MWR: A World of Online Resources for Military Families

For most of us, one of the first resources and acronyms in the Military we come to recognize is the MWR (Morale, Welfare, and Recreation). You may have called them or been down to the MWR building on post to check out renting assorted items. They do have an array of tables and chairs, sporting equipment, and even inflatable bounce houses to rent out for parties, personal use, or even your company’s fun day. Their services and activities include bowling alleys, golf courses, fitness centers, and travel items such as tickets and attractions to name a few. There are even more options that they operate depending on your location as it varies by duty station. For those who might not know, the MWR has even more resources through their online webpage, and one of these amazing resources is free access to many educational

services for Service members and their families. If you head on over to lee.armymwr.com you can find the well-known recreation link for rentals, but by clicking on the Home Life tab and then choosing the Libraries tab you will be greeted with a list of informative services and links you might not have known were at your disposal. You can utilize these services with DOD verification and/or a library card depending on what you are interested in. You can obtain a library card at the Fort Lee Community Library on post if you haven’t already acquired one (they are located on the second floor, just off the elevator in the Army Logistics University). You can access an assortment of reading material via the military network and on a personal

computer, or you can download content to a personal device such as a Nook.

You can also sign up for a free account with Tutor.com. This is a great resource that will give you 24/7 access to an online tutor in any subject that you may need. This comes in handy for Service Members and their family members making their way through college. Maybe your child needs extra instruction in a challenging class, or you need a refresher in geometry to help get said child through difficult homework in math? They cover K-12 and higher education to meet your family’s needs.

Wanting to add another language to your repertoire or brush up on one already acquired? Perhaps you’re relocating to an overseas duty station and would like to learn that country’s pleasantries to start you off, or perhaps you want to add a foreign language into your homeschooling curriculum? You can sign up with the Mango Languages program for a free account via the MWR site and explore their many languages to study in your own time.

When it comes to eBooks and audiobooks, there is a list with links to access, read, and download a vast assortment of material in whatever genre you are looking for. From the Army Digital Media Library, EBSCOhost eBook collections to National Academy Press and the world’s largest online news stand, Zinio, you can find exactly what you want. You will also discover a wide array of eBooks for children and teens through different Tumble Books categories from ages 1 through elementary, grade 2-6, and 7-12. From an assortment of animated picture books, games, read along, graphic novels, educational videos and chapter books, there is something to fit every child’s needs.

Under the tab for online Resources for Learning you can find a webpage that gives you one-stopshop access to Gale databases for the Fort Lee

Community and patrons of the Community library here. You can go in and explore the available resources they offer for all different ages and interests. There are so many articles, magazines, self-help, and the list goes on. Want to do work on your vehicle? The Chilton Library link offers a do-it-yourself, step-by-step guide for vehicle repair and maintenance with illustrations. This could come in handy as there is a self-service auto shop on post. Wanting to experiment a bit and bake outside of your comfort zone? You can find recipes and visual guides under Hobbies and Crafts. Likewise, you’ll find various information on legal forms and instructions for filling them out.

Just for the kiddos, there is a wonderful link towards the bottom of the list on children’s websites which offer fun and safe educational activities and reading. From PBS, National Geographic, and Smithsonian for kids to NASA Kid’s Club and Tumble Books eBook libraries, there is something for all interests. For the little ones there is Storytime Online which has a wonderful selection of books to choose from. They are read by various people in an online video format (can be played through YouTube player) and have animation and are quite engaging to view. There is also a link for free coloring pages to print out with an assortment of seasons, holidays, and interests for art time when you’d like something new to keep them busy.

Now that you know of some of the other incredible resources offered here through the MWR to our Service members and their families, I encourage you to check them out in more depth when you have the time! Take advantage of the various tools to assist in your educational and everyday endeavors, personal goals, and enriching you and your children’s lives.

Make Your St. Patrick’s Day Spread Green with Envy

Freshen up your St. Patrick’s Day menu with easy, light sandwiches inspired by the traditional color of the festivities. These open-faced noshes can be perfect for lunch, snack time or even as an appetizer for get-togethers with friends and family.

Layered with a smooth cream cheese and mozzarella mixture then topped with crisp cucumber and a stem of green bell pepper, these St. Patrick’s Day Sandwiches are easy and cute, which makes them a fan favorite at nearly any green gathering. They’re also sprinkled with lemon juice to add a little acidity and create a nice, light bite.

Plus, this recipe is quick to make. When you’re in a rush to get everything on the table for the party, it’s easy to throw together and get on the platter in next to no time.

The sandwiches pop off the plate with their bright, seasonal garnishes. While sure to attract attention and have your loved ones asking “Where did you get this idea?” they’re also an easy way to sneak a few vegetables into your kids’ diets.

St. Patrick’s Day Sandwiches

Yield: 8 sandwiches

• 8 ounces plain cream cheese spread, softened

• 1 cup finely shredded mozzarella cheese

• salt

• 4 English muffins

• 24 slices cucumber

• 8 thin slices green pepper

• fresh cilantro leaves

• lemon juice

• lemon slices, for garnish (optional)

Directions:

1. In bowl, mix cream cheese spread, mozzarella cheese, and salt well.

2. Split English muffins in half. Cut each muffin half into shamrock shape.

3. Spread cheese mixture over each muffin half.

4. Place three cucumbers on each “shamrock,” one on each “leaf.” Use green pepper slice as stem. Place cilantro leaf on top of each sandwich.

5. Sprinkle sandwiches with lemon juice and add lemon slices, for garnish, if desired.

Social Media: Today’s Hub of Info for Military Families

Just breathe. Being new to the Military or a Military Installation can be a little overwhelming at first. To be honest, that is one emotion you will get quite accustomed to as a Military family, Spouse, and Service Member. However, the Military and your Duty Station have an arsenal of services and resources to help your family for many different areas and situations. There are also other ways to gather information about a new base, whether you prepare to PCS, have just arrived, or have been here a while. Nowadays, social media is a major source of information we utilize. When we are alerted to a PCS, one of the common things first done is to add the new Installation’s home Facebook page to our feed to start the flow of information we will need. Next, Spouses usually join the Facebook page for the Spouses of that installation to do some questioning research and peruse other posts for insight.

A popular treasure trove of information can be found on the Spouses Facebook page for your Installation. There are a myriad of resources to be had there. From different Military branch

acronyms and traditions all the way down to numbers for various departments at the clinic, information on the schools for our children, or hours of the Commissary during the Holiday season. Yes, you could do an internet search to aid in accumulating information on the areas that matter and affect your family. There are many articles and tidbits of information out there, but when you want something more pinpointed, and in real time such as a venue or organization with a list of requirements, the Spouse’s page will have the 411 to help you navigate your questions from those who are seasoned spouses and those who have had firsthand experience. Want a church with a certain atmosphere, a gym with childcare, a salon that specializes in a certain technique? How about the auto repair shop everyone prefers or if you’ve experienced a long waitlist with childcare on post? Are you arriving at a new duty station soon, have a list of priority questions, and were just told you have two weeks to execute a DITY move and pressed for time? The Spouses page will reign in that overwhelm and get you feeling as

prepared as you can be.

If you reside on your Military installation in housing, there are usually Facebook pages for the individual communities that you reside in. Be sure to request to join your neighborhood’s page as this can be another valuable resource for you and your family in terms of information. You usually have the helpful reminder post about when the water might be shut off for your street due to a leak or even the holiday schedule for trash pickup for those of us who space things easily. You can ask your neighbors for assistance in bringing home a furry friend who accidentally got out of the house or maybe inform someone of a missing toy or item of value that has been located at the nearby park. Most moderators of the page will usually let you advertise your home business and services or maybe you have an inquiry as to anyone having the resources to make a certain product you are in the market for. The most convenient of all is the call out for your neighbors on a certain ingredient you are missing, such as a teaspoon of baking powder while mid-baking, and the hospitality call to arms of your neighbors’ responses. Whatever it may be, you’ll tend to get a few replies in a timely manner from those helpful souls. Lastly, let us give ode to the haphazard posts of gold nuggets that tend to save us time and headaches every now and again. How many of you have ordered dinner from a delivery service?

Maybe you didn’t want to take your young children out, everyone in the house was under the weather, or maybe being new here and stuck in the hotel on post has you craving something other than microwaveable food? Knowing the best food delivery company that can get past the gate and onto post successfully, so your order isn’t canceled, is a great share. That sort of question in our feed seems to be glanced over as you scroll until you really do realize that it is important in its own right. There are also questions regarding décor advice on how to work with a difficult housing room layout, how to get ink pen out of your Service Member’s uniform, and “What in God’s creation is this insect hanging out on my back porch” posts that tend to be helpful to more people than you would think. Let us not forget that handy screen shot in your phone from the picture someone kindly posted of the hours and gate closures on post to keep us from detouring when we need to get somewhere in a timely manner. A genuine lifesaver for sure!

The need for information, and usually fast information, is the way of the Military and life nowadays. The ability to have updates, FYIs, and pressing questions answered makes life easier. Whether you are looking for recommendations on a family-friendly outing within a day’s drive, contact information for something you’re having no luck acquiring, needing advice or direction on a sensitive military issue, or the best place to shop for certain things, the Spouse’s page has you covered.

Science after Dark: Glow Science Museum of Virginia

We’ve got fun hands-on STEM activities throughout the Museum like glowing drinks in our Boost! exhibition kitchen, glow bracelets in The Forge and glow room full black light art fun! River City Taiko

Taiko is a community group based in Richmond, VA, that plays traditional Japanese drums and related instruments. “Taiko” is the Japanese word for “drum,” and has also come to refer to a modern style of ensemble drumming. Many of the drums used by River City Taiko were built by the group out of barrels covered on each end with rawhide.
