Unmasking NARCISSISM

A DEEPER LOOK INTO THE IMPACTFUL DYNAMICS OF RELATIONSHIPS AND THE HEALING JOURNEY WITHIN By: Lee Levy – Dubai Life Coach

This is especially true when it comes to relationship abuse, whether it be emotional, physical, psychological, financial (yes, this exists), or sexual abuse.

The first reaction of any person subjected to the above is often to blame someone for their current position in their lives at that moment. That blame typically goes to the partner in the relationship and/or family or colleague, naming them narcissistic.

Narcissistic personality disorder (NPD) is a mental health condition that affects how you view yourself and relate to others. Having NPD means you have an excessive ‘need’ to impress others or feel important, and that need can be strong enough to drive harmful behaviors, negatively affecting you and those around you.

NPD, abbreviated in medical fields, gets its name from Narcissus, a hunter in Greek mythology. According to the myth, Narcissus was so obsessed with his own beauty that he couldn’t stop looking at his reflection in a pool of water. He did nothing else but stare at his reflection until he died.

While people commonly connect the term “narcissism” to physical appearance — just like in the myth — NPD isn’t just about how you look.

It can also involve other traits or abilities you have, such as intelligence, charisma, artistic skill, athletic ability, wealth, power, success, and more.

e are living in extremely interesting times in our beautiful world, where it’s so much easier to criticize and judge others than to compliment and wish one another well.

NARCISSISTIC BEHAVIOR IS NOT ONEDIMENSIONAL. Narcissistic behavior disorder will hurt and destroy others in the path of glorifying themselves in the face of society.

A narcissistic individual has an excessive sense of selfimportance and a deep need for admiration and attention.

They often have a grandiose sense of entitlement and lack empathy for others, believing that the world owes them a favor.

Narcissists tend to believe they are superior to others and may exploit or manipulate others to fulfill their own needs and desires. They can be charismatic and charming, though their behavior is often self-centered, manipulative, and lacking in genuine empathy. The manipulation to benefit from any environment is self-evident in their ability to be genuinely happy for the success of another.

They will hijack your moment of celebration by sharing a milestone in their life that is perceivably greater than yours.

Recently, I shared a moment of success being on the cover of the most prestigious luxury magazine, and to my awe, I painfully witnessed the response from individuals in my space. A minority were hijacking the moment with recent success stories of theirs, while another few were commenting on the high-resolution professional images. What this moment did was increase my self-awareness of the values I place/ placed on welcoming people into my space.

When I assessed these individuals on a closer level, I was and still am able to see the values that they truly possess, not the illusions I created

in my space of them. You see, we offer everyone the benefit of any doubt and create an illusional image of what they are supposed to be based on either who they are married to, how long we have known them, and/or their position in society.

Instead of calling it for what it is, a deeper assessment offers the conclusion of narcissistic behavior.

The symptoms of Narcissistic Personality Disorder that fall under the criteria may look like the following:

• Always insisting on their way, withdrawing from others to hide feeling vulnerable • Never admitting they are wrong • Manipulating environments to suit them due to their extreme fear of failure • Not committing to long-term relations, be that personal or professional • Extreme difficulty in accepting another’s opinion or point of view

• Self-created Grandiose sense of self-importance: Overestimating skills, knowledge, and capabilities or holding themselves to unreasonably high standards by bragging or exaggerating their achievements.

• Hijacking every conversation to speak more of themselves and their life

• Non-stop and frequent fantasies about having or deserving: Success, Power, Intelligence, Beauty, Love, Self-fulfillment.

• Rarely sincerely complimenting

• A strong belief in superiority: Consistently thinking they’re special or unique and believing they should associate only with those they see as worthy, increasing their need for admiration.

• Fragile self-esteem: Non-stop and frequent self-doubt, selfcriticism, or emptiness while being preoccupied with knowing what others think of them and always fishing for compliments.

• Entitlement: An inflated sense of self-worth while expecting favorable treatment (to an unreasonable degree) and getting angry when people don’t cater to or appease them.

• Willingness to exploit others: Consciously or unconsciously using others while forming friendships or relationships with people who boost their self-esteem or status, then deliberately taking advantage of others for selfish reasons.

• Lack of empathy: No hesitation in saying things that might hurt others and seeing the feelings, needs, or desires of others as a sign of weakness, never returning kindness or interest that others show in them as it removes their sense of importance.

• Jealousy and frequent envy: Constantly feeling envious of others, especially when others are successful, and hijacking the success moments of others by sharing their stories, living with strong expecting envy from others on their sometimes illusional success by belittling or diminishing the achievements of others.

• Non-stop arrogance: Consistently searching for weak personalities that they can patronize by behaving in a way that’s snobby or disdainful, additionally talking down or acting condescendingly towards others.

People with NPD may also show other behaviors related to the nine criteria, though different: • Not open to mutual agreements • Fear of or avoiding vulnerability

• Interrupting your excitement of your achievements with comparing theirs to yours

Narcissistic characteristics can include volatile behavior, lack of empathy, aggression, abuse, and may include gaslighting, constant criticism, humiliation, and coercion.

Additionally, during intimacy (sex), the following are strong red flags to be aware of: • Only in the mood when they desire • Require an enormous amount of praise afterward on how good they are in bed • Focus solely on physical pleasure and not increased intimacy and passion • Take serious offense when you share discomfort in their approach • Enjoy controlling the after-intimacy moments by either falling asleep or exiting the environment, leaving their partner cold.

All the above, in essence, indicates parts of the individual that require healing.

It’s common for someone who’s a narcissist to test your boundaries or ignore them entirely. Someone with NPD might read through your text messages, follow you around, or do things that you’ve asked them not to do. A substantial number of attempts to reinforce or set healthy boundaries may be met with arguments, anger, accusations, and vehement rejection of your limitations. And when they really want something, they will resort to manipulation, causing confusion, low self-esteem, anxiety, shame, and guilt for you.

You may also be manipulated to stay home, not go to work, engage in sexual acts, or spend money on the narcissist by illusionally believing that this will get you closer to them.

Here’s the trick though: When you are able to recognize the behavior in another without anger, criticism, or judgment, then your soul is present.

When you recognize the above with anger, criticism, and a deep sense of judging the narcissist, your ego has been activated.

What is teeth sensitivity?

Teeth sensitivity usually occurs when the underlying layer of your teeth — the dentin — becomes exposed. This can happen due to erosion (wear and tear) and gum recession (when your gum tissue pulls away from your teeth, exposing the roots).

Dental sensitivity can also be a symptom of other issues, including cavities, gum disease or a cracked tooth.

3.

Use a soft-bristled toothbrush: This will result in less toothbrush abrasion to the tooth surface and less irritation to your gums.

4.

Watch what you eat: Frequent consumption of highly acid foods can gradually dissolve tooth enamel and lead to dentin exposure. They may also aggravate the sensitivity and start the pain reaction.

5.

Use fluoridated dental products: Daily use of a fluoridated mouth rinse can decrease sensitivity. Ask your dentist about available products for home use.

6.

Avoid teeth grinding: If you grind or clench your teeth, use a mouth guard at night.

7.

See your dentist regularly: Get routine professional exams, cleanings and fluoride treatments.

n today’s world, sustainable development has become a vital part of a country’s development and economic future.

Urbanization, industrialization, and globalization coupled with a rapidly increasing global population have all led to putting a tremendous amount of strain on the world’s natural resources. It is estimated that by 2050, the world will need the equivalent of three planets to provide the natural resources required to continue current lifestyles. Sustainable development tries to achieve a fine balance between today’s economic, social, and environmental progress without thwarting future generational needs.

Qatar’s National Vision 2030 (QNV 2030) aims to achieve just that. The vision is a master plan and roadmap towards making Qatar an advanced society that is ready to compete in the 21st century; environmentally, economically, and socially, while providing high standard of living levels to its citizens. This robust vision seeks to provide the private sector as well as individuals guidelines and direction. Many companies today, include this vision in their mission statements. Furthermore, it tries to assist government-led strategies, policies, and allocation of funds towards a united goal.

Finally, the vision identifies long-term plans for the country by providing a framework to which national strategies can be developed and implemented.

Secondly, meeting the societal and economical needs of today without compromising future generational needs.

Thirdly, managing economic growth and uncontrolled expansion. Fourthly, preserving a selected path of development and equilibrium between Qataris and the expatriate labor force.

Finally, engaging in good environmental management, economic growth, and social development. The State of Qatar aspires to face these challenges and achieve these goals through four pillars: human development, social development, economic development, and, environmental development. When it comes to human development, Qatar has made immense improvements and will continue to make advances in a knowledge-based education as well as developing a world class health care system.

The social development pillar reflects making social changes to advance Qatar’s society and to keep up with the demands of the future. This will also require preserving Qatar’s heritage and traditions. Today, Qatar is promoting tolerance and openness while also empowering woman. Economically, Qatar is finding a balance between its hydrocarbon resources while making significant strides in diversifying its economy in nonenergy sectors. Ultimately, a knowledge-based education will yield a knowledgebased economy. Finally, environmentally, Qatar has acknowledged the importance of finding an evenness between economic growth while at the same time protecting the environment. Qatar continues to work with

Dr. Shaher holds a bachelors degree in political science from SUNY Plattsburgh, a masters degree in international affairs from the School of International Affairs at Pennsylvania State University, and a PhD in political science from Howard University. Dr. Shaher’s studies focus on political science, public policy/public administration, sustainable development, and American government. His PhD dissertation focused on whether the United States Constitution is undemocratic and dysfunctional with regards to some of its features and whether those defects can be amended. His work/ writings focus on democracy, sustainable development, Senate malapportionment, the electoral college, Article V, countermajoritarian topics found in American politics and the Constitution, and Middle Eastern affairs with a particular focus on Egypt and American-Arab diplomatic and political relations. Currently Dr. Zakaria is an assistant professor of political science at Lusail University – Qatar.

INAUGURAL FORUM ON HISTORY EDUCATION

atar National Library is kicking off the New Year with the first of its kind event to touch on Qatari history education.

Dubbed the “Inaugural Forum for Teaching and Learning Qatari History,” the two-day event will open up new avenues of discussion on the various aspects of educating people on Qatari history and heritage from a scientific perspective.

The Forum, which takes place on 30 and 31 January and brings together academics and experts along with representatives from the Ministry of Education and Higher Education, will also discuss QNL’s collaboration efforts with diverse national cultural institutions in this regard.

The Forum will cap a series of events that QNL has planned for the month starting with a workshop on 6 January “How We Can Manage Daily Conflicts”. The workshop will highlight the importance of understanding conflicts, their causes and the best approach to ensure successful relationships.

On 14 January, the focus will turn to the fight against the illicit trafficking of cultural property with a webinar by the Library’s Himaya project under the theme “Addressing Looting through Digitization”.

The webinar, held by the International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions (IFLA) PAC Regional Centre at QNL, will discuss the importance of digitization in protecting cultural property with a focus on the Turathi project, a web-based tool used by law enforcement to identify vulnerable cultural goods at high risk for looting and trafficking.

The webinar will bring together Peter Herdrich, the co-founder of the Antiquities Coalition in the U. S., and Helena Arose, the Coalition’s director of programs, along with Abir Chorfa, the Program Manager that supervised the implementation of the Turathi project in Algeria.

On 18 January, the Library’s members can explore QNL’s online platform, Britannica Education, to learn how digital solutions can empower educators and help learners develop their research skills. On 20 January, multimedia enthusiasts will have the opportunity to explore the world of smartphone videography with a focus on capturing the beauty of QNL’s book collections and stunning architecture. The “Mommy-to-Be Speaker Series” returns on January 28, with a focus on Montessori education. Enas Al Hadidi, an educator for positive discipline and a Montessori instructor, will discuss the importance of the second year in toddlers’ life, and how parents and caregivers can prepare the environment to support children.

She also developed, perhaps like many others during this time, a growing interest in her personal skincare routine, experimenting with a more holistic and natural approach to her skincare routine, which Nabilah now shares with LLQ Magazine below.

Gua Sha is an ancient Chinese facial massage practice; it’s a natural alternative therapy that relieves tension in the muscles of the face. A bit similar to a facial workout, it involves gently scraping the surface of the skin to boost blood circulation, smoothing and brightening your complexion. Not only does Gua Sha encourage lymphatic drainage, but it also helps produce more collagen, decrease facial puffiness, and soften fine lines and wrinkles. It’s an easy, natural, and effective way to detox the skin and combat aging.

Gua Sha, if done regularly, effectively rejuvenates the skin and sculpts facial muscles. If used on the jawline and cheekbone area, Gua Sha can help release tight facial muscles and give the temporary appearance of a more sculpted face. It won’t get rid of a double chin (as it can’t target fat), but it could help ease puffiness in the short term.

What is First of all, some of you may be asking, “What exactly is Gua Sha?” The Gua Sha stone is a tool that combines ancient healing rituals with modern beauty techniques and is incredibly effective for people of all ages, skin types, and lifestyles. No fancy equipment or instruction manual required – just you and your gorgeous stone as you enjoy a relaxing facial massage from your living room.

Also sometimes referred to as a jade scraper, it’s a little flat pebble of natural jade or rose quartz stone. There are many variations in the shape and size of the tool currently out on the market, including electric Gua Sha, but essentially the technique and benefits are the same. (Regardless)

If you’re struggling with dark under-eye circles, Gua Sha could help reduce their appearance. As Gua Sha helps soften fine lines and stimulates natural collagen, the technique could temporarily reduce dark circles and tighten the skin.

Not only is it an effective aesthetic technique for the skin, but it also aids in deep facial relaxation and helps reduce headaches and neck pain if done regularly.

It’s important to add that while Gua Sha is a great noninvasive technique, it cannot always be combined with other procedures. For example, if you have had facial Botox or injectables within the past three to four weeks, you’ll need to wait at least four weeks from your most recent injection before beginning a Gua Sha routine. Patient Satisfaction and Perspectives on Self-Management Education Programs:

A QUALITATIVE

STUDY

Patients and Methods Twenty-five participants from five Arab Nationals SME programs to conduct focus groups were recruited. An inductive approach using grounded theory as an overall methodology orientation for the thematic analysis process has been followed. The study was reported in compliance with the consolidated criteria for reporting qualitative research criteria (COREQ).

Purpose According to the Centre for Disease Control and Prevention, “Selfmanagement education (SME) refers to programs that help people who have ongoing health conditions learn how to live life to the fullest”. Most studies to date have focused on SME outcomes, such as the acquisition of predefined knowledge or skills or quality of life. However, no study has yet investigated patients’ satisfaction with SMEs. The aim of the present study was therefore to explore participants’ subjective appreciation of SME programs using qualitative methods and formulate propositions based on patients’ preferences to improve ultimately clinical outcomes.

Results Patients expressed great satisfaction concerning the effective delivery of SME sessions. They appreciated the considerations for their concerns and needs, the adaptation of sessions’ content to their interests and questions and learning to take care of themselves.

Moreover, patients had a positive opinion on the quality of their relationship with health care providers. However, the major point of improvement of SMEs was the opportunity to repeat the program if needed, as this opportunity was not offered. This

consideration was particularly salient when patients did not consider themselves autonomous for disease management at the end of the program when they had low levels of perceived selfefficacy.

Conclusion While patients expressed great satisfaction regarding SME programs, our results suggest that some changes might be needed to make the endpoint of SME interventions coincide with the patient’s perception of self-efficacy in disease selfmanagement and ultimately improve clinical outcomes.
