Prince George Heritage Center is Back on a Roll A Cabbage Roll That Is PRINCE GEORGE

PRINCE GEORGE – After a few years on pause, the Prince George Heritage Center will resume its annual observances in 2022.

There are some favorite events that have been missed due to the Covid-19 pandemic and mandates from the government setting regulations against community gatherings, as well as challenges with international travel.

These events kick off Saturday, May 14th with the Prince George Master Gardeners Plant Sale. At past PGMG sales, many flocked to the grounds at the old Courthouse in the county’s government complex to not only purchase plants and flowers, but also learn tips on how to grow and create healthy soil for the natural

masterpieces.

For the past couple of years, memorial and honor tributes haven’t occurred.

Those included Memorial Day and Veterans’ Day activities that have typically involved local American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars.

Center Executive Director Carol Bowman explained that on Monday, May 30th, the Center will bring back

its Memorial Day Observance on the Lawn, which will include participation by local girl and boy scout troops presenting memorial wreaths on the old Courthouse lawn.

U.S. Army retired Colonel Don Vtiple is excited about the events returning to the community. “It’s an opportunity to honor those who have sacrificed their lives so we can enjoy the freedoms

that we have today,” Vtiple said of Memorial Day ceremonies. “It’s a great honor to serve our country, and those who have sacrificed everything deserve our honor and respect.”

“Memorial Day is an occasion of special importance to all Americans, because it is a day sacred to the memory of all those Americans who made the supreme sacrifice for the liberties we enjoy.

We should never forget or fail to honor these heroes to whom we owe so much,” the Prince George resident added.

Next up, on Wednesday, September 21st, the annual Steak Dinner and Auction will be held at Scott Park featuring Civil War memorabilia in the auction and reenactors on site to share history and even shoot off a cannon. In previous years’ CONTINUED ON PAGE 3

HERITAGE CENTER FROM PAGE 2 events, the Prince George Ruritan Club members volunteered to grill steaks, a reference to the Confederate cavalry raid that took place in September 1864 as part of the Siege of Petersburg during the American Civil War. The stolen cattle were driven 100 miles, part of the journey passing through Prince George County.

The Veterans Day Observance, scheduled for Friday, November 11th this year, has included special guest speakers, mainly local retired veterans as well as active duty officers serving at Fort Lee. What’s on the agenda for the 2022 observance has not yet been announced; however, it’s always brought together a large group of patriots and community members. Vtiple, who has been involved in many Heritage Center events, said it’s important for those who benefit from veterans’ willingness to fight for our freedoms and for others across the world, referencing the Ukrainian people who

are currently standing up against would-be oppressors in a time of war.

In honor of the area’s heritage, on Saturday, October 15th, the Czech-Slovak Festival is planned, with hundreds, maybe thousands, of those of that descent gathering primarily from Prince George, Dinwiddie, and Charles City counties. Many of those residents’ ancestors came from the “old country” to these areas to take up farming, purchasing inexpensive land that had been torn up during the Civil War. As a long time supporter and volunteer with the Center and with the Czech-Slovak festival, Vtiple explained that he thinks it’s tremendous that such events are coming back.

“So many people have missed this event, and I missed it a bunch,” he noted. “People travel from all over the state, and we have had 3,000 to 5,000 people attend.”

It’s also been a draw across the country and European territories, allowing all who attend from near and far to

feast on authentic Czech food like cabbage rolls.

But the food tent is not the only place where a cabbage roll will be seen – during the festival there are separate activities ranging from learning to milk a cow to pushing a head of cabbage from start to finish on the center grounds, proving the vegetable is not just for cooking,

but also for fun.

Residents and visitors will have additional chances to participate in Heritage Center events in 2022. While those other opportunities have not yet been revealed, Bowman said plans for other events and observances will be announced later this spring.

Hopewell Votes to End State of Emergency HOPEWELL

HOPEWELL— On January 11th, 2022, city council declared a local state of emergency for the city, citing the Omicron variant of COVID-19. The declaration did not close government offices to the public, but it did permit the council to hold its public meetings virtually.

At the March 22nd council meeting, City Manager March Altman stated, “In accordance with the code section, the declaration remains in full force and effect until city council determines that all necessary emergency actions have been taken and takes appropriate action to end the declared emergency by a majority vote taken in an open meeting.”

Altman added that mayor Patience Bennett (Ward 7) requested that the item be placed on the agenda as a resolution to end the state of emergency. Councilor Janice Denton (Ward 5) promptly made a motion to approve the resolution to end the state of emergency.

That motion was seconded by councilor Deborah Randolph (Ward 1).

Councilor Brenda Pelham (Ward 6) immediately disagreed with the motion,

saying, “I don’t think we should end anything, because everybody talks about the numbers [of COVID cases] going down.” She continued, “How are the numbers going to continue to go down if everybody do everything that they been programmed, I guess, to do? I think it is unsafe.”

Pelham then expressed that she would not be voting in favor of the motion.

As they prepared for the vote, Hopewell’s councilors faced the same decision that officials at all levels across the United States have recently or are currently grappling with- how to move forward in a post-pandemic world. In a recent interview with host Margaret Brennan on CBS’s “Face the Nation”, chief White House medical expert Dr. Anthony Fauci stated that the public must

Prince George Proposes Lower Real Estate, Lower Personal Property Tax Rate, Increase in Water Sewer Bills PRINCE GEORGE

PRINCE GEORGE– Under the county’s fiscal year 2023 proposed budget, taxpayers may receive a decrease in their annual payouts for real and personal property. Interim County Administrator Jeff Stoke presented the plan that includes lowering the real estate tax rate from 86 to 83 cents per $100 of assessed value and a drop in personal property tax rate from $4.25 to $3.95.

The breakdown of proposed new tax rates is: • Real Estate: $0.83 • Mobile Homes: $0.83 • Public Service: $0.83 • Personal Property: $3.95 • Machinery and Tools: $1.50 General Fund revenue is budgeted at $69,069,369, which is an increase of $6,478,675, 10.35 percent above FY2022.

This plan also eliminates the vehicle decal registration fee while still providing an additional $1,538,269 in local funds over the current year to the school system, Stoke explained.

Board of Supervisors Chair Marlene J. Waymack said, “We are excited to intro-

duce a draft fiscal year 2023 budget for consideration that lowers the tax rates for the citizens of Prince George County. With the economic markets in flux, the County has chosen a path to help mitigate the impact to our community.

The County budget process will continue until the anticipated adoption date of May 10 this year.”

When asked how the county was able to propose a tax cut considering its infrastructure needs, Stoke said, “Prince George County was able to rely on federal American Rescue Plan Act [ARPA] funds - $6 million – to help with infrastructure projects in the community. Remaining funds are from utilities reserves set aside for capital projects. In addition, a federal earmark from Congressman Donald McEachin [$3.2 million] will help with a Route 10 water line extension.”

The potentially lower tax rates is a boon for county residents, all of whom are facing higher prices and living costs due to inflation.

However, there is also a proposed increase in the county’s public water and

sewer rates at 30 percent for water and 3 percent for sewer.

“The Utilities Department is a completely separate enterprise fund from the general fund,” Stoke noted.

“The proposed increases for the water and sewer rates are due to operational needs to cover inflationary increases, to purchase needed equipment and supplies, and to maintain existing utilities assets.”

The biggest ticket item in the general fund is the allocation to the Prince George school system ($18,553,165) an increase of $1,496,522, and in the utilities fund is the $1.85 million debt payment for one year for two large capital projects - Blackwater Sanitary Sewer Regional Interceptor at $10.6 million and 3 MGD Sewer Pump Station and Force Main expected to run $17.7 million.

“The polite term is that the markets are in flux.

During this unique time, the goal of the Board of Supervisors is to provide the strongest tax rate reduction possible while still providing necessary long term investments in both facilities

and personnel,” Stoke said in a recent interview.

“In essence, a budget is a spending plan that informs the businesses and citizens of the County about the future funding and policy decisions of the local governing body,” the interim administrator stated in his presentation.

“The adoption of an annual budget is one of the most important actions of a local Board of Supervisors. Once adopted, the budget serves as a financial roadmap, which provides the citizens, media, community stakeholders, and ultimately the Board of Supervisors with a public record that shows the resources the county will use in the delivery of its services. Moreover, the adoption of the budget also serves as a work action plan for county departments that establishes and prioritizes the manner in which they will deliver services throughout the budget year.”

Chemical Release at Hopewell Plant HOPEWELL STAFF REPORT LNNUSA.com

HOPEWELL- On Tuesday, March 29th, the City of Hopewell released an alert to the public that a chemical release had been detected at one of the city’s plants.

AdvanSix, which produces nylon resin, chemical intermediates, and the fertilizer ammonium sulfate, detected a leak from one of its tanks at the Hopewell facility.

The chemical being released was Oleum, a corrosive and toxic compound used in

manufacturing some of AdvanSix’s products.

The plant took immediate action to control the situation and alerted the Hopewell Police and Fire Departments. The Hopewell Fire Department responded to the scene and remained there to ensure the situation was under control. No one was injured in the incident, and the Hopewell area plants remained operational. AdvanSix does not believe the oleum leak posed or poses any threat or risk to the community.

24-Year-Old Henrico Police Officer Killed in Crash HENRICO STAFF REPORT LNNUSA.com

HENRICO- A 24-year-old police officer with the Henrico County Police Department was killed in a three-vehicle crash the evening of Wednesday, March 30th. Trey Marshall Sutton of Chesterfield County was a fresh recruit to the department, having been hired in June of 2021, according to Henrico Police.

Sutton just graduated from the police academy in Feb-

ruary of this year and was currently in field training, assigned to the Patrol Bureau with his partner.

The crash occurred along Route 301 and is still under investigation. Two other adults involved in the incident are currently in the hospital with life-threatening injuries.

Henrico County police officers shrouded their badges on Thursday, March 31st in honor and memory of their fallen fellow officer.

Petersburg to Schedule Additional Budget Work Session PETERSBURG

PETERSBURG- The City of Petersburg held an initial budget work session on Wednesday, March 30th, to review the capital projects budget for Fiscal Year 2023.

While the presentation from city staff outlined line item capital projects for council members, the information was not detailed enough for some councilors to feel comfortable voting on the capital budget.

Ward 4 Councilman Charlie Cuthbert spoke up during the presentation, informing the Mayor that he could not read the small print of each line item in the slide presentation. Mayor Sam Parham responded that he was having to turn around in his seat to read the line items on the large screen meant for the audience.

“I don’t know why we’re

meeting if we don’t have the information. I’m squinting to look at this, I’m squinting to look at that. We might as well not be meeting,” Cuthbert lamented. “I don’t find this very meaningful or helpful.”

Upon request by the council members, city staff provided them with printed copies of the presentation, which the elected officials appeared not to receive for review prior to the meeting.

Cuthbert’s concerns about being able to see and review the information on the capital budget- a budget that he and his fellow council members will vote on soon- brings into question why the city council was not provided with such important details as capital projects, cost estimates, and funding sources as part of their agenda packet prior to the meeting.

The council is scheduled to vote on the final Fiscal Year 2023 budget at its Tuesday, April 19th meeting. Mayor Sam Parham ultimately rec-

ommended that the council schedule an additional work session to clarify details of the capital budget prior to the April 19th vote.

He suggested April 12th, one week before the vote, as a potential date for this additional meeting, but the exact meeting date and time had not been published on the city calendar at the time this edition went to press.

Storms Continue in Wake of Marina Decision

Dock Commission Chair Calls for Council to Reconsider Demo Vote HOPEWELL

HOPEWELL—At the March 22nd Hopewell city council meeting, the newly-elected chairman of the Hopewell Dock Commission, Carl Bonham voiced his perspective concerning the future plans for the marina.

Initially, council voted 5-2 against taking immediate action concerning the marina and a proposed redesigned use for the space brought forward by the Recreation and Parks Department. But shortly after that vote, council opted to schedule a March 14th special meeting to reconsider. That special meeting was held virtually, giving citizens little to no opportunity to voice their opinions on the matter; that reconsideration resulted in a 4-2 approval of the demolition of the current marina and approval of the redesign project that would turn the area into green space, public water access, and an entertainment venue (Bennett, Gore, Holloway and Pelham voting yes, with Partin absent).

During the March 22nd meeting, Bonham stood

before council and asked that they reconsider their vote on the demolition of the marina.

“With the speed this decision was made did not allow any consideration for the short term and long term consequences this might bring onto the city,” Bonham told councilors. He continued, pointing out that allowing a third party to receive all slip and boat rental fees (the current arrangement at the marina) was poor management. Further, he stated that the city only receives $25,000 annually from that deal.

“It is not the fault of city council or the slip renters and ramp users,” said Bonham. “At this stage we probably don’t want to know how much this agreement or contract will cost the city in lost revenue. It would be in the hundreds of thousands of dollars.”

He recommended cancelling the third party contract so that the city could take in all of the revenue going to the vendor currently receiving all of the fees, short the $25,000 per year paid to the city. Bonham said that the city would bring in about $180,000 annually if they

were to proceed with his recommendation.

“Instead, the Parks and Recreation director [Aaron Reidmiller] has proposed a different direction of action that you have approved,” he explained, adding that it would cost $340,000 to demolish the marina for the new venue project.

“Where’s that money coming from?” asked the concerned Hopewellian.

“He does not know. What other programs will suffer, having to come up with this

amount of money? He does not know.”

Bonham pointed out many revenue unknowns concerning the new project, but stated that it is known what revenue the marina would generate- if not demolished- by way of rental fees, personal property taxes, and boat ramp fees. He stated that that revenue could be used at council’s discretion to better the community in a variety of ways.

Former Owners Share Reasons for Shutting Doors HOPEWELL

HOPEWELL – Several businesses have shut down in downtown Hopewell, with Skrimp Shack, Wonder City Bakery, and Lisa’s Cafe closing their doors recently. Paddy’s Irish Pub was quick to follow the trend, shutting its doors early last month on March 5th.

An ice cream shop will move into Lisa’s space, already having purchased the building from the previous owners so, Hopewell Downtown Partnership Director Heather Lyne said, it’s not a loss.

The Hopewell location of Skrimp Shack closed in February. ”Friday, February 25 was our last day of operation,” Skrimp Shack posted on Facebook. “We will miss you, and we wish you all the best.”

Now, the HDP is marketing the building with a goal of finding the right business for that space.

Prior to the Shack, Bopper’s Malt Shop and Sweet Tooth Candy was operating at the site at the corner of E. Broadway and Library Street. Before that rejuve-

nation, the empty building was once a bank that sat vacant for years.

Wonder City Bakery also announced its closure last month after plans to take a break from the bakery after the owners’ first child was born.

“After arduous deliberation, Scott and I have decided to close the Wonder City Bakery chapter of our lives. We had grand plans to reopen this month after the arrival of our first baby and already restocked retail product, ingredients, and packaging in anticipation; however, various circumstances have emerged that compel us to close much, much sooner than we could’ve ever imagined,” Trish Honaker noted.

“The pandemic has brought challenges to running a small business in the restaurant industry: we’ve seen many of our costs double or triple across the board, and we’ve had difficulty finding additional qualified team members,” she added.” However, we were also blessed immeasurably during the same period: loyal customers and neighbors who’ve become cherished friends; an amaz-

ing small team who made WCB the special and delicious place it was.”

Ward 1 Councilor Deborah Randolph wished the growing family well but admitted she was saddened by the news of the bakery’s closure.

Lyne said that WCB had a great following, but the owners closed with the birth of their first child.

All the business owners had different reasons for closing but admitted there continues to be a trickle down effect from Covid pandemic measures.

Lisa Postic owned and operated Lisa’s Cafe for 16 years, but decided to pursue a new buyer; the husband and wife team ultimately closed the cafe in February, but they were able to sell the facility.

“Me and my family would like to thank you for this journey we have been on for 16 years, the good times we had, the love and laughter we share and the bond we created with you all,” former owner Postic commented.

But unfortunately due to circumstances out of our control we need to Permanently Close our Irish Pub location in Hopewell.”

Many blamed poor management on Paddy’s closure, claiming that the goal was to close Hopewell’s

site after opening another restaurant, Paddy’s Sports Bar & Grill, where Wings and Things was once located in Chester.

Owner Stephanie Marzigliano was quick to rebut those comments saying it wasn’t management, nor did she and husband Patrick have intention of closing the Hopewell location, even after opening the Chester sister restaurant. “It was our dream to open an Irish pub and this was not an easy or quick decision. We

are heart broken.”

Despite these recent shutdowns, Lyne said there are still many mainstays like Anchor Room, Sub Hut, Rosa’s Pizzeria and others that continue to attract customers and diners to Hopewell.

Other businesses have also moved into the city, including Waves Sandwich Company, located where the former Main Street Cafe was housed. Owner and operator Meredith Dean also owns Roja Taco Joint, a Latin-American restaurant

featuring authentic street tacos that opened in 2019, taking over and converting a tiny 1950s-style diner at 220 E. City Point Road into a casual dining experience complete with an inviting, atmospheric patio.

With these two new companies, one opening just before the pandemic shutdowns and the other in the midst of the pandemic, Dean is proving that there are opportunities for success in Hopewell.

‘We have to be positive’

HDP Director Says, Despite Some Business Closures HOPEWELL

HOPEWELL – Though the news of several business closures caused concern for many city residents, Hopewell Downtown Partnership executive director Heather Lyne said it means it’s just time to move forward and bring in more life to the downtown.

She said with the ongoing business launch competition, Homegrown for Hopewell, there is a chance to find companies to fill these empty spaces as program applicants can earn funding through the Main Street program.

The HDP, along with its many partners, is working with property owners to market locations for sale or lease. She explained that there continues to be a trickle down effect from Covid-19 pandemic measures, with restaurants having to close their doors, losing business, and then losing staff, many of whom did not return to work. All businesses are currently challenged with hiring and keeping employees.

But Lyne said things are moving forward. For example, a new ice cream shop is coming into the downtown area after buying the former

Lisa’s Cafe, and the owner of Quick Lunch is making renovations with goals to reopen this spring.

The city took back a Dave McCormack-owned property where Fat Babs, a pizza and donut eatery was promised to operate at 246 East Broadway. McCormack received $40,000 in the last business launch competition under the Main Street program and then was given the large building for just $1 even though taxpayers footed a more than $80,000 price tag.

He failed to move forward with the business plan, and the facility remained empty six years after the deadline set to open and operate.

Now, brothers Ed (owner) and Chip Bowman have the property with a unique arched stone facade. Ed Bowman purchased the site from the city which took it over after the Economic Development Authority was considering foreclosing on the building while it remained vacant with no activity. The Bowman’s are currently working to find a tenant with local organizations such as the HDP, EDA, Hopewell/ Prince George Chamber of Commerce, and John Randolph Foundation, as well as other supporters, helping their cause.

The creation of the City of Hopewell’s 2003 Downtown Development Plan and its Main Street designation in 2011 are both evidence of Hopewell’s reawakening.

The City has invested close to $15 million dollars in the form of new streetscapes, the reopening of the Beacon Theatre, a beautiful new library, a remodeled Marina, and the public-private partnership that fueled the redevelopment of the Butterworth warehouse into lofts.

Since receiving Main Street designation, the Hopewell Downtown Partnership (Hopewell’s Main Street organization) has captured nearly $2 million for downtown development in the form of grant funds, technical assistance, and sponsorships and spurred over $20 million of public and private investment through its championing of revitalization, Lyne reports. From new festivals to major property redevelopments and rehabs, Downtown Hopewell is beginning to make a comeback.

That includes opening of events this spring like the Farmers’ Market in downtown and Third Thursdays, with more to come once the non-profit can hire a food manager to help create and market new ideas to bring

traffic to downtown, benefitting business there. The group is still accepting applications for the position.

Lyne said there have been many positives in recent months; for example, the opening of Box 5 Cabaret Theatre operated by “The Phantom Players” at 212 East Broadway.

The cabaret theatre offers a unique entertainment experience different from the big name shows residents can catch at the Beacon. The first production, “Little Shop of Horrors,” ran February 4th-6th and new shows are on the horizon. “The DragonSlayers: A Musical Fairy Tale” will debut in early May. “Despite some recent setbacks, there is still forward momentum in Downtown with the opening of the new Box 5 Cabaret Theatre. We have to find our vision and our niche, but still there are many successes to celebrate,” the Hopewell Downtown Partnership Executive Director said. “We have to stay positive and continue to work collaboratively with other entities to keep Downtown and greater Hopewell on the rise. There is work to do, but we are always working to move forward.”

COLONIAL HEIGHTSThe Colonial Heights Police Department is working with the city’s Emergency Communications Center to implement the first phase of the Marcus Alert Program. The program is intended to provide behavioral health response to behavioral health emergencies.

The Marcus Alert program is the result of an action taken by the General Assembly in 2020, the Marcus-David Peters Act. The legislation aimed to reduce the involvement of law enforcement officers responding to a behavioral health emergency call.

The goal of the legislation was to reduce the number of people in the criminal justice system by redirecting them to treatment and recovery programs. Those championing the act also sought to spread awareness of the mental health resources available in each community.

The Marcus Alert Program creates a coordinated effort between 911 responders and 988 regional

crisis call centers to ensure that specialized behavioral health practitioners assist police officers responding to mental health-related calls.

CHPD and the Colonial Heights ECC have implemented a self-reporting form on the city’s website

at colonialheightsva.gov.

Adult residents of the city can report to emergency services providers their mental health status and any medications they may take for a mental health diagnosis in order to assist officers with vital information during a response.

Adults with children who have been given a mental health diagnosis may report their children’s status and medications as well.

The Marcus Alert self-reporting form is located on the city’s website under “I Want To” and then “Request, Report, or Submit”.

HOPEWELL- As part of women’s history month, NBC12 has recognized women across the region who positively impact the community. Hopewell Recreation and Parks’ AJ McCage was featured in a recent story for her work in the community and for the role she plays in her own family.

AJ is the Community Programs Supervisor for the department, and she engages in a little bit of everything!

From inclusion programming

to summer camp, she works with children of all ability levels and other special interest groups. AJ has been instrumental in expanding the department’s preschool and inclusion programming through adaptable and low impact activities. She has also pioneered a new relationship with Hopewell City Public Schools through a variety of in-classroom activities.

AJ was recently recognized by the National Recreation and Park Association as an inaugural member of the Young Professional Net-

work’s Top 30 Under 30.

That program is designed to highlight the nation’s best and brightest young recreation and parks professionals. AJ was also named Outstanding New Professional by the Virginia Recreation and Park Society for her work in 2020.

When she’s not busy at work, she is holding down the role of mom-of-three at home. She credits her mother with instilling family values at an early age and always making expressive activities a part of everyday life. As if she wasn’t already

busy enough, AJ is also pursuing her master’s degree in Youth Development Leadership from Clemson University.

USDA Encourages Producers to Enroll Grasslands into Special Conservation Reserve Program SUSSEX/PRINCE GEORGE MEDIA RELEASE USDA FARM SERVICE AGENCY

SUSSEX/PRINCE GEORGE- The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) encourages producers and landowners to enroll in the Grassland Conservation Reserve Program (CRP) starting next week through May 13, 2022. Grassland CRP provides a unique opportunity for farmers, ranchers, and agricultural landowners to keep land in agricultural production and supplement their income while improving their soils and permanent grass cover. The program had its highest enrollment in history in 2021 and is part of the Biden-Harris Administration’s broader effort to equip producers with the tools they need to help address climate change and invest in the long-term health of our natural resources.

Grassland CRP is a federally funded voluntary working lands program. Through the program, USDA’s Farm Service Agency (FSA) provides annual rental payments to landowners to maintain and conserve grasslands while allowing producers to graze, hay, and produce seed on that land. Maintaining the existing permanent cover provides several benefits, including reducing erosion,

providing wildlife habitat and migration corridors, and capturing and maintaining carbon in the soil and cover.

“Grassland CRP is an important working lands conservation tool that offers a win-win to both our country’s producers and the environment by supporting and enabling grazing activities, while at the same time promoting plant and animal biodiversity and stemming rangeland conversion,” said Dr. Ronald M. Howell, Jr. in Virginia. “We had a successful signup last year, and we look forward to broadening our base and working with new producers, particularly our historically underserved producers, to ensure they can access the program and its many benefits.”

FSA provides participants with annual rental payments and cost-share assistance.

The annual rental rate varies by county with a national minimum rental rate of $13 per acre for this signup.

Contract duration is 10 or 15 years.

Landowners and producers interested in Grassland CRP should contact their local USDA Service Center to learn more or to apply for the program before the May 13th deadline. Additionally, fact sheets and other resources are available at fsa. usda.gov/crp.

NFL Establishes New Overtime Rules NEW YORK

NEW YORK- On Tuesday, March 29th, the NFL announced new rules for overtime. The organization’s release of a new set of guidelines for overtime play in postseason games comes after the Kansas City Chiefs defeated the Buffalo Bills in overtime early this year.

The previous overtime rules gave the ball to one of the two tied teams based on a coin flip, with the first team to score declared the winner of the game. This highly favored the team that won the coin toss to win the game, as many fans argued when the Chiefs won the overtime coin toss during the Sunday, January 23rd game against Buffalo, ultimately defeating the Bills and securing their spot in the AFC Championship game against the Cincinnati

Bengals. But that favored position in overtime may no longer be the case with the recent rule changes.

With the new rules, both teams will have the chance to possess the ball in overtime. If the score remains tied after both teams pos-

sess the ball, the team that scores the next points wins the game. Finally, if the team kicking off to begin the overtime period scores a safety on the receiving team’s initial possession, the team that kicked off wins.

These new rules only apply

to postseason games, but they may be the solution to what some fans believe has been an unfair resolution to a tie between two evenly-matched teams- such as the Chiefs and the Bills.

We’ll have to wait until early 2023 to find out.

Ugly Win Leaves Cavs Undefeated PETERSBURG

PETERSBURG – Championship-caliber teams find a way to win. Sometimes it’s a blow out, sometimes it’s a battle, and sometimes it’s just plain ugly.

On Saturday, March 26th, the Petersburg Cavaliers led the game against their conference foe, the North Carolina Capitals, by double digits early on. But that category wasn’t the score, it was turnovers.

The Cavs’ play throughout the evening was uncharacteristically out of sync. Passes weren’t sharp, ball handling was loose, and overall play appeared sluggish.

North Carolina took control early, pushing the action as the Cavs struggled. Finding the open man, clearing the glass, and applying a tenacious manto-man defense, the Capitals were in the driver’s seat and looked set to run away with the first quarter.

Enter Walter Williams. At the 5:11 mark in the first quarter, it was Williams that sparked Petersburg. A rim-rocking throwdown led off a three-minute spurt featuring Williams. Aided by his teammates feeding him the rock, Williams also created his own

opportunities.

On a breakaway, Williams threw down a monster two-handed dunk.

He followed that up with a 3-ball, two shots from the charity line, and another ten-foot jumper. That quick burst created a 9-2 run for the Cavs pushing them out to their first commanding lead in the game, finishing the first quarter ahead 23-13.

Turnovers plagued the Cavs again in the opening of the second. The Capitals took full advantage of that, nearly eroding the Cavs lead with a 9-0 run to start off the second quarter. The Caps took the lead midway through the period. But just as it appeared they were about to pull away, they found stiff Cav resistance. This time the Cavs duo of Anthony Lundy and Williams combined to stop the charging Capitals offense. Williams dished to Lunday only to get the rock right back on a strong cut to the basket. In the next possession, Lundy drove the lane with a basket and one to keep the Cavs within three at the end of the second, Caps 47,

Cavs 44. And while the duo’s efforts did not put the Cavs on top, it kept them in striking distance, an effort that would prove invaluable in the last minutes of the game.

Off two back-to-back threes

by Kane Ma opening the third, the Caps found themselves pushing out to an eleven-point lead, 60-49. This time the Cavs’ momentum came from a familiar number, 32. Elijah Moore, held relatively silent in the first half of the game, dropped six unanswered points, drawing the Cavs within six of the lead. Williams followed by ripping down a rebound going coast-to-coast for two. Two possessions and a steal later and the Cavs had tied the game with orchestrating a 10-0 run. By the 4:58 mark in the third, the Cavs had regained the lead 64-62.

But the Capitals weren’t going away, eventually taking charge again to end the third up 7571.

Turnovers continued in the fourth as the Cavs saw three of theirs create an 8-0 Capital’s run midway through the fourth. Now facing an 88-79 deficit with 6:41 left in the game, the Cavs applied an intense defensive pressure. That effort combined with solid team ball on offense found the Cavs clawing back into the game and eventually tying the match up at 92, all with 3:30 left.

By the two-minute mark, the Cavs had taken the lead 94-92.

Enter Mr. Clutch. Holding on to a one possession lead the Cavs would need the foul line to secure the game. That had proved a bit of a struggle in the first half as they had only managed two of eight (25%).

That would drastically change in the second half. With under two minutes to play, Moore went to the charity stripe dropping two for two to extend the lead to four, 99-95.

The Capitals would get as close as two points in the end, but the Cavs would go eight for eight from the line, with Moore dropping six for six in the final two minutes, including two with ten seconds left.

Walter Williams finished the night with twenty-six points and thirteen rebounds. Moore led all scorers with thirty-five points, twenty-four in the second half. He also went 10 for 13 from the line (77%).

Two additional Cavs reached double digits on the night, Bernard Alston with 17 and Donovan Willis with 11.

Ty’Quon Reid led the Capitals with 22 points, joined by Dyron Jones who added 20 points.

The Cavs uglied their way to a 103-101 victory to remain atop the ECBL. At 7-0 they are sole owners of first place in their division, conference, and the league midway through the season.

Commonwealth’s Unemployment Rate Decreased to 3.2 Percent in February, Labor Participation Rate Still Lagging Virginia Payroll Employment Increased by 21,300 in February RICHMOND MEDIA RELEASE OFFICE OF THE GOVERNOR

RICHMOND– On Friday, March 25th, Governor Glenn Youngkin announced that Virginia’s unemployment rate fell to 3.2% in February while total nonfarm payroll employment increased by 21,300 jobs. The Commonwealth’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate of 3.2% is 1.4 percentage points below the rate from a year ago.

The labor force increased by 14,138 to 4,291,990, as the number of unemployed residents decreased by 3,330 to 136,004. The number of employed residents rose by 17,468 to 4,155,986. Virginia’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate continues to be below the national rate, which fell from 4.0 to 3.8 percent.

The Commonwealth’s labor force participation rate increased slightly by 0.1 of a percentage point to 63.0 percent in February. The labor force participation rate measures the proportion of the civilian population age

16 and older that is employed or actively looking for work.

“Given our current economy and business environment, now is a great time to forge a career and join the workforce in the Commonwealth.” said Governor Youngkin. “Although we see an uptick in the labor force participation, my administration is laser focused on continually increasing our labor participation rate.”

“With a 3.2% unemployment rate in February, Virginia continues to outperform most states,” said Secretary of Commerce and Trade Caren Merrick. “The number of employed residents grew while our labor force rose significantly last month.”

“The latest jobs figures indicate that Virginia is trending in the right direction,” said Secretary of Labor Bryan Slater. “The increase in February payroll jobs is encouraging, as year-overyear job growth was spread across most industries.”

Virginia was tied with Georgia for the fourth

lowest seasonally adjusted unemployment rate among the Southeast states behind Oklahoma, Alabama, and Arkansas. Virginia was tied with Georgia for the sixth lowest rate among the states east of the Mississippi.

Indiana, New Hampshire, Vermont, Wisconsin, and Alabama had lower rates.

Virginia was ranked 17th in the nation for the seasonally adjusted unemployment rate.

Over-the-year employment growth in Virginia had been positive for six consecutive two years ago in February 2020 but dramatically changed course with the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. In February 2022, Virginia’s over-the-year job gain of 2.9% was less than the 4.6% increase nationwide.

From February 2021 to February 2022, the VEC estimates that establishments in Virginia gained 111,900 jobs, an increase of 2.9%. In February, the private sector recorded an over-the-year gain of 99,600 jobs, while employment in the public

sector gained 12,300 jobs.

Compared to a year ago, on a seasonally adjusted basis, nine of eleven major industry divisions experienced employment increases while two saw employment decreases. The largest overthe-year job gain occurred in leisure and hospitality, up 55,300 jobs (+16.4%). The next largest over-the-year job gain occurred in professional and business services, up 18,300 jobs (+2.4%). Other job gains occurred in trade and transportation (+15,600 jobs), government (+12,300 jobs), and education and health services (+6,000 jobs). Within government, local (+12,600 jobs) and state government (+1,000 jobs) both gained jobs over the year while federal government saw a decrease in employment (-1,300 jobs).

The largest job loss during February occurred in finance (-2,900 jobs) to 207,200.

The second largest decrease occurred in manufacturing with a decrease of 2,200 jobs to 236,200.

Middleburg Winery Wins 2022 Governor’s Cup

RICHMOND- The winner of the 2022 Governor’s Cup was announced late last week as Governor Glenn Youngkin hosted the annual celebration of Virginia wines at Main Street Station in Richmond. This year’s event marks the 40th anniversary of the competition. This year’s winner is a 2019 Unité Reserve from Cana Vineyards and Winery of Middleburg, Virginia.

Winemaker Melanie Natoli is the first woman to receive the award in its history. Natoli has been the winemaker and vineyard manager for Cana since 2015.

This year’s competition saw a record number of entries, with 615 wines featured from over 100 different Virginia wineries. The wines were evaluated by a panel of judges based on appearance, aroma, flavor, commercial suitability, and overall quality. The winning reserve is a red blend of Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot.

Safe and Sound Task Force to End Practice of Kids Sleeping in Local Government Offices RICHMOND MEDIA RELEASE OFFICE OF THE GOVERNOR

RICHMOND- Governor Youngkin announced on Friday, April 1st that he has launched an initiative aimed at creating safe housing placements for children in foster care. As April 1st marks the start of Child Abuse Prevention month, the “Safe and Sound Task Force” will bring together government agencies, the Virginia League of Social Services Executives and other community partners to end the practice of children sleeping in local departments of social services, hotels and emergency rooms.

“It is unacceptable that last year over 150 children in foster care spent the night in places that just simply are not meant for kids. When this challenge came to our attention, my administration knew we had to act swiftly to ensure that every child has a safe place to belong,” stated Governor Youngkin.

“Beyond the immediate need, we hope Virginians from all walks of life will step up to help children in foster care.”

Over a six-month period in 2021 (February 1-July 30, 2021), 163 children were

displaced for at least one night in unsuitable sleeping arrangements. This phenomenon occurs because of a dire shortage of foster homes, kinship family placements, and beds in group homes and residential treatment centers.

These youth ranged in age from 7-17 years. Social workers or law enforcement personnel stay overnight with children who are displaced, creating an undue burden on already overworked staff. This greatly exacerbates the existing workforce shortages in the child welfare and criminal justice systems.

Janet Kelly will serve as the Special Advisor for Children’s Issues and convene state and local government agencies, residential facilities and hospitals, and community partners to collaboratively seek immediate solutions to this crisis. The Task Force

objectives include finding safe placements for kids who are currently displaced, ensuring a reservoir of safe placements for kids who may need them in the future, and eventually making recommendations that go upstream to address policy and systemic changes.

The Virginia Department of Social Services and the Virginia League of Social Services Executives raised this ongoing issue in July 2021, and since then Eric Reynolds, the Director of the Office of the Children’s Ombudsman, and several state agencies have worked to identify some of the root causes.

“While there are a number of issues that created this untenable situation, it will require collaboration and creativity at both the local and state levels to solve it. We are grateful to every child wel-

fare worker who has worked to the best of their ability to ensure these kids are safe and we look forward to working together with them to end this practice,” stated Secretary of Health and Human Resources John Littel.

“I appreciate how swiftly Governor Youngkin reacted to this information and for providing the leadership necessary to end this practice.”

“The current situation involves children in foster care who are often inappropriately placed in emergency departments and other non-licensed settings without mental health treatment or qualified professional support,” said Andrew Crawford, The Virginia League of Social Services Executives (VLSSE) President and Director, Bedford County Department of Social Services. “The Virginia League of Social Services Executives is committed to addressing the continuing crisis associated with placement of children in foster care with behavioral and mental health needs. Local Departments of Social Services look forward to collaborating with the Governor, our state partners and our private sector professionals to find solutions for Virginia’s most vulnerable children.”

RICHMOND- On Monday, March 28th, Governor Glenn Youngkin signed into law House Bill 1239, a move that authorizes individual localities to lower car tax rates.

The piece of legislation, patroned by Delegate Phillip Scott, is meant to address sudden spikes in vehicle values, such as the one caused by the Covid-19 pandemic.

The constitution of Virginia currently mandates that localities tax personal property owners on 100% fair market value. Signing this bill into law allows car tax rates to differ from personal property

tax rates. Governor Youngkin said of the legislation, “Many Virginians are struggling due to rising prices;

now it is up to local leaders across Virginia to step up and fight inflation with real tax relief.”

Navy Aircraft Crashes off Coast of Virginia STOCKTON

STOCKTON, VA- A Navy aircraft crashed in the waters off the coast of Virginia near the Maryland border around 7:30pm on the evening of Wednesday, March 30th. A statement from the Commander of Naval Air Force Atlantic Public Affairs reported three people on board the aircraft and that of those three, one person was killed in the crash while

two were injured.

Maryland State Police rescued the two injured persons from the water; the deceased victim was found inside the craft.

The name of the deceased crew member is not being released at this time.

The aircraft was a Navy E-2D Hawkeye assigned to the East Coast Airborne Command and Control Squadron. It crashed into the waters near Wallops Island and Chincoteague, Virginia.

The Navy is currently investigating the cause

and circumstances of the incident.

POLICE CONTINUE TO INVESTIGATE FATAL SHOOTING CHESTERFIELD COUNTY POLICE DEPARTMENT PRESS RELEASE

CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, VA – Police continue to investigate a fatal shooting that occurred in the 3300 block of Tanners Way on Tuesday, March 22.

At about 8:15 p.m. on March 22, police responded to multiple calls about gunfire heard in the area. Upon arrival, officers located an adult male victim, identified as Kyshawn T. John-

son, 18, in a nearby wooded area. Johnson, of the 2100 block of S. Penmore Road in Richmond, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Credit Card Theft and Fraud: 1969 | March 28, 2022

This week, the Chesterfield County/Colonial Heights Crime Solvers program needs your help to solve a credit card fraud.

On Jan. 8, 2022, the victim arrived at Gold’s Gym in Colonial Heights at around 2:30 p.m. While the victim was inside working out, an unknown person removed her purse from her vehicle and used her credit card to make several large purchases. Police were able to obtain a photo of the suspect using the victim’s credit card in Jimmy Jazz inside Southpark Mall.

Yes, Virginia, There is Such a Thing as a Woman On September 21, 1897, Francis Pharcellus Church had to explain to eight-yearold Virginia O’Hanion that there was indeed a Santa Claus in his now famous editorial “Yes, Virginia there is a Santa Claus”. Today, Mr. Church would have had the dubious honor of explaining to Virginia that there is such a thing as a woman.

We believe the editorial would have gone something like this…

Yes, Virginia, There is Such A Thing as a Woman VIRGINIA, your little “wokees” are wrong. They have been affected by the political correctness of a woke age. They do not believe except they be propagandized. They think that nothing can be, so therefore everything can be. Has the collective intellect of the world advanced so far that the foundational science of biology falls prey to the sub-

jective whim of those bent on adjusting it to their ideology. Only in America can a nominee for the highest court in the land, selected partly because of her gender, be so openly confused by its definition.

Yes, VIRGINIA, there are women, and they can be defined. Or have 174 years of the women’s rights movement been in vain, conducted by supposed intellectually inferior humans believing that they are women, their very existence backed by science, and indeed suffered discrimination because of it – were they not women? Do we define woman solely for political profitability? God forbid! They exist because they are.

Webster’s Dictionary defines a woman as an adult female person and a female as of, relating to, or being the sex that typically has the capacity to bear young,

being biologically endowed with a reproductive system.

Biologists and fellow scientists of anatomy have proven that women are clearly different than men – the only two options for the human species. Women have two X chromosomes and are capable of pregnancy and giving birth from puberty until menopause.

Female anatomy is distinguished from male by the female reproductive system, which includes the ovaries, fallopian tubes, uterus, vagina, and vulva.

Can’t define women! You might as well ignore science itself! You might get your leaders to hire propagandists to create theories to distort concrete facts, but even if they did not comprehend the biology, what would that prove?

Women exist as defined by the science of biology.

The definition of a woman

has never been in question for the exact reason the air we breathe has not been questioned. It’s because it is what it is.

You may tear apart the very make-up of the female body to see how it operates, but it still operates as a female. Should science itself fall prey to those that would interpret it by feelings or manipulate its agendas and absurdity, then the eternal truth with which facts fill the world would be extinguished.

Is there such thing as a woman? Ah, VIRGINIA, in all this world there is nothing else more real and abiding. The facts of biology will continue to define women, not because people wish it so or not so, but because it, by science and

by God, is so.

Hypocrisy Lives in a Vacuum of Denial In today’s political climate, facts are merely an inconvenience to the message.

Even science, supposedly the process to discovery of facts, is under attack. It has become a theoretical proving ground to those willing to redefine its findings into “conceptual truths” tailored to match their beliefs.

The President made it abundantly clear right out of the gate that he was going to appoint the first black female to the U.S. Supreme Court – an applaudable accomplishment. However, by beginning his search with such narrowed parameters, the great self-proclaimed “unifier” polarized the process, excluding candidates of all races/gender and relegating his Harvard-educated nominee, Ketanji Brown Jackson, to a political pawn.

But maybe that’s because politics are playing a much larger role in the idealistically non-partisan highest court in the land.

In 2003, then-Senator Joe Biden and his fellow Democrats filibustered to halt the

nomination of Judge Janice Rogers Brown, a black woman, to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit. Their reason? She was too conservative and ignored the law in favor of her own political views.

Fast forward to 2022 and President Joe Biden is making a politically-charged nomination of a far left individual, based on her gender and race. One who, unfortunately, has her own political views complicating the President’s agenda. During the confirmation hearing, she exhibited her leftist views, refusing to even attempt to define “woman”.

The hypocrisy? Brown was unacceptable because she was too conservative and ignored the laws for her own views. Yet Jackson is extremely leftist and ignoring the very laws of biology in favor of her own political views.

If your nominee cannot even define what a woman is, then why was it so important to nominate a

woman? The answer is in the irony and hypocrisy of this political appointment.

Ms. Jackson’s response to the question of defining a woman was simple, she could not do so because, “I am not a biologist.” No, you are not, but you are a woman. And so, as a representative of your gender, you are unable to define who you are? That has the smell of a politically-motivated woman ignoring biology in favor of her own political views.

No surprise. Unfortunately, whichever party is in power is going to select justices according to their biases, conservative vs. liberal, continuing to erode the integrity of the court and the ability to keep partisan politics out of the judicial branch. At the foundation of the three branches of government is a simple assumption: that the current President’s political alignment matches that of the majority of the people of the country and so justices appointed would reflect the same moral, ideological,

and ethical alignment of the majority of the citizens.

Tragically, when the discussion falls to such a fundamental foundational topic as to the definition of a woman, the ability or hope to expect unbiased, clear rulings from the highest court in the land appears doomed.

To an alarmingly growing number of people in America, definitions for such tricky words like “is” and “woman” are subjective to one’s own opinion – a concept that is the most detrimental attack on a society and on our country as a whole.

If there are no absolutes in the world, then life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness are nothing more than moving targets subject to the whims of the current trend in societal views, views set by the elite in charge of the country – and the dictionary they erode to maintain their power.

2022 SESSION OVERTIME SENATOR FRANK RUFF

15TH SENATE DISTRICT As has been reported, the General Assembly did not finish our work in the constitutionally allotted time. The requirement is that all work must be completed within 60 days. To go beyond that a super majority of both the House and Senate must agree. This year, because of friction between the House and Senate in the last days, it was agreed that we would allow the Governor to call us back to Richmond. Governor Youngkin has now called for a new session starting next Monday to complete the budget and a group of bills; some of which are dependent on inclusion in the budget.

The two bodies deal with legislation that requires funding two separate ways. The House will pass legislation prior to deciding if they will fund it. Therefore, at one time bills were passed into law but never funded. The Senate, rather than fill law books with needless laws, chose twenty plus years ago to pass bills with a clause requiring them to be funded or those bills would not go into law.

Here are the bills that fit into this category: Hardwood Forestry

(HB1319) Teacher’s Tax Credit for Classroom Expenses (HB103) Housing Tax Credits for Construction (SB47) Campaign Finance Audits (HB86) Foster Care Support for Those 18-21 (HB349) Care for Severe Traumatic Brain Injury (HB680)

Other Significant Bills

Education Lab Schools (HB346 and SB598) These bills deal with the issue of how we can improve our schools academically by having schools around the state pair with our colleges to develop improved teaching in the twenty-first century.

School Construction (HB563 and SB473) These bills deal with the needs of many of our school districts that need to improve their school buildings but lack the ability to borrow the funds needed for those capital projects. The two bills differ on how much and under what circumstances.

Criminal Justice Hazing (HB993 and SB440) These bills came before the General Assembly because of a death at VCU University from hazing. They differ on what the punishment should be.

Facial Recognition (HB1339) This bill would allow law enforcement to use certain facial recognition software for investigation purposes only.

Firearm Violence (HB833 and SB487) These bills differ significantly. The House bill focuses on cracking down on gang activity as Boston has done. The Senate bill focuses on studying how to reduce the use of guns in crimes by creating a Center for Firearm Violence.

Elections Appointment of Commissioner of Elections and Membership of the Board (HB305 and SB371) These bills were introduced with the goal of reducing the partisan politics involved with the Department of Elections.

Voter Identification (HB177, SB652 and SB273) These three bills deal with how to assure that every citizen is lawfully registered and their votes properly counted.

Healthcare Nurse Practitioner Regulation (HB1245) This bill continues the policy that began last year that relaxed oversight regulation.

Football Stadium Construction (HB135 and SB727) These bills deal with the Washington Commanders desire to move their team to Virginia. The proposals differ in how the taxes generated by the development would be used to finance the project.

Taxation Military Benefits Subtraction (HB1128 and SB528) Both would reduce income taxes on part of military retirement pay.

Sales Tax (HB90 and SB451) These bills would reduce the sales tax on groceries.

Income taxes (HB935 and SB579) These bills would reduce taxpayer’s liability by increasing the standard deduction.

How long will the session last?

This is the question that cannot be answered at this time. While it appears that we have much on the table, this is only a small percentage of the work that we have almost every day during a regular session. Except for the budget, if members return with a sense of purpose, these bills could be negotiated out relatively quickly.

The budget, however, could go on and on for a lengthy period. The two proposed budgets differ by almost three billion dollars. The big issue is how much tax relief are we going to give to you - the taxpayers of Virginia.

One of the issues Governor Youngkin ran on, and was elected on, was to reduce taxes. Some seem to be more interested in blocking those efforts, despite the interests of the majority of voting Virginians. I don’t believe that their attitude will change in the short run. They don’t want him to succeed.

Currency Wars Center on Russia’s Gold STEFAN GLEASON MONEY METALS NEWS SERVICE

In response to Russia’s war on Ukraine, the U.S. and G-7 countries have launched a currency war against the Kremlin. Sanctions imposed on the Russian central bank have effectively blacklisted the country from the U.S. dollar-dominated global financial system.

Now the Biden administration is attempting to prevent Russia from using gold as an alternative medium of exchange.

Last week, the Treasury Department declared, “US persons are prohibited from engaging in any transaction – including gold-related transactions – involving the Central Bank of the Russian Federation, the National Wealth Fund of the Russian Federation or the Ministry of Finance of the Russian Federation.”

In recent years, Russia has significantly increased its gold reserves. It currently possesses the fifth largest stockpile in the world, worth an estimated $140 billion.

U.S. officials want to prevent Russia from selling gold in order to fund its war machine. But Russian officials seem more inclined to take gold in lieu of dollars as payment in international trade.

Russia declared that “unfriendly” countries must now pay for Russian gas and other products in rubles or in gold – a move that boosted the value of the beleaguered currency.

Moscow is even considering adopting Bitcoin as an alternative means of payment in international trade, according to reports.

“If they want to buy, let them pay either in hard currency, and this is gold for us, or pay as it is convenient for us, this is the national currency [Russian rubles],” said Pavel Zavalny, chairman of the Russian Duma Committee on Energy.

Zavalny is also urging China to de-dollarize and switch to settlements in gold, rubles, or yuan.

China, India, and the Far East are pivotal players in the global currency wars. If they opt out of the increasingly expansive U.S. sanctions regime, a new bipolar monetary order could emerge.

Global confidence in the

Federal Reserve Note “dollar” as world reserve currency is rapidly eroding.

If the U.S. can suddenly declare that it is freezing the dollar assets of a major foreign central bank and banning their gold from circulation, a lot of other countries will be worried they might be next to get blacklisted. They will naturally want to have a Plan B in place.

It is impossible to predict exactly how the erupting currency wars will reshape the global monetary system.

One possibility is that gold will play a much more prominent role than before.

Ever since the U.S. rescinded gold convertibility in 1971, the fiat “dollar standard” has been in force – backed implicitly by oil and the promise of Saudi Arabia and other OPEC producers to accept dollars as payment.

The petro-dollar is now at risk of losing its hegemony.

While the U.S. has historically been able to use its financial and military might to keep Middle Eastern countries in line, it may be overplaying its hand in trying to force the entire world to shun Russia.

As with waging any war, however justified it may be, there will be blowback.

The overt weaponization of the financial system against Russia will result in counterattacks directed at the Federal Reserve Note.

A currency’s value cannot be maintained through force alone. Plenty of dictatorships throughout history have gone down the economically ruinous path of hyperinflation.

America’s recent inflation spike may be an ominous sign of what’s to come.

Cheesy Baked Cod

RECIPE ADAPTED FROM LAURENSLATEST.COM SERVINGS: 4

Ingredients • 3 cod fillets (12 ounces each) • 1/2 cup mayonnaise • 1/2 cup freshly grated Parmigiano Reggiano cheese

• 1 tablespoon parsley flakes • 2 tablespoons basil leaves • 2 cloves garlic, minced • 1/4 teaspoon salt

INSTRUCTIONS 1. Preheat oven to 450 F. 2. Line baking sheet with parchment paper. Place fish fillets on baking sheet and set aside.

3. In small bowl, stir mayonnaise with cheese, parsley, ba-

Emma Jane Belcher, 73, of Matoaca passed away on Tuesday, March 29, 2022. Born July 23, 1948, she was the daughter of the late Jacob and Emma Cox, and was also preceded in death by eight siblings.

Emma dedicated her life to her family and enjoyed spending time with her daughters, grandchildren, and especially her beloved great-grandchildren. She was a fantastic cook and enjoyed working in her garden, tending to her cherished flowers.

She is survived by her loving and devoted husband of 55 years, David Columbus Belcher III; two daughters, Regina Christine Monile and husband, Joseph, Rebecca Ann Webb; five grandchildren, Nathan McCoy, Joseph Monile III and wife, Priscilla, Cheyann Christine Allen, Angela Jane Webb, Jacob Adam Webb; two great-grandchildren, Landon and Noah; a great-grandson on the way, Ian; three siblings; and numerous nieces, nephews and other extended family members.

Services and interment will be private.

Arrangements are being handled by the Colonial Heights Chapel of E. Alvin Small Funeral Home, 2033 Boulevard. In lieu of flowers, please make memorial contributions in Emma’s name to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place Memphis, TN 38105.

Lillian Ann Culler, 72, of Disputanta, passed away on Tuesday, March 29, 2022. Born in Tazewell, VA, she was the daughter of the late Charley Carlyle Farmer and Roburley Angnes Lowe Farmer. She was also preceded in death by her husband, John Wayne Culler, Sr.; son, Joshua Culler; and sister, Nancy Holthauser.

She is survived by her son, John Culler, Jr. (Jo Catherine); grandchildren, Jaci, Riley, Annalynn, William, Jamison, and Jocelyn Culler; siblings, Linda Henson, James Brown (Vicki), Rita Horne (Eddie), and Donna Harris (Buzzy); numerous nieces and nephews; and former daughter-in-law, Misti Zirk.

Lillian was a woman of faith and loved her Lord and Savior. She was a beloved wife and grandmother and will be dearly missed.

A funeral service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, April 2, 2022 at the Petersburg Chapel of J.T. Morriss & Son Funeral Home.

Our hearts were saddened as our beloved sister, aunt and friend, Sylvia Darlene Coleman, transitioned from this life into the arms of her Lord and Savior, on Tuesday, March 29, 2022.

Sylvia, better known as Darlene to her family and friends, was born to the late Bolton and Elnora Coleman, Jr., of Prince George County VA, on January 18, 1959. She was preceded in death by her sisters, Mary Ann Coleman, Catherine Whitehead & Ella Hill; maternal grandparents, George and Mary Alexander; paternal grandparents, Bolton and Elsie Coleman, Sr.; brother-in-law, Lawrence Matthews.

Darlene was born in Hopewell, VA and received her education in the Prince George County Public School System, graduating in 1977. Darlene was saved at an early age and was an active member of Word of Life Center, where her soul prospered under the tutelage of Bishop Richard H. Cross, Sr. and Elder Catherine H. Cross. Sylvia was employed with Hopewell City Public Schools for over 30 years, where she worked diligently assisting the teachers and children in the classrooms. Whenever she would go out, she always remembered each and every student, and they also remembered her. She also was employed part-time with Kid Around Childcare and the Hopewell Community Center for several years.

Darlene was well loved by all, and she never met a stranger! Although she did not have children of her own, she raised and cared for nieces and nephews as if they were her own. She was like a mom to Spencer Whitehead, Jr., Markiee Whitehead, Sr., Willie Coleman, Jr., Tonia Bland, Reed Hill, Jr., Virtonio Hill, and Mateo Dennis.

Darlene was always there to help those in need wherever she could. Darlene enjoyed traveling to the beach with the family as much as possible. She was always smiling, loved to laugh, and spend time with family. She will be missed by all who loved her from her family to close friends.

Darlene is survived by her sisters, Sharon Matthews (Lawrence) and Melissa Dennis; brothers, Willie L. Coleman, Sr. (Dorothy), Calvin Coleman, Sr. (Wanda), Andre’ L. Coleman, Sr. (Linda), Kenneth Coleman (Deborah), Wayne Coleman, Sr. (Andrea), Terry Coleman, Sr. (Lakeisha), Garry Coleman, Sr. (Babette); brothers-in-law, Reed Hill, Sr. and Spencer Whitehead, Sr.; godchildren, Tonia Bland, Reed Hill, Jr., Karl Cross, Jr. and Skylar Coleman; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, aunts, uncles and friends.

Barbara Pittman Gleason, 75, of Hopewell, VA, passed away March 28, 2022.

Born and raised in Hopewell, she was the daughter of the late Herburt Nevelle Pittman and Mary Blanche (King) Pittman. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Gleason was preceded in death by her husband, Roy Thomas Gleason and son-in-law, Thomas Keller Stock. She is survived by her daughters, Kelly Gleason Stock, Aimee Lynne Gleason, and Erin Gleason Faile; grandchildren, Patrick Thomas Stock, Ryan Keller Stock, Robert Blaze Smith, London Jade Smith, and Paris Jean Smith; sisters, Kaye Pittman and Lynne Pittman.

October 9, 1930 - March 28, 2022 Bernard Michael Leddy, 91, of Petersburg, passed away on Monday, March 28, 2022. He was born in Pawtucket, Rhode Island.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Marie Kratochvil Leddy.

Bernard is survived by his companion, Barbara Wagner; and dear friend, William Barga.

Bernard was a graduate of St. Raphael Academy. He went on to serve in the U.S. Army for 3 years and continued with the U.S. Army Reserve for 35 years. He was employed with Brown & Williamson Tobacco Company as Supervisor until his retirement.

Bernard was a member of American Legion Post 284, Colonial Heights, VA, American Legion Post 2, Petersburg, VA, and Fraternal Order of Eagles, Petersburg, VA. A visitation will be held from 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. on Friday, April 1, 2022 at the Petersburg Chapel of J.T. Morriss & Son Funeral Home. Left to cherish her memories and miss her dearly, her husband, Michael A. Settles; a son, Matthew P. Reid; mother, Siasamorn Parker; and countless number of friends who loved her and supported her until the end.

Frieda resided in Hopewell, VA, after being honorably discharged from the United States Army. She was last employed at Amazon in Chester, VA, until her health issues rendered her disabled. Frieda knew the Lord, loved the Lord and her soul and spirit are with the Lord.

She leaves to cherish her memory her son, Dr. Thorsten Einhäuser; daughter-inlaw, Andrea Kröner-Einhäuser; treasured puppy, “Otto” and her trusted assistant Ms. Cheryl Taylor.

Services of final regards will be held 11:00 A.M., Monday, April 4, 2022 in the Chapel of J. M. Wilkerson Funeral Establishment, Inc., 102 South Avenue, Petersburg, VA. The interment to follow at Virginia Veterans Cemetery.

On Sunday, March 27, 2022, Carole Johnson Kreynus, of Hopewell, VA went to be with the Lord. She was surrounded by her loving family.

Carole was the anchor of our family and will be sorely missed.

She was the daughter of the late Jesse and Pauline Johnson; she is also preceded in death by her husband, John Kreynus; daughter, Tracy Kreynus; and brother, Ronnie Johnson.

Mrs. Brown was a loving and devoted mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend to many. In her leisure time she enjoyed spending time with her children and grandchildren, shopping online, watching her soap operas, wrestling and westerns. Mrs. Brown was a faithful member of Mount Carmel Baptist Church in Hopewell, VA. Mrs. Brown was preceded in death by her husband, Bernard Brown, Sr.; daughter, Teresa Hayes; brothers, Charles Hayes, Melvin Hayes, Jr. and Wilbert Hayes; sisters, Mary Andrews and Diane Hayes.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Lewis and Lillian Adkins; his loving wife of over 60 years, Dorothy Ann Adkins; son, Daryl Wayne Adkins; and his granddaughter, Asia Marie Adkins. He is survived by his children, Howard L. Adkins (Julie); Terrie Redford (Danny); Ronald Adkins; Rex Adkins (Tina); Barry Adkins (Cathy); and Regina Adkins; seven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren; a brother, Cecil Adkins; and sisters-in-law, Mary Kay DeWeese, and Linda Tisdale (Lahne); as well as numerous extended family and friends. Howard was a retired U.S. Army veteran serving from 1949 until 1973; he served during the Korean War and the Vietnam War retiring as Staff Sergeant. He was an avid car collector and was particularly found of his 81’ Chevy truck. Howard enjoyed watching his boys play softball and he loved spending time with his family. A memorial service will be held at J.T. Morriss & Son Chester Chapel at 2:00 p.m., Thursday, March 31, 2022. The family will receive friends following the service. At an early age, she confessed her life to Christ and became a member of First Baptist Church, Jarratt, VA. There she served on various ministries to include: the Deaconess Board and Missionary.

She was predeceased by her husband of 58 years, Charlie Parham, and two sisters, Hazel Butcher and Emmerline Hill.

Susan Pulley Daniels, 78, of Hopewell passed away peacefully with her family by her side at home Friday, March 25, 2022.

She was born July 7, 1943, to the late Samuel H. Pulley and Gladys Pauline O’Merry. Susan was also preceded in death by her husband, Gerald H. Daniels; son, Michael Ryan Daniels; brother, Thomas E Nunnally and a loving daughter-in-law, Rebecca V. Daniels. Susan is survived by her three sons, Gearld E. Daniels of Dinwiddie, David H. Daniels of Hopewell and Wayne L. Daniels of Hopewell; a loving and devoted daughter, Toni Carol Daniels of Hopewell; a loving and devoted step-daughter, Beverly Mathias and her husband, Mitch of Amelia; eight grandchildren, Jonathan Walker, Christopher Daniels, Brandon Daniels, Kevin Daniels, Patrick Daniels and wife, Valerie, Ryan Daniels, Justin Daniels and Ryleigh Daniels; four great-grandchildren, London Daniels, Owen Daniels, Nolan Daniels and Brelynn Walker; a loving, caring sister, Gladys Nunnally of Colonial Beach VA and a very special daughterin-law, Rhonda Crowder of Richmond VA. Susan loved her family. She grew up in Dinwiddie, VA where she met her true love and got married at 17 years old. Then the fun began with each of her children. She had a lifetime of fishing with her family and bowling with family and friends. She loved watching NASCAR with a cold Miller or two. Susan also loved gardening. She was loved by everyone and at times had more children at her house then she had of her own. They all called her mama. She treasured each and every one of you all.

Susan will be deeply missed by her family and friends, but she leaves a lifetime of memories. A memorial service will be held 10:00 a.m. Saturday, April 2, 2022 at the Colonial Heights Chapel of E. Mrs. Harmon retired from Park 500 of Philip Morris after 20 years of service. In her free time, she enjoyed knitting, crocheting, quilting and traveling the United States. She is survived by her sons, Thadious Millard Harmon and James Benjamin Harmon; grandchildren, Maria Katherine Harmon, Margaret Drummond Harmon, Benjamin Weston Harmon, Jacob Michael Harmon, and Elizabeth Wills Harmon; sister-in-law and lifelong best friend, Barbara Bevins; and siblings, Carson Davis Hagen (Carol), Kerry Ann Nappier, and Donald Lee Hagen (Carol). Danette Stewart Godette (Danny) also known as “Snoopy” and “Hammer”, of 3720 Robert E. Lee Drive, North Prince George, VA, peacefully transitioned and entered eternal rest, after an unexpected and brief medical crisis, on Thursday, March 25, 2022, at VCU/MCV Medical Center in Richmond, VA, surrounded by his children and relatives.

Danny was number eight of thirteen siblings. He was born May 8, 1963, to the late William H. Godette and Hattie M. Taylor-Godette. He was preceded in death by his brother, Kevin “Leon” Godette; paternal great grandfather, George Godette; paternal grandmother, Ethel WilliamsMoore; maternal grandfather, Clifford Taylor and maternal grandmother, Martha Jones Taylor; and foster child, Adrian “Dre” Moore.

At an early age, Danny accepted Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior. He attended Bethesda Bibleway Church under Pentecostal guidance and leadership of the late Bishop John W. Bean and Elder Willie Lee Balthrop. As a young man, Danny continued his faithful walk with Christ as he joined and became a member of Calvary Temple Church of Our Lord and Jesus Christ, under tutelage of the late Apostle Wesley Taylor, Sr., now under the leadership of Elder Wesley Taylor, Jr. Danny received education through the Petersburg School System. He went on to gain employment with the Petersburg Housing and Redevelopment Authority for numerous years. To further his career, Danny was employed at VCU Medical Center in the Plant Services/ Engineer Department, where he worked more than 20 years, until he experienced an on-thejob medical crisis, on Tuesday, March 22, 2022.

Being a God-fearing Christian man, Danny had a very kind-heart, especially for children. His empathy led him to become and excel as a Certified Foster Parent. And in talking with him you would learn two things: 1. Nothing touched his heart more than the fact that he could provide a stable, safe, and supportive home for children and 2. His views and philosophy “WERE ALL” children’s needs are special.

Danny was a loving father, brother, and uncle to many. He enjoyed shopping and

attending family gatherings. Danny was also an avid Dallas Cowboys fan. He was a soft spoken and quiet man with a ginormous sense of humor! His quick wittedness was unmatchable. And his infectious smile will always be embedded in our hearts and minds.

Preceded in death by his parents, Danny leaves to cherish his memories: six children, Tamika Harper-Young (Pepper) and Tierra Ridley of Chester, VA, Tyron Ridley of Orlando, FL, D’Angelo Smith of Hopewell, VA, LaQuante Horton (Brianna) of Petersburg, VA, and Shakita Hill of Richmond VA; ten grandchildren, Kampbell Harper, Kiyan Young, Taylor Williams, Rian Williams, Dayton Smith, Akiera Dawson, Anjelha Dawson, Angelo Smith, TreShaun Williams, and J’Arri Hill-Crews.

William B. Daniel, Jr.

October 19, 1951 - March 25, 2022 William “Bill” Byrd Daniel, Jr., 70, of DeWitt, VA, passed away on Friday, March 25, 2022. Born in Petersburg, VA and raised in Dinwiddie County, he was the son of the late William B. Daniel, Sr. and Ethel Wells Daniel. Bill was a 1972 graduate of Dinwiddie County High School. He was a retired Correctional Officer from the Virginia Department of Corrections after many years of dedicated service. He enjoyed hunting and riding his Harley Motorcycle. He was a former member of several motorcycle riding clubs. Bill will be remembered for his love for God, his family, and Harley Davidson Motorcycles. He was lovingly known by his grandchildren as “Big Pop.” Bill is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 47 years, Ann Avery Daniel; three children, William “Billy” F. Daniel (Rachael), Kimberley “Kim” Davis (Jeremy) and Timothy “T-Byrd” B. Daniel; seven grandchildren, Willy, Ryan and Victoria Daniel, Brandon, Alexis and Forest Davis, and McKynsie Daniel; one great-grandson, Quincy Redmon; and a great-grand baby expected in August; his mother-in-law, Peggy Avery; one brother, Thomas “Tommy” Daniel (Margie); and two sisters, Beverly Lawson (Jack) and Janice Johnson (Phillip). December 27, 1942 - March 24, 2022 Cameron Eugene Costley, Jr., 79, of Colonial Heights, passed away on Thursday, March 24, 2022. He was preceded in death by his parents, Cameron E. and Gladys Burton Costley; and his son, Cam Costley. Cameron served his country proudly in the National Guard. He retired from VDOT after 45 plus years of dedicated service. Cameron was an avid hunter and had a love for NASCAR. She was preceded in death by her father, John Henry Madison and mother, Alice J. Madison; husband, Willie Lee White; grandson, Thomas “Mickey” Madison; three brothers, John Henry Madison, Jr., Charles E. Madison and David L. Madison; and one sister, Inez F. Parham.

She worked over 32 years in housekeeping and loved her work. Pearl was baptized and a member of Tabernacle Baptist Church until her health declined. “Cat” loved to dance, sing, and she loved her family dearly.

On March 23, 2022 our hearts were sadden by the loss of our beloved, Ms. Regina Lynette Reid of Petersburg, VA. Regina was born on October 9, 1958 in Petersburg, VA, to the late Mary Agnes Jones.

Regina was preceded in death by her stepfather, Ernest “Hat” Jones, Sr.; grandparents, Willie and Laura Rowlett, sisters, Ernestine Crenshaw, Denise Pajela, Vera Mayfield, Laura Reid, and Rita Epps; and her brothers, Thomas Akins and Carl Reid.

Regina attended Petersburg Public School System. She worked as a Certified Nursing Assistant. Regina had a kind heart and generous spirit. She adored her nieces and nephews. Regina was very giving and enjoyed helping others.

Alice Evelyn (Mitzie) Vedomske Albert, 90, of Prince George, went to be with her Lord and Savior on March 23, 2022. Mitzie was born on January 9, 1932 to Evelyn Marie Kvasnicka Wyborney and Gilbert Henry Wyborney. She was raised by her mother and beloved stepfather, John Phillip Janosko.

She is preceded in death by her parents; husband, Richard Albert; sister, Jean Holmstrand; grandson, Graham Bush; and stepson, Richard E. Albert.

Mitzie leaves to cherish her memory her sister, Phyllis Brockwell; sons, Ben Vedomske and wife, Theresa, Steven Vedomske and wife, Linda; daughter, Donna Hamm and husband, Jack; stepdaughter, Sarah Miller; grandchildren, Rebekah Cowne, Adam Vedomske, Michael Vedomske, Rachael Rufrano, Jay Hamm, Stacy Curtin, and James Bush; 12 great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews; as well as a special sister-in-law, Dot Munford.

Mitzie grew up in Prince George, Virginia. She was a graduate of Disputanta High. She was a lifelong member of Trinity United Methodist Church where she sang in the choir for many years. In her final years, her greatest pleasures were visits from family and friends and watching the world go round through her favorite window.

David was also preceded in death by a son, Carl David Rutherford II. Robert Lee Knott III

September 28, 1944 - December 24, 2021 Robert Lee “RL” Knott III went to be with his Heavenly Father on 24 December 2021. RL was born 28 September 1944, in Abingdon, Virginia, the middle child of Robert Lee Jr and Mildred Louise (Linkous) Knott. His paternal grandparents were RL Sr and Orrie Mae (McGee) Knott of Bristol, Tennessee; his maternal grandparents were Frank Anderson and Mary Ann (Willis) Linkous of Coeburn, Wise County. He graduated from Abingdon High School in 1963 and moved to Hopewell to work at Firestone. It was there that he met his first wife Myra Lavell Gray from Perryville, Arkansas, and they were married in 1965 at St Anne’s Catholic Church in Bristol, Tennessee. RL and Myra had one son Robert Lynn, and she celebrated 25 years of service at Firestone before she passed in 1990.

RL left Firestone to work as an ironworker in Hanover County and then as a commercial construction superintendent for J W Enochs, Inc in Hopewell for 20 years, supervising the building of numerous projects including the Bank of Southside Virginia branch office and PetSmart in Colonial Heights, the Big Dipper galvanizing plant in Petersburg, and the downtown campus of J Sergeant Reynolds Community College in Richmond.

The last step in his career found him as Clerk of the Works for the Prince George County School Board for 14.5 years, retiring in 2014.

His first assignment was the renovation of N B Clements Jr High, and during his tenure, he supervised the construction of the new School Board office and the new North Elementary.

RL was an avid fisherman for many years and participated in several local bass fishing clubs. After taking up golf twenty years ago, he enjoyed many hours with his golfing buddy Randall Stanley of Petersburg up until four months before his death. He joined the Disputanta Ruritan Club in 2006 and served as secretary for numerous years. RL never forgot his roots and was a life member of the Historical Society of Washington County, Virginia.

He is survived by his second wife Pattie Treakle Arwood with whom he shared 25 years of raising chickens, exploring antique and junk stores, roaming through cemeteries searching for the elusive ancestor, and just enjoying their golden years together. Also, son Robert Lynn Knott (Teresa) and two grandchildren, Robert Hunter (Taylor) and Hannah Elizabeth, all of Prince George; two sisters Barbara Knott Banyasz of Bon Air and Theresa Mae Knott of Mechanicsville; niece Sharon Hoban Farleigh (Randy), nephews Sean Hoban (Melissa) and Dr. Daniel A Knott (Lauren); three grand-nephews and a grand-niece.

A graveside service will be held at Merchants Hope Memorial Gardens on Saturday, April 2, at 1 pm, followed by a Celebration of Life reception at Trinity United Methodist Church, 10021 County Drive, Disputanta, Virginia 23842, from 2:30 to 4:30 pm.

President Pushing for New Tax Precedent WASHINGTON

WASHINGTON, DC- On Monday, March 28th, President Joe Biden unveiled his new $5.8 trillion dollar budget for the next year. But

by Tuesday, that plan was on life support.

The President is attempting to develop a new method of taxing Americans. While initially targeting only the wealthiest 0.01% of households in the country, the budget proposal seeks to set a new precedent by taxing the value an asset accrues in theory before it is actu-

ally sold and converted into cash.

One key Democrat Senator has already torpedoed the idea and possibly the entire budget. West Virginia Senator Joe Manchin said, “You can’t tax something that’s not earned. Earned income is what we’re based on.”

While the move is presented as a “rich tax”, in theory the policy could be applied to all Americans, eventually building tax liabilities based on assets as opposed to income – assets whose values rely on market fluctuations, subjective appraisals, or government economic policies.

Budget Promises Progressive Revenue Strategies and Unlikely Reductions WASHINGTON

WASHINGTON, D.C.- President Joe Biden’s $5.8 trillion budget for next year claims to trim federal deficits and boost taxes on the wealthiest Americans. What would be a key revenue stream for funding the administration’s agenda, built on a “tax the wealthy” strategy, was immediately challenged by members of the President’s

own party. And with over two-thirds of the proposed $1 trillion deficit cuts scheduled in the last five years of the ten year plan, execution of those reductions would require little to no adjustments in the plan for ten years, something both an unpredictable economy and changing political leadership has never historically accomplished.

In addition, the budget’s military spending does not account for rising inflation,

putting additional pressure on the armed services who are facing aging equipment and planned reductions in troop sizes. Mathematically, the military budget increase lags behind the current rate of inflation, creating a reduction in the overall military budget.

The front-loaded increase in spending from the budget would require future administrations to address the reductions.

Rising Cost of Ammunition Hits Firearms Owners in the Wallet ALLAN STEIN

PHOENIX—Competitive target shooter Dan Sutton, of Glendale, Arizona, has seen the price of everything go up over the past year. But it’s the rising price of ammunition that really hits close to home.

“It started a year ago,” said Sutton, one of a dozen contestants in a long-range shooting competition at the Ben Avery Shooting Facility in Phoenix on March 26.

“I don’t know about [hurting firearms] ownership—it’s like the price of gas. Some people have quit shooting because of the price of bullets. You can’t find some of the components a lot of times. Especially primers.

Bullets. Gun barrels. They went up in price, and it’s hard to get a new barrel.”

Sutton told The Epoch Times that two weeks ago, nearly 100 target shooters attended a similar event. He said turnout would have been higher if not for the skyrocketing price of gasoline.

“We would have had well over 100, but some of them said they couldn’t afford six dollars for [a gallon of] gas to drive all the way from New York out here,” said Sutton, who’s been target shooting since he was 13. He’s now retired, living on a fixed income.

“We buy reloads, so we need to find the components—the primers, the powder. It’s been going up [in price] for over a year. It’s pathetic what’s happening in this country.

“Demand keeps going up and they can’t get enough [supply]. They can’t get the

raw materials. Or nobody wants to work anymore to fill the jobs.”

On Dec. 21, 2021, U.S. ammunition supplier Vista Outdoor announced price increases on many of its products because of rising material costs.

“As we continue to see supply chain constraints and increases in our raw materials, we are increasing our pricing to help offset those rising costs,” Jason Vanderbrink, the company’s president of ammunition, said in a statement.

Beginning April 1, the cost of Vista’s primers and powder will go up 5 percent. Likewise, it will cost 2 to 8 percent more for handgun ammo and 3 to 8 percent more for rifle cartridges. Customers will see a 3 to 12 percent price increase on shotgun shells.

No new primer orders will be accepted until further notice, the company said.

In February 2021, black powder manufacturer Hodgdon said that product shipping challenges were because of “record demand for all reloading components and not a reduction in the supply of powder.”

“With long-time hand-loaders looking to stock up and new gun owners looking for ammunition, there is an unprecedented demand for powder and other reloading components,” the company said in a statement.

Hodgdon said it shipped a record amount of powder in 2020 and expected to ship even more in 2021.

The company ramped up its overtime production and hired more employees to “get the

A number of factors have caused prices of firearms and supplies to go up, including the rising price of fuel and commodities used in ammunition: copper, lead, brass, and ingredients to make gunpowder, according to Mark Oliva, director of public affairs for the National Shooting Sports Foundation.

“The cost of labor is continually going up” to meet high demand, he told The Epoch Times. “That’s just Economics 101. It remains to be seen where it settles.”

Oliva said there’s plenty of economic pain to go around in 2022.

“It’s the same thing other industries are dealing with right now—from food to the auto industry.”

He said the demand is ref lected in the 18.5 million background checks on firearms purchases conducted in 2021, compared to 13.7 million in 2019, prior to the pandemic.

Odd Calibers Out

“It kind of went off the charts for a couple of years,” he said.

Oliva likened the situation to the “toilet paper effect,” with

people now grabbing boxes of ammunition off the shelves once supplies began to dwindle.

Even now, it’s difficult to obtain odd calibers of ammunition while more popular sizes of rounds, such as 9mm, .45, .380, and .22, have become more available over time, he said.

For reasons of quality control and savings, some hunters and target shooters prefer to reload their ammunition.

Like everything else, Oliva said, the rising cost of producing ammunition will be passed on to the consumer.

“The manufacturer has to pay more to make the final product. It’s unfortunate because it’s not something unique to our industry,” he said.

Due to economic sanctions on ammunition made in Russia, many U.S. retailers will have to look more to domestic manufacturers—and that’s a good thing for the industry, Nicholson said.

Despite the lack of materials the outlook for firearms and ammunition supplies is positive, he said.

“As far as we’re concerned we’re prepping for some massive growth. The good news for us is ‘Made In America’ is going to be more valuable,” he said.

At the Ben Avery facility, competitive target shooter Gerald Hernandez, of Amarillo, Texas, lamented the rising prices.

“There’s no product out on the market today—bullets, powder, all the components for reloading—there’s a shortage across the board,” Hernandez told The Epoch Times.

“As a result, you see fewer competitors coming to these events. Not only that, [but] the rising cost of fuel. It’s a decision somebody has to make” whether or not to attend them, he said.
