There has always been an art to esthetics. The way we use our hands, read the skin, build trust with our clients, and create an experience that makes someone feel truly cared for cannot be replicated by a machine. But as our industry continues to evolve, technology is giving us new ways to enhance that artistry. This month, we are exploring the intersection of technology,

innovation, and the human touch. From advanced skin analysis and intelligent devices to treatment room upgrades and new modalities, estheticians have access to more technology than ever before. And while that is exciting, it also brings an important question: How do we know what is actually worth investing in? The newest or most expensive device is not automatically the best one for your business. Technology should have a purpose.

The modern treatment room is changing. Advanced devices are becoming more sophisticated, results-driven modalities are increasingly accessible, and clients are walking into appointments more educated about technology than ever before. They know about LED, microcurrent, radiofrequency, nano-infusion, microchanneling, oxygen therapy, and countless other treatments they have discovered online.

High-Tech, High-Touch
Yet, as the treatment room becomes more advanced, something else is becoming equally valuable: the human experience.Clients may come in looking for results, but they also want to feel cared for. They want the hour they spend in the treatment room to feel different from the rest of their day. They want an experience that allows them to disconnect, soften, and leave feeling better than when they arrived. Technology does not have to compete with that experience. When used intentionally, advanced modalities and thoughtful touch can exist beautifully within the same treatment. The future of esthetics does not have to be hightech or high-touch. It can be both.
A Device Should Never Become the Entire Experience
There is a difference between receiving a treatment and being cared for. As more devices enter the treatment room, it can become easy to build a facial around a sequence of machines. Cleanse, device, remove, apply the next modality, repeat. The treatment may be technically impressive, but the experience can begin to feel clinical. Luxury often lives in what happens between those steps. It is the warm towel placed intentionally over the skin. It is the moment of stillness before beginning. It is the scalp massage while LED is working. It is the way the esthetician transitions from one modality to another without making the client feel as though they are simply moving through a protocol. The device may produce the result the client booked for, but these details can be what they remember.
Create Ritual Around Technology
Even the most advanced treatment can feel luxurious when there is intention surrounding it.Consider the experience from the moment the client enters the treatment room. Lighting, tempera-

ture, sound, scent, linens, and even the pace of your movements communicate something before the facial begins. Instead of immediately starting the protocol, an esthetician might invite the client to take a few slow breaths. A warm compress can signal the beginning of the treatment. Gentle touch at the shoulders, scalp, or décolleté can help create a transition from the outside world into the treatment experience. Then, when technology is introduced, it feels like part of the ritual rather than an interruption to it.The same approach can be used throughout the facial. If a client is under LED for several minutes, that time can become an opportunity for scalp, hand, arm, or foot massage when appropriate. A technology-focused facial can still include lymphatic techniques, sculptural massage, aromatherapy, breathwork, or intentional moments of rest. The goal is not to add more simply for the sake of adding more. It is to con-
sider how every part of the treatment feels from the client's perspective.
Master the Art of Transition
One of the most overlooked elements of a device-heavy facial is pacing.A treatment can include exceptional technology and still feel disjointed if the client is constantly hearing equipment move, cords being adjusted, machines turning on and off, or the esthetician searching for the next product. Preparation matters. Before the client arrives, consider the entire flow of the protocol. Where will each device be positioned? What products will you need? Which modalities require preparation? What can be done while one technology is working? The smoother the transition, the more elevated the experience feels. This is especially important when com-

combine exfoliation, nano-infusion, oxygen therapy, LED, and facial massage. A client focused on visible signs of aging may benefit from a completely different combination of modalities and hands-on techniques. When treatments are built around outcomes rather than individual machines, technology becomes one tool within a larger experience. This also gives the esthetician room to customize. Not every client needs every modality at every appointment. The luxury is in having options and knowing when to use them.
The New Definition of Luxury
bining multiple modalities. Each one should have a clear purpose within the treatment. More technology does not automatically create a better facial. Sometimes one thoughtfully selected device paired with skilled hands creates a more impressive experience than five modalities used simply because they are available.
Let Touch Do What Technology Cannot
Devices can accomplish remarkable things, but they cannot replace the information exchanged through touch. An esthetician's hands can notice tension in the jaw, tightness through the neck, differences in skin texture, areas of sensitivity, or subtle changes that influence how the rest of the treatment unfolds. Touch can also create something that cannot be measured through a beforeand-after photograph. It can make a cli10

ent feel cared for.Massage, lymphatic techniques, facial sculpting, gentle holds, and other hands-on modalities can create a powerful contrast to technology. One portion of the treatment may feel precise and corrective, while another feels restorative and deeply relaxing. That contrast can become part of the luxury.Clients no longer have to choose between a facial that feels good and one designed to create visible results. The modern esthetician can build an experience that respects both.
Design Treatments Around Outcomes, Not Machines
One of the easiest ways to create a seamless high-tech, high-touch experience is to stop thinking of the device as the treatment itself. Instead, begin with the desired outcome.Perhaps the client wants brighter, more hydrated skin before an event. The protocol may
Luxury in the treatment room is changing. It is no longer defined only by expensive products, beautiful interiors, or the newest technology. Increasingly, luxury is personalization. It is expertise. It is having someone's complete attention for an hour. It is a treatment that feels considered from beginning to end.Advanced devices can absolutely be part of that experience. They can elevate results, expand treatment possibilities, and give estheticians new ways to support their clients' goals. But the most sophisticated machine in the room should never overshadow the professional using it. As technology continues to advance, the estheticians who stand out may not be those with the most devices. They may be the ones who know how to integrate technology without losing what has always made this profession special: skilled hands, thoughtful attention, and the experience of being genuinely cared for.High-tech can create impressive results. High-touch can create connection. The real luxury is knowing how to deliver both.

The New Era of Skin Analysis How Technology Is Changing the Esthetic Consultation by Aurora Solis
For decades, the esthetic consultation has relied heavily on what can be seen, felt, and learned through conversation. A magnifying lamp, trained hands, thoughtful questions, and the esthetician's own understanding of the skin have traditionally provided the foundation for creating a treatment plan. Those skills remain essential. But today, estheticians have access to an entirely new layer of information. Digital imaging systems, advanced magnification, UV photography, hydration and sebum measurements, and AI-assisted skin analysis are changing what can happen before a client ever gets onto the treatment table. Technology can reveal patterns that may be difficult to see with the naked eye, document subtle changes over time, and help

The New Era of Skin Analysis
translate what an esthetician sees into something the client can understand. The consultation is becoming more visual, measurable, and data-informed. Still, the most important piece of the analysis has not changed: the professional interpreting the information.
Beyond What We Can See
The skin tells a story, but not all of that story is immediately visible.Traditional visual analysis allows an esthetician to observe concerns such as congestion, redness, texture, dehydration, pigmentation, and visible signs of aging. Magnification can provide a closer look, while touch can offer additional information about texture, oil production, sensitivity, and overall skin condition. Newer technologies can add another dimension.Digital skin imaging may capture high-resolution photographs that allow both the esthetician and client to examine the skin more closely. UV imaging can help visualize certain pigmentation and sun-related changes that may not yet be as apparent on the surface. Other systems can assess factors such as hydration or surface oil levels. AI-assisted platforms are adding yet another layer by analyzing images and identifying visible patterns across different areas of the face. Depending on the system, the technology may help categorize concerns, organize observations, or create visual reports that can be referenced during a consultation. The benefit is not that technology suddenly understands the skin better than the esthetician. It is that the esthetician may now have more information to consider.
Turning the Consultation Into a Conversation
One of the greatest opportunities these tools provide is client education.Clients do not always see what an esthetician sees. They may know their 14

skin feels dry or that they are experiencing breakouts, but they may not understand the difference between dryness and dehydration, why congestion repeatedly appears in certain areas, or why correcting a concern may require a series of treatments rather than one appointment. Visual technology can make these conversations easier.Instead of simply telling a client what you observe, you may be able to show them. An enlarged image can help explain texture or congestion. Side-by-side photographs can demonstrate gradual improvement. Hydration measurements can create a starting point for conversations about barrier support. This can shift the consultation from the esthetician prescribing a solution to the esthetician and client looking at the skin together. When clients better understand the reasoning behind a recommendation, treatment plans and
home care can feel more intentional rather than transactional.
Creating a Baseline for Progress
Skin changes slowly, and clients see themselves every day. That can make gradual improvement surprisingly difficult for them to recognize.Consistent imaging creates a baseline. Photographs taken under similar conditions at the beginning of a treatment series can later be compared with images taken after several weeks or months. This can be particularly useful when working with concerns such as acne, pigmentation, texture, dehydration, or visible signs of aging. Documentation also encourages the esthetician to evaluate the treatment plan objectively. Is the skin responding the way you expected? Should the protocol continue? Does something need to be adjusted?

The New Era of Skin Analysis
Technology can give us more information, but the esthetician still has to know how to interpret the skin. practice, and determining whether a recommendation actually makes sense for that individual client. Progress does not always mean dramatic before-and-after photographs. Sometimes it is less visible inflammation, fewer recurring breakouts, improved hydration, more even tone, or a healthier-looking barrier. Technology can help capture those smaller shifts and give clients a clearer picture of how far their skin has come.
Personalization Over Protocol
More information can also support more thoughtful customization. Two clients may walk into the treatment room asking for the exact same facial while presenting with very different skin conditions. Even the same client's skin can change based on season, environment, lifestyle, home care, stress, and recent treatments. Skin analysis technology can provide another reference point when deciding what the skin may need that day. That does not mean allowing a device to dictate the entire treatment. Instead, its findings can be considered alongside the consultation, the client's history, visual and tactile assessment, professional scope, and the esthetician's knowledge of ingredients and modalities.Technology should support critical thinking, not replace it.

Where Does AI Fit?
Artificial intelligence is likely to become an increasingly common part of professional beauty, including skin analysis. That makes understanding its role especially important. AI can process images quickly and organize large amounts of visual information. It may help highlight patterns or create reports that make consultations more engaging. What it cannot fully understand is the person sitting in front of you. An image does not tell you everything about a client's lifestyle, sensitivities, treatment history, habits, expectations, or relationship with their skin. Technology also has limitations, and results can be affected by factors such as image quality, lighting, device design, and the data used to develop a system. Estheticians should therefore treat AIgenerated findings as information to evaluate rather than unquestionable conclusions. The professional remains responsible for asking questions, recognizing contraindications, staying within scope of
Expertise Is Still the Most Important Tool
The future of skin analysis will likely include more data, better imaging, increasingly sophisticated software, and technologies we have not yet introduced into the average treatment room. But more information does not automatically create better outcomes. A sophisticated skin analysis system can identify or highlight something on an image, but the esthetician must understand what that information means within the context of the client's skin. A hydration measurement may provide a number, but professional knowledge determines what to do with it. A digital image may reveal a pattern, but experience guides the questions that should come next. That distinction will become even more important as technology continues to advance. The aesthetic consultation of the future may be more high-tech than ever before, but it should also become more thoughtful, personalized, and educational. The goal is not to replace the esthetician's eye with a machine. It is to give that trained eye another way to see.Technology can provide the information. Expertise is what turns that information into care.

The
Treatment Room Upgrade Guide How to Invest in Technology That Actually Grows Your Business by Samantha Garcia
Walk any esthetics trade show floor and it is easy to feel like your treatment room is suddenly missing something. There is always a new device promising better results, faster treatments, increased revenue, or an entirely new category of services. LED, microcurrent, microchanneling, nano-infusion, oxygen systems, advanced skin analysis, radiofrequency, ultrasound, and multifunctional platforms are becoming increasingly accessible to estheticians.

The Treatment Room Upgrade Guide Technology can absolutely elevate a practice, but purchasing a device simply because it is trending does not guarantee that it will grow your business. The best device is not necessarily the newest, most impressive, or most expensive one. It is the device that makes sense for your clientele, complements the treatments you already perform, fits into your space, and creates enough demand to justify the investment. Before asking, "What's the hottest device right now?" ask a much more valuable question: "What makes sense for my business?"
Start With the Clients Already in Your Treatment Room
Before researching devices, start by researching your own clientele. What concerns are you treating repeatedly? What are clients asking for that you currently cannot provide? Where are you seeing limitations in your existing protocols? An acne-focused esthetician may have completely different technology needs than an esthetician whose clientele is primarily interested in aging well, facial sculpting, pigmentation, or event-ready skin. A solo practitioner specializing in holistic treatments will also approach technology differently than a med spa with multiple providers and a high-volume treatment model. Your booking history can offer valuable insight. Look at your most popular treatments, your most common consultations, and the concerns clients bring up repeatedly. A strong investment should help you solve a problem that already exists within your business rather than forcing you to create demand for a service your clientele may not want.
Look at Your Treatment Menu as a Whole
A device should strengthen your menu, not simply make it longer. One of the most important questions to consider is how naturally the technology fits into what you are already known for. Ideally, a new device should enhance
28
September2026

existing treatments while also giving you opportunities to create new ones. For example, a modality that can be incorporated into several facial protocols may offer more flexibility than a device that can only be used for one highly specific service. The more ways you can thoughtfully integrate the technology, the more opportunities you have to generate revenue from it. This does not mean adding a device to every facial simply because you own it. Technology should have a purpose within the protocol. The goal is to create treatments that feel intentional, not crowded.
Calculate the Real Cost of the Investment
The purchase price is only the beginning. Before committing to a device, understand what it will actually cost to operate. Does it require single-use tips, cartridges, conductive products, replacement parts, proprietary serums, or other consumables? Is there an annual service fee? What happens if the machine needs repairs? Is training included, and will additional certifications be required?
Then consider how much you can realistically charge for the treatment. If a device costs $10,000 and you generate $100 in profit each time you use it, you would need approximately 100 treatments to recover the initial investment, before accounting for other expenses associated with operating the device. That calculation alone can change the way you evaluate technology.Instead of focusing solely on potential revenue, consider how quickly you can realistically reach your break-even point based on your current booking volume.
Think Beyond the Standalone Treatment
One of the biggest mistakes an esthetician can make is purchasing an expensive device and building only one service around it.A versatile piece of technology can potentially generate revenue across multiple areas of your menu. It may become the foundation of a signature treatment, but it could also be incorporated as an upgrade to an existing facial. Clients working toward a specific skin goal may benefit from a treatment series. Members may re-
The Treatment Room Upgrade Guide ceive preferred pricing on the modality or have it incorporated into a higher membership tier. Combination protocols can pair the technology with complementary techniques, while seasonal and pre-event packages can introduce the service to clients who may not initially book it on its own.The question becomes not simply, "How much can I charge for this treatment?" but, "How many ways can this technology responsibly support my business?"That shift can dramatically change the potential return on an investment.
Consider Training, Confidence, and Support
Technology is only as valuable as your ability to use it well. Before purchasing, find out what education is provided. A quick demonstration of how to turn on a machine is very different from comprehensive training on indications, contraindications, settings, treatment planning, sanitation, troubleshooting, and combination protocols. Also consider what happens after the purchase. Is there someone you can contact when you have a question six months later? Does the company provide continuing education? Are protocols updated as the technology evolves? A device sitting unused in the corner of a treatment room has no ROI. The more confident you are in understanding the technology, explaining it to clients, and incorporating it into customized protocols, the more likely you are to actually use it.
Don't Forget the Treatment Room Itself
Sometimes the most practical considerations are the easiest to overlook.Where will the device live? Does it require a cart? How much counter or floor space does it take up? Does it need to remain plugged in? How easily can you move around it while performing a treatment?

The best device is not necessarily the newest, most impressive, or most expensive one. It is the device that makes sense for your clientele. In a small treatment room, adding too much equipment can quickly affect the flow of the space. Clients should not feel as though they are walking into a storage room for machines.Think about the physical experience of using the device from beginning to end. If setting it up, moving it, sanitizing it, and storing it adds significant time between appointments, that should be part of your investment decision too.
Make the Device Work for Your Brand
Finally, consider whether the technology aligns with the experience you want to create. Not every successful esthetician needs the same devices. Your technology should support your philosophy rather than determine it.If your brand is known for corrective skincare, perhaps technology allows you to deliver more targeted protocols and track measurable progress. If your
practice centers on luxury and relaxation, a device may provide advanced results while still fitting seamlessly into a high-touch experience. If you specialize in acne, your investments may focus on technologies that complement the treatment plans your clients are already following. There will always be another machine, modality, or innovation gaining attention. The goal is not to collect technology. It is to build a treatment room where every tool has a reason for being there. The smartest upgrade is the one your clients need, your business can support, and you are excited and educated enough to use consistently. When those pieces align, a device stops being another expense in the treatment room and becomes an investment in what your business can offer next.
