Pasadena City Hall Pasadena City Hall is one of the finest examples of the California Mediterranean style. It is the dominant building in the Pasadena Civic Center, a complex of government, institutional and cultural buildings that epitomizes the City Beautiful movement. Since its opening on Dec. 27, 1927, 81-year-old Pasadena City Hall has remained one of the most distinctive public buildings in the United States and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. There are over 235 rooms and passageways that cover over 170,000 square feet (16,000 m2). The defining dome, located above the west entrance, is 26 feet (7.9 m) tall and 54 feet (16 m) in diameter. It has long been a favorite filming location for many motion pictures and television programs.
The Rose Bowl The Rose Bowl, opened in October 1922, is recognized as a National Historic Landmark. One of the most famous venues in sporting history, with a modern capacity of an allseated configuration at 92,542, the Rose Bowl is best known as a college football venue, specifically as the host of the annual Rose Bowl Game for which it is named. Since 1982, it has also served as the home stadium of the UCLA Bruins football team. The stadium has also hosted five Super Bowl games, second most of any venue. The Rose Bowl is also a noted soccer venue, having hosted the 1994 FIFA World Cup Final, 1999 FIFA Women’s World Cup Final, and the 1984 Olympic Gold Medal Match, as well as numerous CONCACAF and United States Soccer Federation matches.

Caltech has six academic divisions with strong emphasis on science and engineering, managing $332 million in 2011 in sponsored research. First-year students are required to live on campus and 95% of undergraduates remain in the on-campus House System at Caltech. Caltech manages and operates NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory. As of Oct. 2018, Caltech alumni, faculty and researchers include 73 Nobel Laureates, four Fields Medalists, and six Turing Award winners.
Jet Propulsion Laboratory Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) is a federally-funded research and development center and NASA field center. Founded in the 1930s, the JPL is currently owned by NASA and managed by Caltech for NASA.The laboratory’s primary function is the construction and operation of planetary robotic spacecraft, though it also conducts Earth-orbit and astronomy missions. It is also responsible for operating NASA’s Deep Space Network. Among the laboratory’s major active projects are the Mars Science Laboratory mission (which includes the Curiosity rover), the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter, the Juno spacecraft orbiting Jupiter, the NuSTAR X-ray telescope, the SMAP satellite for earth surface soil moisture monitoring, and the Spitzer Space Telescope. It is also responsible for managing the JPL Small-Body Database, and provides physical data and lists of publications for all known small Solar System bodies. 12
Pasadena Museum of History Headquartered on the grounds of a century-old Pasadena estate, Pasadena Museum of History facilities include: the Pasadena Museum History Center, the Fenyes Estate and gardens, a research library and archives, the Curtin House, and the Finnish Folk Art Museum. With public exhibits, tours, lectures, seminars, and workshops, the Pasadena Museum of History promotes an appreciation of history, culture, arts and sciences relevant to Pasadena and adjoining communities. It is the only institution dedicated to the history, art and culture of historic Pasadena and the west San Gabriel Valley. The Research Library contains well over 1,000,000 historic photos, rare books, manuscripts and maps, architectural records, and more.
Robinson Brothers Bust Though Hall of Fame baseball star Jackie Robinson was born in Cairo, Georgia, he spent his formative years in Pasadena, attending John Muir High School and Pasadena Junior College (now Pasadena City College). While Jackie’s exploits as the man who broke baseball’s color barrier with the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1947 are understandably more well-known, his elder brother Mack also made sports history during the 1936 Olympic Games, taking the Silver Medal in the 200 meter sprint, behind teammate Jesse Owens. This memorial pays tribute to both of the Robinson brothers. Jackie looks towards Brooklyn, NY, to symbolize the destiny waiting for him 2,800 miles to the east. His brother Mack, who returned home to little fanfare and a city job which was later taken from him in retaliation for black residents going to court to force the desegregation of municipal pools, faces towards City Hall, reflecting his complicated relationship with his home town. 13
Occidental College Occidental College, a private liberal arts college in Los Angeles, was founded in 1887, by a group of Presbyterian clergy, missionaries, and laymen and is one of the oldest liberal arts colleges on the West Coast. Architect Myron Hunt created the original campus master plan for Occidental’s Eagle Rock campus in 1911. He structured the campus in a Mediterranean style, with covered walkways and tile roofs. The campus landscape was designed and developed by Beatrix Farrand in the late 1930s. All of the 19 buildings designed by Hunt remain in use today, including Johnson Hall, now the home for the McKinnon Center for Global Affairs. President Barack Obama attended Occidental for two years prior to transferring to Columbia University.
Norton Simon Museum The Norton Simon collections include: European paintings, sculptures, and tapestries; Asian sculptures, paintings, and woodblock prints; and sculpture gardens displaying many sculptors’ work in a landscape setting around a large pond. The Norton Simon Museum, which comprises more than 11,000 objects, contains a significant permanent collection which is highly regarded internationally. No more than 800 or 900 of those pieces are on display at any one time. The museum does not own the works it displays; instead, most of the art is on long-term loan from The Norton Simon Foundation and the Norton Simon Art Foundation, which each own different groups of artworks. As of 2014, their public filings placed the combined fair-market value of the artworks at about $2.5 billion. The museum also mounts temporary exhibitions that focus on a particular artist, an art movement or artistic period, or art that was created in a specific region or country. 14
The Huntington Library, Art Collections and Botanical Gardens The Huntington is a collections-based educational and research institution established by Henry E. Huntington (1850–1927) and located in San Marino. In addition to the library, the institution houses an extensive art collection with a focus on 18th- and 19th-century European art and 17thto mid-20th-century American art. The property also includes approximately 120 acres of specialized botanical landscaped gardens. Use of the collection for research is restricted to qualified scholars, generally requiring a doctoral degree or at least candidacy for the Ph.D., and two letters of recommendation from known scholars. Through a rigorous peer-review program, the institution awards approximately 150 grants to scholars in the fields of history, literature, art, and the history of science.
FAME Pasadena First African Methodist Episcopal Church, the oldest black congregation of denomination in Pasadena, was founded in 1887, in the home of Silas and Cynthia Carnahan. Under the direction of Rev. I. W. H. Nelson, the formal organization was completed in the spring of 1888. The first pastor appointed to serve the church was Rev. J. R. McClain. During the 1960s, the State of California purchased the original church facilities for freeway construction. In 1967, under the administration of Rev. Edward P. Williams, Sr., property was purchased on North Raymond Avenue and Penn Street. In 1969, the present church building was completed and dedicated. In 1976, the Albert L. Carter Building, which includes the Thelma Blake Fellowship Hall, was erected. It was dedicated on April 4, 1976, thereby completing the original plans for the new church building program. 15
Paul R. Williams, FAIA Architect Paul Revere Williams (18941980) designed more than 2,000 private homes, most of which were in the Hollywood Hills and the Mid-Wilshire portion of Los Angeles (including his own home in Lafayette Square, part of historic West Adams in Los Angeles). Williams practiced largely in Southern California and designed the homes of numerous celebrities, including Frank Sinatra, Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz, Lon Chaney, Barbara Stanwyck and Charles Correll. He also designed many public and private buildings. He designed many homes in Pasadena and La Cañada Flintridge. The Linda Vista area of Pasadena has numerous Spanish Colonial and French Country homes of his design. In 1957, he became the first black member to be inducted into the AIA’s College of Fellows.
Gold Line (Los Angeles Metro) The Gold Line is a 31-mile (50 km) light rail line running from Azusa to East Los Angeles via Downtown Los Angeles serving several attractions, including Little Tokyo, Union Station, Chinatown and the shops of Old Pasadena. The line, which is one of six in the Metro Rail system, entered service in 2003 and is operated by the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority (Metro). The Gold Line serves 27 stations (including two subway stations). The Gold Line trains travel at a maximum speed of 55 mph. It takes 73 minutes to travel its 31-mile (50 km) length, at an average speed of 21.9 mph (35 km/h) over its length. The Gold Line is particularly slow through the Highland Park area, where trains reach speeds of only 20 mph (32 km/h) due to several street crossings and through the curves, where trains travel at about 25 mph (40 km/h).

President Dwight D. Eisenhower founded the Sister Cities program in 1956 to achieve international peace through a people-to-people concept of twinning U.S. cities with foreign communities all over the globe. His hope was that through goodwill, understanding, and helping other cultures we would ensure a world of peace. 18
