How To Layer Skincare Products

The key point to remember when building a skincare routine is to go from light to heavy. Lighter products can seep into the skin while heavier products layer on top to protect the skin barrier and seal in moisture. While you don’t have to worry about this with standard steps like cleansing and toning, you do need to be mindful of order for things like moisturizers, serums, and sunscreen. So, how can you optimize a daily and nightly skincare ritual?

The Ultimate Skincare Routine

During the day, you want glowing skin that’s protected from all of the elements. Once the sun is down and it's time to turn in, you want to cleanse the day away and indulge the skin with cell-regenerating retinoids. For skincare application orders for both day and night, here is the essential order from start to finish.

1. Cleanse + Tone

The first thing you should do to start (after coffee, of course!) and end the day is cleanse and tone the skin. This gives you a clean and refreshed slate.

2. Serum

Serums tend to be lighter and seep into the skin more efficiently. After cleansing, apply serum and pat it in, giving it a few minutes to seep into the skin before moving on.

3. Eye Cream

Eye cream can make you look more awake even if you were up all night. After serum, dab some under and around the eyes lightly for an instantly brightened look.

4. Moisturizer

Moisturizers tend to be heavier than other products, taking a spot toward the end of askincare routine. Smooth it all over the face for a hydrated finish.

5. Face Oil

Using a face oil amps up skincare immensely. Post-moisturizer, add a few drops to the face, and push the product in for maximum effect.

6. Sunscreen (Daytime Only!)

Last but not least (and never to be skipped!) is sunscreen. Never leave the house without it for protection from harmful UV rays and antiaging benefits.

Nighttime Skincare

A product like retinol works to generate cell turnover and reveal new, fresh skin. Over time, users will notice smoother, more even skin tone with fewer fine lines and wrinkles. To boost skin overnight, add some retinol after moisturizer and before face oil. This will allow it to work its magic and seal in with a layer of oil on top for radiant skin first thing in the morning.

Finding the Perfect Skincare Products for Clients

The good news is, there are a lot of products on the market. The bad news is, well, there are A LOT of products on the market! That can make choosing perfect matches difficult. While it might take some trial and error (samples are your friend!), here are some tips to try out when choosing.

Tip #1. Know Skin Types

The first step is determining skin type: oily, dry, acne-prone, or combination – all of which have a wide selection of available products.

Tip #2. Keep An Eye On Ingredients

Advanced and more natural ingredients are flooding the shelves, backed by a lot of in-depth research. Ditch products filled with harsh irritants and choose natural, more skin-loving ingredients.

Tip #3. Seek A Pro

When in doubt, encourage clients to consult a professional with any questions about treatments or skincare products. The pros usually know best!

Elaia Spa at Hyatt at Olive 8 An organic oasis in the heart of Seattle

Elaia Spa is an eco-friendly gem, named for the Greek word for olive, symbolic of peace, wisdom and resilience. If you find yourself in the Pacific Northwest, you must make time to visit this harmonious space dedicated to wellness, which has charmed both locals and visitors since its opening in 2009.

“We are really THE spa in Seattle where you can spend the whole day,” shares Spa Director Trina Wood. “With any 60-minute service, you gain access to the pool, hot tub, steam, sauna, fitness center, and relaxation room. We believe that a spa service is about so much more than just the time in the treatment. Relaxation can start as early as 9:00 a.m. and last as late as 6:00 p.m. for day guests.”

Elaia features12 treatment rooms, one including a shower, as well as a couple’s room with a shower and large two-person soaking tub. The nail salon has pedicure and manicure stations, and the men’s and women’s locker rooms both have steam and sauna areas. A 65-foot saline lap pool, complete with underwater music, plus a hot tub and fitness center round out the amenities.

Here we share how the Elaia Spa has cultivated the ultimate relaxing atmosphere.

Signature Treatment

Elaia’s signature treatment is the 90-minute Coffee Scrub & Massage. A therapist begins this service with an invigorating house made scrub featuring cane sugar, locally roasted Victrola coffee, and organic cocoa powder. The scrub is then rinsed off in a multi-jetted shower. The treatment finished with a 60-minute massage using ultra-hydrating shea butter.

Marketing

“We focus on social media mostly, inviting local influencers to come in and experience the spa and hotel,” notes Wood. The hotel also cross-promotes with the two other hotels in the collection, The Hyatt Regency Seattle, and The Grand Hyatt Seattle, both located within one block. “We also offer the option to purchase a series of services – buy five, get the sixth free.”

Elaia also has quarterly specials, featuring a massage or body treatment, facial service, and nail treatment. The lead therapist chooses a theme and custom blends products to use.

Training

Elaia holds quarterly trainings that are put on by vendors or cover relevant procedures. Monthly meetings review any hotel-wide updates, with the majority of the meeting spent going “around the room” to allow each employee to share general concerns, maintenance needs, and positive things they have to share. Previous meeting notes are revisited to ensure appropriate follow-up.

“I like follow up on performance, good or bad, as it happens. We have overall goals of great guest experiences, as well as hotel-wide goals for guest satisfaction, shares Wood. “Staff is incentivized for retail sales, but we purposefully do not have sales goals, so our spa remains a no-pressure sales environment.”

Revenue and Retail

“We really look for lines to be organic, clean, not tested on animals, and something that will fit in well with our

spa. For retail, my main focus is local. I want guests coming to our spa find something unique, and memorable, details Wood. “As far as the process for choosing, it could be anything from finding a product that looks interesting on social media, or a team member tells me about a product that they are loving. I also really love using faire.com, it’s such a great tool for retail boutiques.”

Elaia dedicates a whole retail section to local artisans, featuring candles, water bottles, earrings, necklaces all from local Seattle artists. It also carries product lines including Eminence, Luzern, Kush Queen, Massage Cannabyss, Essence One, Tweezerman, Sparitual, and Harper & Ari

Elaia is a hometown favorite, with 70 percent local guests, 25 percent hotel guests, and five percent condo residents. Revenue breaks down to 50 percent massage, 20 percent skincare, 15 percent nails, and 15 percent retail.

Spa Director Spotlight

Born and raised 30 minutes outside of Seattle, Trina Wood decided at age 13 that the beauty industry was her chosen career path. She has experience in all aspects of the industry, with a focus on high end spas. As a total product junkie, Trina’s favorite hobbies are trying and buying spa products, visiting different spas, crafts, and any family activity with her husband and four children.

Refurbished or New?

Finding the right device for your business

From the moment a client steps into your spa you want them to feel confident that they’ll be treated to an excellent experience – and the most important aspect to creating that is delivering services that meet or exceed their expectations for skin care, body sculpting or hair removal and have them coming back for more.

Even more essential than creating a welcoming environment with aromatherapy and soothing music is meeting each client’s needs by selecting the right devices and ensuring that your staff can use them properly. But how do you assess which device is the right device for your practice? How can you find a quality refurbished device if you can’t afford to buy new? When

is it best to refurbish versus replace a device? And how can you find flexible options for maintaining and repairing aesthetics devices?

Here are the top five considerations when it comes to making a solid business decision around aesthetic devices.

1. Client Concerns and Desires

Getting to know the people who live in your market area is the first step to determining the right menu of services to offer and equipment to buy. Be attentive to new or add-on services they are requesting for skin and body needs around fine lines, wrinkles, skin tightening, hair removal, pigmentation, veins, cellulite concerns, body contouring, and more. Identify whether the majority of the concerns are about fat, skin tone and texture so you know what types and how many devices you’ll need to address them.

2. Time is Money

Today’s newer technology has reduced skin resurfacing treatment preparation and procedures by as much as 30-40 minutes versus treatments with older devices. Choosing the right equipment, whether new or used, can provide safe, effective timely procedures. Happy patients and quicker room turnover time is important to revenue generation.

3. Find a Consultant, Not a Salesperson

A consultant can help you analyze the needs of your practice and provide a fair and balanced approach to your purchasing. A reputable company that is “manufacturer agnostic” – that isn’t wed to a single brand or manufacturer – will be driven by patient needs and interests and be focused on your success, not just the solutions that they sell.

4. Protect Your Investment

As a spa owner, staying focused on what a device actually does, how fast it works and knowing there’s a company that can stand behind it are keys to a solid return on investment. You’ll

want to determine the right balance of technology that is both standard and cutting-edge. The vast majority of spas and aesthetic practices make their money on the most commonly demanded consumer services, so it’s fine to stick with older equipment backed by a quality regular maintenance service program to prevent downtime. And remember that even new devices need service to maintain them! Too many spa owners spend thousands of dollars on innovative devices and assume they’re done, but investing in a first-rate service program to maintain them will pay rewards over time.

5. Cash Flow and Available Financing

Just because you see a new flashy device on the market, doesn’t mean you need it. If you decide to purchase a pre-owned or refurbished device, stay with the top brands – that way you’ll know the system will have good longevity, available parts, and safe and effective technology. When shopping for new technology, test it out and get references from other spas and practices already using it. Whether refurbished or new, ask to see current before and after photos for proof that it works.

The longer the warranty on the device – five years versus 30 days ––

demonstrates high expectations for the life of a product. Payment terms are important, too. If the seller wants full payment up front, that’s a red flag. Reputable companies are willing to be flexible with monthly, quarterly or annual payments, and if they have inhouse financing, that’s a plus. They’re establishing their vested interest in the equipment’s long-term effectiveness.

The bottom line is, if a device is working for you and your clients, you can service and not replace it. The right service partner should be able to provide routine maintenance so your device lasts longer, and often can recommend when it’s time to select a new device that meets a need to provide a better outcome or decrease treatment time. Having a full-service provider that is focused on you will help you stay focused on your clients and your business.

Esthetician Spotlight Alina Petre, Sana Skin Studio

What is your business called and where are you located?

Our business is called Sana Skin Studio. We offer a new kind of facial experience that aims to change people's relationship with their skin and their products through personalized goaldriven facials, real guidance, and curated clean skincare. We currently have two locations. Our first studio is located in the heart of Wynwood, our second studio opened in December in Fort Lauderdale, and we are opening our third studio in Coconut Grove this Summer!

Can you give a little information about your background as an esthetician?

I have always found myself surrounded by beauty in various forms. When I was in school, I majored in art, then worked in fashion, and eventually found my way into esthetics. Throughout the years, I realized I wanted to work in a field where I can help make the world a more loving one. Helping others through healing and treating their skin conditions has given me a tremendous feeling of wholeness, community, and that we are making a difference on this planet.

What inspired you to become an esthetician?

I was a spa enthusiast and very curious to learn the profession in more depth, to learn how to better care for myself. In beauty school I learned that this profession is as healing for me as it is for the guest I’m treating, and that is what continuously inspires me.

What beauty philosophy do you stand by?

Healthy skin comes from a healthy mind, soul, and body. I like to get to know my guest's level of stress, anxiety and lifestyle, so I can help them with

40 February2023 LNEonline.com

the proper guidance as far as supplements, skincare, and soul healing.

What is your favorite treatment?

It’s hard to pick a favorite as they all are great for different reasons. I’m excited about the Express Facial to jumpstart a vacation glow up. I also love the Signature for monthly maintenance, where you can really see the progress month to month. The SuperGlow is amazing to lift and boost the skin’s radiance. The SuperDetox is fun for me because I get to treat and balance congested skin. One of my favorite things about Sana is that with any of the treatments I choose for my guests, they will see and feel the results.

What brands do you use and why?

I personally use all the brands we carry at the studio and put trust in them because of their efficiency and results. How I see the skin is as a person with basic needs, such as: food (face oils and masks for nourishment), water (serums and essence for hydration), and shelter (moisturizer and SPF for protection). Some favorites are Pai for sensitive days, Naturopathica for routine, Ursa Major for their serums, Linne for their amazing results driven products, but also Augustinus Bader for their triple Peptide technology—it doesn’t only help treat acne but adds elasticity and renewal without the sensitivity of retinoids.

What is your secret to beautiful skin?

A balanced skin routine is the secret to radiant skin. I’m a big believer in skin cycling, which is a skincare routine that requires rest days in between your active ingredient-products to allow your skin's microbiome to recover.

What are your favorite tools to use in the treatment room and why?

Every tool has a special benefit to it and I don’t think I could choose be-

tween them. I usually encourage my guests to add these tools to their treatment so they can have longer lasting results. A tool that has many benefits is the microcurrent, which focuses on three depths of the tissue encouraging absorption of products in the epidermis, and stimulating collagen into the dermis. It reaches and stimulates the muscle through randomized wave lengths so that the muscle never gets used to the same movement. Stretching the skin in many directions relaxes the muscle and loosens the fine lines and expression lines. Bonus points for the microcurrent is that it also detoxifies the skin and encourages lymphatic drainage for less puffiness.

What is your favorite part about working for your company?

I love working at Sana because we really focus on the progress of our guests’ skin journey from the inside out, through clean skincare and wellness. There’s a lot of time, love, and effort into every detail. From testing and curating each product, to hiring a team who are genuinely aligned with the brand and community. It is amazing to work in an environment where everybody loves their job, has great intentions, and they live for healthy results.

Instead, it infuses the skin with hydrating serums, plumping cells below the surface to accelerate turnover of dead skin cells on the surface. Debris is swept away, and this gentle, natural exfoliation service closes with the cool, soothing feel of the CryoWand.

THE KEY TO THE BEST YOU: LED LIGHT THERAPY

LED light therapy really is whole-family, whole-body wellness. Your female clients may already know this, but read on to learn three ways LED light therapy can help you help your male clients reach their New Year’s resolutions and improve their health from the inside out.

SKIN HEALTH

Women aren’t the only clients looking to improve their skin health. Whether it’s treating acne or reducing those fine lines and wrinkles, don’t forget to educate your male clients on all the benefits of light therapy.

Proven by research, red and nearinfrared wavelengths can combat the signs of aging. These specific wavelengths of light energy are clinically verified to enhance your body's natural ability to generate collagen and elastin by activating the fibroblast cells.

Blue LED light, especially in combination with red light therapy, emits specific, clinically proven wavelengths of light to trigger an all-natural effect in human tissue, killing acne-causing bacteria, decreasing inflammation, and improving skin tone, texture, and clarity.

LED light therapy is a great standalone service or as an add-on following laser, peels, microneedling, microdermabrasion, injections, and many other facial treatments you already offer in your practice.

HAIR RESTORATION

Offering LED light therapy that specifically addresses a common male concern can help attract new customers

who might not otherwise consider making an appointment with you. Hair loss remedies can be expensive and even painful. LED light therapy is an affordable, painless alternative to otherwise expensive and invasive treatments.

MUSCLE & JOINT PAIN

Many of your male clients will set some personal fitness goals in the New Year and likely suffer some muscle strain and pain as they work to achieve those goals. Did you know that LED light therapy can also help speed up postworkout recovery and ease joint pain and stiffness?

Infrared (IR) light therapy works by boosting cellular energy to encourage and enhance the body’s natural healing

abilities. Much like a cell phone charger increases the battery power of your cell phone, red light therapy increases the energy in your cells to promote healing of the muscle or injured tissue.

Whether for skin health, general pain conditions, or hair restoration, LED light therapy benefits the whole body. And the best part, in addition to your in-spa treatments, you can investigate rental, retail, and affiliate programs to help your clients maintain their results at home.

LED light therapy is scientifically proven to be an effective and safe treatment that is non-invasive, non-toxic, and painless. Use the healing power of light to help your clients look good on the outside and feel good on the inside!

than come out with several new products each year, AP continuously works to ensure their core items are as advanced as possible. I could also go on forever about the value of the AP sugar paste- it’s literally the best formula to work with. They offer several different types to support all environments, body areas, hair types, etc.

What kind of support do you receive from Alexandria Professional?

Sarah Herbst, Sugar Bar

What Made You Decide To Work With Alexandria Professional?

My very first experience with Alexandria Professional was at a training class I took with an educator named Debra Bonds. Her passion for sugaring was something I had been searching for, and I was blown away by the level of professionalism and knowledge she had. That was over 10 years ago, and I have seen the same passion and expertise in every employee at Alexandria Professional that I have had the pleasure to meet with. I knew that sugaring could be something huge in my area, and I also knew that a company with values like Alexandria Professional was exactly what I needed. To top it all off, the sugar paste is unmatched! No one does sugar paste like Alexandria Professional. It is smooth, stretchy, and gloriously easy to work with no mat -

ter what stage of the learning process you are in.

What do you enjoy about Alexandria Professional products?

Alexandria Professional products are easy to use and explain to my clients. The ingredients are perfectly chosen to support all skin types before and after sugaring (or any treatment!). The line is not complicated and focuses on items that are effective, natural, and beneficial from head to toe. One of my favorite things about Alexandria Professional is their strong collection of core products that they have perfected. Over the years I have seen this company share their knowledge and expertise directly with their professional accounts at each product update, allowing us to keep our clients educated and stocked with the very best skincare items. Rather

The ongoing training offered by Alexandria Professional has been a huge asset to my career. I have been to continuing education classes several times over the years for sugaring technique and expertise, and while I always recommend in-person training, the amount of time and resources AP pours into their professionals from afar is fabulous. Webinars, chats, Facebook groups, blogs, video training of specific skills are all available online for account holders and these have helped take my staff to the next level of Sugar Mastery. If I have a question, there is a professional within the company available to talk to and put my mind at ease.

What sets Alexandria Professional apart from other brands?

The heart behind Alexandria Professional is Lina Kennedy, and when you have someone with that big of a heart running a company, well, it’s going to stand apart from the rest! Lina Kennedy has created a culture of big business with a small business feel. When you are working with your educator and the surrounding team at AP, it’s easy to forget that this a hugely acknowledged worldwide organization, because it feels like you are being trained by friends and family. This is a brand that focuses on the professionals and has maintained their core values after all this time. The way they care about people is how I care about people, and that’s why I love Alexandria Professional.

The Truth About Toxins How the gut affects the skin

Toxins are present all around us. They are present in foods, water, plastics, pesticides, cleaning products, and personal hygiene products. Some toxins are from plants, animals, bacteria, or fungi. Toxins are any substance that causes structural and/or functional damage to the cells, tissues, or organs and may be obtained from internal or external sources. The most common toxins that lead to diseases are lead, mercury, arsenic, fluoride, mold, and formaldehyde. Here, we will address the top three toxins (heavy metals) and how they affect the gut, and ultimately, the skin.

First, let’s examine some of the most popular myths circulating in today’s media sources.

58 February2023 LNEonline.com
organic & wellness The Truth About Toxins

Myth # 1

The dosage makes the poison, so only large exposures play a role in toxins causing any sort of disease. Recently published research showed that doses could have the same or even greater effect, especially for endocrine disrupting chemicals.

Myth #2

The body easily rids the cells of toxins; therefore, we don’t have to worry about toxins in our food or water. Studies have shown that bodies can retain toxins. In fact, adipose tissue serves as a toxin depot that increases in response to toxic overload. Another study revealed that those with dental amalgam found toxins two to twelve times the mercury amount, specifically in the brain and kidneys.

Myth #3

Toxins play a role in disease only in rare cases, but it’s not that many. According to a study conducted in 2011, disease contributions are quite challenging to calculate. However, even conservatively, they found 4.9 million deaths and 86 million disability adjusted life years annually - more than cancer) The cumulative cocktail effects can be dramatic.

Toxin Effects on the Gut

What happens to the gut and skin when toxins are present? Our cells and immune systems react to toxins as an invaders. Toxins are damaging to the endothelial lining of an artery or the lining wall of the intestines, ultimately triggering an autoimmune reaction. A variety of metals and toxins may cause symptoms ranging from gastrointestinal distress, weakened immune system, microbial imbalances, and dysbiosis. When the physiology of the gut is compromised (intestinal permeability, leaky gut, bacterial overgrowth, and chronic inflammation), the immune system becomes overburdened.

Heavy metals or toxins also affect intracellular antioxidant function. This, in turn, directly affects the mitochondria altering ATP production. When less ATP

is produced, cells are unable to fend off intruders, thus providing a suitable environment for toxins to accumulate. Heavy metals can also interfere with intracellular antioxidant function, resulting in mitochondrial damage and impairing cellular respiration.

Toxin Influences on the Skin

As the body is designed to manage and excrete toxins readily through sweat, skin, hair, urine, stools, fingernails, and breathing, indications on the skin may show toxicity. The toxins that are not excreted will circulate in the blood and eventually are stored in the cells, tissues, and organs. If toxins are accumulated and stored in the body, inflammation, organ disfunction, and oxidative stress occurs.

Skin damage comes from cellular damage, increased oxidative stress (inflammation), mitochondria damage (apoptosis, low turnover, aging cells), enzyme dysfunction (impairs detoxification, and immune disruption). For example, hyperpigmentation can be associated with toxins such as heavy metals or oxidative trans fats (lipofuscin). Lipofuscin and metal toxins present themselves in the form of sun damaged skin, and liver or age spots. Another example is the presence of the toxin arsenic. Arsenic toxicity manifests in conditions such as hyperkeratosis, increased plantar warts, skin pigmentation changes, or line formation on nails. Arsenic binds strongly to keratin in hair, skin, and nails. Consider toxins that are interfering with cell respiration and turnover when treating clients with dry, lifeless skin.

Strategies to Naturally Detox

The beginning of the year is the most popular time to begin a detox program. However, many detox programs are not safe for all. For a more gentle, natural process, I recommend the following strategies. Remember that healthy skin comes from within.

1. Reduce toxic exposure, prioritize whole, organic foods, and use nontoxic personal hygiene products and home cleaning products.

2. Address your gut function with a functional medicine professional. If the gut, liver, or other tissues are not functioning correctly, a detox program could do more harm than good. Start with a good foundation. The first stage starts with fasting, sweating, resistance training, restful sleep, and increased hydration.

3. Natural phytonutrients such as polyphenols and flavonoids, herbs, citrus, and green tea can help reduce oxidative stress. Glutathione is a powerful intracellular antioxidant and detoxifying molecule formed by a peptide consisting of three amino acids, cysteine, glycine, and glutamic acid. The formation of this peptide is dependent upon adequate amounts of selenium, a common mineral found in Brazil nuts. Selenium is also needed for thyroid function.

4. Get seven to eight hours or more of restful sleep at night. Sleep is the body’s natural detoxifier.

In summary, the body and cells are designed to rid themselves of toxins. Talk to your clients about these strategies to naturally detox for improved gut and skin function with lasting results.

Extension Retention

Tips for the longest-lasting lashes

Being a lash artist is more than just applying lash extensions. There is a technique, as well as a few important factors. One of the most important factors of lashing is retention. Did you know that one of the biggest reasons a client doesn’t return is because of poor retention? You can create an incredible set of lashes but have bad retention, which will result in you feeling inadequate. You want your clients’ lash extensions to last, only needing a fill every couple of weeks. Are the extensions falling off just days after application? Or are your clients coming back after three weeks with little to no lashes left? Here are my top retention tips, broken down into five important steps!

62 February2023 LNEonline.com
image Extension Retention

1. Clean Lashes Matter

One of the most important things to remember is that lash extensions do not stick to dirty lashes.

Every so often I will have a client who comes in with mascara on. I send them to the bathroom to use remover the best they can, and I think we are good to go. The truth is, that client’s lash extensions will NEVER last. The retention will be horrible. Between the leftover mascara and the makeup remover, the set will result in poor retention. When scheduling a client, it is important to tell them not to wear mascara the whole day of their appointment. Leftover mascara on the natural lashes will make it so the extensions do not have a good connection. A reminder call, text, or email is also helpful.

Once the client comes in, washing their lashes is the first thing you will do. You need to start with a clean surface, and although the lashes may look clean, make sure they really are. I recommend washing with foaming wash and a cleansing brush. This combination will help get in between those tiny lashes and remove any dust or oil that will stand as a barrier between your lash extension and the natural lash.

Keep in mind that washing lashes and applying a prep solution are two different steps. Primer is considered a prep solution; it is great to use on oily clients after a good cleanse. If the client’s lashes are oily, I would recommend to prime them. Primer is not one-sizefits-all though. It can be drying, so use it sparingly. Always start off a lash set with a clean, natural lashes.

2. The Amount of Adhesive Matters

Make sure you are using a fresh adhesive. Once it is opened you have six to eight weeks to use it, depending on how often you are opening it. If you are opening it a few times a day every day, you will be closer to the six-week range. The more it is exposed to air

(aka opened and closed), the sooner the adhesive will weaken. Make sure to use enough adhesive. Many artists use too little which results in lashes just falling off. You also do not want to use too much and glue someone's lashes all together - yikes! I recommend about two small "beads" of adhesive on each extension. Something to keep in mind is the thickness and length of the natural lash. The smaller and thinner the client’s natural lash is, the less surface area you have for adhesive.

Humidity plays an important role and does affect your adhesive. The higher the humidity, the quicker your adhesive will cure, or dry. Adhesive is attracted to moisture. If you are in a high humidity area, keep that in mind that you need to be quick and get that lash extension onto the natural lash so the adhesive does not dry before getting there.

3. The Curl You Use Matters

If your client has very straight lashes, what do you think will happen if you apply a D Curl? The lashes will most likely not last as long because there is not enough surface area that is meeting with the lash extension and natural lash. Applying a D Curl (which is the curliest) to someone with straight natural lashes will result in the extension just popping off. If you find a curl that matches their natural lash better, retention will be better because there is more surface area that is connected.

4. Application Matters

Good retention will result from good application. It's simple. Make sure the

bases of the natural lash and the eyelash extension are flush with each other (think laying on top of each other). You never want the lash extension base to be in the air, that can lead to pain and irritation, as well as causing the lashes to pop off. Remember, poor placement = poor retention.

5. Aftercare Matters

It is your job as a lash artist to TEACH aftercare. Teach your clients how to take care of their lashes, as many of them will have never had lash extensions before. Teaching proper care is crucial to good retention. I like to tell my clients while I am doing their lashes how to care for them, but also send them home with a take home card of how to care for them. Things you should point out to clients include: do not use mascara, avoid high heat, try not to sleep on your face, stay away from oils, and cleanse your lashes daily.

Follow these steps and I promise you will see improved extension retention!
