City May Sell Public Green Space Popular Public Park Could Soon Be Taken from Public PETERSBURG

PETERSBURG- A popular city green space may soon be under private ownership.

On June 7th, the Petersburg Department of Economic Development recommended the city sell the green space located at the corner of Market Street and High Street to William Nicholson. A public hearing has been scheduled for Tuesday, June 21st at 5:00pm in the Petersburg Public Library, when council will decide whether or not to authorize acting City Manager Kenneth Miller to execute a purchase agreement for the park.

The sale of city property is nothing new, but the sale of an area that has served the downtown area as a park is not commonplace. The city’s Disposition Guidelines for City Owned Real-Estate Property, adopted in December of 2020, clearly defines the process for such sales.

The first step defined in the process requires that the “Department of Economic Development (DED) Staff submits a request through the City Manager to City Council for the approval of a Resolution authorizing the City Manager to market and offer for sale specified Cityowned real estate property.”

council to authorize the City Manager not to market the property to the general public as a for-sale property but rather to authorize the City Manager to enter into a purchase agreement with a specific individual.

Step three of the guidelines establishes the DED’s responsibility to solicit proposals, but it requires them to market the property as wella step not taken in this circumstance. In addition, the disposition guidelines designated the DED as overseeing the process and ultimately submitting the request based on the requirement that the sale is based on an economic development proposal for a project.

Section 3B of the guide-

line states, “A Development Agreement requirement which requires the purchaser to submit a Development Agreement that is reviewed and approved by Council which describes the proposed development and use of the property.”

The purchase of this purchase agreement is not for an economic development project, which is, according to Fenton Bland, Vice-Chair of the City’s Planning Commission, a reason the sale should fall under the overview of the Planning Commission.

He said it is crucial that the city maintain as much public green space as possible. As to the sale of the property, Bland said, “There’s no advantage. None whatsoever.”

He stated that he thinks the property should go to Planning so that they can review the property’s long-term use in relation to the comprehensive plan, a stipulation of the guideline stated in section 2.b under Assessment Criteria.

LNN reached out to Nicholson who agreed to an interview after the June 21st public hearing.

Discussion of the potential sale on social media sites have reflected opinions both in favor and opposed to the sale of the popular green space to an individual.

The proposal made by Nicholson states that he is requesting to add this property to his adjacent residential property and maintain it as “open space”. Those opposed to the sale point out the sale would make it private property and that the wording of the proposal does not guarantee that it would be public “open space”.

Petersburg’s new Director of Economic Development Brian Moore told LNN that his department recommended the sale because the citizen had put in the request and

had been maintaining it but that ultimately the city council would decide the fate of the property. While Nicholson had been maintaining the property for the last two years, the High Street Association had maintained the property for several years prior. When asked about the fact that citizens will lose guaranteed access to the property if the sale goes through, Moore said that he will make sure that issue is addressed during the June 21st meeting.

LNN reached out to all seven city councilors, the Interim City Manager, and the city’s Communications Director for comment; neither the Interim City Manager nor city councilors responded to the request.

Communications Director Joanne Williams informed LNN that she forwarded the request for comment to the city’s FOIA officer; after LNN reiterated that the request was for comment and not for documentation, no further communication has been received from Williams or from councilors.

The new guidelines for the sale of city property were adopted in December of 2020 to establish a clear and concise overview of property sales for the benefit of the city and its residents. An approval by council authorizing the acting city manager to execute a purchase agreement on the Market Street property could set a new precedent on future sales of city property,

returning the city to a more subjective approach to the decision-making process. By these standards any individual or organization could attempt to purchase any city property for any reason without an economic development plan for the property, leaving approval of such sales to the subjective judgment of the sitting council members at the time of the proposal.

For now, the fate of an unofficial and popular public park remains in the hands of the city council. Citizens interested in supporting or opposing the sale may voice their opinion at a public hearing set for Tuesday, June 21st at 5:00pm at the Petersburg Public Library.

Public Safety Officials Respond to Bear Sighting in Appomattox River

HOPEWELL– Numerous police and animal control officers along with the Hopewell Bureau of Fire converged in the area of the 300 block of Riverside Avenue on Sunday, June 12th, many running through yards to the river.

They were on a rescue mission, but it wasn’t just any ordinary response.

Instead public safety representatives were searching for a bear swimming in the Appomattox River.

Police Chief Antonio A.J. Starke said the response was necessary to protect the safety of the public, which included families and young children enjoying the Sunday morning at City Park where they swim and have fun. At the time the bear sighting call came in at 10:36am, local officials did not know where the bear would make landfall.

“It was absolutely about protecting our citizens and ensuring their safety,” Starke noted.

Animal Control Supervisor Amanda Hoak went to the helipad behind John Randolph Medical Center from where the initial call came in. She too saw the beer swimming from the Ches-

terfield area into Hopewell.

She coordinated a response in direct and constant communication with Department of Wildlife Resources biologists to ensure the right course of action.

According to the Department of Wildlife Resources, bear home ranges must include food, water, cover, denning sites, and diverse habitats. They prefer habitat that provides cover, such as a densely wooded mature oak forests or swampy areas in the coastal plain, and easily accessible food sources.

When the Virginia Department of Wildlife Resources is called because bears are eating at birdfeeders, dog food bowls, and garbage cans in back yards, or found wandering on the Washington and Old Dominion (W&OD) Trail in Fairfax County, the state agency focuses on managing the people rather than the bears.

“The biologist recommended we find the bear where it makes landfall and then corral it into a wooded area where it was expected the large animal would then bed down in its more natural habitat. We made noises and worked to follow the bear into a large wooded area entering Prince George County,” Hoak recalled.

“We discussed the plan with Game and Inland Fishery

[Wildlife Resources] to protect the community, but also do what was best for the bear.”

A Nixel alert and other communication helped inform the public of the situation.

Once the bear was coaxed into the woods, the department did not receive any other reports of its sighting.

She praised the response team for their quick action as well as the public for responding appropriately to warnings to stay away from the bear.

“The public was so responsive, and we really appreciated that, but we understand they want to see what is happening and even see the bear themselves,” she complimented.

City government offices will be closed on Monday, June 20, 2022, in observance of the Juneteenth holiday. Offices will reopen during normal business hours on Tuesday, June 21st.

Petersburg Area Transit Administrative offices and bus service (including Para-Transit) will also be closed. Dogwood Trace Golf Course will remain open on Juneteenth during normal business hours.

Police Warn of Fentanyl-Laced Money TENNESSEE

PERRY COUNTY, TN- The Sheriff’s Office in Perry County, Tennessee recently posted a disturbing warning on its Facebook page encouraging parents to warn their children not to pick up money they see lying on the ground. Two recent incidents in Perry County both led to the discovery of meth and fentanyl folded inside cash found lying on the floor at gas stations.

While those two incidents occurred in Tennessee, the warning applies to everyone in the public. The fentanyl

epidemic is growing worse all across the country, including here in Virginia. The Virginia Department of Health recently released a report that shows a 15% increase in fatal overdoses between 2020 and 2021, and the substance that caused the most of those deaths was fentanyl.

The problem is on the rise, not just in Virginia, but across the entire country, impacting urban, suburban, and rural areas. The public is advised to be cautious if they discover money lying on the ground or floor; according to the DEA, as little as two milligrams of fentanyl can be deadly depending on body size.

Rising Costs Impact PG County Budget PRINCE GEORGE

PRINCE GEORGE– On Tuesday, June 14th, the Prince George Board of Supervisors approved several amendments to the county’s FY2023 budget.

Some changes to the budget were anticipated because of the delay in approval of the Commonwealth’s budget in the General Assembly, but these changes were not because the final figures of the state’s budget are now complete. Instead, in some cases, these amendments were expected due to increasing costs.

“When it comes to Child Services Act, as we do every year include a “guestimate” of the cost to provide such services,” Board Vice Chairman Donald Hunter explained. “These costs continue to rise, and with the current economy, it was

no real surprise that the numbers would have to be changed.”

The elected officials passed an appropriation of funds for Fiscal Year 2022-2023 for the Children’s Services Act; the cost is $100,000 total, but with state-provided funding of $53,354, the county’s portion amounted to $46,646. Betsy Drewry, Deputy County Administrator for Finance, presented the matter to the board during its Tuesday evening, June 15th meeting.

The Board also authorized the General Services Department to complete a grant application to the Department of Environmental Quality for partial funding of the Annual Clean Community Day Event set for April 2023.

The event is a yearly community-wide cleanup effort where everything from tires and other used items are brought in for recycling and secure document shredding

Another budget amendment and transfer took monies from General Fund Contingency of $78,000 for the Riverside Regional Jail end-of-year projected budget deficit. Drewry explained that the funding was to cover increases in prisoner count and the cost of raising the per diem for housing state inmates at the regional facility.

Also, the Board unanimously approved an award of contract in the amount of $69,790.39 with Atlantic Emergency Solutions for a fire hose.

Hunter explained that some of the current hoses are outdated, stating, “[T] he last thing we would want is to have outdated equipment that could result in injuries to the firefighters, or it affecting the water pressure that could result in the inability to get a fire under control.”

Another area of the county budget addressed Tuesday night was the salaries for local constitutional officers, line items that could also increase. “The county is waiting for numbers to determine compensation for constitutional officers,” Hunter explained.”That’s where we would be most impacted with those employees including sheriff, clerk of the circuit court, commonwealth’s attorney, commissioner of revenue, and treasurer.”

These five positions, created and outlined by the Constitution of Virginia, perform governmental duties at the local level, and the local governing body must fund a portion of each of the positions’ salaries.

Once the state completes the final numbers, county supervisors and staff will review the budget again and determine if any additional changes are necessary.

PETERSBURG— On June 10th and 11th, crowds of people converged at the intersection of Halifax Street and South Avenue in the heart of the city for the annual Halifax Music Festival. The Petersburg tradition featured a variety of vendors ranging from delicious barbecue to a local author.

Weston Manor to Receive $100K Welcome Center HOPEWELL

HOPEWELL— At Weston Manor, located high on the sloping banks of the Appomattox River, members and supporters gathered for the annual Historic Hopewell Foundation awards banquet on Thursday, June 9th. In addition to its annual awards, the event presented the perfect opportunity- and perfect location- to announce the approval of funding for a new Historic Hopewell Foundation project.

Virginia State Senator Joe Morrissey took the microphone at the event, announcing an important improvement to the historic manor’s legacy. He told the crowd that historic foundations, land conservancies, land conservation funds, historic designations, and historic district plans were important causes to him.

“Because there is something very—not only eternal, but very noble— in

preserving our past,” said Morrissey.

The senator described being told that Weston Manor needed to have a welcoming center on the property as a separate structure, and that the cost would be $100,000, which would cover all expenses.

Morrissey continued, explaining that he and Delegate Carrie Coyner worked together to introduce a budget amendment to secure the necessary funding for the welcome center.

“I’m happy to share with you that Budget Item 386 No. 11C that allocated $100,000 for the welcoming center here at the Weston Manor has been approved, and the money budgeted,” declared Morrissey.

Morrissey closed by emphasizing how important Weston Manor is, not only to Hopewell, but to the surrounding areas as well.

The Historic Hopewell Foundation expects to receive the funding for the welcome center in 2023.

Petersburg Sheriff ’s Office Offers DrunkBusters Program for Drivers PETERSBURG MEDIA RELEASE PETERSBURG SHERIFF’S OFFICE

PETERSBURG- The Petersburg Sheriff ’s Office participated in the City of Petersburg’s Children’s Day on June 12, 2022, at the Petersburg Sports Complex.

The theme of the program was “Investing in our Future means investing in Our Children”. This event was an opportunity for the Sheriff ’s Office to give back to the community by providing the DrunkBuster Program.

This program is an alcohol impairment, fatigue, distracted driving, and drug impairment simulator. The program uses simulated goggles to educate young people and adults about the potential dangers of drunk driving, impaired driving, sleep deprivation, and distracted driving. Utilizing vision distorting lenses, the DrunkBuster goggles simulate the effects of alcohol consumption on the body or the use of marijuana.

The goggles will allow the participant to experience the effects of reduced alertness, delayed reaction time, confusion, visual distortion, alteration of depth and distance perception, reduced peripheral vision, double vision, and lack of muscle

coordination. Combining the goggles with otherwise simple participant tasks like walking the line, picking up coins, setting objects on a table and we created engaging and effective impairment demonstrations that won’t be forgotten soon.

The DrunkBuster Program has helped in other communities to create a rewarding partnership between the public and law enforcement.

This program will help the community to work towards keeping the roads safe by learning how to prevent drunk driving, impaired,

and distracted driving.

The most effective way to stop these acts from happening is to prevent them from happening in the first place. We all share the roads and we must all work to keep them safe. DrunkBuster’s support enforcement and education efforts help all drivers understand the risks of driving drunk and how to make responsible decisions that ensure their safety, as well as the safety of others on the road.

Cavs, Crusaders Advance to ECBL Title Game

ROCK HILL, NC – The final four teams in the hunt for the 2022 East Coast Basketball League title converged on Rock Hill, South Carolina on Saturday, June 11th. The number one seed Petersburg Cavaliers faced off against the Hickory Hoyas in the early game, while the Carolina Crusaders matched up against the Carolina Thunder in the late game. Both games showcased the distinct and different styles of the two conferences. The Mid-South Conference final saw strong defensive play and dominating individual performances including a forty-four-point game by the Cavaliers’ Elijah Moore. The Southern Conference final showcased a more fast-paced, coast to coast style of play with fewer half court offensive sets and mostly transitional defense.

Both games proved competitive as each matchup faced several lead changes. In the end, the Cavaliers would pull away from the Hoyas and the Crusaders would overcome a double-digit deficit to win their game– setting up for a clash of styles in the championship game in Petersburg on the 18th.

CAVALIERS vs.

HOYAS The first game pitted the Cavs against the only team to hand them a loss this season- the Hoyas. The earlier loss saw the Cavs travelling to Hickory without one of their key players, Elijah Moore. A questionable no-call to end the game and some spirited post-game social media celebration by the Hoyas set up a rivalry matchup that was well worth the price of admission.

The Hoyas opened with the hot hands, going on a 7-0 run in the first minutes of the game. The Cavs opened differently, going 0-6 on their opening possessions and 0-4 from the line. Later, the Cavs made a 7-3 run of their own to start drawing the Hoyas back. But an explosive performance by Isiah Cureton saw the Hickory forward fire up 14 points in the first quarter alone.

Four different Hoyas added from beyond the arc, nailing 6 three pointers in the first as well. Still, the Cavs were able to keep it close, finishing the first quarter down just six points, 31 to 26.

By the 8:21 mark in the second, the Hoyas built a 14 point lead up 44 to 30. But the Cavs applied relentless pressure defense and erased the double-digit deficit with a 36-13 run, finishing the half up 66 to 57. And while the Hoyas had put up 10

three pointers by the half, the Cav’s Moore had posted 29 points of his own at the same time, effectively offsetting the rain of Hoyas threes.

In the third, the Cavs seemed to be putting the game away with an 11-6 run to start the second half.

But as quickly as the Cavs’ double-digit lead appeared, the Hoyas stormed back. By the 4:07 mark, the Hoyas had tied it up at 77 all, then pushing out to an 89 to 85 lead to close out the third.

Again, the Cavs pressured the ball, shifting a four-point deficit to a fourpoint lead by the 6:57 mark in the fourth quarter. The lead changed again late in the fourth before the Cavs’ relentless defense and opportunistic buckets in transition posted a 106 to 102 lead with under five left in the game. extended their lead to eleven with under two minutes. The Hoyas began to foul on defense and fire beyond the arc on offense, nailing the first two attempts. But in the end the continued dominating defense and solid shooting from the line gave the Cavs a 123 to 115 victory and a ticket to the Championship Game.

The Hoyas’’ Keandre Marion posted an explosive third adding 24 points in the quarter on his way to a game total 31 points. Danny Sanders added 26 points including seven beyond the arc. The Cavaliers Walter Williams finished with 28 points including two crucial three-point shots late in the fourth quarter.

THUNDER vs.

CRUSADERS The second game saw sluggish shooting in the opening quarter of play. Both teams would settle down as the game saw multiple lead changes. The Thunder would nail 10 three pointers early on, five coming from Matthew Todd on a twentysix-point first half individual performance. Todd would finish with 29 points on the evening, adding only one three pointer in the second half.

The Crusader’s Ryan Scott would post 16 points in the first half while Quan Prowell would add ten points, keeping the Crusaders within striking distance but still down 14 points, 69

to 55 at the half.

The Thunder and Crusaders met twice in the regular season with the Thunder pulling out decisive victories in both games. On April 24th, the Thunder crushed the Crusaders 156-118 and on May 15th pulled out a narrower victory 121 to 118.

With the perennial ECBL powerhouse PrimeTime Players knocked out by the Crusaders, the Thunder were the favorites to clinch the Southern Conference seat to the big game. But the Crusaders had already toppled one giant in the playoffs,

PrimeTime, and were about to do it again.

With five minutes remaining in the third period, the Crusaders had managed to overcome the double-digit Thunder lead and pull within four points before Deon Berrien drained a three, pushing the Thunder back out to 79 to 72.

The Crusaders remained in hot pursuit, pulling within one point of the Thunder at the 8:56 mark of the fourth quarter, 91-90. The Crusaders finally took the lead with 8:01 on the clock only to lose it again on the next posses-

The Crusaders went on to outscore the Thunder 28 to 12 in the fourth quarter, securing their spot in the ECBL Championship game Saturday, June 18th in Petersburg.

Chili Peppers Slip to Second-Place Tie in Division COLONIAL HEIGHTS

COLONIAL HEIGHTS- After an up and down series of games, the Tri-City Chili Peppers have lost their hold on the top spot in the East Division of the Coastal Plain League, slipping to the number two spot in a tie with the Morehead City Marlins. Both teams are 9-5 for the season so far, with the Wilson Tobs just a step ahead at 10-5.

On Thursday, June 9th, the Peppers lost ten to zero to the rival Peninsula Pilots on Pilots’ home turf, but the team was able to turn it around for a home game on Friday, June 10th against the Wilson Tobs, defeating the Tobs fourteen to eleven.

The Tobs were tied with the Chili Peppers for first place in the division going into Friday night’s game, meaning the stakes were high, especially since the first matchup between the two teams this season ended in a loss for the Peppers.

On Saturday, June 11th, the Chili Peppers suffered another defeat, this time by the Morehead City Marlins.

The Peppers struggled at

bat, but a solid rotation of pitchers in the last four innings of the game kept the Marlins at bay; they ultimately won only three to zero. Sunday delivered another win for the Peppers, this time four to two against the Pilots, closing out a rollercoaster weekend for the team. On Tuesday,

June 14th, after a brief break from back to back games, the Chili Peppers once again took the field, this time in Holly Springs, North Carolina where they faced the Salamanders. The first run of the game came in the bottom of the second when the Salamanders hit a home run, but the Chili Peppers

battled to keep up, closing out the night with a seven to four loss to the Salamanders. The Peppers will have a chance to pick themselves back up when they play the Peninsula Pilots once again on Thursday, June 16th, followed by Friday and Saturday night games this weekend.

Lucky 7 Armed Robbery: 1980 | June13, 2022

This week, the Chesterfield County/Colonial Heights Crime Solvers program needs your help to solve an armed robbery.

On June 6 at 1:45 p.m., two male suspects entered the Lucky 7 in the Pickwick Shopping Center in Colonial Heights. Once inside, one of the suspects pointed a firearm at several people inside the business while the other male jumped over the counter and stole a bag containing over $10,000 in cash and checks belonging to the business. They were last seen getting into a gold-colored, four-door vehicle and leaving the area.

EDITORIAL Editorializing a crisis on the backs of our youth is nothing short of deplorable. To add to the disdain, one only needs to weave in a political agenda. Of course, that is what America’s mainstream media has become- while presenting a façade of journalistic integrity. The case of this is no clearer than in a recent interview conducted

by ABC News.

When ABC’s Martha Raddatz interviewed survivors of the Sandy Hook school shooting, the premise seemed to provide an opportunity for both a compelling and in-depth look at the effects such a tragedy has on young victims. But that opportunity to provide insight ultimately turned to a level of shameless political posturing on behalf of the network or perhaps simply the reporter.

The students, whose first names only were revealed by ABC out of respect for their privacy, gave heart wrenching accounts of that day at Sandy Hook. They even

shared how the encounter affected them on a daily basis. Their openness provided an inside glimpse of what the survivors of Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas may be dealing with.

But that apparently wasn’t enough. Raddatz had a point to make. As a student finished telling of the anguish she felt hearing of the Texas shooting and the frustration of hearing many say “never again” after the Sandy Hook shooting, Raddatz added this to the report as a voice over: “These survivors are furious that no compromise has come and that more lives have been lost.” Furious?

Hardly. What was visible was a group of four students who felt the pain of the Texas children and parents, the frustration of helplessness, and the compassion for those who had suffered loss.

Their interview was about how they felt at Sandy Hook and how those in Texas must be feeling. The one student who did speak about possible legislation did so in a

calm and reserved manner, respectfully, and in a somber, heartfelt expression. “Our government and we as a nation, we know the solutions… We’ve known about these issues. We’ve known the ways we can stop them.

I think what we know just needs to come to fruition.”

As with any issue, there are multiple sides to a story, multiple sides to debate, and often a combination of various points of view that ultimately develop a solution.

But the time for those views, debates, and discussions are not while interviewing teens who had just encountered resurfacing feelings of their tragedy.

Nor should such a time- orchestrated by a journalist- be filled with slanted political positioning void of opposing views. This is, in its essence, editorializing during an interview with teens, and therefore embedding a clearly political agenda inside what should be an untainted first-hand account of the challenges and emotions

youth are dealing with at times of such tragedy.

The nation’s growing violence, gun assisted or otherwise, needs to be vigorously debated. Both from the gun control point of view and the mental health point of view– just not in this interview!

If you are wondering why the public’s confidence in the mainstream media is crashing, look no further than examples like this. Unfortunately, the level of journalistic integrity employed by the mainstream media today finds this type of reporting acceptable and even, God forbid, exceptional.

The fact is that it is unbalanced, slanted, agenda-laced, and, by all real journalistic standards, unprofessional. It is not the job of the media to direct the story, it is the job of a real journalist to report the facts– fair and balanced.

Leave opinions in the commentaries and leave the kids out of it!

THOUGHTS ON EDUCATION SENATOR FRANK RUFF

15TH SENATE DISTRICT As we see headlines of graduations at colleges and high schools, it is a great time to reflect on issues that surround our young people.

It is a wonderful opportunity to congratulate their success and wish them well in their future.

Looking Past to Stupidity in Some Schools The bad part of their education the last few years has been Covid. However, many parents were awakened to what is and is not happening in our schools.

Nothing is more powerful than parents looking out for their young people. It is important that there is public debate on the difference between indoctrination and education. Teaching the good and bad of history is important, but our children shouldn’t be blamed for the wrongs of other generations.

It is important that we do not allow in Virginia what has happened in such states as New York. There, they spent $200,000 of taxpayers’ money on having crossdressers enter the classroom. Nor in Richmond, where the school

superintendent believes the public should have to pay $20,000 to find out what the schools are presenting to students on the good and bad of being a ‘sex worker’.

Great News! #1 Sometimes, we in our region believe that there are better opportunities elsewhere. My message to our young people today is that you are responsible to make the difference in your success. There is no better example than a young man that grew up in our church. At a young age, all of us who interacted with him knew that he would have a bright future. No one was surprised when he was accepted at Harvard University. At Harvard, he joined a class of some of the brightest young people in the nation.

Four years later, after having a double major in both math and physics, he graduated with the highest grade point average in each major. Likely, others were as smart, but he bested them. He had the opportunity to do well and he did.

He worked hard and exceeded his fellow students in demanding majors.

Great News! #2 GReat Aspirations Scholarship Program, Inc. (GRASP) is now approaching twenty years of success working with students

starting in their junior year in high school. GRASP is a nonprofit organization that, from funding by businesses, places a financial advisor in high schools to work with students working through the maze of challenges of seeking assistance planning for college or skilled workforce training.

Currently, there are 90 high schools, many in our region, involved with GRASP. They work with students filling out financial paperwork and guide them in finding scholarships as well as offering the last dollars needed. Currently, they assist students in Dinwiddie, Brunswick, Nottoway, Lunenburg, Charlotte, Mecklenburg, and Halifax.

This is thanks to companies such as Universal Tobacco and Microsoft. It was great to see so many receive that assistance. Hopefully, all our high schools will join the current list.

Great News! #3 This year’s graduates are facing a fantastic situation on finding a job quickly.

Currently, there are twice as many job opportunities for every individual looking for a job. That means that some will have a great opportunity immediately, while others may have to take a lesser job until they establish themselves as being a good and reliable employee.

Beware I encourage those finishing high school now to think carefully about what your future should be. For example, some of those who have completed the Power Line Program at Southside Virginia Community College are currently earning four times more than some of their peers who chose college majors that have little demand in the job market.

A recent story published in the Richmond Times Dispatch profiled the success of college graduates in various majors. The story’s headline was ‘Some college degrees in Virginia never pay off; others provide instant return.’ The story looked at graduates by their major. After five years, the average income for some was near minimum wage.

Most of those majors were in the fine arts. While they may be rewarding in some ways, providing for your family’s well being should also be important. Those most successful had graduated in math, engineering, and computer science.

Graduates make sure your eyes are open as you plan your future. The easy path might not be the best option.

Ingredients Romesco:

TUNA ROMESCO SALAD BOARD

• 1 tablespoon extra-virgin olive oil, divided • 1 bunch scallions • kosher salt, divided • freshly ground black pepper, divided • 1 zucchini, sliced 1/2-inch thick on bias • 1 red bell pepper, sliced lengthwise into 1-inch pieces • 1/2 cup roasted salted almonds • 1/2 cup marinated artichokes, drained, patted dry and halved • 1 bunch radishes, halved • 1/2 cup green olives • 1/2 cup black olives • 4 ounces manchego cheese, sliced into triangles • 2 tablespoons flat leaf parsley, chopped

1. To make romesco: Preheat broiler. Cover sheet pan with parchment paper or foil. Place tomatoes on sheet pan and broil until well charred on both sides, 2-4 minutes per side. Transfer tomatoes to bowl; cool slightly then remove skin, core, seed and coarsely chop.

2. In blender, combine tomatoes; roasted red pepper; almonds; garlic; vinegar; paprika; red pepper flakes, if using; salt; and pepper until chunky paste forms. With blender on high speed, slowly drizzle in oil, scraping down sides of blender as needed until mixture creates rustic texture. Transfer romesco to bowl and taste for seasoning. Let romesco sit covered at room temperature 1 hour.

3. To prepare board: In bowl, drain tuna; set aside. Set grill on medium-high heat and brush grates with 1 teaspoon olive oil. Grill scallions until charred and tender, about 4 minutes per side. Remove to large plate and season with salt and pepper. Toss zucchini and red pepper in olive oil then season with salt and pepper. Grill until charred and tender, about 3 minutes per side. Remove to same plate to cool slightly.

4. To assemble: With large spoon, scoop generous amount of romesco into center of board. Using back of spoon, spread romesco into circle with well in center. Gently pile tuna into well. Arrange zucchini, pepper, roasted almonds, artichokes, radishes, olives and cheese around romesco and tuna. Sprinkle tuna with chopped parsley before serving.

Sydney Lavae Hampton

Helen Wilson Leonard, 89, of Dinwiddie County, Virginia, passed away on Tuesday, June 14, 2022.

Born in Alexandria, Virginia, on May 17, 1933, she was the daughter to the late Rennie Harrison and Gertrude Birdsall Wilson. Her husband Garnett Wade Leonard preceded her in death, as did her sister, Anne Stover, and her brother, Charles Wilson.

Helen was employed at United Virginia Bank as a bank teller. She was an avid gardener who loved to tend to her flowers, and she was also a lover of all animals.

She is survived by her loving sons, Michael Glenn Leonard and wife, Diane Fitzgerald Leonard of Glen Allen, VA, and David Wilson Leonard, Sr. and wife, Cindy Jean Leonard of Carson, VA; grandchildren, Nicole Leonard Stull, David Wilson Leonard, Jr., Emily Jean Marsh, Chad Western, and Kasie Sanders; great-grandchildren, Noah and Adah Stull, and Grayson Bryant Marsh.

A graveside service will be held on Tuesday, June 21, 2022, at 11:00 a.m. in the mausoleum of Southlawn Memorial Park, 1911 Birdsong Road S. Prince George, Virginia 23805. Sydney Lavae Hampton, 7, of South Chesterfield earned her angel wings on Wednesday, June 8, 2022 surrounded by her family. Born May 5, 2015, she was the daughter of Sidney Lavon Hampton, Jr. and Pamela Michelle Branch. She and her family are members of Community Christian Church.

Queen of being sassy, Sydney ran the house. Her personality was infectious, and she loved dancing and singing at the top of her lungs. Going out to eat was one of Sydney’s favorite things to do. Food was her happy place. For downtime, Sydney enjoyed watching YouTube. She loved going swimming and was most excited when she was able to go to the beach. Her most favorite activity was playing with and taking care of her baby brother, who she loved so much. Sydney wanted to be a doctor or veterinarian when she got older.

Sydney was preceded in death by her maternal great-grandfather, George Branch and wife, Frances; great-great grandmother, Shirley Lea; great-great-aunt, Johnsie Lee Jones; and aunt, Savannah Straughter.

Tremayne I. McKeever of Dinwiddie, VA was born February 21, 1966 to the youngest of ten siblings born to the late Annie E. Sellers McKeiver and Jerome McKeiver, Sr. He received his diploma at the Richmond Public Schools. Tremayne further his education and received a certificate in welding. He started his career at English Boiler & Tube, Inc in Richmond, were he was employed for several years. Tremayne was previously employed at Rusty’s Welding in Chester, VA. Tremayne was a diehard Dallas Cowboy fan.

He also enjoyed working on cars and spending time with family. He loved life and lived life to the fullest.

Along with his parents he was preceded in death by his brothers, Jerome McKeiver, Jr., Rodney McKeiver, Phillip McKeever, and Louis McKeever; sisters, Veronica McKeiver and Sylvia McKeiver and his nephew, Nieko McKeiver.

Mr. Carnell Kevin Lee Wooten went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, June 8, 2022 four days before his 32nd birthday with family and friends at his bedside.

Kevin was a very talented young man. He started playing music at the age of six. His first song played in public was the “Drummer Boy” at Marmora Baptist Church’s Christmas program. He loved to follow his mom, Donita Wooten and grandmother, Rev. Gracie Lee Scott to church and his uncle, Dallas. He would say, “I’m going to play like you mommy, grandma and his uncle, Dallas.”

He was a very gifted musician and could play any song he heard. He was the musician for many churches to include: Marmora Baptist Church, Springfield Baptist Mass Choir, High Power Church of God in Christ, Galilee Baptist Church, First Baptist Church-Jarrett, Mt. Calvary Baptist Church-Freeman, and New Hope Baptist Church. Kevin was also the drummer for Shiloh Gospel Chorus where he would play on the fourth Sunday along with his mother. Many thanks to Rev. Danny Tucker for taking Kevin under his wing and giving him an opportunity to play and grow at Oak Grove Baptist Church in Lawrenceville, VA. His music excelled after that time of mentoring. Kevin went wherever he was needed to bless people with his music and song. His signature song was “Walk Around Heaven All Day”.

Kevin was a 2009 graduate from Dinwiddie High School, where he ran track, sang in school choir known as “The Voices of Love” and a member of “Men About Progress Step Team” under the leadership of Mr. James Spence.

Kevin never meet a stranger, he loved everybody no matter the skin color. He would greet everyone with a smile and a hug.

Kevin was preceded in death by his father, Herbert l. Wooten; grandmothers, Rev. Gracie l.

Scott and Mary Alice Wooten; uncles, Raymond Dent, Willie Mack Wooten, Joshua Wooten, Joseph Wooten, and Elder Robert Wallace; aunts, Josephine Bland, Patricia Wallace, Mildred Wooten and Peggy Wooten and her sister, Jean Frazier.

Cashawn Parker, the entire New Hope Church Family and the Pitts Band, Marmora Scotts Ensemble, his devoted and special friend, Marcus Broadnax, and all the minister he had the pleasure of serving in the music ministry; many-many cousins and friends too many to name; the entire Class of 2009 Dinwiddie High School.

Mother Lillie F. Brown Parker

Mother Lillie Frances Brown Parker, age 93, of 1507 New York Avenue, Hopewell, Virginia entered into eternal rest early Saturday morning, June 11, 2022. She was born to the late George Washington and Frances Lillie Hicks Brown on May 29, 1929.

Mother Parker was preceded in death by her brothers, Levi Brown, Bernard Brown, Herman Brown, Herbert Brown, James Brown and George Brown; sisters, Beatrice Brown, Daisy Brown, Catherine Bullock and Edna Gilliam.

Mother Parker loved the Lord and was a devoted member of Prayer Room of Faith Apostolic under the leadership of Elder Rux D. Green. Mother Parker was an active, dedicated and loyal member of the church. She served as a Missionary, President of the Pastor’s Aid, and sang with the gospel singing group “50 plus”. She genuinely loved her pastor, Elder Green, her dear friend Mother Susie Green and the entire Green family. She had a special love for her church family. She loved serving the Lord and often fellowshipped with the saints at Fountain of Life Outreach Church, Hopewell, Mission Church and New Beginnings Church, Petersburg, VA. Mother Parker was educated in the Chesterfield County Public School System. After working several jobs, she spent a stance at David M. Lee furniture company, then spent 15 years as caretaker for Mr. Struminger, of Virginia Linen Services. After retirement, she decided to become a Foster Grandparent, a program that served the Woodlawn Learning Center for over 21 years. All the kids loved her and called her “Grandma”. Mother Parker had a sweet loving spirit and was loved by all who had the pleasure of meeting her. She never met a stranger.

Mother Parker loved to cook, sew, and watch her daytime stories. She had such a sense of humor and loved to joke, laugh and make other laugh. She was so funny! It is no wonder that she became a TikTok sensation landing over 2.5 million views as “Grandma Lillie”.

She also loved bringing people together. Every year on her birthday, she garnered the community together for what she called a “Neighborhood Cookout” which attracted those she knew and many that she did not!

Mother Parker was a devoted mother, sister, grandmother, aunt, and friend. She raised her five children to stand strong like she did. She loved them no matter what. Her children made sure she was given her flowers while she was alive and thanked God for their bouquet of flowers name Lillie. Her memory and love will forever be cherished by her loving children, Carolyn Levine, Barbara Hunter (Burt) of Hopewell, Carl Johnson, Jr. (Regina) of Hopewell, Michael Johnson of Chesterfield, Ben Johnson, Sr. (Ruth) Hopewell, and her baby brother, Franklin Brown (Carol) of Hopewell. Amongst those who will miss her dearly are her 110 grandchildren consisting of 20 grandchildren, 48 great grandchildren, 39 great-great grandchildren and 3 great-great-great grandchildren; a host of nephews, nieces and other relatives, a devoted cousin Doris Spratley, devoted friends Corey Jones, who she loved like a grandson and Mrs. Mae Craighead.

Within the realm of His infinite wisdom and beyond our minuscule labyrinth of understanding, God quietly and peacefully transitioned Erlene Teresa Epps from her actual earthly home to her heavenly abode in Glory on Thursday, June 9, 2022. Erlene was the youngest of five children born to the late Deacon Norman O. Epps and Deaconess Lillian M. Hartfield Epps of Prince George, Virginia.

She was educated in Prince George County Schools where she was an honor student and a thespian, performing in many plays. After graduation, Erlene was hired by the Prince George County Police Department with the distinction of being the first Black female Deputy Sheriff hired in Prince George County (as written up in the local newspaper) then became Special Agent with Virginia ABC Board.

Erlene later matriculated at Virginia State University where she received her Bachelor of Science in Industrial Studies. She used her passion for educating young people to teach math in Sussex County, Petersburg and Chesterfield County Schools. When she was not teaching, Erlene loved to play the piano and listen to Funk, Reggae, and Classic R&B music.

At an early age, Erlene joined the Morning Star Baptist Church where she sang in the Junior Choir, then the Senior Choir, and regularly attended Sunday School and Vacation Bible School. Erlene also assisted on the newspaper staff and during the church’s centennial celebration served on the Publicity and Souvenir Book committees.

In addition to her loving father, Erlene was preceded in death by her devoted sister, Catherine Chawlk.

A loving mother and devoted sister, Erlene leaves to mourn her loss an only child, Eric Timothy Epps; her mother, Lillian Epps; one brother, Norman O. Epps, Jr. (Paula); two sisters, Carol E. Fields (Sam), and Edith E. Mason; a brother-in-law, Elfago Chawlk; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and other family members.

March 15, 1932 - June 9, 2022 On Thursday, June 9, 2022, our hearts were saddened by the passing of our loved one, Mrs. Alvenia Thweatt Ford of 6417 Thweatt Drive, Disputanta, VA. She was born March 15, 1932, to the late Julia Thweatt Bowman and Roy Thweatt, Sr. She accepted Christ at an early age, and was a member of Union Branch Baptist Church, Prince George, VA where she served as an usher, member of the senior choir, pulpit aide and the Household of Ruth.

She was employed at Brown and Williamson Tobacco Company and retired from the Prince George County Public Schools Transportation Department where she served as a school bus aide.

She was preceded in death by her husband, William M Ford, Jr.; son, Freddie L. January 7, 1952 - June 9, 2022 Bobby R. Traynham, Sr., formerly of Halifax County, VA, and resided for the last 40 plus years in Petersburg, VA, suddenly passed away at Bon Secours Southside Regional Medical Center on June 9, 2022. Bobby was preceded in death by his parents, Elrex and Minnie Traynham; one sister, Lois Stovall and his twin brother, Benny Traynham (Barbara); sister-in-law, Jean Traynham; and his brothers-in-law, James Stovall and Russell Hamlet.

Bob attended Halifax County Public Schools and graduated from Halifax High School in 1971.

December 7, 1947 - June 12, 2022 Clyde Hagan Jessee, of Chester, Virginia, went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, June 12, 2022.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Isaac Clyde and Ida Lee Jessee.

Clyde is survived by his wife, Linda, of 49 years; son, Brian Clyde Jessee and his wife, Vickie; daughter, Brianne Jessee Blick and her husband, Donnie; son, Eric Christopher Jessee, Sr.; and sister, Judy Page. He had no greater joy than being “PopPop” to his grandchildren, Jordan, Jillian (husband, Jacob), Eric Jr., Kayla, James, Reagan and Laney. After graduating from Hopewell High School, he completed 3 years at Piedmont Bible College, studying for Christian ministry. He served 6 years in the Virginia Army National Guard. His early working career was in the grocery industry with Safeway Stores, The Village Market of Powhatan, and he retired as a truck driver for JB Mulch of Chester. Clyde actively followed Jesus, was a war movie buff, and loved spending time with his family. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, June 21, 2022 at J.T. Morriss & Son - Chester Chapel, with visitation at 1:00 PM and a funeral service beginning at 2:00 PM. Officiating pastor is Rev. Pat Fiordelise of Kingsland Baptist Church. Interment will follow the service at Centralia Cemetery.

Esther M. Smith

November 6, 1952 - June 9, 2022 On June 9, 2022, God called Esther’s name and she soared on eagle’s wings to her heavenly home to live with her Father for eternity. She was born in Portsmouth, VA, November 6, 1952. She was the daughter of Sudie Hooks Moore and George O. Allen.

Esther attended public schools in Portsmouth, Virginia, attended Richard Bland Community College, Petersburg, VA; John Tyler Community College, Chester, VA; and the Information Technology Certificate Program at Virginia Commonwealth University, Richmond, VA. She worked over 30 years for the Department of the Army, Communications Electronics Command, Software Engineer Center, Fort Lee, VA as an Information Technology Specialist developing and supporting the infrastructure that enabled communications within and outside of the organization. She also developed, tested and provided support for the Army’s supply systems worldwide.

In addition, during those years, Ms. Smith served as an advocate for employee rights often called upon to serve as the Equal Employment Opportunity (EEO) counselor helping employees and management resolve issues relating to employee rights.

She accepted Jesus Christ at an early age. She was a long-standing member of Union Grove Baptist Church, South Chesterfield, VA and later moved her membership to the Cornerstone Baptist Church, North Chesterfield, VA. Esther truly was a servant of God and her fellow man. At Union Grove Baptist Church, she taught Sunday School for years and often wrote plays based on scripture – something she enjoyed immensely. She enjoyed playing a character in her play as much as she enjoyed writing the play. She sang over 30 years in the church choirs. In addition, she enjoyed playing piano and dabbled with writing songs at home. Her greatest passion was cooking.

Her family and friends were blessed by this talent many times over. She could make a meal out of anything and often invited her friends over to delight in her creations. Even over the past 10 months, she would show and direct her niece, Kenya, on how to prepare certain foods she wanted—going so far as to prepare the dough to make chicken and dumplings. If you were her friend, your family became part of hers. If she knew you or a member of your family liked a particular dish, oftentimes she would prepare it for them out of love.

Another passion of hers was her love for her children and grandchildren and all of those she adopted as her children. She always spoke highly of her children and wanted the best for them. Her grandchildren were the apple of her eyes. There was no doubt as to how proud she was of them and all that they had accomplished. She always offered encouragement and helped them achieve their goals in any way she could.

Ms. Smith was a community activist. She was involved in the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) and other community activities. She was a Reading Buddy for many years at the Motoaca Elementary School, Motoaca, VA. Her family and friends recognized her as a woman of great strength and wisdom. She was a mentor and advocate for many. Her lessons of life and love will be forever embedded in the hearts of those she loved and those she encountered along life’s journey. That beautiful smile and twinkle in her eye when she greeted her family and friends will be missed.

She is survived by her children, Jamie Smith of Clarksville, TN and Jeremy Smith of South Chesterfield, VA; daughter-in-law, Caterina Smith of Midlothian, VA; and former husband and lifelong friend, James Smith of Petersburg, VA. April 29, 1961 - June 11, 2022 Trudi Gail Capron, 61, of Hopewell VA, passed away on June 11, 2022. She was the daughter of the late CWO3 (Ret) Walter C. Capron, Jr. and June Oliver Capron.

Trudi was able to travel the world with her military family and as a child participated in the Special Olympics in Frankfurt, Germany. She was a graduate of Hopewell High School and worked for a short time at Kenner Army Hospital, Fort Lee, in charge of linens. She was dearly loved by all her friends and family.

Trudi is survived by her sisters, Susan Meador (David) and Candace Irving; nephews, Kyle Meador, Ryan Meador (Rebecca), Trey Rainwater (Jessica) and Austin Irving (Tracy); and niece, Ciera Irving (Daniel); and numerous great-nieces and nephews. June 27, 1936 - June 12, 2022 Mary Frances Nunnally Lucy, 85, of North Dinwiddie, VA, passed away on Sunday, June 12, 2022. Born and raised in Dinwiddie County on June 27, 1936, she was the daughter of the late George Benjamin Nunally and Mary Frances Ball Nunnally. She married Charles Edward Lucy, Sr., of Dinwiddie, on October 31, 1952, and together they raised 5 children and spent 59 wonderful years together before he preceded her in death. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, who enjoyed all aspects of family life to include her annual Christmas Eve and Christmas Day get-togethers, annual Brunswick Stews & annual cookouts. She was a lover of the outside and spent many hours birdwatching, and especially enjoyed her yearly visits from the hummingbirds. Her favorite pastime was working on her word searches, fill-in books, and reading the latest Nicholas Sparks novel. She was a member of Matoaca Baptist Church and retired from Titmus Optical Company with 33 years of service. In addition to her parents and husband, she is preceded in death by three brothers; William Nunnally, George Nunnally, and Charles B. Nunnally; and one daughter-inlaw, Anna Williamson Lucy. Roger Lee Taylor

June 25, 1940 - June 12, 2022 Roger Lee Taylor, 81, of Chester, passed away on June 12, 2022. He was the son of the late Edmon and Carrie Taylor. He was also preceded in death by his sister, Lois Crone; brothers, Donald and Larry Taylor; and son, Ruediger Taylor.

Roger retired in 1977, after 20 years serving in the United States Army. He went on to own and run his own gas station business. He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Heidemarie E. Taylor; daughter, Donna Swagler (Brian); sister, Lola Harness; grandchildren, Kristal Joyner (Todd), Brittany Morgan, Steven Swagler (Yadira) and Kirsten Swagler-Harger (Padraig); and great-grandchildren, Makaela Hayes and Kadin Hayes.

July 28, 1928 - June 10, 2022 John Edward Soltez, 93, of Richmond, died on June 10, 2022.

He was a two-year Army veteran of the Korean War. He was employed by the finance department of Richmond until his retirement.

He is survived by a brother, Ben Soltez, of Richmond, and a nephew, Dr. Bruce Smith, of Albemarle, NC. A graveside service will be held at Merchants Hope Memorial Gardens in Prince George on Tuesday, June 14, 2022, at 1:00 pm. Harvey Clinton Spain, 82, of Prince George County, VA, passed away on June 11, 2022. He was born in Hopewell, but was raised and resided in Prince George County all of his life. He is the late son of Raymond Albert and Pearl F. Spain. He was a ‘57 graduate of Prince George High School and attended Smithdeal-Massey Business College. Harvey was employed for over 40 years at Hercules Inc. in Hopewell. In his early years, he was a member of Rosewood Presbyterian Church and later served at Oakland Baptist Church, and finally at The Heights Baptist Church in Colonial Heights. He spent some of his retirement years serving with the Colonial Heights Food Bank, Prince George Crime Solvers, Superkids program, and the Prince George Emergency Crew Executive Board.

He had a love of saltwater fishing and spent many retired days with his buddies fishing in the Outer Banks or out in the Chesapeake Bay. His true passion in life was the love he showed for his family, and we shall never forget his unwavering support and generosity.

There is no doubt that in his heart he truly loved and served our Lord and Savior.

He is preceded in death by his loving wife of 36 years, Evelyn Spain. He is survived by his brother, Kenny Spain (Freddie) of Prince George; uncle, Ralph Forloines of Prince George; son, Keith A. Spain (Ruby) of Prince George; daughter, Kimberly S. Garcia of Richmond, son, Michael E. Norma Jean Taylor, 87, of Moseley, VA, died June 9, 2022. Born and raised in Ivanhoe, VA, she was the daughter of the late Garnett and Oakley Porter. She was a loving wife of the late Joseph Winston Taylor. She is survived by her sisters, Tommy Sheffey (John), of Ivanhoe, VA, and Burleane Mumpower, of Hinton, WV; five daughters, Elizabeth Poe (Jim), Debra Taylor, Mary Kathryn Parker, Karen Richmond (Larry), and Nancy Williams (Rob); 11 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews. A funeral service will be conducted at 11:00 am on Thursday, June 16, 2022 at the Chester Chapel of J.T. Morriss & Son Funeral Home.

Willie Franklin Pinkleton, 89, of Dinwiddie, passed away on Thursday, June 9, 2022.

Born in Matoaca, VA, he was the son of the late Willie Royal “Pete” Pinkleton and Lily Kate Osborne. He was also preceded in death by his brother, Lawrence Pinkleton.

He is survived by his beloved wife of 67 years, Elizabeth Frances Williamson Pinkleton; children, Randy Pinkleton, Rick Pinkleton (Penny), and Susan Humphries (Wesley); grandchildren, Chris Pinkleton (Kirstin), Jaci Pinkleton, Luke Humphries (Haley), Alex Pinkleton, Jonathan Humphries, and Hannah Humphries; great-grandchildren, Elias Humphries and Benji Humphries; and daughter-in-law, Debbie Nichols.

Willie was a graduate of Petersburg High School. He proudly served his country in the Army National Guard and retired as 1st Lieutenant. Willie worked for American Tobacco as an engineer, retiring after many years. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, sports, and tending to his garden. He was a member of Rocky Run Hunt Club, the NRA, and the Dinwiddie Diamonds. Most of all, family was his greatest passion. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather.

Mr. Thomas Quick, affectionately known as “TQ”, departed this life Saturday, June 11, 2022 at his residence.

Thomas was born on May 8, 1935 in Gibson, NC to Genova Johnson and Joe Green. Thomas was the oldest of 13 children.

Thomas was a graduate of Gibson High School in Gibson, North Carolina. He moved to Petersburg in 1956 at the age of 21.

Thomas was well know around Petersburg, especially the Hinton Street area. He had several businesses including Q&Q Pool Hall. Tommy loved baseball and owned the Q & Q baseball team that played faithfully at Lee Park.

Tommy loved helping his community and he loved his family. He was also known for his sense of humor.

He was preceded in death by his parents; grandparents, Alberta and Paul Quick; brothers, Billy and Marion; sister, Clara and daughter, Shelia Williams.

Marica Jovan Morse was called home by God on Wednesday, June 8, 2022, with her family at her side at VCU Medical Center. Miss Morse was born in Hopewell, Virginia on July 2, 1981. Her relatives lovingly referred to her as “Ric Ric”. Marica was an honorary graduate of Hopewell High School’s class of 2000. She also frequented Mount Carmel Baptist Church of Hopewell, Virginia with her grandmother, Florence Boyd.

Miss Morse was predeceased in death by her grandfather, Mac Arthur Boyd, her Uncle Charles Jones and her sister Virgie Taylor Williams. Samantha Denise Thomas of Grovetown, GA peacefully entered into eternal rest on Tuesday, June 7, 2022, at Select Specialty Hospital in Augusta, Georgia. She was born on September 30, 1966, at Kenner Army Hospital in Fort Lee Virginia to the late Elijah Jones and the late Evelyn (Parham) Jones.

Samantha was a devoted wife, mother, sister, aunt, and friend who loved her family dearly. She was extremely proud of her son and all her nieces and nephews.

Samantha (Jones) Thomas was a 1984 graduate of Prince George High School, Prince George, VA. She attended National Business College in Roanoke, VA where she studied Computer Science. Samantha worked as a United States Department of the Army Civilian Administrative Specialist up until her health declined. She had a passion for shopping, talking on the phone with family and friends, and researching any and everything you needed help on. She had an adoring heart, and she was very humble. She had nicknames for all. Her nickname was Mel. She was preceded in death by her loving mother Evelyn (Parham) Jones and caring father Elijah Jones, her dear brother Torin Jones, beloved sister Velacita Jones, special sister-in- law Christina Andreasen Jones, brother-in-law, Darrell Thomas, sister-in-law, Debra Thomas, grandparents, great-grandparents, and numerous uncles, aunts, and cousins.

Smithfield Foods Scales Back Western US Operations STAFF REPORT LNNUSA.com

SMITHFIELD, VA- On Friday, June 10th, Smithfield Foods, Inc. announced that it will be reducing its operations in the western region of the United States, including closing a production facility in California.

According to the company, Smithfield expects to cease operations in Vernon, California by early 2023.

The company specifically cites the

“escalating cost of doing business in California” as the reason for this closure.

In addition to the shutdown of the California facility, Smithfield Foods will downsize its pig herd

in Utah and is considering options for eliminating its farms in both Arizona and California.

The company, based right here in Virginia, is offering employees at the impacted locations options for relocating to other facilities as well as transition assistance as these changes are implemented.

Doctors Sue FDA, Allege Crusade Against Ivermectin ‘Unlawfully Interfered’ With Their Ability to Treat Patients

Three physicians are suing the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for launching what they allege is a “crusade” against ivermectin as a treatment for COVID-19 that “unlawfully interfered” with the doctors’ ability to practice medicine.

In a lawsuit filed June 2, Drs. Robert L. Apter, Mary Talley Bowden and Paul E. Marik argued the FDA acted outside of its authority by directing the public, including health professionals and patients, to not use ivermectin — even though the drug is fully approved by the FDA for human use.

The suit, filed in the U.S. District Court, Southern District of Texas, Galveston Division, also names the U.S. Depart-

ment of Health and Human Services (HHS), HHS Secretary Xavier Becerra and Robert Califf, acting FDA commissioner.

According to the complaint: “The FDA generally cannot ban particular uses of human drugs once they are otherwise approved and admitted to the market, even if such use differs from the labeling — commonly referred to as ‘off-label’ use.

“The FDA also can not advise whether a patient should take an approved drug for a particular purpose. Those decisions fall within the scope of the doctor-patient relationship.

“Attempts by the FDA to influence or intervene in the doctor-patient relationship amount to interference with the practice of medicine, the regulation of which is — and

always has been — reserved to states.”

The plaintiffs said their lawsuit isn’t about whether ivermectin is an effective treatment for COVID-19. It’s about who determines the appropriate treatment for each unique patient and whether the FDA can interfere with that process.

In their complaint, they site an FDA publication, “Why You Should Not Use Ivermectin to Treat or Prevent COVID-19,” and tweets from the FDA — including one implying that ivermectin is intended only for animals — among examples of the FDA discouraging the use of ivermectin.

The plaintiffs also argued if the FDA is allowed to interfere with the practice of medicine now, using the pandemic as a cover, “this interference will metastasize to other

circumstances, destroying the carefully constructed statutory wall between federal and state regulatory powers, and between the FDA and the professional judgment of health professionals.”

“This lawsuit, brought by three eminently qualified physicians, is a welcome development,” said Mary Holland, Children’s Health Defense president and general counsel.

Holland told The Defender: “These doctors rightfully assert that the FDA, assisted by corporate media, have unlawfully interfered in the doctor-patient relationship and the appropriate treatment for individual patients. Regulating the doctor-patient relationship is an area of well-established state, not federal, law.

The Plaintiffs: Well-Respected in Their Field, High Success Rate Treating COVID Patients Apter, who is licensed to practice medicine in Arizona and Washington and has a COVID-19 patient survival rate of more than 99.98%, was referred to the Washington Medical Commission and Arizona Medical Board for disciplinary proceedings for prescribing ivermectin to treat COVID-19.

In a press release, Apter said, “If doctors are freed to treat patients according to their best judgment and unprejudiced evaluation of the medical literature, many thousands more deaths and serious disabilities will be averted.”

Apter said the FDA’s pronouncements against the use of ivermectin “have been the basis for disciplinary actions against doctors, interfere with the doctor-patient relationship, and have had a severe chilling effect on the use of life-saving medication for a deadly disease.”

In the lawsuit, Apter argued that government pressure, “largely through the FDA,” also led pharmacies — especially in large corporate chains — to refuse to fill ivermectin prescriptions for COVID-19, because that position is sup-

ported by the FDA. Bowden, who according to the lawsuit has 40 years of experience in emergency medicine, began recommending ivermectin to treat COVID-19 in early 2020. She treated more than 3,900 patients for COVID-19, with a success rate of over 99.97%.

She said the FDA’s actions regarding ivermectin, specifically its directives to stop using the drug to treat COVID-19, harmed Bowden’s ability to practice medicine and treat patients.

Bowden’s employer, Houston Methodist Hospital, last year forced her to resign by suspending her privileges for spreading “COVID misinformation.”

Bowden said she is “fighting back — the public needs to understand what the FDA has done is illegal, and I hope this suit will prevent them from continuing to interfere in the doctor-patient relationship.”

In an interview earlier this year with The Defender, Bowden said she was all for the COVID vaccines when they first came out — it was only when she started seeing what was happening with all the breakthrough cases that she wondered, “Why am I seeing so many COVID cases among the fully vaccinated?”

Then her patients began having adverse reactions. “If I hadn’t seen that firsthand, I would still think the vaccine was the way to go,” she said.

As the pandemic evolved, Bowden developed protocols

for preventing and treating COVID patients. She said she’s seen excellent results.

“The basis of it is ivermectin,” she said. “And also vitamins C and D, quercetin and zinc, and black seed oil. It’s nothing complicated — and it’s just like with anything in medicine — not one size fits all — protocols are guidelines.”

The controversy over prescribing ivermectin was initially “intimidating and isolating,” she said. “I thought I was a little bitty island in a huge ocean, and now I realize that I’m part of at least half a continent.”

Marik, author of more than 750 publications, was professor of medicine and chief of pulmonary and critical care medicine at Eastern Virginia Medical School (EVMS) in Norfolk, Virginia, from 2009 through 2021. He also served as a director of the intensive care unit at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital.

He developed a protocol for EVMS for treating COVID-19, called the EVMS COVID-19 Management Protocol, which included the MATH+ Protocol.

However, according to the lawsuit, Marik was forced to resign from his positions at EVMS and Sentara Norfolk General Hospital for promoting the use of ivermectin — “as well as other safe, cheap, and effective off-label FDA-approved drugs” — to treat COVID-19 following the FDA’s attempts to stop use of those drugs for that purpose.

Boyden, Gray & Associates, a Washington, DC-based law firm, is representing the plaintiffs.

Ivermectin was developed in the 1970s as a veterinary medicine to treat parasitic diseases in livestock, but a decade or so later was hailed as a “wonder drug” and received approval for human use as a therapeutic against diseases such as river blindness — or onchocerciasis — and lymphatic filariasis, according to Newsmax.

Since 1987, it has been used safely in 3.7 billion doses worldwide. William Campbell and Satoshi Omura won the 2015 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for their research on the drug.
