for the grant program, thirty of which moved forward to the preliminary pitch. Ultimately, twelve finalists competed at the Guncotton Gallery before a panel of judges: Tanner Collins, Executive Director at BizWorks Enterprise Center; Matt Ho, SBA Business Development Officer and Vice President for Primis Bank; Toria Edmonds-Howell, Community Engagement CONTINUED ON PAGE 8

Fire, EMS Museum Could be Open and Ready for Visitors in Months PRINCE GEORGE

PRINCE GEORGE – The Museum of the Volunteer Fire Departments and Emergency Crew in Prince George has been on the books and in planning stages for years.

The Prince George Regional Heritage Center’s newest museum building, the historic Old Jail (which later served as the county food bank) is being readied to house a tribute to the volunteer fire and emergency crews that have served the county for many years.

Architectural/engineering drawings are in the final stages and Riggs-Ward Design of Richmond is working with museum staff to ensure accurate and quality presentation for this new project.

After being in the planning process since 2015, the building is ready to go.

There’s just one thing needed to get the plan underway– money, to the tune of $100,000.

update on the building at a recent Board of Supervisors work session explaining, “The building is ready and we have done everything we can to make it be restored.

“If we can move on the project, I believe we can get it done very quickly,” Bowman explained.

The goal is to get the space ready, especially the bay area that will house the county’s first fire engine, a Seagrave bought from another locality, in time for the Czech-Slovak festival in October.

The Seagrave is the very first fire truck used by the Prince George County Volunteer Fire Department.

It was acquired from Federal Government surplus in 1953 and originally served at a U.S. Navy base. After its retirement from use, the 1943 Seagrave pumper, which has a pump rated at 1,000 gallons per minute, was parked outside behind one of the volunteer department member’s homes for many years, becoming severely deteriorated. It was eventually sold to a member of the Old Dominion Historical Fire Society, who

began the restoration, Bowman noted.

After a few years, the owner came to realize the restoration was beyond his ability and placed the rig up for sale. The volunteers at Prince George decided that they wanted it back as a historical piece and re-acquired it. Due to the condition of the rig at that time, professional help was needed.

Many fundraisers ensued and the engine was sent to a restoration shop in North Carolina, returning home in like-new condition; it is now a permanent artifact of the county’s history.

Bowman believes the museum will be not only educational but also fun, attracting families from across both the local area and from other states.

“This is a great use of tourism funds,’’ Bowman said.

“It will draw people from all over and certainly attract local people and be a fun place for children to learn and enjoy.”

can tour the old fire engine and learn about fire safety and first aid. Though there is not an old ambulance from the county’s history, Bowman says the Heritage Center is planning to create an ambulance replica that

children can tour.

“Maybe we can give them a stethoscope and let them go in to take someone’s blood pressure,” she said, clearly excited at the opportunity for creativity the program would provide.

While display visions are being developed, there are

still some construction determinations to be made.

The county is currently working on the “arcade” roof. After receiving new gutters, the building seems secure and is clear of any leaks, with Bowman pointing out that the walls are dry.

County Administrator Jeff Stoke said the roof of the Old Jail will not need to be replaced- a significant saving to the project with replacement cost estimated at $900,000.

“If that’s the case, I can support this,” Supervisor TJ Webb (District 2) said.

With experience in setting and reaching similar goals in the past, the Heritage Center will manage the project and its funding directly, Stoke explained. “If the board decides to provide funding it will be a one-time lump fee for the Heritage Center, and they will make decisions on the project.”

At the July 12th Board of Supervisors meeting, the board unanimously approved the appropriation of $100,000 of tourism funding for the Fire & EMS Museum, giving the greenlight for completion of the unique project.

There’s an easy spot to go for take out or even to call for delivery.

It’s Lunch Break, a new restaurant that recently opened on 15th Avenue where other dine-in places have come and gone like Pasta Dinner and 15th Street Barbecue. But owner Dixie O’Hare and partner Pete Lewis feel like they have the right recipe, with just boxed lunches, charcuterie boards, boxed kids lunches, and tasty homemade desserts- all in personal, family, and party sizes.

It’s a different concept, with no dine-in option, only pick-up and delivery.

“But we saw the need here for different lunch options,” she said while working their lunch program. They feature a changing weekly menu offering cold sandwiches. unique sides, and even hot soups.

They are hoping to expand their service through schools, government offices, industry, and any companies that may host conferences or just want to treat their employees.

“We will provide lunch boxes to workers, office employees, and school children. We will offer basic, standard, and premium packages,” O’Hare explained. “We’re open at

lunch time, which we think is the best time to reach many different businesses and any small or large organizations.”

Both Lewis and O’Hare wanted to provide something new to the area, and the current location on 15th Avenue was the perfect place after they searched in Prince George, Petersburg, and Colonial Heights.

“It’s a good fit for us,” Lewis said.

The two, along with O’Hare’s daughter Kieran, man the business. Kieran, a PGHS graduate and mother of one, enjoys serving customers at the window as well as making deliveries.

The unique business model takes into account lessons learned from the pandemic restrictions. It’s a secure area so if there are future shut down rules,

people can come to the window to order and pick up lunch so there is no exposure to others. “Since Covid people have adapted different ways of eating, and either cook at home or pick up something to go.”

So the two partners opted to steer away from dine-in.

They are open to expanding their options if the restaurant clientele grows,

but for now their current process will continue, open Monday through Friday, 10am to 4pm, with pick up window open 11am to noon.

“We wanted to do things simpler than I have in the past,” the owner said. “It’s small enough and easier to manage and handle.”

Petersburg City Attorney Receives Governor Appointment PETERSBURG STAFF REPORT LNNUSA.com

PETERSBURG- Petersburg’s city attorney, Anthony “Tony” Williams was recently appointed to the Criminal Justice Services Board for the Commonwealth of Virginia by Governor Glenn Youngkin.

“In my years of service to the Commonwealth and Virginia localities, I have and continue to work closely with our law enforcement officers,” said Williams.

The Criminal Justice Services Board is made up of thirty-two members.

Those members represent all aspects of the criminal justice system, private security, representatives in the General Assembly, and the general public.

“The Board is the approving authority for regulations DCJS promulgates pursuant to the Code of Virginia and the Administrative Process Act, and

it approves most of the grants DCJS awards to localities, state agencies and private non-profit organizations,” Williams stated.

Williams’s appointment

to the board is for a fouryear term and will expire in June of 2026. Other local leaders currently on the Criminal Justice Services Board include Chesterfield

Police Chief Jeffrey Katz, who was appointed simultaneously with Williams, and State Senator Joe Morrissey.

RICHMOND- Twenty-seven of Virginia’s localities will soon be launching new tourism initiatives geared towards giving their economies a boost. Over 1200 community and business leaders across the Commonwealth participated in the creation of the new program through the Virginia Tourism Corporation’s DRIVE 2.0 state tourism planning workshops. Governor Glenn Youngkin announced the initiative on Monday, July 18th, highlighting that over one hundred new tourism programs had been formed in Virginia as a result. The Covid-19 pandemic drastically impacted tourism in the state as well as nationally and internationally, and state leaders hope that the new tourism program will help return Virginia’s tourism to more normal levels. In the Tri-Cities area, Petersburg, Hopewell, and Prince George are participating in the new initiative.

“Bus Boxes” Bring Creative Solution to Delivery Demand STAFF REPORT LNNUSA.com

RICHMOND- A group of middle school students in the Richmond area has created an inventive solution to two problems: the part-time nature of school bus driving and the growing demand for delivery drivers.

Clueless Robotics, the robotics team for Saint Bridget Catholic School, invented the bus box, a storage compartment that fits underneath school buses between the front and back wheels. Each bus can accommodate two of the Bus Boxes, one on either side, and they would be filled with packages out for delivery from companies like Amazon. Bus drivers often only work part-time because they are only needed to drive at the beginning and end of each school day, but Bus Boxes would allow them to reach full-time work by delivering the packages their bus is carrying to pick-up lockers in their area after completing

Honors Continue for Cavaliers PETERSBURG

PETERSBURG – After winning the franchise’s first ECBL Championship, the 2022 champion Petersburg Cavaliers racked up several additional honors to end the season.

Coach Kyle Dixon was named the 2022 ECBL South Coach of the Year. Dixon led his team to this year’s ECBL Championship, posting a 16-1 record. He won Coach of the Year honors in 2016 and 2019 as well. Dixon was also selected to his second time as an ECBL All-Star Game head coach.

Cavs forward Walter Williams was named the ECBL Finals MVP. Forward Tavon Mealy was named as the league’s Sixth Man of the Year. Both Williams and Mealy were joined by forward Elijah Moore in being selected to the 2022 All-Star team. The Cavaliers team was also named the ECBL’s top defensive team of the

year.

In addition to securing the team’s first ECBL championship, the Cavaliers remained undefeated at home for the second year in a row.

Local leaders voiced the importance of the team to the Tri-Cities area. Senator Joe Morrissey said that Coach Kyle Dixon and the Cavaliers “do Petersburg proud”. Delegate Kim Taylor added, “They have always

represented Petersburg and the Tri-Cities so well.” Both Senator Morrissey and Delegate Taylor were instrumental in helping the Cavaliers make the trip to Connecticut for their final game of the season.

Petersburg Mayor Sam Parham called the team the “heartbeat of Petersburg”, stating that basketball has been electrifying in Petersburg. VSU President Makola

Abdullah emphasized that it was awesome watching VSU graduates playing at the next level. He enjoyed the development he saw in them and the fantastic quality of the skill sets on the floor.

The championship run generated a new excitement for the Petersburg-based semipro basketball franchise, a momentum Dixon hopes to build on for the 2023 season.

Peppers Neck-and-Neck with Rival Pilots COLONIAL HEIGHTS

COLONIAL HEIGHTSAfter losing five games in a row, the Tri-City Chili Peppers finally managed to break the losing streak and bring home a 7-4 win in Friday, July 15th’s away game against the Martinsville Mustangs. But they weren’t able to build any momentum, losing their home game against division leaders the Morehead City Marlins the next night, Saturday, July 16th.

While the Peppers weren’t able to pull off the win, the game was close, ending 10-9. But a rematch against the Marlins in Morehead City the following night wasn’t so close, and the Marlins were able to keep the Peppers at bay, 9-2.

On Monday, July 18th, the Peppers travelled to Hampton to face their instate rival, the Peninsula Pilots. The Pilots sat just one spot below the Peppers in the division rankings after a 10-3 win in that game.

Going into a rematch a few days later, the Peppers were 18-20 for the season, and the Pilots 18-21. But on Thursday, July 21st, the Peppers overcame a first hit home run by the Pilots, going on to defeat the Peninsula team 10-4 and slightly widening the gap between the two rivals.

The Chili Peppers head into the weekend with a double header against the Wilson Tobs on Friday, July 22nd, and a Sunday, July 24th matchup against the Morehead City Marlins.

Grand Larceny at Harrowgate Market Place: 1985 | July 18, 2022 On April 16, 2022, a Black male suspect entered the Harrowgate Market Place in Chesterfield County. The suspect was seen tampering with the gaming machines and went behind the counter where he took over $1,000 out of the cash register.

The suspect left the store in a small red Kia sedan with black wheels. The license plate on the suspect vehicle is registered to an owner who is not the suspect in the surveillance footage.

15TH SENATE DISTRICT I wish I was as upbeat about inflation as President Biden’s spokespeople.

The June report showed a 9.1% increase over the last year, declared the highest inflation in forty years. The President’s folks quickly pointed out that gasoline prices were 40 cents less than a month ago. Most of us understand that gasoline

is still 96% higher than a year ago. Those who have gone to the grocery store in the last six months look at that 9.1% figure and wonder how that could be.

Everything they buy is far more, from meat to beans to peanut butter. Instead of everybody talking about their own favorite statistics, we should look at the true facts.

Consumer Price Index

Prior to 1980, inflation was based on the cost of buying one of everything. Since none of us buy everything every month or even ev-

ery year, Congress made changes to how the inflation is calculated, therefore, in 1980, they changed the formula calculated each month. Some change made sense, others not so much.

One area where everyone makes multiple purchases monthly is groceries.

Consider these changes: steak in January 2021 was about $11, June 2022 about the same, bacon up 27%, coffee up 27%, eggs up 75%, chicken breasts 40%, ground beef 23%, bread 9%. This is a sampling of items over seventeen

months, but it shows you that true inflation is higher than reported.

Some Factors

Many factors can create shortages that tend to drive the prices of items. As an example, when Covid struck, many businesses were forced to stop production. During that period, lumber prices skyrocketed.

Loggers couldn’t harvest while workers who couldn’t go to work decided to do home projects. Likewise, car manufacturers were unable to get computer chips needed in all new vehicles, CONTINUED ON PAGE 27

Government Related Factors

The biggest factor in all inflation is always the government! Government likes to spend money. At the state and local levels, spending is limited to tax receipts. The federal government is not.

They spend if the president and Congress can agree.

When Covid began and businesses were closing, it made sense to send checks out to everyone, however, once that immediate problem was addressed, commonsense should have kicked in. It didn’t! The feds continued to send checks out indiscriminately. Those who continued to work got checks, those on pensions who had lost no

income continued to receive government checks.

The result of all that extra money resulted in situations like the home projects mentioned above that helped drive up the cost of lumber.

This extra income increased the demand for many other items while manufacturing was limited; this drove up prices.

At the same time, state and local governments were passing laws requiring private employers to pay higher wages without an expectation that a worker produce more for that salary. This alone drove up the price of every item, small businesses especially, sold.

As everyone has seen, when President Biden came into office he immediately took executive actions to cut off the supply of fossil fuels from exploration and

shipments to refineries. In addition, he created more layers of regulation negatively effecting producers.

This signaled to the world that America’s highest priority was not reasonably priced energy. OPEC and Russia began raising prices.

American producers were forced to compete with their hands tied. Meanwhile, investors shied away from investing in the long-term capital needed for increasing production.

Who Wins With Inflation

I mentioned only a few reasons how government creates inflation, but the dirty secret is that government loves inflation. When they force personal income higher, it accomplishes several goals. Those who get raises are happy they got a raise. They are, at least, un-

til they realize cost of living is also rising. Meanwhile, as one’s income rises, their payroll and sales tax obligations rise. This in turn gives government more money to spend on projects they perceive as important.

Slowing Inflation

Slowing inflation is far more painful than it was in creating the problem. The Federal Reserve Bank is in the process of doing that now by raising interest rates. The last time they took drastic action was in the 1980s; interest rates went to eighteen percent.

Welcome to this week’s Market Wrap Podcast, I’m Mike Gleason. Another pair of alarming inflation reports jolted markets this week.

On Wednesday, the Consumer Price Index came in at a 9.1% annual rate. The higher-than-expected reading puts the CPI at a new 41-year high.

The biggest contributors to rising consumer prices are the basic necessities of food, fuel, and shelter. As households struggle to make ends meet, they are trimming discretionary spending, burning through savings, and running up credit card balances.

Businesses are also getting squeezed. On Thursday, the Producer Price Index showed wholesale costs rising at a massive 11.3% year-over-year.

These are all major warning signs for the economy.

As both businesses and consumers are forced to tighten their belts, a slowdown looms.

And if the Federal Reserve makes another major policy misstep, then a severe recession and financial crisis may also be coming. The Fed seems committed to hiking interest rates until something breaks and forces policymakers to pivot.

They are expected to deliver another 75 basis-point rate hike later this month.

The latest inflation reports have some Fed watchers saying that a massive 100-point rate increase is now on the table.

Rising interest rates are causing the U.S. dollar to spike versus foreign currencies. A strengthening fiat dollar achieved parity with the euro for the first time in 20 years.

That, in turn, is putting downward pressure on metals markets.

Trading algorithms interpret a rising dollar index as cause to put in sell orders for gold and silver. Of course, the U.S. currency has been rapidly declining in real purchasing power terms. But for now, inflation hedges are being sold off along with stocks, bonds,

and cryptocurrencies.

The yellow metal has been under significant pressure in recent days, dropping to as low as $1,700 per ounce on Thursday.

Gold prices closed on Thursday at $1,717 an ounce, down 1.9% for the week. Silver shows a weekly loss of 4.7% to trade at $18.64 per ounce. Platinum is off 5.4% to trade at $859. And palladium is off by 2.2% this week to bring spot prices to $1,968 per ounce, again all of these prices based on this Thursday evening recording.

Turning to copper, the industrial metal fell nearly 10% on the week to a 20-month low. The red metal is flashing a major red flag for the global economy.

It suggests that manufacturing activity is plunging.

The broader plunge in commodity markets also suggests that inflation pressures are abating. While not yet reflected in headline CPI data, markets are clearly foretelling a deceleration.

Having created the inflation problem in the first place by flooding the financial system with excess stimulus, the Fed is now panicking to try to correct its mistakes.

Fed chairman Jerome Powell is acting like a bad driver who over-steers to try to avoid a road hazard.

If the driver had kept his eyes on the road, he could have spotted the hazard early and gently put his foot on the brakes. But instead, he keeps his foot on the gas too long, then suddenly slams on the brakes while trying to swerve out of the way of danger, causing his car to spin out and crash.

The Fed’s reckless piloting of monetary policy is in the process of causing a major accident for the economy.

Should the central bank continue to raise interest rates rapidly, the dollar could have room for more upside on foreign exchange markets, and that upside could keep the gold bulls at bay.

However, the Fed may be forced to reverse course sooner than most analysts think.

A Fed-induced recession is becoming more likely with each passing week. Officials will surely hike rates again at their next policy meeting.

The big question is whether the Fed can deliver more hikes in September and beyond before the equity CONTINUED ON PAGE 29

RECESSION LOOMS FROM PAGE 28 markets freak out.

Markets may be pricing in more rate hikes than the Fed can actually deliver. If so, then the recent selling in gold and silver looks to be way overdone.

Many large market participants have shed their gold exposure in recent weeks.

Gold ETF holdings have also declined, demonstrating a lack of interest by the investing public. Sentiment is at a negative extreme usually associated with bottoms.

Meanwhile, the shorts in

the futures markets may be running out of gas. As there are few bullish speculators left to sell to, the bears will find pushing paper prices much lower from here challenging.

Current price levels for precious metals represent an excellent long-term value for patient investors. The long-term bullish narrative for gold and silver remains intact.

And despite seemingly everyone in the mainstream investing world hating the metals right now, bargain hunters are pouncing. De-

mand for physical bullion remains strong. It has even picked up during the recent spot price tumble.

Should market conditions become even more extreme like they were during the COVID panic in early 2020, product shortages and premium spikes could emerge.

But for now, Money Metals has plenty of common bullion products available for delivery at prices that probably won’t stay this low for long.

Directions 1. In bowl, combine giardiniera, red peppers, olives, celery, parsley and 2 tablespoons reserved giardiniera liquid; mix well.

2. Cut bread in half horizontally; tear out some bread, leaving about 1/2-inch to create bowl. Fill bottom bread bowl with olive salad.

Helen Erika Sones, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, went home to be with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on July 19, 2022. Born in Brieg, Germany to Adolph and Klara Neuber, she invested much of her life as a dedicated Army officer’s wife. She lovingly raised all four children at home, and then returned to college herself earning a masters degree to become a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist.

Upon retirement, Helen continued to touch lives and minister to her family and many friends. She demonstrated the love of Christ through a loving and generous heart, bright shining eyes, and an infectious sense of humor. She confirmed a relentless devotion to God and was a mighty prayer warrior and covered her whole family in daily prayer, leaning heavily on her faith in all that she did. She is survived by her beloved husband of 68 years, Vaughn Sones; her children, Richard Sones (Penny), Tracy Holcomb (Mark), Ronald Sones (Mary), and Kathryn Cox; eight granchildren, Michael Sones, Erin Gautreaux, Jesse Holcomb, Abigail Strate, Joshua Sones, Daniel Sones, Benjamin Sones, and David Sones; and ten great-grandchidren. She is preceded in death by her sister, Valda Butsch; and her son-in-law, Hagan B. Cox. The family would like to deeply thank Eva Jackson for her selfless and loving care of Helen. A funeral service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday, July 24, 2022, at the Chester Chapel of J.T. Morriss & Son Funeral Home. Interment will follow at Sunset Memorial Park. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.

Carroll “Frank” Franklin Bondurant, 95, of Chesterfield,VA, passed away on Tuesday, July 19, 2022.

Born in Richmond, VA, he was the son of the late Carroll Oliver Bondurant and Mary Walters Bondurant. He was also preceded in death by his beloved wife, Shirley Watkins Bondurant; granddaughter, Jennifer Lynn Moss; and son-in-law, Gary Williams.

Frank was part of the “greatest generation.” He proudly served his country during WWII in the U.S. Navy. He was a hard worker and enjoyed it. He finally retired at the age of 90. Frank was someone who never met a stranger and enjoyed socializing. He is loved and will be dearly missed.

He is survived by his children, Mary Lynn Williams, Brian Bondurant (Karen), Bruce Bondurant (Cottie), and Susan Walters (Ricky); 8 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 4:00 pm to 6:00 pm on Sunday, July 24, 2022 at the Chester Chapel of J.T. Morriss & Son Funeral Home. A funeral service will be held at 11:00 am on Monday, July 25, 2022 at the funeral home. Interment will follow at Sunset Memorial Park. Condolences may be registered at www.jtmorriss.com.

Tammy Harris Temple, 57, of Prince George, VA, a beloved wife, mother, and grandmother, went home to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, on July 18, 2022. She was preceded in death by her mother, June Harris, and her sister, Joni Kelley. Tammy was a devoted and faithful follower of Christ, and she was known for her selflessness and generosity. She demonstrated those qualities through frequent service to her spiritual family, Destination Church of Hopewell, VA. Upon retirement, she spent her days furthering her love of gardening, animal watching, and spending time with her family. She is survived by her beloved husband, Floyd Temple III; her two children, Tracey Howell (Dennis) and Travis Temple (Brittany); and her two grandchildren, Adriaunna Howell and Gavin Howell. She is also survived by four brothers, Charles Woodard, Johnny Woodard, Eddie Woodard, and Jody Woodard; and her father, Thomas Harris.

A celebration of her life will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, July 23, 2022, at the Oakland Baptist Church of Prince George, VA. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Prince George County Animal Shelter.

Emily Stech Chudoba, 93, passed away on Sunday, July 17, 2022.

She was born in Prince George, VA, to the late Roger Stech and Georgie Kvasnicka Stech. She was also preceded in death by her beloved husband of 69 years, Joseph E. Chudoba; sister, Georgie Spinner; and brother, Emil Stech.

Emily graduated as the Salutatorian of Disputanta High School in 1946. She enjoyed baking delicious breads and desserts, sewing, and tending to her garden. She also enjoyed singing in the Sacred Heart Church Choir and listening to all genres of music,

especially polkas.

She is survived by her children, Anne Marie Beamer (Kevin), Joanne Bennett (Buddy), and Patricia Hays (Brett); grandchildren, Jennifer Dishner (Aaron), Joseph Hays, and Matthew Hays; special niece, Anne Croxton; future great-granddaughter, baby Dishner; and numerous nieces and nephews.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, July 27, 2022, at the Church of the Sacred Heart, 9300 Community Ln, Prince George, VA 23805. The family will receive friends one-hour prior from 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. Interment will follow after Mass in the church cemetery. January 3, 1944 - July 17, 2022 Arthur “Dickie” Norris of Prince George, Virginia, passed away peacefully at home with his loving family by his side, on Sunday, July 17, 2022. Born January 3, 1944, in Greene County, North Carolina. He was preceded in death by his parents, Walter E. and Early Norris; and his wife, Carole J. Norris, whom he was the primary caregiver for the last 15 years of her life. Dickie retired from the Firestone Synthetic Plant in Hopewell, Virginia, after 37 years of service, and was one of the last remaining employees before the plant closed. Dickie was a very loving husband, father, and grandfather, who loved family above all else. Spending time with his kids, grandkids, and friends was his greatest joy. If you knew our dad, you knew he was a talker. Always asking how so-and-so was, or have you seen this or that person, and how they were doing. Always having concern for others. As the story goes, he was once asked by a coworker, “Mr. Norris, did you used to be a radio host?” Dad responded by saying, “No, why do you ask?” “Because you sure do talk a lot,” was the reply. That was our dad.

Dickie is survived by his daughters, Lisa Wamsley and Rebecca Forren; son, Tommy Norris (Debbie); a sister, Zelphia Warren, of Hampton, Virginia; and brother, Earl Norris, of Kinston, North Carolina; grandchildren, Kyle (Brooke) and Travis Wamsley, Carly and Dylan Forren, Emily Miles, Mallory Norris, Brittany Robertson (Chris), Amanda Edwards (Michial), Matt Bain (Tamara); great-grandchildren, Kaylin, C.J. and Kirsten Robertson, Easton and Luke Edwards, and Kennedy and Kian Bain. Doris Franklin Lorentzen, 91, of Prince George, passed away on Thursday, July 14, 2022. Born in Winston-Salem, NC, she was the daughter of the late Walter C. Franklin and Florida M. Franklin. She was also preceded in death by her beloved husband, Sergeant Major (Ret.) Loren Lorentzen; great-granddaughter, Robin Jones; and several brothers and sisters.

Doris Lorentzen had a passion for music and enjoyed playing her guitar and singing.

She was a selfless woman who always put others first. Her husband, Loren, suffered a stroke and she stood by his side, taking care of him for the next 20 years. She is loved and will be dearly missed.

Leicha A. Blunt

August 22, 1959 - July 16, 2022 Leicha Antoine Blunt, 62, was born on August 22, 1959 to Annie Irene and Charlie William Blunt in Boykins, VA. Leicha gained her heavenly wings on July 16, 2022 at John Randolph Hospital, Hopewell VA. Leicha accepted Christ at an early age and attended Pleasant Plain Baptist Church in Drewryville, VA. Leicha attended school in Southampton County, VA. Leicha moved to Hopewell and attended Union Branch Baptist Church and Sunday School. She also helped with the Sunday School and kitchen committee.

She was a hard-worker at Days Inn Hotel in Chester for many years. Leicha was also employed at Petersburg General Hospital, Southside Regional Medical Center, Prince George County Public Schools and Central State Hospital until her health declined.

Leicha enjoyed watching her favorite television shows, family get together and playing games on her “cellular phone” as she would say.

She was preceded in death by her mother, Annie Irene Blunt; father, Charlie William Blunt; and two sisters, Hazel Rollins and Karen “Daffy” Johnson. Leicha leaves to cherish her memories: one daughter, Dominique A. He was a Prince George High School graduate Class of 2012 and University of Richmond Class of 2016. He was preceded by his infant brother, “Trey Taylor”; his grandparents that loved on him, Webster and Tella Taylor, James and Elfriede Jackson.

Nancy Hamlin Gilliam

Mrs. Nancy Hamlin Gilliam, 73, transitioned from labor to reward on Friday, July 15, 2022, at Chippenham Hospital. She was born on April 12, 1949, to Elise and Harvey Hamlin of Chesterfield, VA. She accepted Christ at an early age and was an active member at Brown Grove Baptist Church. Nancy served on the Usher Board, participated as a Junior Missionary, and was a member of the Gospelettes Chesterfield Choral Ensemble.

She also sang with Sahara E. Nelson at First Independent Methodist Church. Nancy loved to sing for the Lord.

Nancy attended Carver High School in Chester, VA. Upon completing high school, she furthered her career and became a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA). She worked as a CNA for numerous years and dedicated her life to caring for others. Nancy enjoyed shopping, thrifting, crafting, sewing garments, traveling, baking, and spending quality time with family. She also loved watching Perry Mason. She will be remembered as an outspoken, courageous, loving, lively, compassionate, fashionable, humorous, and Godly woman.

Susie Bell “Bigmomma” Talley June 14, 1930 - July 12, 2022

Susie Bell Talley, affectionately known as “Bigmomma”, was born on June 14, 1930, to the late James Earl and Susie Talley.

The youngest of six, Susie Bell was known for putting on a show when her father was near, showing who the true baby and boss of the family was.

Susie Bell was educated in Dinwiddie County, where she welcomed her first born son, Robert Talley. In 1953, Susie Bell left Dinwiddie County and moved to Corona in Queens, NY, to pursue her career as a homemaker. While on her live-in job she met and fell in love with Robert Davis and from this union two children were born, Winston and Lionell Davis.

Susie Bell and her family moved to Newark, New Jersey, where she worked at Williams Cleaners for 37 years. After retiring in 2001, she then became employed as a bus aid for Belair Transportation as well as on the Dot Transportation until she retired for good in 2015.

Susie Bell spent the rest of her life dedicated to her family, one way she showed her love was through her numerous famous meals. You could count on Susie Bell to make a spread for every holiday, for all to enjoy. She had a love for Monday night Raw Wrestling, everyone knew if you dared to call during Wrestling, you were going to be rushed off the phone.

Susie Bell gained her wings on July 12, 2022 surrounded by her loving family. Susie bell was predeceased by her husband, Robert Davis; her two sons, Robert Talley and Winston Davis; parents, James and Susie Talley; five siblings, Frank, Lucy, Dorthy, Floyd, and Virgie; her best friend/sister, Audrey Whitehead; and her bonus daughter, Barbara Anne Davis.

Clifford E. Thompson, Sr.

Admired by all he can in contact with, he always advocated for the underdog which left lifelong impressions throughout the community and his present will be missed by many.

Clifford Edward Thompson, Sr., 83, of Colonial Heights, Virginia passed away peacefully on July 14, 2022. Because of his lovely smile and his beautiful dimples, early in his life he received the nickname, “Possum”. He was born in Reidsville, North Carolina to Helen Thompson Johnson and reared by Willie and Elnora Spencer. Mrs. Spencer lovingly called him, “Clifton” and so did everybody else. He was educated in the public elementary schools of Chesterfield County attending Port Walthall, Kingsland and Carver. At 13, he moved to Winston Salem, North Carolina and attended Skyland Middle School and Atkins High School.

After high school Clifford returned to Colonial Heights, where he met the love of his life, Margaret Ann “MaAnn” Newsome. The courtship grew. After five years, they married on August 1, 1962, He was affectionately called, “Dad, Pops, Papa and Grandpa”, by his children and grandchildren.

He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather.

He was predeceased by his brother, Prince A. Moore and a number of other relatives.

Anthony attended Petersburg and Chesterfield Public Schools. When it came to artistry, Anthony was very talented. He never attended Art School but was blessed with the God-given talent of drawing. Anthony was also well-known and loved by many and will truly be missed. He loved family and friends and always saw the good in everybody.

Anthony is survived by his parents, Mary Lawrence, Richmond, VA and Willie D. Pitts of Ohio; a wife, Shenika Moore of Hopewell, VA; six children, Rushun Goode, Hopewell, VA, Diamond M. Mr. Floyd Samuel Roney of 1630 Brittwood Dr., Richmond, Virginia departed this life Tuesday morning, July 12, 2022, at St. Mary’s Hospital, Richmond, Virginia. He was born May 17, 1942, in Dinwiddie County, Virginia to the late Margaret and Samuel Roney.

Floyd was blessed to have thirteen brothers and sisters, Lawrence Roney, William Roney, Dorothy Jones, Essie Blackwell, Inez Roney, Mary Lee Mason, John Thomas, Fenton Roney, Booker T. Roney, Mildred Pegram, Gloria Byrd, and Philip Roney, who all preceded him in death; and surviving sister, Gloria Byrd.

As a child, Floyd became a member of Olive Branch Baptist Church, Dinwiddie, VA. He attended the Dinwiddie County Public School System, Dinwiddie, VA and graduated from Dinwiddie High School, Dinwiddie, VA where he then went on to attend John Tyler Community College, Chester, VA. Throughout many years, he was dedicated to cooking and catering, which led to him owning his own restaurant, Chatterbox Restaurant & Catering, in Richmond, VA. He leaves to cherish fond memories: his wife, Nancy Roney; children, Floyd Roney, Jr., Kevin Roney, Felecia Roney Shazer, Crystal Harris, and Tiffany Roney Holden (Quante Holden); ten grandchildren, Calicia Bowser, Deja Roney, Tamia Shazer, Keandre Harris, Diamond Roney, and Dylashia Roney, to name a few, and one who preceded him in death, Auriel Shazer; one great-grandchild; and a host of uncles, aunts, devoted friends, and extended family.

Alfred was a Veteran of the Vietnam War and went on to retire after 28 years of service, in the United States Army, with numerous awards and citations. He was married for 43 years to the late Doris N. Bowens.

He leaves to cherish his memory: his children, Patricia D. Brooks, Michael A. Tucker, Martinez A. Bowens; special daughters, Harriet D. Divers and Victoria N. Hicks; three brothers, Michael L. Bowens, Sr, Ronald L. Bowens, Sr. (Marion) and Lloyd J. Penn; as well as a number of nieces, nephews, grandchildren and devoted friend, David Sharpe.

Border Crisis Contributed to Botched Response to Uvalde School Massacre: Report CHARLOTTE CUTHBERTSON

UVALDE, Texas—The school in which 19 children and two teachers were massacred on May 24, had been in lockdown four times in the month prior to the shooting, said Uvalde Mayor Don McLaughlin.

Schools in the whole district had been in lockdown mode 47 times since February due to the border crisis spilling into the city, which is a smuggling corridor from the U.S.–Mexico border to San Antonio, a recent Texas House of Representatives report stated.

Ninety percent of the lockdowns were due to law enforcement chases of suspected smuggling vehicles through Uvalde and subsequent bailouts—where the driver crashes or stops the vehicle and occupants jump out and scatter from law enforcement, the report said.

The sheer increase in bailouts over the past 18 months and the subsequent lockdowns “contributed to a diminished sense of vigilance about responding to security alerts,” the Texas House report states.

“The series of bailout-related alerts led teachers and administrators to respond to all alerts with less urgency—when they heard the sound of an alert, many assumed that it was another bailout.”

Two months after the deadly massacre at Robb Elementary School, the school district is preparing for the beginning of a new year. But the Texas House review of law enforcement’s response to the May 24 shooting revealed a series of alarming failures by first responders. As a result, parents aren’t ready to send their kids back to a district they say is unsafe and where security problems remain unremedied.

“We’re 30 days from school starting and we’re having pursuits come through. We’re having bailouts—we had one this morning in Uvalde,” McLaughlin told The Epoch Times on July 12.

“And what’s going to happen when we have a bailout right by school and it has to go into lockdown? How much panic is there going to be? How much trauma is that going to cause these kids?

Parents of children who were slain in the shooting have told the mayor they’re considering homeschooling their other children.

“I said I understand, but I can promise you from the city’s standpoint, we will do everything that we can to make sure your kids are safe,” McLaughlin said he told concerned parents.

The mayor has requested additional state troopers to be deployed to Uvalde for the first two weeks of the school year.

When asked if he thought some sort of “lockdown fatigue” existed at schools prior to the massacre, McLaughlin said, “I would think there would be, but I can’t speak for the school district.”
