Petersburg Leaders Address New Path to Potential Casino PETERSBURG

PETERSBURG- On the morning of Thursday, June 2nd, Petersburg city leaders gathered for a press conference in the Petersburg Public Library to address the renewed potential for a casino in the city.

“I want to thank each and every one of you all for coming out today, we have such excellent, excellent news to share,” Mayor Sam Parham opened the press conference. He continued, calling the push to bring a casino to Petersburg a “full court press” to help the city.

Earlier in the year, the possibility of Petersburg receiving a gaming licenseand subsequently a casino- seemed to have died in a General Assembly committee, but amendments to the Commonwealth’s budget have revived Petersburg’s chances. With the passage of the budget bill, JLARC (the Joint Legislative Audit & Review Commission) will conduct a study of Petersburg to determine whether the city meets all of the criteria to be granted a gaming license by the state.

That study is already promising, according to State Senator Joe Morrissey. “A little secret- they’ve already done a preliminary report that Petersburg meets all of the markers for a host

casino city,” Morrissey told attendees.

A second amendment stops the City of Richmond from having another referendum to approve a casino in 2022, forcing any vote on the matter to the 2023 general election in November of that year. Richmond voters rejected the possibility of a casino when the referendum was on their ballot the first time, but some capital city leaders are eager to try again. HOPEWELL—In the wake of the tragic school shooting in Uvalde, Texas, in which 19 children and two teachers were killed, some school leaders have chosen to release statements to their school’s families and communities to reassure them of their support and concern for their childrens’ safety. Here locally, Hopewell Schools Superintendent Dr. Melody Hackney released a public comment, assuring the community that they can trust the school board to do everything in its power to protect Hopewell’s children attending school.

The superintendent pointed out that there is no “sense-making of this event”, and that protecting

“seen, loved and heard every day”.

She also stated that there will be an increase in the visibility and presence of school security officers along with those of the Hopewell Police and Sheriff ’s departments.

Hackney told residents, “We give you our word and promise that we will do everything in our power to prevent this from happening in Hopewell.”

Memorial Day Marked by Violence PETERSBURG

PETERSBURG- Memorial Day was marked by the return of violence to Petersburg. The afternoon of Monday, May 30th, police were called to the area of Summit and Hill Streets for a report of a shooting, as reported by WTVR CBS 6.

According to the report, a man was shot in the incident, but his injuries were not life threatening.

The shooting interrupted a brief respite from the violence that has gripped the city since the beginning of 2022. Petersburg officials and community leaders have struggled to address the problem despite meetings with state leaders and town halls for the public. The recent quiet on Petersburg’s streets may be related to extra presence and support from Virginia State Police, but it’s difficult to pinpoint the exact cause.

Despite Petersburg’s Memorial Day relapse, the shooting is not out of line with events across the Commonwealth and across the nation over the holiday weekend. WTKR News 3 out of Hampton Roads reported a shooting Saturday night, May 28th on the Virginia Beach oceanfront, leaving one victim in critical

condition. Virginia Beach Police were able to detain and hold the suspect in that incident, 21-year-old Lamont Walton. The same outlet reported a shooting that killed a 25-year-old man in Norfolk in the early hours of Monday morning. Other Memorial Day weekend shooting incidents occurred throughout Virginia, including Roanoke, Fredericksburg, Suffolk, and Woodbridge.

Across the country, similar incidents shook what would have otherwise been a calm holiday weekend, marking it with violence instead of remembrance. The Epoch Times reported 352 shootings across the U.S. over the three-day weekend, including eight mass shootings- shootings involving the death or injury of four or more people. Pennsylvania, New York, Ohio, Louisiana, Georgia, Michigan, and Tennessee are just a handful of the states that were impacted by violence over the holiday weekend.

Virginia- and Petersburg itself- fall in line with the rest of the country, a small part of the nationwide trend that continues to coat American streets in blood.

Whether the Petersburg incident indicates an end to the recent peace on area streets remains to be seen.

Graduation, Juneteenth, Other Events to Bring Volumes of Traffic to PG PRINCE GEORGE

PRINCE GEORGE– The Prince George High School Class of 2022 graduation ceremony will take place on Saturday, June 18, 2022, at the Prince George High School stadium, beginning at 9am.

But that’s not the only event taking place that morning. The Prince George Farmers Market will be open that Saturday morning and a Juneteenth celebration will be held in that same area.

All of these events combined are expected to create some traffic issues, especially the graduation ceremony which upwards of 5,000 people could attend.

To help relieve some traffic congestion, the Prince George School System has devised a plan for parking and shuttle transportation.

General parking will be available at the following locations:

- L.L. Beazley Elementary School (13400 Courthouse Road) - Prince George Courthouse (6601 Courts Drive) - J.E.J. Moore Middle School (11455 Prince George Drive) Shuttles will run continuously to and from these locations beginning at 7 am, according to Michael Campbell, Prince George Schools Coordinator of Communications & Public Relations.

Graduates will receive parking passes for the student parking lot at Prince George High School and can order handicap passes as well.

In the event of inclement

weather, the ceremony will be delayed in one-hour intervals through 4pm before being moved indoors to the Prince George High School gymnasium at 6 pm.

Prince George Police Lt. Paul Burroughs said the department will have extra units on site to help with the flow of traffic. Police are working with the school division on plans for shuttle pick up, as well as other plans to serve attendees and local traffic.

Burroughs suggested that those who don’t currently receive Nixle text message alerts sign up for the service to stay informed of traffic details- which include roads

impacted by graduation and other local events as well as vehicle accidents, letting subscribers know when roads are blocked and as they are cleared. To subscribe just text the zip code- in the case of Prince George’s graduation ceremony 23875- to the number 888777.

Beginning at 8 am that Saturday morning, 51 vendors will be lined up, featured in Prince George’s Juneteenth celebration, the oldest known celebration commemorating the ending of slavery in the U.S. Juneteenth is marked as a day of celebration of freedom, and local communities often come together for parades, reunions, park parties, Miss Juneteenth contests, and readings of the Emancipation Proclamation as well as the works of African American authors such as Maya Angelou. This year’s Prince George Juneteenth celebration will take place around Scott Park on Saturday, June 18th, beginning at 8 am.

Addressing Crime in Petersburg, Virginia PETERSBURG

Introduction

The crime rate in this city has increased tremendously. Most people call it gun violence because the crime is committed with a gun.

However, in my opinion the gun is not the problem…. the problem is the attitudes of those who seek to kill, rob and steal. These same actions would happen if there were no guns as there are other weapons…….the source of the weapon is not the problem. The people who commit such crimes are the problems and unfortunately, in our city it is mostly our youth.

In order to address what is going on, we must first understand the generation, understand why these children don’t mind losing their lives. Just like an actor wants to know who his audience is in order to know how to perform, how

to speak his lines, so that he knows how to make his appearance good, we must first know who among us is in need of help and again, we will find out it is our youth.

When you look at our youth, according to their ages, we call them children, but, in actuality, they have taken on the rolls of the adults who have failed them and issued them broken promises. They are doing all they can to survive in a system which has pushed them into a corner. Anyone who gets pushed into a corner comes out fighting and so our youth are doing just that.

We must admit that our children are living what they have learned and in order to turn things around, a whole new culture change must be instituted.

Let’s look at these broken systems, the broken promises: Children want and should always have a safe place to

live, but, with the eviction rate as high as it is, you can see that is not happening. Now, imagine getting off of the school bus with your friends and your family’s belongings are on the street because you have been evicted. How do you think that child feels and what pain must he endure as a result of such? At that point, that child has become traumatized, that child has become hurt, embarrassed , humiliated and is seeing the result of a broken promise.

Look at the child who comes home and there is no water, what does he use to brush his teeth? How does he bathe after being outside playing all day or at school at football practice all day?

What pain must this child endure? Again, broken promises of being taken care of, pain, humiliation and embarrassment.

Look at a child in school who does not have on the brand name clothes, the child who simply wants to

be accepted by his peers, but is not because of his clothing. How do you think he feels? Embarrassed, humiliated, not accepted by his peers.

I heard two elementary school girls in a school bathroom talking. They were devising ways to get money. Their answer was to get pregnant because it meant getting a check every month. And what did they want to do with the check, they wanted to buy clothes.

Their minds weren’t mature enough to know that they would have a child to take care of. They simply needed the money.

All of these scenarios puts a child in an adult role as the adults have failed them, robbed them of their basic rights so they go out to make money on their own and they know that selling drugs will get them there……..because we live in a system that does not pay attention to what is goCONTINUED ON PAGE 8

TRIPS: The students need to know about life outside of Petersburg. The science museum is a good place to start. Last year they had the dinosaur exhibit which would have opened the eyes our kids greatly.

(4) Separation by sexes in the middle school

The middle school consist of students who are in grades 6-8. They consist of students whose harmones are raging and the students do not know how to control things. They don’t understand their feelings or what to do with it. What they do know is what this society has taught them and the record will show girls having sex at a young age and teenage pregnancy soaring. Currently, the school board has removed the 6th graders and placed them in a school by themselves. I contend that they should separate the middle school boys from the middle school girls. This affords the boys to learn how to operate as they should and the same for the girls. It would serve as the appropriate time to learn socialization skills and how to interact with the opposite sex. When they go to high school and mix again, it would be with knowledge of how to interact with one another.

They will concentrate on their studies and not on the opposite sex. They are better prepared to address the issues set before them.

It changes the mindset of those on the city streets, it makes people accountable for their actions while using the city property.

A new attitude in the city. A difference in the level of respect and a path toward becoming a better citizen.

(2) Look around for things that can improve the attitudes of the youth. For instance, change some street names after African-Americans who once lived here and are now famous. For instance, Moses Malone who grew up poor and went directly to the NBA and never picked up a gun….or Ricky Hunley who grew up poor and never picked up a gun. They there is the Judge Roger Gregory who grew up here and never got into trouble…….

Children need someone to look up to….they need someone to relate to, they need some positive figures of people that they can emulate. Our city does not promote those who went on to do great things. Our children only have the thugs, the drug boys and other non-desirables to emulate after.......

Our children will gain more respect for themselves when they know that others, just like them who grew up

(3) Jobs for the youth

The kids are selling drugs to get money. Perhaps with a job, they could get money as well as gain some work experience. WE could develop a partnership program where the kids work side by side with some employees in the city.

At our Sports Complex is a lot of vacant land where a youth center can be built. The Sports Complex is the ideal place as it where most sporting events takes place and it is right behind the High School and the Middle School.

The Humanities Bill puts a Case Manager and or Social Worker in place to protect the children being evicted from living in the hotels with the sex offenders and drug addicts, it saves the citizens from mental health issues associated with evictions, it allows the social worker/case manager and the courts to collect data which can tell us why the evictions or non payments are taking place and it allows the tenant to get the help they need. RICHMOND- Virginia business owners will soon have a new option to provide paid family leave to their employees. A recently passed bill establishes a new class of insurance for paid family leave in the Commonwealth. The optional private insurance would cover loss of income for employees who have or adopt a child, but would also include receiving a foster child and caring for a family member with a serious health condition. Virginia is the first state in the country to create this class of private insurance, and lawmakers hope that it will serve as a means for employers to offer increased benefits to attract employees.

Governor Youngkin signed the bill on Tuesday, May 31st.

VEC to See Changes with Signing of New Bills

RICHMOND- Governor Glenn Youngkin signed three bills into law on Tuesday, May 31st that will create reform inside the Virginia Employment Commission. The agency was spotlighted in 2020 when a drastic uptick in unemployment claims sparked by pandemic shutdowns caused crippling processing backups.

In a press release, Senator Bryce Reeves (R- Spotsylvania) referenced fraudulent claims and payments uncovered as the VEC struggled to keep up with the influx, stating, “Senate Bill 769 puts proper guardrails in place at VEC and requires them to work with other state agencies to verify unemployment claims and perform system integrity checks.

We have a fiduciary responsibility to the taxpayers of Virginia and this bipartisan legislation will produce some much needed accountability.”

The new laws will require the VEC to verify unemployment claims as thoroughly as possible as well as conduct routine check ups to ensure the new guidelines are working properly. Senator Reeves’ bill mandates that the VEC fully investigate suspicious unemployment claims and reclaim any overpaid or fraudulent payments.

Two other bills, patroned by Delegate Kathy Byron (R- Bedford) and Senator Jeremy McPike (DPrince William), take additional measures to address dysfunction inside the agency using feedback from a November 2021 state report.

COLONIAL HEIGHTSThe Tri-City Chili Peppers opened their 2022 season with a home game against the Martinsville Mustangs on Thursday, May 26th. In a franchise first, the Chili Peppers shut out the Mustangs three to zero. Two runs in the very first inning gave the Peppers an early lead over their opponents. Starting pitcher, Randolph-Macon’s Hayden Snelsire, was a heavy contributor to the record-setting game, keeping

the reins on the Mustang’s hitters.

Colonial Heights mayor Greg Kochuba threw the ceremonial first pitch to launch the new season.

“We are really excited- first game for the Chili Peppers this season. The field looks awesome, we’ve been putting a lot of money into it.

We’re excited, look at the crowd, it’s just really crowded here!” Kochuba told LNN. Delegate Mike Cherry was also cheering on the Chili

Peppers on opening day.

“This is one of the great gems in Colonial Heights, which is Shepherd Stadium. We’re so excited to have the partnership we have with the Chili Peppers; they bring revenue, they bring tourism. Tonight’s an incredible night, sell-out crowd tonight,” Cherry said.

“What an incredible family atmosphere to come out and just have a wonderful night celebrating community and enjoying time here in Colo-

nial Heights.”

The Chili Peppers have played just as well in their games since opening night, remaining undefeated so far, and are currently number one in the Eastern Conference of the Coastal Plain League. The Peppers head into the weekend with two games on the schedule: the first on Saturday, June 4th against the Native American National Team, and the second on Sunday, June 5th against the Peninsula Pilots.

On Wednesday, May 25th, the players celebrated the end of the regular season with an awards ceremony, taking a moment of fellowship to recognize and appreciate the team’s players as well as highlight some outstanding performances on the court this season.

ELECTIONS AND REDISTRICTING SENATOR FRANK RUFF

15TH SENATE DISTRICT Over the course of the last two years, much has been reported about how political districts will look after the 2020 Census. We still do not know all that we should two years later.

Part of the delay was that the census numbers were slow to compile because census workers were hampered going to homes

knowing that Covid was rampant. This extended the data collection and processing that data while other employees did not want to go to the office.

Meanwhile, Virginia finally decided that we needed an impartial method of redistricting. That process almost came to a screeching halt when the Democrats gained a majority in the House of Delegates.

Democrats had supported the process in making it less political when they were in the minority. Most reversed that position in the majority.

However, enough understood that was wrong and the plan moved forward.

That plan was to have a committee composed of an equal number from each party to draw the new lines.

Should that committee be unsuccessful, which it was, the State Supreme Court would decide the lines.

That is what happened.

The case should then be closed. However, it is not.

Now, some want to fight it out in the courts.

Issues Before the Court Currently, there are two cases that are before the

courts. One case is a federal case that challenges how the Senate lines were drawn. Their argument deals with the districts that were designed to be minority majority districts. Their argument is that the lines should have been drawn to protect two senior senators who were drawn into the same district while another district was drawn with no incumbent right beside it.

The argument against this reasoning is that, of the seven senators with the most seniority from both parties, all were drawn into disCONTINUED ON PAGE 30

tricts with another senator.

This occurred because the Justices refused to consider where sitting senators resided.

The second case was filed to force another House of Delegates election this year.

Their argument is because the elections last fall were held in the districts created ten years ago. The old district lines had to be followed because the redistricting process was not completed in time. This case has now been withdrawn.

More Compact Districts When drawing new district lines, one can draw them many different ways. One factor was that counties and towns should not be needlessly split unless necessary. However, because

each district must have equal population, there will always be some jurisdictions divided. Additionally, to meet federal standards, minority districts must be drawn when possible.

Overall, the new General Assembly districts are more compact. If I have any criticism of the new districts, it would be this: Should the courts have ignored where incumbents live? Over half of the sitting members of the House and Senate currently live in districts with others. Without giving either party any advantage, a few lines could have been adjusted to avoid a massive turnover of experience in the next election. Experience is valuable.

The seven senators with

the most seniority are combined in districts with other incumbents. As the eighth most senior (not oldest, eight are older) I was fortunate to not be combined with another. I am disappointed to lose friends and constituents in Brunswick, Campbell, Dinwiddie, and Prince George, but I can still represent their values in Richmond. The new district is not new to me. In the past, I have represented Prince Edward and all of Halifax. Gaining those back as well as the balance of Danville and Pittsylvania results with a district with only 8% new voters. I look forward to being able to represent them.

2000 Mules I encourage everyone to

learn more about the study that followed the movement of cell phone users in the weeks leading up to the 2020 election. By following those that frequently were picking up ballots at various non-profit organization locations, the study was able to track over 2,000 individuals as they moved from one unsecured drop box to the next. Each was dropping a few ballots at each drop box, moving from one to the next. As we move forward, if we use these boxes in the future, we must have better knowledge as to the legitimacy of these ballots.

Peak Inflation or Peak Dollar?

Talk of “peak inflation” is helping to drive investor inflows back into stock and bond markets.

As the narrative goes, inflation readings have hit their highs for the year.

The Federal Reserve will hike rates until monetary policy “normalizes,” then declare victory over the very problem its policies unleashed.

This rosy scenario gained some traction on Friday after the government reported Personal Consumption Expenditures data. The Fed’s preferred “core” PCE measure came in at 4.9% annually in April, down from 5.2% in the previous month.

Conveniently for central bankers and Wall Street cheerleaders, the “core” rate excludes volatile food and energy prices.

Unfortunately for those who live in the real world,

there are no signs that food and energy prices are done rising. Per gallon gasoline costs hit fresh records across the country over Memorial Day weekend. And officials in Europe are warning of energy shortages and power blackouts extending into the winter.

Meanwhile, Africa faces a looming famine after critical grain supplies from Russia and Ukraine have been cut off.

Other parts of the world face poor harvests due to drought.

United Nations Secretary General Antonio Guterres said on May 18th that “the spectre of a global food shortage” haunts the global economy.

Perhaps some Americans will take heart in the fact that any price spikes in foodstuffs and fuel will be excluded from “core” inflation. But nobody who feels the impact of these rising costs on their household budget should be convinced that inflation has peaked.

Even if cost pressures do

peak at some point this year, inflation as measured officially or unofficially will almost certainly remain elevated above the Fed’s 2% target.

Federal Reserve notes will continue depreciating.

And they may even begin to depreciate more rapidly against foreign currencies.

The U.S. Dollar Index hit a multi-year peak of 104.9 on May 11th. The buck had been rallying, strangely, at the same time as it was losing purchasing power at the fastest rate in decades.

Over the past couple weeks, though, the Federal Reserve note has slid against the euro and other major fiat currencies. If phony dollar strength has indeed peaked, that may help send the message more broadly to investors that cash is no safe haven.

The safest currency in an environment where fiat currencies are all depreciating in real terms is hard currency. That means gold and silver, the ultimate alternative to all paper and digital assets.

We are likely far from a secular peak in gold and silver prices in terms of U.S. dollars. Silver would need to more than double from here just to match its previous high. And gold has yet to experience the sort of parabolic move seen in other commodities this year.

But regardless of where nominal prices head next, owners of physical bullion can rest comfortably knowing that their form of money will retain real value over time.

Polish Kielbasa SUBMITTED BY ALAN PRUETT

Ingredients • 3 to 4 packs Polish kielbasa, sliced ¾” thick • 2 medium onions, sliced • 2 green peppers, cut into 1” squares • 2 large cans diced tomatoes • 2 8-oz cans tomato sauce • 4 to 5 garlic cloves, minced • 1 tbsp olive oil • salt and pepper to taste

Ingredients 1. Heat oil in large, deep pan. Add kielbasa. Cook until slightly browned then remove from pan.

2. In same pan, add onions, peppers, and garlic. Cook until onions turn translucent. Add tomatoes and sauce.

3. Place kielbasa back into pan and simmer for an hour, adding salt and pepper to taste.

NOTES: • SERVE OVER RICE OR NOODLES. • IF YOU PREFER A THICKER SAUCE, ADD A CORNSTARCH/WATER MIXTURE A LITTLE AT A TIME UNTIL DESIRED TEXTURE IS REACHED. • ADJUST INGREDIENT AMOUNTS TO PERSONAL PREFERENCE.

Lance Warren Tucker, of Colonial Heights, Virginia; He was born on July 31, 1926, in Richmond, Virginia, and passed away on Friday, May 27, 2022, at the age of 95. Beloved husband of Jean A. Tucker for five years; father of sons, John (Sheri) of Petersburg, VA, Barry of Sutherland, VA, daughter, Karen (Ken) Vollmar of Davison, MI; stepfather to the late Darrell (Kathy) Varner of Black Hawk, SD, Susan (David) Oliver of Waterford, MI, and Sue (Vince) Foresta of Petersburg, VA. He was a grandfather to 11 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren.

He is survived by one brother, Linwood (Joyce) Tucker of California. Lance is preceded in death by his first wife, Donna; his father, Eli; mother, Nannie; three brothers, Lewis, Alfred, and Stuart; and a sister, Dorothy Rozof.

Lance was a World War II veteran, who served in the United States Navy from 1944 to 1946. He was an avid fisherman, hunter, and gardener, and also loved many sports, including NASCAR Auto Racing. Mr. Warren enjoyed the outdoors and traveling in the R.V. He retired in 1986 from G.M.S.P.O. in Drayton Plains, MI, after 30 years of dedicated service, and was also a part-time real estate sales associate for many years. He also worked for Kosma Enterprises, Inc. He enjoyed helping others in need, and will be greatly missed by loved ones, friends, and neighbors.

A funeral service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday, June 1, 2022, at the Colonial Heights Chapel of E. Alvin Small Funeral Homes & Crematory, 2033 Boulevard Colonial Heights, Virginia 23834. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service from 12:00 p.m. – 1:00 p.m. at the funeral home. A graveside service will be held at Great Lakes National Cemetery, Holly, Michigan, at a later date. Nettie Moore Mason, 83, of Colonial Heights passed away on Saturday, May 28, 2022. Born August 10, 1938, she was the daughter of the late Charles Joseph and Clara Estelle Moore, and was also preceded in death by her husband, Robert Edmond Mason; and sisters, Shirley Moore Cole and Brenda Peyton Blaha.

Nettie was a longtime member of Woodlawn Baptist Church. After 30 years of dedicated service in the cafeteria, she retired from Colonial Heights Public Schools. She loved working in her garden, reading and taking trips to the beach.

She is survived by her loving daughters, Tammy Lynne Mason (Jo Ellen) of Durham, NC, Kimberly Gail Mason Wells (C. Todd) of Disputanta, VA; grandchildren, Mason Lee Frazier (Kaylee Nicole) and Lauren Nicole Wells; great-grandchildren, Kynlee Ann Frazier and Kolson Lee Frazier; sisters, Josie Landers, Jackie Peyton Graham, Edna Chilton; brother, Wilbur Peyton III; dear friends, Willie Ragsdale and Carlene Mason; and numerous nieces, nephews and other extended family members.

A memorial service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, June 17, 2022 in the Colonial Heights Chapel of E. Alvin Small Funeral Homes and Crematory, 2033 Boulevard.

Allen West II was a loving father, master mechanic, and resident of Colonial Heights, Virginia, passed away unexpectedly at his home on May 28, 2022.

Jonathan is survived by his parents, Jonathan Allen West I and Joan Dorothea Weathersby West; his children, Ava Angel Chanel Williams and Jonathan Allen West III; sisters, Jourdan West of Holland, MI, Jessica West, and Janessa West of Williamsburg, VA; his Aunt, Alicia West of Kentwood, MI; two uncles, Robert (Monique)West of Battle Creek, MI, and Anthony (Belinda) Weathersby of Colorado Springs, CO; his grandmother, Hazel Weathersby and his grandfather, Charles Weathersby. He is the favorite uncle of two nieces and seven nephews. He is predeceased by his grandmother, Cynthia Ann West and grandfather, Brian Henry Moore West; his aunts, Charlotte Weathersby, Janice Weathersby, and uncle, Craig Weathersby.

Jonathan was born in Grand Rapids, Michigan on June 5, 1992, to Jonathan and Joan West. He graduated in 2011 from Woodside High in Newport, Virginia and in 2013 as a certified Master Mechanic from NASCAR Technical Institute, Charlotte, NC. He was a true gearhead and truly happy anytime he was working on a car. He was funny, kind, generous, a man of his word, and will always be remembered for his willingness to help others.

Jonathan was so excited about being a new father. Although his time with his children was short, he loved and treasured each moment he spent with them. He loved spending time with family and friends, especially on holidays. He had a smile and laugh that was infectious. He departed from this world much too soon but the love he shared will live on forever. He will be deeply missed by his family, friends and all who knew him. Millicent Bush Watts, 91, of Colonial Heights, Virginia, passed away on Thursday, May 26, 2022, after a brief illness.

She is preceded in death by her father, John Bush; mother, Millicent Bush; husband, William S. Watts; daughter, Judy Watts Bodenheimer; and granddaughter, Barbara Grant.

She is survived by her sons, Donald William Watts Sr. (Carol) and F. Alan Watts; grandchildren, J. Riley Combs (Teresa), Natalie Bultje (Kevin), Donald W. Watts Jr. (Nadine), and Jessica Musso (Sal); twelve great-grandchildren, a sister, Elizabeth Payne; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Millie, as she was affectionately known by most, and Bill were married on April 1, 1947. They resided in Colonial Heights and raised their three children. Millie worked in the banking and travel industries for many years until she retired. Millie was baptized as one of Jehovah’s Witnesses in September 1977- she always enjoyed talking with others about the Bible and her faith was so strong. She had many hobbies including gardening, knitting, spending time with her family, and traveling all over the world.

Alvis Leroy Lewis, 84, of Dinwiddie, passed away on June 1, 2022. He was preceded in death by his mother, Mary Dyson; father, Roy Lewis; stepmother; Margaret Lewis; brother, Calvin Lewis; and sister, Janie Ritt. Leroy drove tractor trailer trucks for most of his working years. He enjoyed fishing and hunting in his spare time.

He is survived by his loving wife of 61 years, Mildred Estelle (Branzelle) Lewis; 3 daughters, Lynne Laplante (Luke), Regina Richardson (Wayne), and Brenda Thompson (Al); 3 granddaughters, Elise Laplante (Keith), Cierra Main (Stephen), and Dana Laplante; 3 grandsons, Blake Richardson, Benjamin Thompson (Casey), and Alex Rosas (Sabrina); 2 great grandsons, Jordan Mack and Tyler Richardson; future great granddaughter, Aurora; and 2 sisters, Odelia Brockwell (Franklin) and Becky Madden (Al). The family will receive friends on Monday, June 6, 2022 from 5-7 PM at West End Baptist Church, 6506 Boydton Plank Road, Dinwiddie, where a funeral service will be held the following day at 10 AM. Edward Ashley Bridgman, 65, of Prince George, passed away on Tuesday, May 31, 2022. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Kristy Bridgman; father and mother, John and Lillian Bridgman; and father-in-law and mother-in-law, Benjamin and Bessie Harrison.

Edward Bridgman worked as an operator with Castle Equipment for 35 years and Perkinson Construction for 4 years. He loved operating his excavator. He enjoyed watching NASCAR and tending to his garden. Most of all, he loved spending time with his beloved grandchildren.

He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Debra Bridgman; sons, Shayne Bridgman (Wanda), and Chad Bridgman; grandchildren, Corey Bridgman (Ashleigh), Kate Bridgman, and Conner Bridgman; siblings, Johnny Bridgman, William Bridgman, Mitch Mackiewicz, Robert Bridgman, and Ruth Hatfield; brother-in-law, Timothy Harrison (Shelby); sister-inlaw, Melody Martin (Michael); and numerous nieces, nephews, and friends.

May 7, 1947 - May 31, 2022 Margret Frieda Gray, 75, of Petersburg, entered eternal rest on Tuesday, May 31, 2022. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Elbert Gray; and son-in-law, John Beattie.

She leaves behind to cherish her memory, her children, Marion Beattie, Marc Watko (Susan), Tonya Dempsey (Robert), and John Souza (Keilana); grandchildren, James Bright (Tiffany), Jessica Hughes (Jamie), KeAndre Souza, Dustin Helmer (Sarah), Kaiyla Souza, and Kaleb Souza; great-grandchildren, Jordan Bright, Skye White, Harper Hughes, and Cooper Bright; and best friends, Margaret Ann Smith and Sylvia Matthews.

Margret Gray was a faithful member of Monumental Baptist Church in Petersburg.

She worked there as secretary for many years and loved being with her church family. She will be dearly missed.

Thomas Earl Wiggins, Jr.

February 18, 1964 - May 29, 2022 Thomas Earl Wiggins, 58, of Dinwiddie, passed away on Sunday, May 29, 2022. Thomas was born and raised in Gates County, North Carolina before moving and settling to Dinwiddie County, Virginia. He was preceded in death by his father, Thomas Wiggins, Sr.; his biological son, Adrian Wiggins; and his step-grandchild, Bentley Nase. Thomas was a certified loader operator and trainer as well as a CDL holder. He served as a longtime heavy equipment operator for the state of North Carolina before working for CFS (also known as Meridian Waste). Thomas enjoyed fishing, camping, dancing, singing, family time, and spending time with his wife. He was a great cornhole player but an even better teammate. He will be remembered as a devoted husband, family patriarch, father, grandfather, and friend. To Thomas, everyone was a friend. If you didn’t like Thomas, you were likely the one that had the issue! Thomas was a quiet man, but he led with love, passion, and patience. Thomas also loved the Lord and was a righteous servant.

Thomas is survived by his loving wife, Pamela Zoanna Wiggins; his step-children, Destiney Barnes (Donald), Dustin Nase (Hollie), and Derek Sherlock (Tiffani); mother, Laura Wiggins; biological children, Kashanna Wiggins and Shantell Wiggins; grandchildren, Jordan Nase (Ofa), Justin Nase (fiancé, Kaylee), Kyla Nase, Kynslee Nase, Donald Alex Barnes (Christina), Dennis Barnes (Jordyn), Savannah Barnes, Austin Sherlock, Preslee Sherlock, and Paislee Sherlock; great grandchildren, Aiden Barnes and Malina Nase; sisters, Linda Riddick and Barbara Wiggins; and brother Earl Outland. Charles “Charlie” P. McAnally, 89, of Prince George County, Virginia went to his Heavenly home on May 28, 2022. He is survived by his daughter, Susan Antognozzi and her husband Joe; his son Christian McAnally; his granddaughter, Tiffany Rohrbaugh and her husband Jared; his sister Betty Meador; and several nephews and nieces. He is preceded in death by his wife, Valbruna.

Charlie spent 34 years in the US Military and retired in 1985 as Sergeant Major in the US Army. He enjoyed traveling the US with his late wife Valbruna. He was an avid Nascar fan and could often be found chatting with his buddies at the Hopewell VFW. He will be remembered as the most honest, compassionate, and selfless husband, father, and grandfather and will be tremendously missed by his loved ones, especially his daughter who was very close to him.

Robert “Bob” Edward Williamson, Sr., 85, of Chesterfield, VA passed away on Friday, May 27, 2022.

Born in Richmond, VA, he was the son of the late James C. Williamson, Sr. and Doris M. Williamson.

He was also preceded in death by a brother, James C. Williamson, Jr. Bob faithfully serve his country in the US Naval Reserves for 19 years and also retired from Philip Morris, USA Park 500 as a maintenance supervisor after many years of dedicated service. He was a Past President of the National Association of Power Engineers and had taught at Valley Career and Technical Center in Fishersville, VA and James Madison University. Bob was a member of the Chesterfield Master Gardeners Club and was a member of Mount Pleasant Baptist Church in Colonial Heights. He is survived by his loving wife of 64 years, Frances Carr Williamson; four children, Robert E. Williamson, Jr. (Cynthia), TerriLeigh W. Cummins, Timothy C. Williamson and Patrick L. Williamson (Katie); one brother, Philip W. Williamson (Sylvia); nine grandchildren, Robert Hardy, Kristen Williamson, Robert Williamson III, Robert Cummins III, Brooke Robinson (William), Annastasia Cummins, Whitney Williamson, Jacob Williamson and Isabella Guy; two great-granddaughters, Kynleigh and McKynna Talley; and numerous nieces and nephews. Ellen Conahan Brown

Ellen “Nell” Conahan Brown, 60, of Chester, Virginia, was set free in peace surrounded by her family on May 26th, 2022.

Nell was born in Pennsylvania with mother Natalie Stadnicki Conahan; father, Dennis John Conahan; sisters, Katie, Kathleen, Maggie; and brother Mike. Nell moved with her family to Wilmington, North Carolina where she graduated from Hoggard High School then earned a B.S. in Marketing from the University of North Carolina at Wilmington. Nell met and later married her husband Charlie in 1989, and began her career as an Army wife. Honorably serving this country alongside her husband, Nell selflessly cared for Soldiers and their families stateside and abroad for over 27 years in peace and war while raising her own family.

Nell is survived by her devoted husband Army Colonel (Retired) Charles Brown; their beautiful daughters Callie Brown Ruane (husband Nathan and granddaughter Olivia Nell) and Christina Brown; sister Maggie Pittman (husband Paul); brother Michael Conahan (wife Kelli); sisters-in-law Inga Dauphinee and Greta Jurado (husband Mario); nephews Ryan, John and Sam; and nieces Lauren, Greta, Kelsey, Ingrid, and Kendal.

A loving mother and grandmother, Nell spent every moment of her blessed life committed to her family and others. A devout Christian, Nell found the Holy Spirit which gave her peace and time needed for family and friends to love, hug and say “I love you”.

Nell cherished her beloved friends, finding such joy in supporting in any and every way she could. A wonderful cook and gardener proud of her Polish and Irish heritage, Nell was the ultimate host and loved entertaining.

Gloria Jean Gunn, 82, of Richmond, VA passed away on Wednesday, May 25, 2022. Born in Lunenburg, VA in 1939, she attended John Marshall High School and spent her career working as a civil servant at the Social Security Administration, FDIC and later retired from Bellwood DGSC. Gloria, affectionately known as “Momma,” “Nana,” and “Duchess,” was a free spirit and marched to the beat of her own drum.

She was beautiful, intelligent, caring, loyal, fierce and always “fashionably” late. She loved animals, music, dancing, beauty, laughter, cooking, and spending time with her family and close friends. Though her body failed, her spirit was strong and she was a warrior to the end. She will be dearly missed.

Gloria was preceded in death by her beloved parents, Larry and Bertie Gunn; and her cherished canine companion Sugar. She is survived by her three children, Cindy Inge, Bonnie Floyd and Bobby Bell; bonus daughters, Michelle Clifton, Kim Clifton; and her fur baby, Molly Gunn. She is also survived by six grandchildren, Brittney Altadonna, Mindy Stell (Dustin), Justin Floyd, Blaire Crawford, Misty Broughton and Ty Nguyen; four great-grandchildren, Lexi Altadonna, Bella Altadonna, Kaiden Crawford and Ellie Stell; and a small group of close friends. CPL. Michael Lavon Barger, of South Chesterfield, VA., departed this life on Sunday, May 22, 2022. He was born to his parents, the late, Roger Lavon and Lois Payne Barger of Asheville, NC. Mrs. Barbara June Fitzwater passed away peacefully at home Tuesday, May 25, 2022 after a prolonged illness.

Originally from Alum Creek, WV, Mrs. Fitzwater was born to the Reverend Albert M. and Mrs. Hallie Mae Waldron on August 1, 1937, and was the youngest of five children. She is survived by her brother, David; and sisters-in-law, Shirley Waldron and Rachael Waldron.

Mrs. Fitzwater was the widow of US Marine Corps Gunnery Sergeant Robert L. Fitzwater, who preceded her in death in 2015 following 55 years of marriage. Mrs. Fitzwater took great pride in accompanying and supporting her husband at many duty stations across the country for more than 20 years.

A life-long homemaker, loving wife, mother, grandmother, great and great-great-grandmother, Mrs. Fitzwater enjoyed music, birdwatching, and days at the beach.

She is survived by her two children, daughter, Tonya R. Smith, of Chester, Virginia, and son, Ronald D. Fitzwater, of Blowing Rock, North Carolina; along with eight grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.

April 20, 1934 - May 27, 2022 Millie S. McDaniel, fondly known as “Ganny” departed this earthly life on May 27, 2022. Millie was born to the late Annie Smith on April 20, 1934 in North Carolina.

She later relocated to the Historic Pocahontas Island Community in Petersburg, Virginia, where she spent her childhood years. Millie was educated in the Petersburg School System and was subsequently employed at Petersburg General Hospital (Southside Regional Medical Center) where she served for 37 years until she retired.

After retirement she went on to do private duty work showing her love, care and concern for others. Millie had a passion for taking care of others, especially her grandchildren and her great grandchildren.

In addition to her mother, Millie was preceded in death by her husband, George McDaniel; one sister Mary Francis Smith; two brothers, James Smith and Monroe Edwards; two aunts, Queen and Lena; two uncles, Dick and Garfield; and five nephews and one niece.

Millie leaves to mourn and cherish her memories: one devoted daughter, Harriet Davis; one devoted and dedicated granddaughter/caretaker, Tamika Davis-Coleman; one devoted grandson, Dwayne Davis; two loving and devoted great granddaughters, Terrika and Diamon Davis along with one great grandson, Dwayne Davis, Jr.; one bonus great granddaughter, Kinsley Jones; grandson-in-law, Marcus Coleman; one sister, Lilly Mae Kelley, along with several nieces and nephews. On Saturday, May 28, 2022, God called home one of his angels James Monroe Harrison, Sr., affectionately known as “Monroe”, 79, departed at VCU/MCV Medical Center, Richmond VA. He was born January13, 1943 to the late James and Ida N. Harrison in Ante, VA. He received his education in Dinwiddie County Public Schools and attended Southside High School.

Monroe accepted Christ at an early age and was a member of First Baptist Church-West Petersburg. On July 4, 1965, Monroe married Frances Stith, from this union they had two children, Tonnessa Scott and James Monroe Harrison, Jr. He drove tractor trailers for a living. He enjoyed fishing and spending time with his family and friends. He was an avid New York Giants fan.

He was preceded in death by his sisters, Lucille Thorpe, Ida L. Harrison, Beatrice Williams and Constance Jones; nephews, Raymond Russell and Corey Mills; nieces, Michelle and Bonnie Thorpe; and his best friend, James Jackson.

Gus Frank Danzey, 75, went to be with his Heavenly Father on May 27, 2022, after a long fight with cancer.

Gus was surrounded by his family and loved ones as he transitioned at his home.

He was born in Abbeville, Alabama, on August 22, 1946, to Floyd and Rosa Lee Danzey. Gus graduated from Henry County Training School in Abbeville, Alabama.

In 1968, he joined the United States Army and served for 24 years, retiring in 1992 at Fort Lee, Virginia. Gus earned numerous military accolades and received the Purple Heart for injuries sustained during his time in Vietnam. In 1978, while stationed in Fort Stewart, Georgia, he met his wife, Sitrenia Adams. They were married in 1979 in Fort Stewart, Georgia.

After his retirement from the United States Army, he re-entered the workforce retiring again in 2011 from John Tyler Community College located in Midlothian, Virginia.

Gus was a dedicated servant of God, serving as Deacon at his home church, Faith & Hope Temple Church of God In Christ located in Petersburg, Virginia.

In his free time, Gus loved volunteering, photography, and gardening. Anyone who knew him, praised him for his green thumb.

He also enjoyed spending quality time with his family.

Along with his parents, Gus was preceded in death by his sister, Betty Danzey; and many Darrius M. Wright other relatives and friends.

January 18, 1938 - May 27, 2022 Mr. John S. Hall, affectionately known as “Sidney”, 84, of 16111 Walkers Mill Road, Stony Creek, VA, entered into eternal peace as his daughter’s residence on Friday, May 27, 2022. Mr. Hall was born in Sussex, VA, the fifth child of Hugh and Elsie Pegram Hall.

He confessed Christ at an early age and joined the Rocky Mount Baptist Church. John was a former employee of The Watson Metal Company and he was a long-time farmer.

John was preceded in death by his wife of 60 years, Louise Bonner Hall; his parents, Hugh and Elsie Hall; four brothers, Mack, James and Melvin Hall and Frank Coleman; a sister, Alma Hill; and his children, Alvin Washington and Mary Fields.

He was preceded in death by his mother and father, Camelia E. Lewis and Marion A. Lewis; and his grandparents, Amelia Lewis and Reverend Bishop Benjamin Lewis.

Greg was a fun-loving, spiritual person. Although his spirituality was often tested but his faith was strong. He never gave up pursuing his faith in God and often challenged others to do the same. He enjoyed his family and friends. He was outspoken and had a lot to say. He would make you laugh at the presence of him being in the room.

He was educated in Richmond Public Schools system where he graduated at Armstrong High School and joined the frat club. He later went to college and graduated at NEC where he became a Certified Electrician. He was a self-made businessman, and was currently working for himself at Virginia Complete Windows in Richmond, VA and Atlanta, GA. His hobbies included going to meetings where he was a motivational speaker, drug counselor, and life coach. He enjoyed watching the Dallas Cowboys and babysitting his grandchildren.

Gregory was the grandson of the late Bishop Benjamin Lewis, member of Church of God and Christ where his grandfather introduced him to God at a young age. Growing up in the holiness church had manifested in his soul but he later chose the Muslim and/ or Islamic faith as his guide and anchor.

Catherine loves to have a good time with family and friends. She was loving, caring, and most importantly real and definitely a touch-one.

She accepted Christ at an early age. She held a membership at Bethany Baptist Church. She served on the Pastor’s Aid Society and Usher Board. Then later she joined Tabernacle Baptist Church and continued her ministry there.

‘Plan for the Worst’: CEO Confidence Wanes as Corporate America Prepares for Recession ANDREW MORAN

CEO confidence in the U.S. economy is waning as survey results and comments from top executives suggest a dim outlook.

The Conference Board’s secondquarter measurement of CEO sentiment revealed that 57 percent anticipate the economy to go through a “very short, mild recession.” This represented the fourth consecutive quarter of declining expectations.

According to the business research group’s regular survey, 61 percent of CEOs noted that general economic conditions were worse compared to six months ago, while 37 percent stated that conditions in their own industries were worse.

“CEO confidence weakened further in the second quarter, as executives contended with rising prices and supply chain challenges, which the war in Ukraine and renewed COVID restrictions in China exacerbated,” said Dana M. Peterson, chief economist of the Conference Board, in a statement. “Expectations for future conditions were also bleak, with 60 percent of executives anticipating the economy will worsen over the next six months—a marked rise from the 23 percent who held that view last quarter.”

A recession is defined as two consecutive quarters of negative economic growth, according to the National Bureau of Economic Research. But the Bureau broadened its recession indicators, looking at four other key areas: payroll employment, industrial output, volume of sales in the manufacturing and trade sectors, and inflationadjusted personal income.

Business leaders have been open about their consternation surrounding the broader economy.

Bob Bilbruck, CEO at Captjur, a technology and development services firm, shared his colleagues’ pessimistic assessment of the economy.

“I think many CEOs like myself know we are in a recession. We also know things are not all roses as the political class would have you believe.”

He also believes that surging gasoline prices, which hit a fresh all-time high of $4.622 per gallon on May 31, will force consumers to stop spending, which is bad news for the broader economy, which is two-thirds consumption.

“I think many CEOs are digging

in to ride out the storm and actually see the worsening recession as a good thing,” Bilbruck said.

“Money has been too easy too long, it’s had a very negative effect on the real economy. Wall Street has loved it, but all good times come to an end—this time I think it’s going to be a bad one much like 2008.”

Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk recently wrote on Twitter that a recession is “a good thing,” adding that an economic downturn could last for up to 18 months.

“Yes, but this is actually a good thing. It has been raining money on fools for too long. Some bankruptcies need to happen,” he said.

“Companies that are inherently negative cash flow (ie value destroyers) need to die, so that they stop consuming resources.”

Speaking at The Wall Street Journal’s Future of Everything Festival earlier this month, Wells Fargo CEO Charlie Scharf conceded that the country was heading for some type of economic downturn.

“I think it’s going to be hard to avoid some kind of recession,” he told the conference.

“But I also get the fact that everyone is so strong going into this, [which] should hopefully provide a cushion so that whatever recession there is, if there is one, is short and not all that deep.”

Morgan Stanley CEO James Gorman told shareholders at the company’s annual general meeting on May 26 that the odds of a recession are at less than 50 percent.

Anthony Capuano, CEO of the hotel chain Marriott International, told reporters at the World Economic Forum last week that “it certainly seems we’re headed” toward a recession.

Paul Knopp, the KPMG CEO, revealed to Yahoo Finance Live that “we’re on the watch for a potential recession.”

“It’s unclear as to whether or not that’s going to happen in the U.S. or not. But it’s certainly something that we’re closely watching,” he said.

But not all of Corporate America’s leaders think the sky is falling.

Best Buy CEO Corie Barry noted in a recent earnings call that the consumer electronics retailer is “not planning for a full recession,” although the company is “factoring in for softer demand.”

CNBC that the fund is not as pessimistic as many business leaders worldwide are. However, if there is a contraction in the economy, “it will be a light recession.”

Looking ahead, businesses, consumers, and investors should employ some caution under these conditions, recommends Goldman Sachs CEO David Solomon.

Overall, Mike Davis, founding partner at Olive Tree Ridge, a multi-strategy asset management firm, argues that the next recession will be different than what transpired in 2008, particularly on the labor front.

“The unemployment rates are all-time low. It’s very difficult to get great talent, retain great talent, and becomes more expensive to do so,” he stated.

“This is not the first time we’re finding ourselves in inflationary times. From a company perspective, I would spend some time looking at history. We are not alone.”

Who Will Survive?

Since the pandemic started more than two years ago, investors were ebullient over internet companies, from video conferencing (Zoom) to home entertainment (Netflix).

This year, however, it has been an entirely different story. The tech selloff has been brutal, with the Nasdaq Composite Index plummeting 25 percent. Many tech giants have offered lackluster earnings and provided weak guidance.

In this type of environment, companies need to “actually plan for the worst,” Davis said.

“I do think that we don’t even know where the bottom is yet, but a lot of people are trying to play the timing game,” he said. “I don’t think that’s the right move at all.

Things are going to get worse.”

Until companies’ indicators prove otherwise on a consistent basis, it will be critical for private enterprises to prepare, likening the situation to the classic “Ant and the Grasshopper” fable.

“Cash is the almighty,” he said.

Indeed, businesses with healthy margins and produce physical things are back with a vengeance.

The FTSE 100 Index and S&P/TSX Composite Index, benchmarks with a focus on commodities and industry, have slipped 1.5 percent and 2 percent, respectively.

Peter Oppenheimer, chief global equity strategist and head of Macro Research in Europe at Goldman Sachs, calls this the “postmodern cycle.”

If companies can routinely deliver high-quality products rather than inform customers that they are out of stock or the quality of goods has slipped, customers will appreciate it, even if costs rise, Davis noted.
