Though this year is beginning to wrap up, we still have much to celebrate. We are excited to announce that the new Air Park Community Center and Williams Branch Library is officially up and running. We also look forward to the exciting projects we announced in the last couple of months such as the AllInclusive Playground at Mahoney Park and South Haymarket Park.
The hot weather may be coming to an end, but there are still countless opportunities to have fun with Parks and Recreation. The Pioneers Park Nature Center has nature programs for everyone to enjoy both inside and out. Get a team together to join one of the many fall team sports leagues available. If sports aren't your thing, bundle up in the chilly weather and go for a stroll around one our many special spaces or trails as shown on pages 20 and 21.
Get out, be active, and have fun! We'll see you in the parks!
Anyone can report city issues like graffiti, potholes, and public tree issues to the City of Lincoln on the UPLNK mobile app or UPLNK.lincoln.ne.gov.

Dedicated to promoting social inclusion through shared sports training and competition experiences, Unified Sports joins people with and without intellectual disabilities on the same team. It was inspired by a simple principle: training together and playing together is a quick path to friendship and understanding.
In Unified Sports, teams are made up of people of similar age and ability, which makes practices more fun and games more challenging and exciting for all. Having sports in common is just one more way that preconceptions and false ideas are swept away.
Our opponent is intolerance. Only shoulder-to-shoulder, as teammates together, can we defeat it. Join and take your place alongside the rest of our global game-changers today.
The Lincoln Shooting Stars team offers opportunities for Unified Sports in basketball, bocce, bowling, flag football, golf, soccer, swimming, track, and volleyball. If you are interested in participating as a Unified Partner in any of these sports, we would love to hear from you!

We recognize that some citizens like to have options and be involved in determining the future of public trees near their homes. In that spirit, we are providing an option for those who would like to “adopt” an ash tree in the right-of-way by providing ongoing chemical treatment to minimize damage by Emerald Ash Borer.
Learn more about the program and download the permit application at trees. lincoln.ne.gov.
If a property owner wants to have a city tree treated for anything, not just EAB, an "Application for Permit to Treat" is required as directed by Municipal Code 12.20.040.

PROGRAM
The City of Lincoln received grant funding from the USDA Forest Service/Nebraska Forest Service to help low-to-moderate-income homeowners pay for the removal of ash trees and plant new trees at no cost.
For more information about the program, and to see if you qualify, please go to lincoln.ne.gov/TreeRemovalGrant.
Lincoln has held a Tree City U.S.A. designation for almost 5 decades and we are proud to proclaim our commitment to our thriving urban forest. Our forestry and parks staff are responsible for the City’s trees in public spaces that include parks, golf courses, trails, streets, and medians. Trees are living assets that increase the resiliency and sustainability of our community for generations to come. Forestry and parks staff preserve and grow our community forest by removing damaged or diseased trees, planting new native and diverse species, and maintaining all trees in our public spaces. Not only does our community forest showcase many shades of colors throughout the seasons, it also provides our City with social, environmental and economic benefits for all. Trees lower heating and air conditioning costs, prevent erosion, provide wildlife habitat, reduce storm water runoff, increase property values, and make our neighborhoods more livable.
Doing its part to maintain and preserve our priceless community forest, the Lincoln Parks and Recreation Department’s Community Forestry Section is responsible for all city-owned trees. The Department is also responsible for the planting, pruning and removal of trees on public property, which includes trees in parks, in golf courses, and along our trails.
For service calls regarding public trees, call (402) 441-7847, OPT. 0.
The Lincoln Parks and Recreation Department offers a cost-share assistance program to property owners in Lincoln who desire to purchase and plant a street tree(s) on the City right-of-way adjacent to their property. The $300 voucher is good toward the purchase and installation of a tree at participating local nurseries. The remaining balance of the cost of the tree and the planting of the tree will be at the homeowner’s expense. Certain conditions and requirements apply to the street tree voucher program.
Call (402) 441-7847, OPT. 0 to submit a request for voucher, or for more information.
If yes, contact Adam Klingenberg at aklingenberg@lincoln.ne.gov or (402) 441-8269 for information on City assistance.
*Neighborhood Association (NA), Homeowner’s Association (HOA)
Every Spring and Fall Lincoln plants hundreds of trees in our public spaces. If you are looking for a volunteer planting schedule and an opportunity to plant alongside fellow tree stewards, please call (402) 441-7847, OPT. 0.
• These annual adoptive areas are great for neighborhood association groups, families, organizations, or corporations who wish to provide care to public spaces and landscape plantings throughout Lincoln. Most areas require approximately 1-2 hours a week throughout the growing season. On-site recognition is provided.
SWIM & DIVE TEAMS
• Assist the swim or dive team coach with practice, run drills, develop skills, supervise practice. Weekly swim/dive meets also need volunteers.
• Lincoln Parks and Recreation’s Lincoln Shooting Stars Special Olympics team practices for competition in 10 sports. Program is open to athletes ages 8 and older. We also offer the Young Athletes Program for ages 2-7.
• Volunteers are needed for coach assistants, Unified Partners, practice assistants and general supervision. Year-round opportunities at various locations. Call (402) 441-7877.
