From the Conference CEO & Founder

Welcome!

emphasis on nurturing and nourishing the entire woman in all measures of health and wellness – physical, mental, financial and spiritual.

While maintaining our emphasis on women, two years ago we added the Man Cave to provide a safe, peer forum to address men’s health issues. We realized that men often neglect their health and a high tolerance for pain is not a good substitute for knowledge and preventative care. Knowingly and lovingly inspired, we created the Man Cave to provide a fun, relaxed environment for men to discuss and learn about men’s health issues.

N

urturing, preserving and promoting our health challenges us all on a daily basis. The demands of our lives – family, work, volunteering – can sometimes leave our health a distant afterthought. The challenges of prioritizing our health inspired me 16 years ago to found the So Cal Women’s Health/Beauty and Empowerment Conference & Expo. Since that beginning, the goal of this conference has remained unchanged – to promote the health of individuals and our community through information, innovation and inspiration.

This year, we created “What’s Your 3?” as a guide to incremental, yet substantive ways to be healthier. Be sure to select your sets of three items for improvement as well as your buddy and encouraging partner in health.

We began with a focus on women.

Too often, women have allowed their own health to suffer as they nurtured their families. Similar to the standard airline safety warning to “secure your own oxygen mask before securing that of a traveling companion,” we seek to encourage women to secure their own oxygen masks in the form of taking care of their own health first. With that in mind, this year we continue our

or the past 16 years the Southern California Women’s Health Conference has focused on women’s health and lifestyle. While these elements have always been a part of the mission, the event is now known as The Southern California Women’s Health/Beauty and Empowerment Conference. Our aim is to empower everyone to look and feel their best – to live their best life.

This year, our goal is to empower our attendees with a variety of powerful speakers and dynamic interactive workshops. The conferences’ past success and reputation have enabled us to secure some of the best speakers, doctors, and professionals in their respective industries.

As the saying goes, ‘knowledge is power’, and we think beauty and health go together, hand in hand.

The Honorable Kathryn Barger L.A. County Supervisor, 5th District

S

upervisor Kathryn Barger proudly serves the residents of Los Angeles County’s 5th Supervisorial District – the county’s largest – spanning 2800 square miles, which includes 22 cities and 70 unincorporated communities in the San Gabriel, San Fernando, Cresenta, Santa Clarita and Antelope Valleys.

Dedicated to providing effective, responsive representation to the residents of Los Angeles County, Kathryn began her career in public service as a college student intern in the office of Supervisor Michael D. Antonovich and rose to become his Chief Deputy Supervisor in 2001, where she served until her election to the Board this past November.

During the course of her County career as chief policy advisor on Health, Mental Health, Social Service and Children’s issues, Kathryn provided leadership to deliver efficient and effective services and programs that have significantly improved the quality of life for foster children, seniors, veterans, the disabled and the mentally ill.

Committed to keeping our neighborhoods and communities safe, she has worked with state and federal leaders along with

our County District Attorney’s office, Sheriff, and other law enforcement agencies to implement tough laws and vital public safety initiatives.

She is an advocate for the environment and efforts to preserve open space, enhance parks, trails, recreational programs and facilities; and strongly supports libraries and after-school programs to serve local communities.

With a strong sense of fiscal responsibility and prudence, Kathryn is dedicated to providing vital county services while protecting financial resources as a responsible steward of taxpayer dollars.

Kathryn was born and raised in the 5th District and comes from a family with deep roots in public service in Los Angeles County. She is married to a retired Sheriff ’s deputy and lives in the San Gabriel Valley.

Jihee Huh

J

ihee Huh is currently the Vice-Chairman of PAFCO (founded in 1977) and Co-Founder of Pete’s Seafood Club, a family-owned and -operated company that believes in empowering its associates and consumers with healthy seafood meal choices.

At Children’s Hospital Los Angeles, she serves as Trustee and Vice-Chair of the Saban Research Institute and is currently a Life Trustee for Southern California Public Radio. Jihee is also a Board Trustee of CAUSE – Center for Asians United for Self Empowerment.

So Cal Women’s Health/Beauty and Empowerment Conference & Expo is near and dear to her heart. Jihee believes in the importance of education and access to healthcare information for all individuals and families. It is truly vital to leading a healthy, happy life. Teena Hostovich

T

eena Hostovich is executive vice president and partner of Lockton Insurance Brokers, LLC and a Los Angeles business leader who is actively involved in the community. As Lockton’s top female partner internationally, she is recognized as a leading global authority on professional liability and complex risk.

Her professional achievements have garnered various insurance industry and business awards. Teena has been named one of 50 “Women to Watch” internationally by Business Insurance, among the “Top 40 Women in Los Angeles” in the “Executive of the Year” category by the Los Angeles Business Journal, and Risk and Insurance Magazine’s 2011 Power Broker® and Responsibility Leader®. She also has been recognized by the California State Legislature as “Outstanding Corporate Woman” for her contributions to the community, which have focused on organizations committed to diversity, the arts, at-risk girls and their families, as well as the professional development of young women.

Her positive leadership, intellectual creativity, integrity and strong work ethic has served as an inspiration to young women she has mentored, many of whom are now in senior positions in the industry. She represents the ideology that there are no boundaries to what a woman can achieve in business. She is teaching a leadership workshop focusing on career planning and development for a group of USC Marshall School of Business students, and is a member of the Board of Leaders of the Marshall School of Business at USC.

Pastor Jean Burch Community Bible Church of Greater Pasadena

P

astor Jean Burch is the senior pastor of Community Bible Church of Greater Pasadena. Prior to her appointment as senior pastor in April 2000 she served the church as assistant pastor under her father, Pastor Emeritus John W. Burch. In March of 2000 Pastor Jean ended a 20-year career in the legal profession to become a full time pastor. She is simply and affectionately known as “Pastor Jean.”

She earned her B.A. degree from Biola University in Organizational Leadership with an emphasis in Biblical Studies and is currently in the Master of Arts, Global Leadership program at Fuller Theological Seminary.

Pastor Jean served as an instructor at the Southern California School of Ministry, teaching a class entitled, “Women in Ministry.”

She is an occasional guest lecturer for courses at Fuller Theological Seminary and previously served three years on the faculty of the Lloyd Ogilive, “Preaching with Passion Conferences.” Most recently she traveled to South Africa with Bishop Joseph Garlington and the Reconciliation! Ministries team, teaching a class on “Women in Ministry.”

Executive Vice President of Odeon Capital Group

hristina Martin is EVP of Odeon Capital Group, Series 7 & 63, where she trades currencies for institutional clients. For 10 years, Christina also ran the trademarked global marketing platform, Backstage Artist Lounge, touring with 500 famous artists ranging from Motley Crue to Ellie Goulding. Prior to these roles, Christina served 2 years as Vice President of STW with over $12 BLN in fixed income under management where she was responsible for North America, the UK and Europe. Prior to that, Christina traded derivatives in the OTC market at Charles Schwab’s headquarters, going on to become Vice President of a statistical arbitrage hedge fund. Christina was elected and has served three years as Trustee on the Board of the University of Colorado Foundation with over $1 BLN in assets.

Keisha Nix

K

Christina received her Bachelor of Arts in International Affairs from the University of Colorado at Boulder where she graduated Summa Cum Laude and, years later, was honored to be their School of Economics graduation Commencement Speaker.

During her undergraduate studies, Christina worked for the Federal Reserve System Bank 10th District and conducted International Finance research at the Board of Governors. Christina also did her VFR Private Pilot’s license, MBA at UCLA Anderson and Adventure Sports Institute military orienteering, rock climbing and survival skills. Christina won a national poetry competition and had numerous articles published. She won VH1’s “Rockband 2 the Stars,” worked on several feature films and recently starred in Saint Asonia’s action-packed “Fairy Tale” music video (RCA Records). Christina has put her music relationships to good use in orchestrating several wishes coming true for Make-A-Wish Foundation. Christina serves on the Board of Geena Davis’s Institute on Gender in Media.

Executive Director, Lakers Youth Foundation

iesha Nix is currently the Executive Director of the Lakers Youth Foundation. Kiesha oversees and directs programming and funding priorities for the charitable arm of the Los Angeles Lakers. She is responsible for implementing the mission of the Foundation which is to assist underserved youth in our communities to develop and recognize their full potential by providing positive experiences and resources in education, health & wellness and sports.

Formerly, Kiesha served as a Vice President in Enterprise Business & Community Relations at Bank of America – Merrill Lynch for 21+ years.

On the Philanthropic side Kiesha currently sits on the following Boards: Advisory Board for the Los Angeles Dodgers and MLB’s RBI program (Reviving Baseball in Inner Cities), USC Black Alumni Advisory Board and KHEIR (Korean Healthcare Education Information & Research Center). Kiesha works with countless non-profit organizations and mentors Youth throughout her Community. She holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in English from the University of Nevada. Kiesha is the proud Mom of one son; Kyler who is a recent graduate of Fisk University in Nashville, TN achieving a Bachelor of Science degree in Business and currently employed at a Fortune 500 Investment Firm.

Rebecca Steel Roven Oakley Vice President of Production – Motion Pictures & Television

R

ebecca Steel Roven Oakley is the Vice President of Production at one of Hollywood’s most respected production companies, Atlas Entertainment. The daughter of Charles Roven and industry legend Dawn Steel, Rebecca was a part of the Atlas family long before she officially joined the company after graduating from the University of Chicago.

Rebecca started in the industry assisting the camera department on Terry Gilliam’s THE BROTHERS GRIMM when she was only 16 years old. Rebecca was an Associate Producer on

the first feature produced by Atlas Independent, REVENGE FOR JOLLY, which she brought to the company while still an assistant. Recently, she has served as Co-Producer on the feature film WARCRAFT, based off the popular video game series, which cumulatively grossed over $433 million in domestic and international box offices. Rebecca is an Executive Producer on the record-breaking hit WONDER WOMAN. The film has earned over $820 million worldwide so far and broken numerous records including highest-grossing live-action movie directed by a woman and is currently the fifth highest-grossing comic book adaptation at the domestic box office.

Kyler Franklin Youth Pastor

K

yler Franklin is a Southern California native, born and raised in Los Angeles. He is the product of Dorsey High School and a graduate of Fisk University where he received his Bachelors of Science in Business Administration. Kyler currently works as in their Branch Analyst program at Morgan Stanley. Beyond his professional stature, Kyler is very active in his community. He teaches financial literacy, volunteer with local organizations that help individuals and families from low social economic backgrounds. Being the product of an amazing single mom, one of the most important things to Kyler is being a mentor to young African American males in his community.

At 16 years old Kyler’s life changed when he received his call to

ministry and began preaching. Hearing the voice of God has lead Kyler to dedicate his life to being the Man For God through mission trips to Mexico, leading college ministries, and of course preaching on Sundays. Kyler prides himself on being a member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity and a huge Laker fan. But through all his professional accomplishments and ministry, Kyler says, “All that I am, because of God and my amazing mother – Kiesha Nix.”

Hon. Betty Yee California State Controller

N

ow serving as the state’s chief fiscal officer, Ms. Yee also chairs the Franchise Tax Board and serves as a member of the California Public Employees’ Retirement System (CalPERS) and the California State Teachers’ Retirement System (CalSTRS) Boards. These two boards have a combined portfolio of nearly $500 billion. Ms. Yee also serves on the Ceres Board of Directors, a nonprofit organization working to mobilize many of the world’s largest investors to advance global sustainability and take stronger action on climate change.

Ms. Yee has more than 30 years of experience in public service, specializing in state and local finance and tax policy.

She previously served as Chief Deputy Director for Budget with the California Department of Finance where she led the

development of the Governor’s Budget, negotiations with the Legislature and key budget stakeholders, and fiscal analyses of legislation on behalf of the Administration. Prior to this, Ms. Yee served in senior staff positions for several fiscal and policy committees in both houses of the California State Legislature.

Varetta Heidelberg Multi-Talented Performer

A

s a saxophonist, flautist, and vocalist – the performing arts have always been an important part of Varetta’s life.

From the platform of concert halls, to the sanctuary of a church, or the center field of a prison yard – her purpose as an artist is to portray music that encourages the hearts of the listeners and soothes the soul.

She also serves as the director for Instruments of Praise, Inc. a non-profit organization that provides foundational training and skill development for young artists.

Abraham McDonald

Abraham McDonald won the hearts of millions while competing and winning Oprah’s “1st Karaoke Challenge” being judged by a few of the most intimidating leaders & legends of the entertainment field, Gladys Knight, David Foster, Diane Warren and Antonio ‘LA’ Reid.

Abraham’ s latest single “BETTER” which he performed at the 2017 Verizon Fashion & Film Awards is taking a gigantic leap forward: the music video for BETTER is now featured on MTV. com and VH1 Soul. eslie Sykes is co-anchor of the ABC7 Morning Show from 4:30 a.m. to 7 a.m., and ABC7 Eyewitness News at 11 a.m. She joined ABC7 in 1994. She was born in San Diego, California and grew up in Compton. Leslie attended St. Joseph High School and then Spelman College in Atlanta, Georgia, where she majored in English.

Upon graduation Leslie took a job as a general assignment reporter at the Los Angeles Herald Examiner. Leslie completed an internship at KCOP and was a desk assistant at KTTV before landing her first on-air job in Hattiesburg, Mississippi at WDAM. There she reported and anchored three shows a day and produced a newscast. She went on to work at WVUE in New Orleans, Louisiana.

isa Stevens, a 27-year company veteran, is an executive vice president and holds leadership positions across the country for Wells Fargo. Stevens is president for the Western Region, which includes the states of California, Oregon, Washington, Alaska and 17 states throughout the Midwest and Rocky Mountains.

Within the Western Region, Stevens has responsibility for nearly 2,700 branches, 7,150 ATMs and nearly 34,000 team members who serve consumers and small businesses.

A California native, Stevens began her career with Wells Fargo in 1989. Prior to assuming her current leadership role, she also headed Small Business Banking for six years, which provides a full range of services to three million business customers with annual revenues up to $5 million. Previously, she was president of California Regional Banking.

Long devoted to the communities she serves, Stevens is active in the nonprofit community. She serves on the boards of several nonprofit organizations, including the Executive Committee of the California Business Roundtable, Children’s Hospital Los Angeles, Arizona State University’s Global Institute of Sustainability, Los Angeles Philharmonic Association and the Board of Regents for Santa Clara University. She also served on the Board of the California Chamber of Commerce, San Francisco Opera, National Boys and Girls Club of America, The Center on Philanthropy and Public Policy and the board of The Partnership for Los Angeles Schools, California Business for Education Excellence and the Advisory Committee for The Shriver Report.

r. Micheline McFarland was born in Montreal, Québec, Canada, the second child of Benjamin and Josette Ostane, who migrated there from the Dominican Republic. She moved to Pasadena and has remained a resident since 1977. She owned and operated a Day Spa and Beauty Salon for over 20 years, in the Pasadena and Altadena area.

Since 1994, Dr. Micheline, along with her husband Dr. Anthony McFarland, has been blessing people with the anointing on her life and the Word of God through various conventions and seminars that include KingdomOfGodInternational.Org, which is designed to bring unity among all Churches in the body of Christ.

She is also the founder of DaughtersOfDivnineDestiny.Org, which help and give women a platform in fulfilling their God given call and destiny.

In the Year 2000, Dr. Micheline and her husband were installed in Pasadena, California by the honorable Apostle Frederick K.C. Price of Crenshaw Christian Center to operate as Abundant Harvest LIFT CHURCH after completing Ministry Training Institute and training under his leadership. She then later went on to obtain an honorary doctorate as leader and teacher.

Dr. Micheline, along with her husband, is a community activist bringing change in people’s lives in Pasadena, Altadena and reaching people globally.

Knowing the ABCs of Diabetes Can Greatly Improve Your Quality of Life

By Victoria Pacheco, Registered Dietitian Diabetes can be a devastating disease for many. Knowing the tools to prevent or control diabetes can greatly improve your quality of life.

According to the American Diabetes Association, 25.8 million people in the United States have diabetes. Only 5 to 10 percent of the diabetic population is Type 1, and a staggering 90 to 95 percent is Type 2. Of the 25.8 million, 7 million are undiagnosed (most likely Type 2), and as many as 79 million have pre-diabetes.

Here’s a few action steps known as the ABCs of Diabetes that can mitigate ill effects of the disease.

A is for Action: Take action before it is too late. If you are trying to prevent diabetes, know what your risks are for developing diabetes. If you already have diabetes, take action to become educated on how to manage your diabetes.

B is for Build: Build up your energy level with a nutrition and fitness program. Ask your doctor for a referral to a diabetes class. Diabetes classes are taught at Methodist Hospital. Learn how to control your blood sugars with carbohydrate counting and label reading. Build a healthy meal plan and a fun fitness program for better glucose control.

C is for Communication: Talk to your doctor if you are experiencing any of the following symptoms: • Frequent urination • Unusual thirst • Unusual weight loss • Blurred vision • Fatigue and irritability • Cuts or bruises that are slow to heal • Tingling in the hands or feet

TRUTHS AND MYTHS ABOUT DIABETES Myths about diabetes can lead to misinformation and confusion.

So much information about diabetes is available on the internet that it is sometimes difficult to tell the difference between what is true and what is not. The myths listed below are followed by truthful facts about diabetes.

Myth: Eating sugar causes diabetes Truth: Type 1 diabetes is caused by genetics and other unknown factors. Type 2 diabetes is caused by genetic and lifestyle factors. Eating sugar can cause a person to gain excessive weight which can then lead to the development of Type 2 diabetes.

Myth: People with diabetes should eat special diabetic foods Truth: People with diabetes can eat the same healthy foods as everyone else. It is not necessary to purchase special diabetic foods. A meal plan for someone with diabetes would work for anyone who is trying to eat healthier.

Myth: People with diabetes cannot eat sweets Truth: Desserts and sweets are allowed but in small amounts. Special occasions are a great time to have some special treats. Planning to have some treats for dessert? Take a 15-20 minute walk in addition to your other exercises.

Communicate with your doctor to find out which tests are right for you to check your blood sugars if you suspect you might be diabetic. For patients who already have diabetes, the symptoms above can be alleviated with optimal glucose control. Talk to your doctor about the steps that you need to take to prevent complications associated with diabetes.

California Lieutenant Governor

avin Newsom has championed innovative public policies since entering office in 1997. As a member of the San Francisco Board of Supervisors, then as mayor of San Francisco and now as Lieutenant Governor of California, Newsom has been a political visionary on issues of equality, the environment, homelessness and healthcare. Policies he has initiated and implemented have been duplicated in cities across the nation.

Shortly after being elected Lt. Gov. in 2010, Newsom gathered the ideas of key stakeholders around the state to develop an economic growth and job creation strategy. This comprehensive economic blueprint, a top priority of his administration, ensures that California remains one of the top 10 economies in the world.

Since holding public office as a member of the San Francisco Board of Supervisors, Newsom has advocated for and consistently supported quality public education for Californians. As Lt. Gov., he serves as University of California Regent and as Trustee for the California State University system and has fought to keep these institutions accessible to all. In 2012, he was the sole UC regent who voted against a tuition hike. In partnership with students, parents, teachers, administrators and the private sector, Newsom wants to preserve the state’s internationally recognized public higher education system that produces the future leaders of America.

As mayor of San Francisco, Newsom’s administration led the nation on environmental policies such as mandatory composting, plastic bag and Styrofoam bans and a prohibition on city-purchased bottled water. Shortly after establishing the most stringent green building standards in America, San Francisco then achieved the highest rate of recycling and waste diversion in the U.S. For launching these groundbreaking programs, Newsom was selected in 2010 as the greenest mayor for a second year.

As Lt. Gov., Newsom continues his environmental work as a member of the State Lands Commission, protecting California’s most precious natural resources while balancing use of lands, waterways and ports.

Prior to entering politics Newsom was a small business owner who grew one wine shop, PlumpJack, into a thriving enterprise of 15 businesses including wineries, restaurants, and hotels.

His frustrating experience with bureaucratic red tape in opening that single wine shop led to the creation of a small business assistance center when he took office. The Newsom Administration also excluded small businesses from payroll taxes and made more than $23 million available for low or no interest loans.

Connie Rice, Esq.

C

onnie Rice has received more than fifty major awards for her leadership and unorthodox approaches to challenging brutality and reversing the raw deal for kids struggling to survive in the thin soil of poverty. She is a graduate of Harvard-Radcliffe Colleges and New York University School of Law. At her organization, Advancement Project (www.

AdvancementProjectca.org), she continues her crusade for basic rights with her Urban Peace team after the 2007 release of their seminal report on gang violence in Los Angeles—A Call To Action.

Rice’s race for excellence began at home: her father broke racial barriers as a U.S. Air Force major, and her mother, a teacher, imbued a passion for learning and culture into Connie and her brothers Phil and Norman, a zeal equal parts vigor and pride.

Connie was raised to look up to women leaders of history: Queen Elizabeth I, Anne Frank, Representative Barbara Jordan.

Her father’s career took them to 17 different homes during her childhood, including periods in England and Japan, but these heroines stayed with her as constant reminders of the high potential of her future. After college at Harvard and law school at NYU, where she spent summers working on high profile death penalty litigation for the NAACP Legal Defense

and Education Fund (including the far-reaching McKleskey v. Kemp case), Rice began the work that would win her national acclaim for its attention to civil rights.

Over the course of her career, the “Lady Lawyer,” as Rice would come to be known to the Los Angeles gangmembers with whom she struck a pioneering partnership, would take on the notoriously racist and sexist LAPD, a transit system that tried to ignore its poorest users, and a public school system that Rice and her cohorts deemed inadequate.

Already a legend in Los Angeles based on these achievements alone, Connie Rice is perhaps best known for the report she co-wrote that has revolutionized the city’s law enforcement policies and outreach to gangs. I’ve attached a recent New York Times article about the transformation of the LAPD, which includes remarks from Rice, whose constant involvement with the LAPD has yielded the consummate reward: her very own parking space at headquarters.

Intellectually, we can all agree – or most of us can – that allowing everyone’s voice to be heard is better for the greater good. There may be a little girl right now living in the Amazon who has within her the power to save the rain forest. But she may never have an opportunity to have her voice heard to share this critical information. This MUST change.

What can you do to be the author of your life and the spectator? I want to share some lessons from my own life that helped me, and I hope will help you. In addition, you must ask yourself: “What do I want to achieve in my life?”

Back when I was in elementary school and middle school, girls weren’t really encouraged to think about careers, nor was there an expectation you would even go to college.

You did not have the opportunity to participate in any kind of sports or meaningful extracurricular activities.

Fortunately, there were teachers who did see the person beyond the gender and encouraged me to speak up, to share my ideas and to think about the future. I owe them a debt of gratitude, as we all do. They advocate for us and our children. Education must support girls and not minimize boys – Equality in education makes us stronger.

My first job was as a receptionist at a Japanese insurance brokerage. Since my Japanese at that time was passable from my time in high school in Japan, and my appearance was “western,” I was what they were looking for. It was there that I began to learn the business that I’ve spent the last 35 years in. I loved analyzing complex contracts, solving unusual problems and talking to the clients. I took insurance classes at night, plus my college business classes, and my days were often 20+ hours. Knowledge always

gives you power.

I am sure many of you have watched Mad Men? I was at this agency a decade after Mad Men is set, but it was a similar environment. My job duties also included polishing

the furniture, washing dishes, and buying gifts for my boss’ various girlfriends (and yes, he was married). These kinds of duties were assigned to all the women there (none of the men), and any woman who complained was immediately fired. Sometimes I was late for my classes because I had to do some last-minute cleaning or errands. This took our power away by clearly stating that our primary role was cleaning and serving the needs of our male bosses. I moved on because no promotion opportunities were forthcoming.

Through friends I met in my insurance classes, I was introduced to the largest privately-held insurance broker in the world at that time, Johnson & Higgins, and I went to work for them.

I was in the account executive training program, and one of the most senior men in the company said to me, “you’ll be 100 before you ever meet with a client.” Well, I started meeting with clients after about a year, and I haven’t made it to 100 yet, but the message was clear – you will never be equal to a man. There were two women in the entire company who had titles – vice president and assistant vice president – and they were unwilling to help other women because they were afraid of losing the little ground they had gained.

The schools that I went to, where I grew up in Southern California, were a little on the rough side. There was a lot of violence. Weapons were practically a fashion statement and drugs were everywhere. I learned a lot about people from these experiences. I learned to listen, to negotiate and to find a place for myself that I could just be without getting caught up in all the craziness. At recess, I used to hold a “story circle” for whoever wanted to come – which always ended up being 50 or so kids, including the wildest in the school. I would tell them a story each day. Being the designated “story laureate” kept me out of a lot of trouble and reinforced my love and appreciation of the power of the written and spoken word and the power of story to heal and bring people together. This was a foundation for me of how I would empower myself.

I did have a boss who believed in me, and he agreed that the firm would pay for the rest of my USC degree if I stayed for a reasonable time; that was an incredible blessing. I was at J&H for over 20 years. It was both the best professional experience I could have ever hoped for, in terms of what I learned (it was a very scholarly environment), the caliber of people and clients that I got to meet and work with, but it was also the most challenging in dealing with corporate politics and sexism. The politics would have made Machiavelli uncomfortable, and sexual harassment and discrimination were practically a competitive sport. I once had a senior executive throw an ashtray at me which resulted in six stitches and a concussion because I wouldn’t kiss him in his office. But that which doesn’t kill you

makes you stronger.

W

hen the company was sold in 1997 to Marsh – the largest broker in the world at that time – I felt it was time to move on. I joined Lockton, currently the world’s largest private insurance broker and the 9th largest overall, in 2001. The appeal to me was the entrepreneurial spirit, the freedom to always put the client first, and the lack of bureaucracy. There are over 350 partners at Lockton, but only about 30 of them are women. The percentage is

pure power!

The path to empowerment varies; we are all individuals with different skills and qualities. The key is to protect your own power; don’t allow anyone to diminish you or disrespect you – easier said than done, but…

Find your strengths – the hand only you can hold, the change only you can make, the problem only you can solve.

California is the largest state, the most diverse state, and the fifth largest economy in the world. We have tremendous potential here to create models for healthy, thriving, communities. Yet, California also has one of the highest levels of economic inequality in the nation, and our schools rank near the bottom in public funding for education – just two measures that deeply impact the health and wellbeing of women, children, and working families.

Health – the focus of this conference – is one of the most important areas in which California can lead the country.

With leaders in Washington threatening to take health coverage away from millions, the country needs California to lead and create a model for universal health coverage that is truly affordable, accessible, and comprehensive. He currently provides financial and legal services to vending machine manufacturers. Danny is a member of the California Bar and has an Industrial Engineering, MBA and law degree from Stanford. He has headed and served on numerous Stanford boards and clubs; chairs a local community center renovation steering committee.

Andrew M. Lowy, MD, FACS Chief, Division of Surgical Oncology, Professor of Surgery, Moores UC San Diego Cancer Center

A

ndrew M. Lowy, MD serves as Professor of Surgery, Chief of the Division of Surgical Oncology and Leader of the Gastrointestinal Cancer Unit at the Moores UCSD Cancer Center. Dr. Lowy’s clinical and research interests are in the area of pancreatic and gastrointestinal cancer.

Since 2005, Dr. Lowy has served as the surgical liaison for the Pancreatic Cancer Committee of the Southwest Oncology Group. From 2007-2016 he served as co-chair for the National Cancer Institute’s Pancreatic Cancer Task Force, and was elected chair in 2016. Dr. Lowy also serves on the board of the National Pancreas Foundation and as chair elect of the scientific and medical advisory board for the Pancreatic Cancer Action network.

Currently, Dr. Lowy serves as the surgical principal investigator of RTOG 0848, the largest pancreatic cancer adjuvant trial ever to be conducted in the U.S. He previously served on the editorial board of the Annals of Surgical Oncology as section editor for pancreatic tumors, and has served as section editor for translational research since 2015. ick Kittles, Ph.D., is Professor and founding director of the Division of Health Equities within the Department of Population Sciences at the City of Hope (COH). He is also Associate Director of Health Equities of COH Comprehensive Cancer Center. Dr. Kittles is well known for his research of prostate cancer and health disparities among African Americans. Dr. Kittles’ research has focused on understanding the complex issues surrounding race, genetic ancestry, and health disparities. Dr. Kittles received a Ph.D. in Biological Sciences from George Washington University in 1998. His first faculty appointment was at Howard University where he helped establish the National Human Genome Center at Howard University.

Over the last twenty years he has been at the forefront of the development of ancestry-informative genetic markers, and how genetic ancestry can be quantified and utilized in genomic studies on disease risk and outcomes. His work has shown the impact of genetic variation across populations in pharmacogenomics, biomarker discovery, and disease gene mapping. Although a major focus of Dr. Kittles’ work over the past years has been on measuring and utilizing West African admixture in studies of genetic disease among African Americans, presently he is expanding his research focus to further include Latino and Native American populations to further enhance the robustness of the experimental design of his research studies. Dr. Kittles has NIH-funded projects to study genetic and environmental modifiers of serum 25-hydroxy Vitamin D levels in order to improve our understanding of the role serum Vitamin D plays in health disparities. He is leading a multi-site collaboration studying modifiers of serum 25-hydroxy Vitamin D [25(OH)D] levels and their role on prostate cancer susceptibility.

In 2010 Dr. Kittles was named in Ebony magazine’s “The Ebony Power 100.” Ebony selected the nation’s top 100 African-American “power players” in sports, academia, religion, business, environment, science & tech, entertainment, arts and letters, fashion, politics, media, activism and health. In March of 2012 Dr. Kittles presented the Keynote Address to the United Nations General Assembly, “International Day of Remembrance of Victims of Slavery and the Transatlantic Slave Trade.” Recently Dr. Kittles was named by The Huffington Post as one of “50 Iconic Black Trailblazers Who Represent Every State In America.”

Dr. Kittles has published over 160 research articles on prostate cancer genetics, Race and Genetics, and health disparities.

A Queens, NY native, Walden McPhee has been knitting over 20 years. “Originally knitting by hand for her daughters and herself, her work received recognition from family and friends, who began requesting me to make pieces for them. ButterFli offers new path for assisted transport services

How can a business help give disabled people access to the world?

That’s one of the main questions behind ButterFLi, a company created in 2016, to provide on-demand assisted transportation to Southern Californians with disabilities. And already, the company is angling to go national.

Theirs is not exactly an overnight success story, though. For nearly two decades prior to starting ButterFLi, Delilah Lanoix and John Harris ran a transportation company for riders with disabilities. They grew the business from four vehicles to 170, yet maintained a desire to offer an even more transformational service.

Downard says. As they discuss the business, the three co-founders often excitedly riff on each other’s ideas, and occasionally poke playful fun at each other.

An early management challenge involved agreeing on messaging to reach transportation providers that were resistant to changes in their well-established and relatively effective processes. But when opinions diverge, the co-founders return to the central mission of ButterFLi: what’s going to change the lives of the people who use the company’s service?

For example, if a provider’s fleet is used only 40 to 50 percent of the time, leveraging ButterFLi’s software could make the utilization rate jump to 80 percent.

“We’re changing the way transportation providers think about what they can do,” says Lanoix. “They were not thinking that they could offer a demand service for a reasonable price. We show them how to do that.”

In the near future, as their network expands, the company also plans to leverage its collective buying power to assist individual providers with insurance rates and fuel prices.

“We can both improve their service and impact their budgets,” says Lanoix.

“The typical non-emergency medical transportation industry had been inundated with typical brokers. We don’t recognize ourselves as brokers.”

ButterFLi wants their providers to grow with them, and the ButterFLi team credits Chase with helping facilitate this growth.

Working with Chase Merchant Services, they have faster payments, and a move to an automated clearing house will accelerate the process even further.

For its own growth, ButterFLi plans to move fast, growing from thousands of rides per week in fourth quarter 2017 to tens of thousands of rides per week by second quarter 2018.

“It’s all about growth,” says Downard.

“We’re a nascent company but we’ve already found a lot of different markets where our message is beyond resonant and where we’ve gotten incredible traction. Now it’s about refining and packaging what works in the Southwest and spreading it nationally.”
