From the Conference CEO & Founder

Welcome!

… this year we continue our emphasis on nurturing and nourishing the entire woman in all measures of health and wellness – physical, mental, financial and spiritual.

N

urturing, preserving and promoting our health challenges us all on a daily basis. The demands of our lives – family, work, volunteering – can sometimes leave our health a distant afterthought. The challenges of prioritizing our health inspired me 19 years ago to establish the SoCal Women’s Conference. Since that beginning, the goal of this conference has remained unchanged – to promote the health of individuals and our community through information, innovation and inspiration. While I started this conference for the community, I also need encouragement and help in my health struggle to do what I encourage others to do.

Despite our unchanged goal, the overwhelming COVID-19 pandemic has imposed some changes and challenges to our conference. First, we have gone virtual this year, which triggered a steep learning curve. We are grateful for the patience exhibited by our stakeholders – our attendees, sponsors, volunteers, speakers – as we have changed how we deliver the conference, but not what or why we have the conference. The tragic COVID stories that dominate the headlines provide a poignant reminder of how precious health is. The way the virus spreads and the recommended precautions of mask wearing and social distancing highlight the reality that for each of us “I am my sister’s keeper” and “I am my brother’s keeper.” We are all in this together and our actions either protect or endanger others in the

community. Our behavior today determines our and others’ well-being tomorrow. COVID-19 has also exposed systemic health disparities. We hope that the information, conversation, and resources provided by this conference help to address and bridge some of those disparities. We began with a focus on women. Too often, women have allowed their own health to suffer as they nurtured their families. Similar to the standard airline safety warning to “secure your own oxygen mask before securing that of a traveling companion,” we seek to encourage women to secure their own oxygen masks in the form of taking care of their own health first. With that in mind, this year we continue our emphasis on nurturing and nourishing the entire woman in all measures of health and wellness – physical, mental, financial and spiritual. While maintaining our emphasis on women, five years ago we added the Man Cave to provide a safe, peer forum to address men’s health issues. We realized that men often neglect their health and a high tolerance for pain is not a good substitute for knowledge and preventative care. Knowingly and lovingly inspired, we created the Man Cave to provide a fun, relaxed environment for men to discuss and learn about men’s health issues.

From the Conference CEO & Founder We are blessed to have a community of amazing volunteers, sponsors, speakers and vendors who produce this health conference. I want to give special thanks to our amazing Conference Executive Team: • Hon. Kathryn Barger – Conference Co-Chair • Lisa Stevens – Conference Co-Chair • Denise Morey – COO • Janet Braun – Advisory Board • Hon. John J. Kennedy – Man Cave Chair • Clark Rucker – Man Cave Director • B everly Morgan-Sandoz – Advisory Board & Director of Workshops • I rina Melkumyan – Young Women’s Commission Director • B onita Bennett – Young Women’s Commission Chair I also want to thank our Conference Leadership Team: • Deborrah Carter – Public Relations Chair • Andrew Delgado – Social Media • Elisia Farmer – Community Engagement Specialist • Haidee Lagunday – Training Chair • Serge Nelson – Volunteer Chair • Jerry Robin – Magazine & Signage • Annette Spence – Outreach Chair • Alma Stokes – Decorations Chair • Noreen Sullivan – Keynote Speakers • Juanita Tillman – Green Room Co-Chair • Lynnette West – Green Room Co-Chair • Ron Carter – Man Cave Executive Team

Thanks also to the many many volunteers who served on the committees. I want to give a special thanks to Denise Morey, Elisia Farmer, Jahmal Ellis, and Jarius Ellis who followed COVID-19 protocols as they assembled 400 Swag Boxes in the cold and then delivered them in one week; normally, 40 to 50 volunteers assemble the boxes. We are also very grateful for the generous sponsors who make this free event possible: Methodist Hospital of Southern California; Aon; UPS; Teena Hostovich; L.L. Kennedy & Associates; Capital Group; Los Angeles County Supervisor Kathryn Barger; City of Hope; Julia Gouw; AT&T; Blue Shield of California; Gamma Zeta Boule Foundation; Huntington Hospital; Janet Braun; Metrolink; Southern California Gas Company; Ellen’s Silk Screening; Northrop Grumman; Congresswoman Judy Chu; City National Bank; Enterprise Rent-a-Car; South Coast AQMD; City of Pasadena; Clark Rucker; Carolyn Williams; L.A. Focus; Qwendolyn Price; ABC Channel 7; The Pasadena/San Gabriel Valley Journal; Outlook Newspapers; Pasadena Media; and KJazz 88.1 FM. Additional thanks to the Workshop Presenters for contributing their time and expertise. Last but not least, thanks to the vendors for providing their services and goods. Please visit the Green Room to shop for you and yours. I would be remiss if I didn’t mention the social justice journey our country is traveling in the aftermath of the tragic death of George Floyd and so many others. Enjoy the conference. We are glad to have you join us on a continued journey to better health. Let’s get better together! To your health – your true wealth!

From the Conference Co-Founder

W

ell, it’s that time again. The Health, Beauty, Empowerment Expo Man Cave is here!

As we celebrate 20 years of service to the Southern California area, we find that 2020 has brought a whole new set of health-related challenges. The COVID-19 global pandemic caught us all by surprise and certainly we never thought it would last this long. Nonetheless, we are determined to bring you the best possible virtual conference. We will create an interactive conference that will bring you as close to an in-person experience as possible. That includes the healthrelated discussions, beauty workshops, empowerment seminars and more. One workshop we believe will be of tremendous value to our attendees is our Mental Health discussion as it relates to COVID19. And no conference would be complete without our ever-popular ‘Man Cave’. With all the activities and speakers planned for this event the conference will be as exciting and informative as ever. We hope that you and your families are continuing to stay safe and we look forward to ‘seeing’ you at the conference.

s we watch the hope-inspiring rollout of COVID-19 vaccines, we must remember the continued need for safety as we work our way through this unprecedented health crisis. Following safety guidelines remains critical.

disinfect frequently touched surfaces daily. We must continue to avoid gatherings with those outside of our households. We must remember that we are safer at home. We must continue to proceed with an abundance of caution. We must continue to monitor our health daily and be alert for symptoms. Even as we continue to do all we can to prevent contracting or spreading the coronavirus, we must not forget the other factors that impact our well-being: 1. We still need to eat a wellbalanced, low-fat diet with lots of fruits, vegetables and whole grains in order to maintain a healthy weight.

We must continue to wear a mask to protect ourselves as well as others around us. We must continue to wash our hands often. We must continue to stay socially distanced from one another. We must continue to clean and

“ Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own, you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your bodies.” – 1 Corinthians 6:19-20 5. And, we still need to attend health fairs and conferences, albeit virtually now, to become more educated on ways that we can remain healthy. As the First Lady of First AME Church of Pasadena, I am proud of our annual conference that focuses on breast cancer and black women. Collectively, we cannot do enough of these types of programs. It is vital that we all remain engaged year round. Community and civic engagement are critical to changing lives.

As it did for 19 years before the pandemic, the SoCal Women’s Health Conference continues to be a vital source of information that inspires us to live our best, healthiest lives. Whether in person or virtual, the conference provides a good mixture of general information on a variety of topics relating to good health in one setting. It provides essential and necessary information for all age groups. It increases our awareness about various health issues. It provides opportunities for community members to learn how to help keep themselves and their families healthy and safe. It embraces the spirit of volunteers who collaborate to donate their time to

ensure that community members are able to live the healthiest lives possible. It inspires lifestyle changes. I am grateful that even in the midst of an overwhelming pandemic, we are provided a way to still reap the benefits of the SoCal Women’s Health Conference virtually. That spirit of resilience and resourcefulness is the same spirit

we should all tap to safely survive this pandemic. While COVID-19 has seemed to consume all of the oxygen in the room, this conference returns our focus to other areas that are essential to our wellbeing and good health. We are responsible for ourselves and we need to hold ourselves accountable. Keeping ourselves healthy is the best thing we can do for ourselves and our loved ones.

Cancer in a Time of COVID

I

know many of you share the sentiment “Is it over yet?!” about 2020, as well as the anxiety and sense of living in the Apocalypse. Financially, emotionally, spiritually, all of our resources have been tested to the limit. And I have several friends who have lost loved ones to this unprecedented virus that spread across the world, leaving 300,000 Americans dead and many ill with lasting complications. I have been fortunate to have been able to work from home since March of this year. As much as I do realize what a gift that is, there are times when I think I will lose my mind from sitting at a computer for hours on end. It’s lonely not to see colleagues, clients, family or friends (apparently, my husband and son don’t feel the need to entertain me daily! I do realize how important there love and support is, so that is a blessing). So I was hard-pressed to find a silver lining in this terrible time in our history. And yet…

I travel the world for my job – sounds fun and glamorous – and certainly can be – but the exhaustion and stress can also overwhelm at times. This year, I was unable to go anywhere after my last flight home on February 26, 2020 from London and viewed it as a moment to live life more slowly. Because the fall is a particularly heavy travel time normally, I had a few more hours each day. So it was 22 So Cal Women’s Conference – Celebrating 20 Years of Service

by Teena Hostovich

that in October, I noticed a previously innocuous mole below my clavicle. It had darkened and changed shape slightly – not dramatically – and this is the important point I want to share with all of you – it was very subtle. So subtle that in a normal year, I would have waited until after the fall travel and holidays to deal with that. Since I had more time, I opted to go see my internist, the amazing Dr. Cecilia Kaesler and then per her recommendation, my fantastic dermatologist, Dr. Heather Butler. In Dr. Butler’s office, it became apparent that something was wrong – her expression was one of extreme concern, and she told me that I had a likely “malignant melanoma” not an unattractive mole. I didn’t fully understand what all that meant, but she patiently explained that she would excise what she could in the office, send off to pathology and refer me to City of Hope. And yes, I got to hear the words that I’ve lived in fear of my entire life (given my family history with my mother and other family), “You have cancer.” Like many people, I thought skin cancer wasn’t a huge deal. I had not been out in the sun for many years, faithfully wear sunblock now and hats on occasion. Little did I know that much of the damage was done in my teens and 20’s when I would go in search of sun and fun. There are over 3 million new cases of skin cancer every year, it is the most

… l ife can turn on a dime. Sometimes, the worst happens. Sometimes, we are granted a gift, a miracle. prevalent in the US; melanoma – which I had – is only 1 per cent, but it is the most deadly. The pathology report came back as Stage 2 and would require surgery and testing of my lymph nodes. I was blessed to be connected with the City of Hope – truly the best of the best in treating cancer in all forms. Dr. Benjamin Paz, head of Surgical Oncology, was my doctor and took amazing care of me. He was very calm and reassuring throughout my “cancer journey.” And because I sought treatment early (not my usual behavior), I am now cancer-free. The point of all of this is that life can turn on a dime. Sometimes, the worst happens. Sometimes, we are granted a gift, a miracle. I was 5 weeks from diagnosis to cancer free. But in any other year, I would certainly have waited until probably February, and given the aggressive growth (from zero to Stage 2 in 60 days) I could have had a Stage 3 or Stage 4 diagnosis – and I might be dead by May 2021. This is based on research and conversations at COH. Given the loss of life in our amazing country right now from a dreadful virus that keeps changing the rules, I almost feel guilty talking about my experience. But my point honestly is to make all of you aware

that something seemingly small can literally kill you. Please be attentive to little things that your body is telling you – “Something is off; you need to listen to me!” Whether it’s a small lump in your breast, a mole, chest pain, fast heart rate, tummy trouble and on and on, please don’t ignore it. I want all of you to be well and able to contribute your special gifts, love and kindness to the world. As we learned this year, we are all in this together.

One of the many special gifts of the Southern California Women’s Health Conference and Lena’s vision is that many women get new information about how to stay healthy and to cope with minor and serious illness. I am honored to have been part of this for all of the 20 years, and I am blessed by being able to connect with all of you. Please stay safe and well; sending you love for these unprecented holidays!!!! So Cal Women’s Conference – Celebrating 20 Years of Service 23

Welcome to our 2020 “Man Cave” Event – Our Health Is Our Wealth!

T

his year has been full of trials and tribulations for our country and for everyone around the globe. However, it is the hope of the Man Cave Board that this year’s event will bring each of you closure and provide you introspective insights on how to enhance your conscious, continued effort to remain healthy and engaged in your community.

As we reflect on the past year, we began by facing a destructive virus that attacked everyone in our community. When it began, many of us thought that COVID would pass by the summer, but it stayed, gaining momentum through each social gathering. Some thought that a Vaccine would have been created and issued by the fall, but yet we remain in wait. COVID wasn’t the only issue we faced this year. As we remember George Floyd, Breanna Taylor, and many others, Social Injustice reared its ugly head in our country yet again. We are addressing the COVID issue this year by holding a Virtual Man Cave event and, have invited speakers who will address COVID and Social Injustice head on. Attendees will

have a chance to interact with dynamic speakers who are engaging, and knowledgeable in these areas. They will learn that many male related illnesses and diseases are preventable and can be lessened by early detection and hopefully, not impacted by COVID-19. We will also discuss topics on Social Injustice such as an examination of 21st Century protests and advocacy in the context of the Black Lives Matter and Anti-Racism movement, as well as learning to navigate the uncertain racial terrain of today’s America. In closing, this year is the 20 year anniversary of the So Cal Women’s Health Conference and our Seventh (7th) Man Cave event. You’re in store for a great experience so have a great time. Relax, enjoy the ride, Swag Box, Q&A prizes, our featured Bingo Game and the camaraderie with the other men. Most of all the outstanding speakers who will provide you with valuable information that will assist you with your goal of maintaining a healthy lifestyle.

Elizabeth Ellis Jairus Ellis DANCE EXERCISE With more than three decades of dancing, Elizabeth Ellis still loves to dance and to teach others. She started dancing at the tender age of 10 when her oldest sister exposed her to African and Afro-Cuban dances and she fell in love with dance. She would choreograph dance routines in high school and the group was always invited to other schools to perform as well as compete against other dancers and dancing groups, where she received trophies for best choreographer and best group routine. She continued to learn dance at PCC, eventually trying out for a dance group that taught her theatrical dance. Jairus Ellis, Elizabeth and Reddell Ellis’ son, started in sports at 6 and track at 8 years old. He soon found out that being healthy and fit was not easy; it was a lot of hard work! While training for the 2000 Olympics he tore a hamstring right before trials. After vigorous rehabilitation with the support and motivation of the doctors and their prognosis that I may never run or walk normal again, he became a personal trainer. He made the decision that if he could not accomplish his dream to become an Olympian, he would do his very best to help someone else. Now, his passion and dream is to help others become their best!

“The ‘Anomaly’ that heals disparities”

What Makes HCIS© Different

Unlike any other school-based healthcare model today, the HCIS© approach is unique in that it provides early assessment and timely intervention of mental, physical and behavioral health issues, including post-traumatic stress disorders, and provides hands-on continuity of care for K-12 students. HCIS© is finding that when these impediments to learning (especially childhood trauma) are diagnosed early on and treated with best practices, he or she is given the best chance to learn and succeed academically and break the cycle of poverty, illiteracy, and unemployment. Furthermore, the HCIS© enhanced model represents a new standard of comprehensive and holistic school health that brings a cost-effective opportunity to develop prevention and clinical public health interventions for economically disadvantaged communities that can be easily replicated in any school district globally. Please call today if you would like to learn more about “how to implement school-based health services including ACEs Aware trauma screening” at your school. No cost to school, students or parents!
