nationally, with the So Cal Women’s Conference being one of my top three on the West Coast. It will forever be on my list to attend and share. Why? Because of the arousing attention to details regarding the needs of your target audience. Your collaborative relationship with local community leaders and devoted sponsors, not to mention your personal touch on the creative purpose of this conference. The empowerment of your Expo and health experts level of commitment is clearly amazing.

elcome to the 18th Annual So Cal Women’s Conference. As we navigate our journey of life, I live every day with the challenge of nurturing, preserving and promoting my health and it sometimes becomes a challenge. The demands of our lives – family, work, volunteering – can sometimes leave our health a distant afterthought. The conference is to help me as well as you to be reminded how important our health is and to inspire us all to do better. This year, again, you will see “What’s Your 3?” as a guide to incremental, yet substantive ways to be healthier. Be sure to select your sets of three items for improvement as well as your buddy and encouraging partner in health. In preparing for the conference, I am always reading comments from attendees, and I was inspired by a comment from Shyra – and this is what she said: I have attended this conference for the last three years and will certainly not miss it this year. Currently I attend at least 12 to 14 Women’s Conferences

upervisor Kathryn Barger proudly serves the residents of Los Angeles County’s 5th Supervisorial District – the county’s largest – spanning 2800 square miles, which includes 22 cities and 70 unincorporated communities in the San Gabriel, San Fernando, Cresenta, Santa Clarita and Antelope Valleys. Dedicated to providing effective, responsive representation to the residents of Los Angeles County, Kathryn began her career in public service as a college student intern in the office of Supervisor Michael D. Antonovich and rose to become his Chief Deputy Supervisor in 2001, where she served until her election to the Board this past November.

During the course of her County career as chief policy advisor on Health, Mental Health, Social Service and Children’s issues, Kathryn provided leadership to deliver efficient and effective services and programs that have significantly improved the quality of life for foster children, seniors, veterans, the disabled and the mentally ill. Committed to keeping our neighborhoods and communities safe, she has worked with state and federal leaders along with our County District Attorney’s office, Sheriff, and other law enforcement agencies to implement tough laws and vital public safety initiatives. She is an advocate for the environment and efforts to preserve open space, enhance parks, trails, recreational programs and facilities; and strongly supports libraries and after-school programs to serve local communities. With a strong sense of fiscal responsibility and prudence, Kathryn is dedicated to providing vital county services while protecting financial resources as a responsible steward of taxpayer dollars. Kathryn was born and raised in the 5th District and comes from a family with deep roots in public service in Los Angeles County. She is married to a retired Sheriff’s deputy and lives in the San Gabriel Valley.

isa Stevens, a 28-year company veteran, is an executive vice president and holds leadership positions across the country for Wells Fargo. Stevens is president for the Western Region, which includes the states of California, Oregon, Washington, Alaska and 17 states throughout the Midwest and Rocky Mountains. Within the Western Region, Stevens has responsibility for nearly 2,700 branches, 7,150 ATMs and nearly 34,000 team members who serve consumers and small businesses. A California native, Stevens began her career with Wells Fargo in 1989. Prior to assuming her current leadership role, she also headed Small Business Banking for six years, which provides a full range of services to three million business customers with annual revenues up to $5 million. Previously, she was president of California Regional Banking. Long devoted to the communities she serves, Stevens is active in the nonprofit community. She serves on the boards of several nonprofit organizations, including the Executive Committee of the California Business Roundtable, Children’s Hospital Los Angeles, Arizona State University’s Global Institute of Sustainability, Los Angeles Philharmonic Association and the Board of Regents for Santa Clara University. She also served on the Board of the California Chamber of Commerce, San Francisco Opera, National Boys and Girls Club of America, The Center on Philanthropy and Public Policy and the board of The Partnership for Los Angeles Schools, California Business for Education Excellence and the Advisory Committee for The Shriver Report.

Invocation – Morning Session Madelyn D. Manning Co-Pastor, Pasadena Church

adelyn D. Manning serves as the Co-Pastor of Pasadena Church…the church with no limits in Pasadena, California. She is also the founder of Heroes Academy for Girls, a leadership empowerment ministry for teenagers. Pastor Madelyn is becoming known as a woman full of God’s presence, spiritual discernment and grace who is gifted to partner alongside her husband in ministry. Pastor Madelyn’s anointed preaching and worship leading has led her to minister on various platforms, in churches, and international conferences around the globe such as South Africa, Japan, Nicaragua and Cuba. She is a powerful woman of God who continues to impact persons of all ages, backgrounds and cultures. Since April 2001, Pastor Madelyn has led Pasadena Church along with her husband and partner in ministry, Pastor Kerwin L. Manning. They recently celebrated 26 years of marital bliss together and have two beautiful daughters, Madison Manning, and Morgan who recently transitioned to her home in heaven. In honor of Morgan’s life, Pastors Kerwin and Madelyn have started the “A Piece of My Heart” Foundation to help find a cure for a rare heart condition called CPVT or sudden death syndrome, by faith believing there is a greater good coming for the glory of God!

atrice Marshall McKenzie is a skilled professional adept in the Legislative Process, public affairs and media relations. She possesses a well-rounded repertoire of skills and expertise, including policy development, community relations, event management and design, and human resources to name a few. Patrice currently serves at the Deputy Chief of Staff for LAUSD Board Member Dr. George McKenna. Her primary responsibilities include the development and implementation of policy priorities, intergovernmental relations, community outreach, and supervising staff. Patrice’s professional career is augmented by an equal portfolio of community service. She currently serves as President of the Pasadena chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. and sits on several boards including the Los Angeles African American Women’s Public Policy Institute (LAAAWPPI), Pasadena/Altadena Ivy Foundation and the LA Trust for Children’s Health. Ms. McKenzie is a graduate of UC Berkeley with a degree in African American Studies and holds an MPA degree from Bernard M. Baruch School of Public Affairs at the City University of New York.

Invocation – Afternoon Session Melinda Campbell First African Methodist Episcopal Church, Pasadena

asadena resident Melinda Woods-Campbell is an active community leader and was recognized by the Pasadena Journal in 2016 as a Woman of Distinction. For First African American Episcopal Church –Pasadena (F.A.M.E.), Melinda is the First Lady, serves on the Senior Usher Board, teaches Teen Sunday School, acts as Recording Secretary for the Olivia Wilson Women’s Missionary Society, serves as Unit Chairperson for the Ella Harris Greene Unit of the Women’s Missionary Society, attends the 5:30 a.m. weekly prayer meeting and volunteers at the church’s food pantry. A prodigious fundraiser, Melinda recently led the 2nd Annual Scholarship tea for the students at First A.M.E. ChurchPasadena raising over $7,000 for scholarships. Additionally, Melinda has been deeply involved with the African Methodist Episcopal church Southern California Conference of the Women’s Missionary Society where she has served in several leadership roles including chair of the conference; and, where she currently serves as Treasurer. Melinda is a member of the Pasadena Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority and currently serves as Director and Treasurer of the Pasadena Delta Foundation. Melinda is married to Reverend Dr. Larry E. Campbell and has one son, Terrence. In her spare time, Melinda enjoys reading African American Christian Fiction books.

amsey Jay, Jr. (ramseyjayjr.com) is an investment management executive. Ramsey is also a recognized expert on leadership development, communication consultant, and international motivational speaker. His personal mission is “Empowering Dreamers to Become Achievers”, the title of his recently released book detailing his 3P’s empowerment methodology, (Possible, Probable, Predictable). There are a myriad of societal inequities influencing the equitable upward mobility of women. Dynamic empowerment strategies are a constructive panacea, which can help mitigate these inequities. The 3P Principles “Possible-Probable-Predictable” will be introduced as a practical template to empower every woman to ascend to their next level of excellence.

s a saxophonist, flautist, and vocalist – the performing arts have always been an important part of Varetta’s life.

From the platform of concert halls, to the sanctuary of a church, or the center field of a prison yard – her purpose as an artist is to portray music that encourages the hearts of the listeners and soothes the soul. She also serves as the director for Instruments of Praise, Inc. a non-profit organization that provides foundational training and skill development for young artists.

lizabeth’s passion is dancing. She has been dancing on and off since the age of seven. She won numerous awards in high school and she continued her schooling at Pasadena City College. She went on to choreograph for church ministries and presently teaches dance and stretch exercise classes; she says the bible teaches us to be well balanced (mind, body, soul and spirit). Elizabeth’s greatest gift in life is the gift of two beautiful children, Jairus and Jahmal. She is a doting wife of 39 years to the man she calls her loving husband, Redell Ellis.

Luncheon Speakers KEYNOTE SPEAKER Congresswoman Judy Chu

udy Chu was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in July 2009. She represents the 27th Congressional District, which includes Pasadena and the west San Gabriel Valley of southern California.

Rep. Chu currently serves on the powerful House Ways and Means Committee, which has jurisdiction over legislation pertaining to taxes, revenues, Social Security, and Medicare. In that Committee, Rep. Chu is a member of the Subcommitees on Health and Human Resources, giving her oversight over healthcare reform and crucial safety net programs. She also serves on the House Small Business Committee, which has oversight of the Small Business Administration, and is a member of the Subcommittee on Economic Growth, Tax and Capital Access. In 2011, Chu was elected Chair of the Congressional Asian Pacific American Caucus (CAPAC), which advocates for the needs and concerns of the Asian American and Pacific Islander community across the nation. She helps lead the Tri-Caucus, a joint effort with the Congressional Black Caucus and the Congressional Hispanic Caucus. Chu founded and co-chairs the Congressional Creative Rights Caucus, which advocates for the copyright protections of those in the creative industries, such as music, film and visual arts. She also serves in leadership of the House Democratic Caucus as a Member of the Steering and Policy Committee. Chu lives with her husband, Michael Eng, in the city of Monterey Park, where they have been residents for over 30 years.

Sheila Grether-Marion TOPIC: How your attitude can make a miracle The importance of doing the hard work to rehabilitate and the importance of attitude and the support of family and friends to recovery...

heila Grether-Marion has worked in several fields during her decades-long career. She majored in theatre at Occidental College and attended Blair High School. Her first career was as a professional fund raiser for Lincoln Center and the Brooklyn Academy of Music in New York City. That was followed by her tenure at the National Repertory Theatre and California State University, Los Angeles. She also raised funds for medical research, documentaries (including Sundance award winner, “Amanda”) and several theatre companies including the Furious Theatre Company (Board Treasurer), the Stella Adler School, McCadden Theatre Company (Board member) and the Bilingual Foundation for the Arts. In 1982 she was selected as Executive Director for the Los Angeles Library system, where she mounted a successful campaign to rebuild the Hollywood Library which had been destroyed by arsonists. Sheila has received many awards for her philanthropic work including the Presidential Award for Public Sector Initiatives in 1982, citations from Mayor Tom Bradley, the Board of Library Commissioners and the County Board of Supervisors for her work raising funds to combat adult illiteracy. She began her second career in 1987 as a financial Advisor at UBS and in 2002 joined Merrill Lynch as Senior Vice President and Portfolio Manager until her accident in Africa in 2013. Sheila has served on the Board of the Pasadena Playhouse since 1999 and is currently Vice Chairman of the Board (she served as Chairman of the Board 2012-2013). Sheila resides in Sierra Madre with her husband, Mark. Her daughter, Marissa C. Fox, is a lawyer who is Policy Director for Keep Tahoe Blue and her son, Orion Marker Marion, is a boat builder, ship captain, artist and musician in Seattle, Washington. Beauty What Causes Breast Cancer (and what you can do about it) Presenter: Veronica C. Jones, M.D. City of Hope Bio: Dr. Veronica Jones is an Assistant Clinical Professor of Breast Surgery at City of Hope in Duarte, CA. She is a Los Angeles native and earned her undergraduate degree with honors from Stanford University before completing her medical degree at Meharry Medical College in Nashville, TN. She practiced at Emory University in Atlanta GA as part of the faculty before moving back home with her family to join City of Hope. In addition to seeing patients in the clinic and operating, she conducts research on aggressive breast cancers in primarily minority populations. Topic: This will be an interactive discussion on what increases your risk for breast cancer (and how to decrease that risk). We will also discuss how to identify whether you have a genetic predisposition for cancer and what the implications are for you and your family. Moderator: Jeri Mack Room: Monterey Capacity: 50

Throughout my life I have embraced adventure. I’ve enjoyed white water rafting, kayaking, downhill skiing, Lparasailing, snow boarding, rock un g climbing, horseback riding and body building. I’ve also had my share of close we calls. My husband and I endured bwater a force 5 hurricane in Antartica; I went over a waterfall after falling off a white un raft in Sacramento; and I gu with my neck. survived a major car crash that gave me amnesia in 1979 and led to chronic problems

The Zambezi river is full of apex predators; crocodiles, elephants, hippos, and tiger fish, which are essentially large piranha fish with razor-sharp teeth. Against the good advice of my husband, who took the land route, I embarked on a fateful journey during which my canoe was mock-charged by two bull elephants. Two hours in, as the approaching twilight signaled the end of our canoe ride, an enormous crocodile slithered into the river, quickly approaching my canoe. My rear end had fallen asleep, as I was not used to canoe rides, and I struggled to get out of the unstable canoe and onto the shore. My guide, a large, strong Australian, panicked, and full of adrenaline, he yanked me out of the canoe by my right hand with such force that he broke my neck! I did not immediately realize the severity of my injury, Cu and continued on with the safari — landing in small planes on beaches,Lclimbing in caves, riding down uian Zamsand ito a bezand dunes in Namibia - until the pain became intolerable, i an MRI revealed a break at the base of my neck.

After my surgery, I made a conscious decision to be an inspiration to others facing similar challenges. Complaining never results in anything positive. We all live on the cusp of death; we are all inter-connected. Our deeds – good or bad – ripple outward. Welcome to the 2018 Man Cave

n behalf of Gamma Zeta Boulé of Sigma Pi Phi Fraternity, we want to welcome you to the “2018 Man Cave.” It is a pleasure to join in partnership again with the So Cal Women’s Conference to provide an experience that will enhance the knowledge and the importance of health awareness and disease prevention. Recognizing and preventing health problems is crucial, especially for men who tend to shy aware from health-related issues. This is the fourth year for the Man Cave – and it keeps getting better each year!

We have added a panel discussion on the topic of Sexual Harassment, a discussion on Naturalistic Alternatives, and a feature film entitled “The Silent Killer”. The Man Cave will also feature a collaborative group of physicians and experts spanning across a wide range of medical specialties and life style health disciplines. All participants are invited to take the time; to relax, view the exhibits, enjoy the auxiliary activities, Bid Whist and dominoes games and haircuts from our volunteer barber.

As a reminder, the goal of the Man Cave is to give everyone attending the opportunity to take some time out of their busy schedule to relax and embark on the path to better health. Attendees will have a chance to interact with outstanding and dynamic speakers who are both engaging and resourceful. This year, we have flipped the script by adding topics that are sensitive topics in today’s environment.

Kennedy Vice Mayor, City of Pasadena Dear Friends, As Vice Mayor of the City of Pasadena, and Honorary Chair for the So Cal Women’s Conference Man Cave, it is my pleasure and honor to welcome you to this distinct educational, and potentially life-changing, opportunity. T he conference brings together women, men, community-based health organizations, medical professionals, and beauty experts from across the country to discuss and exchange vital health-related information. Furthermore, this full-day event aims to empower participants to make better decisions about their health, wellness, and lifestyle by sharing information on health matters, available services, resources and ways to influence health policy. This year’s conference proudly boasts 80 vendors, boutique shopping, free health screenings, dynamic workshops and charismatic speakers. The City of Pasadena is fortunate that the So Cal Women’s Conference is now part of the fabric of our wonderful community. Man Cave Invocation Pastor Kerwin Manning Pasadena Church

erwin L. Manning serves as the “Head Coach”/Senior Pastor at Pasadena Church…the church with no limits! This vibrant multi-racial, multi-ethnic church is actively pursuing the purposes of God as they shepherd their community and serve the nations. Kerwin’s energetic worship leading and dynamic speaking has allowed him to minister in an array of settings around the globe. From college campuses to international conventions, he has a god-given gift of ushering people into the presence of God.

Born and raised in Toledo, Ohio, Kerwin completed his undergraduate work at Anderson University, Anderson, Indiana with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Religion. He is a former President of the National Inspirational Youth Convention (“NIYC”) of the Church of God. NIYC is one of the largest youth conventions in the United States that ministers to approximately 6,000 delegates annually. He has also served the local and national church in several other capacities. He currently serves as President of the Clergy Community Coalition of Greater Pasadena. He is involved in several other initiatives that promote a stronger community. Since Easter 2001 Kerwin has led Pasadena Church along with his wife and partner in ministry, Madelyn, who is also a very gifted communicator and anointed psalmist. They recently celebrated twenty-six years of marital bliss together and have two beautiful teenage daughters, Madison Denise is a Senior in high school and Morgan Danielle is waiting for them in Heaven.

Keynote Speaker Kyler Franklin Youth Pastor

yler Franklin is a native of Los Angeles California and a graduate of Fisk University, where he obtained a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration. With a background in financial services, Kyler has worked at various investment banks, serving in multiple capacities from business development, to risk management, and in operations. He is currently a financial advisor at Merrill Lynch, where he helps steer families, businesses, and organizations through their individual financial roadmap. Kyler is also an empowerment speaker & the founder of The Pop-Up Church, which is a millennial aged focused evangelism ministry. In his free time, Kyler enjoys giving back to his community, spending time with his fraternity; Kappa Alpha Psi, and watching his favorite sports teams play. Above all else Kyler directs his professional life, his ministry and his work in the community by this quote, “Success is not defined by how successful you are, but how successful you make the people around you.”

Bio: Rory Douglas is a Financial Educator with World System Builders (WSB). He is also an author and Leadership & Life Coach. He is on a National Campaign to spread Financial Literacy and Artificial Intelligence with a mission of 1 Million Educated Families by the year 2020. He travels all around the world speaking with youth and organizations, colleges and universities as well as ministries and nonProfits to empower them to pursue their purpose in the areas of Financial Literacy and Mental Health.

Bio: Stephan “Steph” Taylor is on a mission to impact the communities he lives and works in with financial literacy education. Whatever your profession, Steph is committed to educating about retirement, insurance, and other savings and investment tools. Topic: Learn ways to talk with your children about the importance of money management and teach them smart financial habits.

Innovations in Medical Care at City of Hope Presenter: Steven T. Rosen, MD, FACP, FASCO, City of Hope Bio: Steven T. Rosen, MD is the provost, chief scientific officer, and director of the Comprehensive Cancer Center and the Beckman Research Institute, Irell & Manella Cancer Center Director’s Distinguished Chair for the City of Hope. Following his graduation with distinction from Northwestern University Medical School’s Six-Year Honors Program in Chicago, Dr Rosen completed his residency in internal medicine at Northwestern and a fellowship in medical oncology at the National Cancer Institute in Maryland. Topic: Innovations in medical care at City of Hope: Robotic surgery, diabetes and metabolism breakthroughs, stem cell biology and more!

The Silent Killer: Prostate Cancer in the African American Community Writer Landi Maduro’s filmmaking partner, E. Chris Edwards, came to her with an idea for a new film: his father and brother were prostate cancer survivors and he’d realized that many men in his community never talked about the disease, let alone get screened for it. He wanted to ensure that men were aware of their risk, and so “The Silent Killer: Prostate Cancer in the African American Community” was born. In order to make this authentic, relatable documentary film, Landi visited sporting events, local communities, churches, and other community gathering places to interview men and see what they knew about prostate cancer. After speaking to dozens of men, Landi decided to follow several men who were all battling different stages of the disease: she focused on how they were dealing with their diagnoses, what treatment they decided to pursue, and how prostate cancer has affected their lives. She also interviewed medical and health professionals to provide viewers different angles of the disease.

An Entrepreneur’s Journey to Innovative Non-Profit Success Presenter: Darick J. Simpson Long Beach Community Action Partnership Bio: Darick J. Simpson is a non-profit executive director, author, lyricist and community leader. Recognitions include: 2012 Ten Most Powerful People in Long Beach; 2015 PBS SoCal American Graduate Champion; and 2016 CCEJ Humanitarian Award. He has three published books and is a former voting member of the Recording Academy. Topic: A non-profit executive director shares his journey to transform a struggling non-profit helping low income families grow from a $1.3 million to $10 million budget, applying entrepreneurial strategies, innovative programs and leveraging community support while gaining national recognition for teen programs and creating PADNET.TV.

Bio: As a Firefighter and Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) for over 32 years, Dr. Romeo Brooks has seen an overwhelming amount of unnecessary pain and suffering. His quest for knowledge in the field of health was initiated after his father passed from emphysema and his mother from a blocked intestine and kidney failure. As a result, Dr. Brooks studied to become an Iridologist, Natural Hygienist and Herbalist, and earned a Ph.D. in Naturopathic Medicine. To further his quest to bring health and wholeness to the public, he created a line of extraordinary natural wellness products available through Roots Nutrition & Fitness, in-store in Inglewood, CA and online to the world. A native of Los Angeles, Dr. Brooks studied at the Herbal Healing Academy in Mountain View, Arkansas and California State University, Los Angeles as well as Southern California College in Costa Mesa. He has also studied with many of the top names in Holistic Healing. Dynamic and filled with passion to share with his revolutionary concepts on health and well being, Dr. Brooks is a successful and in-demand speaker.

Sexual Harassment Panel Discussion Panelist: Joe C. Hopkins Law Offices of Joe C. Hopkins Bio: Joe C. Hopkins is a businessman, attorney, newspaper publisher and author. He graduated Pepperdine University and Glendale University College of Law. His cases involve Employment Discrimination, Civil Rights, Personal Injury, Criminal Defense and Sexual Harassment. He has published seven books on legal and personal matters. Joe is married to Ruthie since 1962. They have three grown sons, seven grandchildren and one greatgrandchild. Panelist: Dana Haynes Brown City of Los Angeles Employee Relations Division Bio: Ms. Brown is the Chief Employee Relations Officer for the City of L.A. As such, she represents the Mayor and City Council at the bargaining table negotiating wages, benefits, hours and working conditions for City workers. A 31-year veteran employee of the City of Los Angeles, she manages a staff of eight labor relation specialists responsible for the negotiation, development, interpretation and enforcement of all sworn and civilian contracts for the City’s workforce. Topic: An interactive panel discussion on various types of sexual harassment and remedies.
