PETERSBURG– A resident’s worst fear just might prove to be a viable possibility in the City of Petersburg. Those living above the second floor inside the city could face a higher risk of severe injury or death in the case of a fire.

Should a blaze engulf an apartment complex, the Petersburg Fire Department faces the grave reality of potentially catastrophic results. In the case of a multiple-level structure fire, the PFD will arrive on scene and deploy the only available elevated rescue equipment they have– 24foot ladders. Fully extended, the firefighters can barely reach a second story window. Those on the floors above fall prey to stairwells blocked by fire and the availability and response time of mutual aid ladder trucks.

In such emergencies the call for mutual aid will be made, but availability of the nearest truck and response time of the furthest truck can still be a matter of life or death. In an LNN interview, James Vick, President of the Petersburg Professional Firefighters

Association, Local 2773, said that the possibility of unavailable mutual aid is not only plausible, but it has also happened. During the recent stormfront that hit the region, Petersburg put out a request for mutual aid. Vick said the requested support was unavailable, leaving the PFD to respond as well as possible without the assistance of anticipated equipment, apparatus, or manpower to bridge the PFD’s gaps and address the emergency more effectively.

LNN also asked the Chief the projected return date and future of Truck #1, but as of the time of this report, no response has been received.

PFD Engine #2 does have a mounted ladder but is designed for an elevated water source. Although it has a ladder, it is not designed with necessary features that make it a safe rescue option. Even if the firefighters wanted to attempt an emergency rescue with the boom ladder, it would pose a credible risk to both the firefighter and victim. In addition, as with much of the fleet, Engine #2 suffers from repair necessities that have currently placed the boom out of service due to mechanical issues.

According to the National Fire Protection Association, any fire apparatus over 20 years old will see no value from upgrading and, after 25 years, should be retired from service. Petersburg Truck #1 is a 2007 with 15 years of service on it. While five years from the first NFPA marker of 20 years, additional considerations may be being overlooked.

well. The decision becomes complicated when a truck nears the end of its useful life yet needs a major investment in repairs to reach that end.

Sources inside the Petersburg Fire Department have confirmed that Truck #1 has been in and out of service frequently over the past five years, including a stretch of over ten months in which the truck was inoperable.

Combine the tangible costs of inoperable vehicles with the intangibles such as safety, recruitment, morale and even liability to continue to use an older, repaired truck, and the costs are even greater.

According to sources inside the department, PFD morale and recruitment efforts have been seriously hampered by the leadership style of the new Chief.

Sources have suggested that the lack of communication between Chief Watkins and PFD personnel has created uncertainty and plummeting morale in the department.

Continual sub-par or even lack of necessities such as a working dependable ladder truck risks further attrition of emergency personnel– a cost that can be estimated. According to the Firerescue1.com article, “If low morale from outdated equipment causes your department to lose three members per year and it costs $2,000 to recruit a replacement, then the cost of morale would be calculated as $6,000 per year,” – a very low estimate of cost considering the aggressive recruit-

Vick said they have no idea why the Chief would not speak with them. LNN had

also asked Chief Watkins in the July 12th email to verify such contacts were made and if so, what her response was and why. LNN has received no response as of the date of this report.

Scott Spenser, Service Representative for the International Association of Fire Fighters said the City of Petersburg’s primary service is highly dependent on the help of neighboring localities. Spenser went on to explain that the process to identify and dispatch an available mutual aid resource is very limited. He also said that the City of Petersburg does not participate in a regional radio system. That system allows

each locality to identify the availability of mutual aid assets quicker and easier, compounding the issue by adding to the response time for receiving mutual aid.

For now, the Petersburg Fire Department rank and file faces the real and present danger of a depleted emergency apparatus fleet, dwindling morale, limited mutual aid availability, and a lack of answers from department and city leadership. The citizens face a real public safety crisis.

With the initial lack of response by Chief Watkins, LNN also sent a text to each City of Petersburg Councilor requesting a time to meet and discuss this issue. As

of this report, no city councilor has responded to that request.

Prince George Takes No Action on Target Shooting PRINCE GEORGE

PRINCE GEORGE- On Tuesday, July 12th, the Prince George board room was standing room only, packed with citizens eager to voice their opinions to the county’s five supervisors. The topic drawing the crowd was a report from County Attorney Dan Whitten on the discharge of firearms on private property. After several citizens registered complaints about neighbors target shooting, the county formed a committee comprised of law enforcement, county staff, and citizens to study the issue and propose a potential solution.

The committee’s proposal, presented to the board by Whitten during Tuesday’s meeting, would require a person shooting on their own property to maintain a distance of at least 300 feet from a dwelling or structure. The distance requirement would not include the person’s own home and buildings.

and layout of an individual’s property, the proposed restriction could prevent them from shooting on their own private property and force them to travel to a friend or family member’s land to target shoot, or to pay to shoot at a range- an option that would likely carry a hefty price tag.

about the proposal during the public comment portion of Tuesday’s meeting.

Marlon Dance, owner of Dance’s Sporting Goods, was a member of the committee that studied the issue. He rose to address the board, telling both the supervisors and the audience that he did not think the issue required an ordinance or action by the board. “I don’t see where

Prince George County has a problem. There have been zero problems other than a complaint from one, two people. That’s going to happen all the time in anything.”

“I know this was a passionate situation. handling of a weapon.”

District 1 Supervisor Floyd Brown, Jr. outlined for the audience a situation in his district in which an elderly lady was concerned at frequent gunfire at her neighbor’s home. “It went on for days and for hours,” Brown described. “In that

situation, I was able to pull everybody together and negotiate a time for the person to shoot, and they agreed upon that. That would be the way I would hope that we could solve all of this, if everyone was just more respectful to one another as neighbors.”

At the close of the discussion, the supervisors opted not to take any action or draft any ordinance at this time, but did ask County Police Chief Keith Early to continue collecting data on target shooting-related incidents for future study.

Former Hopewell CM Takes Reins in Petersburg PETERSBURG

PETERSBURG- On Tuesday, July 5th, the City of Petersburg officially announced the hiring of John “March” Altman as the new city manager.

Altman comes to Petersburg from Hopewell where he currently serves as city manager. Altman has prior experience in Petersburg; he served as Deputy City Manager of Operations for the city in 2017.

Having worked in local government for close to thirty years, Altman’s experience ranges from economic development to planning to budgeting. He holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Urban Affairs and Planning from Virginia Tech and a Master’s Degree in Urban and Regional Planning from VCU. Altman’s departure from Hopewell and hiring in Petersburg has triggered public discussion, primarily via social media, where concerns have been raised about Hopewell’s financial audit status. The

city is several years behind on annual audits and has struggled to catch up under Altman’s tenure.

While Finance Department and other city staff are responsible for implementing the audits, ultimately the City Manager is

responsible for overseeing all such operations of the city.

Altman will officially take the reins in Petersburg on Monday, August 15th with a salary of $190,000 a year.

Hopewell Council Approves $186 Million HOPEWELL

HOPEWELL– Hopewell City Council passed a budget for the 2022-2023 fiscal year totalling to $186,143,905, with $57.4 million of that sum in the general fund. That includes a $500,000 cut from the Hopewell School Board for its 2023 budget totaling $12.5 million.

The budget passed 7 to 0 in city council’s vote.

Vice Mayor Johnny Partin explained that cuts were made through a combination of slicing funding for each department and using American Rescue Program Act money. That ARPA funding was also implemented for the police and fire to hire essential staff to help protect local residents in times of emergency.

“I supported the budget because it was a balanced budget with several budget cuts, allowing more flexibility for tax relief and more capital improvement projects for next year,” explained Partin.

“The biggest thing in the

budget was that we had cuts across the board, not departments over burdened with cuts,” he continued.

Elected officials decided to only allow part-time employees with council approval, as well as to cut funding for PART (Petersburg Area Regional Tourism) and Chamber of Commerce funding with an option to revisit those outside requests later and using ARPA funding.

Members debated funding a part-time police officer that was requested to investigate cold cases, as well as provide support in current murders. A motion to approve the position failed 4 to 3.

The budget was adapted and changed by councilors to include a 10 percent across-the-board cut for city departments.

“Residents are already getting hit with trash collection increases and real estate and personal property,” Councilor Jasmine Gore said during the budget meeting on June 30th. “I don’t think any citizens will be upset that we are putting money

back into the budget. The City Council cut the budget three years ago to bare minimum during the pandemic.

I doubt we will get slammed for putting money back into our budget.”

City Manager March Altman explained that council could revisit its budget in the fall and make budget amendments as personal property tax monies come in- a sum likely to see a significant increase due to skyrocketing vehicle values; representatives have the option to use that extra funding to help offset some of the cost being absorbed by citizens.

“Initially our City Manager and Finance Manager gave us a balanced budget in May by using government received ARPA funds of $2 million to plug our deficit.

We had a deficit because when the council gave fire and police step pay program with raises, it was suggested to also do that for public works and sheriffs departments,” Ward 1 Councilor Deborah Randolph noted.

“Those two departments had not been included

in what the city manager suggested. Problem was that some on council did not think about how to pay for the added increase.

That should always be our thought process and never suggest before exploring our options.”

Randolph indicated that councilors should be willing to consider and adopt the suggestions made by the people they hire to manage the city’s business, including city manager and finance director, because they have knowledge and experience in managing and operating government finances. She and Councilor Janice Denton agreed that the city should use ARPA funds as recommended by the finance staff, but the other council members did not agree.

The forced department cuts, Randolph said, equaled about $700,000 or about 0.012% of the city’s total operations budget of over $57 million. That amount still left a $1.3 million deficit, which was covered with ARPA funding.

Board Approves Water Agreement with Chappell Creek

PRINCE GEORGE – After postponing a vote on acceptance of a pro rata share agreement between Prince George County and Chappell Creek, LLC for public water infrastructure improvements, the Board of Supervisors unanimously approved the plan at the July 12th meeting for the currently under-construction subdivision.

Chappell Creek, LLC, a subsidiary of Boyd Homes, is the developer for the Chappell Creek neighborhood, a 98-lot residential subdivision. The development is located off Beaver Castle Road across from the entrance of the county’s oldest subdivision, Beech-

wood Manor.

The subdivision, which was approved in 2013, included the construction of a 500,000-gallon elevated water storage tank within the development and allowed a temporary connection of the first 20 homes to the Beechwood Manor community well system. Then, Boyd Homes submitted a revised Chappell Creek subdivision plan for review in 2019, which identified locations for future water tanks.

At the June 14th meeting, the Board delayed a vote as members requested that County Engineer Frank Haltom, staff, and possibly the developers hold a public information meeting for the residents of nearby impacted neighborhoods

and report the concerns or support for the new water system.

Haltom explained that a local resident expressed concerns about how the water system would impact the other nearby residential areas- including Jordan on the James, Beechwood Manor, and River’s Edge- on the well system, suggesting the county take a cash payment from the developer to help with the cost to expand the water line. The engineer explained why that wasn’t the best option.

Under this now accepted share agreement, Prince George will have about 1,900 feet of line to increase in line size from between 4 and 6 inches to eight inches.

The move will also benefit residents who often have brown colored water. While it’s safe to drink, that color is off-putting to consumers.”This will be a benefit to those on the current system,” Hunter noted.

Hunter made the motion to approve the agreement with Chappell Creek, which was seconded by District 1 Supervisor Alan Carmichael. All five members of the board voted unanimously to approve the plan.

HOPEWELL– “All good things must come to an end,” Meredith Dean said about the closing of Roja Taco Joint, which she has owned and operated for a couple of years.

But the closure doesn’t mean the end of her sought-after street tacos.

She and partner Michael are consolidating Waves Sandwich Company on North Main Street, and she’s planning to introduce taco Tuesdays at Waves periodically so followers can continue to get a taste of the authentic Mexican fare.

Waves offers a variety of sandwiches from reubens to Philly cheesesteaks. It’s been a popular location with patrons, who praise the loaded subs full of meats, cheese, and toppings along with their other offerings; now, the selection at Waves will include an occasional Roja-style twist.

With the consolidation, Dean said she is weighing her options about what to do with the Roja building, which has seen many transformations since once housing the Stone Diner.

RICHMOND- Over 300 Virginia state employees have quit their positions with the Commonwealth since May, according to a report from WRIC Channel 8 News. The departures coincide with Governor Glenn Youngkin’s announcement that Virginia’s employees would be required to return to their offices fulltime beginning Tuesday, July 5th.

Impacted departments include VDOT, which had 183 staff members resign, the Virginia Department of Health, the Virginia Employment Commission, the Department of Housing and Community Development, and the Department of Emergency Management. Though not all of the departing employees cited the change in ability to telework as their reason for leaving, the number and timing of the resignations are prompting many to think that eliminating telework options is causing turnover in the state government.

BUCHANAN, VA- On Wednesday, July 13th, Governor Glenn Youngkin declared a state of emergency due to major flooding in the southwestern portion of the state. Heavy rainfall Tuesday, July 12th carried over into the early morning hours of Wednesday, July 13th, causing flash flooding in the area. Buchanan County experienced power outages as well as road and infrastructure damage because of the flash flooding; the county is still recovering from similar flooding that happened last year. Reports indicate that close to 40 people are currently missing after the severe weather event. The Virginia Emergency Support Team is assisting local emergency personnel in the response effort.

Chili Peppers Mild Mid-Season COLONIAL HEIGHTS

COLONIAL HEIGHTS- The Tri-City Chili Peppers seem to be in a rut as they move into mid-July. The team won an away game on the Fourth of July, defeating the Martinsville Mustangs 11-9, but have been unable to secure a win since that game.

On Wednesday, July 6th, the Peppers hit the road again, this time travelling to Hampton to face the rival Peninsula Pilots. The Pilots eked out a 2-1 win in the low-scoring game, and the Chili Peppers returned to Colonial Heights for a series of home games.

On Friday, July 8th, the team once again played the Martinsville Mustangs, but the Mustangs were raring for a rematch and secured a 6-5 win. The following night, July 9th, the Peppers and the Holly Springs Salamanders met on the field, but once again, the Peppers could not bring their brand of heat,

While both teams were able to get runners across home plate, the HiToms took the victory 8-6.

The Chili Peppers struggled in away games across late June and early July but had been able to maintain their momentum when playing at home in Colonial Heights.

With this recent series of home field losses, that momentum may be waning. The

Peppers hit the road again for a July 14th rematch with the HiToms in North Carolina and a July 15th game against the Mustangs before returning home on Saturday, July 16th to play the Morehead City Marlins.

Robbery at Mars Jewelry Store: 1984 | July 11, 2022

On June 22 around 4:15 p.m., a Black male suspect entered Mars Jewelry Store located at 230 Southpark Circle in Colonial Heights’ Southpark Mall. The suspect walked around the store for several minutes trying on several pieces of jewelry, valued at about $40,000, before backing out of the store. When confronted by the store employees, the suspect pulled a black pistol from a bag and threatened them before fleeing the scene.

DEATH IN OUR STREETS AND SCHOOLS SENATOR FRANK RUFF

15TH SENATE DISTRICT Sadly, we continue to hear of shootings all around our nation. I wish that there was a solution so simple, but there is not. The issues are complicated with no simple and easy answer.

Guns have been part of our society longer than the nation has existed.

Hollywood stars weigh in with righteous indig-

nation while they employ armed security. Some of these same actors continue in movies and television shows in which the stars, good and bad, use weapons indiscriminately shooting at each other. Rarely do these programs show the agony of pain of being shot. Rarely are the heroes even wounded, and by the next week they usually have fully recovered. These shows are on every night.

Do these actors have the slightest concern to the effect these shows are having on young people? Do these

actors ever refuse to accept these roles?

Some politicians see absolutely no conflict with demanding more laws that prevent citizens from taking action to protect their families while they surround themselves with security detail who are armed to protect them.

What Does Not Work Every state has passed laws preventing guns on school property. This sounded like wise policy, but the statistics tell a different story. When a nut job wants headlines, they have

increasingly gone to schools where they know there will be no guns available to prevent a catastrophe. A better solution would be to have, at the very least, tasers or other methods to fight back. Knowing that a school has protection would make them less attractive targets.

Some cities and states believe that, if given cash, everyone will turn in their gun. This is extremely naïve. In recent weeks, Richmond and Portsmouth city governments announced such buy back CONTINUED ON PAGE 24

RUFF FROM PAGE 25 plans. They did this in response to recent murders in their cities. They lack the ability to understand that increased violence murder rates often result in citizens buying weapons to protect their family. They have no understanding of this sense of survival.

Telling others what to do while doing the exact opposite seems shallow to me. It is past time to consider solutions that might have serious effects. Carefully profiling who and why this is happening is the best starting point.

What Might Work We know that the mass shooters tend to be males in their late teens or early twenties. When we pay attention to the many signs of problems, we see a pat-

tern of antisocial behavior.

Rarely do these individuals go from normal to killers in one step. They began their evolution years earlier. Our current system lets them fall through the cracks. When an after the fact investigation occurs, neighbors and acquaintances come out of the woodwork with tales of odd behavior that has gotten worse as the individual got older.

Our school system is set up in such a way that if a problem arises at one grade level, it rarely, if ever, follows him into the next grade level. An issue that arises in elementary school does not follow a student into middle school and high school.

Reconsidering that policy, if professional services or law enforcement were alerted

earlier, at the very best, they might have been able to confront the root of the problem. Or, at worst, law enforcement would be on the alert to individuals to watch for abnormal activities and on social media.

No one wants unbalanced folks having a gun. Having the above track record would raise concerns and additional investigation should that person try to purchase a weapon. Additionally, family members should be warned in writing that buying a gun for a family member who uses it to break the law can be charged with aiding and abetting the criminal act.

Returning to Values Will this stop all gun violence? Of course not!

There have been disturbed

people in every time and age. However, we evolved down into our current situation as many abandoned church and stopped teaching the values of our faith at both home and in our schools.

Those of us who were raised in the church and insisted that our children attend regularly usually find those values learned in the church have carried us and them into respectful lives.

Lives that make them solid citizens, giving back and caring for others.

When the Dollar Breaks Down, Metals Will Lift Off STEFAN GLEASON MONEY METALS NEWS SERVICE

Gold and silver markets continue to be pressured by a relentlessly rising U.S. Dollar Index.

Throughout the year, the Federal Reserve Note has been gaining ground against the euro, the yen, and other fiat currencies.

Of course, when measured against real economic goods, the U.S. currency has been losing value at a rapid pace. But futures traders who take their cues from foreign exchange markets have decided to sell precious metals contracts in response to superficial dollar strength.

After going essentially straight up for more than a year, the Dollar Index chart is now looking extremely overbought.

The Federal Reserve note may be due for a retracement against its foreign counterparts. That will likely spark a rally in metals markets.

What fundamental drivers could cause the buck to decline?

For one, currency markets may be overestimating the

Fed’s willingness to continue tightening monetary policy aggressively.

The U.S. central bank is widely expected to hike its benchmark interest rate another 75 basis points later

House surely doesn’t want Republicans to be able to make a “Biden recession” the top issue on voters’ minds.

Meanwhile across the Atlantic, the European Central

this month. Anything less would be a blow to dollar bulls.

Since the Fed began hiking, stocks have plunged into a bear market as oil, copper, and other economically sensitive commodities have also plunged. Markets are now pricing in a recession – something that should give Fed policymakers pause.

Any more bad news out capital markets or the economy will lead to calls from high places on Wall Street and in Washington for Jerome Powell and company to pivot away from inflation fighting.

Europe’s leading economy, Germany, is suffering an energy crisis due to a shortfall of Russia-supplied gas.

With electricity and food costs skyrocketing in euro countries, a currency crisis could follow unless officials get serious about shoring up the euro.

The U.S. dollar is ultimately no safe haven from a euro collapse. Over time, all fiat currencies stand to depreciate against hard currency – gold and silver.

For now, the cyclical upswing in the U.S. Dollar Index is masking underlying

dollar weakness. Its purchasing power, the ultimate measure of its “strength,” continues to decline.

Market cycles are often driven based more on sentiment and momentum than underlying fundamentals. But fundamentals do ultimately determine how viable a given market move is for the long run.

Investors will eventually realize that the depreciating U.S. dollar isn’t a viable safe haven from financial or geopolitical turmoil.

And at some point, not even nominal dollar “strength” on foreign currency markets will prevent precious metals from trending toward their fundamental value as the strongest forms of cash.

Ingredients • 2 North Carolina sweetpotatoes • 1/2 head purple cabbage • 1 tablespoon olive oil • salt, to taste • pepper, to taste • 6 tablespoons poppyseed dressing, divided • 1 tablespoon chopped parsley • 2 cups grape tomatoes, halved • 3 tablespoons feta cheese, crumbled

Directions 1. Preheat grill to 400 F. 2. Scrub and wash sweetpotatoes. Cut each into six wedges. (If sweetpotatoes are long, consider cutting wedges in half.) Parboil sweetpotatoes 5 minutes, drain and cool 5 minutes.

3. Shred cabbage into thin slices.

Dennis Walter Knaack July 26, 1936 - July 12, 2022

Dennis Walter Knaack, 85, of Chester, VA, passed away peacefully at Chesapeake Regional hospital on Tuesday, July 12, 2022 with his family at

his side.

He was born on July 26, 1936, in Chicago, to Walter E. Knaack and Mary Knaack.

Dennis was a loving husband, father, and grandfather.

Left behind to cherish his memory are his wife of 55 years, Phyllis; his son, Kevin and his wife, Molly, of Virginia Beach, VA; and his daughter, Emily Knaack of Chester, VA. He will be missed by his grandchildren who he loved dearly, Matthew Hawkins, of Chester, and Zane and Harper Grace, of Virginia Beach.

He also leaves behind a brother, Steve and his wife, Diane of Allen, TX; and a sister, Cynthia of Rock Hill, SC; and several nieces and nephews.

Dennis proudly served his country in the United States Marine Corps. In his early years he worked as a grocery store manager. He went on to attend Ball State University and majored in accounting. He spent his working years in accounting as a CPA. He retired after many years from the Albemarle Corporation as a Corporate Auditor. Dennis loved to travel, and his job allowed him to see many parts of the world.

He was an active member of Chester United Methodist Church.

The family will receive friends from 3:00 pm to 5:00 pm on Sunday, July 17, 2022, at the Chester Chapel of J.T. Morriss & Son Funeral Home. A funeral service will be held at 11:00 am on Monday, July 18, 2022, at Chester United Methodist Church. Interment will be held at a later date at Albert G. Horton, Jr. Memorial Veteran’s Cemetery, Suffolk, VA. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Chester United Methodist Church music department. Condolences may be registered at www.jtmorriss.com.

Shannon Cox Lackey

January 30, 1970 - July 10, 2022 Shannon Lee Cox Lackey, 52, of Dinwiddie, VA, went to be with her Lord and Savior on July 10, 2022. Born and raised in the tri-cities of Virginia, she was a loving daughter, wife, mother and MiMi. After a very dedicated 15 year career at Food Lion where she excelled at display and design, she then launched her career and life’s dedication to serving individuals with disabilities and special needs. She partnered with her sons in opening and operating residential group homes in Chesterfield, VA. This was not just a career path but a passion for her. She dearly loved each of her individuals and they dearly loved her. They acknowledged her as their Momma and Mimi.

Each of Shannon’s career choices mirrored her passions and interests. She loved to decorate cakes and create comforting home cooked meals (She wanted to open and operate her own catering business for many years). She loved decorating inside and outside. She loved her flowers and plants (also inside and outside). She was very creative at floral arrangements and centerpieces. She found incredible joy and life in serving and celebrating with her residents in both homes she operated. But most importantly to her was her family and the time she spent with them.

Shannon was preceded in death by her paternal grandparents, James and Audrey Cox; her maternal grandparents, Fritz and Florence Johnson; and her maternal aunts, Brenda Johnson Atkins and Aunt BB. She is survived by her parents, Larry Lee and Linda Johnson Cox, of Henrico, NC; and her loving husband of 22 years, John C. Lackey, Jr., of Dinwiddie, VA. She also left behind her devoted son and family, Dustin Lee Cox Wade (Joseph), of Chesterfield, VA; and precious daughter and family, Amber Nicole Fisher, of Chesterfield, VA. She was Mimi to her precious grandchildren, Jayden Edward Rhodes, Jeremiah Brooks, Jasiah Lee Brooks, and Breiyanah Ranae Sky Brooks, all of Chesterfield, VA. William “Bill” H. Frye, Jr., lovingly known as Sweet William to his family and friends, passed away on Friday, July 8, 2022, at the age of 78. Born in Saltville, Virginia, he raised his family in Hopewell, Virginia for the past 55 years. Bill was preceded in death by his parents, William H. Frye, Sr. and Daphne Frye (née Blevins) and his sister, Linda Taylor. Bill worked at Firestone in Hopewell in the production department until the plant closed.

He also spent his career working in the plumbing, heating, and air services, and served honorably in the United States Army.

Bill enjoyed hunting and fishing, and he had a passion for coin collecting, and Saturday yard sale adventures. He was a member of City Point Restoration Church in Hopewell, Virginia. Most importantly, Bill will be remembered as a loving husband, father, and the greatest “poppy” ever. Bill is survived by his loving wife of 57 years, Linda C. Frye (née Rhea); daughters, Marie Synan (Dennis) and Kim Allen (Floyd); granddaughters, Kaitlyn Longstaff (Mike) and Kelsey Allen; great-grandchildren, Michael Longstaff and Anise Longstaff; siblings, Nance Lane, James “Jim” Frye (Sue), Carrie Evans (Rodney), Bonnie Hawthorne (Jeff), and Connie Vanover (Buddy); sister-in-law, Rose Clark (Bill); beloved family dog, Dumpling; and numerous nieces and nephews. Annie Ruth Ryder Watson, 89, of Church Road, Virginia, passed away on July 7, 2022 at her home. She was born June 18, 1933 in Littleton, Warren County, North Carolina, as the youngest of six children. Her parents were Frank Ritner Ryder and Lucy Alston Ryder. Annie Ruth was a good student and basketball player as she grew up; she loved the farm and had a special affection for animals both big (horses) and small. She married James “Jimmy” Watson on August 13, 1960 at Monumental Baptist Church, and soon settled in Dinwiddie County, Virginia.

Annie Ruth and Jimmy Watson were always involved in local church ministry including bus ministry, children’s work and the nursery, and she became a constant presence in the kitchen. They raised two daughters, Angela Raye and Robin Elaine, providing for a Christian education and college training, often at great personal sacrifice. They found a church home at Grace Baptist Church in the mid-1980s, and Annie Ruth faithfully attended and served the Lord there for the next 36 years, even after the passing of her beloved husband in 2001.

She was greatly loved by her daughters and sons-in-law, Angela and Chip Hansen, and Robin and Joseph Sedivy; as well as by her grandchildren, David (Ashley), Jayme (Matt), Ryder (Shelbie), Dakota (Karissa), Austin (Hope), Cameron (Alyssa), Ryan (Sadie); and great-grandchildren, Landon, Adalyn, Madison, Kabry, Kasydee, Paislee, Lyla, Princeton, Maverick and Shane. Her church family was always specially treasured by Annie Ruth, and she quietly impacted the lives of countless children, young people, and adults over many decades of local church service and ministry. Even in her later years, she often demonstrated her appreciation and enjoyment of good preaching, good music and cherished fellowship at church.

The family will receive visitors at Grace Baptist Church, 23814 River Road, North Dinwiddie, VA, on Thursday, July 14, 2022 from 6:00-8:00pm and host a celebration of life service, conducted by Pastor Raleigh Nunnally at the same location on Friday, July 15, 2022 at 1:00pm. Charles Robert Woods, 90, of Chester, VA, passed away on July 6, 2022. He was the son of the late David Leon Woods and Louise Anderson Woods. He was also preceded in death by his brother, David Woods.

Charles was a United States Navy Veteran. He retired after 28 years from Defense General Supply Center as an Engineer.

He was a member and elder at Centralia Presbyterian Church and a member of The Gideons International.

Raymond Michael Brewer, Jr. March 1, 1980 - July 4, 2022

Raymond M. Brewer, 42, of Prince George, Virginia, went to be with the Lord on July 4, 2022. He was born March 1, 1980, in Newport News, VA. He was a 1998 graduate of Hopewell High School. After high school, he received a full-ride scholarship and attended Lincoln Technical School where he studied HVAC. Raymond was employed by Warwick Mechanical Group in Richmond and was a Master HVAC Tradesman. He was a hunting enthusiast that especially enjoyed waterfowl hunting with his beloved dog, Lars. The Washington Capitals certainly had a number one fan in Raymond. Everyone that knew Raymond knows he had strong opinions and wasn’t afraid to share them or one of his bad jokes.

He was the fixer of all things that broke, if he couldn’t fix it then it couldn’t be fixed. Raymond was a member of The Heights Baptist Church in Colonial Heights. Most of all, Raymond was a loving husband and father, a strong family man and provider for his family.

He will be immensely missed by his loving wife, Melissa Brewer, and their two beautiful daughters, Harper Jo and Ashlynn Rae. He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Howard & Betty Birdsong and Joseph Brewer. She was a member of Mount Calvary Baptist Church in Colonial Heights. After 45 years of dedicated service to her community, she retired as a Registered Nurse from Patrick Henry Hospital in Newport News. Dot enjoyed working in her garden and loved reading books. When her health declined and she was no longer able to read, she started listening to audiobooks.

She leaves to cherish her memory her daughter, Cynthia R. Newsome; grandson, James E. Newsome II and wife, Megan; granddaughter, Kelle Spinos and husband, Dominick; great-grandchildren, Kinsley Jo Newsome, Dominick Emmett Spinos; and other extended family members. Melinda “Tootie” Gail Ellington, 66, of Chesterfield, Virginia, passed away on Tuesday, July 12, 2022. Born on February 19, 1956, in Petersburg, Virginia, she was the daughter of the late Curtis Elmer Pritchett and Patsy Ruth Pritchett.

Before her retirement, she was a lab technician for DuPont for 37 years. Melinda loved to garden, especially tending to her flowers.

She also enjoyed making candles, painting, and playing the guitar. She loved her cat and her Ford Mustang, and was especially known for her caring, unique, and “one of a kind” personality. Melinda loved spending time with her family and will be missed by all.

She is survived by her loving husband of 37 years, Robert “Gill” Ellington of Chesterfield; her daughter whom she loved dearly, Tammy Langster of Arizona; her stepchildren, Chris Ellington of Cumberland and Michelle Ellington of Chesterfield; her sisters, Linda K. Wyatt (Ken) of DeWitt and Brenda C. Brenda was a member of Courthouse Church of Christ. She worked for Brown and Williamson before becoming an Educator with the Chesterfield County Head Start Program until her retirement. Mrs. Grant was a member of Matoaca Woman’s Club where she served as Chairman of International Affairs and organized many fundraising projects. Linda Lou Henson, 79, of South Prince George, Virginia, passed away on Wednesday, July 6, 2022. Born on October 7, 1942, in Tazwell, Virginia, she was the daughter of the late Harvey Melvin Brown and Roburley Agnes Farmer. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Clarence Eugene Henson; special companion, Bert Stevens; and her sisters, Nancy Holthouser and Lillian Culler.

She was a member of Gary’s United Methodist Church in Petersburg, Virginia. Linda also retired after 30 years of administrator work in civil service.

She is survived by her daughters, Michelle Camp (Jody), Teresa Kittilstved-Smith (Mark), and Ruby Henson; son, Hiram Henson (Barbara), Cecil Henson (Rose), Timothy Henson, Donell Henson, and Jason Henson; grandchildren, J.D. Camp (Samantha), Ashley Smith, Rebecca Camp, Danielle Smith, and Tiffany Camp; great-grandson, Joseph Daniel Camp Jr.; brother, James Brown; sisters, Rita Jo Horne and Donna Harris, numerous nieces and nephews. Her special dog Rocky.

Dorothy Jewel “Dot” Butler, 90, a lifelong resident of Matoaca, Virginia, passed away quietly on Thursday, July 7, 2022. She was born on August 29, 1931, to the late William Henry Porter and Gladys Ford Porter. She was also preceded in death by her husband of 60 years, Elmer J. “Bozo” Butler.

She is survived by her sons, Roger Butler (Ann) of Prince George, Galen Butler (Cara) of Franklin, and Whitney Butler (Sonja) of Chesterfield; and her grandchildren, Courtney, James, Knox, and Ellis.

After graduation from Petersburg High School in 1948, Mom embarked on her first career with the Life Insurance Company of Virginia. Upon marriage in 1960, she changed careers to begin raising her family.

Realizing that she needed more, and could do more, she decided at the age of 40 to pursue her passion of becoming a schoolteacher. With her boys at home ages 5, 8, and 10, she became a full-time college student, first at John Tyler, then continuing at Virginia State. She earned her bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Virginia State and taught first grade at Harrowgate Elementary School for 19 years!

Our mother was a woman of strong faith, active in her church and community, never met anyone she couldn’t talk with, and was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother.

Her example of a life well lived in ministry to others is an inspiration to us all.

April worked for John B. Denson D.D.S. as an office manager and dental assistant for many years. An avid gardener, she enjoyed her time spent working on her flowers. She also loved taking care of all kinds of different animals.

Pauline Stalder Cox, 102, of Colonial Heights passed away on Wednesday, July 6, 2022. Born in Guysville, Ohio on September 3, 1919, she was the youngest daughter of the late Otto and Susan Stalder, and was also preceded in death by her husband, Warren Adkins Cox; and grandson, Christopher Liam Leavell.

Graduate of Parkersburg High School in West Virginia, she went on to study chemistry at West Virginia Wesleyan College. After college, she spent time in Philadelphia working for Du Pont was a USO Hostess during World War II. Married in 1947, Pauline and her husband lived all around the country, having each of her children born in different states.

For nearly 25 years, she was an active Red Cross volunteer, a Reach to Recovery volunteer for cancer, and in the past, was a volunteer at Southside Regional Medical Center. She was also an active member of the Colonial Heights Federated Women’s Club, the Colonial Heights Republican Club, and a willing participant in events at First Christian Church in Petersburg.

After spending 13 years as a stay-at-home mom, she worked for Zurbrugg Memorial Hospital in Riverside, New Jersey as a dietician. Later, she was cafeteria manager for Palmyra School cafeterias in Palmyra, NJ. She also worked as a technician for Philadelphia Health Department in the city laboratory.

She loved her country and appreciated the many opportunities she was offered throughout her life. She dearly loved her husband, children, grandchildren and many friends and wants no sorrow expressed over her passing.

She is survived by her four children, James Warren Cox and wife, Linda, Robertt Stephen Cox, Jennifer Cox Ledogar, Susan Cox Leavell, four grandchildren, Kristin Schwader and husband, Paul, Rebecca Thienel and husband, Daniel, Stephanie Turner and husband, Nathan, Michael Ledogar and wife, Sydney; nine great-grandchildren, Jonah Thienel, Jackson Thienel, James Thienel, Caleb Schwader, Elijah Schwader, Adriana Turner, Gemma Turner, Noah Turner, Kellen Leavell; numerous nieces, nephews and other extended family members.

Mr. Charles Adam Dugger, Sr., 82, of Petersburg, entered into eternal rest on Friday, July 8, 2022 at Bon Secours Memorial Regional Medical Center, Mechanicville, VA. Charles affectionately know as “Uncle Charlie or Chuck”, was born September 18, 1939 to the late Robert and Viola Stith Dugger. He was preceded in death by his brothers, William Green, Sr., Rev. James Dugger, Walter Dugger, Norman Dugger and John Dugger; and his sisters, Margarite Dugger, Rosa Mae Dugger, Doris Jones, Viola Suber and Josephine Johnson.

He graduated from Peabody High School in 1960.

He was likable, artistic, a stylish dresser and he loved to cook. Charles moved to Baltimore, MD and later to West Hollywood, CA, with his son to be near his late brother, Norman Dugger (who worked for the late “Queen of Soul”, Aretha Franklin).

Charles opened a restaurant in West Hollywood under the name of Chuck’s Kitchen, where he got the name Chuck. Charles returned to Petersburg and was employed by the City of Petersburg in Public Works where he retired. He was a painter by trade.

Charles leaves to cherish his loving and dedicated memories: his son, Charles A. Dugger, Jr. (Lanay) and daughter, Tia Dugger both of Baltimore, MD; grandson, Tevin Dugger (Toni); great grandchildren, Kendall Dugger, Tevin Dugger, Jr., and Azairrh Dugger, and a step-son, Kory Gregory all of Baltimore, MD. May 14, 1960 - July 11, 2022 Richard S. Walsh, 62, of Colonial Heights VA, gained his angel wings on July 11, 2022 at Bon Secours Hospice House in Midlothian.

Richard was born in Petersburg, VA, to Sterling R. Walsh and Alvora J. Davis Walsh on May 14, 1960. He went to school but later received his GED. He met his wife Tammie Padgett of 39 years in 1979, and they married on July 21, 1983 in Colonial Heights, VA. Richard was employed VDOT for many years and later worked for Chesterfield County where he later retired in 2015.

Richard was preceded in death by dad, Sterling Walsh and his daughter, Samantha Townsend.

Richard is survived by his wife, Tammie Walsh; daughter, Tamra Jones and John Jones; son Ryan Lawrence; sister, Katie Fox; sister, Juanita Walsh and David Lamb; brother, Russell Walsh; mother, Alvora; grandchildren, Thomas, Justin, James, Nevaeh, Maycie, and Ricki; brother-in- law, William; several nieces, nephews great nieces, and great nephews; and a host of cousins, other relatives and PLENTY OF FRIENDS! Richard was an amazing father and papa to all of his kids and grandkids. They were his life; he did everything with them growing up! He was a family man all the way he loved spending time with his family. He loved EVERYBODY that’s just who he was!! He had so many friends, because he was just the type who made friends everywhere he went! He never met a stranger.

Melvin Loman, Jr.

February 16, 1927 - July 7, 2022 Mr. Melvin Loman, Jr. was born on February 16, 1927, in Ozark, AL, to Melvin and Catherine Franklin Loman, Sr. Melvin was called home on Thursday, July 7, 2022, at his daughter, Donna’s home with his family by his side.

Melvin grew up in Ozark, AL with his parents and brother. Melvin graduated from Ozark Colored High School (D. A. Smith School). He received a Bachelor’s degree from Tuskegee University. Melvin was drafted into the Army in WWII and served three years. After being Honorably Discharged from the Army, he decided to further his education with one of his passions. He attended school in Kansas to receive an Electrical Engineering degree, which he used to wire his entire house. Following the completion of the degree, he taught school in Ozark. He moved his family to Albany, GA, in 1958 and began working as a Federal Employee on the Marine Corps Depot of Supplies, Albany, GA. Melvin would further his career and was hired as a U.S. Post Office Mail Carrier for years where he was promoted to supervisor. He remained there for over 40 years until he retired.

Melvin Loman, Jr. and Mary Jean Colvin were united in holy matrimony on August 24, 1949, in Ozark. From that union, they were blessed with four children, Kathy, Melva, Donna, and Michael. Following the birth of their second child, Melvin and Mary moved to Albany to establish a new residence.

At an early age, Melvin was baptized at the Sardis Baptist Church in Ozark. He was very active with his church as he was growing in his faith journey. Upon moving to Albany, GA, he joined Friendship Baptist Church where he was a dedicated member for over 50 plus years. As a devoted member of Friendship Baptist Church, Melvin served as deacon, a member of the finance committee, Sunday School teacher, and a member of the Baptist Training Union. In 2017, he and his wife relocated to Virginia, to reside with Donna they joined Tabernacle Baptist Church in Petersburg, VA. Melvin’s favorite hobbies included fishing, working in the yard, boating on his various boats, and talking to his grandchildren. As technology evolved Melvin had to have the latest technology, computer, camera, and cell phone. Family being one of his favorite interests prompted him to start researching and learning about family heritage. He would make many trips to explore his family roots. He also researched and established a detailed family tree with pictures, names and places of birth and death. He was the family historian.

His favorite songs include: “In the Garden” and “A String of Pearls”.

Melvin was preceded into death by his “favorite girl” (his wife), Mary Jean Colvin Loman; father, Melvin Loman, Sr.; mother, Catherine Franklin Loman; brother, Willie Clyde Loman; in-laws, Thomas and Flora Colvin; sister-in-law, Florine Colvin; brothers-in-law, Thomas Colvin Jr. and Lewis Evans; and his sister-in-law Alma Colvin.

He leaves to cherish his memories: four children, Kathy Blackwell (Willie) of Atlanta, GA, Melva Chambers (John Jr.) of Greensboro, NC, Donna Wells of Petersburg, VA, and Michael Loman (Edith) of Keansburg, NJ; nine grandchildren, Crystal Blackwell, April Blackwell, John Chambers III (Cynthia), MacKenzie Kennedy (Christopher), Erica Jackson, Don Wells II, Eric Wells, Michael Loman, Jr., and Manolo Loman; six great-grandchildren, Emani Jackson, Logan Jackson, Titus Kennedy, Tobin Kennedy, Tegan Kennedy, and Mina Kennedy; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends. Bunny is survived by his partner, Patricia Everett; son, Kenard Williams and daughter, Teona Henderson; fifteen grandchildren; brothers, Wilton Creighton (Althria) of Chesterfield, Virginia, and Ricky Creighton (Patricia) of Petersburg, VA; devoted Cousins, Thomas Creighton; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends. Bunny was also a great father to his four bonus children and grandson, “Buck-Buck”.

Annie Irene Powell Blunt, was born on September 4, 1928 to the late Annie Mae Tennessee and Willie “Buck” Powell in Adams Grove, VA. God needed another angel so He lovingly called her home on July 5, 2022 at home in Hopewell, VA. Annie accepted Christ at an early age and attended Pleasant Grove Baptist Church, Adams Grove, VA. She was preceded in death by her lifelong sweetheart Charlie William Blunt, Sr. upon marrying she moved her membership to Pleasant Plain Baptist Church, Drewryville, VA. She was a faithful and dedicated church member.

Annie served the Lord as a deacon, Sunday School teacher, usher and kitchen committee member. Upon moving to Newsoms, VA, she joined Mount Tabor Baptist Church and was well known for reading poems and occasionally sang with the Women’s Day choir.

Annie was employed by the Southampton County School Board for twelve years and two months as a school bus driver and cafeteria worker. She enjoyed reading her Bible, listening to spiritual and Country & Western music, traveling, cooking hot rolls, cakes and pies mostly spending time with her family. She was a devoted wife and mother. She was a blessing and was loved by many.

Samuel E. Crenshaw, Jr.

On July 5, 2022, God called our beloved son, brother and uncle, Kevin Christopher Claiborne to his heavenly home. He will be welcomed by his brother, Kenneth Jay and his Grandparents Emuel Powell, Sr. and Notice Powell and Harry and Verlie Claiborne.

Kevin was baptized at an early age at Poplar Mount Baptist Church, Lawrenceville, Virginia, and later moved his membership to the Tabernacle Baptist Church of Petersburg, Virginia.

In 1989, Kevin graduated from Brunswick County High School to attend St. Paul’s College of Lawrenceville, Virginia. It was there he obtained his Bachelor’s degree. From there he went on the Southside Virginia Community College and obtained his Applied Arts Degree in Electricity. He went on to obtain a Master’s degree in Healthcare Administration from Bellevue University.

Kevin was also a skilled entrepreneur which encompassed a Cleaning Service Business, Electrical Services, and his love of music as a DJ. He is survived by his parents, Joe Earl and Deloise P. Claiborne; his niece, Ebonee Simone Claiborne; nephew, Kobe Claiborne and sisterin-love, Cindy Claiborne; aunts, Wilma Johnson of Emporia, Virginia, Audrey Brown of Richmond, Virginia, and Lue Ethel Croom-Powell of Harrisburg, Pennsylvania; uncles, Emuel Powell, Jr. of Steelton, Pennsylvania, James McCoy Powell of (Gertrude) of Hampton, Virginia, Wilbur Powell of Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, George and Tyrone (Donetta) of Richmond, Virginia, JC Claiborne of Baltimore, Maryland, Buford Claiborne of Emporia, Virginia, and Reverend Bobby Claiborne of Prince George, Virginia; devoted friends, Derrick Easter and Benjamin “Butch” Barnwell III; as well as a host of loving cousins and family friends.

Mr. Samuel Crenshaw, Jr., affectionately known as “Sam Junior”, of 500 Farmer Street, Apartment 402 (Gillhaven), Petersburg, VA, entered peacefully into eternal rest on July 4, 2022 at his residence. He was born on September 26, 1946 to the late Samuel Crenshaw, Sr. and Rosa Hendricks Crenshaw.

He was a product of the Petersburg School System and retired from the Southside Virginia Training Center with 33 years of faithful and dedicated service.

Sam Junior joined Third Baptist Church on June 16, 2002. He was a member of the men’s ministry, trustee board, sexton, groundskeeper, and Sunday school.

Also, preceding Samuel in death was his one son, Keil Alston; one grandson, Keontae Emon Crenshaw; grandparents, Samuel Crenshaw and Gertrude Moore Crenshaw, Mack and Elizabeth Hendricks; a cousin, friend, and mentor, Reverend Leroy A. Cherry.

Sam Junior leaves to cherish his memory: two sons, Kenneth Crenshaw and Kevin Crenshaw (Lakeisha) and one daughter, Kim Crenshaw; one sister, Stephanie Olds; numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces and nephews; and a host of cousins, other relatives and friends, a very dedicated friend and brother, Horace Campbell.

Services will be held 1:00 P.M., Saturday, July 16, 2022 at Third Baptist Church, 550 Farmer Street, Petersburg, the Rev. Jameson K. McLaughlin, eulogist. The interment to follow at Blandford Cemetery.

Ms. Theresa Juanita Thacker Jackson Taylor November 24, 1984 - July 4, 2022

Theresa Taylor was called home Monday, July 4, 2022, to be with the lord. Theresa was born on November 24th, 1984, and was a resident of the state of California. Until she later moved to the state of Virginia with her mother Ivy Darlene Thacker.

Theresa was a resident and student in the Hampton roads area. She attended Aberdeen Elementary school where she was one of the only girl football players on a team full of boys and did quite well at this sport. Theresa also was certified as a PCA and did private home care for several patients and was a loving caretaker of her clients.

Mrs. Taylor took up modeling in her early 20s and enjoyed this very much, despite her height she would strive hard to prove herself to be just as good if not better than the taller models.

Theresa’s life is remembered through her surviving family, her children, Elmore Leon Taylor III, Tamara Taylor, Darrell Taylor, and Nature Taylor. Her sister Kristian Powell. She is preceded by her husband Elmore Taylor Jr, her mother Ivy Darlene Thacker, and her stepfather William Frank Powell, Also a host of uncles, aunts, nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends who loved her dearly.

Theresa was a loving wife and mom who cared dearly for her family and friends. There was never a stranger is her eyes. Her family is saddened by the sudden passing of this amazing and strong woman and we know that she truly be missed but never forgotten.

Ms. Gloria D. Armstrong, of Richmond, VA., entered into a peaceful rest on Wednesday, July 6, 2022 at Winthrop Manor Nursing Home.

Gloria Davis Armstrong was born February 24, 1953 to William Davis and Mattie Burrow Davis in Stony Creek (Sussex County) Virginia. She was the youngest of two children. She was baptized at an early age at Little Bethel Baptist Church in Dinwiddie, VA. Gloria attended Petersburg Public Schools and was a proud graduate of Petersburg High School’s Class of 1971. She went on to earn a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics from Morgan State University in 1977. Upon graduating, she moved to Houston, Texas, her home away from home, and later began working for NASA (National Aeronautics and Space Administration).

Gloria was a social butterfly and enjoyed engaging with her classmates, family and friends. She was passionate about her family, her community, and of course math and science. Gloria was always a big advocate for technology and made sure to stay current with the latest devices. Gloria also loved to cook and self-authored a cookbook called Key Ingredients to Loving Yourself.

Gloria earned her heavenly wings on the morning of Wednesday, July 6, 2022. She was preceded in death by her father, William Davis and her mother, Mattie Burrow Davis.

She leaves to celebrate her life and fondest memories, her beloved son, Kernis Armstrong of Baltimore, MD; sister, Celestine Hicks of Chester, VA; nephew, Rodney Hicks (Jennifer) of Midlothian, VA; great-niece Jazmin Hicks of Harrisonburg, VA, and aunt, Justine Burrow Jackson of Petersburg, VA, along with a host of cousins, friends, and classmates.

Our beloved mother, Ms. Alice May Edwards Heath Jones, 91, of Petersburg, VA, was called home to glory on the morning of Monday, July 11, 2022, into the arms of Our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. She resided at August of Richmond Healthcare in Henrico County, VA. Alice was born in Prince George County, VA to Harvey Edwards and Elizabeth (Hill) Edwards on May 12, 1931. She attended Union Branch School in Prince George, VA and went on to earn her GED. Alice worked many jobs in the Healthcare Field to include: Nursing and Housekeeping Services at Petersburg General Hospital, a Nursing Assistant at many of the Convalescent Centers in the Petersburg and Tri-Cities area, and as a Private Duty Nursing Assistant.

Alice enjoyed cooking for her children, other family, and friends. She loved to go fishing, shop, decorate her home, and dress very nice with matching jewelry. She enjoyed helping people and loved to see them smile. She held volunteer positions as a Cafeteria Aide and School Watch Program Member in the Petersburg Public School System. She had a big heart and loving spirit.

As a faithful and longtime member of Mount Olivet Baptist Church of Petersburg, VA, Alice was very active in serving for more than 20 years on the Usher’s Ministry. She had a very strong faith and love for Our Lord Jesus Christ. She enjoyed listening to and singing spirituals.

Alice was preceded in death by her first husband, Alexander Heath, Sr. and second husband, George Jones; parents, Harvey and Elizabeth Edwards; one brother, Frank Edwards; four sisters, Doris Edwards, Marjorie Edwards, Pearl Thweatt, and Sophronia Williams; son, Alexander Heath Jr.; and daughter, Rose Heath Bell.

Alice is survived by her children, Farrell Heath (Carleen) of Petersburg, VA, Norman Heath of Petersburg, VA, Fonda Neal (John) of Henrico, VA, Yvette White (James) of Columbus, GA, and a host of grand and great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends, including Debbie Edmonson (Steve) of Prince George, VA, who Alice was blessed to provide Home Nursing Care Services to and whom she adored and considered to be not just an employer but a loving, devoted friend.
