During Maria’s surgery, Dr. La Mar created a small pouch in her stomach and connected it directly to her small intestine. This greatly limited the amount of food her stomach could hold. This procedure also reduced the amount of calories Maria could absorb, since the food was no longer passing through most of her stomach or the first part of her small intestine.

It has been four years, and Maria feels that any lifestyle changes she has had to make have been completely worth it. Certain foods, especially greasy items, are completely off the menu. But she has been pleasantly surprised by some of the spicy foods she is still able to enjoy. For Maria, it came down to choices. And she has no doubt she made the right one. “I’m the kind of person who, once I make up my mind, I am set,” she said. “I did my research, and I made my decision. There is no going back.”

The American Endocrine Society has endorsed gastric bypass surgery as a treatment for diabetes. According to recent studies, this surgery may cause changes in gastrointestinal hormones that improve insulin resistance. Many patients with Type 2 diabetes experience complete remission within days of metabolic surgery, long before significant weight comes off.

t is my pleasure to welcome you to the 13th Annual Southern California Women’s Health Conference and Expo. Our theme for this year, “Your Health, Your Way, You are the Driver,” was suggested by Tia Strozier, a law school student: Hamilton University and Indiana University Maurer School of Law. I am always impressed with how young minds come up with great ideas. This year we will be challenged to create a healthier lifestyle for ourselves, and each of us will take on this challenge it in our own unique and individual ways. Choosing what works for us ensures that our healthy practices are sustained lifelong.

Today’s conference will also provide an opportunity to learn more about the Affordable Care Act. We will have a workshop on the new healthcare opportunities, as well as educational booths on what the Affordable Care Act means for the insured and the uninsured. reetings and welcome to the 13th Annual Southern California Women’s Health Conference & Expo. We’re so happy you decided to spend the day with us. We hope you’ll learn and be inspired by all that you see and hear.

This conference is important because it gives each of us an opportunity to give back to the community in which we live. What better way to help our community than to provide resources for individuals to prevent life threatening illness or to gain information on how to treat those illnesses. We are blessed to have healthcare professionals who donate their time, talents and knowledge at the various workshops hosted during the event. The information they share can help us and can help us help others. As a founding member, I have seen this event grow, the depth of information expand and the number of attendees and participants increase. I’ve seen first-hand the positive impact it’s made on the lives of the attendees and their families. Many times there are people who have information and those who need information and the two don’t come together. Today is an opportunity to bridge that gap. Morning Session Speaker Hon. Judy Chu U.S. Congresswoman, California 32nd District

epresentative Judy Chu was elected in July 2009 to the U.S. House of Representatives as the Representative of California’s 32nd District, which includes East Los Angeles and the San Gabriel Valley. She

immediately got to work representing the interests of her constituents, voting on several environmental bills and working through the night on her first day in office during a marathon debate on the health care reform bill. In the 112th Congress, Rep. Chu serves on the House Judiciary Committee, where she is a member of the Crime, Terrorism, and Homeland Security and the Intellectual Property, Competition, and the Internet subcommittees. She is also a member of the House Small Business Committee, where she is leading the Contracting and Workforce Subcommittee as the Ranking Democrat and serves on the Economic Growth, Tax and Capital Access Subcommittee. In 2011, she was elected as the Chair of the Congressional Asian Pacific American Caucus (CAPAC).

She has been heavily involved in crafting legislation to create new jobs, help small businesses and improve our nation’s education and immigration systems. Congresswoman Chu’s career in politics spans 24 years. Prior to her election to Congress she served three terms as the Assemblymember representing the 49th District, where she chaired the important Assembly Appropriations Committee. A lifelong educator, Congresswoman Chu taught community college classes in Los Angeles and East Los Angeles for 20 years. She holds a Ph.D. in psychology and a B.A. in mathematics.

Teena is Presidential Partner to Barack Obama; Trustee of the Clinton Foundation and on the Strategic Planning Committee for Huntington Hospital. She is teaching at USC Marshall School of Business as a CAP Mentor. She also teaches workshops on issues facing women in the corporate world.

Invocation Pastor Jean Burch Community Bible Church of Greater Pasadena

astor Jean Burch is the senior pastor of Community Bible Church of Greater Pasadena. Prior to her appointment as senior pastor in April 2000 she served the church as assistant pastor under her father, Pastor Emeritus John W. Burch. In March of 2000 Pastor Jean ended a 20-year career in the legal profession to become a full time pastor. She is simply and affectionately known as “Pastor Jean.”

She earned her B.A. degree from Biola University in Organizational Leadership with an emphasis in Biblical Studies and is currently in the Master of Arts, Global Leadership program at Fuller Theological Seminary.

Pastor Jean was awarded the 2003 29th Congressional Women in Leadership Award presented by Congressman Adam Schiff. On July 15, 2004 she was invited by the U.S. Congress to deliver the opening prayer at a session of the U.S. House of Representatives at the Capitol in Washington, D.C. She was the 2008 recipient of the NAACP “Faith” award from the Pasadena branch. Most recently Pastor Jean was the recipient of the Police-Community Partnership Award presented by the Pasadena Police Department, May 2010.

Pastor Jean served as an instructor at the Southern California School of Ministry, teaching a class entitled, “Women in Ministry.” She is an occasional guest lecturer for courses at Fuller Theological Seminary and previously served three years on the faculty of the Lloyd Ogilive, “Preaching with Passion Conferences.” Most recently she traveled to South Africa with Bishop Joseph Garlington

She currently serves as President/CEO of the Community Bible Community Development Corporation (formerly known as Northwest Pasadena Development Corporation) that owns and operates the Community Arms Apartments and is co-owner of the Kings Villages Apartments providing 436 units of affordable housing in Pasadena. She is also a founding

member and President of the Clergy Community Coalition, a Christian group of Pastors representing the greater Pasadena area. Pastor Jean has been greatly influenced by two godly women who she refers to as her “heroes,” her grandmother and her mother, the late Mrs. Willa Burch. She finds her greatest joy in spending time with her family, in particular with her grandchildren who keep her young and busy.

s a leader of complex and diverse organizations, John J. Kennedy has significant experience in the public, private and nonprofit sectors. He has devoted his life to community service as a civic leader and community organizer.

Since September 2011, Mr. Kennedy has served as the Senior Vice President of one of the oldest and most respected civil rights organizations in the United States. Prior to that position, Mr. Kennedy was Director of Special Projects for Southern California Edison (SCE) for seven years. Locally, he worked in the Finance, City Attorney, Police and Public Works Departments of the City of Pasadena. He served as Founder and Secretary of the Pasadena Police Foundation; Chair of Community Health Alliance of Pasadena; Board Member of the Pasadena Child Health Foundation; Chair of the Community Development Committee; Co-Chair of the Library Task Force for Alternate Funding; and Chair of the Developers’ Selection Committee for Heritage Square. He wrote Pasadena’s first recycling ordinance, the Pasadena taxicab ordinance and waste haulers ordinance.

At the age of 25, he was the youngest person to serve as President of the Pasadena Branch of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People. He has dedicated much of his spare time to community organizing and working to elect and support Democratic Candidates. Mr. Kennedy is a board member of the Tom Bradley Legacy Foundation at UCLA; Black Alumni Council at the University of Southern California (USC); and serves on the National Finance Committee for the President of the United States. A Pasadena native, Mr. Kennedy was Student Body President at Blair High School and a Student Senator while at USC. He holds dual degrees from USC in International Relations and Social Science Communications (Economics) and several professional certificates as well as his Juris Doctor Degree from Howard University School of Law.

Hon. Jacque Robinson Vice Mayor, City of Pasadena

ice Mayor Jacque Robinson is serving her second term as member of the Pasadena City Council, District 1. First elected in 2007 at age 28, Jacque became the youngest elected female in the history of the city. Born and raised in Pasadena, Jacque is a product of the district she now represents. Her policy initiatives and interests lie in economic and business development, public safety, transportation, and youth violence prevention. Ms. Robinson has worked professionally on electoral campaigns for multiple labor unions and taught as adjunct faculty at Pasadena City College. She is Chair of the Foothill Workforce Investment Policy Board and a Commissioner to the Bob Hope Airport Authority.

fter graduating from Illinois State University, Chiqeeta became a high school English Teacher and Speech Team Coach. After one year, she moved into an advertising sales career with Verizon (formerly GTE Directories). After 17 years, and having held various management and sales positions all over the country, she left to become the President of Hot Rock Productions, a film and television production company

located in Los Angeles. Two years into her career with the film industry she developed breast cancer, which set her back for an entire year. She was then re-hired at Verizon where she stayed for five years becoming one of the top producing Account Executives in the company. She left Verizon to fill a Key Accounts position at AT&T Yellow Page Advertising (formerly SBC Directories) where she was the top yellow page online advertising representative for the last five years she was employed. Having breast cancer changed her life. Three years ago she left AT&T and became an Account Representative for SonoCiné, Inc., a company that manufacturers SonoCiné AWBUS, an automated whole breast ultrasound screening technology designed to find small invasive breast cancer in women with DBT (dense-breast tissue). Chiqeeta knows that the inventor of

this technology, Dr. Kevin Kelly, Breast Imaging Radiologist, saved her life because of his belief that ultrasound can detect in dense-breast tissue what mammography may miss. Today, she is the Director of Women’s Health Advocacy for SonoCiné, Inc. and, knows exactly why she had breast cancer; to educate as many women as possible about their breast density and what to do about it. She travels the country giving a fun, educational and clinically sound presentation, “Know Your Density.” Her audiences include cancer organizations, breast imaging facilities, hospitals, churches, women’s organizations and large companies. She is also on the Board of Directors of the National Women’s Survivors Alliance, a non-profit organization whose purpose is to educate, connect and inspire women whose lives have been touched by cancer.

Eric G. Walsh MD MPH Dr.PH (c) Director, City of Pasadena Public Health Department

r. Eric Walsh is the Director and Health Officer for the City of Pasadena’s Health Department in Pasadena, CA. He oversees one of only three city based health departments in the state. In his current role he champions maternal child issues such as exclusive breastfeeding for at least the first six months of life, violence prevention and intervention work, availability to affordable fruits and vegetables and access to quality health care. He is a strong believer in servant leadership and collaboration with community partners. Dr. Walsh is committed to the highest level of care for individuals infected with HIV. Dr. Walsh was born in Hartford, CT. He is a graduate of Oakwood University in Huntsville Alabama, The University of Miami Miller School of Medicine

in Miami Florida, and Loma Linda University School of Public Health in Loma Linda California. He is currently completing his Doctorate in Public Health. He is board certified in Family Medicine and is Board Eligible in Preventive Medicine and Public Health. Dr. Walsh is on staff at the Loma Linda University School of Medicine in the Family Medicine Department. Dr. Walsh served on the current and previous Presidents of the United States on the Presidential Advisory Council on HIV/ AIDS. He has been on CDC committees and served on a committee for the former Surgeon General Dr. David Satcher. Dr. Walsh is a sought-after speaker on issues such as health disparities, racism’s impact on health, maternal child health issues, and violence as a contagious disease just to name a few.

Afternoon Session Keynote Speaker Juanita L. Watts, MD Kaiser Permanente Glendale Medical Office, has dedicated her medical career to women’s health. Dr. Watts takes her commitment to the well-being of her patients to her role as the Regional Coordinator for Women’s Health for the Kaiser Permanente Southern California Region. She directs Kaiser Permanente’s ongoing efforts to maintain excellent women’s health care services to Kaiser Permanente members, as well as disseminating that knowledge to thousands through her public speaking engagements.

Also give some thought to items on which you could spend less. 2. Make savings an automatic habit: Put a portion of every paycheck you or your spouse receives into a savings account by using direct deposit or automatic transfer. Many people are much less likely to spend the money this way. 3. Pay yourself first: Set aside money for savings at the beginning of each month, rather than waiting to see what’s left at the end. Decide on a percentage of your monthly income (for example, 5-10%) to direct deposit or transfer into your savings account. 4. Set aside “extra” money into savings: If you receive a tax refund, deposit it directly into your savings account. If you or your spouse gets an increase in pay, put the extra amount into your savings. If you receive cash as a gift, save at least part of it. If you have paid off a loan, keep making the monthly payments — to yourself, in your own savings account. 5. Pay your bills on time: When you pay your bills on time, you avoid late fees, extra finance charges, disconnection of (and re-connection fees for) utility services, the cost of eviction, the cost of repossession of cars, and other issues such as bill collectors. 6. Avoid check-cashing stores: Check cashing stores charge for each check you cash. This can add up to a considerable amount each year. Consider opening a checking account at a bank and cashing your checks there instead. Check cashing is part of the service you receive as an account holder. 7. Save for retirement: If you or your spouse works for a company that has a retirement savings plan, don’t pass up the opportunity to participate. Many employers will match a portion of your contribution free of charge.

Why Do I Care If I Have Dense Breasts? – Know Your Breast Density and What to Do About it Presenter: Chiqeeta Jameson Chiqeeta Jameson is the Director of Women’s Health Advocacy for SonoCiné, Inc., a medical company that manufacturers SonoCiné AWBUS, an automated whole breast ultrasound technology designed to find small invasive breast cancer in women with dense-breast tissue. She is also on the Board of Directors of the Women’s Survivors Alliance. Her mission is to educate as many women as possible about breast density and what to do about it. Over 40% of all women in the U.S. have Dense-Breast Tissue (DBT). Over 70% of all breast cancer occurs in women who have DBT. In this workshop, learn the difference between Fatty and Dense Breast Tissue, why mammography is not enough of an examination for women with DBT, what additional examinations (such as ultrasound) are necessary and what legislation is now in place mandating that doctors notify their patients about their breast density and what that means…But is it working? Floriculture Don Antonio Lugo High School Floral Design The beautiful floral centerpieces at the Women’s Health Conference were designed and constructed by the Floriculture students, under the instruction of Christine Dominguez, at Don Antonio Lugo High School. Students enrolled in Basic and Advanced Floral courses practice their skills through projectbased curriculum that takes their work out of the classroom and into the community. Don Lugo students regularly produce floral designs for events both on campuses in the Chino Valley Unified School District, and for civic functions in the surrounding areas; they are called upon by community groups to personalize their events with magnificent, well-crafted, floral arrangements. These opportunities enhance student learning and enthusiasm by providing students with “real life” career situations and the immediate feedback from clients and receiving public. Mrs. Dominguez has taught floral design, at Don Lugo High School, since 1996 in a program that has grown to include award winning floats in the Chino Christmas parades, themed designs for the Tournament of Roses committees, and student-led workshops. Don Antonio Lugo High School is located in Chino, a part of the Chino Valley Unified School District, San Bernardino County, California. Don Lugo High School offers a diverse educational experience for both academic/collegian and vocational career paths, including preparation in engineering, culinary arts, agriculture, and medical fields.
