Students, Parents Protest CHHS Mask Mandate

School System Ignores Governor, VA Supreme Court Decision COLONIAL HEIGHTS

COLONIAL HEIGHTS Approximately ten students were required to leave Colonial Heights High School on Tuesday, February 8th for failure to adhere to the school’s mask mandate. That number increased on Friday morning, February 11th, as approximately twenty students and parents protested the mask mandate outside of the Colonial Heights High School, only to be turned away from entering the building without a mask.

On Tuesday, February 8th, two Colonial Heights students and three parents addressed city council accompanied by additional students and parents attending the meeting to convey their concerns. The speakers expressed their frustration with both the school’s continued mask policy and the Colonial Heights School Board’s decision to ignore Governor Glenn Youngkin’s executive order allowing students and their parents to opt out of school mask

mandates in Virginia.

While the students garnered both admiration and overall support from the council, Mayor Gregory Kochuba expressed the council’s limited authority when it comes to addressing school issues. “Let me say I was very proud of the high school students that came. They did a great job,” he said. “The school board is elected by the citizens of Colonial Heights. They are a

separate government entity.

They oversee and have oversight of the school system.

The city council does not have that oversite,” Kochuba added.

Councilor Dr. Laura Poe also spoke out in support of the parents and students.

“My position is that the executive order should be followed. School policy cannot usurp an executive order,” Poe said. She acknowledged the importance of safety ear-

ly on but believes the continuation of a mask policy is unnecessary and detrimental to the students. “In the beginning of course, it was an err of caution to make sure we were following the guidelines. But at this point cases have died down. We are not seeing the deaths we were seeing in the beginning, and it’s really more of a burden on the students.

from being able to socialize, to see smiles on each other’s faces; and really to hear the teachers,” Poe added.

Councilors continued to speak with the concerned parents and students after the meeting.

Three students in attendance spoke with LNN to express their frustration and expectations of the school and the school board. Colonial Heights senior Hannah Chapman said that according to the Governor’s executive order, the students have the right to choose to wear a mask or not. Senior Hannah Pfleiger also agreed that parents and students have the right to decide. Junior Elana Chapman echoed that sentiment saying, “I believe if you don’t want to wear a mask, you don’t have to wear a mask. And if you want to, you could.”

The students said that school officials said “It was their choice” as to whether they remained in school or not, meaning that if they did not comply with the mask mandate, they would be required to leave.

Parents in attendance also spoke with LNN about their

concerns. One of those parents, Mary Pfleiger recounted a phone call she received Tuesday morning. “I got a call this morning from the principal of Colonial Heights High School to let me know that my daughter was in school not wearing her mask and that she was being asked to leave if she did not wear her mask.” Pfleiger asked the principal if her daughter would be accommodated if she went home, to make sure her classwork was taken care of. Pfleiger was informed that she could do her classwork at home, however she would be required to come to school physically or they would fail her regardless of the grades she earned on the paperwork the school sent home.

Terri Grubb expressed another issue with the school’s enforcement of the mask mandate. She said that her children have exceptions for the mask mandate for both medical and religious reasons. However, Grubb said, “The staff at the school is still forcing them and bullying them and harassing them in the hallways and in the class.” She continued, “They

are infringing on my children’s rights. They are not following what our rights are as a family and what our doctor says is right for our children.”

On Monday, January 24th, Virginia Governor Glenn Youngkin’s second executive order gave parents the right to decide whether their kids wear masks in school or not.

On Friday, February 4th, Circuit Court Judge Louise DiMatteo issued a temporary restraining order against Governor Youngkin’s executive order. Four days later on Monday, February 7th, the Supreme Court of Virginia rejected on procedural grounds a petition from parents seeking to invalidate the Governor’s executive order.

On Wednesday, February 9th, the Virginia Senate passed SB739 which would allow parents to decide whether or not their child wears a mask in school. The next step for that bill is to be voted on by the Virginia House of Delegates before being sent to Governor Youngkin’s desk for his signature.

We received a call back from another high school staff member informing us that, per Principal Janssen, all communications with the media need to go through the Superintendent’s office.

When LNN contacted the Superintendent’s office, we were asked if we had reached out to the high school for comment. After informing them that high school staff referred us to the Superintendent’s office, the staff member said they would have someone call us for comment. In addition, LNN sent emails to each school board member, as well as the school board attorney and secretary. At the time this article went to print, no one with the Colonial Heights School system had returned our calls.

Based on the Governor’s executive order and the highest court in the state’s decision to dismiss the challenge against it, the writing is on the wall – when it comes to masks, parents decide.

Whether local school boards will see that and comply is yet to be seen. LNN will continue to monitor the story.

Hopewell Staffing Issues Impact FY22 Reassessment HOPEWELL

HOPEWELL— Hopewell has appropriated funding to outsource the real estate reassessment process this year. Virginia code section 58.1-3250 requires localities to conduct a general real estate reassessment every two years.

At the Tuesday, February 8th Hopewell City Council meeting, City Manager March Altman requested that council members amend the fiscal year 2022 budget in order to appropriate $130,000 of unassigned funds balance so that work can begin on the reassessment process.

Facing a major administrative hurdle, Altman also asked that the council authorize him to take the necessary

actions to begin the general reassessment.

“We had planned on conducting the general reassessment in-house,” explained Altman. “Unfortunately, we’ve had two untimely departures from the real estate office, leaving our assessor and a part-time administrative assistant, and we don’t have the staff to go out into the field and do the reassessment work at this time.”

This predicament comes in the wake of a substantial number of unfilled positions in the City of Hopewell.

Those empty jobs range in type, but include a number of key positions that, if they remain empty, are posed to have a detrimental effect on the city’s ability to conduct business as usual.

Altman continued, say-

ing that in order to get the work completed and have it effective for January 1st, 2023, “We need to start work now.”

He explained that $6,391,737 was available in the unassigned funds balance, which was plenty to cover the cost of outsourcing the reassessment. While only $130,000 is needed to start the work, an amount of $275,000 is planned for the following year’s budget to complete the work.

During discussions with councilors, Altman said, “With the real estate market the way it is now, we would anticipate increases in values, so we need to have a sound assessment done when we’re looking at everyone’s assessment probably going up in the city.”

Vice Mayor Johnny Partin made a motion that city council amend the fiscal year 2022 budget to appropriate $130,000 from the unassigned funds balance in order to begin work on the general reassessment of real estate, allowing for the city manager to do what is necessary to start the project. The motion was seconded by Councilor Deborah Randolph, and passed 6-1 with Councilor Jasmine Gore dissenting.

What remains to be seen is whether the city of Hopewell will continue to experience a plague of vacancies, and if city management will be forced to draw on unassigned funds more often in order to make up for the lack of staff to get the work of the city done.

HWC Working to Reduce Stress on Water Systems HOPEWELL

HOPEWELL— Vice Mayor Johnny Partin recently related to city council members the Hopewell Water Commission’s efforts to address issues facing the city’s water systems.

The current drainage systems experienced eight sanitary sewer overflows in 2021, a year that was marked by intense storms and increased rain. “We were treating the influx of stormwater and wastewater,” said Partin, adding that this issue occurred in other localities across the Commonwealth as well.

He explained to fellow council members that the commission is currently working on “I and I” projects (inflow and infiltration)- instances where stormwater

gets into the wastewater system, and wastewater gets into the stormwater system.

“The commission approved a $1.45 million list of projects to help address this issue,” explained Partin, saying that he and City Manager March Altman would bring the full list of projects to council for approval at a future meeting.

Partin told councilors, “The whole goal is to work toward reducing the stress on our wastewater treatment plant”, explaining that these projects would help extend equipment lifespan, which would in turn keep operational and capital costs stable.

All of the HWC’s 2022 projects have been and continue to be on the city’s stormwater resiliency plan. The total cost adds up to about $3.6 million when taking into account the money generated by treating stormwater

runoff from landfills as well as monetary matches.

A large-scale goal for area wastewater treatment plants is the reduction of the outflow of phosphorus and nitrogen into nearby waterways. Partin reminded council that there needs to be a focus on and massive capital investment in phosphorus removal in order to lower the overall total phosphorus amount from an average of 1.06 mg/liter to 0.2 mg/liter.

“Depending on different types of technology that are feasible for our plant, it can be anywhere from… $75 million to even $120 million,” said Partin. Other cost factors that could impact the price are labor shortages and supply chain issues.

Some good news, reported Partin, was that while the city’s nitrogen permit allows for 1.8 million pounds

to be released per year, the city only discharged 900,000 pounds, thus leaving a credit. “We were able to sell $200,000 in excess nitrogen credits,” said Partin.

However, he added, “We did have our phosphorous permit lowered from a little over 76,000 pounds per year to just under 62,000 per year.”

Last year, the city reported almost 69,000 pounds discharged, forcing the purchase of additional phosphorus credits to cover the 7,000 pound difference.

Despite that credit purchase, the city did not lose any capital, and the commission’s work came in under budget for 2021. Further investment in 2022 is expected to address the water system issues, reducing strain on both city drainage and water treatment.

BOS Presents Commendation to Sheriff Bucky Allin for His Service to Prince George County PRINCE GEORGE

PRINCE GEORGE - At its January 25th regular meeting, the Prince George Board of Supervisors presented a commendation to former sheriff Bucky Allin for his service to Prince George County. Sheriff Allin has served with the county for 35 years, 17 of which were as Sheriff.

He began his employment with the County in 1986 as a part-time temporary building maintenance mechanic, then in 1987 became a part-time temporary animal warden. He established his career in law enforcement as a full-time patrol officer in the Police Department in

1987 where he also served as a police detective. In 1994, his title changed from patrol officer to police officer and in 1998, Sheriff Allin transferred from the Police Department to the Sheriff’s Office, becoming deputy sheriff. In 2004, Sheriff Allin was elected as the county’s sheriff, a role in which he continued to serve the County of Prince George until his retirement on December 31, 2021.

School Mask Lawsuit

Dismissed by VA Supreme Court RICHMOND

RICHMOND- The Supreme Court of Virginia has dismissed Castillo v Youngkin, the lawsuit filed by a group of Chesapeake parents against Governor Glenn Youngkin’s Executive Order Two. Executive order two gave Virginia’s parents the option to send their children to school without masks, a controversial move made on Governor Youngkin’s very first day in office.

The order issued by the Supreme Court states that the court “cannot control or restrict [the Governor’s] effort to influence school masking requirements”. The Chesapeake school board is also named as a defendant in the suit, but the dismissal order explained that, because state law only requires that schools follow the CDC’s guidance “to the maximum extent practicable”, it gives school boards the option to modify or forgo that guidance if they deem it appropriate for their school system.

Attorney General Jason Miyares issued a statement on the dismissal, saying, “The Governor and I are pleased with today’s ruling. At the beginning of this pandemic,

Governor Northam used his broad emergency powers to close places of worship, private businesses, and schools and impose a statewide mask mandate. Nearly two years later, we have better risk mitigation strategies and vaccines, and we know much more about the efficacy of requiring children to wear masks all day. We agree with the Court’s decision and will continue to defend the Executive Order. This is a victory for Virginia families.”

On Wednesday, February 9th, Senate Bill 739 sponsored by Senator Siobhan Dunnavant, passed the Senate on a bipartisan vote. If it passes the Republican-controlled House of Delegates, the bill will enshrine the parental opt-out of school mask mandates in Virginia code.

Governor Youngkin said of the passage of Senate Bill 739, “I promised that as governor, Virginia would move forward with an agenda that empowers parents on the upbringing, education, and care of their own children. I am proud to continue to deliver on that promise. This vote also shows that school boards who are attacking their own students are stunningly detached from reality. It’s time to put kids first and get back to normal.”

POLICE SEEK ROBBERY SUSPECT

MEDIA RELEASE CHESTERFIELD COUNTY POLICE DEPARTMENT

CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, VA – Police are investigating a robbery that occurred at the Cricket Wireless store, located at 11601 Midlothian Turnpike, at about 5:00 p.m. on Friday February 4th.

Police said a male suspect entered the business, during an encounter with an employee the suspect assaulted the employee causing minor injuries. During the assault the suspect stole items the employee was holding. The suspect then fled on foot

into the shopping center.

The suspect is described as a black male, approximately 5’8 and a medium build. He was wearing a blue jacket, black shirt, blue surgical mask, jeans, and dark colored shoes.

Police continue their investigation into this incident.

Motor Vehicle Theft: 1962 | February 7, 2022

This week, Crime Solvers needs your help to solve a motor vehicle theft.

On Nov. 7, 2021, at about 9 p.m., a silver 1998 Honda Civic was stolen from the Amazon parking lot at 1901 Meadowville Technology Parkway in Chesterfield County.

On Nov. 20, 2021, the same vehicle was found abandoned after a hit-and-run crash at the intersection of Hull Street Road and Warwick Road in the City of Richmond. Later the same day, a Hispanic male attempted to retrieve a firearm from the vehicle at Seibert’s Towing in Southside Plaza, but was denied access. The firearm was later determined to be stolen.

Sometime between the initial theft and the crash, the vehicle was spray painted black and purple. The suspect appears to be a Hispanic male in his 20s. He arrived at the Amazon and Seibert’s in what appears to be the same gray, four-door Dodge Dakota

pickup with black rims.

Flying with One Wing SENATOR FRANK RUFF

15TH SENATE DISTRICT Last week brought a new challenge to our office. My right arm, my aide Cindy, was out most of a week because of covid contact.

Meanwhile, the secretary decided that, with the virus running rampant in the Senate, she needed to quit.

The end result, we were hampered in responding to all the calls and emails.

Our VCU student intern Basit did a super job. I apologize to those who could not get through in a timely manner. While I am in session, committee, and subcommittee meetings most of the time, the success of our office is very dependent on Cindy. Without a secretary in place, we were able to get our page, Bliss, from Prince George to assist in answering the phone for a while. He was a big help.

Morning Prayer Each day’s full session begins with a prayer. This past week we were honored to have Dr. John (Bo) Bohannan offer a powerful prayer. He was joined by his wife, Jody and their daughter, Joelle.

Legislation This year, because of divided government, as expected many bills that are passing the House will come to the Senate which will block their passage.

Likewise, many successful Senate bills will be rejected in the House. Governor Youngkin ran on issues that many voters agreed with. His successful campaign was a major reason why Republicans won the House. Despite this, the Senate Democrats are voting down those issues that are important to many voters. Voters in the future will decide if they are making a major mistake by not listening to the voters.

The next week and a half will be a mad dash to deal with any bills that originated in the Senate. Often these are the more complicated or controversial proposals. I am fortunate that most of my bills are ahead of the rush, therefore, I will be able to give more attention to working on issues that will be dealt with in the budget.

My Proposed Bills Thursday, a Finance Committee subcommittee approved my legislation that deals with assisting teens in continuing their education or training past high school. Senate Bill 27 is an adjustment to existing law

that allows private groups such as GRASP to assist 10th and 11th graders to understand that, no matter what their family’s finances, money is available to assist them to a brighter future.

Too often, high schoolers that don’t have the right assistance decide that they have no future. This results in either dropping out or simply going through the motions in high school.

GRASP assists those young people that want to go to college or go into job training programs.

Those counselors help with applications and assure those students they work with that, if they apply themselves, then GRASP will guarantee that scholarships will be available.

The scholarship money is available because, for every dollar that an individual invests in this program, they will receive a tax credit of 70% of that dollar. This encourages more folks that want to help young people to get involved. The adjustments that my bill makes gives them a little more credit but also raises the cap in order for more to be involved. For at least the last several years, donors have overwhelmed the available resources.

Data Centers Mecklenburg has been very fortunate to have the

Microsoft data centers that have been built around Boydton and others that will soon begin construction in other parts of the county. While most data centers do not hire vast numbers of permanent employees, they bring big dollar investments that add to the county’s tax base as well as construction jobs. I offered Senate Bill 736 that would work to bring data centers to more communities. The subcommittee rejected the idea 3-2 simply because they could not or would not understand that our competition is from other states.

Under current law, if a company invests at least $150 million and employs more than 50 full-time employees, they get a tax break on some of the equipment. Because often they are staffed by employees of contractors, that job requirement can be a detriment. My bill reduced the number of required jobs to make some of our counties more attractive for investment. The majority of the committee were willing to let other states win by default.

The Key to Healthy

COMMUNITIES The connection between communities and the government systems that manage them is undeniable. In order for communities to be healthy and strong, to grow and prosper both economically and socially, their political systems must govern in a healthful manner.

The responsibility for that falls on the elected officials, appointees, and bureaucratic staff that manage local governments; their actions, methods, and intentions set the tone for the communities they serve.

For a community to thrive, its leaders must have its best interests at heart. The reason for their service must be out of love of their community and the desire to see it succeed. A lack of commitment to their community makes

for a poor leader. And poor leaders make for struggling communities.

When leaders are focused on other interests besides those of the community they serve, the results are detrimental for the community.

If officials set their city or county on a path that they prefer or find beneficial rather than choosing what the community wants or benefits from, those officials are leading for the wrong reason.

In a recent example, the Colonial Heights School Board and Superintendent have continued a school policy that directly contradicts Governor Youngkin’s Executive Order Two (that grants parents the choice to send their children to school without a mask), the Virginia Supreme Court’s decision

to overturn a lawsuit challenging that executive action, and the will of parents and the choice of students. Does that decision truly reflect the will of the people of Colonial Heights? Or does it reflect the opinions and preferences of school board members and school administrators?

What are the motives behind officials ignoring a governor, a court, and the people they are elected to represent?

People step up to run for local office for a variety of reasons. Some want to use a local-level office as a springboard to higher office down the road. Others are content to stay at the local level.

Some run because they want to influence their community. Others want to benefit themselves. And there are still some people who run

Decisions at the local level should always center around what is best for the community. Sometimes local leaders must set aside their own opinions or desires and instead choose to be a voice for their constituents and neighbors.

As candidates come forward for local races this spring and summer, take the time to consider what their motivation is for running for that office. It will be the biggest clue to how they will govern if elected. If their reasons are healthy, there’s a good chance that they will make leadership decisions that grow the community.

Why the Federal Reserve Note’s Decline Is FAR Worse Than Reported CLINT SIEGNER MONEY METALS NEWS SERVICE

Americans are waking up to some uncomfortable truths. One of these is the fact that government bureaucrats and the corporate media regularly lie about what is going on in the world.

They tell us the Federal Reserve Note “dollar” is strong and price inflation is completely under control. (We use quote marks because a true dollar is 24.057 grams of silver, whereas the Federal Reserve Note is a form of counterfeit.)

Millions of Americans now notice rapid price inflation and a good portion of them are pouring into physical bullion.

To illustrate just how much nonsense is baked into official inflation data, we are presenting three charts...

The first is a chart of the U.S. Dollar Index (DXY) over the past year. This one is a favorite of Wall Street and central bankers who want Americans to think the Federal Reserve Note is sta-

ble, or even getting stronger.

The DXY is very often cited in the financial press and incorporated in trading algorithms. Anyone who doesn’t dig deeper would have the impression the U.S. dollar got much stronger over the past year. They would, of course, be very wrong.

The trick is that the DXY index simply measures the dollar against other major unbacked fiat currencies around the world. It is not a measure of actual purchasing power. Not in the least!

The only real utility for this information is among currency traders and charlatans using it to convince people the dollar is much stronger than it actually is.

The next chart is more useful to ordinary Americans.

The data is published by the Bureau of Labor Statistics and purports to measure the dollar’s purchasing against a basket of real-world goods and services.

While it is closer to the actual truth, this information has also been used to mislead. Bureaucrats have been busily modifying it over the years to hide the erosion in Americans’ purchasing power.

would almost certainly rather people just focus on the DXY index. The first chart looks better than the second if you want Americans to stand patiently while being shorn by inflation.

Unfortunately for the political class, it is impossible to hide rising prices for virtually everything.

They developed novel ways to tamp down the inexorable rise in the Consumer Price Index, such as “hedon-

ic adjustments,” geometric weighting, owners’ rent equivalent, and substitution.

Government officials have baked outrageous claims right into the data. Ground beef is equivalent to steak and living in an apartment is just as good as home ownership -- that sort of thing.

The real inflation numbers may be close to double what’s reported officially.

Alternative data sets are out there, but, predictably,

bureaucrats are quick to dismiss the information as conspiracy theories published by fringe economists.

John Williams of Shadow Government Statistics (ShadowStats.com) is perhaps the best known of these. How does this “fringe” economist calculate inflation? By using the same methodology the Bureau of Labor Statistics itself employed in 1980.

Finding something unique and special to do on Valentine’s Day for your significant other can be a challenge. Every year, the day to celebrate love rolls around and every year it may seem like you’re out of ideas. Many people feel the same way.

However, with just a couple bowls, a cookie cutter and a skillet, your Valentine’s Day could start off a lot sweeter.

Try these Red Velvet Heart Pancakes, which are one of a kind and a delicious way to spend your morning with your loved one. Celebrating the day

of love has never been easier.

Start by combining flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda and salt in a large mixing bowl.

In another bowl, whisk an egg and add buttermilk, butter, vanilla extract and a few drops of red food coloring. Whisk everything together and pour it into the first bowl of dry ingredients.

Prepare a skillet and grab a

heart-shaped cookie cutter. Pour a small amount of batter into the cookie cutter in the skillet, let it cook for 2 minutes then remove the cookie cutter and flip.

Let it cook for 1 additional minute.

Add your favorite pancake toppings like butter, syrup, powdered sugar or raspberries. In the end, you will

have yourself a scrumptious breakfast, made with love and as sweet as can be.

Kids also love the fun shape and color of this breakfast. It’s a neat way to have them help in the kitchen and make a meal for the whole family.

Red Velvet Heart Pancakes Servings: 8-10

Ingredients: • 1 cup flour • 1/4cup sugar • 3 tablespoons cocoa powder • 1 teaspoon baking powder • 1/2teaspoon baking soda • 1/2teaspoon salt • 1 egg • 1 cup buttermilk • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted, plus additional for garnish • 1 ½ teaspoons vanilla extract • 30-40 drops red food coloring • nonstick cooking spray • syrup, for garnish • powdered sugar, for garnish • raspberries, for garnish

INSTRUCTIONS 1. In large bowl, whisk flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda and salt.

2. In medium bowl, whisk egg. Add buttermilk, 2 tablespoons butter, vanilla extract and food coloring; whisk until combined.

3. Add wet ingredients to dry ingredients and stir to combine.

4. Spray heart-shaped cookie cutter

with nonstick cooking spray and place in skillet. Add enough batter to fill heart. Cook 2 minutes. Remove heart cutter. Flip pancake and cook 1 minute.

5. Serve with butter, syrup, powdered sugar and raspberries.

Note: If mixture is too thick, add water until desired consistency is reached.

Donald Erwin Hines

Joe Edgar Bishop

Donald Erwin Hines, 77, of Chester, Virginia, passed away on February 9, 2022.

Born in Smithfield, North Carolina, he was the son of the late Floyd Derward and Louie Pearl Hines. He is survived by his devoted wife of 40 years, Patricia Storey Hines; a son, Joshua Robert Hines (Erica); and a daughter, Katherine Hines Nowak (Benjamin); grandchildren, Silas Hines, Amelia Hines, Anna Nowak, and Elizabeth Nowak. He is also survived by loving siblings, Judy Gail Flowers, Evelyn Dell Lundy, and Charles Derward Hines. He is missed by nieces, nephews, cousins, and special family friends. In 2000, Don was inducted into the Hall of Fame at North Carolina Wesleyan for his outstanding performance on the basketball court. His passion for sports was unwavering throughout his life. Don shared his love of history with students as a teacher for 11 years before attending law school at the University of Richmond. He served as a prosecutor in the Office of the Commonwealth’s Attorney in Chesterfield County. He continued his legal career in private practice until retiring in 2003 after a stroke. Don lived his last twenty years with the same unwavering grit and determination that helped him overcome all of life’s obstacles. Don’s love of music was central to his life, and he shared this love with his family. He inspired the same love in his children, shuttling them to many practices and performances. Don made sure that music was the highlight of family gatherings with perfect picks from his extensive music collection to an impromptu concert from his beloved grandchildren.

Margaret Toal, 71, of Chester, VA, died February 8, 2022. Born and raised in New York City, she was preceded in death by her parents, John J. Mahoney and Frances Ruiz D’Amico; stepfather, Rocco D’Amico; and grandson, Aidan Harrington.

She is survived by her husband of 48 years, Michael J. Toal; daughters, Margaret (Paul) and Maureen (Jeff); and grandchildren Brendan, Connor, and Savannah. Margaret graduated from Felician College and then received her Master’s Degree in Education from New Jersey City University. She enjoyed teaching middle school and special education for many years in Union City, New Jersey and continued teaching in Germany after relocating with Michael. As a military wife, she also taught soldiers wishing to further their careers. Michael and Margaret continued relocating throughout the world over the next 30 years. Some of Margaret’s favorite places include Schofield Barracks, Hawaii; Newport, Rhode Island; Okinawa, Japan; Athens, Greece; and Southport, North Carolina. In each place she lived, Margaret was active in her community and spent countless hours volunteering. She was quick to make friends, hosted many parties and dinners, and enjoyed being the gathering house for neighborhood children. After settling in Chester, Margaret continued to travel the world until the last couple of years. Margaret filled the house with love, dancing, music, fresh homemade meals (along with the smell of garlic), a love for education, and plenty of hugs and kisses.

CWO (retired) Joe Edgar Bishop, 84, passed away peacefully on February 7, 2022. He was born in Lynchburg, Virginia to Clifton and Mary “Coconut” Bishop, and attended Norview High School graduating class of 1956. A career Army officer, Mr. Bishop served three combat tours in Vietnam and was awarded three Bronze Stars, one for valor. His military assignments include Germany, Thailand, Alaska, North Carolina, Alabama, Colorado, and Virginia.

Mr. Bishop retired and settled in the Prince George County, Virginia area. He is survived by his beloved wife, Marilynn Bishop; brother, James Bishop; daughters, Anita, Glenda, Pamela, Kimberly, and Huong; son, Joe; numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews, and extended family. He was a devoted father, husband, son, brother, friend and American, and will be missed by all.

Preceded in death by first husband, Calvin Allen Faris; and siblings, James Poarch, Ethel Winfield, Hattie Duncan, Christine Hoell, John Poarch, William Poarch, and Barner Poarch. A longtime member of First United Methodist Church and as of late, Abundant Life Pentecostal Holiness Church. Retired from Firestone with 25+ years of service. After Firestone, worked several years at Walmart in the jewelry department and considered the most brilliant gem within the store. Dedicated her life to the service of God, family and community. Clarence Edward Walker, Sr., 88, of Chesterfield, VA, went to be with his Lord and Savior on Saturday, February 5, 2022. Born in Chesterfield, VA, he was the son of the late Clarence McKeever and Mary Ruth Moore Walker; and was also preceded in death by his loving wife of 61 years, Janice P. Walker; four brothers; and three sisters.

Ed was a United States Navy veteran having faithfully served his country from 1950 to 1961. He had retired from Brown and Williamson Tobacco Company in Petersburg as a machinist, and later became Supervisor of the Machine Shop. After his retirement, he went on to own and operate Ed’s Repair Shop out of his home in Chesterfield County. He was a member of the Crater Road Antique Car Club and the Retreads International Motorcycle Club. He was a faithful member of Matoaca Baptist Church where he had served as a Deacon. Mr. Walker is survived by his son, Eddie Walker, Jr. (Juanita); two daughters, Arie Ackerman (Larry) and Pam Vaughan (Red); six grandchildren, Kerri (Shane), Tracey (Mike), Lauren (Eric), Trey (Genevieve) Briley (Weston) and McKeever; seven great-grandchildren; one brother, James Walker; two sisters, Louise Perkinson and Brenda Wilson (Charles); and numerous nieces and nephews.

Born in Wise County, VA, he was the son of the late Corliss Back, Sr. and Anna Davis Back. Corliss Back, Jr. served his country in the United States Air Force. He went on to work as an electrician for many years until his retirement.

He enjoyed living life to the fullest, and he loved his family dearly. He was born on September 1, 1936 in the Woodlawn area of Prince George, Virginia to the late Rufus Aaron and Julia Koren Rayner. He lived his entire life in the Prince George/Hopewell area. Fondly known as PawPaw or Pops, Mr. Rayner was a beloved father, grandfather, husband, and brother. He was a life-long member of Nazareth Lutheran Church and was an electrician at Honeywell until his retirement. He enjoyed spending time with his family, fishing, hunting, and tending to his renowned tomato and cucumber garden. The rest of the time, he could be found crafting or fixing even the most challenging mechanical project in his workshop. He was the man to call when you needed to have something built or repaired. He was known for sneaking a treat to his grandchildren and great-grandchildren - and more often than not enjoying a treat himself. Michael gave his life to Christ as a young adult and later was ordained as a Minister at Love and Hope Christian Church, where he served under the leadership of Pastor William Watson III. Michael was educated in the Newport News Public School System and later earned a Bachelors’s and Master’s Degree in Counseling from the University of Arizona Global Campus. Michael worked various jobs but had recently accepted employment with the Hampton-Newport News Community Services Board as a Peer Support Specialist.

Michael was always a quiet, gentle spirit. He had a passion for learning and loved to read.

He loved technology and enjoyed staying connected with family and friends near and far on social media. He was the Washington Redskin’s #1 fan and he made sure everyone knew it. He loved to laugh, loved to talk about politics and current events. and most importantly and nearest to his heart, he loved GOD. Michael had a servant’s heart. He was a caregiver for several relatives throughout the years, helping them in their last days. He ministered to friends and family and was a true witness to the goodness of God. Michael did not have any offspring but he loved his nieces, nephews, and God’s Children as if they were his own. He will be sorely missed.

Rene was born on December 31, 1987, at 11:25 am. A beautiful baby girl from day one who weighed 6 lbs 4 oz. She graduated from Rutherford High School in Panama City, Florida, and received her Associates Degree from John Tyler Community College.

In her junior and high school years, Rene played soccer, volleyball, basketball, softball, ran track and even tried tennis once.

She was very popular in high school and carried those friendships for years, which is evident by some of her high school classmates who have traveled here today from across the country. Rene loved life, her family, and her friends. She loved her animals, dogs, K and Blue and Sugar, the cat too. Her kind-hearted spirit was so infectious and she was the most caring, kind, and sweetest person you would ever want to meet. Her laugh would make you laugh. Her smile would make you smile. She had a heart of gold, she never met a stranger, and she believed that there was good in everyone she met.

Rene was preceded in death by her maternal grandmother, Margaret Pauline Dorsey; paternal grandfather, Roosevelt Carter, and her uncle, Joey Carter.

Rene leaves to love and cherish her memories a host of family members that are spread across the country: her mother, Evelyn Dorsey; her father, Christopher T. Former President Donald Trump said that if he wins the presidency again, his first executive action will be to restart construction of the wall on the southern U.S. border.

Trump told former top White House aide Kash Patel, host of EpochTV’s “Kash’s Corner,” that completing the wall would have a significance beyond domestic policy, because it would project an image of strength to China’s Xi Jinping and other world leaders.

“When [Xi] sees millions of people pouring into our country, he loses respect for our country,” Trump said.

“When he and Putin and Kim Jong Un and Iran’s leaders, when they’re watching millions of people walk into our country ... they lose respect.”

The comments were part of an exclusive interview the former president gave to EpochTV on Jan. 31, during which he discussed a wide range of topics, including the ongoing investigation by special counsel John Durham, Beijing’s potential occupation of the Bagram Airfield following the United States’ pullout from Afghanistan, and why he believes COVID-19 mandates should be lifted.

Trump lamented that the United States now resembles a communist nation under his successor, pointing to rampant inflation, diminishing freedoms, and the porous U.S.–Mexico border.

“They’re destroying our country. They’re making us a different country. We’re becoming like a socialist or a communist state,” he said.

“Why [would they] want to have a weak military? Why would they want to have high interest rates and higher taxes? And why would they want to have no border?

“Why would they want to have no voter ID, for example, or sanctuary cities that take care of criminals? All of these things—defund the police? Why do they want to defund our police?

“It can’t possibly be good. So either they’re stupid, which I don’t think they are, or they hate our country.”

COVID-19 Mandates

Trump also said that mandates related to COVID-19 are wrong and should be rescinded.

“We have to end the mandates. ... They have to be ended. They shouldn’t have started,” Trump said.

Under Trump, the federal government didn’t impose vaccine or mask mandates, but some states, including California, and counties required the face coverings.

Under President Joe Biden, many jurisdictions began requiring COVID-19 vaccines to dine out, attend concerts, and even work. Biden ordered the military, federal contractors, agencies in his administration, health care workers, and all Americans who work at companies with 100 or more employees to get vaccinated.

While all of the mandates have been challenged and some blocked by courts, mask mandates have largely survived legal challenges.

Trump told The Epoch Times that Biden, who campaigned on a promise to “defeat the virus,” has done “such a horrible job” in managing the pandemic.

“It’s like they don’t know what the hell they’re doing. He came in [saying], ‘I’m going to solve COVID.’ They had more [deaths] in his year. And that’s after everything that we developed—therapeutics, vaccines, everything,” he said.

Deaths attributed to COVID-19 were higher in 2021 than in 2020, and new case records were set in many areas in late 2021 or in January.

The Republican didn’t force lockdowns early on in the pandemic, but his COVID advisers, Dr. Anthony Fauci and Dr. Deborah Birx, recommended that people stay home, and many states forced so-called nonessential businesses to be shuttered.

Trump eventually diverged from top health officials and urged the reopening of closed areas, famously declaring the “cure” shouldn’t be worse than COVID-19 itself.

Lockdowns had little to no effect on COVID-19 mortality, a metaanalysis of 24 studies concluded.

Bagram Airfield

Trump says the United States should have never abandoned the Bagram Airfield in Afghanistan last year, given its strategic proximity to China.

“How can you lose Bagram?” he asked during the interview, before adding, “China is going to have Bagram.”

Bagram, the largest airfield in Afghanistan, was the heart of U.S. military power in Afghanistan for nearly two decades before it was taken over by the Taliban last year.

One of the construction projects completed by the United States at the airfield is a 12,000-foot (3,660 meter) runway, which opened in 2016 at the cost of $68 million. The airbase is about a one-hour drive from the Afghan capital of Kabul.

The U.S. airfield was determined by the Pentagon to be neither tactically nor operationally necessary, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Gen. Mark Milley told a congressional hearing in late June 2021.

Less than two weeks later, the U.S. military left the airfield. What ensued was the widely criticized chaotic U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan in mid-August.

A recent report by the Federation of American Scientists (FAS) revealed that China has been secretly building three missile silo fields near Yumen, Hami, and Orodos in western China, the region that neighbors Afghanistan.

The report concluded that China is engaging in an “unprecedented nuclear buildup,” and China’s total Intercontinental ballistic missile force “could potentially exceed that of either Russia and the United States in the foreseeable future.”

Dan Steiner, a retired U.S. Air Force colonel and global strategist, previously told The Epoch Times that keeping Bagram airfield, given its proximity to China, would have given the United States a “strategic advantage” in contending with threats posed by Beijing.

“The way they withdrew from Afghanistan was like we were the ‘gang that couldn’t shoot straight,’” Trump said. “I think it’s the most embarrassing day or week in the history of our country.”

In the aftermath of the Taliban’s swift takeover of Kabul, the Chinese regime seized on the event to embark on an aggressive propaganda campaign to label the United States as an unreliable ally and delegitimize U.S. democracy.

Attorney General William Barr assigned Durham on May 13, 2019, to investigate the origins of the FBI’s investigation of the Trump campaign, which was codenamed Crossfire Hurricane. In October 2020, with the presidential election approaching, Barr designated Durham as a special counsel to protect the criminal investigation in case of a change of administration in the White House in 2021.

Durham secured the first guilty plea in August 2020, prior to his appointment as a special counsel. Former FBI assistant general counsel Kevin Clinesmith admitted to forging an email used to prepare an application to surveil former Trump campaign foreign policy adviser Carter Page. Clinesmith was sentenced to probation for a single charge of making false statements related to the forgery.

In September and November last year, Durham brought indictments against Russian national Igor Danchenko, the primary source of the infamous Steele dossier, and Michael Sussmann, an attorney for Hillary Clinton’s 2016 presidential campaign.

Trump has previously expressed frustration with the pace of Durham’s investigation. In March last year, he issued a statement saying: “Where’s Durham? Is he a living, breathing human being? Will there ever be a Durham report?”

The former president told Epoch TV he still wishes the investigation would move faster.

“I wish it were faster,” Trump said. “It is really the crime of the century and changed everything, including the election.”

Some of the earliest evidence of misconduct in the Crossfire Hurricane investigation emerged in a report prepared by the Republican-led House Intelligence Committee in early 2018.

Later, an internal inquiry by the Department of Justice Office of Inspector General yielded two significant reports. Inspector General Michael Horowitz ultimately concluded that, despite errors in the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court applications to spy on former Trump campaign aide Carter Page, the FBI opened the investigation of the Trump campaign on lawful grounds. Durham publicly disagreed with that finding, issuing a formal statement in December 2019 explaining that his investigation reached beyond the DOJ and its components.

Recent court filings by Durham in the Sussmann case show that Horowitz withheld vital evidence from the special counsel in the Sussmann prosecution and the criminal leak investigation of former FBI General Counsel James Baker. According to the filings, Horowitz’s office failed to disclose that it was in possession of two of Baker’s cellphones.

Olympic Venues ‘Right Alongside Prison Camps’: Torture, Detention Occurring Just Miles Away From Beijing Games EVA FU

NEW YORK—The opening ceremony of the Beijing Winter Olympic Games contained all the pageantry that one might expect from an authoritarian regime eager to burnish its global image: Hundreds of children holding dove-shaped props formed the shape of a heart while they danced in a star-lit stadium as green and white fireworks spelled out the word “spring” overhead, a reference to the Lunar New Year celebration.

“One world, one family,” so read the slogan displayed to spectators in the partially filled “Bird’s Nest” National Stadium on Jan. 4, echoing a call for unity that the Chinese regime has often repeated on the world stage over the past few years.

With this glitzy show, the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) is trying to divert the world’s attention from much grimmer realities, including the detention, torture, and death taking place mere miles away from Olympic venues, according to activists.

One detainee was so emaciated that she was taken home on a stretcher and slapped with a 2 1/2-year sentence days later. Another detainee spent his entire 30s in prison, only to receive another long sentence years later. A third one lost her husband to persecution and is now behind the bars herself.

All three became regime targets merely for persisting in practicing their faith.

Their stories and others were featured in an interactive map released on Feb. 4, the same day that Beijing became the world’s first city to host both the Summer and Winter Games. The map, developed by the Falun Dafa Information Center, spotlighted more than a dozen “persecution hotspots” in and around Beijing, where adherents of the persecuted faith group Falun

Gong are languishing for not surrendering their beliefs.

It’s the first comprehensive map of its kind to allow “a glimpse inside the places the Chinese Communist Party does not want you to see,” according to the New York-based human rights group.

The “proximity of Olympic glory to terrible human suffering highlights the tragic and often deceptive rule of the Chinese Communist Party,” said Erping Zhang, spokesperson for the Falun Dafa Information Center.

“There is no other regime on earth that has the audacity, and international clout, to host the Games while simultaneously detaining such large numbers of prisoners of conscience in settings ripe with abuse and torture,” he said in a statement.

Olympic Venues Alongside Prison Camps

Adherents of Falun Gong have been subjected to more than two decades of persecution under the communist regime, which deemed the group a threat after the practice exploded in popularity during the 1990s. An estimated 70 million to 100 million people were practicing Falun Gong by the end of that decade, according to estimates at the time.

A half-dozen torture facilities that hold Falun Gong detainees are roughly 10 to 20 miles away from Beijing’s major Olympic venues, from the National Stadium to the National Speed Skating Oval, where the speed skating competition commenced on Feb. 5.

“You could literally watch the speed skating Olympic event, walk out the door from the oval, and walk 14 miles due, east and you are at a prison camp where people are being incarcerated—at least one case for nine years—for their faith in Falun Gong,” Levi Browde, executive director of Falun Dafa Information

Center, told The Epoch Times.

It took a month for researchers to verify the details and complete the map. Many of the facilities have both a public and private name and even two addresses to avoid outside scrutiny. Some of them, serving concurrently as labor camps, have adopted a secondary name as a cover for their slave labor business, according to the researchers.

Despite his years of research into the persecution campaign, seeing the facilities visually was still striking, according to Browde.

“That’s sort of like going to see Yankee Stadium and walking down to somewhere in Central Park, where there’s a prison camp,” he said.

Long Years Behind the Bars

The detainee that Browde cited was 52-year-old Shi Shaoping, who holds a master’s degree from the photochemical institute at the country’s lead national scientific institution, the Chinese Academy of Sciences.

While Shi was arrested at his home in November 2019, his family didn’t hear any news about his whereabouts until April 2021. That’s when police notified them of Shi’s nine-year sentence at the Beijing No. 2 Prison, a facility for death-row inmates and those serving life sentences.

Shi had already served a 10year prison sentence because of his faith prior to this arrest.

At Qianjin Prison, which also is on the interactive map, Shi was made to sit motionless on a small stool for up to 20 hours daily over a period of a few years, according to Minghui.org, a U.S.-based clearinghouse for the persecution of Falun Gong in China. On the coldest winter days, guards would leave the window open, causing Shi’s body to shiver. He was once barred from using the restroom for an entire month.

Sixteen miles away from the same skating venue is the Beijing Women’s Prison, where artist Xu Na was held until last month.

Months before the Beijing Summer Olympic Games in 2008, police arrested Xu and her husband Yu Zhou during an “Olympic check,” after discovering Falun Gong books in their car. Yu, a folk singer and musician, died in detention 11 days later, on the eve of Chinese New Year. Xu subsequently spent three years in detention.

About 22 miles northwest of National Stadium, the Changping District Detention Center held Wang Chaoying for distributing informational materials about Falun Gong. The 68-year-old was hospitalized three times over a six-month period between 2020 and 2021. She was sent home on a stretcher after having lost 40 pounds. Ten days later, the court delivered her verdict: a 2 1/2-year prison sentence.

Over the past two years, more than 31,000 arrests and harassment cases of adherents have taken place, according to Minghui.org. Records from the site show that about 1,800 of them were sentenced and more than 200 people have died over the same period; however, human rights experts believe the true death toll to be vastly higher because of the challenge of getting official information from China.

Disposable Chopsticks and Cotton Swabs

Thirteen miles north of the skating oval is the Beijing Juvenile Correction Facility where Liu Jiying, who escaped to New York in 2016, first crossed paths with Xu in 2001, Liu told The Epoch Times. The facility was actually an underground forced labor facility, where they became practically slave laborers. Both were later transferred to Beijing Women’s Prison, then still

under construction. Liu was serving an eight-year jail term, while Xu was serving a fiveyear sentence.

Each prison unit sourced its own “jobs.” Xu was given some of the harshest labor, including sewing shoe soles, which often kept her up until 2 a.m.

Liu made sweaters and scarfs for export, stitched lacings on ski socks, and assembled stamp albums. More often, she would need to package about 10,000 disposable chopsticks each day. There would be no sleep until the allotted quota was met. Talking wasn’t allowed, but once, Liu flashed a thumbs-up to Xu to cheer her up.

The hygiene situation on the production floor was often deplorable, according to Liu, now 67. The chopsticks sometimes came with shoe prints on them. When placing cotton swabs—another product she had to package—into plastic bags at the Beijing Women’s Prison, small insects would crawl out. The swabs would be labeled as “disinfected,” she said.

It was while at these facilities that Liu vowed never to use disposable chopsticks again.

“When people take the chopsticks to eat, they’d assume those are clean. Who would examine them that closely?” she said.

Detained Again

On Jan 14, three weeks ahead of the Winter Games, Xu was handed another eight-year prison term for her role in supplying photos to The Epoch Times that documented the early months of the pandemic. While following Xu’s case from New York, Liu said the news gave her inexplicable sadness.

“She already served eight years, now’s another eight,” she said.

Liu knows of others who have fared even worse: One of her friends, who didn’t cave in to authorities’ pressure to renounce her beliefs, served 12 years. Her son was 9 months old when she was jailed. When the woman was freed, the child didn’t recognize her as his mother.

“What did we do? I didn’t do anything illegal. What right do they have to imprison me for eight years?” Liu said. “It is they who are breaking the law.”

She had once posed the same questions at an arraignment hearing in 2016.

“You are committing a crime,” she told authorities.

They, in turn, “said not a word.”

Liu lost her mother shortly after her release in 2016. The woman had fallen unconscious following Liu’s arrest and a house raid.

“My mother didn’t have to die,” she said.

The tragedies traversing two Beijing Olympics should make plain to the international community that the regime hasn’t changed at all, Browde said.

“Too often, they would look at the high rise buildings and all the Starbucks around Beijing, and they think, ‘Oh, this is the new China,’” he said.

“They just think it’s better and more civilized.

“Seeing Olympic venues right alongside prison camps ... where people are incarcerated and tortured because of their faith makes the deception and the hypocrisy of the CCP very clear.”
