UNDERSTANDING ACNE Acne is not merely a result of poor hygiene; rather, it is a complex interplay of factors. Individuals predisposed to acne experience abnormal shedding of skin cells, leading to a buildup that clogs pores. Excess oil production, the presence of acne-causing bacteria, and inflammation further contribute to acne development. Genetic predisposition, hormonal fluctuations, and environmental factors also play a role.

DEBUNKING ACNE MYTHS Let me address prevalent myths surrounding acne, providing evidence-based insights that dispel misconceptions and promote informed skincare practices.

Myth 1: Acne is caused by poor hygiene.

Reality: Acne is primarily influenced by factors such as excess oil, dead skin cell accumulation, bacteria, and inflammation. While maintaining a consistent and gentle skincare routine is important, excessive scrubbing or washing can irritate the skin and worsen the condition.

Myth 2: Acne only affects teenagers.

Reality: Although acne is often associated with adolescence due to hormonal changes, it can affect people of all ages. Adult acne is prevalent and can be influenced by hormones, stress, and lifestyle choices.

Myth 3: Popping pimples helps them heal faster.

Reality: Popping or picking at pimples can lead to increased inflammation, infection, and scarring. Professional acne treatments and targeted skincare are more effective and promote proper healing.

Myth 4: Sun exposure clears up acne.

Reality: While the sun may temporarily

improve the appearance of acne, it is not a recommended longterm management method. Sun exposure can worsen acne by causing inflammation, excessive oil production, and skin damage.

CLEARING THE SKIN To achieve clear skin, a comprehensive approach is necessary. It involves three key steps: 1. Remove Pore Cloggers: It is crucial to eliminate any pore-clogging substances that trap dead skin cells.

This includes avoiding comedogenic skincare products and regularly cleansing the skin to remove dirt, excess oil, and makeup.

To recap, what is a MedSpa? A MedSpa is a combination of an aesthetic medical clinic and a day spa that provides non-surgical aesthetic medical services under the supervision of a licensed physician. MedSpa business is booming, and here are some nationwide figures that show just how much of a growth industry this is:

Next, we answer the question, what is a Medical Director? A Medical Director is a physician who provides oversight of medical treatments provided under the authority of their medical license to ensure patients are treated to the standard of care required. In some states, this oversight is typically in an administrative capacity and can be provided off-site.

It is important to note that regulation of MedSpas and aesthetic medical services can vary significantly from state to state. First, you must familiarize yourself with any laws that are created and maintained by your state’s governing authority. Understanding the medical landscape surrounding these treatments helps ensure that all medical procedures or processes are done in accordance with existing medical regulations.

The following common treatments fall into the category of medical aesthetics, and typically require some degree of oversight: • Laser/energy based skin and hair removal procedures 26

• IM (intramuscular) injection therapy

Depending on your state, aesthetic compliance may include OSHA and HIPPA compliance and training, practice of medicine, Medical Director compensation, consents, protocol and standing orders, good faith exams and standard of care, medical records and their ownership, telemedicine, contracts and collaborating physician agreements, and licensure and continuing education.

So…do you need a Medical Director? If you are providing cosmetic treatments regulated by your state’s medical board, the short answer is YES! However, the best first step you can take is learning about your state’s current aesthetic medical regulations.

• Dermabrasion and chemical peels (beneath stratum corneum) • Dermaplane Individual state regulations determine whether a physician may delegate treatments to non-licensed professionals, such as advanced practice practitioners (NP, APRN, CRNA, PA), licensed medical professionals (RN, LVN/LPN, MA, CNAS) or non-licensed professionals.

Another crucial area of regulation is aesthetic medical equipment. This is governed by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), which sets guidelines for what makes a product safe for use. We encourage all providers to understand the ins and outs of FDAcleared products, and the importance of using FDA-approved equipment.

Thankfully, there is an easy way to do this! Visit the FDA website for a searchable database to look up equipment before you invest.

2023 makes 20 years as a licensed esthetician! I started before the skincare industry blew all the way up and it became super popular to become one. Being an OG here made me learn things the good old school way, reading and doing. I opened my first boutique at 23 years old in Portland,

Oregon. And one big thing that I have learned is there are certain things that stand the test of time, like good old fashioned knowledge of skin!

What inspired you to become an esthetician?

When I was young, one of my aunts owned a salon that my cousin and I would often hang out at, seeing beautiful women get primped and prettied as a part of their regular beauty regimen. My cousin and I would say we were going to have a salon together.

From about 10 years old, I always wanted to be in the beauty and skin industry. I was fixated on creating a flawless palate for foundation and color to be applied. I also loved mixing my own ingredients and creating topicals to relieve skin issues. I never liked seeing great makeup with poorly cared for skin underneath. Once I learned that I could make a great career of it, I moved forward, with my parents help, opening my first small boutique at 22 years old. I became really popular, first with shaping brows, and then hyperpigmentation correction. I love what I do and am so grateful for the path to getting here!

What beauty philosophy do you stand by?

Great skin and great brows are the foundation of every woman’s beauty.

Focus there and everything else will be better!

What is your favorite treatment?

My favorite treatment is one that I created called The Model Peel. It's a light lactic-based peeling solution that can be used in conjunction with other treatments to safely and lightly peel darker complexions. I created this for some French-based African models who came to New York City for fashion week. They had suffered bad breakouts after eating American food. My peeling solution and process was able to correct this issue in three to four weeks.

What brands do you use and why?

I focus on two brands in my studios: Karin Herzog Skincare because it is in line with my philosophy of using oxygen to repair and correct skin issues, specifically hyperpigmentation. My favorite product is the E & R Pro Booster Serum, which combines Vitamin C and Hyalauronic Acid. It’s a must take-home product and great to end facials with.

I also love Amarte Skincare. It is a smaller line of exfoliating and hydration products. My favorite product of theirs is the Daily Wonder Cleanser. It’s highly concentrated, leaves skin very hydrated and lasts a long time.

What is your secret to beautiful skin?

The secret to anything great is consistency! You don't need a 15-step regimen, but you do need consistency in these areas: cleansing, exfoliating, moisturizing, and protecting your skin.

If you have an issue internally, focus on your gut health. No secrets, just action!

What are your favorite tools to use in the treatment room and why?

I still love the diamond tip microdermabrasion machine. When used properly you can really give great results in ONE TREATMENT! I also like to incorporate the oxygen spray gun to finish facials; it’s a great finisher and clients love it!

What is your favorite part about working for your company?

My favorite part about working for myself is having the independence and ability to create my future and control my destiny and growth. I work by my own motto that every client and employee is treated with the highest level of customer service and respect.

That is the way to longevity.

An effective routine often incorporates Ayurvedic skincare.

Ayurveda, meaning "science of life," is a holistic healing system that focuses on helping the body heal from within.

Ayurvedic products incorporate highly potent botanicals and natural ingredients, which I've found beneficial for myself and my clients. These products also help with skin issues such as acne, eczema, dryness, rosacea, and redness.

Let's jump into the skin preparation steps: 1. Micellar Water: Begin by using micellar water and a cotton round to remove any remaining makeup or debris from the client's skin.

This step is especially important for clients who may arrive with leftover makeup. Micellar water is available in various formulations, but I opt for one specifically designed for sensitive skin.

2. Cleansing Balm: Follow up with a balm cleanser. Look for a balm that won't dry out the skin and contains French Green clay. This clay offers mild exfoliating properties to eliminate dry, flaky skin while aiding hydration.

Additionally, French Green clay reduces blemishes and tightens the skin. Another beneficial ingredient to seek in a balm is Tulsi, known for its acne-preventing and anti-inflammatory properties. To remove the balm, either use a facial spray or micellar water.

Remember to be gentle when removing the cleanser, especially if your client is having a breakout.

3. Toner: Toner will help seal up pores, making them appear smaller.

PH balance and help absorb other skincare products. You always want to use a toner before using a facial oil.

This will make the oil more effective.

4. Facial Oil: Don't be afraid to use facial oil, even on acne-prone skin. The right oil can help reduce the skin's oil production over time and brighten up acne scars. Facial oils help lock in moisture and strengthen the skin's natural barrier. Look for oils containing blue tansy, which soothes, nourishes, and calms the skin while reducing redness.

5. Moisturizer: Choose an oil-free or non-comedogenic moisturizer. These products are less likely to clog pores and contribute to acne breakouts.

Opting for this type of moisturizer allows the skin to breathe freely.

Make sure to have options, a matte moisturizer and a hydrating one, to cover all your bases.

Once the skin is properly prepped, it's time for foundation. Look for a lightweight formula that can be built up from sheer to full coverage, depending on your client's desired look. This versatility ensures you can meet their specific needs. I usually lay down a light layer of foundation, then go back

in with a pencil brush where they need more coverage. If your client is dealing with texture, you can opt for a matte foundation. This will help diffuse the look of the skin, so it doesn’t draw more attention to the area. If you don’t have a matte foundation, just add powder to the areas that have a little extra shine.

By following these steps and incorporating these recommended products, you can provide effective makeup solutions for clients with acne and sensitive skin. Remember, skincare is a crucial part of the process, and using products with natural ingredients and properties can deliver excellent results.
