PETERSBURG- The response to the COVID-19 pandemic forced many children out of the classroom, sending them home to be taught remotely. The length of time that they learned virtually varied by state and school district; Peters-

burg students, like so many others, had to adjust to this new way of life until virtual learning became a new normal. After a year-and-ahalf of that new normal, they were called back into their classrooms, and the adjustment process began again.

But that readjustment process doesn’t come without

impacts, according to Dr. Maria Pitre-Martin, Superintendent of Petersburg Public School System.

In a recent exclusive interview with LNN, Dr. Pitre-Martin addressed the learning environment in Petersburg’s schools, particularly Petersburg High School. LNN reached out to

Dr. Pitre-Martin to request the interview after receiving three videos, each depicting a different fight occurring inside PHS. CRAIG RICHARDS: Doctor, you and I just reviewed that tape a few minutes ago.

SCHOOL FIGHTS FROM PAGE 2 We see three different fights that have occurred inside the school system. When we went through the tape, we can identify those as Petersburg High School. Are you comfortable with that?

DR. MARIA PITRE-MARTIN: Well, I will say there are some elements that I can say yes, that is Petersburg High School.

CR: Okay. Were you aware of these incidents? We’re being told it was from February.

MPM: So anytime there is this type of incident in a school, we are aware of it because there are discipline procedures that have to go from beginning to end based on our student code of conduct, so yes.

CR: So what actions were taken in these particular instances that you know of?

MPM: Just to give the public an overview of just nationally what has been going onCR: Sure MPM: So what we know to be true is that when we returned this school year- last school year, 75% of it was virtual, so the students came back after about a year and a half of being virtual- and so the students, we knew, probably in the first month, the students were struggling

to acclimate to structure and rules and, of course, policies.

So we looked around at what other school divisions were going through, and we could definitely see this was not just a Petersburg issueCR: Were you seeing that at each level, grade school, middle school, high school?

MPM: No, I think the older students become, we see these incidents occurring. So certainly yes, we were aware that nationally and then the state, those things were increasing. So typically when an incident like this occurs, then there is an investigation that begins immediately, the students are of course taken from that area of the building, parents are contacted, and the students are removed from campus.

CR: Well let’s touch on that for a minute. In the video we see- three different videos were posted there- we see two individual fights where there’s a limited number of students, either two or three, and then we see a cafeteria area fight where there’s multiple students. In the video, we don’t see adults stepping in to break students up.

What is the policy inside of the school for staff, resource officers- if a fight breaks out, how do they handle it?

MPM: I have to actually disagree with you on that point, because I did see adults who were stepping in to break it up, and again, sometimes it’s a challenge between students

and staff because sometimes they might look very close in age and in appearance, but I did see staff stepping in to break it upCR: So to that point, what is our policy if we have a staff member or resource officer?

MPM: Right, and we do ask, and they’re actually trained to de-escalate and to break up fights. Actually it is a required state training that they go through in order to do that, because we want them to do it appropriately so that they don’t injure themselves or others in that process, to do that very safely. So yes, there is training and protocols that we have put in place for that.

CR: What is the school sys-

MPM: It’s a zero-tolerance.

There is absolutely no tolerance for that kind of violence because it makes not only our students unsafe, but it makes our staff unsafe, so that’s why this is so concerning to us.

CR: So what happened to those students that were identified?

One of the things that our school board did, I think it was January 12th, they passed a school board policy in which the board’s discipline hearing committee hears all cases in which a student could be suspended for more than ten days. So actually those students go all the way to a school board committee for review.

CR: And is multiple offense from students, does that just build into a disciplinary action?

MPM: It definitely becomes part of any of the records that is reviewed during this process.

CR: And is it possible in this policy that our kids who are repeat offenders or are serious offenses could be expelled from the school system altogether?

MPM: That is correct. So we have a multi-page student code of conduct, and the most extreme discipline could be an expulsion, it could be a stint at an alternative program, and there are several programs that we work with as well as our own alternative program, so there’s a multitude of levels of discipline that students could receive. [...]

MPM: As we head into this

coming school year, and I know I’m departing, we really do want to continue to work with our families to help our children acclimate back. Because I must tell you that coming back after a year and a half, it has been a challenge for all school divisions to help students understand there are rules in place that must be followed.

CR: Now have you seen with the remote learning that was set up or required because of COVID, have you seen a reduction both in our kids performance and their social etiquette, social responsibilities?

MPM: So typically in any school division in America, after spring break, you will see an uptick. And it’s because the weather is warmer, students are out and about on the weekends and in the evenings way more than they were before, so you generally will see an uptick. What we saw this year was an uptick in the fall as well, which was different for many school

MPM: Well, and that’s why I brought up they have to reacclimate, because sitting in front of a computer and being in a class is very different from the social engagement you receive walking the hallways or sitting in a classroom. And so there are rules of engagement that you have to learn and abide by, and if you’re doing virtual, you’re not using those rules of engagement anymore. So when you get into a school, and there’s an altercation, you might not know what those rules of engagement are, or you might have forgotten, and so it’s a learning process for many of our students all over again. [...]

CR: Doctor, you’ve been a very big community advocate, and you’ve been very transparent; from our com-

CR: Are you seeing a pattern that they’ve peaked and seem to be down, or is it still an issue that we’re dealing with day to day?

But overall and actually, I was looking at some data for the Center of Homeland Security, and they have been collecting data on violence in schools, and they can attest to an increase across the country.

Petersburg City Public Schools Continues to Address Student Behavior PETERSBURG MEDIA RELEASE PETERSBURG CITY PUBLIC SCHOOLS

PETERSBURG — Petersburg City Public Schools continues its review of services and practices aimed at addressing negative student behaviors that school systems nationwide experienced this school year and tend to encounter when an academic year draws to a close.

“The people doing the work in Petersburg City Public Schools care very deeply about our students.

But those employees need us to help them help our students,” Petersburg City School Board Chairman Kenneth Pritchett said.

“We need the citizens of Petersburg to join school staff in reminding students that schools should be safe spaces. We need the people of Petersburg checking in on our young people and reminding them of this important message.”

In the fall of 2021, more aggressive student behavior was both predicted and experienced when schools across the country returned to in-person instruction after prolonged virtual learning. Petersburg City Public Schools leaders participated

in the following: • an Oct. 25 community forum on safety hosted by the division’s superintendent and the city’s police chief • a Nov. 3 and 11 school board meeting to review data and discuss restorative practices • a November exploration and installation of the division’s Men on a Mission program to bring community members, parents and caregivers into the schools as volunteers • a December school board approval of additional security officers in the school division • a Dec. 15 school board approval of “Guidelines for Student Use of Cellular Phones and Other Portable Communication Devices,”

which prohibited conduct including but not limited to recording, audio, video or both, violations of school board policies including, but not limited to, fighting • a Jan. 12 school board approval of guidelines to have all suspensions of 10 days or more reviewed by its School Board Disciplinary Committee to ensure consistency in disciplinary action and supports • referring students to a school-level student empowerment team and behavioral specialist for additional supports • Partnering with Petersburg law enforcement partners to determine the possible impact of community activities on student behaviors in schools

The aim with those steps is moving toward discipline that is corrective and restorative while affording due process to students.

The restorative component is especially critical for positively impacting student behavior, said Dr. Maria Pitre-Martin, the division’s superintendent.

“Correction that is strictly punitive misses the mark.

We want to restore students so that they return to school as better-adjusted individuals who can engage well with their peers and staff upon returning to our campuses,” Pitre-Martin said.

Mitigating strategies for safe schools also include the greater Petersburg community promoting the following: • adhering to routines that establish a sense of normalcy • maintaining safety in schools by following safety guidelines • adhering to the Petersburg City Public Schools student code of conduct • asking students and parents to communicate any personal safety concerns to school administrators in a timely manner

Personal Property Values Rising to Tune of 25 Percent, Some as Much as 50 Percent

Tax Rate also Expected to Go Up with Cuts in Reduced Relief Funds HOPEWELL

HOPEWELL – Residents in Hopewell are reacting after receiving notification that their personal property tax will go up at least 25 percent with some vehicles reaching a 50 percent hike.

Hopewell Commissioner of Revenue Debra Reason sent a letter out across the city explaining that she wanted taxpayers to be aware of these increases.

“The struggle of the auto industry’s current inventory shortage is real. The COVID-19 pandemic, plant shutdowns, microchip shortages and increasing shopper demand means auto manufactures are unable to keep up with market demand,” she added.

“These issues have led to an even higher demand for used vehicles which has caused the market value to increase at a rate we have never seen before.”

She said personal property values are going up across Virginia by an average of 25 percent.

This is not an increase in the tax rate, though it will impact what personal property owners in the city will pay.

However, this is coming at a time when neighboring Prince George County plans to decrease its tax rate, proving that other localities could also choose to provide a break. Personal property taxes are levied based on fair market values, but earlier this year, Governor Glenn Youngkin signed legislation that would allow vehicle tax rates to vary from rates for other categories of personal property, specifically in response to this change in vehicle valuations. The decision to make that change is up to local elected officials who could provide at least some

relief to citizens when it comes time for them to set their locality’s tax rates for the year.

However, it appears Hopewell leaders will not follow suit, as Reason informed taxpayers, the increase in assessed values and the possibility of reduced relief percentage will cause a vast majority of citizens to pay a higher personal property tax for the year 2022.

Some residents have shared their concerns that the majority of City Council is not protecting its revenue sources or doing anything to bring in new business.

One Hopewell resident shared that he believes the city would collect even more personal property funds from marina slip holders with those values going up in general.

“It’s so dramatic – changes in personal property tax across the state, 25% average increase for this year, some vehicles going up as much as 50 percent,” BetsyJo Noel commented about the letter sent to residents. “The letter blames COVID and the shortage in the auto industry! It also states that the citizens are being alerted early about the new tax rates so we can be prepared when the bills arrive. We will never get ahead and this will never end.”

Jimmy Lee Holt responded, “[D]efinitely sucks, I don’t know how much more money I can put out.

Everything is going up but pay.”

Reason explained she sent out the letter early, saying, “As your elected official I feel like it is my responsibility to keep you informed of dramatic changes in the value of your vehicles.”

Petersburg Faces Increasing Violence

City Leaders Plan Programs, Call for Families to Help PETERSBURG

PETERSBURG- So far, 2022 has been an increasingly violent year on Petersburg’s streets, with regular shootings that have left many families mourning the loss of loved ones. Most recently, four shootings occurred in just one weekend, leaving two people dead.

On Friday, April 22nd, police responded to three separate scenes inside an hour.

At the first, on Fort Mahone Street near Crater Road, Jamar Jones, aged 30, was shot in the head and later died. Just a few moments later and a few blocks away on Holly Hill Drive, one adult male and three juveniles ages 11, 12, and 16, sustained non-life threatening injuries from a second shooting and were treated at local hospitals. Shortly after that, police responded to the 1800 block of Boydton Plank Road where one adult male had been shot; he was transported to a Colonial Heights emergency medical center and then to a Richmond hospital, where he is in critical condition. In the early morning hours of Sunday, April 25th, police were called to the Marathon gas station in the 2700

State Senator Joe Morrissey also attended the press conference, assuring those in attendance that he had spoken with Governor Glenn Youngkin about the situation, and that the Governor has promised full resources to help Petersburg.

“I’m from this city. This is not gonna work. It’s gonna work when y’all get active.

Have community games with the community. Police, y’all take them uniforms off, take the uniforms off, put a basketball up, get the team, play the community.

Get a softball team, play the community. Build a different bond.”

LNN asked Police Chief Travis Christian during the press conference if there were short-term solutions that could be implemented to more immediately address the violence. He replied, “It takes time, and

the social worker and the social programs, they play a part in the rebuilding of our entire community. So that’s a component that’s necessary in an effort for us to move forward and do the things, and provide the resources that’s necessary for our city.”

While city leaders work to develop and fund long-term programs to address the violence running rampant in the streets, residents of Petersburg prepare for the possibility of another weekend of shootings.

Weston Manor Restarts Summer Concert Series HOPEWELL

HOPEWELL – The Historic Hopewell Foundation will feature spring and summer events again this year, kicking off its summer concert series on May 1st.

Hundreds attend these events at Weston Manor with different bands each Sunday.

And it’s free.

Game Changer, a band that performs “all styles and a variety”, will be the first on stage, followed by Rear View Mirror with rock, blues, and country on May 8th.

Next up is The Legal Tender Party Band that performs a variety of music.

The Donnie Barber Project is set to play its variety of music on May 22nd, and on May 29th, Magnolia is scheduled to perform its well-known classic southern rock.

“I think individuals or families can enjoy the event with a great view of the river behind the stage where the bands play,” Bill Wise said of the events. “We really enjoy the concerts, and all the bands have been really good.”

Their favorites include Magnolia and JC Williams Heart of Country band – “both great local bands”.

He and his wife Inez travel from their home in Colonial Heights to attend, but they both agree Weston Manor is a great location that’s convenient to travel to. “It’s not out of the way at all,” Bill Wise noted. “We don’t attend each week, it depends, but have always enjoyed it.”

The fact that it’s free is a big draw for the retired couple.

“Also you can bring a picnic or even buy food there,” Inez Wise said.

“It’s well-planned out,” Bill Wise complimented.

The Historic Hopewell Foundation recommends that concert-goers bring lawn chairs, blankets, and snacks or a picnic. However, concessions will be open to serve at a reasonable price, and the “All Manor of Things” Boutique is open as well.

A 50/50 drawing takes place to help raise funds, but participation isn’t required to attend the concerts.

The Foundation will also once again offer its lunchand-learn series held at the

Hopewell American Legion starting May 13th and running through the end of August, according to Weston Manor representatives. There are several different speakers scheduled beginning with Jeannie Langford, who will present Sweet Strings and Swaying Skirts, the story of Tubize Royal Hawaiian Orchestra. She also ends the series on August 31st with Titanic: The Local Connections.

grams start at noon and end around 1 pm. Participants can bring a bag lunch or order lunch from the American Legion. Drinks and dessert will be provided by the Foundation.

Petersburg Celebrates Historic Garden Week Community Members Open Homes to Preserve History PETERSBURG

PETERSBURG- Every April, the Garden Club of Virginia embarks on a complex and massive undertaking: Historic Garden Week. During this year’s Garden Week, April 23rd through April 30th, numerous localities across the Commonwealth were flooded with gardeners, florists, and tourists eager to get a peek inside the rooms and gardens of Virginia’s homes and landmarks.

In Petersburg, the tour list is fresh each year, with a different set of homes, both historic and modern, as well as gardens open to Garden Day ticket-holders. Some historic locations make recurring appearances on garden and holiday tours of the city- the Battersea Estate and Centre Hill Mansion are two such stops on the Petersburg leg of the tour.

This year, on Tuesday, April 26th, those two landmarks were accompanied on the tour map by four homes in the historic Poplar Lawn district close to downtown as well as a Japanese-inspired garden near Walnut Hill.

As guests tour homes throughout Virginia, they are also treated to lovely living works of art- floral arrangements created by

members of local chapters of the Garden Club of Virginia.

The Petersburg Garden Club crafted the beautiful and unique arrangements featured in the homes on this year’s tour.

While the Petersburg Garden Day tour offers an inside glimpse of the beautiful homes and gardens in and near the city, it also serves as a way to preserve Virginia history. The money raised statewide via ticket sales for the tour goes to assist in the preservation of historic sites across Virginia, a list of fifty locations including Bacon’s Castle in nearby Surry, Mount Vernon, and one of Petersburg’s own landmarks and tour stops- Centre Hill Mansion. In addition to the restoration and preservation of these sites, the monies raised also fund a landscape architecture research fellowship program and support projects at Virginia State Parks.

The 2022 Historic Garden Week event featured 28 individual tours across the Commonwealth, from the Appalachians to the Atlantic. While the tradition of Garden Week in Virginia can be traced back to 1929, each spring, the dedicated members of local garden clubs provide fresh opportunities to gain a new perspective into Virginia’s unique and varied communities.

PGCPS Feet Meet Benefiting Special Olympics Virginia Brings Community Together for Good Cause

PRINCE GEORGE- Crystal-blue skies and a gentle breeze greeted participants and attendees of Prince George County Public Schools’ third annual Feet Meet event at Prince George High School’s athletic field on Wednesday, April 20th.

Benefiting Special Olympics Virginia, the event serves as a unified track and field meet where students

with and without intellectual disabilities partner to train and represent their school at the high school sports complex. This event promotes physical activity, forming new friendships, encourages teamwork, and inspires leadership and unity among our entire school community.

Wednesday, hundreds of students from Prince George County’s five elementary schools, J.E.J. Moore Middle School, N.B. Clements Junior High

School and Prince George High School descended on the athletic grounds to participate and volunteer in this event. Watching on from the stadium seating, friends, families, and community members cheered on participants and offered smiles and words of encouragement.

VCBL Swings into Season TRI-CITIES

TRI-CITIES— Some of the best surprises are in unexpected places, especially in the Virginia spring.

Passing along backroad countryside in Dinwiddie County takes you right past the location of such a surprise if you don’t know what you’re looking for on a bright, sunny afternoon drive.

If fortunate, you might notice a grassy lot filled with cars, a snack shack lined up with hungry folks, a couple of concrete dugouts, a tin-roofed grand stand for spectators, all surrounding a well-maintained baseball diamond.

And, then, of course, as you neared, you might hear some energetic music accompanying the sound of excited fans cheering, and the crack of baseballs being struck by bats. You might also catch the fragrance of various beverages, barbecued chicken, and grilled hotdogs.

These are the trappings of baseball season, and to the joy and excitement of many, the Virginia Commonwealth Baseball League threw its first pitch into the 2022 season last Sunday, April 24th. The DC (Dinwiddie County) Giants took on the Chuckatuck Trotters, their biggest challenger from the previous year, in which the Giants won the champion-

ship.

Giants coach Chia Taylor praised the Trotters for being such a competitive team and added that the Giants had won the championship for the last seven years in a row. Further, Taylor said, “We’ve been the champions for a total of 25 years.

We’ve done fairly well, and we’re just trying to keep the tradition going.”

Taylor praised his players, explaining that his core group of players were largely responsible for their outstanding championship record. “We hit the ball very well, and we play a great defense,” said Taylor.

Part of that competitive edge also rests in keeping the team together, which is one of the roles of Carl Hawks, the Giant’s general manager who began as the team bat boy in 1976.

Hawks played for the team for nine years starting in 1981, and then became the manager.

“It’s a fun organization to play with,” said Hawks.

“Everyone plays well together, and we strive to get better every year. We strive to keep on going.”

President of the DC Giants, Phyllis Jackson, explained that there are eight teams in the VCBL this year. “That is a blessing,” she said, adding that that generates more competition within the league.

“The teams are very competitive,” said the president.

“And, of course, everyone wants to beat the Giants. I can’t be angry at them for wanting them to beat the Giants. You’ve got to play the best to beat the best.”

Jackson described the positive, exciting atmosphere of the games. “Good ball players, good family, good friends. Everybody gets

along together.”

A fan of baseball in general, and of the VCBL, Tom Redfern pointed out that the league has been around for 52 years. “It’s a neat atmosphere… private fields on private land. It’s good old-fashioned baseball.”

Redfern stated that he enjoys the variety of players within the league, pointing out that some players are still in high school or college, older or younger.

“They just want to play baseball, and they’re good enough to play in this league. There’s some good ball play here, and it’s like a picnic atmosphere.”

“Every time I’m here, and there’s a foul ball hit, I’m the kid that runs for it,” said the aspiring baseball player.

He continued, stating that it’s a lot of fun, and that he plans to play baseball next year, adding that “making diving catches and making the crowd go hyper” are exciting for him. About baseball in general, Javion said people should “have fun and do your thing” before sprinting away to recover two foul balls.

Cavaliers Secure Road Victory,

WINSTON-SALEM, NC – The Petersburg Cavaliers extend their perfect streak to eleven games with a win over the Winston-Salem Wolves. The 4-6 Wolves put up a formidable challenge to the undefeated Cavs but were unable to secure the win as the Cavs edged out a three point victory.

The Wolves took an early lead, closing the first period ahead of the visiting Cavs 34-28. But at the half the Cavaliers had regained control of the game, outscoring the Wolves 33-20 in the second, heading into halftime with a 61 to 54 lead. Strong play by Elijah Moore, who dropped 25 first half points, had positioned the Cavs for a strong finish.

The third saw the two teams grind it out in a relatively low-scoring period, Cavs with 19 points, Wolves with 18. The eleventh win of a perfect season looked well in hand until a sudden lightning strike. That’s when the Wolves’ shooting guard lived up to his position title. Timothy Haggie,

who was held scoreless in the third and made just 13 points in the first half, unleashed a firestorm of scoring. Haggie drained 18 fourth period points as the Wolves collectively scored 34 points in the closing period.

That barrage of offense chewed up the Cavs’ lead and transformed the final period into a game of survival for the Cavaliers. Walter Williams responded with 12 fourth period points of his own, and the Cavaliers mustered 29 total fourth period points to hold off the hungry pack of Wolves.

The Cavaliers struggled from the line, shooting 59%, 17 of 29. The Wolves fared slightly better at 64% going 16 for 25. Moore would lead all scorers with a dominating 37 points on the evening, followed by the Wolves’ Haggie with 31 and Williams with 30.

The 109-106 victory secured the Cavaliers the regular season Mid-South Conference Champions, regular season North-West Division Championship, and the #1 seed in the playoffs.

Virginia Awarded Over $600k for School Crisis Management STAFF REPORT LNNUSA.com

RICHMOND- Virginia’s Department of Criminal Justice Services has been awarded a grant of $631,232 by the US Department of Justice’s Office of Community Oriented Policing Services as part of its School Violence Prevention Program.

Governor Youngkin announced on Tuesday, April 26th that the funding would be used to address school safety issues via a new crisis management enhancement project.

“I am pleased to see Virginia developing stronger school-law enforcement partnerships,” said Governor Youngkin. “This funding will have a significant impact on the safety and wellbeing of our school communities in Virginia.”

The crisis management enhancement project is designed to increase communication and coordination between school officials and law enforcement.

The funds and program will be managed by the Department of Criminal

POLICE SEEK ROBBERY SUSPECT CHESTERFIELD COUNTY POLICE DEPARTMENT PRESS RELEASE

CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, VA – Police are searching for a suspect who robbed the Amoco, located at 11531 Midlothian Turnpike at about 6:10 P.M. today. No one was injured during the incident.

Police said a suspect entered the business, passed a

note, and demanded money from the store employee.

The suspect then went behind the counter and retrieved an undisclosed amount of money from the register. The suspect then fled the store on foot.

The suspect is described as a black male with a thin build, approximately 20 25 years of age. The suspect was wearing grey pants, a

short sleeve black shirt with an Anime character on the front, and a black ski mask.

Anyone with information should contact the Chesterfield County Police Department at 804-748-1251 or Crime Solvers at 804-7480660 or through the P3 app.

Check Fraud Atlantic Union Bank: 1973 | April 25, 2022

This week, the Chesterfield County/Colonial Heights Crime Solvers program needs your help to solve a grand larceny.

On March 25, 2022, a male suspect entered the Atlantic Union Bank at 11101 Hull Street Road in Chesterfield County and passed a fraudulent check for over $4,000. Payment was made to the suspect before he left the branch. The suspect then attempted to pass another fraudulent check for over $4,000 at an Atlantic Union Bank on Midlothian Turnpike but was unsuccessful. The suspect is described as a white male wearing a green shirt and tan ballcap.

15TH SENATE DISTRICT In the last couple of years, our former governor bragged about how Virginia was rated number one

by CNBC. That sounded good, however, if Virginia was fairly rated number one, why have North Carolina, South Carolina, Texas, and Florida all been getting more companies moving to them than we are? These are the facts behind those two conflicting beliefs.

CNBC rating was once well respected. In recent years, they have let their “woke” thinking change the way they ranked states. They

rank such things as trained workforce, available sites, college level attainment, quality of life, and cost of living. More recently, they added intangible criteria such as equity and diversity.

These are not the issues on which most chief executives base their decisions. When surveyed, CEOs rate Virginia between 14th and 20th.

We in turn are doing the same to remain first.

The Major Employment and Investment Commission Better known as MEI, is the oversight group that evaluates the major projects

that come before the Partnership for consideration to ensure that a project is truly a good investment for the state. I currently sit on that commission and served as chairman in 2018-19.

During my tenure, funding was approved for projects around the state including Amazon HQ2 in Northern Virginia, Blue Star Gloves in Southwest, CoStar in Richmond, Microsoft in Southern Virginia, Volvo Truck in Roanoke region, CMA CGM in Tidewater, Merck in the Valley plus others around the Commonwealth. I am delighted that Delegate Danny Marshall has recently been appointed also.

Silver Supply Deficit Frames Bullish Outlook STEFAN GLEASON MONEY METALS NEWS SERVICE

Silver prices have retreated since hitting a multi-year high in early March. While disappointing to bulls, they should find some encouragement in the white metal’s technical and fundamental drivers.

To begin with, gold and silver are still up for the year overall. By contrast, stock and bond markets are sticking investors with large losses.

Investors are finding out the hard way that in an environment of high inflation and rising interest rates, there are no safe havens in paper assets.

Precious metals aren’t immune from market volatility, but they are exhibiting more technical strength in this environment than conventional financial assets.

The adjacent chart shows silver’s recent price action against its 200-day moving average line.

The 200-day moving average acted as resistance multiple times until it was broken decisively in March.

It may now serve as support

in the $24 range.

Of course, bulls would like to see long-term moving averages turn up. For now, they are reflecting choppy price action – something that will eventually give way to a directional trend.

The fundamentals for silver generally support the case for higher prices. Last year was a stellar one for silver demand, as confirmed by the Silver Institute’s recently released World Silver Survey 2022.

The Silver Institute reports, “The global silver market realized growth in every demand category in 2021, marking the first time all key sectors rose in tandem since 1997.

Surpassing pre-pandemic volumes, total global silver demand achieved its highest level since 2015, surging 19 percent to 1.05 billion ounces…”

Bullion demand came in especially strong: “Physical silver investment (sales of silver coins and bars) leaped by 36 percent to 278.7 Moz, its highest level since 2015, as retail investors in North America and Europe, motivated by safe-haven and inflationary concerns, took advantage of periodically lower silver prices to purchase coins and bars.”

Supply, meanwhile, failed to keep up with demand.

The silver market experienced a deficit of 51.8 million ounces, according to the World Silver Survey, the biggest since 2010.

This year, industrial demand for silver is expected to rise to a new record, driven largely by growth in solar and other electrical applications.

Investment demand is more of a wild card but is likely to remain strong given the threats of war and inflation, along with possible further underperformance of financial markets.

Trading out of assets that are being produced in surplus for those that are facing supply shortfalls is an obvious value play.

Inflation is a reflection of the fact that too many currency units are being created. Despite the Federal Reserve’s vow to try to tame inflation by hiking rates, total currency supply remains

on an upward path.

Owning an asset that is becoming increasingly scarce, like silver, offers tremendous upside potential while providing long-term protection against currency depreciation.

Ingredients • 2 bags Success Tri-Color Quinoa • 4 cups chicken broth • 1 cup canned diced tomatoes • 1 cup frozen peas • 3/4 teaspoon smoked paprika • 3 tablespoons olive oil • 3 cloves garlic, minced • 1 teaspoon paprika • 3/4 teaspoon salt • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper • 1 onion, sliced into 1/4-inch rounds • 1 red bell pepper, halved • 4 boneless, skinless chicken thighs • 12 ounces medium shrimp, peeled and deveined • 2 cured chorizo sausages • 1/4 cup finely chopped fresh parsley • 3 tablespoons lemon juice

INSTRUCTIONS 1. Preheat grill to medium-high heat; grease grates well.

2. Prepare quinoa according to package directions, substituting chicken broth for water. Drain, reserving 1 cup chicken broth.

3. In large saucepan, stir diced tomatoes with reserved chicken broth; bring to boil. Cook 3-5 minutes, or until thickened slightly.

Stir in quinoa, peas and smoked paprika. Cook 1 minute. Cover and let stand 10 minutes.

4. In small bowl, stir olive oil, garlic, paprika, salt and pepper.

Brush marinade over onion and red pepper. Toss half of remaining

marinade with chicken and remaining marinade with shrimp.

5. Grill chicken 6-8 minutes per side, or until well-marked and internal temperature reaches 165 F. Grill sausages, turning occasionally, 6-8 minutes, or until well-marked and heated through.

Grill shrimp 2-3 minutes per side, or until well-marked and cooked through. Grill red pepper and onion 2-3 minutes per side, or until well-marked and tender.

6. Chop chicken, sausage, red pepper and onion into bite-size pieces. Stir into quinoa mixture. Stir in shrimp, parsley and lemon juice. Serve warm or at room temperature.

Evelyn Ruzicka Oliver

Evelyn “Nita” Spain, 76, of Prince George County, VA was called to her heavenly home on April 22, 2022. She was the daughter of the late John Arthur and Anna Drummond Moody. She was a graduate of Hopewell High School and a long-time employee of Hercules, Inc. After retiring, she was able to dedicate more time pursuing things she was passionate about.

She spent years working as a teacher’s aide for Prince George County Schools at the elementary level. She loved working with and being around children. She was lovingly referred to as Nana by all who knew her.

She was very involved in children’s ministry at Oakland Baptist Church and with the Superkids program. There were many young children touched by her abundant love and desire to bring them closer to God. Her home life was filled with the love of decorating and gardening, and the family will forever miss the aroma of her homemade rolls along with all of her other kitchen creations. Nana’s favorite bible verse was Joshua 24:15, “As for me and my house we will serve the Lord”. I’m sure He has said to her, “well done you good and faithful servant.” She is also preceded in death by her brother, Alvin Wilson Moody; and sister, Susie Moody Eure. She is survived by her loving husband of 36 years, Harvey Clinton Spain; son, Michael E. Andrews (Brandy) of Georgia, Keith A. Spain (Ruby) of Prince George; daughter, Kimberly S. Garcia of Richmond; grandchildren Sidney Mayer (Cory) of Henrico, Travis Spain (Courtney) of Charlottesville, Jacob Spain (Kait) of Dinwiddie, Willow Maeurer and Sophia Andrews; great-grandchildren, Ellie Mayer and Fynn Spain. The family will receive friends April 27, 2022, at J.T. Morriss & Son Hopewell Chapel from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Evelyn Ruzicka Oliver, 91, of North Dinwiddie, Virginia, known by many as “Bootsie,” passed away peacefully at home on April 26, 2022.

Born March 11, 1931, she was preceded in death by her parents, Joseph J. Ruzicka and Libby Volhein Ruzicka; her husband of 70 years, Bernard E. Oliver, Jr.; and her daughter, Jo Carol Oliver.

Evelyn retired after many years from Fort Lee, Virginia. She loved birds, especially bluebirds and hummingbirds and also loved flowers.

She is survived by her three daughters, Sharon Robinette of North Dinwiddie, Stacy Kelley (Mike) of Amelia Courthouse, and Stephanie Poole (Gary) of North Dinwiddie; five grandchildren, Misty Wright (Steven), Shannon Fuller (Derrick), Ryan Poole, Matthew Kelley, and Jenna Poole Jones; four great-grandchildren, Hunter Wright, Kaylee and Landon Jones, and Madison Fuller; three sisters, Mary Ann Ragsdale of North Dinwiddie, Blanche Andrews (Ronnie) of Colonial Heights, and Jean Williams of Sutherland.

Carolyn Hanchey Rawlings, 82, of Hopewell, passed away on Tuesday, April 26, 2022. She was the daughter of the late Earl Ephraim Hanchey and Fannie Ruby King Hanchey.

She is survived by her beloved husband, Ernest L. Rawlings, Jr.; son, Stacey L. Rawlings and his wife, Lois; grandson, Michael E. Rawlings and his wife, Shelby, and James D. Rawlings; and granddaughter, Sydney E. Rawlings; one brother-in-law, and several nieces and nephews.

Carolyn was employed with Defense Supply Center Richmond as a Supply Specialist, retiring after many years. She was a faithful member at City Point Restoration Church and enjoyed playing the organ there. She loved her family and will be dearly missed.

Eva Frances Browder Treaster, of Hopewell, Virginia, died April 27, 2022. She was born February 26, 1925 to the late John Thomas and Eva Browder of Petersburg, Virginia. Frances was preceded in death by her husband, Clair E. Treaster, Sr.; her son, Francis Keith Treaster; and daughter-in-law, Judy Price Treaster. She was a member of Wesley United Methodist Church of Hopewell and the Women of the Moose Chapter 1180, Hopewell. She loved to dance, cook family meals, and was a perfectionist when it came to sprucing up her home.

Frances was a very loving person who captured the hearts of her family, friends, and anyone in her company. She is survived by her son, Clair (Junie) E. Treaster, Jr.; numerous nieces and nephews; and a very devoted friend, Kay Bickings. A graveside service will take place at 2:00 p.m., Monday, May 2, 2022 at Sunset Memorial Park, Chester, Virginia. Daisy was born on January 30, 1931 in Dinwiddie, VA. Daisy was a warm-hearted, caring, friendly, spirited person. She was loved by her family, and she loved them dearly.

She enjoyed spending time with family and friends.

She retired from Central State Hospital after 37 years of service. She attended Oak Grove Baptist Church.

Daisy is survived by her only beloved son, Lawrence (Jean); a life-long friend, Emmett Wiggins; grandchildren, Sean D. Johnson (Dawn) and Tymicka J. Simms, six great grandchildren, Tkia Brown, Juan Brown, Sean Johnson, Jr,, Jazmyn Johnson, Taisia Meekins, and Jaylen Whitehead, two greatgreat grandchildren, Keitaisia Meekins and Zoey Johnson, sisters, Dorothy “Dot” Lewis and Rebecca Hudgins both of Petersburg VA; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.

Michael Paul Dender

November 13, 1976 - December 12, 2021 Michael “Mike” Paul Dender, beloved father and husband, 45, of Prince George, VA, passed from this earthly world on December 12, 2021 with his wife, Andria W. Dender, and daughter, Lillian “Lily” D. Dender, by his side. The family is deeply saddened by the loss of this exceptional man.

I want to share Mike’s story, as many weren’t even aware of the struggle he was facing on a daily basis.

Mike met his wife in 1998 and knew right away he had found his soulmate and his equal in this world. In 2001, Mike proposed and, by 2003, his love story was just beginning when he married the love of his life whom he loved and adored until his very last breath.

In 2005, Mike and Andria decided to start extending their family, and within days had a child on the way. Days after deciding to start a family, he was having numbness on the right side of his face, ignoring it all day, until his wife speaking with him after work, noticed a change in his speech and insisted he go the ER, where he was diagnosed with a brain tumor and immediately took action, as he was a man of action. Mike’s journey began with an awake craniotomy where a large portion of his tumor was able to be removed. He fought diligently to regain his speech, and motor functions of the right side to learn to speak, walk and use his hand and arm again. Within 2 months, Mike came back to us 100%, and was the same wonderful man with the same optimism and refusal to be beaten. Soon after surgery, Mike was given a prognosis of 4 years of quality life expectancy. Mike was the most determined individual; he never saw any obstacle he could not overcome. When Mike was given this prognosis he said, “No, I will show you year after year that I will not be defeated in 4 years. I will not allow it; I will be here to see my child grow and mature. I will live this life.” Mike welcomed his beautiful daughter, Lily, into this world in 2006 and found his heart bursting with love for this new life he had part in creating. Mike quit his job the week after his daughter was born, deciding he would not spend his life being stuck at a job that couldn’t provide an ounce of satisfaction that his daughter could. He had plans and dreams for her and would ensure that he showed her every single day what she meant to him and put her first in his determination to live. Mike threw elaborate birthday parties for his little goose and wanted to give her the world, and he did give her so many amazing experiences. He then decided to start his own company, consulting for other companies in successful business practices.

Mike, being the competent and savvy business person that he was, was needed for more than consulting. And when asked to come work with Bloom Brothers Furniture, he decided he would go to work with a man that he came to admire and eventually love, the late Lawrence Bloom.

Mike was saddened when in 2008 the company he had grown to love was closing, and he needed to find something else to do. Mike had met this man who was here from Canada on a work visa while at Bloom Brothers Furniture that impressed him very much and seemed to have so many complimenting attributes to Mike’s own. His business colleague at the time, to later become one of his very best friends and business partner, Travis Hamilton. Mike and Travis created an upholstery and fabric store, U-fab, opening in Cary Town in late 2008.

Too soon, things started to change for Mike during his semiannual scans. Now 2008 comes, and he needs to take action again. The doctors are telling him 9 months is their prognosis, saying he should stop and smell the roses. He didn’t immediately listen to the doctors’ treatment advice; as chances of this treatment working weren’t high, he was determined not to poison his body without exhausting all other avenues. Mike, using his intelligent mind, had been researching his disease all this time, and had decided he would first go the homeopathic route. Mike started multiple treatments, traveling to where he needed to go to get what he wanted. He wasn’t able to stop the growth, though it seemed to be slowing down. Eventually, the beginning of 2009 showed it was time to take some different actions, so chemotherapy was his next option. Mike started chemotherapy, which he took himself at home every day for 18 months. This was a very difficult time, as you can imagine poisoning yourself on a daily basis would be. During this time of treatments, he never missed a day of work at his new and rapidly growing successful business, U-fab. Mike knew this therapy was a long shot and wouldn’t be enough to save his life, so, true to form, he searched and tried many other homeopathic treatments. He was determined to cure his cancer. Scans throughout this time were showing chemotherapy was not working, and the next step was radiation which Mike was determined he would not do. You see, radiation does not cure cancer; in fact, it creates cancer. This Mike knew was a band-aid to give him months, and he was not accepting months. His daughter was 3 years old, and he was not finished with his journey.

He didn’t want a few more years; he wanted a lifetime. Mike had never stopped searching for his cure, and he threw himself into stopping this cancer from growing. We had many appointments that weren’t showing the progress he and his family were expecting. He was told during the end of the 18 months that his next appointment would be to discuss starting radiation, and Mike spent that time throwing everything at this disease. Determined, his wife remembers him saying every day without a doubt in his mind, “I got this. I will not need to do radiation babe, you’ll see.” Mike had a way of making you believe in him and his limitless accomplishments, as he had never been beaten yet. Mike and his wife arrived for the appointment to discuss radiation, and Dr. Asadullah Khan walked in with a huge smile on his face, and said, “What are you doing?” We knew right then that we had this thing, Mike was right as always, and we got this. The tumor had not only stopped growing but had shrunk. His wife was once again amazed by this man, he was a marvel.

Life returned to a more normal pace, where Mike made experiences for him and his family the goal. Mike and Travis decided in 2012 that Mike had completed his contribution to U-fab; it was time for him to move on and do something more. Mike opened his consulting business again and began to consult for Ashley Furniture. He made a huge impact on all the people he ever met, and this was no different; in his consulting, he was able to help others become successful.

Around 2016, his time ended with the local Ashley Furniture. He started traveling all over the country to help others become successful, having a huge impact on everyone that he encountered.

Mike soon realized that he needed his wife by his side; he could not be away for more than 3 days at a time before he was racing home. He decided he would still consult, as his help was needed by so many, but he would also start a new company with his wife to attempt to stay home and be more locally based.

Michael Paul Dender (continued) some more all around the country, loving each other every single day and loving the chance at life they were given. Mike continued to focus on his own treatment and was showing that he had stabilized the tumor growth. During this time, I stopped Mike from nothing he wanted, I put all my trust in him, and he thrived in the faith I had in him.

His loving oncologist Dr. Asadullah Khan left the Richmond area around 2015 and headed for Milwaukee, WI. Mike did not like the new oncologist that took over, so he stopped going for check-ins and just kept doing what had been working.

Around 2016, his wife started to see some changes, but as usual, Mike’s optimism rubbed off on her, so she just chalked it up and left it to his deference. Come the end of that year, she couldn’t ignore the signs any longer. She said, We are going to Milwaukee; we are going back to our doctor.” You see, this is the only man Mike would trust to care for him. This took some time to coordinate, but, come 2017, they drove 930 miles to see the man Mike wanted in charge of his care.

Scans were showing some growth; it was time to take action again.

Mike, again, was not ready for that dreaded standard of care that doesn’t cure cancer. He threw himself into finding another answer; he’d done it once before, so this time would be no different. Never having any doubt in his ability, he researched and read all while running 2 companies, building a home HIMSELF for his family, and with thousands of obstacles. As ever, he never stopped living life, never was down, complaining, or wondering why me. He knew he was the one to have this disease, and he would be the one to win this fight. Time went on, and life was lived with experiences that Lily and Andria will never forget. They did some things most thought were crazy and outrageous, such as taking their 13-year-old on a birthday trip that spanned multiple states, including white water rafting the New & Gauley River in Lansing, WV. Mike continued to focus on the many things he had going on, as well as his health. However, at this time, things were getting heavy, and keeping up with everything was becoming impossible. Mike and Andria had to sell their home and all of their possessions, but still they stayed positive. Mike and Andria turned every situation into a character-building exercise and just kept things going as well as possible.

Mike was building the subflooring of his home on the hottest August day in 2018, all alone and exhausted himself so much. The next morning, he had his very first seizure, which was a grand mal seizure. His wife woke up to find him this way, and this was a huge blow to their positive attitude and took them some a ton of effort to get through. With their current situation weighing heavily, things got very scary very quickly.

In September 2018, Mike and his wife drove that 930 miles again, this time, for another awake craniotomy so he could get the gene information for treatment. Mike showed up for surgery expecting the world-renowned surgeon, Dr. Amin Kassam, only to find he was not listed as the surgeon. With 40 people scrubbed in and ready to go, Mike walked out and said, “No, I cannot go into this surgery without my mind at ease. I do not know this other surgeon; I have not researched him, and I cannot do it.” He was so upset to cause such a scene of refusing this major surgery but felt that was what he had to do. Mike and Andria left the hospital that day, and his wife took him across the country to make more memories through experiences. And a week later they returned for this surgery.

After surgery, he had the gene information. We now knew what he and his family were fighting and felt this would give him a leg up to know how to fight. He still refused radiation all the way and never received radiation. And though the same chemotherapy was recommended, he refused. He fought this fight his way and made his own decisions, and he was able to make it 16 years with this terrible disease that was supposed to take him in 4. He was able to watch his daughter grow and mature and know that she would be okay, as she is an exceptional human just as he was.

Mike had just begun a new promising therapy on December 8, 2021 that he and his wife were so very hopeful would be their answer.

Mike just could not hold out any longer waiting for a cure. His brain tumor grew to the point of leaving no more room for growth and ultimately took his life on December 12, 2021.

Everyone that knew Mike will know how fortunate they were to know him and be influenced by such an optimistic person.

Michael is survived by his wife, Andria W. Dender; their daughter, Lillian “Lily” D. Dender; his father, Francis W. Dender; mother, Karin K. Newton; stepfather, Dennis Newton; brother, Frank Dender and wife, Christine; brother, Joe Mulholland and wife, Lisa; sister, Karyn Orth and husband, Jeff; and numerous nieces, nephews, uncles, aunts, and cousins.

Brother Warren Myrick peacefully transitioned from this earthly life on Friday, April 22, 2022, at sunset. Lead into heaven with Pastor Horace Jones and his family right at his side in prayer.

He was born on September 30, 1957, to the late Henry and Helen Myrick. He was educated in the Prince George Public School System. He graduated from Prince George High School, Class of 1976, where he played on the Royals Football Team with his cousin, Fletcher Myrick.

Warren was baptized on September 15, 1968, at Providence Baptist Church under the leadership of Rev. Jacob Turner, Jr. He was a faithful member of Cornerstone Ministries of Petersburg, VA, where he served on the Usher’s Ministry until his health declined.

Warren loved the Lord, his family and the Dallas Cowboys! There are so many fond memories of Warren’s fishing excursions and growing up on Route 1 with family and friends from the neighborhood.

Warren was employed by Brown and Root Construction Company for many years, and he was a licensed welder and electrician. He was an avid baseball card collector.

Warren was preceded in death by his older brother, Stanley, and loving aunt, Thelma Edwards. He leaves to cherish his memory: his devoted wife, Beverly Bridgeforth-Myrick; his children, Jonathon (Jessica) and Demitria Myrick, and Sharman Bridgeforth; precious grandchildren, Makhi, Madison, Malcolm and twins Ayanna and Quiana Northern; step-grandchildren, Gavin, Aaliyah, Olivia and August; two sisters, Sinthea Myrick Kelly (Stanley) and Darlise Myrick Byers (James); one aunt, Elizabeth Myrick; six sisters-inlaw, Janet Jones, Jeanette Franklin, Marjorie Walton, Mildred Woods, Jo’An Anderson and Michelle Lee-Barksdale; and one brother-in-law, John W. Lee. It’s with sadness, that the family of Robert D. Middleton, Sr., 87, announces that he fell asleep in death on Tuesday, April 26, 2022. He and his wife, Ruth celebrated 64 years of marriage on November 3, 2021.

Born on June 27, 1934, in St. Louis, Missouri. “Bob” enjoyed being with his family and had many hobbies such as golfing, wood carving, and painting. His real joy and purpose in life came from teaching the Bible to others helping them to know his God, Jehovah.

He will be lovingly remembered by his loyal wife, Ruth Middleton; his children, Robert Middleton, Jr. (Elsa), Ronald Middleton, Kevin Middleton (Chandra) as well as eight grandchildren and seven great grandchildren; and a host of other relatives and friends.

James T. Cheives, Sr.

June 23, 1951 - April 22, 2022 On Friday night, April 22, 2022 in God’s infinite wisdom, He called his child home. Mr. James Tyrone Cheives, Sr. was born June 23, 1951 to the late Edward Jasper Cheives, and India Raines Pearson. He was also preceded in death by a devoted step-father, Robert Pearson, his father-in- law, Otha Lee Stokes; siblings, Calvin Cheives and Hibernia Dyson, and her brother-in-law, Deacon Herbert Wilson.

He was a 1970 graduate of Peabody High School. Upon graduation from high school he started his military career. SGT James Cheives performed the duties as A/C Maintenance Administrative Clerk. He transferred from Marine Corps Reserve performing the duties of an Engineering Clerk. He retired from the United States Marine Corps Reserve. He became a civilian and worked at Brown & Williamson Tobacco, Inc. in Petersburg, VA. After Brown & Williamson, James worked for the Defense General Supply Center, retiring in 1998 after suffering a massive stroke. His love of working and being around people did not stop him as he worked volunteering as a greeter at Southside Regional Medical Center. James also enjoyed furthering his education as he took classes as often as he could continuing his education over the years at John Tyler Community College.

He joined Mount Olivet Baptist Church at an early age. He loved singing in the choir and working with the Share Ministry until he became ill. James was definitely a family man, from being the President of the PTA, to participating in the Jaycees, and the Teen Express Group. He always wanted his children to try new things, from being at valid lessons, taking his girls on their first flight, introducing his son to karate, trying football, to even helping the grandchildren with swimming lessons. He enjoyed family get-togethers, and being the host. Even when there were hard discussions, he was willing to listen and wanted to know what was happening with each of us. No matter if he had an opportunity to see us on a regular basis or if we were not able to be there, he loved us all in his own way.

Leaving to cherish his memories, his loyal wife of 33 years, Lucy; devoted son, James Cheives, Jr.; daughters, Tonia Alexander (Cleon) of Afton, VA and Sonya Saunders (Tony) of Clayton, NC; eight grandchildren, Alysia, Alexis, Justice, Justin, Anthony, India, Kyndal and Benjamin. James is also survived by his siblings, Robert Cheives (Virginia) and Judy Dabney (Deacon Gerard); mother-in-law, Mable Stokes; a sister-in-law Deacon Glory Wilson; two brothers-in-laws, Irby Stokes (Shirley) and Linwood Stokes (Denise); a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.

July 25, 1933 - April 26, 2022 (age 88) Kenneth Claiborne Jones, 88, of Colonial Heights, Virginia, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, April 26, 2022.

Born on July 25, 1933, in Petersburg, he is the son of the late James Landon Jones and Dora Guy Jones. He is also preceded in death by his brothers, Edward Guy Jones and James Melvin Jones, and a sister, Katherine Jones McMahon.

After graduating from Petersburg High School in 1951, Kenneth was called into the military service, and served his country in Korea. He is a retired engineer of 27 years at Philip Morris and was a member of the American Legion Post #284. He also enjoyed watching sports, and was a past member of the Colonial Heights Golf League. Kenneth was a very generous man, always willing to give a helping hand to his fellow man.

He is survived by his loving wife of 64 years, JoAn Walker Jones; his son, Keith L. Jones (Sherri); grandchildren, Heather Coleman (Hunter), Taylor Bruton (Jonnie), and Graham Tyler Jones; great-grandchildren, Hadley Kate Coleman, Hartleigh Bruton, and Adeline Bruton; niece, Karen Jones Chandler; and nephews, Terry McMahon and Dr. Michael McMahon.

O’Bryan O. Mapp

August 18, 1984 - April 23, 2022 On April 23, 2022, our hearts were deeply saddened by the loss of our beloved O’Bryan, whom God called home to rest, when He said, ‘NO MORE’ my child. Mr. O’Bryan Orlando Mapp, affectionately known as “OB” or “BOP”, was born on August 18, 1984, to Natalie Parham Mapp and Orlando Mapp. He was educated in the Chesterfield Public School System and graduated from Chesterfield Community High School in 2003.

At the age of six, he began playing baseball, but as time progressed, he developed a love for practically all sports. As an all-around athlete, he participated in baseball, football, basketball, wrestling, and boxing, and received many awards for his outstanding achievements. In August 2000, he went to Honolulu, Hawaii to compete in the People to People Sports Ambassadors for the United States.

In later years, he became interested in boxing and won the Golden Gloves twice for the State of Virginia. He was also a runner-up in the Regional Championship, and trained at the Ninth Division Boxing Gym, Richmond for several years.

O’Bryan accepted Christ at an early age and was baptized at Morning Star Baptist Church, Petersburg, under the leadership of the late Pastor Paul Johnson, where he served as a junior usher, a member of the youth choir, and participated in various plays and presentations. Later, he joined the Living Waters Ministry under the late Pastor Robert N. Bradley and became a member of the RIOT Team (Righteous Invasion of Truth). As a member of this youth group, each person was given an opportunity to preach every third Sunday (an assignment which O’Bryan enthusiastically embraced).

Those left to treasure and cherish his memory: his devoted mother, Natalie Parham Mapp of South Chesterfield, VA; his devoted maternal grandmother, Annie Parham of South Chesterfield, VA; one devoted maternal aunt, Kimberly Taylor (Danny) of Evans, GA; father, Orlando Mapp (Rena) of Williamsburg, VA; two sisters, Tiana Mapp and R’landa Mapp of Williamsburg, VA; one paternal aunt, Leavonna Roland of Georgia; four great aunts, Dr. Velma Green (Simeon) of Richmond, VA, Mary Carroll, Mildred Dodson and Rosa Jackson all of Petersburg, VA; three great uncles, Roy Parham of Hackensack, NJ and Leroy Jones of Missoula, MT, and Percy “Lo” Jones of Atlanta, GA; two adopted aunts, Minister Pauline Trisvan and Carol Johnson both of Petersburg, VA; one adopted uncle, Samuel Johnson (Darlene) of Merritt Island, FL; three devoted cousins, Elena “Penny” Jones of Petersburg, VA, John Carroll (Chevon) of Colonial Heights, VA, and Danerio Parham of Evans, GA; godmother, Irma Monroe of Dallas, TX; god-brother, Ahmad Monroe (Frances) of Dallas, TX; god-sister, Dejah Harrison (Maurice) of Hopewell, VA; and a host of other cousins and friends too numerous to name.

O’Bryan will truly be missed for his infectious smile and his wonderful sense of humor, but we know that in the days that lie ahead, we can find comfort and strength in the memories that we hold dear, and the words from one of his favorite scriptures which tells us to.

Trust in the Lord with all thine heart and lean not to thy own understanding. In all thy ways, acknowledge Him, and shall direct thy paths. Clara Foster Dyson

October 2, 1924 - April 22, 2022 (age 97) Evelyn Clara Foster Dyson, 97, of Chesterfield passed away on Friday, April 22, 2022. Born October 2, 1924, she was the daughter of the late Mary Jackson and William Johnson Foster, and was also preceded in death by her husband, James Elmer Dyson, Sr.; sisters, Ellen Tudor (Tom), Gladys Manhart (George), Hazel Pierce (Jimmy), Sylvia Terrell (Frank); and brothers, Charles (Margaret), William (Margaret ), Ralph (Lorraine), ,Floyd (Mary Ann), and Fred Foster. Clara, a lifelong resident of Chesterfield County, was born on a dairy farm at the end of Willis and Reyment Roads near Bellwood.

She was second youngest and one of 10 siblings. She attended the then Kingsland elementary school which included the first few grades with the higher elementary grades at Beulah elementary which she later attended. Of course she had to walk to school with her older brothers and could not walk home without her brothers. The first and second grades were taught in shifts with first grade being in the morning and second grade being in the afternoon. Waiting for her brothers to get out of class she attended second grade in the afternoon completing both grades at the same time. When she moved on to Beulah Elementary for the higher elementary she was elected and became the May Queen while there. She graduated from the old Chester High School in 1943. In the early to mid 40’s with the US being involved in the World War II, all the boys were engaged in some sort of service to the country and the dairy had to be relocated to a smaller property which was at the corner of Chalkley Road and Route 10. While there she was employed at the courthouse by the Rationing Board issuing stamps and certificates to the citizens to purchase items needed for food, work items, clothing, etc. She was introduced to her future husband by one of her brothers and they were married in December 1944. She lived in the same house from then till her death for some 78 years. She was a farm girl or farm wife her entire life. She was a member of the Woods United Methodist Church that entire time and at her death was the churches oldest member. During that time she was a Sunday school teacher for a ladies class in the church. She and her husband were long time members and supporters of the Gideon organization. She was also a long time member of the Matoaca Woman’s Club, an advocate for youth reading programs in the area and worked with many young people in the Matoaca area at the elementary school and through the Matoaca Library. She was seriously involved in the Reading is Fundamental (RIF) Adult learn to read program. She was seasonally employed at the local tobacco warehouses in Petersburg and other part time jobs. But her main job was being a mother to her 4 children and a farmer’s wife supporting the farm in a multitude of ways. She was widowed in September 1988. She was an avid quilter. She is survived by her children, James E. Dyson, Jr. (Judy recently deceased) of South Chesterfield, Janice Foster Dyson of Dinwiddie, June Dyson Brown (Bob) of Saint Simons Island, GA, Jo Anne Dyson Hudson (Bob) of Powhatan, Virginia. There are 9 grandchildren: Mary Elizabeth Maddra (deceased), Julee’ Maddra Walker (Virgil), Jennifer Carol Dyson-Lerch (Joe). James Andrew Dyson (Kelly), Jason Thomas Brown (Cassie), Joshua Daniel Brown (Beth), James Robert Brown (Lauren), Amanda Gray Miller (Chuck), and Robert Daniel Hudson (Rose). There are 18 great-grandchildren: Victoria Walker. Nicholas Walker, Mitchell Walker, Chloe Lerch, Emma Lerch, Avery Brown, Greyson Brown, Brady Dyson, Colby Dyson, Wyatt Dyson, Dylan Brown (deceased), Taylor Brown, Chase Brown, Skyler Dorr, Kayla Miller, Charlotte Miller, Henry Hudson and Thomas Hudson. Mary Ellen Ammons of Chester, a niece, which was like a sister to her, and several other nieces and nephews, several being deceased. A funeral service will be held at 2:00 PM on Wednesday April 27, 2022 at Woods United Methodist Church, 7200 Hickory Road, South Chesterfield, VA 23803. Family Visitation will be held at the church at 1:00 PM one hour prior to the service. Interment will follow the service in Woods United Methodist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends after the service at her son Jim Dyson’s home at 20236 Oak River Court. Mr. Albert J. Myrick

February 20, 1926 - April 23, 2022 God is his infinite wisdom called his son, Albert Junious Myrick to eternal rest on Saturday, April 23, 2022 at his residence. He was born in South Hampton County, VA., (Emporia) on February 20, 1926 to the late Junious Myrick and Mandiel Myrick.

Albert was a graduate of Carter G. Woodson School in Hopewell, VA. After, graduation he entered the United States Navy.

When he finished his term of service in the Navy he went to work for Continental Can Company, Hopewell, VA., retiring with thirty plus years of service. He was baptized at an early age. He later joined as a devoted member of the Arlington Road Church of Christ serving on the Trustee Board.

Albert was a wonderful father, grandfather and brother with a big heart and good sense of humor. His past time pleasures included, fishing, watching CNN, traveling and time spent with his family.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, Irene Myrick; two grandchildren, Jamal Spratley and Khadijah Myrick.

Mourning his loss and cherishing his fondest memories: children, Carolyn Thompson of Suitland, MD., Vanessa Myrick Rush (devoted) of Oxon Hill, MD., Regina Myrick Spratley of Washington, DC, Vincent Claiborne (devoted) of Hopewell, VA., Timothy Myrick (Debbye) of Blackstone, VA., Veronica Myrick (devoted) of Hopewell, VA, and Aretha Myrick Harrison (Norman) of Hopewell, VA; one brother, Thomas Myrick (devoted) of Hopewell, VA; one sister-in-law, (devoted) Joyce Ann Claiborne (Shad) of Hopewell, VA; thirteen grandchildren, ten great grandchildren, two devoted grandchildren, Jarrel and Dominique; host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends to include, Comer Family, Carol Brown and Family, Church of Christ Family, Ennis Family, and Dennis Edwards of Oxon Hill, MD. Twitter Sells to Elon Musk for $46 Billion Famous Users See Large Shifts in Followers STAFF REPORT LNNUSA.com

After a tense standoff between Twitter and Tesla founder Elon Musk, the board of Twitter has agreed to sell in full to the tech billionaire. After initially purchasing just over 9% of the company’s shares, Musk turned down the offer of a seat on Twitter’s board; instead, he offered to purchase the company in full to the tune of over $40 billion. The board of Twitter attempted to use the “poison pill” tactic to avoid accepting Musk’s offer out

of fiduciary duty, but the effort failed, and Musk became the sole owner of the tech giant for a total of $44 billion.

Musk has hinted that his reason for pursuing private ownership of Twitter was not as much financial as political; the SpaceX and Tesla CEO expressed that he was concerned about free speech being protected, referring to Twitter as today’s public square.

Now, blue checkmark users are tweeting out significant changes to their number of followers on the platform and social media analysts are tracking

the massive shifts. According to a report published by the Daily Wire, Governor Ron DeSantis of Florida has seen a jump of over 200,000

followers, while Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi saw a drop of 13,000.

In a similar vein, Donald Trump, Jr.’s followers increased by over 87,000, while outspoken left-leaning actor Mark Hamill of Luke Skywalker fame reported a drop of 8,000 followers in a matter of a few hours. While the trend is clear- right-leaning public figures gaining numbers while left-leaning figures lose numbers- Twitter has not offered an explanation as to why these dramatic and quick changes are happening.

Task Force Warns of Daily Aspirin Effects STAFF REPORT LNNUSA.com

The U.S. Preventive Service Task Force has released a warning to aspirin consumers aged 60 and up. On Tuesday, April 26th, the USPSTF released a new recommendation that contradicts advice that many doctors have given their patients in the past. They now recommend that those over the age of 60 not begin a daily low-dose aspirin regimen. For many years, doctors have recommended daily aspirin in an effort to prevent cardiovascular disease;

however, these updated guidelines recommend that only those who carry a more substantial risk of cardiovascular disease implement a daily aspirin regimen, and that they begin that regimen at a younger age- 40. In addition to these two age-related changes to their recommendations, the USPSTF also suggest that the use of daily aspirin be decided on an individual basis, rather than as a general recommendation to a wider age group.

In its recommendation, the task force contrasts the potential benefits of a

daily low-dose aspirin regimen with possible side effects. While aspirin does reduce cardiovascular events, the USPSTF also points out that it “increases the risk for gastrointestinal bleeding, intracranial bleeding, and hemorrhagic stroke”. Because the risk of all of the above- cardiovascular events, internal bleeding, and strokeincreases as a person ages, the task force also recommends that individuals stop daily aspirin use at the age of 75.

is a panel of volunteer experts who specialize in disease prevention and evidence-based medicine. The task force was created in 1984 and uses peer-reviewed evidence to make recommendations about preventative medical efforts and medicines in order to assist doctors in the care of their patients.

Disney Stripped of Special Status in Florida STAFF REPORT LNNUSA.com

On Friday, April 22nd, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis finalized a bill from the Florida legislature that would remove special privileges from Disney in the state. The legislation dismantles tax privileges for special districts in Florida, one of which is the Reedy Creek Improvement District, which encompasses Disney World.

Prior to the elimination of the special districts, Disney has been able to operate its district as its own local government since 1967, a benefit that has saved the company millions of dollars every year, according to the Wall Street Journal.

The bill to strip away that special status was first introduced in the Florida Senate where it passed before being voted on and approved by the

Florida House of Representatives on Thursday, April 21st.

This move comes after Disney, in response to heavy criticism and activism by some of its employees, took a stance against Florida’s Parental Rights in Education bill that would restrict public school staff in Florida from teaching children about sexual orientation and gender identity from kindergarten through third grade.
