t is my pleasure to welcome you to the 12th Annual Southern California Women’s Health Conference and Expo. Congratulations to all of you for being here today and for taking steps towards gaining the knowledge you need to achieve greater health and wellness for you, your family, and your community.

The Committee Chairs have worked diligently, with heart and soul, to make this event successful. They have given generously of their time and resources. Rev. Cassie McCarty

Director of Mission Integration and Spiritual Care, Glendale Memorial Hospital and Health Center with the Association of Professional Chaplains, a spiritual director, and a retreat leader. Rev. McCarty received her Bachelor of Arts in Sociology at UCLA and her Master of Divinity from Fuller Theological Seminary in Pasadena with a concentration in Spiritual Direction/ Spirituality. She received additional training in the area of spiritual direction from the Spirituality Center of the Los Angeles Archdiocese.

ev. Cassie McCarty, MDiv, BCC serves as Director of Mission Integration and Spiritual Care at Glendale Memorial Hospital and Health Center. She is a board certified chaplain

As Director of Mission Integration and Spiritual Care, Rev. McCarty provides spiritual support to patients throughout the hospital, and specializes in spiritual care to Palliative Care

patients, Emergency Department patients, and the Neo-Natal Intensive Care Unit families. She also provides leadership to the Mission Council, Bioethics Committee and the hospital’s Community Grants Program, as well as serving on various hospital committees such as the Internal Review Board, Employee Recognition Committee, and Patient & Family Advisory Board.

Rev. McCarty resides in Altadena with her husband and three year old daughter and enjoys educating others about the lifelong benefits of gentle parenting, also referred to as non-violent parenting.

AFTERNOON SESSION

Pastor Jean Burch

Community Bible Church of Greater Pasadena

P

astor Jean Burch is the senior pastor of Community Bible Church of Greater Pasadena. Prior to her appointment as senior pastor in April 2000 she served the church as assistant pastor under her father, Pastor Emeritus John W. Burch. In March of 2000 Pastor Jean ended a 20-year career in the legal profession to become a full time pastor.

She is simply and affectionately known as “Pastor Jean.”

She earned her B.A. degree from Biola University in Organizational Leadership with an emphasis in Biblical Studies and is currently in the Master of Arts, Global Leadership program at Fuller Theological Seminary.

Pastor Jean served as an instructor at the Southern California School of Ministry, teaching a class entitled, “Women in Ministry.” She is an occasional guest lecturer for courses at Fuller Theological Seminary and previously served three years on the faculty of the Lloyd Ogilive, “Preaching with Passion Conferences.”

Most recently she traveled to South

Africa with Bishop Joseph Garlington and the Reconciliation! Ministries team, teaching a class on “Women in Ministry.”

Pastor Jean was awarded the 2003 29th Congressional Women in Leadership Award presented by Congressman Adam Schiff. On July 15, 2004 she was invited by the U.S. Congress to deliver the opening prayer at a session of the U.S. House of Representatives at the Capitol in Washington, D.C. She was the 2008 recipient of the NAACP “Faith” award from the Pasadena branch. Most recently Pastor Jean was the recipient of the Police-Community Partnership Award presented by the Pasadena Police Department, May 2010.

She currently serves as President/CEO of the Community Bible Community Development Corporation (formerly known as Northwest Pasadena Development Corporation) that owns and operates the Community Arms Apartments and is co-owner of the Kings Villages Apartments providing

436 units of affordable housing in Pasadena. She is also a founding member and President of the Clergy Community Coalition, a Christian group of Pastors representing the greater Pasadena area.

Pastor Jean has been greatly influenced by two godly women who she refers to as her “heroes,” her grandmother and her mother, the late Mrs. Willa Burch.

She finds her greatest joy in spending time with her family, in particular with her grandchildren who keep her young and busy.

Deborah Kay Sanchez

D

eborah Kay Sanchez has served as a licensed realtor for the past several years after retiring from a 30-year nursing career. Following graduation from nursing school she was a school nurse at Landmark West, an extraordinary learning environment for students with unique learning styles.

She completed her nursing career as a Medical Officer at Saint Catherine’s, a prestigious international boarding school in Orange County, California.

Deborah Kay has an extensive background in pediatric nursing with a special interest in educational development. She has received several awards for her exceptional nursing, including the Florence Nightingale Award for Outstanding Performance and Competency from the Westside Hospitals, Excellence in Nursing from the Archdiocese of Orange, and from the State of California for her efforts to mainstream special needs children into a traditional pre-school environment.

She served as a Contributing Instructor for the State of California in the Certified Nursing Assistant Program and developed curriculum and training for caregivers in Adolescent Board and Care State Certified Homes.

Generous with her personal time and talents, Deborah Kay has served as the president or on the board of directors for several non-profit community organizations, including the Pasadena Police Activities League (PAL), the Boys & Girls Club of Fullerton, Damas

de Caridad in support of St. Jude Medical Center, Saint Catherine’s Military School, and Catholic Charities.

She has been involved in many local partnerships to address homelessness.

Deborah received the Phenomenal Woman Award from Pasadena LINKS for her dedication to the Pasadena community. She and her husband, Pasadena Police Chief Phillip L. Sanchez, have been the recipients of the American Cancer Society Distinguished Community Award.

In June 2011, she organized and hosted an annual luncheon in honor of the spouses of Pasadena Police Officers.

Deborah Kay dubbed the luncheon, “Silent Heroes.” This extraordinary event was held at the Tournament House and over 80 men and women attended. The event was recognized and commended by Pasadena Mayor Bill Bogaard and the City Council.

AFTERNOON SESSION

Denise Dador

ABC7 Eyewitness News

D

enise Dador is the Eyewitness News Health specialist. Her Healthy Living segment is seen every day on ABC7 Eyewitness News at 4pm and 5pm. She provides additional stories about health issues for other Eyewitness News broadcasts as well as anchoring ABC7 Health specials.

In 1990, Denise took a position at Fox’s KMPH in Fresno, CA. Initially a general assignment reporter, Denise was appointed South Valley bureau chief and eventually became the main anchor of the station’s nightly news. She joined ABC affiliate WXYZ in Detroit, Michigan as their health reporter in 1993. She was served as the weekend anchor, and hosted a weekly news program called “Healthy Living Live.”

Since joining ABC7 Eyewitness News in 1998, Denise has also covered breaking news, including the February 2001 Seattle Earthquake, as well as an exclusive interview with the President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo regarding terrorist activities in the Philippines.

Denise was the recipient of an Emmy for outstanding news feature reporting.

She was awarded Best News Feature from the Michigan Association of Broadcasters, as well as the Outstanding Health Reporting award from the Southern Christian Leadership Conference. Denise received the Profiles in Progress award from the American Cancer Society for a series on breast cancer.

The Filipino American Library, SIPA and various other notable Filipino American groups have also honored Denise for her commitment to community involvement.

Keynote Speaker – Morning Session Hon. Judy Chu

U.S. Congresswoman, California 32nd District

R

epresentative Judy Chu was elected in July 2009 to the U.S. House of Representatives as the Representative of California’s 32nd District, which includes East Los

Angeles and the San Gabriel Valley. She immediately got to work representing the interests of her constituents, voting on several environmental bills and working through the night on her first day in office during a marathon debate on the health care reform bill.

In the 112th Congress, Rep. Chu serves on the House Judiciary Committee, where she is a member of the Crime, Terrorism, and Homeland Security and the Intellectual Property, Competition, and the Internet subcommittees. She is also a member of the House Small Business Committee, where she is leading the Contracting and Workforce Subcommittee as the Ranking Democrat and serves on the Economic Growth, Tax and Capital Access Subcommittee.

In 2011, she was elected as the Chair of the Congressional Asian Pacific

American Caucus (CAPAC).

She has been heavily involved in crafting legislation to create new jobs, help small businesses and improve our nation’s education and immigration systems.

Congresswoman Chu’s career in politics spans 24 years. Prior to her election to Congress she served three terms as the Assemblymember representing the 49th District, where she chaired the important Assembly Appropriations Committee. A lifelong educator, Congresswoman Chu taught community college classes in Los Angeles and East Los Angeles for 20 years. She holds a Ph.D. in psychology and a B.A. in mathematics.

Keynote Speakers – Afternoon Session Sheryl Lee Ralph Entertainer and Author acclaimed veteran of film, television and the Broadway stage. Her awardwinning work includes creating the role of Deena Jones in the legendary Broadway musical, “Dreamgirls,” and earning Best Actress nods for Tony and Drama Desk Awards. Recently, she returned to Broadway for a 12-month stint in the Tony-award winning musical, “Thoroughly Modern Millie,’ portraying the sassy chanteuse Muzzy Van Hossmere.

W

ith continued success on stage, screen, television and music along with her philanthropic endeavors, Sheryl Lee Ralph has never been one to rest on her laurels. A triple threat dreamgirl, Ralph is an

de Niro; “To Sleep With Anger” with Danny Glover and “The Distinguished Gentleman” with Eddie Murphy. Ralph picked up a win for Best Supporting Actress at the Independent Spirit Awards for her performance in “To Sleep With Anger.”

No stranger to television, Sheryl Lee Ralph’s credits include “It’s a Living,” “Designing Women,” “The District,” and most notably, “Moesha.” On the big screen, she has worked with some of Hollywood’s leading and award-winning men with film credits that include “The Mighty Quinn” with Denzel Washington; “Mistress” with Robert

Raised between Mandeville, Jamaica, and Long Island NY, Sheryl Lee Ralph was born in Waterbury CT to an African American father and a Jamaican mother.

Sheryl attended Uniondale High School in Uniondale NY. In 1973, she was crowned Miss Black Teen-age New York.

At 19, Ralph was the youngest female to ever graduate from Rutgers University.

Also that year she was named as one of the top 10 college women in America

by Glamour magazine. Ralph is married to Pennsylvania State Senator Vincent Hughes.

Eric G. Walsh MD MPH Dr.PH (c)

Director, City of Pasadena Public Health Department

D

r. Eric Walsh is the Director and Health Officer for the City of Pasadena’s Health Department in Pasadena, CA. He oversees one of only three city based health departments in the state.

In his current role he champions maternal child issues such as exclusive breastfeeding for at least the first 6 months of life, violence prevention and intervention work, availability to affordable fruits and vegetables and access to quality health care. He is a strong believer in servant leadership and collaboration with community partners.

Dr. Walsh is committed to the highest level of care for individuals infected with HIV. Dr. Walsh was born in Hartford, CT. He is a graduate of Oakwood University in Huntsville Alabama, The University of Miami Miller School of Medicine

in Miami Florida, and Loma Linda University School of Public Health in Loma Linda California. He is currently completing his Doctorate in Public Health. He is board certified in Family Medicine and is Board Eligible in Preventive Medicine and Public Health.

Dr. Walsh is on staff at the Loma Linda University School of Medicine in the Family Medicine Department. Dr. Walsh served on the current and previous Presidents of the United States on the Presidential Advisory Council on HIV/ AIDS. He has been on CDC committees and served on a committee for the former Surgeon General Dr. David Satcher.

Dr. Walsh is a sought-after speaker on issues such as health disparities, racism’s impact on health, maternal child health issues, and violence as a contagious disease just to name a few.

4. E xercise: Nature’s Way to Combat Heart Disease… it doesn’t have to hurt!

Presenter: Michelle L. Alan Galanti, MA Ms. Galanti has been the Manager of Cardiac Fitness and Non-Invasive Cardiology at Glendale Memorial Hospital & Health Center for eight years and has worked in the Cardiac Fitness Center as a Master’s prepared Exercise Physiologist since 1993. She gives lectures and presentations throughout the community on the benefits of exercise for your overall health and wellness and teaches exercise classes to the community.

This will be a lecture on the benefits of exercise in combating Heart Disease and its associated risk factors, i.e. hypertension, obesity, diabetes, hypercholesterolemia. Ms. Galanti will also discuss how it doesn’t have to hurt to be good for you!

5. Getting Better with Age: Natural Steps to 21st Century Age Defiance – It’s All About Digestion Presenter: Jayme Hirashiki Jayme Hirashiki is a health educator, nutritional researcher and president of the Ziquin Educational Group. 6. Women Preventing Violence Presenter: Elisa K. Jimenez, Ph.D. Presently, Dr. Jimenez serves in the Board of Directors for the Hata Foundation and is the California Mental Health Connections. Dr. Jimenez participated on the United Nation forum to create the law on Domestic Violence in Mexico. Modifying and creating the opportunity for women to be active in preventing, treating, and impacting their community.

This workshop is an opportunity for women to reflect on the different aspects of violence (sexual abuse, domestic violence) and gaining deeper understanding of how to prevent, treat, and be active regarding their relationship with themselves and meaningful relationships with others to decrease violence explanation of several trauma recovery alternatives.

Beauty&Exercise 7. Preservation of Fertility – What can a woman do?

Presenter: Tina Koopersmith Tina Koopersmith, MD is a board certified gynecologist and fertility specialist. Her clinical areas of expertise include fertility, recurrent loss, premature ovarian failure, and polycystic ovaries. She also offers treatment for fertility preservation for women afflicted with cancer. Dr. Koopersmith provides an unequaled level of personal attention to each patient.

This will be a lecture about the various factors that cause infertility and what a woman can do to try to prevent those causes of fertility and maximize her chances of fertility success. It will also touch on fertility preservation in cancer survivors.

8. The Healthy Plate Presenter: Peggy Mancini M.S., R.D., C.D.E., C.N.S.C. Peggy Mancini is a Clinical Dietitian II employed with City of Hope for 10 years. She is a Registered Dietitian with a Masters degree in Nutrition and a Masters degree in Counseling Psychology. Peggy is a Certified Diabetes Educator and Certified Nutrition Support Clinician with additional certifications in adult/child weight management.

In this workshop, Peggy will present the new USDA 2010 Dietary Guidelines for Americans with the rationale behind the recommendations and explain implementation of the guidelines to create a balanced meal plan – a crucial step in diabetes self-management – using the new “My Plate” replacement for the Food Pyramid.

9. Treatment of Venous Reflux Disease Presenter: Vyshali Rao, M. D. Dr. Rao is an interventional cardiologist who practices at Huntington Memorial Hospital. She is the Medical Director of the Women’s Heart Program at Huntington. She is also on the Board of Directors of the American Heart Association.

This workshop will cover three topics: A. Cause and physiology of varicose veins and spider veins in women; B. Complications arising from varicose veins; and C. Newest treatment modalities for venous disorders and varicose veins.

10. Super Mom, Super Stress Presenter: Barney Rosen, Ph.D. Dr. Rosen practices clinical psychology in Pasadena and Encino. He is the Chief Psychologist at Huntington Hospital and is a Clinical Assistant Professor of Psychiatry at the Keck School of Medicine, USC. He specializes in couples therapy and relationship “renewal.” In his 30 years of practice he has given many professional talks and been seen on numerous news programs teaching about “translating” thoughts and feelings in an empathic manner.

If you’re a mom you’re probably managing expenses, a job, endless trips shuttling kids and pets, household chores, family health crises, too much homework and partner “maintenance.” Moms are often overwhelmed, undervalued and emotionally fatigued. This workshop is geared to provide a very practical perspective on stress management for you or a special mom in your life.

11. K.I.S.S. for Fabulous Health Presenter: Dr. Teresa Swida, D.O. As a physician in private practice for over 20 years, Dr. Swida brings a wealth of training and knowledge to aid patients in their quest for optimal health and well-being.

Dr. Swida explains in her presentation how to “keep it simple stupid” in lifestyle and dietary choices to attain and maintain fabulous health, no matter what your age.

Women’s Health and the Environment Presenter: Martha Dina Arguello Martha Dina Arguello, Executive Director of Physicians for Social Responsibility – Los Angeles (PSR-LA), is a leader in California’s Environmental Health movement. As the co-convener of Californians for a Green and Healthy Economy, she is actively engaged in developing and watch-dogging the implementation of California’s Green Chemistry Initiative. She is also leading the way in engaging women’s health, reproductive health and justice groups in California’s efforts to pass a ban on the use of BPA in baby products. PSRLA is an active member of Californians for Pesticide Reform, and is leading the Healthy Homes campaign aimed at reducing the use of pesticides in low-income neighborhoods What every women should know about protecting her health: Ways to reduce risk of an escalating incidence of breast cancer associated with a wide range of avoidable carcinogenic (cancer causing) toxins found in daily life. Everyday women, we use on average of 17 personal care and cleaning products in our homes and workplaces. But do we know what is in these products? Are they safe? This workshop will explore the current information on the role of toxic chemicals on women’s health. As women we make the decisions about what products are used in our homes and now it is time to lift our voices to make sure government and industries work together to change how chemical are produced and regulated. At the end of the workshop women will have better tools to evaluate their consumer choices and ways to engage in policy change that will protect the health of their families.

S hades of Survivorship: The Impact of Cancer on Women of Color Presenter: Dr. Kimlin Tam Ashing-Giwa, Ph.D. Dr. Kimlin Tam Ashing-Giwa is professor, and director of the Center of Community Alliance for Research and Education at City of Hope. She is the notable leader in examining cancer disparities, quality of life and survivorship with over 50 articles and book chapters. She examines relevant historical and cultural contexts impacting health outcomes and culturally competent health care.

Those who suffer the greatest burden of cancer are ethnic minorities and lower-socio-economic status persons. Despite medical progress, not all populations are benefiting from these advances. This workshop will present factors affecting quality of life and the role of advocates in addressing the inclusion of diverse communities in the cancer arena.

Dr. Attai is a graduate of Vassar College and Georgetown University School of Medicine.

She is an instructor for Breast Ultrasound Education for the Americf College of Surgeons, an investigator for the ACOSOG research cooperative group, and is a member of the Board of Directors for the American Society of Breast Surgeons.

Breast self-exam, screening methods for early detection of breast cancer, review of breast cancer risk factors, and breast cancer prevention will be discussed. The lecture is meant to be interactive, with an opportunity for audience questions and discussion.

Helping Women and Men to Work Together When One or Both Have Been Diagnosed with Cancer Presenter: Courtney Davis, LCSW Courtney Davis, LCSW is a clinical social worker at the City of Hope, a NCI Designated Comprehensive Cancer Center, in Duarte, California. Ms. Davis leads the innovative genderstrengths based partners’ clinic in the Womens’ Center Breast Cancer Clinic. She is a highly experienced educator and clinician with expertise in gender-based approaches.

Data demonstrates that women and men cope differently with stress and illness. Data also shows that there are gender-based inclinations that can actively support the ability of women and men to work as a team to strengthen relationships and couple resiliency. This workshop will share these interventions.

8. T en Things You Should Do Before Undergoing Breast Cancer Surgery – Innovative Solutions for Improving Breast Cancer Outcomes Presenter: Dennis R. Holmes, M.D., F.A.C.S. Dr. Holmes is the Chief Breast Surgeon and Medical Director of the Los Angeles Cancer for Women’s Health, a multi-specialty center dedicated to improving health outcomes in women. He is also a clinical researcher focused on reducing the side effects and treatment barriers to breast cancer surgery and radiotherapy.

The purpose of this presentation is to share with the lay public ten high-priority things that women should do after a diagnosis of breast cancer to improve the chance of successful treatment.

9. How Does My Cancer Diagnosis Affect My Family?

Genetics, Law, and Family History Presenters: Stephanie Morton, Genetic Counselor, M.S. and Anya Prince, Esq. Stephanie Morton is a certified genetic counselor at Kaiser Permanente. She provides risk assessment and counseling regarding family histories of genetic conditions, including hereditary cancer.

Anya Prince is an attorney at the Cancer Legal Resource Center.

In this role she specializes in discrimination based upon family history and genetics.

This two-part presentation will first cover cancer genetics and what a family history of cancer might mean for an individual’s future risk.

The second half will cover the laws that protect individuals from genetic discrimination, including protections based on family history of a disease.

Huntington Memorial Hospital:

120 YEARS STRONG! Whether providing care for a minor cut or bruise, or performing the most intricate of neurosurgeries, the doctors and nurses of Huntington Hospital have been healing the sick for the last 120 years. It was in February 1892, that a group of Pasadena citizens realized the need for a community hospital was imperative. As electric lights sprung up in restaurants and households and the Wright brothers began gliding through the skies of Kitty Hawk, Pasadenans no longer could be expected to take the jostling train ride to Los Angeles for even the most basic medical care.

he first funds for the hospital were raised by selling five dollar annual memberships to local citizens who promised that their money would also cover costs for those who could not afford to pay. Seven years later, the Pasadena Hospital opened its doors in a rented space in an office building at the intersection of Raymond and Green. Neighbors donated canned fruits, oranges and even bedding and linen. Three hundred and twenty nine patients were served in the first year alone.

What You Should Know About Women and Parkinson’s Presenter: Jerome Lisk, MD Dr. Jerome Lisk is board certified neurologist, fellowship-trained in movement disorders, including Parkinson’s disease, essential tremor and cervical dystonia among others. You’re in a meeting, trying your best to focus on the discussion at hand when it happens – that surge of heat that begins at the lapels of your brand-new blazer and works its way up to the roots of your perfectly high-lighted hair.

ANOTHER HOT FLASH. Many of us have been there, and those who haven’t will be there soon enough. The heat and accompanying rapid heartbeat typically last just a minute or so, but it feels like forever. There’s no getting around it – menopause is a natural part of aging with symptoms that can be disruptive for today’s woman.

“A hot flash can ruin your day if you’re in front of 60 men trying to pitch an idea and your entire blouse goes wet. That’s tough,” said Steven A. Rabin, M.D., a gynecologist on staff at Providence Saint Joseph Medical Center in Burbank. “The first thing a woman should do as she approaches menopause is have a very frank discussion with her doctor and see what treatment is appropriate.”

Menopause typically begins between 45 and 55, though earlier or later is still “normal.”

Symptoms vary from woman to woman; some experience mild annoyances, some more severe 34

disruptions. And they may last five or more years.

The first sign of menopause for most women is a change in their periods. They can become more or less frequent, lighter or heavier and longer lasting. And then the fun begins.

Common symptoms of menopause include: • Heart pounding or racing • Hot flashes • Skin flushing • Night sweats • Trouble sleeping Other symptoms: • Decreased interest in sex • Forgetfulness • Headaches • Mood swings including irritability, depression • Urine leakage • Vaginal dryness and painful sexual intercourse • Vaginal infections • Joint aches and pains • Irregular heartbeat Symptoms are caused by the changing hormone levels in a woman’s body. The ovaries make estrogen and progesterone and some of the body’s testosterone.

hormone levels dive and not only make life tough for us, but no picnic for the people we love. The mood swings, depression and other symptoms that temporarily alter personality were viewed by men in past generations as hysteria, but we know today that the symptoms have a scientific cause. In fact, the word “hysterical” comes from the Latin “hystera,” which means uterus and shows how women exhibiting emotion, depression or other natural states were, perhaps, a little bit crazy.

The first thing women should realize is that you’re not your mother or grandmother who “went through the change” and suffered silently. Dr. Rabin urges women entering menopause to talk opening and honestly with their physicians about their symptoms, whether they’re candidates for hormone therapy or other intervention and how best to manage their changing healthcare needs.

Women who have been there suggest a number of tips, including these: • Limit Caffeine, alcohol and spicy foods.

• Add food with soy to your diet.

Soy contains phytoestrogens • Get plenty of calcium and vitamin D • Do Kegel exercises daily to strengthen the vaginal and pelvic muscles • Try yoga, tai chi or medication • Dress lightly or in layers.

The good news is that menopause doesn’t last forever. Open discussion with your doctor, therapy if you’re a good candidate and healthy eating and exercise are the best medicine.

Floriculture Don Antonio Lugo High School Floral Design The beautiful floral centerpieces at the Women’s Health Conference were designed and constructed by the Floriculture students, under the instruction of Christine Dominguez, at Don Antonio Lugo High School. Students enrolled in Basic and Advanced Floral courses practice their skills through projectbased curriculum that takes their work out of the classroom and into the community. Don Lugo students regularly produce floral designs for events both on campuses in the Chino Valley Unified School District, and for civic functions in the surrounding areas; they are called upon by community groups to personalize their events with magnificent, well-crafted, floral arrangements. These opportunities enhance student learning and enthusiasm by providing students with “real life” career situations and the immediate feedback from clients and receiving public. Mrs. Dominguez has taught floral design, at Don Lugo High School, since 1996 in a program that has grown to include award winning floats in the Chino Christmas parades, themed designs for the Tournament of Roses committees, and student-led workshops.

Don Antonio Lugo High School is located in Chino, a part of the Chino Valley Unified School District, San Bernardino County, California. Don Lugo High School offers a diverse educational experience for both academic/collegian and vocational career paths, including preparation in engineering, culinary arts, agriculture, and medical fields.
