Get Growing with an Urban Garden
FAMILY FEATURES
Urban living and lush gardens aren’t as mutually exclusive as one might assume. In fact, it’s possible to cultivate thriving gardens in even the smallest spaces. The first step toward creating a successful small garden space is planning. Sketching out your garden area with a clear understanding of the actual dimensions is important. This allows you to allocate adequate growing space for the vegetation you choose and prevent overcrowding. Part of your planning should also take climate into account. If the sun reaches your garden area, knowing what time the sun typically hits matters. Some plants are poorly equipped to handle the strength of direct afternoon rays. Other matters to consider are the soil quality and whether it is adequate to nourish vegetation. If not, you may need to excavate and refill your planting areas with nutrient-rich gardening soil. Access to water is also a concern; if you’ll be forced to water by can, avoid choosing plants that would better benefit from a thorough hose soaking.
As you begin planning the actual contents of your garden, don’t hesitate to blend edibles with beauty. Many herbs offer attractive textures and colors that can add variety to a colorful selection of flowering plants. Edible plants such as strawberries offer color from blooms (and later brightly hued fruit), as well as trailing greenery that looks pretty along the edges of potted containers.
If your goal is color, give consideration to the blooming season for your selected plants. Unless you plan to enjoy your garden for just a short season, choose a variety of plants and flowers that bloom throughout your region’s entire growing season.
Especially in the smallest garden spaces, it’s smart to make the most of vertical space. Use a trellis or other structure to encourage vining vegetation to grow upward rather than outward. Hanging baskets or buckets are ideal for inverted growth of plants such as tomatoes or peppers, and shelving or tiered plant stands are handy for creating more plant real estate in smaller garden spaces.
Beautiful gardens need not be limited to those with expansive lawns in rural communities. Though smaller in scale, urban gardens can deliver equal beauty and a surprising volume of edible bounty with proper preparation and design. Find more tips at eLivingtoday.com.

3 Tips for Creating a
Summer of Unplugged Fun
FAMILY FEATURES
Between school, work, and entertainment, there are times when screens can seem like a pervasive part of modern life. For all the positive aspects of technology, there can also be a desire for children to have stretches of unplugged learning and participate in educational activities that do not require a screen.
Why Unplugged Learning Matters
“Unplugged learning is important to balance the screen time children may experience with other forms of learning; to promote physical activities, social interaction and creativity; and develop
the essential skills that bolster them throughout their exploration and growth as individuals,” said Rurik Nackerud from KinderCare’s education team.
Summer can be an ideal time to focus on unplugged learning as it often brings a break from the traditional academic year and activities. “We want summer to be a time when children can put down technology and connect with one another face-to-face, build important creativity skills and learn how to be social with one another without the buffer of screens,” said Khy Sline

from KinderCare’s education team. “They can play, run, be immature and laugh with their friends, giggle at the silly things and find joys in those in-person interactions with one another.”
Tips for Creating Unplugged Fun as a Family
1. Get Outdoors. Make time as a family to get outside and explore, even if it’s simply a walk around the block after dinner. Help children notice the little things like a bug on the sidewalk or the way the sun filters through tree leaves to make patterns on the ground. Ask them about the things they see and give your children the space to ask questions and work together to find the answers. This helps teach children collaborative learning skills: asking questions, sharing ideas and working together to reach an answer.
2. Read Together. This could mean going to the library to check out new books or exploring your family’s bookshelves for old favorites. Snuggle up together for family story time. If children are old
enough to read on their own, invite them to read to you or their younger siblings. Talk about the story or even act out favorite parts to help your children actively participate in story time, which may help them better understand the story’s concepts.
3. Encourage Creative Thinking. Help children expand their ability to think creatively by working together to make a craft or project. For example, the next time a delivery box arrives at your home, encourage your children to turn it into something new using craft supplies on hand. A blanket could turn a box into a table for a pretend restaurant while some tape or glue could transform it into a rocket ship or train. When everyone’s done creating and playing, the box can be broken down for recycling. This activity can help children literally think outside of the box and apply their own unique ideas and creativity to create something new. A Matter of Heart and Sole
BY CHAI GALLAHUN | LNNUSA.COM
Anyone visiting Fort Gregg-Adams (formerly Fort Lee) will immediately notice that there are a lot of people in uniform walking– everywhere. Many of them have just arrived at the base from their branch’s Basic Training, and that initial training for military service members demands a great deal of physical activity, including high-
impact running and marching. While the military may be excellent at sizing combat boots to new recruits, there is much more to orthopedics, the branch of medicine focused on the prevention or correction of physical damage and aberrations of the skeletal

HEART
system and associated muscles, joints, and ligaments.
It’s not hard to imagine recruits arriving at Fort Gregg-Adams with discomfort and injuries in their feet, ankles, and legs. That said, career service members may develop orthopedic issues from wear and tear over the years as well. If you suffer from foot and ankle pain or discomfort, there is a local option to address it quickly: My Foot Guy, located at the PXtra Troop Mall on Fort Gregg-Adams.
My Foot Guy is owned and operated by Bryan Acheson, Certified Pedorthist & Therapeutic Shoe Fitter. What is a credentialed pedorthist?
According to Merriam-Webster, it is someone who specializes in the art and practice of designing, making, and fitting therapeutic shoes for relieving painful or disabling conditions of the feet. The Pedorthic Footcare Association defines the role more broadly as a specialist in using footwear - which includes shoes, shoe modifications, foot orthoses, and other pedorthic devices - to solve problems in, or related to, the foot and lower limb.
Acheson will tell you that he has a passion for helping people and truly cares about the impact he has on people’s lives. “I wanted to make overcoming foot, knee, hip, and low back pain easy, convenient, and educate them on their condition(s).”
For him, the game is not just “afoot”- it’s everyone’s feet, from those of military trainees and career service members to veterans, high school athletes, and retirees. Orthopedic conditions can affect people of all backgrounds
and ages, and they may not even realize what is causing their pain and discomfort.
“Most people simply just don’t know what they’re experiencing or how to solve it,” said Acheson, adding that many people see a podiatrist and are in-and-out with no real education or guidance other than custom orthotics. Others may choose a retailer only to see a wall of insoles and footwear, typically with no trained and knowledgeable staff to guide them to the right insole or footwear type, much less properly size the footwear. He added that other places people may choose are likely quite expensive while also not properly trained or certified to make recommendations about their feet.
Fortunately for the Fort Gregg-Adams and Tri-Cities community, there is an option for more knowledgeable and personalized help with your feet. The My Foot Guy shop has advanced technology ideal for finding the right fit for people in need of pedorthic attention. According to Acheson, in-store customers can be assisted in as little as 20-30 minutes. He can also go mobile to a home or business, and those mobile appointments take about an hour. At My Foot Guy’s brick-and-mortar store, no appointments are required, and walk-ins are always welcome. Acheson emphasized that helping people is his passion, certainly a matter of both heart and sole.
My Foot Guy is located in the heart of the PXtra Troop Mall at 1431 Sustainment (formerly Mahone) Avenue on Fort Gregg-Adams. For more information, call 804-821-1321. Nonmilitary folks are welcome to get a visitor’s pass at the main gate for entry onto the base.

For most of her life, Thibodeau has been part of the ensemble — dancing, speaking, and singing from a script. It has only been in recent years that she has listened to herself, to her original inner voice, and began to translate her wide range of experiences into her own music. Her debut album Let It Leave, set to release in May 2020 on EggHunt Records, was recorded in January of 2018 at Trace Horse Studios in Nashville, TN. The songs celebrate the joys and complications of a liminal life — balancing between freedom and stability, falling into and out of love, and trusting yourself through the noise of other people’s expectations.
