Studentsandtheirparentsshouldcarefullyselectcoursesduringtheregistration process,asthemasterscheduleandfacultyassignmentsarebuiltbasedonthese requests.Thefollowingpolicyisintendedtominimizeschedulechangesandreinforce theimportanceofcommitmenttoselectedcourses:
1.ChangesforErrorsOnly:
Schedulechangesarelimitedtoerrorssuchasincorrectplacement,missing prerequisites,orgraduationrequirements.Thesemustbeaddressedwithinthe firstweekofschoolbycontactingthestudent’sgrade-levelcounselor.
2.RestrictionsonPreferences:
Requestsforchangesbasedonteacherpreference,classperiodpreferences,or difficultylevelwillnotbehonored.
3.Post-FirstWeekChanges:
Afterthefirstweek,nochangesarepermittedunlessinitiatedbystafffor inappropriateplacements.Extenuatingcircumstancesmaybereviewedby administrationonacase-by-casebasis.
4.CommitmenttoYear-LongCourses:
Courseselectionsrepresentayear-longcommitment.Studentsareexpectedto remainintheirchosencoursesunlessspecificexceptionsapply,asoutlined above.

InordertoregisterforanHonors-levelcourse,studentsneedtohavean80%orabovein theprecedingCollegePrepcoursewithinthesubjectareasequence.Pleasecheck individualcoursedescriptionsforspecificHonors-levelprerequisites.
StudentscurrentlyenrolledinaCollegePrepclassmayenrollineitherCollegePrepor HonorsiftheircumulativegradeisaBorhigher.Forthebestchanceofsuccessin Honors,anAisrecommended.Ifastudent’sgradeisaCorlower,theymustenrollin CollegePrep.
StudentscurrentlyenrolledinanHonorsclassmayenrollinCollegePrep,Honors,orAP iftheircumulativegradeisaBorhigher.ForthebestchanceofsuccessinAP,anAis recommended.Ifastudent’sgradeisaC,theymayenrollinCollegePreporHonors.If theirgradeisaDorlower,theymustenrollinCollegePrep.
SomeAP,Honorsandelectivecoursesmayhaveadditionaloruniquerequirements specifiedinthecoursedescriptions.
Thisprocessensuresstudentsareplacedincoursesthatalignwiththeirabilitiesand promotescommitmenttotheiracademicchoices.
LNCoffersaprerequisiteappealprocessforstudentswhoarewithin5percentage pointsofmeetingaprerequisiterequirement.Exceptionsmaybeconsideredincases wherestudentsdemonstrateexceptionalcircumstancesorconcurrentenrollmentin coursesthatalignwiththeintendedacademicpathway.Tobeeligible,studentsmust demonstrateacademicreadinessthroughperformanceinrelatedsubjects, standardizedtestscores,orteacherrecommendations.Theappealprocessrequiresa completedform,arationaleforreadiness,andsupportingdocumentation.
Appealswillonlybeconsideredforstudentswhomeetthespecificcriteriaoutlinedin theeligibilityprocess.Thestudent’steacherandcounselorwillprovidefeedback,and theappealscommitteewillreviewthesubmission.Decisionswillbecommunicated within10schooldays.Ifapproved,studentsmustcommittocompletingthecourse.
Studentsareencouragedtothoroughlyassesstheirpreparednessandconsultwith theircounselorbeforesubmittinganappeal.Thedecisionmadebytheappeals committeeisfinal.
AllsummercourseworkacceptanceatLakeNormanCharterSchool(LNC)is dependentonadministrationapproval.Tobeeligibleforsummercoursework,students mustdemonstrateconsistenteffortthroughouttheschoolyear.Aminimumofa45%is requiredforeligibility.
Studentsmaychoosetotakesummerschoolcoursesincaseswhereremediationis necessary—forexample,iftheyhavepreviouslyattemptedthecourseintheclassroom butdidnotpass.
Beforeenrollinginanysummerschoolcourse,priorapprovalisrequiredtoensurethe coursemeetsLNC’sstandardsforcredit.Highschoolcounselorshavealistofapproved summerschooloptionsandthenecessaryapprovalformstoguidestudentsand familiesthroughtheprocess.Foranyquestionsortoinitiateapproval,pleasereachout toanLNCHighSchoolCounselor.
StudentsareexpectedtoprioritizetheLNCcurriculumfortheiracademicneeds.Inrare caseswhereastudentseekscreditforacoursetakenoutsideofLNC,priorwritten approvalmustbeobtainedfromthestudent’scounselor,anadministrator,and,when applicable,therelevantcontent-specificinstructorordepartmentchair.Theexternal coursemustalignwiththeNorthCarolinaStandardCourseofStudyormeetLNC’s academicstandards,withdocumentationofthesyllabusandaccreditationrequiredfor review.
Uponsuccessfulcompletionoftheapprovedcourse,thestudentmustsubmitanofficial transcriptorgradereportfromtheexternalinstitutionforcreditconsideration.LNC reservestherighttodenycreditifthecoursedoesnotmeetitsstandardsforrigor, instructionalquality,orproperapprovalprocedures.
WhatisdualenrollmentthroughanNCCommunityCollege?
StudentshavetheopportunitytotakeNCCommunityCollegeCoursesthathavea transferguaranteetoanypublicNorthCarolinauniversity.ReadtheComprehensive ArticulationAgreementhere,ifinterested.
Studentswillreceiveeitherequivalentcreditorelectivecredit(dependingonthe course)attheirNCCollege/University.Forprivateandout-of-stateschools,you mustaskatransferevaluatorastothetransferabilityofcourses.
TuitionisFREE,whichcansaveparentshundredsofdollarspersemesterhour.
Studentsareresponsibleforpayingfees,booksandanysuppliesneeded.
WhattypesofNCCommunityCollegeCoursesareavailable?
CollegeTransfercoursesallowstudentstogetaheadstartonsomegeneral educationcoursesthatmayberequiredata4-yearcollege/university.
Career&Technicalcoursesallowstudentstoexploretheirinterestsinspecific careeroptionsandpotentiallygetaheadstartonacareer.Studentscanearn collegecreditstowardajobcredential,certificate,ordiplomainatechnicalcareer.
CollegeTransfer/CareerTechnicalEligibilityRequirements:
Cumulative,unweightedGPAof2.8ORbenchmarkassessmentscoresinallareasof English,Reading,andMath. ForselectCareer&TechnicalPathways: Theydonotrequirea2.8GPAorqualifyingtestscore.

NorthCarolinaSchoolofScienceandMathematicsprovidesinteractivevideo conferencing(IVC)coursestoschoolsacrossNorthCarolina.Coursesareprovided tuition-free.
Withtwo-wayvideoconferencing,studentscollaborateinprojectteamsandwholeclassdiscussionswithstudentsatotherschoolsacrossthestate developingtheskills requiredbybusinessandindustry.NCSSMteachersmonitortheclassinrealtime, assessingstudentlearningandensuringthatstudentsengagewiththecourse materialsandwitheachother.

Thisprocessensurestimelyrecognitionofcreditsonthestudent'scollegetranscript.
CreditbyDemonstratedMastery(CDM)providesstudentswithanopportunitytoearn coursecreditwithoutcompletingtraditionalseattime.Throughthisprocess,students demonstrateadeepunderstandingofcoursecontent,skills,andstandardsequivalent tothoseexpectedofstudentswhocompletetheentirecourse.
TheCDMprocessisdesignedforself-motivated,high-achievingstudentswhohave alreadymasteredcoursematerialthroughpriorlearningexperiences,independent study,oradvancedacademicability.Successfulcompletionofbothrequiredphases resultsinfullcoursecreditandplacementintothenextsequentialcourse.
InorderforstudentstoqualifyfortheopportunitytoattemptCreditbyDemonstrated Mastery(CDM)foracourse,theymustmeetthefollowingcriteria:
AcademicPerformance:StudentsmusthaveearnedanAintheircurrentcontent areacoursethatprecedesthecoursetheyareseekingtoCDM.Forexample,a studentwishingtoCDMMath3musthaveafirst-semestergradeofAinMath2.
AssessmentBenchmark:StudentsmustalsomeetorexceedthedesignatedMAP scorethreshold,scoringinthe90thpercentileoraboveontheMAPassessmentin bothMathandReading.
ThesequalificationsaredesignedtoensurethatstudentspursuingCDMhave demonstratedbothstrongacademicachievementandreadinessforadvanced coursework.
StudentscompleteeitherastateEnd-of-Course(EOC)assessmentorateachermadecomprehensiveexam,dependingonthesubjectarea.
ToadvancetoPhase2,studentsmustmeetthefollowingminimumrequirements: EOCCourses:AchieveaLevel5onthestateEnd-of-Courseexam. Non-EOCCourses:Earna90%orhigherontheteacher-madecomprehensive exam.
StudentswhodonotmeetthesebenchmarkswillnotcontinuetoPhase2.
Thereisnoappealprocessforstudentswhodonotmeetthequalifyingcriteriain Phase1.
StudentswhoqualifyforPhase2willcompleteanartifactdemonstratingadeep understandingofthecontentstandardsofthecourse.

“Anartifactisademonstrationofdeepunderstandingandapplicationofknowledge, oftenthroughanextendedperformanceorproject.Theartifactallowsthestudentto applycontentknowledgetoreal-worldorauthenticcontexts,demonstratinganalysis, problem-solving,andconceptualconnectionsthatreflectmasterybeyondfactual recall.”
Studentswillcompletetheirartifactoverafour-weekperiodduringtheirassigned KnightTime.
TheartifactwillbereviewedandevaluatedbyaCDMReviewCommitteecomposed ofcontentareateachers,counselors,andadministrators.
ArtifactswillbescoredusingarubricalignedwithNorthCarolinacontentstandards anddepth-of-knowledgeexpectationsforthecourse.
Ascoreindicating“mastery”ontherubricisrequiredtoearnCDMcredit.
Ifastudentorparent/guardianisindisagreementwiththerecommendationsfrom theCDMReviewCommittee,theymayappealthedecisioninwritingwithin10days ofthedecision.Thepanelwillreviewtheappealwithin10daysofreceiptofthe appealandcollectadditionaldatarequiredbythepanel.Finalrecommendations willbemadewithin10daysafterappealsreview.
StudentswhowishtopursueCDMforaMathorSciencecoursethatrequirestheuse ofacalculatorwillbeissuedaschoolcalculatorforboththeexamandartifact completionperiod.
StudentsmustnotifytheirschoolcounselorbyNovember30oftheirintenttopursue CDMduringthecurrentschoolyear.
AmandatoryparentandstudentCDMinformationmeetingwillbeheldinJanuary foranystudentwishingtoCDMacourse.Attendanceatthismeetingisrequiredin ordertoproceedintheCDMprocess.Duringthemeeting,familieswillreceive detailedinformation,timelines,andallrequiredpaperwork.
