Eggs and Kegs Roll into Old Towne PETERSBURG

PETERSBURG – Old Towne Petersburg’s reputation as a gathering place for food and entertainment took a giant step to returning to its preCOVID glory on Saturday, April 16th. With the deconstruction of the Old Towne Square in mid-2021, the popular destination location saw a sharp decline in traffic according to local business owners.

Fast-forward to Easter weekend 2022 and a group of Old Towne business people have found a way to recreate the popularity of the defunct Square – using eggs and kegs.

The event labeled as “Eggs and Kegs” combined an Easter celebration with a festival-like atmosphere. Appomattox Iron Works on Old Street set the stage for the six-hour event featuring four bands: Tiara & Andres, Gold Station Melody, Campbell’s Bridge, and Bass Thumb the Band.

Those in attendance were treated to a variety of music and local culinary delights

offered by businesses like Haley’s Honey Meadery, Ta Bon Fry, Comeback Burgers, and Beaunuts Donuts along with a selection of retail options.

While entertainment was a key component to the event, another factor truly drove the efforts of the day.

What was the price for entry to the event? A minimum of a single can of food. In an effort to raise awareness and supplies for the Hope Center, the donation of canned food items served as the ticket price.

The event was sponsored by Studio 7, Dirty Dan’s Hippie Haven, Old Towne Builders, and Main Street Petersburg.

Local business owners in the community expect to continue to hold these community events this summer season.

Key event organizers expressed their excitement about the Easter weekend mini festival. Mike Wilson from Old Towne Builders said, “This is huge. We are getting people back out, drawing businesses and the community together in a great

place like Old Towne.”

Denise Tipton of Studio 7 said the group is working though the logistics but to expect more to come. “We’re going to figure out how this is going to work today and make plans for future events.”

Those plans will be available through flyers, social media, and at Old Towne business locations like Studio 7.

For now it looks like Old Towne Petersburg is indeed alive and well, and working to resurrect a local gathering place once again.

Prince George Intersection to be Redesigned PRINCE GEORGE

PRINCE GEORGE- One intersection in Prince George County is scheduled to receive a makeover this year.

The angled intersection where Bull Hill Road crosses Courthouse Road will be reconstructed into a “dog bone” roundabout, an elongated version of a traditional circular roundabout.

On Tuesday, April 19th, VDOT held an information session at Walton Elementary School where staff members were on site to provide details on the new style of roundabout and answer any questions that attendees had.

that they will soon be driving to maneuver the new intersection on a giant aerial view map of the roundabout laid out on the school’s cafeteria floor.

VDOT staff members explained that a high number of vehicle crashes at the Courthouse-Bull Hill intersection qualified it to be listed for redesign. A study of the traffic in the intersection was conducted in 2016.

The unique “dog bone” roundabout design, nicknamed so because it has rounded ends and a thinner middle, will allow traffic to flow through the intersection more easily than the current skewed intersection- without installing traffic signals.

INTERSECTION FROM PAGE 3 The flow of traffic at a higher speed along Courthouse currently can make crossing over Courthouse on Bull Hill or turning from Bull Hill onto Courthouse difficult and even dangerous. The dog bone roundabout is designed to solve those problems while simultaneously minimizing the amount of surrounding property impacted by the installation. VDOT confirmed that the necessary easements have been secured where the project will touch nearby privately-owned property.

Though the dog bone roundabout may be a new intersection design for many drivers, it can be navigated the same way as other circular roundabouts in the area.

Traffic entering the roundabout yields to the traffic already in the roundabout, which has the right of way.

All traffic flows counterclockwise through the intersection.

Bikers and pedestrians will be able to navigate the intersection, along with larger trucks and vehicles towing trailers. The design includes a non-landscaped apron on each end that allows larger vehicles to pass through the tighter turns of the roundabout by riding up on the apron if needed.

Overall, the project is projected to cost $5.7 million.

Residents and commuters can expect the project to begin in the fall of this year and for the work to take about a year to complete. There will be a detour in place during Phases II and III of the construction.

PETERSBURG- Petersburg City Public Schools have officially accepted the resignation of School Superintendent Dr. Maria Pitre Martin. Pitre Martin is leaving Petersburg to accept a job in the North Carolina Department of Public Education.

The Petersburg School Board accepted her resignation at its Wednesday, April 20th meeting, where it also appointed Dr. Julius Hamlin as acting school superintendent effective June 1, 2022.

Hamlin was hired into the Petersburg school administration in early Fall of 2021 and has served as Deputy School Superintendent since that time.

Hopewell Student Wins Girls Wrestling Tournament State Championship HOPEWELL

HOPEWELL— Aravely Avila-Jimenez was recently recognized by Hopewell City Council and presented an award for her victory in the 2022 Virginia Girls Wrestling Championship tournament.

About her victory, Avila-Jimenez said, “It felt amazing.” When asked what drew her to the sport of wrestling, the champion explained that her former football coach in California suggested it.

“It was not even my thing,” said Avila-Jimenez.

“He told me that it would help me with football.”

She added that she runs track and plays soccer at Hopewell High School as well, and enjoys sports in general because they keep her active.

Her advice to other athletes is perseverance. “Keep working hard. You never know what goals you will achieve,” she said.

Hopewell High School coach Rich Halas explained that while there is not a separate wrestling division

for girls in the Commonwealth (currently they wrestle boys in their weight class), the Virginia High School League officially sanctions tournaments such as the one in which Avila-Jimenez attained her victory.

“Right now, the VHSL has sanctioned a pilot program for women’s wrestling in Virginia of five women’s wrestling tournaments each season including the women’s state championship at the end of the season,” said Halas.

Colonial Heights Moves Forward with Westover Intersection Project

City Takes Steps to Secure Key Private Property COLONIAL HEIGHTS

COLONIAL HEIGHTS- The city of Colonial Heights has filed certificates of take regarding three properties in an effort to complete the expansion of the intersection of Westover and Boulevard.

Todd Flippen, the Director of Public Works explained the city’s position in the acquisition of property.

“Really, the purpose of our project and any of our projects is to minimize the effect that’s on private property.

We had our engineers look at it and see where they could minimize the project as much as possible, and we found with achieving the scope of the project that roughly eight to twelve feet of width at the

front of each of these properties would need to be taken.”

The council had voted on a resolution last month empowering the city attorney to take necessary action to acquire the property needed.

City Attorney Chip Fisher reported at the latest city council meeting that three of the impacted property owners had refused to settle with the city, so certificates of take had been filed in the circuit court.

“The next major step will actually be filing petitions of condemnation to actually have the circuit court rule on the fair market value of what the city has taken,” Fisher explained.

Hopewell Property Sold after Years of Ownership Confusion HOPEWELL

HOPEWELL— Hopewell City Council recently approved the sale of a 2,5002,700 open square foot property located on E. Poythress street to the Hopewell Redevelopment Housing Authority (HRHA). The property is located adjacent to the HRHA office, and the HRHA had assumed the piece of land was part of its

own parcel for years.

At the Tuesday, April 19th council meeting, Department of Development Director Tevya Griffin explained that the HRHA had been improving and maintaining that area for some time. “They have been mowing the lawn for decades,” said Griffin.

“Their assumption was that they owned the land,” explained the development director, adding that the discovery that the HRHA did

not own the property was made after a property records review.

Griffin stated that this issue had been brought to council the previous year, and that the recommendation was that the HRHA provide the city compensation for the land in the amount of $5,000, to which the HRHA agreed.

With no one speaking for or against the sale, the public hearing portion was opened and closed, and council pro-

ceeded with a vote without further discussion.

The motion for the sale of the property passed 5-1, with Mayor Patience Bennett absent and Vice Mayor Johnny Partin voting against the sale.

After the vote, in an emailed community update, Partin stated, “I voted against this motion, because I believe we should have sold it for $15,000 and have put stipulations on what they could do with the property.”

The amount of available sunlight at your planting location will determine which tree species will be successful. Most trees require full sunlight for proper growth and flowering. Some do well in (or even prefer) partial or light shade, but few perform well in dense shade.

Prepare Your Planting Site Properly preparing your planting site is one of the best things you can do to get your tree off to a strong start. Before you plant, make sure your tree is thoroughly hydrated by watering the container or root ball several hours before proceeding.

Once the tree is positioned, replace the soil while firmly but gently tamping the original soil around the base of the root ball to stabilize it.

Create a water-holding basin

around the tree by building up a ring of soil and water to settle roots. Spread protective mulch 2-4 inches deep in a 3-foot diameter around the base of the tree, but not touching the trunk.

BOSTON- On Friday, April 15th, a four woman team broke the world record for the women’s distance medley relay, running the race in 10:33.85. According to ESPN, Heather MacLean, Elle Purrier St Pierre, Roisin Willis, and Kendall Ellis together broke the world record for the DMR; the previous world record was 10:39.91 for indoor and 10:36.50 for outdoor.

The race was held as part of the grand opening of The Track at New Balance in Boston, a multi-purpose sports complex complete with a sports research lab.

Previously, MacLean ran in the Tokyo Olympics, and Ellis has won two Olympic medals.

Purrier St. Pierre currently holds the US record for the mile and two mile. Willis was not originally slated to run Friday’s race, but New Balance announced earlier in

Cavs Perfect through Ten PETERSBURG

PETERSBURG – Ten up, ten down. The Petersburg Cavaliers have faced down every challenge in the 2022 season.

From ugly wins to dominating performances, the 2022 squad has delivered the best start in franchise history – perfection, 10 and 0.

While the Saturday, April 16th game against the undermanned traveling North Carolina Coyotes appeared relatively under control for the Cavs, a breakdown in their focus and pinpoint shooting beyond the arc from the Coyotes turned a third period twenty-nine-point Cavs lead into a fourth period single-digit war of attrition.

As the Cavs saw a seemingly insurmountable lead vanish, the Coyotes were struggling to battle a second opponent on the court – fatigue. With a stable of only three players on the bench to draw from and a daunting Cavaliers fourth period pressure defense, the steam was running out for the Coyotes.

North Carolina’s Evans rained down nine threes in the game with five coming in the fourth period. And the

Coyotes outscored the Cavaliers 30 to 20 in the final period. But the constant defensive pressure and a Cavs team that settled back into team ball to finish the match-up proved too much to overcome.

The game remained relatively competitive through two periods as the Coyotes stayed within ten points at the half, 56-46. But as the third opened, Walter Williams nailed back-to-back threes and Elijah Moore followed with another to launch a 15-6 Cavs run. Midway through the period, the Cavs were up 27 points eventually finishing the third quarter up by twenty points.

After missing last week’s game, Williams returned to the line-up dropping 24 points, Moore delivered one of three Cavaliers’ double-doubles with 21 points and 13 rebounds, joined by Mealy’s monstrous game and Melvin Gregory who dropped 24 points and 13 rebounds.

The 119-105 victory secured Petersburg the opening round playoffs in the ‘Burg and first place in the brackets for the Mid-South Conference.

Four more regular season road games remain against teams hungry to avenge early season losses to the Cavs.

The playoffs kick off June 4th.

For now the Cavaliers control their destiny on their quest to bring their first ECBL Championship home to Petersburg.

WASHINGTON, D.C.- A little piece of entertainment at a Washington Nationals baseball game Wednesday evening prompted chaos nearby at the U.S. Capitol.

Google to Partner with VA Schools STAFF REPORT LNNUSA.com

On Tuesday, April 19th, Governor Glenn Youngkin announced a new partnership with Google. The tech company has pledged $300 million dollars of investment in Virginia that they project to have an $8.8 billion dollar overall economic impact. Google also promised a $250,000 grant to CodeVA to develop a network of computer science lab schools throughout the Commonwealth. The company will also partner with the Virginia Community College System to develop a set of professional certificates in the field of computer science that will help prepare students for the workforce

Gas Tax Holiday Proposal Moves to House Appropriations Committee STAFF REPORT LNNUSA.com

Governor Youngkin’s gas tax holiday proposal is making its way through the Virginia House of Delegates. On Tuesday, April 19th, the House Finance Committee voted to move the proposal to the House Appropriations Committee and one step closer to a vote on the House floor.

The tax holiday would be in effect in the months of May, June, and July, with the gas tax phased back in beginning in August. The Commonwealth’s transportation fund currently has a surplus of over one billion dollars. To aid Virginians struggling with the rising cost of fuel, Governor Youngkin has proposed that the tax be suspended this summer, a move that would use approximately $440 million of that surplus.

Nearby states have implemented gas tax holidays, but the proposal has faced opposition from Democrats in the Virginia Senate. Tuesday’s vote moved the tax holiday forward a small step, but it remains to be seen whether an agreement can be reached before May when the proposal is written to go into effect.

POLICE SEEK ROBBERY SUSPECT CHESTERFIELD COUNTY POLICE DEPARTMENT PRESS RELEASE

CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, VA – Police are searching for a suspect who robbed the Amoco, located at 11531 Midlothian Turnpike at about 6:10 P.M. today. No one was injured during the incident.

Police said a suspect entered the business, passed a

note, and demanded money from the store employee.

The suspect then went behind the counter and retrieved an undisclosed amount of money from the register. The suspect then fled the store on foot.

The suspect is described as a black male with a thin build, approximately 20 25 years of age. The suspect was wearing grey pants, a

short sleeve black shirt with an Anime character on the front, and a black ski mask.

Walmart Grand Larceny and Assault: 1972 | April 18, 2022

This week, the Chesterfield County/Colonial Heights Crime Solvers program needs your help to solve a grand larceny.

On March 19, 2022, at 5:21 p.m., two suspects, one male and one female, entered the Colonial Heights Walmart at 671 Southpark Blvd. and concealed several items, including computers and electronics, valued at over $1,300. As the suspects were exiting the store, the Loss Prevention Officer attempted to stop them, but was pepper sprayed by the female suspect. EDITORIAL

Who Are You? Today’s editorial is the third in a series of editorials discussing the issues facing Petersburg and why Petersburg must look into the mirror and acknowledge that it is responsible for many of its own problems.

To read part one, “A City in a Chokehold”, and part two, “Into the Mirror”, see the last two editions of the LNN Insider.

Last week, we jumped into the mirror, exploring the statistical data surrounding voter participation in Petersburg.

This week, we dive down the rabbit hole and ask Petersburg, who are you?

Who is Petersburg? Who does Petersburg want to be? The answer is unclear.

Most cities have areas within them that differ greatly. There are usually business districts and residential areas, urban downtowns and suburban outskirts, wealthier neighborhoods and poorer neighborhoods. Petersburg certainly has

all of these things. Those types of differences don’t necessarily equate to lack of identity; a city or town can have an idea of who it is and strive for a common vision while allowing for differences within itself.

Having an identity doesn’t necessarily mean having uniformity. Uniformity is boring, and nobody wants to work, live, or play in a boring city.

But does Petersburg want to be a city that people want to live, work, and play in? That’s unclear, but it doesn’t appear so.

Elected officials and the staff they hire have struggled to resolve basic functions of the city that residents and business owners must deal with in their daily lives; whether it be repeated utility billing errors and tax miscalculations or simply unreturned phone calls from city offices, no potential resident or business owner wants to move into a city where they will be forced to deal with

basic administrative issues that other localities make simple.

As far as having fun, you only need to look downtown to see Petersburg’s stance on that.

Where there was once a thriving open-air dining and entertainment area, there is now just a road. The Old Towne Square could have become a permanent fixture to draw business downtown and create an inviting community atmosphere for people to relax and dine in Petersburg; indeed, the original plan for the Square included steps to beautify it and make it permanent. But alas, the Square is no more, thanks to city officials.

Right alongside elected officials and city staff, current citizens of Petersburg have an impact on making it a place to live, work, and play. But residents are all too often responsible for much of the crime that occurs in the city.

Very few people choose to live somewhere that is downright

dangerous, and that is what Petersburg has become- dangerous. The city may have had a reputation as dangerous for decades, but gunfire and shootings have become commonplace in just about every part of Petersburg. No sense of community or identity will grow in a place where everyone is afraid to leave their homes; yet, some residents of the city choose to make Petersburg a place of high crime while others choose to ignore the problem or accept it as the status quo. There are residents who work to improve the city’s identity and reputation, but they are too few to face such a daunting task.

Until Petersburg can agree on who it wants to be and then take the necessary steps to reach that vision, others will give it an identity - a place to avoid. Who are you, Petersburg?

The Inflation Problem Goes Much Deeper Than Biden CLINT SIEGNER MONEY METALS NEWS SERVICE

Joe Biden has committed more than his share of mistakes and missteps during the first 15 months of his administration. Some, including a new federal spending spree combined with decisions to limit U.S. oil production and to weaponize the U.S. dollar against Russia, are contributing to the surge in price inflation.

These rising prices are great political fodder for his opponents who want to see Democrats get pounded in this year’s midterm elections.

Biden and his handlers certainly deserve some blame.

However, today’s price inflation has more to do with the policies rammed through during Biden’s decades serving in the US Senate, than his first year as President.

There are others who cannot be allowed to avoid scrutiny and blame. Biden

is just one of hundreds of feckless and irresponsible politicians who spent the last 50 years undermining the U.S. currency.

Decades of unrestrained federal borrowing and spending and policies which hollowed out the U.S. economy have left the Federal Reserve Note vulnerable to rapid depreciation.

While Congress is certainly a key player, the Federal Reserve is the organization most responsible for the predicament we are in today. The banking cartel has been the great enabler for the reckless Congress, acting as the buyer of last resort for vast quantities of Treasury debt.

Fed officials must also be held accountable for engineering an over-financialized US economy which is hopelessly addicted to

easy money and ultra-low interest rates. The Fed is the “manufacturing powerhouse” which made dollars into the United States’ leading export.

Yes, decades of reckless monetary policy have consequences.

The Fed is now in an impossible predicament.

Central bankers there have one tool, and it isn’t going to work.

They can stimulate and throw gasoline on the raging inflation bonfire, or they can tighten and crush the stock market and wreck the federal budget.

The chickens are coming home to roost now.

It is vital for Americans to understand that these central planners played the leading role in the end of the dollar’s hegemony. If the Fed dodges blame, offi-

cials there will be trotting out the next disaster for Americans – a central bank digital currency.

Sure, it is perfectly valid to blame Biden for rising prices of late. He is as responsible as anyone.

But the socialists and globalists in the Mariner Eccles building should be held accountable as well. Unfortunately, very few Republicans or Democrats are interested in fundamentally reforming the Fed. Herb Crusted Bone-In Leg of Lamb PREP TIME: 3 HOURS COOK TIME: ABOUT 3 HOURS (DEPENDING ON SIZE AND DONENESS) SERVINGS: 15

Ingredients • 1 Atkins Ranch bone-in leg of lamb (about 8 pounds) • 1/4 cup olive oil • 8 cloves garlic, finely minced • 2 tablespoons Dijon mustard • 2 tablespoons kosher salt • 1/4 cup white wine Herb Crust: • 2 large egg whites • 2 tablespoons minced rosemary leaves • 2 tablespoons minced thyme leaves • 2 tablespoons ground peppercorns • 1 tablespoon kosher salt • fresh mint sauce, for serving

INSTRUCTIONS 1. About 2 hours before preparing, remove leg of lamb from fridge to ensure even cooking. Remove gland to prevent gaminess during cooking.

2. Preheat oven to 325 F on convection setting. Score skin of both sides of leg of lamb.

3. In bowl, whisk olive oil, garlic, Dijon mustard, salt and white wine. Brush onto both sides of lamb, pressing into scored crevices.

4. Place leg in roasting pan on roasting rack. Insert cooking probe into thickest part of meat, not touching bone. Cook about 1 hour

and 20 minutes, or until internal temperature reaches 95 F. 5. Reduce oven temperature to 300 F and cook to desired doneness.

For medium-rare doneness, remove lamb once probe reaches 125 F. 6. To make herb curst: In bowl, whisk egg whites until evenly foamy with tiny bubbles. Brush onto both sides of lamb.

7. In separate small bowl, mix rosemary, thyme, peppercorns and salt. Press herb crust mixture onto areas brushed with egg whites.

Place back in pan and cook about 5-7 minutes until crust is formed and browned. Remove from oven and rest 30 minutes.

8. Carve lamb, arrange on platter and serve with fresh mint sauce.

Jeannie Myers Buhrman, 65, of Colonial Heights passed away on Wednesday, April 20, 2022. Born February 28, 1957, she was the daughter of the late Yvonne Jones and Edward John Myers, Sr., and was also preceded in death by her son, Andrew Nicholas Buhrman; brother, Edward John Myers, Jr.; and nephew, Justin Edward Myers.

She was known for her amazing work ethic, starting at her family’s business, Short Stop Grocery, for about 14 years, then moving to Ukrops, where she worked for 12 years.

After her time with Ukrops, she worked for Suntrust Bank for nine years before finally retiring.

A loving and devoted mother, nanny, sister and cat mom, the love she had for her family was unmeasurable. Coming in at a close second was I Love Lucy, The Beatles and ABC soap operas.

She is survived by her son, Christopher Michael Buhrman and wife, Abbey; granddaughter, Aubrey Ann Buhrman; sister-inlaw, Patricia B. Myers; niece, Lauren Myers Stiglich; cat-child, Piper; other extended family members and many friends. The family would like to extend their deepest appreciation to Mrs. Jeannie’s aides, Stephanie Webster, Krysten Callahan and Jordan Tingley, as well as everyone involved at Consumer Direct.

A funeral service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Tuesday, April 26, 2022 at the Colonial Heights Chapel of E. Alvin Small Funeral Homes and Crematory, 2033 Boulevard.

Otis “Tick” Lee Wilson, 78, of North Dinwiddie passed away Wednesday, April 20, 2022. Born on October 16, 1943, in Chesterfield Virginia, to the late Weldon “Slim” and Hazel Wilson and is also preceded in death by his brothers, James Wilson and Charles Wilson. Otis served in the United States Navy from 1960 to 1964. He was a lifelong truck driver for Food Lion where he was known as “Flip”. During his free time Otis enjoyed the outdoors especially fishing and even though he was a retired truck driver he loved driving around. June 21, 1959 - April 19, 2022 Pamelia (Pam) Sue Landon Henry, 62, peacefully departed this life surrounded by family on April 19, 2022. Pam was born at Andrew’s Airforce Base, Maryland in June of 1959. Her father was career army, so she grew up in many different locations throughout the world. Her most vivid memory of returning from Germany, at five years old, was that she cried because there was no “good” bread here. Pam graduated from Prince George High School where she introduced her brother to his future wife. She completed her Bachelor’s degree at Virginia State University.

After working in retail management, Pam pursued a career in social services. She worked with people she loved, both colleagues and clients, in Petersburg, Chesterfield, and Hopewell. Of all of the things Pam has done, her favorite life activities were being a wife, mother and Nana. She married the love of her life, David, in Prince George, Virginia on June 6, 1992. They raised four children and were raising their oldest grandson, Jason. Being a Nana to Jason, and then to her two granddaughters, was pure joy for Pam. She never tired of telling how smart they all are, how special they are, what a great artist Jason is, and what bundles of energy and happiness Isabella and Savannah are. It is hard to do justice with words to describe such a life. Pam was a dynamic person who enthusiastically took on every challenge she faced. She fiercely loved and lived life with a zest that endeared her to almost everyone who met her.

Pam was preceded in death by her father, Wayne Landon, and mother, Eva Landon. She leaves to cherish her memory the love of her life, husband, David Henry, Sr.: children, Jeremy Wayne Reiter, Jessica Reiter, David Henry, Jr. (Krista), and Angela Henry; much loved grandchildren, Jason White, Isabella Henry, and Savannah Henry; brothers, Fred Landon, Jr. (Connie), and Jimmy Henry (Emily); in addition to many loving nieces and nephews.

A Celebration of Life is planned on Saturday, April 30, 2022. A visitation will be held at 3:00 p.m. at First Baptist Church, Hopewell, Va., followed by a service at 4:00 p.m. The family invites you to join us to celebrate a life lived with love. February 25, 1946 - April 19, 2022 Eraina “Fay” Bogan, 76, of Hopewell, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, April 19, 2022.

She was preceded in death by her mother, Glenna Fay Grass Strickland; father, George David Strickland (Betty); sister, Trudy Brown; and canine companion, Conway.

Fay is survived by her children, Glenna Jarratt (Shawn) and Larry Bogan (Shannon); grandchildren, Michelle (Nick), Stephanie (Louis), Kaitlin, Bran (Twan), Zachary, Brianna, McKenna, Shawn Jr., Lee, Brooklynn, Aiden, Kegan, Nolan, and Maddox; sister, Sue Garrett (Tom); brothers, John Strickland and Rick Strickland; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Fay enjoyed crafting, crocheting, and reading in her spare time. What she valued most in life was her family. She would proudly boast about her children and grandchildren to anyone and everyone. Her grandchildren were her “pride and joy.” She was a wonderful combination of warmth, kindness, laughter, and love. She will live on in the hearts of the loved ones she left behind and will be greatly missed.

August 30, 1951 - April 19, 2022 William “Bill” H. Dalton, 70, of Colonial Heights, VA, went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, April 19, 2022. Born in Petersburg, VA and raised in Blackstone, he was the son of the late Harley and Ruthella Dalton; and was also preceded in death by one brother, Stephen Dalton.

Bill was a 1971 graduate of Nottoway High School and has worked most of his life in retail management. He had been employed with Amazon since 2015 as a Training Ambassador. He was a dedicated and active member of Swift Creek Baptist Church, where he sang in the choir and also sang many songs at Sunday morning services.

He was selfless to his last breath and was always putting others before himself, especially his wife and children. Bill is survived by his loving wife of 42 years, Pamela Greer Dalton; two daughters, Devon Westmoreland (Brandon) and Lindsay Cliborne (Matthew); his grandchildren, Braeden Westmoreland, Clayton Cliborne, Cole Westmoreland, Emersyn Cliborne and Kipton Cliborne; two brothers, Kenneth Dalton (Sheri) and Douglas Dalton; sister-in-law, Cindy Miller (Paul); and numerous nieces and nephews. Robert was preceded in death by his parents, Robert E. Rightmyer and Betty Sivell Rightmyer; and his loving wife of over 42 years, Christine A. Rightmyer. He is survived by his daughter, Tracey Duncan; grandchildren, Ashley Parrish, Brandon Duncan, and Hunter Duncan; great-grandson, Robert Parrish, Jr.; and his brother, Joe Rightmyer and wife, Cheri. Robert was a U.S. Army veteran serving with distinction during the Vietnam War. He retired from active duty after more than 30 years as a Lt. Colonel. He was an active member of Spirit Life Worship Center in Prince George.

Robert was a member of multiple civic and community groups including Chesterfield Lion’s Club, Fort Lee Theater Company, American Legion Post 2 in Petersburg, the 40/8 Club, and the Richmond Stamp Club.

Willard Jackson Wootten, 91 of N. Prince George passed away peacefully on Monday, April 18, 2022. He was born in Appomattox, Va. on August 17, 1930. His family moved to Dinwiddie Va. where they lived for a number of years. He is predeceased by his parents, Ellis P. Wootten and Carrie J. Wootten; wife, of 40 years, Alice Wootten; brothers, Bernard, Marvin, and Hunter; sisters, Sallie and Thelma; and step-son, Bruce Brockwell. He is survived by his twin brother, Wilson Wooten (Nancy); step-daughter, Judy Brockwell (Russell); step-son, Lawrence Brockwell, Jr. (Kathy); step-granddaughter, Courtney Brockwell; daughter, Robin Stoner; several nieces and nephews; and his three cats he raised from kittens. Willard was a painter who worked for several outfits and retired from Fort Lee. He still painted for anyone that needed a job done with windows being his specialty. He enjoyed working in his garden along with his wife and raised lots of vegetables which he shared with family and friends.

He also enjoyed playing music. He could play the guitar, harmonica, mandolin and fiddle.

He played and sang with two gospel groups, going to many nursing homes, churches and events, for many years. He also enjoyed wood working. He refinished furniture, tables, and a church pew. He built and painted many wind ornaments for the yard. He loved to see wood brought back to its natural state. He will be missed by his family his friends, and his Sycamore United Methodist Church family, of which he was a devoted member and choir member. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Sycamore UMC, 9710 Old Stage Rd, Prince George, Va. 23875. A Celebration of Life service will be held Monday, May 2, 2022 at 11 AM at Sycamore UMC. The family will receive friends for a visitation one hour prior to the service at the church. William “Bill” Henry Funk, IV entered his eternal home to be with his earthly father, William Henry Funk, III. on April 18, 2022. He is survived by his mother, Judith C. Funk, of Richmond, VA. William was born in Richmond, VA on April 3, 1954. He attended St. Joseph Catholic School in Petersburg, VA, Sacred Heart Catholic School in Danville, VA, and graduated from George Washington High School. He then attended Virginia Tech. William was an avid golfer. He was an Assistant Pro at James River Country Club, Chairman of the Peninsula section of the Virginia State Golf Association, and he and his partner won the Swinging Bridge Tournament in Bel Air. William was co-owner of Hermitage Mortgage until retirement.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 12:00 P.M. on Wednesday, April 27, 2022 at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 151 W. Washington St. Petersburg, VA. June 13, 1973 - April 18, 2022 Sherrod Godwin Taylor received his calling to go home with the Lord on Monday, April 18, 2022. He was born in Petersburg, VA, on July 13, 1973. He was a loving family man and a great and loyal friend to all that knew him. Sherrod would greet everyone with a sincere smile.

Sherrod was also a standout football and basketball player in high school and college where he played among some of the best athletes in the country during his collegiate years. He was also a devoted Dallas Cowboy fan.

He loved his family dearly and he was a loving husband, father, son, brother, nephew, uncle, and cousin to all his family.

Debra Bradley Smith, 64, of Church Road, Virginia passed away on Saturday, April 16, 2022. Born April 24, 1957, she was the daughter of Alton Earl Bradley and the late Carol Kelley Bradley. She was a longtime member of Smyrna Baptist Church.

Debra enjoyed working as a substitute teacher at Northview Elementary School while her children attended. She was the president of the PTA and cherished her time as a stayat-home mom until 2006, when she started working for Bellwood Federal Credit Union.

She enjoyed reading and loved putting together family gatherings, where she always served her world-famous coleslaw. While her husband was serving in the United States Navy, Debra served as an ombudsman, which is an information link between command leadership and command families for the U.S.S. Enterprise.

She is survived by her loving and devoted husband of 30 years, Steven Randolph Smith; children, Randy Smith and Morgan Wolfe and husband, Christopher; cherished grandchild on the way; father, Alton Earl Bradley; brother, Al Bradley Jr. and wife, Kim; two sisters, Linda Bradley and Jennifer Robinson and husband, Thomas; aunt and good friend, Penny Adams; very good friend, Diana Shoemaker and numerous nieces, nephews, extended family members and many friends.

Richard Alan Clark, 67, of Matoaca, Virginia went to be with the Lord, April 15, 2022, after a courageous 10-year battle with Cancer. He was born December 21, 1954, to the late Lorenza Dow and Mildred Bridgewater Clark. Ye Suk was the oldest of 8 children to their mother Hwacha Cho and father Junho Lee, all born in South Korea. Later in life, she met her husband David and moved to the US, where she worked very hard to provide any need that the family had. Mrs. Elvesta E. M. Cypress June 9, 1941 - April 16, 202

Elvesta Ellis Maclin Cypress entered eternal rest on April 16, 2022. She was born June 9, 1941, to the late James Ellis and Viola Johnson Ellis. She was the fifth of nine children. She was preceded in death by brothers Odon Ellis, Russell Ellis, Lawrence Ellis, Marcus Ellis. Sisters Delphine Brown, Audrey Montgomery, and Brenda Bagby.

She accepted Christ at an early age and joined Rocky Branch Baptist Church and later transferred her membership to Zion Baptist Church, she then forwarded her membership to Union Branch Baptist Church where she served as a faithful member until her passing. She served the lord most of her life in various ministries and auxiliaries such as: The Missionary, Senior Choir, Health and Wellness Ministry, Rosemond Smith Senate, J. B. Brown Choir, and The Women’s Bible Class.

Elvesta attended Southside High School in Dinwiddie, VA and later received her GED. She was employed by Titmus Optical, Southside Training Center, Brown and Williamson Tobacco Company and later retired from Central State Hospital.

Elvesta was married at a young age to Thomas L. Maclin, Sr. and out of that marriage she had two children, Archienette Maclin White and Thomas L. Maclin, Jr. That marriage dissolved and while employed at Brown and Williamson Tobacco Company, she met Robert L. Cypress, Jr. and they were married on August 3, 1974. He brought three children into the marriage Otelia C Macon, Delicia Rudolph, and Robert L. Cypress III. She leaves to cherish her precious memories her husband of 47 and a half years Robert L. Cypress, Jr; one brother, Elmer Ellis “also known as Fuzzy” (Laverne) of Richmond VA; five children, Archienette Maclin White of Chesterfield, VA, Thomas L. Maclin, Jr. (Rita) of North Carolina, Otelia C. Macon (Arthur) of Chester VA, Delicia Rudolph of Chester VA, and Robert L. Cypress, III (Bernice) of Kileen, TX; two sisters-in-law, Dellyne Samuel (Dr. James R.) of North Carolina, and Belinda Cypress (Jerry, who is Deceased) of Davenport FL; ten grandchildren, two great grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

John Stigall

July 20, 1951 - April 15, 2022 John was born to the late Constina Stigall-Walker and the late Jimmie Walker on July 20, 1951 in Mecklenburg County Virginia. He weighed 8 pounds and some ounces, a healthy big boy. John was affectionally known as, “Buck”, to his family. His grandma Mary gave him that name as he was her pride and joy.

At an early age, John was stricken with a fever which affected his brain and caused him to become non-verbal.

Around the age of twelve, our mother had to make the decision to place him in a home which was Southside Virginia Training Center in Petersburg,Virginia.

Our mother visited him quite often, and would take him treats that he loved like grapes. “Watch out for your fingers, he might bite them” she would say, (this happened with his niece Crystal on one of our visits when she was about 7 years old), but then he gave her a gentle pat on the head indicating that he understood she was a

child.

John was transferred to his new residence, Unity Family Services on June 26, 2013, where he acquired a new family. John was surrounded by people that he loved who also loved him. He enjoyed listening to music, going for a walk outside, and the day trips with his friends. John was known as the “side-eye king” by the medical staff who helped him and recently spent much time with him. They said he spoke very loudly with his eyes.

John was preceded in death by his parents, Constina and Jimmie; grandmother Mary; grandfather John; great grandmother, Anna, and his brother, Jimmie “Boo”. John received a call from God on April 15, 2022, who informed him that his new and everlasting home was ready to receive him. Rest in peace John.

He leaves to cherish his memorable life: his sister, Joyce; brother-in-law Carlisle; nieces, Renelle, Crystal, and Shenisha; nephews, Steve, Kaleef, Avery, and Brandon; great-nephew, Camren, and great-nieces Taylor and Kaleigh.

Mr. Anderson Davis, Jr., RET. Army, affectionally called “June” transitioned from this life to glory on Friday, April 8, 2022 at his residence surrounded by his loving family. He was born July 22, 1934 at Cooper Hospital in Camden, NJ to the late William Anderson and Elizabeth Davis.

Anderson had a close relationship with his family and grew up in Glassboro, NJ. He was affectionally known as “June”, Big June or Serg. One of his favorite sayings was “ You can take that to the bank”. June was avid deep sea fisherman. He enjoyed catching spots and croakers, playing cards, (Bid Wiz) and listening to jazz music. He was also, a huge Philadelphia Eagles fan.

June attended Glassboro Public Schools and later enlisted in the United States Army in 1956. June served in the Vietnam and Korean Wars achieving the rank of Staff Sergeant before being Honorably discharged after 21 years. He excelled at electronic technology and was skilled at television and radio repair. After leaving the service he worked for Green’s TV service as a technician and National Bank as an Armed Security Guard.

In 1958 June went to Seoul, Korea and married the love of his life Poo Soon (Cookie). He was blessed to enjoy this union for 64 years.

He was preceded in death by his brothers, Harold, Moses, David, Daniel Davis and sisters, Mary, Ferrer, Yvonne Figueroa, and Leolla Atkins.

June leaves to cherish his memories his beloved wife Cookie; one son, Gordon “Lenny” Bell and daughter-in-law, Sharon “Kim”; two grandsons, Christopher and Joshua; great granddaughter, Dakota; one sister, Livesta Drummond and a host of other family and friends that loved him dearly.

He was born on March 28, 1966, in Virginia to Leonard Epes Brown, Jr. and Patricia Collins Merritt. Leonard was preceded in death by his fraternal grandparents, Maude W. and Leonard E. Brown, Sr.; maternal grandparents, Clarence Charles and Leila McDanials Collins; and great aunt, Flossie M. Deadmon. Leonard was a pressman operator for over 30 years. His passion was basketball and he played on adult leagues with friends and occasionally with his daughter and grandchildren. Thomas, Julian Ayers, 83, of Chesterfield, departed this life on Friday, April 15, 2022. He was born in Dillwyn, VA and was the son of the late Stuart and Lottie Thomas. He had fond memories of growing up with 11 siblings and working the family farm.

Julian served his country and was proud to be a Marine. He retired from Dupont as a Millwright and then continued his farming passion on the family-owned Thomas Farm in Dillwyn, VA. As a skilled mechanic, he enjoyed restoring tractors and was very involved in the community through the Chesterfield Tractor Club, Chesterfield County Fair Association, and as a member of the Chester Masonic Lodge #94 A.F. & A.M..

Julian was an active member of Chester United Methodist Church and will be remembered for his devotion to his faith, family and friends.

The family will receive friends from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday, April 20, 2022 at the Chester Chapel of J.T. Morriss & Son Funeral Home. A funeral service will be held at 12:00 p.m. on Thursday, April 21, 2022 at the funeral home. Interment will follow at Sunset Memorial Park.

Horace Iverson Boswell

November 14, 1928 - April 13, 2022 On April 13, 2022, Horace Iverson Boswell, from Chesterfield County, departed from this earth; he was welcomed to his eternal home with God. At 93 years old, he left behind a legacy that will never be forgotten. He pioneered the Southern Section in the Potomac District Royal Rangers, during which his most important mission was reaching, teaching and keeping boys for Christ. He lived out his life for Jesus by being a compassionate neighbor, loyal friend, and brother in Christ for so many people. Horace was an avid gardener and builder. There was nothing he could not grow or fix, from plants to people. Horace served his country in the Army, stationed in Germany after WWII. Horace was the walking definition of God, Family and Country. He was simple yet efficient. He will be dearly missed by many.

Horace has now joined his family that has gone before him, his wife of 58 years, Audrey O’Berry Boswell; parents, Henry and Edna Boswell; brothers, Edward Boswell and Boyd Boswell; sister, Elizabeth Nelson and a baby sister. He also leaves behind the family that he built, daughter, Gwen Ellen Davis and Tom; granddaughter, Sarah E. He was born to the late Archie and Louise Hill on September 5, 1927 in Prince George, VA. He was a 1945 graduate from Carter G. Woodson of Hopewell, VA. After high school he was drafted in the United States Army and was in the Korean War. After an honorable discharge from the Army he moved to Brooklyn, NY. He retired from the city of New York and a local trucking company.

Moses was baptized in Hopewell at a church on Berry Street. He kept his mother’s bible reading one of her favorite scriptures from Exodus 20:17. “Honour thy father and thy mother: that thy days may be long upon the land which the Lord the God giveth thee”.

He leaves to cherish his memories two sons, Sam Hill of New York and Kenneth Hill, Sr, of Las Vegas, NV; daughter, Cynthia (Bill) Coleman of West VA; grandson, Kenneth Hill, Jr. of Dillsburg, PA; three grandchildren; very devoted sister-in-law, Mildred Hill; devoted caregiver since 2011, Joann Saunders Watts; among his nieces one devoted, Dianne Hill and Louise Hill from Brooklyn, NY; among the nephews one devoted, James “Peabody” Hill and Solomon Hill, Jr. (Wanda); daughter-in-law, Angela Hill from Charlottesville, VA; cousins from Stony Creek, Queen Mason (Sam), Mary Hill, Ester Sorrols, Daisey Brown from Petersburg, and New York.

William H. Baker, Jr.

January 18, 1962 - April 12, 2022 William Henry Baker, Jr., affectionately known as “Junie Baker 21” and “Uncle Will”, was called to his heavenly home, on April 12, 2022. William resided in Richmond, VA, but was originally from Norfolk, VA. He was born to Dorothy L. Baker-Garris and step-father, Robert Garris, Jr., and William H. Baker, Sr., and William’s family relocated to Petersburg, VA, when he was four years old. He attended Petersburg Public Schools and began a love for sports. During his year’s art Peabody Junior High and Petersburg High School, he participated in various sports such as basketball, track & field, wresting and football. His jersey number was “21” and also his nickname.

In the school year of 1979-1980, he was one of the favored football players who earned the AAA Championship Title which he and his family were extremely proud of.

William enlisted in the United States Army in 1982. He was employed at Community Business Group and Brown’s Enterprise of Richmond, VA. He continued his education in 2013 at J. Sargeant Reynolds Community College studying Substance Abuse Counseling.

William also had a passion for music. He attended countless concerts with family and friends who looked-up to him as a positive role model to the young and the old. William had the most beautiful teeth and smile that anyone would recognize, also William had a deep relationship with God. He also was an avid Pittsburgh Steelers fan.

Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by his grandmother, Nora Lee Key Metcalf and step-grandfather, James Metcalf, and grandfather, Sam Richard Mason.

November 17, 1948 - April 12, 2022 Lola Joy Hagen, 73, of Chester, VA, passed away on Tuesday, April 12, 2022. Born in Goldsboro, NC, she was the daughter of the late Albert Lee and Roxie Mae Massey Ingram; and was also preceded in death by a sister, Rose Kessler; and a brother, Robert Ingram. Mrs. Hagen was a devoted wife, mother, sister, aunt, and best friend. Her front door was always open, just like her heart. She worked hard at every task in her life and overcame obstacles while raising her family. She ran a successful construction company as a woman. She was a top salesman for Mutual of Omaha and was sent to Hawaii with other top employees across the country. Later, she went to work for Chesterfield County Schools as a truancy officer helping families to stay in school. Then before she retired, she was a technology teacher at Jacobs Elementary School. In her retirement years, she spent time in her yard planting flowers and planning family get-togethers. She loved seeing her grandchildren grow up and being with loved ones.

Mrs. Hagen is survived by her loving husband of 43 years, Thom Hagen; three children, Thom Hagen II and wife, Holly, James Hagen, and Jill Hawthorne and husband, Jerry; eight grandchildren, Nikki, Ericka, Savannah, Hunter, Katherine, Christopher, Karoline and Keirston; four great-grandchildren; two sisters, Patricia Ingram and Lorretta Ingram; and numerous nieces and nephews. A watchdog group is calling for an ethics probe into Congressman Kaialiʻi Kahele of Hawaii, according to a report from the Daily Wire. The Democratic Congressman is reportedly still a pilot for Hawaiian Airlines but has co-sponsored legislation directly related to the airline industry specifically supported and even lobbied for by Hawaiian Airlines. Another senior tech official resigns, says breaking through bureaucracy was like ‘working to defy gravity’

The Department of Defense (DoD) lost another top IT official on April 18 with the resignation of Preston Dunlap, the founding chief architecture officer of the Air and Space Forces.

Dunlap wrote that he was proud of the three years he spent at the Pentagon in an open resignation letter posted to social media, but that bureaucracy, a risk-averse culture, and other internal issues made innovation more difficult than it should have been.

He said the DoD fostered an environment in which it was “hard, but not impossible” to innovate and compared the effort required to break through Pentagon bureaucracy to the effort needed to push satellites past earth’s gravity.

“I’ve spent the last three years working to defy gravity and get desperately needed technology into our operators’ hands,” Dunlap said. “By the time the Government manages to produce something, it’s too often obsolete; no business would ever survive this way, nor should it.”

Dunlap’s resignation follows that of DoD Chief Software Officer Jason Weiss earlier in April and that of Air and Space Forces Chief Software Officer Nicolas Chaillan in October. Both Weiss and Chaillan used their resignations to warn that out-of-control bureaucracies were preventing a talented and dedicated workforce

“This is a massive loss for DoD,” Chaillan said in reference to Dunlap’s departure. “The number of top talent leaving the Pentagon is very concerning.

“I don’t know anyone who is as good as Preston in the entire Department. [He] Will be very tough to replace, particularly since they have yet to replace me. Even worse after [Weiss] left last month too.”

Pentagon Lacks Budget, Authority, and Vision

In the eight-page document marking his departure from the Pentagon, Dunlap painted a bleak picture of a military bureaucracy run amok, with little to no resources or support available for those trying to change the status quo.

“Not unsurprisingly to anyone who has worked for or with the Government before, I arrived to find no budget, no authority, no alignment of vision, no people, no computers, no networks, a leaky

ceiling, even a broken curtain,” Dunlap said. “You get the picture.

Sadly, I was probably better off than most who show up to serve.

“Ironically as I’m writing this, I received notification that the phone lines are down at the Pentagon IT help desk. Phone lines are down? It’s 2022, folks.”

Dunlap noted that there was a strong cadre of dedicated individuals who had worked to stand up to the Pentagon’s efforts at building a next-generation fighting force, but that they were too often blunted by bureaucracy.

Dunlap singled out a handful of individuals for gratitude in continually supporting the mission regardless of the trials faced.

Among them was Gen. John Hyten, former vice chair of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.

Like Dunlap, Hyten also tried to combat the growing military bureaucracy and, in the final months before his retirement in November 2021, he sounded the alarm

on what he saw as a number of red flags for U.S. military readiness.

During an October interview, Hyten derided what he called a “brutal” Pentagon bureaucracy for hamstringing the U.S. military. He said weapons programs took 10 to 15 years to develop on average, with others taking far longer.

“We can go fast if we want to,” Hyten said. “But the bureaucracy we’ve put in place is just brutal.”

Still other systems were scrapped outright for not immediately succeeding, he said, as was the case with the brief U.S. effort to develop hypersonic weapons a decade ago.

Further, Hyten said U.S. military leadership was making the nation less secure through the process of over-classification, essentially blocking out knowledge of their projects from the public eye because they knew that if a project were classified, there would be less bureaucratic red tape for it to become entangled in.
