Discussion Forum: Soft Skills Adaptability and Work Ethics
Soft skills are important because they often represent your capacity to work with others and develop within an organization. They also help you build relationships and solve problems to use your hard skills to their full extent. Soft skills are learned, and it may take a long time for someone to hone their soft skills. The five key ideas that I have learned from adaptability and work ethics are:

• Adaptability in the workplace means being flexible and able to change in the environment in order to become successful. Employees must learn to manage unusual circumstances where there are no explicit instructions. They must also learn how to rest upon their own judgment and have the confidence to make difficult decisions.
• Being adaptable is important because it showcases a person’s ability to be
resourceful, displays their leadership skills, determination, analytical skills and more. These are all valuable qualities that an employer looks for in an employee. It is better to hone these soft skills as early as now.
• An adaptable person will be more valued as an employee. No matter the industry a person is in, it is not uncommon for there to be changes in the way a job is performed and the overall workplace environment. Because of this, employers want to hire employees who have the ability to adapt to these ongoing changes. Being adaptable shows the employer that one is able to handle new changes and challenges with ease.
• A strong work ethic allows a person to concentrate on duties, act professionally, persevere in difficult situations, and show responsibility and dependability in the workplace. People who have a high work ethic are often better employees than

those who do not, and hiring managers will frequently choose candidates with a strong work ethic over those who do not.
• A good work ethic means that a person is dedicated to seeing a project through to completion, no matter how challenging it may become. Having persistence and determination will help one reach his or her goals more effectively, work for longer periods of time, and stay focused on the task at hand without feeling frustrated or disheartened. The more committed a person is to complete his or her tasks, the better their work ethic will be.
I definitely agree that adaptability is a soft skill that must be given utmost importance in the workplace — even in school. Being adaptable means you are strongwilled in the face of hardships. Our environments are not pleasant all the time. In school, we might be grouped with classmates that we personally do not get along well with. However, we cannot do anything about it. It is not a valid reason to get transferred to another group. What we should do is to be civil, and try to work as much as we can with that person in order to accomplish the task or project assigned. The same can be also said for the workplace. If we get to have a co-worker that we do not vibe with, but is a person that we should work in close contact with, we should just learn how to be a team player. We should remember that being in a workplace means we should add value to the company, and not let our personal issues get in the way.
Work ethics is very critical too. It is important so that we can get the job done without any trouble. Discipline, determination, and persistence are factors needed to have work ethics skills. These soft skills are those that I have to develop further. I am not quite a determined person. I often need external factors to motivate me; thus, I should learn how to stay self-motivated. I also tend to quit during hard times. It is not acceptable in the workplace to just drop a project just because you are having a hard time accomplishing it. You will be valued less as an employee, and your co-workers will tend to view you in a negative way.
