Welcome!

urturing, preserving and promoting our health challenges us all on a daily basis. The demands of our lives – family, work, volunteering – can sometimes leave our health a distant afterthought. The challenges of prioritizing our health inspired me 19 years ago to found the So Cal Women’s Health/Beauty and Empowerment Conference & Expo now called the SoCal Women’s Conference. Since that beginning, the goal of this conference has remained unchanged – to promote the health of individuals and our community through information, innovation and inspiration. This year, we are focusing on Empowerment and the Power of Females. We provide our attendees with a guide to incremental, yet substantive ways to be healthier. The workshops you attend will help you improve your life and enhance the good things you are doing. We seek to encourage women to secure their own oxygen masks in the form of taking care of their own health first. With that in mind, this year we continue our emphasis on nurturing and nourishing the entire woman in all measures of health and wellness – physical, mental, financial, spiritual and Fun. While maintaining our emphasis on women, years ago we added the Man Cave to provide a safe, peer

forum to address men’s health issues. We realized that men too have an interest in know more about tools to help keep knowledgable on health and preventative care. Knowingly and lovingly inspired, we created the Man Cave to provide a fun, relaxed environment for men to discuss and learn about men’s health issues.

or 19 years the So Cal Women’s Conference and Expo has served over 29,000 women. As always it has been a labor of love. The mission of Community Women Vital Voices is to empower women and girls through educational programs, public services, public policy and charitable services. Each year we host our Health, Beauty and Empowerment Expo we endeavor bring something new. A number years ago we introduced the Man Cave where men gather and freely discuss issues unique to them. Our Man Cave has been a huge success. We are proud of the variety of workshops, speakers and vendors that volunteer their time and resources to focus on women’s health and the health of their families. One focus this year is on our 20- to 45-year-olds and their needs. Sometimes they get so busy taking care of others they neglect themselves. Health and Beauty go together. When we feel good we look good and when we look good we feel good. We end the conference on a fun note with our signature Fashion Show. upervisor Kathryn Barger proudly serves the residents of Los Angeles County’s 5th Supervisorial District – the county’s largest – spanning 2800 square miles, which includes 22 cities and 70 unincorporated communities in the San Gabriel, San Fernando, Cresenta, Santa Clarita and Antelope Valleys. Dedicated to providing effective, responsive representation to the residents of Los Angeles County, Kathryn began her career in public service as a college student intern in the office of Supervisor Michael D. Antonovich and rose to become his Chief Deputy Supervisor in 2001, where she served until her election to the Board in 2016.

During the course of her County career as chief policy advisor on Health, Mental Health, Social Service and Children’s issues, Kathryn provided leadership to deliver efficient and effective services and programs that have significantly improved the quality of life for foster children, seniors, veterans, the disabled and the mentally ill. Committed to keeping our neighborhoods and communities safe, she has worked with state and federal leaders along with our County District Attorney’s office, Sheriff, and other law enforcement agencies to implement tough laws and vital public safety initiatives. She is an advocate for the environment and efforts to preserve open space, enhance parks, trails, recreational programs and facilities; and strongly supports libraries and after-school programs to serve local communities. With a strong sense of fiscal responsibility and prudence, Kathryn is dedicated to providing vital county services while protecting financial resources as a responsible steward of taxpayer dollars. Kathryn was born and raised in the 5th District and comes from a family with deep roots in public service in Los Angeles County. She is married to a retired Sheriff’s deputy and lives in the San Gabriel Valley.

Global Executive Vice President, Aon

isa Stevens is Global Executive Vice President of Aon. In this role, she is co-leading Delivering Aon United and globalizing the firm’s risk consulting capabilities. She is responsible for managing financial services relationships, driving innovation and delivering client outcomes. Prior to her current role, Stevens served as Head of Western United States for Wells Fargo. She was responsible for 34,000 employees and 2700 Branches. Stevens has an extensive background in managing operating, market, reputation and credit risk. She also managed a multi-billion-dollar Profit and Loss Statement. Stevens led the banking industry segment in small business lending during her tenor. She also built strategy and launched FastFlex, the first product in traditional financial services that disrupted the fintech industry. She has a long track record of building and launching solutions in the financial services segment. Stevens is widely recognized for her integrity and leadership. Stevens earned a Bachelor of Science degree from Santa Clara University. She is on several boards including Children’s Hospital of LA, ASU School Sustainability, Santa Clara University Board of Regents and serves as a commissioner for the Rose Bowl Operating Committee.

First African Methodist Episcopal Church, Pasadena asadena resident Melinda WoodsCampbell is an active community leader and was recognized by the Pasadena Journal in 2016 as a Woman of Distinction. For First African American Episcopal Church –Pasadena (F.A.M.E.), Melinda is the First Lady, serves on the Senior Usher Board, teaches Teen Sunday School, acts as Recording Secretary for the Olivia Wilson Women’s Missionary Society, serves as Unit Chairperson for the Ella Harris Greene Unit of the Women’s Missionary Society, attends the 5:30 a.m. weekly prayer meeting and volunteers at the church’s food pantry. A prodigious fundraiser, Melinda recently led the 2nd Annual Scholarship tea for the students at First A.M.E. ChurchPasadena raising over $7,000 for scholarships. Melinda is married to Reverend Dr. Larry E. Campbell and has one son, Terrence. In her spare time, Melinda enjoys reading African American Christian Fiction books.

atrice Marshall McKenzie is a skilled professional adept in the Legislative Process, public affairs and media relations. She possesses a well-rounded repertoire of skills and expertise, including policy development, community relations, event management and design, and human resources to name a few. Patrice currently serves at the Deputy Chief of Staff for LAUSD Board Member Dr. George McKenna. Her primary responsibilities include the development and implementation of policy priorities, intergovernmental relations, community outreach, and supervising staff. Ms. McKenzie is a graduate of UC Berkeley with a degree in African American Studies and holds an MPA degree from Bernard M. Baruch School of Public Affairs at the City University of New York.

astor Jean Burch is the senior pastor of Community Bible Church of Greater Pasadena. Prior to her appointment as senior pastor in April 2000 she served the church as assistant pastor under her father, Pastor Emeritus John W. Burch. In March of 2000 Pastor Jean ended a 20-year career in the legal profession to become a full time pastor. She is simply and affectionately known as “Pastor Jean.” Pastor Jean served as an instructor at the Southern California School of Ministry, teaching a class entitled, “Women in Ministry.” She is an occasional guest lecturer for courses at Fuller Theological Seminary and previously served three years on the faculty of the Lloyd Ogilive, “Preaching with Passion Conferences.” Recently she traveled to South Africa with Bishop Joseph Garlington and the Reconciliation! Ministries team, teaching a class on “Women in Ministry.”

anice Lum is the South/West Region Business Operations Leader and Chief Operating Officer for Aon’s Southern California offices and West Construction Group, leading strategic operational initiatives, emphasizing exemplary client services, E&O mitigation, operational efficiencies, financial results and colleague engagement. Primary focus is in region and office execution, but also leads efforts to create a collaborative work environment, offering professional development, networking opportunities, and community outreach for our colleagues. She is also Aon’s National Diversity & Inclusion project manager and Budget & Operations co-leader for the National Business Women International Network. Janice holds a degree in Business Administration with an emphasis in Finance from the University of Southern California and an MBA from Pepperdine University.

The year 2019 also marks the 100th anniversary of the passing of the 19th Amendment, which was ratiﬁed in 1920 guaranteeing and protecting women's constitutional right to vote. Power Breakfast Speakers Laura V. Farber President, 2020 Tournament of Roses®

ournament of Roses® President Laura V. Farber provides leadership for the 131st Rose Parade® and the 106th Rose Bowl Game® on January 1, 2020.

Farber has been a volunteer member of the Tournament of Roses Association since 1993. She was appointed a Tournament Chairperson in 2004 and a Tournament Director in 2010. Throughout her extensive Tournament career, Farber has served on and chaired various committees including Decorating Places, Formation Area, Judging and Membership Development. She was elected to the Executive Committee in 2012. Professionally, Farber is a partner in the Pasadena law firm of Hahn & Hahn, where she practices civil litigation with an emphasis in employment disputes. Additionally, Farber is a member of the American Bar Association, where she serves as the State Delegate for California in the House of Delegates, Chair of the Latin America and Caribbean Initiative Council, a member of the Rule of Law Initiative Board, a member of the Steering Committee of the Nominating Committee, a former member of the Board of Governors representing the State of California, past chair of the Commission on Youth At Risk, past chair of the Solo Small Firm and General Practice Division, past chair of the Young Lawyers Division and past member of the ABA Journal Editorial Board. She has also served as member of the Board of Trustees of the Los Angeles County Bar Association, and as a member of the Minorities in the Legal Profession Committee, and she served as President of the Barristers, the LACBA’s young lawyers division. She is also a member of the State Bar of California, California Women Lawyers, Women Lawyers Association of Los Angeles, National Association of Women Lawyers, Mexican-American Bar Association, Latina Lawyers Bar Association and the Hispanic National Bar Association.

Holly Robinson Peete Actress, author, talk show host, activist, philanthropist

olly Robinson Peete has been touched by the entertainment industry almost all of her life. Her career as an actress dates back more than three decades and has led her to becoming a voice for her father, her son and her community. She can currently be seen at the center of Hallmark Channel’s new and very first primetime family docu-series, “Meet the Peetes.” Robinson Peete had her first experience in front of the camera at the age of four when she appeared on television opposite her father, Matthew Robinson, who served as a producer and portrayed the original beloved character of Gordon on the iconic children’s program “Sesame Street.” While she knew even at that young age her calling was to be an actress, Robinson Peete opted to lead a typical childhood rather than searching to be the next child star.

However, upon finishing her college education, Robinson Peete’s heart led her back to entertainment. In 1986, she landed a starring role on the FOX television drama “21 Jump Street” opposite unknown cast members including Johnny Depp. She went on to star in many other successful television series including “Hangin’ With Mr. Cooper,” “For Your Love” and “One on One.” Robinson Peete’s successful television career places her as one of only a handful of actresses to star in four shows in syndication. In addition, she had a recurring role on hit comedy series “Mike & Molly” as well as NBC’s hit drama series “Chicago Fire”. In 1997, Robinson Peete and her husband, former NFL quarterback Rodney Peete, formed the HollyRod Foundation, inspired by her father’s courageous battle with Parkinson’s disease, with the mission to help improve the quality of life of people with Parkinson’s. Then in 2005, inspired by their eldest son’s autism diagnosis, HollyRod Foundation’s mission expanded to provide support and resources to those affected by an autism diagnosis. Through the HollyRod Foundation and her family’s personal experiences, Robinson Peete has become one of the most trusted advocates for consistent and reliable education, outreach and support for both Parkinson’s and autism. Her autism advocacy also extends to her book co-written with daughter, Ryan Elizabeth Peete, entitled My Brother Charlie, a bestselling, NAACP Image Award-winning children’s book about autism from the sibling’s perspective. With her first book, Get Your Own Damn Beer, I’m Watching the Game: A Women’s Guide to Loving Pro Football, Robinson Peete won the 2006 Quill Literacy Award. The follow-up to the children’s book, entitled Same But Different – Teen Life On The Autism Express which was co authored by her twins Ryan Elizabeth & RJ, was released in spring 2016.

Danielle W. Carter (Dani W)

anielle W. Carter (Dani W) is an award-winning sultry powerhouse singer-songwriter and speaker from Los Angeles. Dani W is known for her silky tone and lyrical word play championing Love, Family and Freedom. Being of mixed heritage, her mission is to build multi-cultural communities through her voice and messaging. Dani is the honored first-place winner of the International Songwriters Song Day contest for writing inspirational song “Living Legacy.” The award celebrates the first day that the human voice was recorded, championing the global community of songwriters. The anthem “Legacy” has since been aligned to power the mission of Junior League of Pasadena’s five-year mission to advance careers for women and entrepreneurs. Dani has performed alongside Wayne Brady, Judith Hill from Michael Jackson’s This Is It and The Voice finalist, Nashville’s hit songwriter Jim McCormick and recording artist Greta Gaines. Dani also sings with her father in a 70s funk band in local venues such as The Hanger (Orange County Fair), The Mint, Santa Monica Pier and Molly Malone’s, as well as for many charity events held for UCLA and USC. Dani is currently touring as a duo act, Dani W + Drew, to share their Safe2Land EP which gained some recognition by SOUL TRACKS music blog while on their west coast tour from California to Canada and ABC-TV network as part of SpringBoard Festival. They also perform locally with a full band. When not on stage, Dani works on new collections for her jewelry line ONYX xoxo empowering women to express their unique style and to own their voice. Passionate about initiating partners between artists and small businesses, she drives sponsorships as Director of Artist Relations & Strategic Partnerships at Indie Jams LA, which was awarded “Best of Coachella.”

Karen A. Clark

aren A. Clark, Multicultural Strategies Manager at City National Bank, creates marketing and advertising strategies to win diverse clients; and internally, she manages diversity and inclusion. Preceding City National, she spent three years building U.S. Bank’s multicultural marketing department, after managing their CRA for Southern California. She is an actor, singer, songwriter, and producer. Her sophomore album, the Karen A. Clark Project, is available on iTunes and all digital outlets. The 3rd album and book are due early 2020. Her musical revue, “Love Stories,” which features music from the 2nd and upcoming CDs, utilizes a storytelling backdrop and relatable themes to engage the audience. She has been touring locally throughout 2019; and will hit the 2020 jazz stages in various markets. Her one-woman theatrical show “The Women” has been produced numerous times locally and out of state. She served as development director for non-profit Operation HOPE five years, raising $4-6 million a year, on a combined restricted unrestricted basis. She helped to fund and open 11 offices nationally. Karen’s Board passions: Educating Young Minds; Duke Media (financial ed. Director); PCR sbdc; Streetlights; LA Women’s Theatre Fest. She speaks frequently and coaches on personal branding, inclusive leadership, and multicultural marketing. She studied digital analytics (Columbia Business School ’19); strategic marketing management (Harvard Business School ‘16); BA in economics (CSUS). Throughout her extensive Tournament career, Farber has served on and chaired various committees including Decorating Places, Formation Area, Judging and Membership Development. aidee Lagunday is a registered nurse with 24 years of experience mostly in the transportation industry. She joined UPS in 2003 as the Occupational Health Supervisor in the West Los Angeles District. In her current role, West Zone Occupational Health Manager, she has responsibilities for 11 occupational health nurse supervisors from 4 districts encompassing 13 western states that supports nearly 80,000 UPSers.

Haidee earned her Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree in 1996 from Mount Saint Mary’s University Los Angeles, CA. She started her nursing career at Daniel Freeman Memorial, then became the Occupational Health Nurse for Union Pacific Railroad. To continue with her volunteerism she has been the Director of Training for the SoCal Women’s Conference for the past 7 years.

a Shawn Stanford is the Community Affairs Manager for UPS’s West Region, which employs nearly 150,000 employees across the 25 U.S. western states. She manages an annual budget of nearly $3 million and is responsible for supporting the company’s community affairs and philanthropic strategy. Her primary focus areas are building stronger, safer, and more resilient communities, while enhancing UPS’s reputation as an employer of choice.

HMRI is a nonprofit, independent biomedical research organization dedicated to finding diagnostic tools and treatments for serious diseases that affect millions of people each year. Our internationally recognized scientists and physicians are at the forefront of cutting-edge medical research to understand the root causes of common illnesses that affect untold numbers of families, ranging from Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias to migraine, heart disease, and other serious illnesses.

health and wellbeing looks different than it did decades ago. With countless demands on our time and bodies, we now know that our wellbeing goes much deeper than our physical appearance. And to be at our best for ourselves and our family, we need to care for every dimension of our wellbeing. Your Wellbeing – the Whole Picture Wellbeing is a state of balance among four areas that make up our lives. EMOTIONAL WELLBEING is your ability to cope with normal stresses, handle life’s up and downs, and realize your potential. If this area is out of balance, take time for yourself and don’t be afraid to ask for help when you need it. Even taking five minutes a day to write about your feelings or meditate can help you recenter yourself and take on life’s challenges. Take Action: Each morning or evening, take a few minutes to write in a journal. After two weeks, see if it’s a habit that has been improving your emotional wellbeing.

e want to welcome you to the “Man Cave.” It is a pleasure to join in partnership again with the So California Women’s Health Conference to provide an experience that will enhance the consciousness and the importance of health awareness and disease prevention. Recognizing and preventing health problems is crucial, especially for men who tend to shy aware from health related issues.

The goal of the Man Cave is to give those attending an opportunity to take some time out of their busy schedule to relax and embark on the path to better health. Attendees will have a chance to interact with outstanding and dynamic speakers who are both engaging and resourceful. They will learn that many men related illnesses and diseases that will be discussed by our speakers are preventable and can be lessened by early detection.

We cannot believe that this is the 6th year of having a Man Cave at the conference. The first Man Cave was a unique first-of-its-kind of event that became extremely popular each successive year. Participants in that first Man Cave recognized that this was an excellent opportunity for men to get together and talk about men’s health issues in a comfortable and relaxed environment. Consequently, the word spread throughout the community and the Man Cave has become a “packed house” each year.

You will notice that this year’s Man Cave is in an abbreviated format. That is because we are actively gearing up to support the 20 year anniversary of the So Cal Women’s Health Conference in 2020. We have several new and innovative activities planned for next year. However, please enjoy this year’s Man Cave and have a great time. Relax, enjoy the food, enjoy the games and enjoy the camaraderie with the other men. native of Dayton, Ohio, Bishop Charles Wesley Jordan began his professional ministry in Northern Illinois and from 1958-1992, served as a pastor of local congregations, a district superintendent, a conference program staff person, and a district executive of urban ministries. In his last appointment before being elected a bishop, he was the senior pastor of the historic St. Mark United Methodist Church in the city of Chicago. In 1992 he was elected and consecrated as a United Methodist Bishop. He retired from active episcopal assignment as the Bishop of the Iowa Area, September 1, 2000.

Fashion Show 2019

Greetings! We applaud you for taking time out of your busy life to take a moment to breathe, spend time with your friends and focus on you, your health and gaining knowledge which will empower you.

Our Fashion Show Theme for this year’s show is “The Motown Era.” We Fashion Show will take you back to the time where Executive we expressed ourselves through Director songs that had deep meanings and Elizabeth Ellis dances named “Funky Chicken” and “Four Corners.” Clothes that were put together with style, fashion and class that stood the test of time. It was when people stood up for their rights and Marvin Gaye quoted: “War is not the answer, for only love can conquer hate.” It was a time that artists like Marvin Gaye, The Supremes. Stevie Wonder, The Four Tops, James Brown, Diana Ross, The Jackson 5, The Temptations, and many more sang beautiful melodies with profound meanings which are relevant today. I encourage you to use your influence in a positive way and share the information from today’s conference with your family, friends, co-workers and community. Let us lead by example and manage life well so we may enjoy it well.

Today we close out this conference with women and men who know their source, their power, and their strength, and are compelled to say “It’s My Time, Watch Me, I Got It.” We want you to sit back and enjoy yourself as we reminisce the good old days that have now come full circle.
