Power Outage Affects Downtown Businesses HOPEWELL

HOPEWELL— In downtown Hopewell, Friday morning, June 3rd started off like any regular morning- that is, until the 7am explosion at the intersection of Hopewell Street and E. City Point Road.

American Legion Post 146 Bartender Christina Levy was preparing to open for breakfast that morning when she heard the loud explosion. “The lights surged bright, and then the whole place went dark,” explained Levy. Then her thoughts switched to concern for the veterans who were waiting for coffee outside on the patio situated less than a hundred yards from the explosion site.

She explained that a large Hill Crest tanker truck had cut the sharp turn from E. City Point to Hopewell Street- between Roja Taco Joint and the American Legion post- too closely, running over the stop sign and striking the electric pole.

The utility pole splintered and crashed to the ground in an explosion of green and gold sparks and smoke.

“Our hearts stopped for a second,” said the CPR-certified Levy, adding that she headed outside to check

on the veterans waiting for breakfast to begin, in case anyone might need assistance. “Everyone was fine,” said Levy. “They were out there taking pictures.”

“We saw the driver of the truck run out of the truck and into the woods across the street [from Roja Taco Joint],” explained Levy.

“Then, he finally came back a little while later talking on his cell phone.”

POWER OUTAGE FROM PAGE 2 was out to much of downtown Hopewell for around twelve hours on Friday, leaving business owners in the dark.

Legion Facility Manager Chris “Lucky” Hacker said that because the establishment’s freezers had been upgraded from standard units to professional threedoor freezers that run from -10 to -15 degrees Fahrenheit, the loss of inventory for their restaurant operations was minimal.

“The inventory we lost was literally pocket change, about $20-$30 dollars

worth,” said Hacker.

In contrast, Chris Neal, owner of Randolph Market, located a few blocks away at the intersection of W. Broadway and N. 6th Avenue, said that the outage affected his grocery store, causing the loss of about $5,000 in groceries, including dairy products and some cut meats. Fortunately for Randolph Market, he had previously had some open cooler-area curtains installed, making a significant difference in keeping the cool air contained. Neal stated that items like crab legs and other seafood were moved to freezers as well.

Although the power was eventually restored around 7:30pm, Randolph Market was not able to reopen until the next day.

According to Donna Benton of Roja Taco Joint and Waves Sandwich Shop, both in the affected outage area, the two establishments lost the majority of their perishable inventory and were not able to reopen until the following Tuesday.

John Randolph Medical Center was without power as well on Friday, always a struggle for hospitals, their staff, and patients.

From Food Desert to Blue Zone

Local Doctor Strives to Transform Residents’ Health HOPEWELL

HOPEWELL- In five unique territories across the globe, people are living to celebrate their 100th birthday. These areas are called Blue Zones.

“The people there are not trying to live to 100, they just do. It just happens because of how they live and where they live,” said Dr. Clifford Morris, M.D., a cardiologist and practitioner of lifestyle medicine located in Chesterfield, Virginia.

People living in these Blue Zones live so long because of nine lifestyle habits practiced in all five areas. Some values include eating a plant-based diet, practicing natural movement daily, and valuing family relationships.

A Blue Zone exists right here in the U.S.––Loma Linda, California. And now, Morris is working to transform Hopewell into a Blue Zone.

In a recent report released by the University of Wisconsin-Madison, Petersburg was ranked as the least healthy city in Virginia, with Hopewell only two spots above. According to the UWM Population Health Institute’s website, these rankings were based on several different health factors,

including access to healthy foods.

Hopewell and Petersburg are considered food deserts.

This means that it is difficult for residents to easily access fresh produce and meat consistently and at an affordable price. Petersburg only has two grocery stores, according to the City Manager’s office; Hopewell only

has five.

“Food is the main weapon that we can use to empower groups of people, especially low-income people,” said Morris.

Places like food banks are actively working to help increase accessibility to food in low-income areas of the city. Dick Commander has been running the Hopewell

Food Pantry since the early 2000s.

“We always ask ourselves, ‘How can we help our clients?’” Commander said as he watched his team load paper bags of dry goods, fresh vegetables and personal hygiene products for the line of cars that hummed CONTINUED ON PAGE 5

The Hopewell Food Pantry uses a drive-thru-like method to greet clients, gather their information to be logged into the monthly spreadsheet and deliver groceries into a person’s vehicle– or wagon if they are walking. Community clients are allowed to receive food from the pantry once a month. The amount of food a client receives is based on the size of their family; the bigger the family, the more food they receive Commander stated simply.

However, the food given out typically only lasts a family one week. It is designed to supplement additional groceries, not sustain a family for an entire month.

The Hopewell pantry sees between 20 and 40 clients every day and operates on a budget of about $150,000 a year. Eighty-thousand of that budget is used to buy food, while the remainder is used to pay a small staff.

Commander says community members randomly donate food items, but he sees most of his donations around the holidays. His staff buys from certain grocery stores for discounted prices and receives food from other grocery stores that either may not be selling or is close to going out of date.

Although the food pantry does supply many Hopewell residents with food, the building is only open on

Fridays between 1pm and 3pm. Similarly, the Prince George Foodbank is only open two days out of the week—Tuesdays and Fridays from 10am to 12pm; the Petersburg H.O.P.E. Center food pantry is open 10am to 1pm. The H.O.P.E. Center also provides additional services throughout the week such as daily lunches at noon and utility assistance on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10am to 1pm. These programs allow the H.O.P.E. Center to provide over 10,000 people with groceries and 20,000 people with meals annually.

Farmers markets are another way to increase food access to areas considered food deserts like Hopewell and Petersburg. Currently, the Hopewell Farmers Market takes place every Sunday from 1pm to 3pm through September. The Petersburg Farmers Market runs yearround from 9am to 12pm on Saturdays. This market provides plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables for the Petersburg population, and for surrounding localities.

Like Petersburg, the Colonial Heights Farmers Market takes place year-round.

“In any Blue Zone area you find that the market is the center hub for change,” said Morris. It is the place where most of the vegetables are, a place for communion, a place for getting outdoors, and regular physical activity.” These are all aspects of living a Blue Zone lifestyle.

To make things even more

accessible, Morris promotes mobile markets like Greg Riggs’ Sprout About Mobile Market that goes into food deserts in order to increase access to fresh fruits, vegetables and meats.

“The principles of the Blue Zones is to make getting healthy easier for everyone,” Morris said. Communities need “to be consistent and to be steady by placing a community garden or taking a farmer into one of the food deserts.” He believes that a small change in someone’s environment— a small garden or a weekly mobile produce stand—can drastically change a person’s health outcomes.

“We underestimate how powerful our environment is,” he said. Which is why Morris and his work group One Hopewell have secured

funding and a partnership with the Blue Zones Project to transform Hopewell’s environment in the next five to six years by reimagining Hopewell’s policies, places and people.

“It’s very hard to change people, so sometimes it is easier to change the environment.”

Morris and One Hopewell have their second meeting with the Blue Zones Project on June 9th at 6pm.

They are excited to begin implementing their work plan and to begin gathering volunteers to help with this project.

“There’s not a lot of hope that something like this can catch on. But things like this do not happen unless there are skeptics,” Morris said with a laugh. “If we don’t do this now, then when?”

Petersburg Real Property Tax Rate to Drop PETERSBURG

PETERSBURG- Some Petersburg residents may see a drop in their real property taxes in the coming year.

City council members voted in late May to lower the FY2023 tax rate from $1.35 to $1.27 per one hundred dollars of value.

According to the city, this is the first reduction in the real property tax rate since 2006. In a press release, Mayor Sam Parham cited conservative spending, the recent A+ bond rating, and increased property values as the contributing factors to the lowered rate.

Petersburg’s total assessed value of real property exceeded last year’s total by 13%, triggering a reduction in the tax rate per Virginia State Code. The State Code

requires that a locality lower its tax rate if an annual assessment increases by over one percent. Localities are not permitted to exceed 101% of the previous year’s real property levies, but may opt to hold a public hearing in order to implement a higher rate than state code mandates. Petersburg’s council chose to lower the rate in accordance with Vir-

ginia Code.

The lowered tax rate is good news for many Petersburg residents who are feeling the pinch of higher fuel, food, and everyday living costs in an inflated economy. But with property value assessments going up, the decrease of eight cents per $100 of value may only take some of the sting out of paying property taxes this

year. Some residents could still see higher tax bills than in years past because of property valuations, which grew significantly throughout the COVID-19 pandemic because of housing demands and shortages that put upward pressure on home values and home sale prices.

PG’s 2023 Budget: A Look Inside PRINCE GEORGE

PRINCE GEORGE – The Board of Supervisors unanimously passed the Fiscal Year 2022-2023 budget totalling $68,951,487- 10.16 percent higher than the adopted 2022 general fund budget. It was approved before the state passed its own budget which provides certain fiscal numbers for localities, but county leaders were confident they would only have to make minor adjustments when the General Assembly adopted its own fiscal plan. Now that there is an agreed upon state budget, any necessary changes will soon come before the Board of Supervisors.

Under the approved county budget, proposed tax rates were adopted with a personal property tax rate reduced from $4.25 per $100 to $3.90 per $100, and the license (county decal sticker) fee has been eliminated on all property. The due date for tax payments has been changed to June 24, 2022, and there is a waiver of penalty fees and interest of zero percent for all payments received on or before August 31, 2022.

Vice Chairman Donald Hunter (District 2) said the tax rate will not be impacted by any state figures. “The Board sets the property tax, and that will not change,” he said. “We were confident that if any changes are necessary they will be minor and

decided we needed to move forward so the citizens knew what to expect.” Tax bills have been mailed out.

While the lower rates won’t negate the increase in assessed values, Hunter said, “This is the county’s response to try to counter, somewhat the assessments real estate and personal property values . We tried to counter, to some degree, with lowering the personal property tax and dropped real estate. If we went further than that, we would have to reinstate the tax rate and possibly even increase it further in the following years.”

The decision on the budget, which Supervisor Alan Carmichael (District 1) motioned to approve, came after many work sessions, discussions, public comments, and a thoughtful process between key staff and elected officials.

The budget serves as a financial road map for what programs and services are offered by the county, and ultimate approval is seen as one of the most important actions that the Board of Supervisors takes in the course of the year.

Within the plan, there is an increase in water and sewer fees to address inflationary increases in the utilities fund budget, a self-supporting enterprise fund. That includes $6.2 million in fund reserves to complete several major capital projects.

There is a “step” increase in salary for some employees

while others will receive a one-time bonus.

This includes a 5 percent scale adjustment for all county pay scales to make sure the county stays competitive in compensation in light of state-mandated minimum wage increases and increases provided by neighbors and government peers. In FY2023, non-public safety employees will be placed on steps according to relevant years of service to address pay compression in keeping with similar actions taken for public safety employees in FY2022, County Administrator Jeffrey Stoke said. Public safety employees will progress one step in FY2023, and state-mandated increases will be provided to constitutional officers and their funded employees, along with state-supported positions in the Department of Social Services and Riverside Criminal Justice Agency. These mandated compensation increases cost $1,361,105.

Four new positions will be added to county staff for FY2023 and include: 1 Police Officer, 1 Information Technology Technician, 1 Social Services Benefits Program Specialist III (fulltime), 1 part-time Social Services Benefits Program Specialist III (0.5), and converting 1 part-time Victim Witness Program Specialist to a full-time Victim Witness Advocate, elimination of one vacant Pre-Trial Officer position at Riverside Criminal Justice Agency, and 1 part-

time Utility Worker III (0.5).

Three position reclassifications and one career development increase to a Deputy Commissioner of Revenue are also proposed. One Assistant Commonwealth’s Attorney will become a Deputy Commonwealth’s Attorney; one ECC Manager V will become a Manager VI; and the Victim Witness Coordinator III will become a Coordinator IV. The County will see increases in the retirement contributions paid to the Virginia Retirement System for all full-time employees.

Health insurance proposals received by the Board on March 29th show that no increase is required for employee health insurance, and budgeted health insurance expenditures were lowered at the March 29th budget work session.

A building maintenance repair budget of $258,000 is funded to address needed facility repairs throughout the county. A General Fund transfer to the capital fund of $887,091 is budgeted for the purchase of public safety and county vehicles ($450,000) and school buses ($437,091).

Reverse Raffle Raises Funds for Students COLONIAL HEIGHTS

COLONIAL HEIGHTS- On May 26th, individuals had 350 chances to walk away with $5,000. The annual Southern Virginia Regional Chamber of Commerce Reverse Raffle, held at the Moose Lodge in Colonial Heights, offered an evening of food, fun, and a chance at the grand prize.

“Reverse Raffle is where we sell 350 tickets, and as we draw the balls that we have on the table out of the barrel, they are eliminated.

The last ball in the barrel is the one who wins the grand

prize,” explained SOVA Chamber Executive Director John Brandt.

The event drew both an online and in-person crowd.

Proceeds serve as a fundraiser for the chamber with the bulk of the monies to benefit the organization’s scholarship programs. The Chamber expects to award $6,000 in scholarships this year.

The final two left in the hunt for the grand prize, Jasmine Lynch and Elaine Grenier, decided to split the pot and both took home $2,500.

Delayed Downtown Thunder Returns for 2022 Season PRINCE GEORGE STAFF REPORT LNNUSA.com

PRINCE GEORGE- The Thunder returned to the river this past weekend- luckily, without rain. Downtown Thunder was supposed to kick off its 2022 season on Saturday, May 14th, but the weather didn’t cooperate on the day of the event, forcing the nonprofit to postpone its debut.

“We’ve got four more [Downtown Thunder events] after this one- everything’s dependent on the weather. This is actually a rain date event that we had to organize,” said event organizer Dino Lunsford.

“Our next event is going to be June 24th behind the Beacon Theatre in Hopewell.”

The season finally kicked off at 4pm on Saturday, June 4th at Jordan Point Marina, drawing in crowds of motorcycle and hot rod drivers and fans. On stage, newcomer Cheapshot opened for the long-awaited reunion of 11:1, explained Lunsford. “We’ve got a

throw-back band known as 11:1. It’s the first time they’ve played in almost twenty years, and they had a huge following back in the day. We’re super excited for those guys to get together and play again.”

Each Downtown Thunder event raises money for a cause, and Saturday’s event was no exception.

“We’ve got a young man

that was in a tragic, horrifying motorcycle accident. His name is Hunter Bishop, and him and his wife have flown up here from Florida to be a part of this event, and he’s going to be the recipient of a check from Downtown Thunder. So all of the proceeds are going to be routed that way.”

The remainder of the 2022 Downtown Thunder

season includes the June 24th event in downtown Hopewell before returning to Jordan Point on July 16th and August 13th. On September 17th, the organization will host its annual event in memory of Roy Cox at Scott Park in Prince George County.

New Bar and Grill Opens with Plans to Expand Offerings, Hours HOPEWELL

HOPEWELL – The owners of Farucci’s Bar & Grill are determined to succeed and grow as they develop their business, which first opened in April.

Owners Jim Farooque and his wife Tiffany Johnson opened the bar, located at 230 S. 15th Avenue in Hopewell, to “serve the community within the Tri-Cities area where they live”.

The family’s theme for the bar and grill is “good times and good vibes”, which the couple hopes to infuse in every aspect of operation, from happy hours to DJ performances.

Farooque says they had plans to be open from 11 am to midnight, but with challenges in staffing, as all or at least most businesses are facing, the two decided to adjust their original hours, explaining that they are open Tuesdays through Sundays beginning at 3pm. But that’s just the start of what Jim Farooque plans for the future.

Saturday and Sunday brunch kicks off in mid-June, and he says they will also extend weekly hours back to an 11am opening, eventually adding breakfast.

“We believe in this community and how it’s like one large family that supports one another including

others’ businesses,” he said.

“We don’t look at the other bars and grills as competition but want everyone to succeed, which helps everyone in the hospitality industry. We hope to get that same support.”

They will if it’s up to patrons like Caitlin Rogers, who said, “I went to eat at Farucci’s here in Hopewell, it is a new restaurant and it is amazing. It looks like it’s just a bar, but it’s a restaurant from the day to evening, and I highly recommend it.

Thought I would put the word out since it’s so new.”

Having started other hospitality businesses all with different themes, Farooque says he has the experience to run the bar and grill and wants to focus on a 30-plus crowd during entertainment events including DJ performances. A dress code will be enforced with rules such as no white tees or tank tops, no slides or crocs, no headwear, and no sagging. He also plans to implement a “no reentry” rule on entertainment nights, and the bar manager says he will have a police officer on duty to ensure safety while making all customers feel comfortable. He doesn’t want to let the community or possible patrons down.

Farucci’s menu features quality dishes, specials like turkey legs and baked spaghetti, and a late night menu. The bar has a soul

food flair including collard greens, mac and cheese, and oxtail platters served with two sides and cornbread. It also features American-style menu items like mozzarella sticks, chicken wings, and hamburgers. They also feature signature cocktails.

While he’s making sure all employees are making at least $15 an hour, he admits it’s challenging to find cooks that can work the hours the owners want to provide.

“We want to give back to the community of which we are a part of,” Faroogue said.

“We wanted to bring quality food to Hopewell providing a menu that can’t get ev-

erywhere else. This was our answer for what we could bring to help provide business to the community while serving the area.”

While the couple first considered a downtown location, they found the building on 15th Street for rent and went for it.

“It might not be downtown, but we believe we will have our own niche,” the business owner said. “Anchor Room is on the same street and has been successful for years with a great following,” he noted. “I think we can develop a following.”

And build on its theme of good times and good vibes.

PETERSBURG- On Thursday, June 9th, the City of Petersburg announced the hire of a new Director of Public Works & Utilities.

Paul Johnson is a resident of Petersburg and brings twenty years of engineering and construction experience to the city.

“Mr. Johnson competed against a pool of extremely qualified candidates,” said Interim City Manager Kenneth Miller. “I am confident that he will proactively lead Petersburg Public Works & Utilities as the City be-

gins major upgrades and improvements to water, wastewater, storm drainage, and transportation projects that will provide better and expanded services for citizens and business/industry growth.”

Johnson comes to Petersburg from Henrico County’s Department of Public Works where he served as Director of Road Construction and Maintenance Division among other roles. He has experience in both the public and private sectors working with stormwater and drainage systems, structure and road design, site plans, and storm preparation and recovery.

Johnson’s education includes a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering earned from Pensacola Christian College and Master’s work in Civil Engineering from Florida Atlantic University.

He is currently working on a Master of Science in Executive Leadership at Liberty University. Johnson will step into the role of Director of Public Works & Utilities on June 21, 2022, with a salary $125,000 per year.

“I look forward to leading a department that is vital to serving Petersburg citizens,” said Johnson. “Improving and growing the infrastruc-

ture in Petersburg is essential for economic growth and prosperity. My family and I live in Petersburg, so I am pleased to have the opportunity to serve my community.”

Hopewell School Receives Green Grant HOPEWELL

HOPEWELL— On the last Earth Day, April 22nd, teacher Ryan Ponder of DuPont Elementary School spearheaded a tree-planting and landscape beautification effort with many volunteers, including many from industrial plants operating in the city. He and his team of dozens worked on a hot, sunny day to plant new trees and conduct upkeep on school grounds.

The school continues to excel in this area, having recently been awarded one of thirty Green Grants given throughout the state from Keep Virginia Beautiful- a part of the Keep America Beautiful organization. DuPont Elementary received the grant for “Restoring the Heart of Hopewell”.

This is the 12th year that Green Grants have been awarded throughout the state to help students engage in litter cleanup and other related activities.

“Green Grants provide financial resources needed to implement innovative and effective projects that will result in more clean, green, and beautiful places to live, work, and play. Volunteers conducted landscaping work as part of an Earth Day 2022 beautification project at DuPont Elementary.

Virginia Beautiful will be utilized to purchase materials and supplies for students to organize and participate in litter cleanups and other environmental initiatives.

Situated in the heart of a centrally-located Hopewell neighborhood, DuPont Elementary is a Title One school that serves 600 students. The school is

committed to help forge the next generation of environmental leaders by engaging young students and providing opportunities to improve their community.

The school has a dedicated “litter critter crew” and “green recycling team”, and activities are scheduled as part of ongoing enrichment classes.

The mission at Keep Vir-

ginia Beautiful is to engage and unite Virginians to improve the natural and scenic environment. Since 2011, the Green Grants program has provided $254,500 for 355 programs and projects throughout the state.

Virginians Encouraged to Prepare Now for the 2022 Hurricane Season

Hurricane Season Began June 1st

RICHMOND,VA — Governor Glenn Youngkin is urging Virginians to prepare now for this year’s hurricane season, which began on Wednesday, June 1st, and lasts through November 30. Forecasters at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) are predicting another above-average hurricane season this year with a likely range of 14 to 21 named storms (winds of 39 mph or higher), of which 6 to 10 could become hurricanes (winds of 74 mph or higher), including 3 to 6 major hurricanes (category 3, 4 or 5; with winds of 111 mph or higher). NOAA provided these ranges with a 70% confidence.

“I want to encourage Virginians to take the time and prepare now for this coming storm season,” said Governor Glenn Youngkin.

“This includes not only our coastal residents but inland Virginians as well. History has proven that our inland communities are just as susceptible to hurricane impacts like flooding, tornadoes, and high winds.”

For comprehensive information on preparedness, response, and recovery activities, please review

the Virginia Hurricane Evacuation Guide, which not only includes evacuation information, but also highlights actions to take in the event of tropical weather.

“Virginia should be proud of the work being done by our public safety agencies to ensure a swift and effective response to all hazards, including hurricanes,” said Secretary of Public Safety and Homeland Security Robert Mosier. “We can’t forget that the best form of preparedness is ensuring

Recent years have proven that hurricanes are also not just a coastal threat. Even storms that start in the lower Atlantic or Gulf States have the potential to come north and cause significant damage. This is why we encourage all Virginians across the Commonwealth to take the time to become prepared.

“Preparedness is all about being

ready before a storm or disaster even develops,” said Shawn Talmadge, State Coordinator at the Virginia Department of Emergency Management. “Many of the items we ask Virginians to keep in a kit or plans that should be made are not only applicable to hurricanes but for many other types of hazards as well. Just a little bit of planning goes a long way in ensuring the safety and welfare of you and your family.”

Take the time now to review your insurance policy, secure your property, and create a plan that includes arrangements for your pets or those that may need extra assistance. Below are a few critical steps to ensure you and your family’s safety.

Know your zone.

Evacuation may become necessary depending on the track and severity of the storm. Review Virginia’s evacuation zones at KnowYourZoneVA.org. Users can enter their physical address in the search bar of the website to view and confirm their designated evacuation zone.

Small businesses in Virginia may soon find it much easier to offer health insurance to their employees. A new law recently signed by Governor Glenn Youngkin allows small businesses to ban togeth-

er into benefits consortiums to secure employee health insurance as a group. Larger employee numbers will allow those businesses to negotiate better, more affordable insurance rates. Small businesses are at a disadvantage compared to large companies when it comes

to securing health insurance for their work force. Larger numbers of employees enable bigger companies to reach lower health insurance costs for individual employees. With this new ability to negotiate as a group, small businesses owners will now be

able to negotiate more closely on par with those larger businesses.

Lawmakers intend for the legislation to assist small businesses in hiring and retaining talented employees as well as a way to provide more health insurance coverage to Virginians.

Cavs Advance to Final Four PETERSBURG

PETERSBURG- It’s that time of the year – win or go home. And for the Petersburg Cavaliers, it was time to win. On Sunday, June 5th, the Cavs faced the Rowan County Bulls in the playoffs, a team fresh off of a roundone 132-point playoff victory the night before.

The Bulls took the lead early in the first, but the Cavs built an eleven-point lead off high pressure defense creating offensive opportunities.

But as quickly as the Cavs built the lead, the Bulls took it away. Two back-to-back threes and a breakaway that

followed, and the Bulls had it knotted up again. As the buzzer sounded on quarter one, a half court prayer found its way to the bucket to give the Bulls a 30-27 lead. The Bulls exploded as the second quarter began with a 10-2 run. But back-toback threes by Elijah Moore and Walter Williams midway through the quarter rallied the Cavs who went into the half down 62-59.

Midway through the third period, the Cavs began to separate from the Bulls. Petersburg was able to orchestrate a 5-0 and 8-0 run to overcome two Bulls’ scoring streak to finish the third quarter with the lead, 90-87.

Limited play by Moore due to a hampering injury saw several other Cavs step up and fill the gaps to secure the victory. The Cavs dominated the fourth, outscoring the Bulls 34 to 19 to finish the game 124-106.

Avery Patterson, who was shooting the lights out in the first half, scoring 17 points, added another 11 points in the second half.

Donald Rutherford added another 22 points as the two led the Bulls’ scoring. Walter Williams led all scorers with 34 points and adding 11 rebounds. Tavon Mealy added another powerful performance in the paint, finishing with 29 points and

14 rebounds.

The Cavs travel to South Carolina to face the Hickory Hoyas in the semi-finals on Saturday, June 11th. The Hoyas, the only team to defeat the Cavs this year, won their second-round playoff match against the Fayetteville Panthers 126 to 109.

That earlier victory over the Cavs included the absence of Petersburg’s star Elijah Moore, who sat out the game due to league penalties for excessive technical fouls in the previous game.

A win on June 11th brings the Cavs- and the championship game- back to Petersburg on Saturday, June 18th.

COLONIAL HEIGHTSThe Chili Peppers’ blazed through their first games of the 2022 season on an undefeated streak, a streak that was extinguished on Saturday night, June 4th, when the team faced the Wilson Tobs (5-2). The away game in North Carolina ended in a 2-7 loss for the Chili Peppers as they struggled through unchar-

acteristically sluggish play.

While the game was their first loss of the season, it was not their only loss of the weekend.

On Sunday, June 5th, the Peppers met the rival Peninsula Pilots on the field at Shepherd Stadium, but the home field advantage was not enough to carry them to a win. The 3-4 Pilots hover near the bottom of the East Division, while the Peppers sit at the top with six wins and two losses. Despite the

Chili Peppers pocketing two wins against the Pilots already this season, the Pilots shut out the Peppers 8-0 Sunday night.

But the weekend was not a total loss for the Chili Peppers- or should we say, the Chilly Peppers. The team debuted their cooler alter ego at Shepherd Stadium Saturday night, taking the field in ice blue uniforms against the Native American National Team. Despite a slow start to the night, the

Chilly Peppers were able to catch the NANT and surpass them in the final inning, winning by just one point 14-13.

On Wednesday, June 8th, the Peppers soundly defeated the Martinsville Mustangs to remain at the top of the East Division. They play three games in a row this weekend, Friday night June 10th, Saturday night June 11th, and Sunday night, June 12th.

Attempted Larceny at the Publix: 1979 | June 06, 2022

This week, the Chesterfield County/Colonial Heights Crime Solvers program needs your help to solve an attempted larceny.

On May 26, 2022, around 9:58 a.m., three males entered the Publix at 3007 Boulevard in Colonial Heights. One of the suspects attempted to steal a wallet from a customer’s purse while the other two males distracted her during the incident.

When the customer started screaming, the suspects fled the scene and left the Publix parking lot in an unknown silver, fourdoor sedan. The suspects are described as Hispanic males, about 20-30 years old and approximately 5 feet 3 inches to 5 feet 6 inches tall.

TAX RELIEF COMING EVENTUALLY! SENATOR FRANK RUFF

15TH SENATE DISTRICT Last Wednesday, a budget agreement was reached between House and Senate negotiators. We have been waiting since mid-March for an agreement to be reached. Many have asked: “What took so long?” There is no clear answer, however, there is always negotiation on the budget and compromise. Knowing this, it

should not have taken eleven weeks. Clearly, Senate Democrats had no sense of urgency.

By keeping the General Assembly in a special session for nearly three months, Governor Youngkin has only days to offer his amendments to the budget agreement. Had the budget been on time – or even two weeks ago – the Governor would have had 30 days to review the budget and offer amendments. Now, he only gets seven days after the budget is delivered to him.

As with every budget,

there are those items that I agree with and those that I oppose. Every budget agreement is a compromise and this one is no different.

However, on the final version of the budget, you can only vote for or against it.

Tax Cuts There is actual tax relief in this proposal. While Senate Democrats would not agree to double the standard deduction on the state income tax, which Senate Republicans have been promoting since the 2019 session, they did increase it by 78%. In real numbers,

the standard deduction will now be $8,000 for individuals and $16,000 for married couples. This is closer to what the federal government does. This will give every Virginian an extra $3,500 in annual earnings that will be free from state income taxes.

The grocery tax will be going down too, though not as much or as soon as Governor Youngkin and Republican legislators proposed.

Beginning next year, the grocery tax will be cut 60%, going down to 1%.

fifty-five and over will be receiving an income tax subtraction of $10,000 for the current year and $20,000 for tax year 2023.

Virginians will also be receiving a one-time tax rebate of $250 for individuals and $500 for married couples later this year.

Over the course of the biennium, this represents total tax cuts of $3.7 billion.

The most glaring omission from the budget agreement deals with the gas tax.

There is no relief – none – on the price you pay for gas at the pump. The Governor’s proposal to “pause” the gas tax increase failed. (It has jumped 10 cents in the last two years and will be adjusted annually for inflation because of a Democrat

sponsored bill in 2020).

Therefore, instead of the Governor’s proposed “gas tax holiday” in late April, you will have another increase in the gasoline tax in July.

Pay Raises Included were pay raises for teachers and for state and state-supported local employees, such as deputies. They will receive a 5% increase plus another 5% next year.

Other Investments Counties will see $1.2 billion to assist in much needed school construction in addition to $2.5 billion for other educational needs.

As we do more to protect our state streams and rivers, the budget is investing $313 million. I insisted that we hire the staffing needed to

spend this money wisely.

Our 4-H centers around the state had to close their camps because of Covid.

My amendment will assist them as they get back on their feet.

At my urging, money was set aside for a Forest Sustainability Fund to help protect our woodlands from solar farm expansions.

Additionally, for those who suffer from brain injury, I was able to get additional assistance.

Likewise, money was included to continue the Southern Virginia Higher Ed Center’s Information Technology Academy.

Wisely, the budget set aside an additional $1.7 billion if the economy falters.

Overall, state spending will

be nearly twice as much as when Governor McDonnell left office eight years ago in 2014. Inflation is a significant factor, but also many bills that were enacted the last two years now must be paid for. While Virginia’s budget remains balanced (unlike the federal budget), we need a renewed focus on getting the growth of state government under control.

This budget now goes to Governor Youngkin for review – and his suggested changes. We will be returning to Richmond to consider his proposed changes in the next week or so.

Bullion Investing Gains Momentum, But It’s Not Mainstream CLINT SIEGNER MONEY METALS NEWS SERVICE

The wave of investors buying physical gold and silver over the past two years has certainly impacted the markets.

Retail demand for coins, rounds, and bars is now multiples of what it was prior to the COVID outbreak and the 2020 presidential election. Mints and refiners are still working to add enough capacity.

While American investors at large may feel more than a little nervous about their portfolios, most are still listening to their financial advisors. The decision to dump some paper assets and buy physical bullion still looks like a radical move. Only a small fraction are ready to make it.

Long-time goldbugs wonder when, and if, bullion investing might move from the “fringe” into the mainstream.

The perception is that a reckoning is coming in the conventional financial markets. If the bubbles there start popping, there will

be very few places to run.

It will be time for physical metal to shine.

The theory makes plenty of sense. But it has been making sense for the past one and a half decades. The “when” is, in many ways, more important than the “why.”

So when will the trickle of Americans buying bullion give way to a flood?

Correctly guessing the answer is essentially an exercise in mass psychology, which is to say it is anything but an exact science. The best we can offer is a signal we think is likely to indicate this migration has begun.

Watch the premiums for large bars – 1000 oz silver bars and one kilo gold bars.

Dealers like Money Metals offer these bars and publish their pricing.

These are the bars, along with 100 oz gold, stored and traded in the COMEX vault system. Mints, refiners and other industrial users for precious metal purchase large bars for use in production. If a large investor wants to buy physical metal, these bars are by far the most economical way to do it.

Premiums for large bars are historically quite stable.

Buyers have generally been able to get metal in whatever quantity was needed at something very close to the paper market price.

Demand for retail-sized coins, rounds and bars spiked higher just over two years ago when demand overwhelmed the ability of producers and dealers to supply. Large bars, however, have remained in stock and available.

At least for the most part.

There was a tremor in thousand-ounce silver bar premiums in the spring of 2020.

Prices took a healthy leap higher when bullion banks sold more paper silver than they should have and were caught short by the number of buyers taking actual delivery.

Premiums have stabilized since then. Outside of that event, higher premiums have been driven exclusively by too little fabrication capacity to meet the surging demand for smaller products. Surging premiums for larger bars will indicate a shortage in supply rather than manufacturing capacity.

Mine production is sufficient to meet demand for industrial use and for a

modest level of investment demand. It will not be anywhere near sufficient for any larger scale rotation out of conventional financial assets and into metal.

The inventory of COMEX silver bars dropped to a 4-year low last week. These inventories are certainly worth watching.

In truth, however, there hasn’t been a reliable correlation between lower COMEX inventory and higher prices. When declining stocks translate into higher bar premiums, investors can know something is afoot.

Mary R. Neathery

Sharon Faye McCormick, 59, of Sutherland passed away on Tuesday, June 7, 2022. Born December 24, 1962, she was the daughter of Mary Lewis McCormick and the late Bobby Hilton McCormick.

Sharon retired from Food Lion Distribution Center after 20 years of dedicated service.

Her most recent job was what she called Nana’s Taxi Service, where she drove her grandchildren and all their friends wherever they needed to go. She was an avid yardsaler but mostly loved spending time with her beloved animals and grandchildren, doing whatever they wanted to do. She also enjoyed spending time with her toes in the sand at the beach.

She is survived by her two sons, Robert Dean Cox (Melissa) and Timothy Allen Cox (Amy); three cherished grandchildren, Thane Andrew Cox, Bently Lee Cox and Sandy-Nicole Marie Cox; mother, Mary Lewis McCormick; brother, Terry Hilton McCormick (Carolyn); special aunt, Irene Grant (Russell); first cousin and best friend, Linda Lewis and other extended family members.

A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, June 14, 2022 at the Crater Road Chapel of E. Alvin Small Funeral Homes and Crematory, 3935 S. Crater Road, Petersburg, VA 23805. Interment will follow in Southlawn Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. on Monday June 13, 2022 at the funeral home.

Katherine Johnson Spivey, 87, of S. Prince George passed away on Sunday, June 5, 2022. Born February 14, 1935, she was the daughter of the late Gary and Gerty Johnson, and was also preceded in death by her son, Timothy R. Spivey; brother, Gary Johnson, Jr.; and sisters, Joann Norris and Mary Lou Parsons.

She was a longtime member of Woodlawn Baptist Church and retired from America Filtrona after many years of dedicated service.

She is survived by her husband, Billy Ray Spivey; son, Gary S. Spivey; grandson, Michael Spivey; and other extended family members.

A graveside service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, June 9, 2022 in Southlawn Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. Wednesday night, June 8, 2022 at the Crater Road Chapel of E. Alvin Small Funeral Homes and Crematory, 3935 S. Mary R. Neathery, 83, of Chester, passed away Friday, June 3, 2022.

She was born in North Carolina on August 24, 1938 to the late Eli and Loretta Cloud Rogers and was preceded in death by her brothers, Billy Jo, Shirley, Taft, Lonnie, and Lee Rogers. Ms. Neathery was a member of Colonial Heights Baptist Church and attended Calvary Baptist Church. She retired as a clerk from Richmond Rubber tire company and was a member of the Colonial Heights Optimist Club and Manchester Women’s Club. She is survived by her sons, Michael M. Neathery (Debra) of Colonial Heights and Dennis W. Neathery (Wilma) of Chester; grandchildren, Eric M. Neathery (Tiffany), Matthew M. Neathery (Megan), Chad Neathery (Shakanna), and Shannon Neathery; great-grandchildren, Andrew M. Neathery, Olive R. Neathery, and Avery G. Neathery; sister, June Stegerga of Sophia, NC; Charles M. Neathery of Diniwiddie, and numerous nieces and nephews. June 2, 1933 - June 1, 2022 Bettie Anne Shelton 88, of South Chesterfield, passed away on Wednesday, June 1, 2022, at Dinwiddie Health and Rehab Center. She was born on June 2, 1933, at her home in Petersburg, VA to Daniel Beauregard and Annie Belle Rudy Perkinson and was the wife of Alvin Morris Shelton Jr. She worked for many years as a substitute teacher’s aide in the Chesterfield County School System. She was also a very active member of the Wood’s United Methodist Church for many years. She was an adult choir member, was an active member in the WUMW and taught children’s Sunday school for many years. She also served as the Director of the Jr. Crafts Area for the Chesterfield County Fair for 30 years. She is survived by her husband of 69 years Alvin Morris Shelton, Jr., and her two sons Alvin Morris Shelton, III and Jeffrey Everett Shelton, Sr, and their wives, Nancy D. Shelton and Becky C. Shelton; four grandchildren Jeffrey Shelton, Jr., Jordan Shelton, Victoria Shelton Smith and Lauren Shelton; and four great grandchildren; Carter Shelton, Cole Shelton, Grant Shelton and Jeffrey Shelton, III, two sisters, Shirley Cimburke, and Mary Chalkley. A visitation service will be held at E. Margaret Hill Dacey, born March 20, 1925, in Eberstadt, Germany, departed this life on Thursday, June 2, 2022 at the age of 97.

In 1977, she was preceded in death by her husband, Major Donald D. P. Dacey, after 28 years of marriage. Survivors are son, Maurice D. Dacey of Prince George, VA and daughter, Donna E. Robinson of Dinwiddie, VA, six grandchildren: Wesley D. Dacey, Benjamin K. Dacey, Margaret Blair Dacey, Wendy Leeds, Gloria Moran, Michael Vreeland, also fifteen great grandchildren and several great-great grandchildren.

Margaret retired after 23 years of employment as an Accounting Supervisor from Allied Chemical Corporation in Hopewell, VA in 1987. After retirement, she immediately started her activities as a volunteer at Southside Regional Medical Center and as a volunteer tax preparer for low income and elderly people. As a member of Christ and Grace Episcopal Church, since 1962, she took part in many activities such as Sunday school, altar service, choir, feeding street people, and a mission trip to Belize in 2007.

She was a member of the Amateur Fencers League of America and received second place (silver) in the Virginia State Foil Final Championship at the College of William and Mary in 1971. In 1973, she was very proud to receive the Presidential Sports Award in fencing.

A graveside memorial service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, June 23, 2022 in Southlawn Memorial Park, 1911 Birdsong Road, South Prince George, VA 23805.

Ethel Harris Peden passed away after a short illness with her family by her side on June 2, 2022. Ethel was born on October 5, 1921 to John and Kitty Harris of Isle of Wight County. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Andrew Peden; brothers, Morris and John Raymond; sisters, Mary and Sallie; sons, Opha and Randy Peden; and one sweet grandson, Michael Peden. Ethel is survived by her three children, Dianne Gardner and her husband John, Gwendolyn Journey, and John Peden and Arlene; nine grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and special nephew, Gordon Nelson. She was the oldest member of Mill Swamp Baptist Church and was also a member of Harrowgate Baptist Church for over 50 years. She retired from Brown and Williamson Tobacco after 33 years of service. A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. on Thursday, June 9, 2022 at the Colonial Heights Chapel of E. Deborah Lee Vaughan, 68, of S. Chesterfield passed away on Wednesday, June 1, 2022. Born September 23, 1953, she was the daughter of the late William and Evelyn Skelton Rivers.

Deborah was an insurance biller at Johnston Willis Medical Center for a number of years, where she worked her way up to supervisor. She then left the hospital to work with her husband in reopening Hilltop Barbeque, where she ran the front end and eventually became a chef. When Hilltop closed its doors, Debbie continued her work as a chef and several restaurants in Chesterfield and Richmond.

She is survived by her loving and devoted husband of 39 years, Charles “Chuck” Allen Vaughan; sisters, Victoria Skalsky and Patricia Gorman; two nieces; two nephews; other extended family members and many friends.

A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, June 9, 2022 at the Colonial Heights Chapel of E. Alvin Small Funeral Homes, 2033 Boulevard. September 10, 1970 - May 30, 2022 Alvin Conly Cashion, 51, passed away on Monday, May 30, 2022.

He was born on September 10, 1970, in Richmond, Virginia. He was preceded in death by his father, William P. Cashion (October 2021), and his sister, Kimberly Cashion-Martin (March 2016).

Alvin loved to tell jokes and had an impeccable sense of humor.

He appeared on stage at the Comedy Club on Amateur Night in Short Pump, VA. He loved animals and was very compassionate about their welfare. He will be missed immensely and never forgotten. We will always carry Alvin’s memory in our hearts.

He is survived by his mother, Joyce Getling; his sister, Donna Hilley; brother, Wm. Craig Cashion; stepmother, Jean Cashion; and numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins.

Stella Mayrene Cox, 65, of Hopewell, passed away on Sunday, June 5, 2022.

She was born in Alabama to the late Hubert Chamblee and Nivazell Jones Chamblee. She was also preceded in death by her brothers, Billy Chamblee and his wife, Martha, and Ronald Chamblee.

Stella enjoyed sewing, embroidery, baking and decorating cakes. Her greatest passion in life was her family. She especially enjoyed traveling to Alabama and spending time with her family there. Stella is loved and will be greatly missed.

She leaves behind to cherish her memory her husband of 37 years, Stephen Cox; children, David Robinson (Marcy), Sue Toov (Doug), Kara Partin (Bubba), and Jason Cox (Dominique); grandchildren, Justin Holmgren, Amanda Reeb (Paul), and Korey Martin (Sadie); great-grandchildren, Paul Reeb and Silas Reeb; siblings, Leon Jones (Annette), Linda Maddox, and Tim Chamblee (Beverly); a niece who was like a daughter, Faith Chamblee; numerous nieces, nephews, extended family and friends; and two canine companions, Brodie and Mollie.

November 17, 1927 - June 5, 2022 Annie “Louise” Perkinson, 94, of Chesterfield, VA, died Sunday, June 5, 2022 at her daughter’s home.

Born in Mecklenburg County, VA, she was one of eleven children to Clarence Mckeevor and Mary Ruth Moore Walker. She was a pioneer at C&P Telephone company, retiring after 35 years of service. She owned and operated her own real estate brokerage firm, Louise Perkinson Real Estate, Inc. She is survived by her daughters, Susan Powers (Larry) and Laura Porter; four grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; her sister and brother.

Gordon “Bobo” Bohannan June 4, 2022

Gordon “Bobo” Wilson Bohannan, 82, of Surry County, Virginia, died at his home “Riverwind,” on the James in Surry, Virginia on Saturday, June 4, 2022. He was preceded in death by his parents, Willis and Jo Bohannan.

Bo was educated in the Petersburg public schools and then attended Christ Church School in Christchurch, Virginia. He then attended Louisburg College and Randolph Macon College, where he was a member of Phi Kappa Sigma and graduated in 1964.

He then attended William and Mary, where he graduated with a Master of Education in 1967. Bo spent his career as an educator in Dinwiddie, Chesterfield, and Surry County Public Schools. He was a longtime member of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Surry, where he was a trustee and served several terms on the Vestry. He was also a past president of the Historical Society in Surry County. Bo greatly enjoyed spending time outside; he enjoyed horticulture and particularly appreciated boxwoods, which he planted at his home. He also enjoyed all things baseball, traveling and Broadway musicals. Bo enjoyed a variety of pets throughout his life, but his main passion was his turtles. Bo is survived by his loving wife of 55 ½ years, Hannah Bohannan; sister, Suzanne Bohannan Georgel; niece, Elizabeth Georgel; nephews, Todd Georgel (Radie) and Trip Georgel (Amy); great nieces, Josephine Veserat, Logan Georgel, and Brooke Georgel; and great nephew, Randal Veserat. All services will be private. Jack was preceded in death by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Henry Smith III and his sister, Martha Fulghum Smith. Jack is survived by his son, Joseph Henry Smith V of Ashville, N.C.; fiancée, Susan Elizabeth Scott; sister, Anne Katherine Smith; cousins, William Hale Nunnally, Jr., Thomas Fulghum Nunnally, William Beach Smith; and his former wife, Karen Whelan Smith.

Jack attended Admiral Farragut Academy Preparatory School in St. Petersburg, Florida, graduated from Bollingbrook School in Petersburg, and attended Richard Bland College. Jack started his banking career at First Federal Savings Bank of Virginia and was Vice President at CPM Federal Credit Union. Jack was devoted to his family, loved civil war history, music, cars, boating and the sea, dogs, technology, woodworking, tennis, golf, and most of all, laughter and fun.

June Haynes-Garrett, 90, of Chester, VA, passed away quietly at home on Saturday, June 4, 2022.

She was born and raised in Brookneal, VA and was the daughter of the late Wesley and Ida Arthur.

She had been an active member of Chester United Methodist Church, multiple garden clubs, and the Chester Rotary Club. She was a national flower show judge and had been a member and president of multiple garden clubs. She was the first woman president of the Chester Rotary Club and received the Rotarian of the Year award.

She is survived by her daughter, Elizabeth Acord and her husband, Don; her grandsons, Ben Fabian and his wife, Trina, Sam Fabian, Jason Williamson and his wife, Susan, Brandon Williamson and his wife, Kristin. She is also survived by nine great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her first husband, Thomas Haynes; her second husband, Forrest Garrett; daughters, Wanda Williamson and Donna Haynes; son, Wesley Haynes; brother, James Arthur; and her parents, Wesley and Ida Arthur.

Ulla Hatchett, 77, of Chesterfield, VA, passed away on June 3, 2022. She was preceded in death by her parents, Haqvin and Maj-lise Tiderman, of Sweden; and her husband, Robert M. Brenda Burger Eggleston, 56, of Chester, VA, passed away on June 2, 2022. Born in Richmond, VA, she was the daughter of the late Martha Daniels Burger. Brenda was an active member of the Greater Richmond Chapter of the Hearing Loss Association. She enjoyed cross-stitching and creating stained glass artwork. Her greatest passion in life was her family who she dearly adored. Brenda is survived by her loving husband of 33 years, Matt Eggleston; her daughter, Sarah Eggleston; one granddaughter, Joyce Wood; and her father, Lou Burger and wife, Angie.

On Saturday, June 4, 2022, Frances Emma (Smith) Hiltner, 78 affectionately known as Fran or Franny, peacefully passed away with her son/ caretaker, Mike and Kimberly by her side in their home.

She was born on November 21, 1943 in Camden, New Jersey to the late Benjamin and Agnes (Laphan) Smith.

Fran attended Holy Name Catholic School and Woodrow Wilson High in East Camden, New Jersey. After graduation, she met the love of her life, William “Bill” Hiltner, Sr. They were blessed with four children, Teresa “Terri” Gibbs of Anderson, Indiana, Deborah “Debbi” Hiltner of Chesterfield, Virginia, Michael “Mike” Hiltner of Prince George, Virginia and William “Billy” Hiltner, Jr. of Petersburg, Virginia.

For over 20 years alongside her beloved husband, they owned and operated Perma Shine, Inc. She later retired from 7-Eleven in 2009.

Fran devoted her entire life to her family.

She always remained by her children’s side, giving them unconditional love.

Fran was preceded by her husband of 58 years William “Bill” Hiltner, Sr; her parents, Benjamin and Agnes (Laphan) Smith; brothers, Benjamin T. Smith, Jr., James Smith and John Smith; sisters, Agnes Winburn, Mary Jane McNeill and Dorothy Mazzei.

Left to cherish her memories are her two daughters, Terri and Debbi; two sons, Mike (Kimberly) and Billy (Quiona); four grandchildren, Timmy Gibbs, Jonathan “Chase” (Brooke) Brinson, Hannah Hiltner and Emilee Hiltner; one great-grandchild, Lincoln Brinson; two sisters-in-law, Brenda Dochterman (Bob) and Barbara Roletter (Bill); a host of nieces and nephews.

A private service will be held at the Virginia Veteran’s Cemetery at Amelia, Amelia, VA. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the Alzheimers Association in her memory.

With deepest sorrow, we announce that Purnell G. Batts Jr., “PJ”, our beloved son, brother, family member and friend departed this life on June 4, 2022, peacefully in his sleep. Those who knew PJ or encountered him even for a little, lost a shining light in their life. He was very loving and caring. He had such a great presence and charisma about him that charmed everyone he encountered.

PJ was born on December 14, 2001, to Annie Wilkins and Purnell Batts, Sr. in Petersburg, VA. He received his GED and enlisted in the U.S. Army at the Virginia Commonwealth Challenge Youth Academy in 2017. He was stationed in Colorado at Fort Carson and actively served in the Army for 2.5 years.

During his time in Colorado, he spent most of his time with close friend,s Moody, LT, Perry, Mark, and Floyd. He loved cars and his favorite was the Dodge Charger Scat Pack.

PJ was preceded in death by his father, Purnell Batts, Sr; and great grandmother, Vernell Arlene Batts.

He leaves to cherish in loving memory: his mother, Annie Wilkins; sister, Mahagony Wilkins; grandfather, Calvin Batts; grandmothers, Sandra Wilkins and Wanda Batts; god-sister, Dasia Jackson; god-brother, Eugene Washington, Jr. “E” of Petersburg, VA; and a host of aunts, uncles, cousins, other relatives and friends among them devoted, TreKwon Thomas, Thomas Taylor, Taeyon and Gianni Gibson, and BreAsia Clanton.

Rex C. Morgan

God in His infinite wisdom called his son, Mr. Rex C. Morgan, 72, to eternal rest on Saturday, June 4, 2022, at his residence in Petersburg, Virginia.

Rex was born to the late Hugh and Grace Morgan on April 29,1950 in Petersburg, Virginia. He graduated from Petersburg High School in 1970, and while in high school he was a member of the Varsity Football Team. His love for football continued throughout his life as a fan of the New York Giants.

Rex grew up on the “Waterfront”, and he bragged about it all the time, he loved his community. Rex enjoyed playing baseball and he was a member of the Dragons Baseball Team for many years, alongside other Waterfront friends. If you knew Rex, you knew how much he enjoyed keeping his car in tip-top shape.

In 1974, Rex was joined in Holy Matrimony to Roberta Morgan. To that union was born three daughters and five grandchildren, who were the joy of his life. Rex was a loving husband, father, and a great “PAPA”.

Rex was baptized at Metropolitan Baptist Church, and he was a faithful and devoted member to his church family. Rex served as Chairman of the Hospitality Committee for over 15 years and participated in the Marriage Ministry, Usher’s Ministry, and Men’s Ministry.

Rex loved all his church family and he thoroughly enjoyed serving others. He was known for his big smile, followed by his jokes. He had a heart of gold, and was especially proud to serve the seniors and youth of the church.

Rex retired from Phillip Morris as a machine worker. He later worked part-time for CDAAA, Crater District Area Agency on Aging. He enjoyed working with the elderly, transporting them to doctor’s appointments, dialysis, and other places.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Hugh and Grace Morgan: brother, Samuel Morgan: cousins, Al Ford, Gail Reid, and Tony Reid.

Rex leaves to cherish fond memories of him to a devoted wife of 47 years, Roberta H. Morgan; daughters, Carlette Smith-Robinson (Sean) of Tampa, FL, Danita Wynn, Latasha Dowtin (Sharieff), and Kimberly Morgan; five grandchildren, Tronell “TJ” Wynn, Tamia Morgan, Jabaris “Jt” Wynn, Harmony Redd, and Morgan Dowtin; two brothers, Donald Morgan and Chappell Morgan (Renee); sisters-in-law Delmar Morgan, Dorothy Howard, Deborah Jackson-Howard, Sharon Morgan, Deborah Howard, and Mary Howard. Rex cherished all his nieces, nephews, and cousins, always supporting them in all of their endeavors. Ava, born February 12, 2019, has returned to her heavenly home at the early age of 3.

Heaven welcomed her on May 31, 2022. Although we could have never prepared our hearts for such a tragedy to occur, we are undoubtedly certain that God received our angel.

Aside from never having been to school, Ava was highly intelligent & extremely jocose for her age. She knew her numbers 1-20, her alphabets, her colors, shapes, animals and their sounds, her grace, her prayers and her manners, amongst a list of other things.

Ava never missed an opportunity to make people laugh and she was always prepared to be the life of the party. At 3! was full of joy, had a caring heart, and a smile that could light the darkest room. She enjoyed being outside and exploring nature in any types of weather. She found entertainment in stepping and splashing in puddles when it rained.

She loved visiting her Nana’s house, taking bubble baths, drawing, watching shows like CoCoMelon, Mickey Mouse Clubhouse, LadyBug, and Bubble Guppies, eating snacks, and spending time with family & friends.

Ava admired the color blue and she had a special love for pets.

Her favorite stuffed item was her Minnie Mouse pillow; you would never see her without it. There are so many adjectives that could describe Ava and her personality -- if you’ve ever been afforded the chance to meet her, I’m positive she impacted you in a special way. Ava was loved by so many and will continue to hold a place in their hearts with her warm memories.

She served as a trustee/treasurer for many years. She attended Southside High and graduated from Dinwiddie High School in 1967. She graduated from Virginia State College in 1971. She was also a member of the Jolly Sunshine Adult Group.

Sandra was employed at Hopewell High School as a teacher for a short period of time and later employed at Virginia State University where she retired after 20 plus years of service.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her grandparents, Lemuel Crawley, Rosa Baugh Crawley, Bessie Tucker Crawley, Peton and Mary Freeman; uncle, John L. Crawley and her aunts, Idell C. Scott and Margaret R. Crawley.

Sandra leaves to cherish her memories: a devoted significant other, Emanuel Batts of Petersburg; one aunt, Mildred Crawley of Chesterfield; one uncle, James L. Crawley (Sheila) of Chesterfield; god-daughter, Sian Thomas; devoted neighbors, Louise Hill, Mary Alice Williams, the Gibbs family and Tommie Owens and family; and a host of devoted cousins, other relatives and friends.

Services will be held 2:00 P.M., Wednesday, June 8, 2022 at Tabernacle Baptist Church, 418 Halifax Street, Petersburg, VA, the Rev. Dr. Robert A. Diggs, Sr., and Pastor and Rev. Edward L. Fox III, eulogist. The interment to follow at Marmora Baptist Church Cemetery.

Trial Cancer Treatment Leads to Remission in All Patients STAFF REPORT LNNUSA.com

A cancer treatment study recently published in the New England Journal of Medicine has left all of its patient participants in remission, according to multiple media reports. The treatment involved administering under twenty patients suffering from rectal cancer with a monoclonal antibody called dostarlimab, the Epoch Times outlined. The drug was given to them every three weeks for six months, at the end of which time, all showed no signs of tumors. With the monoclonal antibody treatment, none of the patients required follow-up treatment such as radiation or chemotherapy.

The New York Times explained that the treatment “unmasks” cancer cells to the body’s immune system, allowing the natural immune response to attack those cells as they would any other disease. The treatment must undergo further study in more patients before any conclusions can be reached, but the trial provides hope for the treatment of cancer in the future.

DHS Releases Terror Alert as Political Tension Rises STAFF REPORT LNNUSA.com

The Department of Homeland Security issued a bulletin on Tuesday, June 7th, outlining multiple factors contributing to its increased alertness for domestic terrorism. The bulletin references the recent shooting in Uvalde, Texas, as well as public concern about the US-Mexico border. But the timing of the terror alert coincides very particularly with another event mentioned in the bulletin- the abortion rights case challenging Roe v Wade being heard by the Supreme Court.

The Supreme Court justices are expected to release the court’s opinion on that case on Monday, June 13th, but The Epoch Times obtained footage of a virtual meeting of the group Shut Down D.C. in which members of the group plan to block all access to the Supreme Court in the hopes of preventing the justices from releasing an opinion that might overturn Roe v Wade. The DHS bulletin also cautioned other key locations that could be targets for activists on either side of the issue, stating, “[I]ndividuals who advocate both for and against abortion have, on public forums, encouraged violence, including against government, religious, and reproductive healthcare personnel and facilities, as well as those with opposing ideologies.”

Just one day after DHS released the domestic terror alert, a 26-year-old man from California was arrested near Justice Brett Kavanaugh’s home armed with a knife and a gun and admitting that he was there to kill the Justice. He has been charged with attempted murder.
