The Editor’s Note The Rhythm of Gratitude and New Beginnings! Welcome December –a month to remind us to be thankful for all the positive things and blessings in our lives. Wishing you all peace, love, and happiness for the new month and the upcoming New Year! As Middle Easterns, we crave for winters. In fact, our desire for the cool breezes and refreshing days after long scorching sunlight summers is almost obsessive. The gorgeous winters of Qatar ask for a leisure timeout with your spouse –a relaxing getaway at the Alwadi MGallery’s MSpa is surely a good idea to welcome the season. Check out our experience at this relaxing retreat and do give it a shot. Because, why not? Obviously, after a whole year of dealing with the harsh reality of the Pandemic, this year, our longing for winters is more intense. With almost 90% of our population having received their doses of vaccine, optimism is building. Our levels of expectations are getting higher for this season’s tourism, buoyed by the reality, we are slowly shuffling towards normalcy. Speaking of tourism, food has a very important effect on the overall travel experience. Travelers’ engagement with the local food can be exceptional as it plays the role of psychological comfort and influences the development of their attachment to the destination. That’s why we have interviewed the famous Chef Salvatore Silvestrino of the City Center Rotana, Doha. We’ve discussed about his award-winning fusion and slow cooker recipes and how his recipes are making people come back for more.

IWC LAUNCHES CERAMIC CHRONOGRAPHS

Inspi red B y

Its Collaborations With U.s. Navy Squadrons

Schaffhausen, 9th September 2021 – IWC Schaffhausen has launched three new chronographs in its Pilot’s Watches collection. The new ceramic models are directly inspired by timepieces that the brand created in the context of its military programme in collaboration with selected squadrons of the U.S. Navy. The Pilot’s Watches Chronograph Editions “Royal Maces”, “Tophatters”, and “Blue Angels®” all feature the respective squadron patch on the dial and eyecatching details in the corresponding unit’s colour scheme.

12

E

ver since IWC engineered the first Pilot’s Watch 85 years ago, the company has fostered an in-depth dialogue with pilots to precisely understand their specific needs and requirements. This exchange has been particularly crucial for developing the brand’s mil-spec service watches, like the Mark 11 for the British Royal Air Force. Today, IWC continues this dialogue within the frame of its military program, which emerged from the brand’s partnership with the U.S. Navy. Since 2018, IWC is licensed to work on watches for the entire U.S. Navy and Marine Corps aviation units, including Blue Angels® and the 247 active and 100 inactive squadrons. IWC has since collaborated with more than a dozen squadrons to create special editions that are exclusively available to present and former members. “The IWC military programme is an important platform for our engineers and designers to exchange ideas with elite pilots from the U.S. Navy and other armed forces around the world. These pilots put our watches to the test every day in the harsh environment of the jet cockpit. Their feedback is invaluable for us not only to improve the quality and durability of our timepieces but also to create unique and appealing designs,” explains Christoph Grainger-Herr, CEO of IWC Schaffhausen. Now, IWC releases three new chronographs in its Pilot’s Watches collection, which are directly inspired by the brand’s collaborations with U.S. Navy squadrons, marking the first time these designs are available to nonpilots. The annual production of these chronographs will be limited to 500 pieces each.

MAESTRO REF GC2.0-A AND GC3.0-A The Maestro story continues

F

our new Gerald Charles Maestro references enter the family-owned company’s continuous collection

this spring, Gerald Charles is pleased to introduce four new references of the Gérald Genta-designed ultra-thin and chronograph sports watch into its continuous collection.

Following the successful release of the Maestro Premier 2021 Editions earlier

The Maestro Premier 2021 Editions were both limited-edition watches, created to signpost the future direction of Gerald Charles’s continuous collection. These pieces are now here.

The new Gerald Charles Maestro GC2.0-A Automatic and Maestro GC3.0-A Chronograph watches have stainless steel cases, and will both be available with either a black or emerald green palette. While neither will be a limited-edition, they will be limited in annual production in keeping with the company’s watch creation philosophy. ‘The Maestro is the Gerald Charles signature design and a perpetual tribute to the legacy of the company’s great founder, Monsieur Gérald Charles Genta,’ said Federico Ziviani, the company’s general manager. ‘The hugely

14

popular Premier 2021 Editions were a preview of what was to come and sold faster than expected. Now, these new models in steel continue the story and open up Gerald Charles to new generations of watch lovers.’ As well as being an ultra-thin, lightweight watch that both men and women can wear elegantly on the wrist across codes and styles, the 39mm Maestro is designed to be a high-performing sports watch. The GC2.0-A Automatic weighs just 85 grams, and the GC3.0-A Chronograph 110 grams, and yet both are water-resistant to 100 metres and have advanced levels of shock resistance, too.

NEW TWO-TONE CASE AND SHADES OF GREY FOR THE CODE 11.59 BY AUDEMARS PIGUET TOURBILLON OPENWORKED

Le Brassus, September 2021 – Swiss Haute Horlogerie manufacturer Audemars Piguet presents a new iteration of its 41 mm Code 11.59 by Audemars Piguet Tourbillon Openworked. The handfinished openworked movement adorning different shades of grey is housed in a two-tone case interweaving 18-carat white and pink gold. This gold combination highlights the case’s multifaceted geometry, while providing an elegant contrast.

Two-tone gold cases are rare at Audemars Piguet yet an integral part of the Manufacture’s history. Out of the 550 complicated wristwatches produced and sold between 1882 and 1969, only 8 examples combined two types of gold. The blend of white and pink gold was exceptional, with only one wristwatch recorded in the Manufacture’s archives before 1978. Although, this combination has become more prevalent in recent decades, it remains a distinct symbol of refinement.

”

T

he two-tone case emphasizes the complex architecture of the Code 11.59 by Audemars Piguet. Its extra-thin bezel, stylised lugs and round caseback, all crafted in 18-carat white gold, are subtly contrasted with an 18-carat pink gold octagonal middle case. Each component has been hand finished down to the smallest detail with an alternation of satin-brushing and polished chamfers. The technical complexity notably resides in reaching perfect alignment across the case’s multiplicity of angular and rounded surfaces – an aesthetic only achievable by hand.

“The architectural nature of the Code 11.59 by Audemars Piguet makes it the ideal canvas for complex and openworked mechanisms, as the case and movement seamlessly

unified

aesthetic.

Taking

inspiration from the 2019 Only Watch unique piece, the new 26600CR openworked tourbillon features a multitoned grey openworked movement housed within a white gold case with a pink gold octagonal middle case. The entire creation is an expression of hand-finishing and contemporary design that can only be achieved when our talented watchmakers, craftspeople, technicians, engineers and product experts work hand-in-hand on behalf of our clients that expect the extraordinary.”

AN AWARD WINNING SHORT FILM

Q

atar based Yemeni-East African visual storyteller Shaima AlTamimi is well known for her exploration of themes such as migration, identity and culture through introspection and a deeply-rooted documentary method of storytelling. Using photography, film, audio and writing as mediums, Shaima merges historical and family archives with present-day portraits and imagery to create her vivid narratives. Challenging mainstream and linear notions of identity, Shaima’s work offers unique perspectives into the lives of her subjects and calls for a more nuanced understanding of native experiences. Al-Tamimi’s 2021 film ‘Don’t Get Too Comfortable’ is a heartfelt reflective letter to her late grandfather who migrated to East Africa from Yemen and continues to explore patterns of movement through generational uprooting. Shaima aims to bring into perspective the process of dealing with generational trauma and the Yemeni migration, where one of her sole aim is to encourage others to vocalize their stories, to spread a greater awareness of the constant ordeal and uncertainties people face whilst on their journey to search for a permanent home. Shaima states, “As a Yemeni, it is utterly frustrating to witness a muffled and onesided narrative told about Yemen. Our story with migration started over centuries ago as we crossed oceans to East Africa, India and Britain to trade and work under the colonial rule.” As of November 2021, the film ‘Don’t Get Too Comfortable’ has won the Bronze Tanit Award at the 32nd edition of Carthage Film Festival, 2021 in Tunis; and is currently being screened at Doha’s Ajyal Film Festival, 2021 in the ‘Made-in-Qatar’ and the international shorts section.

THE PERFUME MUSEUM By Reem Abu Issa

The first of its kind within the region – was opened at The Pearl Qatar on the 28th of October, including thousands of one of a kind collections dating back from 1800 to the 1900s.

The opening was beneath the support of Sheik Hassan Al Thani “Vice Chairperson of Qatar Galleries Authority” who gone to the occasion, taken after by Ahmad Al Namla “CEO Qatar Museums”, Ashraf Abu Issa “Chairman of Abu Issa Holding”, and Issa Abu Issa.

N

estled by the sea in the heart of The PearlQatar, The Perfume Museum by Reem Abu Issa is a unique and alluring trip back in time to resurrect an ancient and mystical luxury object. The Perfume Museum is over a two-decade-long dream of Reem Abu Issa. A personal creative expression and an ever-growing passion for artistry. The museum showcases valuable, rare, and historically important perfumes of the past decades, when rising perfume makers collaborated with talented glass makers and fashion designers in order to create the most intriguing perfume bottles as objects of luxury, creativity and art.

22

“Since my family has always been in the perfume business, we were one of the first people to bring commercial perfume bottles to Qatar. As a child, I used to collect miniatures and then I decided to collect bottles instead 20 years ago, and I thought I would share it with people,” she recounted.

Some of the collections include 1960 Rolex and 1926 Rolls Royce-inspired perfume bottles, as well as a miniature 1952 Rue dela Paix lamp post and several other French-inspired designs. She said The Perfume Museum, which shows “rare and historical critical fragrances of the past decades”, resulted in a collaboration between skilled glass makers and design architects “to make the foremost charming aroma bottles as objects of extravagance, imagination and art”.

“It’s pleasant to have something like this (The Perfume Museum) for individuals to perhaps present something distinctive. For many, perfumes are continuously a perfume but there’s more to it, so that’s how it begun, it is more of an artwork. “I think it’s pleasant to have something like this in our region, it’s something special, I like my collection a lot and I want to share it with people. It’s only for them to enjoy and I try to put as much information as I could about perfumes for them to come and maybe to learn something new,” she said.

The Museum gives guests an opportunity to walk down a memory path “of fragrances and scent along the Silk Road – a network of trade routes connecting Asia and Europe with the Middle East as the crux”. They can moreover learn the method of perfume-making: “from crude fixings to extraction, refining, detailing, industrialization and bottling”. “This is basically a historical center of commercia perfume bottles. We attempt to grant individuals a journey around (aroma) fixings and how the Middle easterner World contributed to the improvement of perfumery,” museum owner Reem Abu Issa said on the sidelines of the occasion.

Following the artistic perfume bottles, a unique collection of early cosmetics from Kohls, face powders, compacts, and lipsticks are also on show. “It’s more of an interactive museum and then you got some collections and unique pieces from R Lalique and Baccarat,” Abu Issa said, adding that many of the collection are French perfumes.

INTERVIEW WITH DON GRANT, AN ENGLAND-BASED ARTIST By Farhat Naweed

Don Grant is a self-taught artist and philanthropist based in Manchester, UK. He creates bright and colorful visual images on canvas. He loves art and makes people happy with his artwork.

28

How did you choose a career as an artist?

What motivates you?

I have been involved in art and graphics for over 40 years after studying at an art college for 2 years. When I got my first job, I became a graphic designer and worked in an excellent, busy advertising agency in Manchester. I now work for myself and, at present, my one-man artwork business has been running for nearly 5 years. I have a stall and I work and sell my artwork at Altrincham Craft Market every week. I also sell online at www.dongrantwallart. co.uk.

Art has always been my first love and has been a great passion in my life. Ever since I can remember, I have been drawing and painting things since I was a child. I love to produce portraits or northern images of where I live. My style is individual with a strong pop art influence on some of my works. I produce a lot of commissioned works and I can do that for you, so please feel free to contact me if you would like some of my original bespoke artwork to hang on your walls. “

What inspires you?

Is there an artist you look up to?

I have been drawing and painting ever since I can remember. I was inspired as a child by watching art and craft programmes (Vision on). I would sit in front of the TV, drawing cartoon characters. My love for art has grown from those very early days and has been just a way of life for me ever since. It still gives me great pleasure to create something different and new.

“I wouldn’t say I have a favorite artist in particular, but I will look at any artist’s work.”

“I like modern art, e.g., brightly colored pop art images. The images and colors just pour out of the pictures.”

What do you think are the benefits and drawbacks of being an artist? I don’t see any drawbacks to being an artist. If there was one drawback, I would say there is definitely not enough time in a day/s to create all the ideas and images that come into my head. I never stop thinking about art and painting. “I am very fortunate to be able to do what I am doing, because my work is also my hobby.”

Would you like to say something about your “homeless project” in Manchester? In my spare time, I am heavily involved with the Homeless Project Manchester. This is a group of likeminded volunteers whose objective is to help any homeless people we find living on the “walkabout route” we take in the City Centre. We have been operating under our own steam for nearly ten years. We are not a charity, and we depend and survive on donations from the public and various supermarket chains to help us clothe and feed any of those unfortunate people we meet living on the streets. My homeless work is sad but very rewarding, and as I always tell everybody, “I’m just giving a bit back.”

BEAUTIFUL SMILE By Dr. Nour

N 34

ot all of us are born with a beautiful smile, but with a good oral hygiene routine, and a little help from orthodontics, you can have a beautiful and healthy smile. Braces and orthodontic treatment are used to correct bad bites or Malocclusion (teeth that are crowded or crooked). In some cases, your teeth may be straight but your upper and lower jaws may not meet properly.

In many cases, these jaw and tooth alignment problems may be inherited or result from injury, early or late tooth loss, or sometimes thumb sucking may lead to this problem.

Small tips for the people who have braces on their mouths:

If you have an abnormal bite, your dentist may recommend braces or another orthodontic treatment to straighten out your smile. And of course, correcting the problem can create a nice-looking smile, but more importantly, orthodontic treatment results in a healthier mouth.

Of course, a healthy diet is always important, but eating too many sugary foods with braces can lead to plaque buildup around your brackets that could permanently stain or damage your teeth.

Straightening your teeth can be accomplished in different ways. The kind of orthodontic treatment you have will depend on your preference and the options provided by your dentist or orthodontist.

Avoiding foods like popcorn, corn on the cob, chewing gum, whole apples, and other sticky foods is also a good idea. Ask your dentist about foods to avoid while you are in treatment.

There are many different types of orthodontic treatments, such as: 1.

2.

Traditional braces realign teeth by applying pressure. They usually consist of small brackets cemented to your teeth, connected by a wire, which is periodically tightened. The brackets may be metal or toothcolored. Sometimes they are placed behind your teeth under the direct supervision of the dentist or orthodontist. Removable aligners are another option for treating orthodontic problems.

M SPA AT ALWADI MGALLERY DOHA –THE ULTIMATE RELAXATION WITH LUXURY

By Leslie Fernandez

M

Spa offers the guests an opportunity to experience the ecstasy that would be otherwise absent from the daily pursuit of life. The M Spa at the Al Wadi Hotel MGallery Doha has become the standard for others to follow. Yes! The bar is set, and raised, every so often that other spas simply play the catch up to the aesthetically crafted worldclass M Spa that calls Qatar home.

An Oasis of Serenity, the M Spa of Alwadi MGallery defines the Apex of Spa Retreat combining Holistic Wellness

As a lifestyle enthusiast, I’ve had tons of spa treatments. However, M

what you must read about.

M Spa offers a variety of spa treatments that cater to everyone. It’s a perfect blend of elegance, splendor, and opulence with luxury.

Indulging in the finest experiences to escape from the daily hustle and bustle of life –M Spa is not just a therapy, it’s the extraordinary serene environment with the blend of latest and ancient therapeutic experience that makes the destination remarkable.

The place offers its guests a lavish, comfy architecture with boutique spa facilities. It’s a relaxing, stylish, and blissful paradise setting at the heart of Doha.

Spa is amongst the ones that are truly exceptional. And so, the incredibly good spa experience at M Spa situated at the Alwadi MGallery Hotel is

42

The concept of M Spa at Alwadi MGallery Hotel is envisioned as a sanctuary, a soothing escape tucked inside the grand property. The most unique element of the M Spa is the grandeur and stylish décor in calm tones creating luxurious and alluring warmth as you step in. The transitional lighting within the reception, to the foyer, and relaxation areas, and finally to the total controlled relaxing darkness of the treatment rooms just bring in the calmness. The visitors of M Spa are always taken to a tour of the treatment area and spa boutique for a closer look at the modern treatment settings, natural Arabic oils, and healing products that are specially designed for M Spa. We were of course greeted with a smile and welcome drink at the reception. This wasn’t just any ordinary welcome drink, it was an MGallery exclusive cocktail, something really unique indeed. The first thing I’ve noticed is how serene the M Spa is in its design. A comfy lobby at which we sat and walked past to get to the treatment rooms. The M Spa offers wellness retreats through an extensive range of therapies and a list of specialists to choose from. They even offer special massages for expectant mothers and post-partum women. It took us a while to appreciate the extent of their spa menu. The therapist guided us about the treatment we should take after asking us the necessary questions regarding our health and fitness issues. Yes, a spa treatment starts off with a personalized consultation where the guests are served with herbal tea accompanied by the warm smiles of the spa therapist.

After a detailed consultation, we decided to have the M Spa’s signature massage.

The Extraordinary M Spa Massage Experience

Our therapist was truly professional in her craft. She used a combination of Asian and Western therapy techniques including deep tissue, relaxing, nurturing, and sculpting. This M Spa’s exclusive massage blew my mind! It was a whole body-awakening experience with a blend of therapeutic massage techniques using multiple-intensity and frequent strokes. Long strokes improved lymphatic drainage and blood circulation. Swedish deep tissue techniques work into muscle relaxation to relieve stiffness and tension. Thai movements added elements of stretching to increase flexibility. With every stroke, I slipped deeper into relaxation, even drifting off to the sea of calmness. I dozed off for 5-10 minutes during the massage. It’s like the therapist knew exactly which places held the most strain and how to distress every bit of my body. The feeling of tension dissolved with the ninety minutes M Spa’s signature massage. This exclusive healing therapy combines gentle stretching, skin rolling, and long therapeutic strokes to relieve strains. The balanced pressure with palm and thumb techniques unraveled the deepest stress and improved the blood flow. It was extremely soothing and released all the stress from my mind and body. Sadly, the massage was soon over after 60-minutes. It was surely the best 60 minutes of my life. We were then sent to a beautifully designed seating corner and served with hot lemongrass tea to finish. From the beginning to the end, this treatment was undoubtedly a flawless experience of ultimate relaxation. We were asked about our experience with the M Spa by the friendly staff. There’s nothing to complain about because it was all perfect. Not only do I recommend you to visit the M Spa at the Alwadi MGallery, I urge you!

Once our therapy was decided, we were escorted to the treatment rooms that were equipped with amazingly comfortable massage tables and spa essentials. We were guided to the changing rooms and when we got back to our treatment rooms, they were scented with soothing and refreshing Arabic fragrances and the lights were dimmed to create a comfortable ambiance. The therapists at M Spa use exclusive ingredients in their spa treatments that are sourced from organic and natural resources. The Arabic oils and herbs were all-natural and cold-pressed to maintain all the goodness.

ABOUT COFFEE

What is Johanna Ortiz’ favourite

How

does

Johanna

enjoy

drinking her coffee?

My favourite coffee is Master Origin Colombia, as it evokes the flavors of home, with its fruity and sweet notes and red berry aromas.

Coffee is a part of my morning ritual; I take a moment for me over a cup of coffee before meditating and working out, and always before my three boys wake up and the busy morning really begins.

What is special about Colombian coffee to Johanna? Colombian coffee is so special because it enables me to support the coffee farmers of my native country. It’s one of our cultural treasures to preserve and I also absolutely love the delicious flavor of course!

Which is Johanna’s favorite coffee from the festive range? My favorite coffee from the Festive range is Forest Black, a spicy espresso that celebrates shadegrown Arabica coffees from Colombia and beyond.

“ABOU T TH E COL L ABOR ATIO”

How does Johanna Ortiz enjoy drinking her coffee? Coffee is a part of my morning ritual; I take a moment for me over a cup of coffee before meditating and working out, and always before my three boys wake up and the busy morning really begins.

47

What does sustainability mean to Johanna? Sustainability has so many meanings to me. The planet needs our commitment to learn how to act as thoughtfully and responsibly as we can every day, in every way. Our communities, locally and globally need to be supported in order to protect ancient crafts, trades and heritages. Through many efforts, large and small, we need to protect these natural beauties for generations to come.

What small changes has Johanna made to

How does Johanna educate her children on

her life to become more sustainable?

the importance of sustainability?

Sustainability is embedded in all our actions and processes, it is part of our business model around making the right decisions and choices.

I want them to have a strong ideal when it comes to caring for the planet, we talk everyday about small acts that start at home in our day-to-day lives that will create a difference in the long term. Also, I try to show them the importance of giving back to their people, their country and the world in general. I believe in opportunities and the power of working together for a same ideal and that is something I try to teach them every day.

We are making a big effort to increase the percentage of upcycled and certified materials in our collections, but I think our main differentiator relies on the social dimension of sustainability by producing locally, creating jobs, investing in women’s development and rising with our artisans. Finally, we believe in the value of making our products at home in Colombia, caring for every detail, while generating social inclusion and recognizing the importance of growing hand in hand with our people.

How does Johanna bring sustainability into her fashion designs? We strive to put suitability first and foremost in everything we do at Johanna Ortiz. We collaborate seasonally with local artisans to support their trades and craftsmanship, as well as community. The objects themselves tell the story as our “Made with Love” labels honor each piece’s provenance with the name of the talented artisan who made it with care.

48

How does Johanna incorporate sustainability into her business? Through our Escuela, we offer local women from my hometown Cali, embroidery and seamstress courses free of charge. FUSION REVOLUTION AND SLOW-COOK FOOD ENTHUSIASM: AN INTERVIEW WITH AWARD-WINNING CHEF SALVATORE SILVESTRINO The Napoli born chef Salvatore Silvestrino has been casting his

The Inspiration Lifestyle chats with the star chef to find out about his fusion cooking secrets, fine flavors, and slow-cooking enthusiasm that is making its mark on the culinary map of Doha.

Becoming a chef is not an easy career to pursue. It needs sheer dedication and hard work to reach the high skies of the culinary space. We asked Chef Salvatore what made him decide to become a chef. He replied, “My dad loves food and enjoys a great food night out as well, and then there is my mum who is an absolute firecracker in the kitchen, she instilled in me that willingness to further my knowledge of food and that passion to create.”

The Life in the Kitchen Handling a professional culinary workspace is with exceptional expertise is something Salvatore is an expert in. We asked Salvatore how he managed to do all that with such calmness. He replied, “Yes, I have worked in some amazing countries and all of them have provided me with different learnings and habitual routines when it comes to food. Regardless of which country you live and work in, you adjust yourself culturally to absorb as much as you can. There is no pressure living in Qatar like there was no pressure living in Singapore or wherever else I have worked. Life in the kitchen can be extremely pressured if you let it be or are not up to the task. I love my job hence every day is a new beginning and a new chapter to write about.”

About the Arabic Cuisine Since our star chef has been an enthusiast of slowcooking, we asked him about what slow-cooked recipes he found interesting in Arabic cuisine. Here’s his reply. “There are way too many to mention or write about, but if I was to name one that stands out, it is Harissa, WOW! Cooked wheat with chicken or Lamb until it becomes this porridge, almost mastic like consistency, accentuated by the smell of coriander, cumin and a little drizzle of ghee.”

Making a mark with Fusion Cuisine in Doha Being a Napoli chef with soul, how has the fusion of different cuisine influenced your career? We asked, and the chef replied with a grin.

Professionally Reinventing the Slow-cooked Delicacies

“I am from Napoli the city of a thousand smells and influences but we are as passionate about life as we are about food. I would have to say that I have masticated over a million recipes and chewed over a million menus in my lifetime so far.

Slow cooking is something that resembles the feeling of home, an echo of a family’s grand welcome to a homecoming, something that remind you of warmth and love. We asked the chef about the feedback he is getting for his slow-cooked dishes as, according to our knowledge, Salvatore is much into slow cooking. We got the answer,

And yes, every cuisine and every culture has influenced my cooking style and my career and every single menu, I have created. But I am still traditionally centered when it comes to Italian cuisine.”

“I like slow cooking; I love braising and adore roasting at low temperatures for long periods. The young chefs that did not fully grasp the idea of slow cooking are embracing it more and more and guests that love a stew or casserole fully appreciate it being cooked for 5 to 6 hours. “

The Chef Salvatore’s exclusive menu for the

Getting reconnected to the Food A lot of people in our modern culture think they either don’t want to cook or say they don’t have time to cook. We asked Chef Salvatore how he would encourage Gen Z to get reconnected with their food. The chef gave us an inspirational reply. “Food should not be used to fill you up when you are hungry but rather nourish your soul. The people need to reconnect with food because food is about that moment in time when you were a kid and sat at the table with your parents and conversed about the day. I can recall a million dishes and where exactly I ate that dish and with whom. Whenever I cook something, I always go back to that early memory and how it made me feel.”

City Center Rotana Doha Every chef creates his menu that comes from his years-long culinary experiences, the diversity of ingredients, the savory and sweetness of spices, and of course, his own signature style. When we asked Chef Salvatore about the menu at City Center Rotana Doha, he explained. “The menus at City Centre Rotana are a reflection of my travels, my experiences, my learnings, and the diversity that one learns from the varied cultures you work with.” This interview with Chef Salvatore get us really inspired to visit the City Center Rotana and indulge in his signature savory menus. Would like to catch up with us there?

we can support each other in sisterhood. This is also a platform to bring together women in Qatar who are looking to connect with other women and share their innovative ideas. Women in Circle platform will help them to support each other whenever they are seeking some solutions to their concerns.

you envision empowering women Qatar? Emerging from a complete renovation, this cultural symbol features extraordinary 1980s architecture highlighting the region’s exquisite designs, while catering to the needs of the modern social travellers. As Qatar’s iconic landmark, Sheraton is located in the heart of Doha, offering spectacular views of the city’s skyline. Over the last four decade, the hotel has earned its name for offering a warm ambience and impeccable personalized service that bestows discerning travellers and guests with unforgettable experiences. At Sheraton, we have always believed in maintaining our legacy and keep working hard. It’s about how we make that emotional connect with our guests – and it is with this very intent we have a whole host of lifestyle events planned under our umbrella. Through this exclusive Women’s Circle platform, Sheraton Grand Doha Resort & Convention Hotel aims to bring together amazing women to share, discuss and witness each other’s journeys in a safe and enriching way, so 54

It is also one of Marriott’s Core Values – `We serve our world` and through such empowering initiatives, we commit ourselves to create a positive impact wherever we do business globally.

Please highlight your partnership with Anahi to empower women in Qatar Sheraton Grand Doha Resort & Convention Hotel and coach Anahi joined hands in 2019 to start the Women Circle but due to COVID -19 restrictions, we could not do much events last year. However, as the as the situation gradually started easing, we got into action and during the month of October, we observed Breast Cancer Awareness month with a variety of events. For us, Anahi is more than a project partner -- her energy & positivity will further help us to make this project successful as we move along in supporting the women forming Qatar’s multi-cultural society.

What are the future avenues that we can look forward to from Sheraton in providing women a poised platform to network and prosper together? While speaking about women support women- something beautiful happened during our launch event. The renowned social media influencer, Fatimah Dhai, who is known as @NewinDoha joined the forces to make this platform successful and strong. Now,

What are some of the challenges that women may face on this journey? and how can they overcome them? I think the biggest challenge could be guilt, which will masquerade itself as lack of time/energy/resources. This is why coaching, and therapy are needed, to support women in challenging that old narrative to create a new one where their Self-Care is a priority not just for themselves but also for their commitment to others.

What should women do to create an equilibrium between their physical, mental and emotional well-being? To be honest, I don’t believe this is a matter of choosing one over the other. We deserve all our needs met holistically. This doesn’t mean doing everything at once, we must choose the area of focus as if we were triaging our lives. This will guide us to an area of focus for a while. Ultimately, the goal is to find joy and contentment within our choices. we are coming together with Anahi & Fatimah for the second event, which will take place on 27th November at Sheraton’s lush gardens. All details will be announced in the LinkedIn group: Women CircleWhere all women come together. We encourage all ladies in town to register and be updated with all the details related to the upcoming event.

What more can be done to empower women?

Women tend to be seen as caregivers, and in many cases, this leads to seldom focusing on their well-being. How can women shift their focus to self-compassion & self-

Despite efforts already underway to empower women in different plces of the word and with more initiatives being launched in the corporate, public and private sectors, I believe we need to look closely at the many ways in which the dynamics in society affect girls and women accomplishments and opportunities.

Ideas and initiatives like Sheraton’s Women’s Circle provide a perfect opportunity where we can start discussions to empower women and also open up about their struggles so that a real change can happen.

care to live joyfully? I believe the key here is on owning the narrative we create about why we indulge in Self-Care. When we decide that we are enough and worthy today, we don’t need to do anything to deserve care and love, Self-Care becomes the fuel that drives us. For many of us, who learned that we needed to care for others, is also about recognising that our love and support to others can’t come at the expense of our Self-Care and Self-Love because that leads to burnout, resentment and regrets. All women need to start living life unapologetically about them and their needs, from that space their commitment to others and their dreams will simply blossom!

Please enlighten us on your collaboration with Sheraton, would you have other collaborations in the near future? My whole focus is on enabling and igniting Women Empowerment in Qatar and the world. This partnership with Sheraton is a long-term commitment where we hope to nourish and grow the community in different ways. I’m currently working on a few other projects around the same ethos, however the work with Sheraton will be a major focus in my work, as well as my private practice as an Empowerment Coach for women. 55

ith its distinctive flair and style, the car is a contemporary

V i t a

Not only is the Ferrari Roma an icon of Italian design, but it representation of the carefree, pleasurable way of life that also represents the pinnacle of characterised Rome in the 1950s and ‘60s. The Ferrari performance in this category, Roma offers discerning clients the finesse and refinement thanks to its turbo-charged V8 from the family of engines that that brings the concept of “la Dolce Vita” right up to date. has won the overall International Engine of the Year award four years running. In this version, the engine reaches 620 cv at 7500 rpm and is coupled with the new 8-speed DCT gearbox that was first introduced on the SF90 Stradale.

63

64

65

The Ferrari Roma’s dynamic development was focused on delivering superior driving pleasure and comfort thanks to the low vehicle weight and to the introduction of the latest evolution of the Side Slip Control. The Ferrari Roma’s chassis benefits from the technology developed by Ferrari for its new generation models; bodyshell and chassis have been redesigned to incorporate the latest weight reduction and advanced production technologies. In fact, 70% of its components are entirely new. The mid-front-engined 2+ Ferrari Roma has the best weight/power ratio in its segment (2.37 kg/cv), which enhances handling dynamics and responsiveness.

To guarantee best-in-class aerodynamic performance whilst still retaining the Ferrari Roma’s stylistic purity, Maranello engineers developed several leading-edge technologies, most notably a mobile rear spoiler integrated into the rear screen designed to retain the car’s formal elegance when retracted and guarantee the downforce essential for the car’s extraordinary performance by automatically deploying at high speeds.

The Ferrari Roma’s design took inspiration from the concept of sporty elegance celebrated in the most legendary grand touring Ferraris of the 1960s, front-engined cars with simple yet elegant forms and a 2+ fastback coupé design. The Ferrari Roma shares many of these characteristics and embodies an extremely modern design language; its pure, refined styling and perfect proportions cleverly conceal the car’s power and sportiness.

66

A new architectural concept for volumes and forms was developed for the Ferrari Roma’s cabin. The idea was to create two separate spaces or cells, one each for driver and passenger, in an evolution of the Dual Cockpit concept introduced on other cars in the range. The strikingly innovative look of this dual cockpit was achieved by extending the philosophy applied to the dash to the entire cabin. A cleverly balanced combination of elegance and sportiness brings a sense of exceptional refinement and unique character to the interior, thanks to a spare, modern design language that underscores the formal purity of both lines and volumes. Thus, the cabin is defined by elements that develop organically and as one around the whole concept of space and its perception.

Ferrari’s unparalleled quality standards and increasing focus on client service underpin the extended seven-year maintenance programme offered with the Ferrari Roma. Available across the entire Ferrari range, the programme covers all regular maintenance for the first seven years of the car’s life. This scheduled maintenance is an exclusive service that allows clients the certainty that their car is being kept at peak performance and safety over the years.

Toyota’s deep-rooted commitment to sustainable mobility was in the spotlight recently as the 2021 Toyota Mirai set a new world record for the longest distance travelled by a hydrogen Fuel Cell Electric Vehicle (FCEV) without refueling. The class-leading vehicle achieved an unprecedented 1,360 km on a single, fiveminute complete fill of hydrogen during a roundtrip tour of Southern California to claim the Guinness World Records title and set a new distance milestone for zero emission vehicles.

T

he official record attempt was closely monitored by Guinness World Records in accordance with its strict rules and documentation procedures. The efficiencyfocused journey took place on August 23 and 24, with the Mirai logging an impressive 64.6 km/L and producing water as its only emission. To ensure total transparency, Guinness World Records adjudicator Michael Empric validated the vehicle’s fuel tank with a seal at both the beginning and end of the journey. “We are delighted to achieve this landmark for sustainable mobility with the Mirai, a pioneering vehicle that heralds a new era of efficient electrified and hydrogen-driven transportation. This comes as part of our continuing drive to develop diversified mobility solutions that offer people more ways to move safely, responsibly, and in harmony with the environment,” said Kei Fujita, Chief Representative, Middle East and Central Asia Representative Office, Toyota Motor Corporation. “With car buyers around the world becoming increasingly eco-conscious, we are confident that the Mirai will set a precedent for future vehicles that will help to create a carbon-neutral society where people can enjoy a happy, healthy, and sustainable life, with greater mobility for all. I would like to thank our customers for their support, which continues to inspire us on our journey to develop ‘everbetter’ cars for a more sustainable tomorrow.”

TOYOTA MIRAI SETS NEW GUINNESS WORLD RECORD WITH 1,360 KM ZERO EMISSION JOURNEY The Mirai was driven by professional hypermiler Wayne Gerdes and co-piloted by Bob Winger. Its two-day trip commenced at the Toyota Technical Center (TTC) in Gardena, California, home of Toyota’s fuel cell development group. The duo traveled south to San Ysidro and then north to Santa Barbara cruising through Santa Monica and Malibu beach along the Pacific Coast Highway. The vehicle returned to TTC that evening having logged 761 km with only two driver swaps. On the second day, the team pushed through 599 more kilometers of morning and afternoon rush hour traffic on the San Diego freeway until the Mirai had no hydrogen left and coasted into TTC with a grand total of 1,360 km driven, as witnessed by Guinness World Records adjudicator Michael Empric. “As a Guinness World Records adjudicator for 10 years, I’ve had the opportunity to witness incredible attempts, including several distance-related feats,” said Empric. “The Toyota Mirai’s journey without the need to refuel showcases the power of fuel cell electric technology. This technology and the design ingenuity by the team at Toyota led to a history-making moment.” By the end of the trip, the Mirai had consumed a total of 5.65kg of hydrogen and passed a total of 12 hydrogen stations along the drive routes without refueling. The Mirai was driven mainly during rush hour traffic in temperatures between 18 to 28 degrees Celsius. It emitted zero pounds of CO2, whereas a standard internal combustion engine vehicle would have emitted about 301 kg of CO2 over the same distance. The 2021 Toyota Mirai is a rear-wheel-drive sports-luxury FCEV that offers a combination of striking design, cutting-edge technology, and premium driving performance. Toyota’s advanced technology enables the vehicle to produce its own electricity using an onboard fuel cell. First developed in 1992, FCEV technology converts hydrogen and oxygen into electricity to power an electric motor, with only water as a by-product. The new-generation Mirai offers a classleading cruising range and can be refueled in just 3 to 5 minutes.
