AND an exciting HIGH FIVE from Director Maggie!
Summer is the perfect time to head outside and soak up everything Lincoln’s parks have to offer. July gives us an extra reason to celebrate—it’s National Parks and Recreation Month!
A huge shoutout to every member of the Lincoln Parks and Recreation team. All 844 staff members—including more than 600 seasonal workers and nearly 250 aquatics team members—help make our parks, pools, trails, and programs come alive. Their hard work is a big part of what makes Lincoln such a vibrant place to live, play, and explore.
We invite you to get out and enjoy the seasonal splendor in our parks. Check out a newly renovated playground, cool off at a neighborhood pool, or join a game on one of our ballfields. Summer in Lincoln has a little bit of everything, and a whole lot of fun.
Thank you for your continued support of our parks and recreation programs. We can’t wait to see you out enjoying the sunshine, fresh air, and all the beauty summer brings!
Maggie Stuckey-Ross, Director Lincoln Parks and Recreation

“ This is a great opportunity for kids in Lincoln and the surrounding areas to be active, have fun, and showcase their skills. Our goal is simple – to create a positive experience that helps kids enjoy being active and spark an interest in track and field Thanks to every participant and parent, staff member, and volunteer that assisted with the success of another fun event."
- Wade Noll, Youth Sports Coordinator

SUMMER PROGRAMS?
Summer programming has been available for several years, but this year the center is trying new approaches to give youth more say in choosing the clubs that interest them. Staff are excited about the possibilities. With over 50 years of combined experience, the team is wellprepared to support participants throughout the summer.
Families can still register for select summer day camps!
Summer Day Camp programs offer a traditional full day camp experience for children who have completed grades K–5. Campers take part in a mix of indoor and outdoor activities, including crafts, games, weekly themes, and group experiences that build creativity, confidence, teamwork, and summer exploration.
Air Park, Belmont, McPhee sites have spots available throughout summer.
Nature Camp
Campers experience summer adventures at Pioneers Park Nature Center through outdoor exploration, nature play and hands on learning in age appropriate camp sessions. More info at lincoln.ne.gov/DayCamps

Staff at the "F" Street Community Center shared insights about the "F" Street Youth Program (FYP) and what families can expect from this summer’s newest camp lineup. From club activities to field trips and daily drop-in time, the team explained how they are creating a fun, flexible, and welcoming space for middle schoolers all summer long.
The "F" Street Youth Program, otherwise known as "FYP", is taking place for nine weeks this summer at "F" Street Community Center, 1225 "F" Street. We have lots of great clubbased activities that youth entering sixth through ninth grade can be a part of.
Each day for two hours there will be different clubs offered that students will select from, as well as the use of our Teen Zone and Gym. Participants enjoy swimming twice a week and going on additional optional field trips
"It's a great mix of activities that are physical, more relaxed and chill, with plenty of time to hang with friends. There's something for everyone this summer," said Center Director Chris Boden. "This flexible, affordable, youth‑driven summer program is shaping up to be a great experience for all participants."
The weekday program runs from 1 to 3 p.m. After that, youth may stay for drop - in time until 8 p.m. Dinner will be served at 5:30 p.m., and snacks will be offered as well. Registration includes clubs, swimming, and field trips.
CLUBS!
There will be no shortage of clubs this year. Each day, two or more clubs will be offered, including Weightlifting Club, Sports Club, and Content Crew Club. One specialty option, Chop It Up Club, will give campers the chance to cook with chefs from local restaurants.
The Make a Difference Club will introduce youth to service activities and provide opportunities to participate in meaningful community projects. Staff plan to gather input from participants about causes they care about while also offering plenty of ideas for serving the community, from helping at a soup kitchen to supporting local schools.
Yacht Club will bring STEM fun to the forefront as youth design and build sturdy boats using everyday materials. After a summer of construction, they will test their creations at a local pool to see how well they float. Additional club offerings include Crafternoon Club (arts and crafts), Green Thumb Club (gardening), Natural Hair Club, and both Boys Club and Girls Club. These are just a few highlights from the full club lineup.
Monday Madness will add even more fun with wacky, high - energy games and activities. Participants can expect messy Twister, tie-dye shirts, karaoke, and more.
REGISTRATION INFORMATION
Registration for FYP is simple and available online at Lincoln.ne.gov/CivicRec. Families may also call 402- 441-7951 for more details. Youth may attend as many weeks as they are able. There is a one - time $25 registration fee, followed by a $5 weekly camp fee. A youth attending all summer would pay just $75 in weekly fees. Financial support is available for those who qualify. Lincoln Parks and Recreation has been serving Irving Middle School families after school since March 28, 1977. Our facility is located at door 7 on the west end of the school. Much has changed in the past 49 years, and we believe supervised, safe, fun, and meaningful after school activities are as important as ever for middle school students. Some students visit the rec. center simply because they need a place to go after school; however, our staff is intentional about making the center "more than just a place to go." After school staff do this by focusing on a positive environment, supportive relationships, and constructive programs. *Open to current Irving students only ** Please note: There will not be a program on recognized city holidays and election days.

One of the reasons people choose to live in Lincoln is our exceptional quality of life. For decades, residents have invested in the parks, trails, and natural areas that make our community a standout place to call home. That legacy continues with the newest addition to the Prairie Corridor: The Prairie Corridor Link, a nearly 100-acre property that brings us one step closer to creating a continuous stretch of protected tallgrass prairie from Pioneers Park Nature Center to Spring Creek Prairie Audubon Center.
The vision for the Prairie Corridor dates back to 1948, when parks along the Haines Branch of Salt Creek were first included in the City and County Comprehensive Plan. The modern effort took shape in 2010 under the leadership of Mayor Chris Beutler and a group of passionate community members who saw an opportunity to restore prairie, expand outdoor recreation, and preserve a defining Nebraska landscape.
Today, that vision is becoming reality. Nearly 70% of the trail corridor has been secured, 25% of the trail has been built, and the long-term plan calls for a 14.5-mile multiuse trail winding through more than 7,400 acres of conserved prairie. University of Nebraska–Lincoln research projects that, once complete, the corridor will generate millions of dollars in annual economic activity—proof that investments in natural amenities strengthen both our quality of life and our local economy.
The newly acquired Prairie Corridor Link carries a rich history. Once the Hamilton Queen homestead—the first homestead in the Denton Precinct—the land is believed to have hosted early pioneer routes, including a “Pioneer Trail” and a Centennial Bridge.
Though the wagon ruts have yet to be found, the landscape still tells a powerful story. Sandstone and limestone outcroppings, native bur oak groves, ponds, and sweeping views of the Capitol make this property a uniquely beautiful stretch of prairie. Its distinctive soils offer rare opportunities to restore saline wetlands, one of Nebraska’s most endangered natural features.
Restoration is already underway. Staff have begun the removal of fencing, invasive plants, and scrub trees from the property. Native grasses and wildflowers have been replanted. Work is beginning to map the future trail route, which will enter at the northeast corner, meander through rolling prairie, and exit to the west. Over time, this landscape will become a place for families to hike, students to learn about Nebraska’s natural history, and visitors to experience one of the few remaining tallgrass prairie ecosystems in the world.
The Prairie Corridor is also part of a much larger network of greenways that stretch across Lincoln and beyond—from our city parks to the Mopac Trail and the Homestead Trail. Eventually, this site will form a seamless connection to Spring Creek Prairie Audubon Center, tying together urban and rural landscapes and strengthening our shared relationship with the land.
Learn more about the Prairie Corridor on Haines Branch at SolidagoConservancy.org or PrairieCorridor.org.
Inset photo above (L to R): Lincoln Parks and Recreation Director Maggie Stuckey‑Ross, Lincoln Mayor Leirion Gaylor Baird, Solidago Conservancy Executive Director Nicole Fleck‑Tooze, and Lower Platte South Natural Resources District General Manager David Potter.
This milestone is possible thanks to the partnership of the Lower Platte South Natural Resources District, Solidago Conservancy, the Lincoln Parks Foundation, Spring Creek Prairie Audubon Center, private landowners, and many City of Lincoln staff who have advanced the work for years.

Older adults in Lincoln now have more opportunities to stay active and connected through low cost fitness and wellness classes offered in neighborhood recreation centers. The Healthy Living Outreach partnership between the Parks and Recreation Department and the YMCA of Lincoln continues to grow after its first year, bringing inclusive programming directly to residents at Air Park Community Center and Easterday Recreation Center. Residents helped shape the program through focus groups, surveys and conversations at senior centers and neighborhood coffee groups. Their input guided class schedules, formats and pricing to make sessions easier to attend and better aligned with daily routines. The result is a model that meets people

where they are and reflects what older adults said they wanted most: welcoming classes close to home, with activities that support long term mobility and social connection.
The partnership blends YMCA instructors and evidence based wellness programs with the trusted neighborhood spaces offered by Parks and Recreation. Support from the Nebraska Presbyterian Foundation has helped expand access for residents who may have limited fitness options in their immediate area. Together, the organizations have built a program that emphasizes belonging as much as physical activity.
Participation continues to grow. In 2025, 52 residents attended classes across participating sites. The goal for
the coming year is to reach at least 75 participants as interest increases and new 12 week sessions take shape. Staff are also pursuing additional grants to ensure long term sustainability at Air Park and Easterday.
Fit for Life Strength and Stretch remains one of the most popular offerings. The class uses land and chair based movements to support strength, balance and flexibility for daily living. It is designed to be low impact and accessible for residents of all abilities.
New sessions for spring and summer will be posted in CivicRec as they open for registration. Residents can review upcoming dates and class details by visiting CivicRec or stopping by their local center.
Residents have many ways to stay active at community centers and in neighborhood parks. These opportunities support daily movement, social connection and overall wellness. Schedules and details are available online.

WED Easterday 5:30 - 6:15 p.m.

Every four years, athletes with intellectual disabilities from all 50 states unite to compete at the national level in the Special Olympics USA Games. This year, from June 20-26, Minneapolis–Saint Paul, Minnesota hosted 3,000 amazing athletes, 1,500 dedicated coaches, 10,000 gracious volunteers, and 75,000 excited fans! Far more than an athletic competition - USA Games fosters inclusion, personal development, and community change.
Making the 2026 USA Games even more electrifying are the three awesome Lincoln Shooting Star athletes who competed at the Games! Dexter Drbal, Pat McCracken, and Jarred Smith were selected to join Special Olympics Nebraska’s flag football team!
These determined athletes’ journey to the 2026 USA Games started two years ago when Special Olympics Nebraska (SONE) asked qualified, competitive athletes from across Nebraska to submit detailed applications highlighting their experience, expertise, commitment, and prowess. All applications received were vetted and taken to SONE's Committee of Athletes, Board Members, and Sport Staff to put together the Nebraska 2026 teams.
In Summer of 2025, the 2026 Nebraska teams were officially selected, and athletes started training in their respective sports with their team from across the state. SONE athletes are competing at the 2026 USA Games in: Track and Field, Unified Soccer, Flag Football, Bocce, Bowling, Powerlifting, and Tennis.

Families looking for early childhood programs that blend outdoor learning with school readiness skills are encouraged to enroll now for fall preschool. Registration is open for the 2026-2027 year in Lincoln Parks and Recreation’s Little Sprouts Preschool at Calvert Recreation Center and Nature Preschool at Pioneers Park Nature Center. Families may register online at lincoln.ne.gov/CivicRec.
Both programs use a play based curriculum rooted in hands-on exploration. At Little Sprouts, children ages 3 to 5 spend their days discovering the natural world in an urban setting. They learn through activities that spark creativity, problem solving and early literacy. Recent projects have included observing birds in the park, examining real nests and comparing how they are built. Children created their own nests with craft materials, painted art and dug in the dirt for worms.
At Nature Center Preschool, children learn outdoors year round through hiking, climbing, digging and investigating the natural spaces at Pioneers Park. In March, students spent several weeks studying eggs and the animals that hatch from them, exploring different nest materials and practicing bird identification outdoors using a bird song identifier. They observed eggs closely in the classroom, monitored their development and later held newly hatched chicks
Both programs offer half day schedules for children ages 3 to 5 and are recognized by Nebraska Step Up to Quality for their commitment to high quality early childhood education. This designation means the programs exceed state licensing requirements to better support young learners and prepare them for success in kindergarten and beyond.
Families seeking more information may contact the preschool director at 402-441-7895 or visit lincoln.ne.gov/preschool. Enrollment is limited, and early registration is encouraged. Information about financial assistance is available at lincoln.ne.gov/Scholarships.

We recognize that some citizens like to have options and be involved in determining the future of public trees near their homes. In that spirit, we are providing an option for those who would like to “adopt” an ash tree in the right-of-way by providing ongoing chemical treatment to minimize damage by Emerald Ash Borer.
Learn more about the program & download the permit application at trees.lincoln.ne.gov.
If a property owner wants to have a city tree treated for anything, not just EAB, an “Application for Permit to Treat” is required as directed by Municipal Code 12.20.040.
ARE YOU A MEMBER OF A NA/HOA* WITH ASH STREET TREES?
If yes, contact Adam Klingenberg at aklingenberg@lincoln.ne.gov or 402-441-8269 for information on City assistance.

The Lincoln Parks and Recreation Department offers a costshare assistance program to property owners in Lincoln who desire to purchase and plant a street tree(s) on the City rightof-way adjacent to their property. The $300 voucher is good toward the purchase and installation of a tree at participating local nurseries. The remaining balance of the cost of the tree and the planting of the tree will be at the homeowner’s expense. Certain conditions and requirements apply to the street tree voucher program. Call 402-441-7847, OPT. 0 for more information.

Inspired by the diversity and wide array of quilt styles throughout history, the quilt-themed sunken garden unfolds like a cherished patchwork blanket laid gently into the earth. Paths trace the seams between patterns and guide visitors through squares and diamonds of color, texture, and scent. Inspired by a recent visit to The International Quilt Museum in the summer of 2025, this year’s theme draws from both traditional and modern quilt-making throughout the 250 years of American history.

This program helps with the fulfillment of the Master Gardener and Student Community Service Credit requirements through working with the annual and perennial plantings in the city’s gardens. Learn the different aspects of Horticulture from Professional Garden Staff and then immediately apply them.
From above, the design unfolds as a vibrant fabric of community: a tapestry of heritage, artistry, and belonging. Each bed celebrates a thread in Lincoln’s diverse weave. Bright cultural plantings echoing global traditions are brought by new neighbors who share in the gathering spaces that welcome all.
At the garden’s heart lies our reflecting ponds, quiet rectangles of stillness recalling the quiltmaker’s pause between stitches. Throughout the garden, we encourage visitors to see how nature, craft, geometry, and growth are all pieces of the same human longing for harmony and beauty.

May 13 - Oct.
Public Gardens staff choose the theme and hand-illustrate every flower bed with a unique, theme-inspired design every year! This is done before the team orders or grows the plants for the season.
Volunteers will meet and greet Garden visitors providing information about the Garden history and learn about the plants in the Gardens plus provide guidance to Garden Training on June 3rd, 8 am.
